The present study examined interspecies, intersexual, and age-related changes in size of the vomeronasal neuroepithelium (VNNE) of two species of greater bushbabies (genus Otolemur, Infraorder Lorisiformes, Suborder Strepsirrhini). Tissue blocks containing the vomeronasal organs of nine O. crassicaudatus (8 adults, 1 neonate) and ten O. garnettii (9 adults, 1 neonate) were studied by means of serial paraffin sectioning and computer-based reconstruction of VNNE volume. In addition, the immunoreactivity of the VNNE to two neuronal markers, neuron-specific beta tubulin (BT) and olfactory marker protein (OMP) was compared between species, sexes, and ages. Results indicated that a clear VNNE is present at birth in both species, and OMP immunoreactivity was verified in O. garnettii at birth. Male and female adults of both species showed OMP-immunoreactive and BT-immunoreactive neurons in the VNNE. Immunohistochemical findings indicated that all males and the youngest females had the thickest VNNE, especially at the marginal junctions with the receptor-free epithelium. Results of a 2-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA, species x sex) revealed no significant differences in VNNE length or volume between species, but O. crassicaudatus had significantly (p < 0.05) greater palatal length. Significant (p < 0.05) differences also were found between sexes in VNNE volume, but no significant differences in palatal length or VNNE length. The distribution of VNNE volume against age indicated that the sex differences were more pronounced in O. crassicaudatus than O. garnettii. For both species and sexes, distribution of VNNE volume against age suggested an age-related reduction in volume. These findings demonstrate postnatal plasticity in VNNE size in Otolemur that is reminiscent of that found for olfactory structures in some rodents. Bushbabies or other strepsirrhine primates may offer an opportunity for further understanding of behavioral correlates of VNNE postnatal plasticity, which may represent primitive functional characteristics of the order Primates.  相似文献

The septal organ of Masera (SO) is a small, isolated patch of olfactory epithelium, located in the ventral part of the nasal septum. We investigated in this systematic study the postnatal development of the SO in histological sections of rats at various ages from the day of birth (P1) to P666. The SO-area increases to a maximum at P66-P105, just as the animals reach sexual maturity, and decreases thereafter, significantly however only in males, indicating a limited neurogenetic capacity for regeneration. In contrast, the main olfactory epithelium area continues to expand beyond P300. The modified respiratory epithelium ('zwischen epithelium') separating the SO and the main olfactory epithelium contains a few olfactory neurons up to age P66. Its length increases postnatally so that the SO becomes more ventral to the OE. Although the position of the SO relative to other anatomical landmarks changes with development it is consistently located just posterior to the opening of the nasopalatine duct (NPAL). Thus, a possible function of the SO is in sensing chemicals in fluids entering the mouth by licking and then delivered to the nasal cavity via the NPAL; therefore the SO may be involved in social/sexual behavior as is the vomeronasal organ (VNO). We suggest that the SO is a separate accessory olfactory organ with properties somewhat different from both OE and VNO and may exist only in species where the NPAL does not open into the VNO.  相似文献

The morphological development of the accessory olfactory bulb of the fetal pig was studied by classical and histo-chemical methods, and the vomeronasal organ and nasal septum were studied histochemically. Specimens were obtained from an abattoir and their ages estimated from their crown-to-rump length. The accessory olfactory bulb was structurally mature in fetuses of crown-to-rump length 21-23 cm, by which time the lectin Lycopersicum esculentum agglutinin stained the same structures as in adults (in particular, the entire sensory epithelium of the vomeronasal organ, the vomeronasal nerves, and the nervous and glomerular layers of the accessory olfactory bulb). These results suggest that the vomeronasal system of the pig may, like that of vertebrates such as snakes, be functional at birth.  相似文献

