Dynamics of photoassimilated carbon in douglas fir seedlings   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
Webb WL 《Plant physiology》1975,56(4):455-459
The relations between CO2 uptake, translocation, and carbon accumulation in several vegetative components of Douglas fir seedlings (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) have been quantified using 14CO2. Seedlings were exposed to a constant specific radioactivity of 14CO2 and a repeating daily pattern of temperature and light for 4 consecutive days. Results of 14C analysis, which indicated a transitory pattern of photoassimilated carbon movement, were extrapolated to a “steady rate” using a compartment analysis. Accumulation rates of photoassimilated carbon, relative to tissue carbon, were new needles, 0.94%/day, old needles, 1.14%/day, new shoots 0.38%/day, stem, 0.16%/day, and roots, 0.50%/day. Therefore, the source of carbon, the needles, is also the strongest sink.  相似文献

It was hypothesized that high CO2 availability would increase monoterpene emission to the atmosphere. This hypothesis was based on resource allocation theory which predicts increased production of plant secondary compounds when carbon is in excess of that required for growth. Monoterpene emission rates were measured from needles of (a) Ponderosa pine grown at different CO2 concentrations and soil nitrogen levels, and (b) Douglas fir grown at different CO2 concentrations. Ponderosa pine grown at 700 μmol mol–1 CO2 exhibited increased photosynthetic rates and needle starch to nitrogen (N) ratios when compared to trees grown at 350 μmol mol–1 CO2. Nitrogen availability had no consistent effect on photosynthesis. Douglas fir grown at 550 μmol mol–1 CO2 exhibited increased photosynthetic rates as compared to growth at 350 μmol mol–1 CO2 in old, but not young needles, and there was no influence on the starch/N ratio. In neither species was there a significant effect of elevated growth CO2 on needle monoterpene concentration or emission rate. The influence of climate warming and leaf area index (LAI) on monoterpene emission were also investigated. Douglas fir grown at elevated CO2 plus a 4 °C increase in growth temperature exhibited no change in needle monoterpene concentration, despite a predicted 50% increase in emission rate. At elevated CO2 concentration the LAI increased in Ponderosa pine, but not Douglas fir. The combination of increased LAI and climate warming are predicted to cause an 80% increase in monoterpene emissions from Ponderosa pine forests and a 50% increase in emissions from Douglas fir forests. This study demonstrates that although growth at elevated CO2 may not affect the rate of monoterpene emission per unit biomass, the effect of elevated CO2 on LAI, and the effect of climate warming on monoterpene biosynthesis and volatilization, could increase canopy monoterpene emission rate.  相似文献

Freshwater macroalgae represent a largely overlooked group of phototrophic organisms that could play an important role within an industrial ecology context in both utilising waste nutrients and water and supplying biomass for animal feeds and renewable chemicals and fuels. This study used water from the intensive aquaculture of freshwater fish (Barramundi) to examine how the biomass production rate and protein content of the freshwater macroalga Oedogonium responds to increasing the flux of nutrients and carbon, by either increasing water exchange rates or through the addition of supplementary nitrogen and CO2. Biomass production rates were highest at low flow rates (0.1–1 vol.day−1) using raw pond water. The addition of CO2 to cultures increased biomass production rates by between 2 and 25% with this effect strongest at low water exchange rates. Paradoxically, the addition of nitrogen to cultures decreased productivity, especially at low water exchange rates. The optimal culture of Oedogonium occurred at flow rates of between 0.5–1 vol.day−1, where uptake rates peaked at 1.09 g.m−2.day−1 for nitrogen and 0.13 g.m−2.day−1 for phosphorous. At these flow rates Oedogonium biomass had uptake efficiencies of 75.2% for nitrogen and 22.1% for phosphorous. In this study a nitrogen flux of 1.45 g.m−2.day−1 and a phosphorous flux of 0.6 g.m−2.day−1 was the minimum required to maintain the growth of Oedogonium at 16–17 g DW.m−2.day−1 and a crude protein content of 25%. A simple model of minimum inputs shows that for every gram of dry weight biomass production (g DW.m−2.day−1), Oedogonium requires 0.09 g.m−2.day−1 of nitrogen and 0.04 g.m−2.day−1 of phosphorous to maintain growth without nutrient limitation whilst simultaneously maintaining a high-nutrient uptake rate and efficiency. As such the integrated culture of freshwater macroalgae with aquaculture for the purposes of nutrient recovery is a feasible solution for the bioremediation of wastewater and the supply of a protein resource.  相似文献