Chiropteran vomeronasal complex and the interfamilial relationships of bats   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Within the extant orders of living mammals, the distribution of the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and associated structures is very stable, being universally present in the vast majority or universally absent in cetaceans and sirenians. Chiroptera is the most noteworthy exception, with variation in the absence or presence of the vomeronasal complex occurring even at the species level in some instances. The VNO and/or its component structures, such as the accessory olfactory bulb, were studied in serially sectioned snouts and brains from 114 genera and 292 species representing all extant chiropteran families except Myzopodidae and Antrozoidae. Taxa were scored for the following characters: (1) degree of formation of the vomeronasal epithelial tube, (2) shape of the vomeronasal cartilage, (3) occurrence of the nasopalatine duct, and (4) occurrence of the accessory olfactory bulb. To reconstruct the evolutionary history of the bat vomeronasal complex, the distributions of these four characters were mapped, using the computer program MacClade, onto chiropteran phylogenies in the literature derived from other data sets. In all phylogenies, these four characters exhibit a high degree of homoplasy, only part of which is accounted for by several polymorphic taxa. However, perhaps the most remarkable result is that in the most parsimonious solutions the absence of the vomeronasal epithelial tube and accessory olfactory bulb is identified as primitive for Chiroptera, with both structures reevolving numerous times: such a scenario would be unique to bats among mammals. An alternative, though less parsimonious interpretation, which does not require reevolution of this very complex system, is that a well-developed vomeronasal epithelial tube is primitive for Chiroptera, as in nearly all other orders of mammals, but has been reduced or lost in the majority of families. Explication of the peculiar evolutionary history of the vomeronasal system in bats awaits studies on the adult morphology in the more than 630 species not yet examined and, in particular, on ontogeny, which to date is known for only a handful of taxa.A preliminary account of this research was presented at the Tenth International Bat Research Conference and Twenty-Fifth North American Bat Research Symposium held at Boston University, Massachusetts, on 6–11 August 1995.  相似文献

Two explanations for species differences in neonatal brain size in eutherian mammals relate the size of the brain at birth to maternal metabolic rate. Martin (1981, 1983) argued that maternal basal metabolic rate puts an upper bound on the mother's ability to supply energy to the fetus, thereby limiting neonatal brain size. Hofman (1983) proposed that gestation length in mammals is constrained by maternal metabolic rate, implying an indirect constraint on neonatal brain size. Since individuals of precocial species have much larger neonatal brain sizes and are gestated longer for a given maternal body size than individuals of altricial species, Martin's and Hofman's ideas also require that mothers of precocial offspring have higher metabolic rates for their body sizes than mothers of altricial offspring. Data on 116 mammal species from 13 orders show that neither neonatal brain size nor gestation length is correlated with maternal metabolic rate when maternal body-size effects are removed. For a given maternal size, there is no difference in metabolic rates between precocial and altricial species, despite a two-fold difference between them in average neonatal brain size. However, neonatal brain size is strongly correlated with gestation length and litter size, independently of maternal size and metabolic rate. Analyses conducted within orders replicated the findings for gestation length and suggested that neonatal brain size may be at best only weakly related to metabolic rate. Differences in neonatal brain size appear to have evolved primarily with species differences in gestation length and litter size but not with differences in metabolic rate; large-brained offspring are typically produced from litters of one that have been gestated for a long time relative to maternal size. We conclude that species differences in relative neonatal brain size reflect different life-history tactics rather than constraints imposed by metabolic rate.  相似文献

Developmental studies examining the changes in oxidative metabolic activity are useful for understanding how and if the vomeronasal and olfactory systems respond to stimulation during embryogenesis. Garter snakes are good candidates for examining the potential functionality of the vomeronasal system in utero. In adult garter snakes, the vomeronasal system mediates many behaviors. Neonatal garter snakes exhibit these same behaviors, and the vomeronasal system has been shown to mediate feeding behavior in neonates. Using cytochrome oxidase histochemistry, we examined changes in the oxidative metabolic activity of main and accessory olfactory bulbs of embryonic and neonatal garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis and T. s. parietalis). Cytochrome oxidase staining is greater in the accessory olfactory bulb than in the main olfactory bulb of embryonic garter snakes. However, neonates show no differences in the staining of the accessory and main olfactory bulbs, suggesting a change in the stimulation of the main olfactory bulb after birth. This is the first report of cytochrome oxidase histochemistry in reptiles and in the vomeronasal system of embryonic vertebrates. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In mammals, the detection of pheromones is mediated by the vomeronasal system. We have employed gene targeting to visualize the pattern of projections of axons from vomeronasal sensory neurons in the accessory olfactory bulb. Neurons expressing a specific receptor project to multiple glomeruli that reside within spatially restricted domains. The formation of this sensory map in the accessory olfactory bulb and the survival of vomeronasal organ sensory neurons require the expression of pheromone receptors. In addition, we observe individual glomeruli in the accessory olfactory bulb that receive input from more than one type of sensory neuron. These observations indicate that the organization of the vomeronasal sensory afferents is dramatically different from that of the main olfactory system, and these differences have important implications for the logic of olfactory coding in the vomeronasal organ.  相似文献