The effects of CO2-limited photosynthesis on 15NO3 uptake and reduction by maize (Zea mays, DeKalb XL-45) seedlings were examined in relation to concurrent effects of CO2 stress on carbohydrate levels and in vitro nitrate reductase activities. During a 10-hour period in CO2-depleted air (30 microliters of CO2/ per liter), cumulative 15NO3 uptake and reduction were restricted 22 and 82%, respectively, relative to control seedlings exposed to ambient air containing 450 microliters of CO2 per liter. The comparable values for roots of decapitated maize seedlings, the shoots of which had previously been subjected to CO2 stress, were 30 and 42%. The results demonstrate that reduction of entering nitrate by roots as well as shoots was regulated by concurrent photosynthesis. Although in vitro nitrate reductase activity of both tissues declined by 60% during a 10-hour period of CO2 stress, the remaining activity was greatly in excess of that required to catalyze the measured rate of 15NO3 reduction. Root respiration and soluble carbohydrate levels in root tissue were also decreased by CO2 stress. Collectively, the results indicate that nitrate uptake and reduction were regulated by the supply of energy and carbon skeletons required to support these processes, rather than by the potential enzymatic capacity to catalyze nitrate reduction, as measured by in vitro nitrate reductase activity.  相似文献

Summary Seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from Russia (59°58N) and Poland (53°34N) were grown for 4 months in controlled environment chambers, simulating the photoperiod conditions of 50° and 60° N. The Russian population grown at 50° N showed earlier height growth cessation than the Polish population. Photoperiodic conditions of 60° N increased proportional allocation of dry mass to shoots and lowered allocation to roots in the Russian population, which also had greater allocation to roots than the Polish population in both treatments. Total non-structural carbohydrate concentrations in roots and secondary needles of both populations were significantly higher at the end of the 4 month growing season at 50° compared to 60° N. Net photosynthesis rates were similar for both provenances and both treatments. The rate of transpiration was higher and water-use efficiency lower for plants grown in long-day conditions of 60° N. The mean respiration rate of roots ranged between 30 and 36 nmol CO2 · g-1 dry mass · s-1 and was 2–4 times higher than values observed for needles. Root respiration rates were greater in the Polish than the Russian population. Despite this, the greater allocation to root dry mass of the Russian population resulted in greater root respiratory cost as a proportion of daily carbon gain. Overall, root respiration accounted for between 18 to 34% of the total daily net carbon assimilation of these populations. Root and total respiration as a proportion of net daily carbon assimilation were greater at 50° than 60°N. Mean net integrated CO2 gains were 2.2–2.5 mmol CO2 · day-1 for seedlings from Russia compared to 3 mmol CO2 · day-1 for Poland.  相似文献

Needles from phosphorus deficient seedlings of Pinus radiata D. Don grown for 8 weeks at either 330 or 660 microliters CO2 per liter displayed chlorophyll a fluorescence induction kinetics characteristic of structural changes within the thylakoid chloroplast membrane, i.e. constant yield fluorescence (FO) was increased and induced fluorescence ([FP-FI]/FO) was reduced. The effect was greatest in the undroughted plants grown at 660 μl CO2 L−1. By week 22 at 330 μl CO2 L−1 acclimation to P deficiency had occurred as shown by the similarity in the fluorescence characteristics and maximum rates of photosynthesis of the needles from the two P treatments. However, acclimation did not occur in the plants grown at 660 μl CO2 L−1. The light saturated rate of photosynthesis of needles with adequate P was higher at 660 μl CO2 L−1 than at 330 μl CO2 L−1, whereas photosynthesis of P deficient plants showed no increase when grown at the higher CO2 concentration. The average growth increase due to CO2 enrichment was 14% in P deficient plants and 32% when P was adequate. In drought stressed plants grown at 330 μl CO2 L−1, there was a reduction in the maximal rate of quenching of fluorescence (RQ) after the major peak. Constant yield fluorescence was unaffected but induced fluorescence was lower. These results indicate that electron flow subsequent to photosystem II was affected by drought stress. At 660 μl CO2 L−1 this response was eliminated showing that CO2 enrichment improved the ability of the seedlings to acclimate to drought stress. The average growth increase with CO2 enrichment was 37% in drought stressed plants and 19% in unstressed plants.  相似文献