Most vertebrates have two olfactory organs, the olfactory epithelium (OE) and the vomeronasal organ. African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, which spends their entire life in water, have three types of olfactory sensory epithelia: the OE, the middle chamber epithelium (MCE) and the vomeronasal epithelium (VNE). The axons from these epithelia project to the dorsal part of the main olfactory bulb (d-MOB), the ventral part of the MOB (v-MOB) and the accessory olfactory bulb, respectively. In the MCE, which is thought to function in water, two types of receptor neurons (RNs) are intermingled and express one of two types of G-proteins, Golf and Go, respectively. However, axonal projections from these RNs to the v-MOB are not fully understood. In this study, we examined the expression of G-proteins by immunohistochemistry to reveal the projection pattern of olfactory RNs of Xenopus laevis, especially those in the MCE. The somata of Golf- and Go-positive RNs were separately situated in the upper and lower layers of the MCE. The former were equipped with cilia and the latter with microvilli on their apical surface. These RNs are suggested to project to the rostromedial and the caudolateral regions of the v-MOB, respectively. Such segregation patterns observed in the MCE and v-MOB are also present in the OE and olfactory bulbs of most bony fish. Thus, Xenopus laevis is a very interesting model to understand the evolution of vertebrate olfactory systems because they have a primitive, fish-type olfactory system in addition to the mammalian-type olfactory system.  相似文献

Variation in neonatal maturity among mammals is often explained by variation in gestation length, but species may also differ in developmental rate, a quantity that is difficult to measure because the conventional formalism makes two important and potentially unrealistic assumptions: (1) ontogeny of form can be described by a single line, and (2) species have the same ontogeny of form. We examine two species, one precocial (Sigmodon fulviventer), the other altricial (Mus musculus domesticus), and find that neither assumption is met. Therefore, we introduce an alternative metric, the rate of shape differentiation away from the average neonate. We find that S. fulviventer has a lower developmental rate than M. m. domesticus; consequently, while more mature at birth, S. fulviventer loses ground to M. m. domesticus over time. Surprisingly, despite differences in gestation length and developmental rate, these species reach developmental and life-history milestones at nearly identical degrees of skull shape maturity.  相似文献

The vomeronasal organ is a poorly understood accessory olfactory organ, present in many tetrapods. In mammals, amphibians and lepidosaurian reptiles, it is an encapsulated structure with a central, fluid-filled lumen. The morphology of the lubricatory system of the vomeronasal organ (the source of this fluid) varies among classes, being either intrinsic (mammalian and caecilian amphibian vomeronasal glands) or extrinsic (anuran and urodele nasal glands). In the few squamate reptiles thus far examined, there are no submucosal vomeronasal glands. In this study, we examined the vomeronasal organs of several species of Australian squamates using histological, histochemical and ultrastructural techniques, with the goal of determining the morphology of the lubricatory system in the vomeronasal organ. Histochemically, the fluid within the vomeronasal organ of all squamates is mucoserous, though it is uncertain whether mucous and serous constituents constitute separate components. The vomeronasal organ produces few secretory granules intrinsically, implying an extrinsic source for the luminal fluid. Of three possible candidates, the Harderian gland is the most likely extrinsic source of this secretion.  相似文献

In mammals, social and sexual behaviours are largely mediated by the vomeronasal system (VNS). The accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) is the first synaptic locus of the VNS and ranges from very large in Caviomorph rodents, small in carnivores and ungulates, to its complete absence in apes, elephants, most bats and aquatic species. Two pathways have been described in the VNS of mammals. In mice, vomeronasal neurons expressing Gαi2 protein project to the rostral portion of the AOB and respond mostly to small volatile molecules, whereas neurons expressing Gαo project to the caudal AOB and respond mostly to large non-volatile molecules. However, the Gαo-expressing pathway is absent in several species (horses, dogs, musk shrews, goats and marmosets) but no hypotheses have been proposed to date to explain the loss of that pathway. We noted that the species that lost the Gαo pathway belong to Laurasiatheria and Primates lineages, both clades with ubiquitous sexual dimorphisms across species. To assess whether similar events of Gαo pathway loss could have occurred convergently in dimorphic species we studied G-protein expression in the AOB of two species that independently evolved sexually dimorphic traits: the California ground squirrel Spermophilus beecheyi (Rodentia; Sciurognathi) and the cape hyrax Procavia capensis (Afrotheria; Hyracoidea). We found that both species show uniform expression of Gαi2-protein throughout AOB glomeruli, while Gαo expression is restricted to main olfactory glomeruli only. Our results suggest that the degeneration of the Gαo-expressing vomeronasal pathway has occurred independently at least four times in Eutheria, possibly related to the emergence of sexual dimorphisms and the ability of detecting the gender of conspecifics at distance.  相似文献

Using the flexible Chapman-Richards model for describing the growth curves from birth to adulthood of 69 species of eutherian mammals, we demonstrate that growth form differs among eutherian mammals. Thereby the commonly used Gompertz model can no longer be considered as the general model for describing mammalian growth. Precocial mammals have their peak growth rate earlier in the growth process than altricial mammals. However, the position on the altricial-precocial continuum accounts for most growth-form differences only between mammalian lineages. Within mammalian genera differences in growth form are not related to precocity at birth. This indicates that growth form may have been associated with precocity at birth early in mammalian evolution, when broad patterns of body development radiated. We discuss four non-exclusive interpretations to account for the role of precocity at birth on the observed variation in growth form among mammals. Precocial and altricial mammals could differ according to (i) the distribution of energy output by the mother, (ii) the ability of the young to assimilate the milk yield, (iii) the allocation of energy by the young between competing functions and (iv) the position of birth between conception and attainment of physical maturity.  相似文献

This article studies the morphological remodeling of olfactory organs in the fire salamander (Salamandridae, Caudata), from the larval stages of ontogeny to the adult and throughout the course of the annual cycle. The fire salamander exhibits adaptations to the aquatic environment during premetamorphic life and terrestrial adaptations after metamorphosis. During adulthood, the annual activity of this species is divided into three seasonal periods: a breeding period, a nonbreeding period, and hibernation. We observed significant differences in morphology of olfactory organs between developmental stages as well as between each period within the annual cycle. For the first time in caudates, we examined the morphology of olfactory organs during the winter period (wintering larvae, hibernating adults). The results show that the remodeling of olfactory organs during the life of the fire salamander occurs both on macro- and micromorphological levels. Macromorphological ontogenetic variability includes the shape of the main olfactory chamber (MOC) and the distribution of olfactory epithelium (OE) in the MOC and in the vomeronasal organ (VNO). In larvae, the vomeronasal epithelium (VNE) is in a separate cavity, while in the post-metamorphic stages of ontogeny, the VNE occurs in the diverticulum of the MOC. In adult fire salamanders, both olfactory organs are most developed during the breeding season and reduced during hibernation. The VNE and OE in the MOC are also reduced during hibernation. Micro-morphological changes included different types/subtypes of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) in the OE in particular stages of ontogeny and periods within the annual cycle, for example, ciliate ORNs are present in the VNE only in the larval stages and giant ORNs occur only in nonbreeding adults. Also, there was a variable set of types of olfactory supporting cells in the VNO of the fire salamander during pre- and postmetamorphic life stages.  相似文献

The accessory olfactory system contributes to the perception of chemical stimuli in the environment. This review summarizes the structure of the accessory olfactory system, the stimuli that activate it, and the responses elicited in the receptor cells and in the brain. The accessory olfactory system consists of a sensory organ, the vomeronasal organ, and its central projection areas: the accessory olfactory bulb, which is connected to the amygdala and hypothalamus, and also to the cortex. In the vomeronasal organ, several receptors—in contrast to the main olfactory receptors—are sensitive to volatile or nonvolatile molecules. In a similar manner to the main olfactory epithelium, the vomeronasal organ is sensitive to common odorants and pheromones. Each accessory olfactory bulb receives input from the ipsilateral vomeronasal organ, but its activity is modulated by centrifugal projections arising from other brain areas. The processing of vomeronasal stimuli in the amygdala involves contributions from the main olfactory system, and results in long-lasting responses that may be related to the activation of the hypothalamic–hypophyseal axis over a prolonged timeframe. Different brain areas receive inputs from both the main and the accessory olfactory systems, possibly merging the stimulation of the two sensory organs to originate a more complex and integrated chemosensory perception.  相似文献