A series of sites were established on Hawaiian volcanic deposits ranging from about 18 to 300 years old. Three sites occurred in areas that supported tropical rain forests; the remaining sites were in areas that supported little or no plant growth. Sites >26 years old consumed atmospheric CO and hydrogen at rates ranging from about 0.2 to 5 mg of CO m−2 day−1 and 0.1 to 4 mg of H2 m−2 day−1, respectively. Respiration, measured as CO2 production, for a subset of the sites ranged from about 40 to >1,400 mg of CO2 m−2 day−1. CO and H2 accounted for about 13 to 25% of reducing equivalent flow for all but a forested site, where neither substrate appeared significant. Based on responses to chloroform fumigation, hydrogen utilization appeared largely due to microbial uptake. In contrast to results for CO and hydrogen, methane uptake occurred consistently only at the forest site. Increasing deposit age was generally accompanied by increasing concentrations of organic matter and microbial biomass, measured as phospholipid phosphate. Exoenzymatic activities (acid and alkaline phosphatases and α- and β-glucosidases) were positively correlated with deposit age in spite of considerable variability within sites. The diversity of substrates utilized in Biolog Ecoplate assays also increased with deposit age, possibly reflecting changes in microbial community complexity.  相似文献

An investigation of the terminal anaerobic processes occurring in polluted intertidal sediments indicated that terminal carbon flow was mainly mediated by sulfate-reducing organisms in sediments with high sulfate concentrations (>10 mM in the interstitial water) exposed to low loadings of nutrient (equivalent to <102 kg of N · day−1) and biochemical oxygen demand (<0.7 × 103 kg · day−1) in effluents from different pollution sources. However, in sediments exposed to high loadings of nutrient (>102 kg of N · day−1) and biochemical oxygen demand (>0.7 × 103 kg · day−1), methanogenesis was the major process in the mediation of terminal carbon flow, and sulfate concentrations were low (≤2 mM). The respiratory index [14CO2/(14CO2 + 14CH4)] for [2-14C]acetate catabolism, a measure of terminal carbon flow, was ≥0.96 for sediment with high sulfate, but in sediments with sulfate as little as 10 μM in the interstitial water, respiratory index values of ≤0.22 were obtained. In the latter sediment, methane production rates as high as 3 μmol · g−1 (dry weight) · h−1 were obtained, and there was a potential for active sulfate reduction.  相似文献

Summary Shade needles of hybrid larch (Larix decidua × leptolepis) had the same rates of photosynthesis as sun needles per dry weight and nitrogen, and a similar leaf conductance under conditions of light saturation at ambient CO2 (Amax). However, on an area basis, Amax and specific leaf weight were lower in shade than in sun needles. Stomata of sun needles limited CO2 uptake at light saturation by about 20%, but under natural conditions of light in the shade crown, shade needles operated in a range of saturating internal CO2 without stomatal limitation of CO2 uptake. In both needle types, stomata responded similarly to changes in light, but shade needles were more sensitive to changes in vapor pressure deficit than sun needles. Despite a high photosynthetic capacity, the ambient light conditions reduced the mean daily (in summer) and annual carbon gain of shade needles to less than 50% of that in sun needles. In sun needles, the transpiration per carbon gain was about 220 mol mol–1 on an annual basis. The carbon budget of branches was determined from the photosynthetic rate, the needle biomass and respiration, the latter of which was (per growth and on a carbon basis) 1.6 mol mol–1 year–1 in branch and stem wood. In shade branches carbon gains exceeded carbon costs (growth + respiration) by only a factor of 1.6 compared with 3.5 in sun branches. The carbon balance of sun branches was 5 times higher per needle biomass of a branch or 9 times higher on a branch length basis than shade branches. The shade foliage (including the shaded near-stem sun foliage) only contributed approximately 23% to the total annual carbon gain of the tree.  相似文献

Equations have been developed which quantitatively predict the theoretical time-course of photosynthetic 14C incorporation when CO2 or HCO3 serves as the sole source of exogenous inorganic carbon taken up for fixation by cells during steady state photosynthesis. Comparison between the shape of theoretical (CO2 or HCO3) and experimentally derived time-courses of 14C incorporation permits the identification of the major species of inorganic carbon which crosses the plasmalemma of photosynthetic cells and facilitates the detection of any combined contribution of CO2 and HCO3 transport to the supply of intracellular inorganic carbon. The ability to discriminate between CO2 or HCO3 uptake relies upon monitoring changes in the intracellular specific activity (by 14C fixation) which occur when the inorganic carbon, present in the suspending medium, is in a state of isotopic disequilibrium (JT Lehman 1978 J Phycol 14: 33-42). The presence of intracellular carbonic anhydrase or some other catalyst of the CO2-HCO3 interconversion reaction is required for quantitatively accurate predictions. Analysis of equations describing the rate of 14C incorporation provides two methods by which any contribution of HCO3 ions to net photosynthetic carbon uptake can be estimated.  相似文献