In vertebrate olfactory epithelium (OE), neurogenesis proceeds continuously, suggesting that endogenous signals support survival and proliferation of stem and progenitor cells. We used a genetic approach to test the hypothesis that Fgf8 plays such a role in developing OE. In young embryos, Fgf8 RNA is expressed in the rim of the invaginating nasal pit (NP), in a small domain of cells that overlaps partially with that of putative OE neural stem cells later in gestation. In mutant mice in which the Fgf8 gene is inactivated in anterior neural structures, FGF-mediated signaling is strongly downregulated in both OE proper and underlying mesenchyme by day 10 of gestation. Mutants survive gestation but die at birth, lacking OE, vomeronasal organ (VNO), nasal cavity, forebrain, lower jaw, eyelids and pinnae. Analysis of mutants indicates that although initial NP formation is grossly normal, cells in the Fgf8-expressing domain undergo high levels of apoptosis, resulting in cessation of nasal cavity invagination and loss of virtually all OE neuronal cell types. These findings demonstrate that Fgf8 is crucial for proper development of the OE, nasal cavity and VNO, as well as maintenance of OE neurogenesis during prenatal development. The data suggest a model in which Fgf8 expression defines an anterior morphogenetic center, which is required not only for the sustenance and continued production of primary olfactory (OE and VNO) neural stem and progenitor cells, but also for proper morphogenesis of the entire nasal cavity.  相似文献

The vomeronasal system (VNS) serves crucial functions for detecting olfactory clues often related to social and sexual behaviour. Intriguingly, two of the main components of the VNS, the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and the accessory olfactory bulb, are regressed in aquatic mammals, several bats and primates, likely due to adaptations to different ecological niches. To detect genomic changes that are associated with the convergent reduction of the VNS, we performed the first systematic screen for convergently inactivated protein‐coding genes associated with convergent VNS reduction, considering 106 mammalian genomes. Extending previous studies, our results support that Trpc2, a cation channel that is important for calcium signalling in the VNO, is a predictive molecular marker for the presence of a VNS. Our screen also detected the convergent inactivation of the calcium‐binding protein S100z, the aldehyde oxidase Aox2 that is involved in odorant degradation, and the uncharacterized Mslnl gene that is expressed in the VNO and olfactory epithelium. Furthermore, we found that Trpc2 and S100z or Aox2 are also inactivated in otters and Phocid seals for which no morphological data about the VNS are available yet. This predicts a VNS reduction in these semi‐aquatic mammals. By examining the genomes of 115 species in total, our study provides a detailed picture of how the convergent reduction of the VNS coincides with gene inactivation in placental mammals. These inactivated genes provide experimental targets for studying the evolution and biological significance of the olfactory system under different environmental conditions.  相似文献

Allometric methods can be used to test quantitative theories of the relationship between brain size and body size across species, and to search for ecological, behavioural, life history, and ontogenetic correlates of brain size. Brain size scales with an allometric exponent of around 0.75 against body size across mammals, but is closer to 0.56 for birds and for reptiles. The slope of the allometric line often varies depending upon the taxonomic level of analysis. However, this phenomenon, at least in mammals, may be a statistical artifact. Brain size for a given body size (relative brain size) varies among orders in birds and mammals, and some dietary associations with relative brain size have been found in particular taxa. Developmental status at birth is the most consistent correlate of relative brain size: precocial neonates have larger brains for a given maternal size than altricial neonates in both birds and mammals. Altricial neonates, however, have more brain growth following birth, and in birds also have larger relative adult brain sizes. Energetic explanations for differences in neonatal brain growth, although attractive on theoretical grounds, have largely failed to stand up to empirical tests.  相似文献

The mechanisms that underlie axonal pathfinding of vomeronasal neurons from the vomeronasal organ (VNO) in the periphery to select glomeruli in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) are not well understood. Neuropilin-2, a receptor for secreted semaphorins, is expressed in V1R- and V3R-expressing, but not V2R-expressing, postnatal vomeronasal neurons. Analysis of the vomeronasal nerve in neuropilin-2 (npn-2) mutant mice reveals pathfinding defects at multiple choice points. Vomeronasal sensory axons are severely defasciculated and a subset innervates the main olfactory bulb (MOB). While most axons of V1R-expressing neurons reach the AOB and converge into distinct glomeruli in stereotypic locations, they are no longer restricted to their normal anterior AOB target zone. Thus, Npn-2 and candidate pheromone receptors play distinct and complementary roles in promoting the wiring and patterning of sensory neurons in the accessory olfactory system.  相似文献