Bacterioplankton abundance, [3H]thymidine incorporation, 14CO2 uptake in the dark, and fractionated primary production were measured on several occasions between June and August 1982 in eutrophic Lake Norrviken, Sweden. Bacterioplankton abundance and carbon biomass ranged from 0.5 × 109 to 2.4 × 109 cells liter−1 and 7 to 47 μg of C liter−1, respectively. The average bacterial cell volume was 0.185 μm3. [3H]thymidine incorporation into cold-trichloroacetic acid-insoluble material ranged from 12 × 10−12 to 200 × 10−12 mol liter−1 h−1. Bacterial carbon production rates were estimated to be 0.2 to 7.1 μg of C liter−1 h−1. Bacterial production estimates from [3H]thymidine incorporation and 14CO2 uptake in the dark agreed when activity was high but diverged when activity was low and when blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) dominated the phytoplankton. Size fractionation indicated negligible uptake of [3H]thymidine in the >3-μm fraction during a chrysophycean bloom in early June. We found that >50% of the 3H activity was in the >3-μm fraction in late August; this phenomenon was most likely due to Microcystis spp., their associated bacteria, or both. Over 60% of the 14CO2 uptake in the dark was attributed to algae on each sampling occasion. Algal exudate was an important carbon source for planktonic bacteria. Bacterial production was roughly 50% of primary production.  相似文献

The species of inorganic carbon (CO2 or HCO3) taken up a source of substrate for photosynthetic fixation by isolated Asparagus sprengeri mesophyll cells is investigated. Discrimination between CO2 or HCO3 transport, during steady state photosynthesis, is achieved by monitoring the changes (by 14C fixation) which occur in the specific activity of the intracellular pool of inorganic carbon when the inorganic carbon present in the suspending medium is in a state of isotopic disequilibrium. Quantitative comparisons between theoretical (CO2 or HCO3 transport) and experimental time-courses of 14C incorporation, over the pH range of 5.2 to 7.5, indicate that the specific activity of extracellular CO2, rather than HCO3, is the appropriate predictor of the intracellular specific activity. It is concluded, therefore, that CO2 is the major source of exogenous inorganic carbon taken up by Asparagus cells. However, at high pH (8.5), a component of net DIC uptake may be attributable to HCO3 transport, as the incorporation of 14C during isotopic disequilibrium exceeds the maximum possible incorporation predicted on the basis of CO2 uptake alone. The contribution of HCO3 to net inorganic carbon uptake (pH 8.5) is variable, ranging from 5 to 16%, but is independent of the extracellular HCO3 concentration. The evidence for direct HCO3 transport is subject to alternative explanations and must, therefore, be regarded as equivocal. Nonlinear regression analysis of the rate of 14C incorporation as a function of time indicates the presence of a small extracellular resistance to the diffusion of CO2, which is partially alleviated by a high extracellular concentration of HCO3.  相似文献

Synechococcus leopoliensis was grown in HCO3-limited chemostats. Growth at 50% the maximum rate occurred when the inorganic carbon concentration was 10 to 15 micromolar (or 5.6 to 8.4 nanomolar CO2). The O2 to CO2 ratios during growth were as high as 192,000 to 1. At growth rates below 80% the maximum rate, essentially all the supplied inorganic carbon was converted to organic carbon, and the cells were carbon limited. Carbon-limited cells used HCO3 rather than CO2 for growth. They also exhibited a very high photosynthetic affinity for inorganic carbon in short-term experiments. Cells growing at greater than 80% maximum growth rate, in the presence of high dissolved inorganic carbon, were termed carbon sufficient. These cells had photosynthetic affinities that were about 1000-fold lower than HCO3-limited cells and also had a reduced capacity for HCO3 transport. HCO3-limited cells are reminiscent of the air-grown cells of batch culture studies while the carbon sufficient cells are reminiscent of high-CO2 grown cells. However, the low affinity cells of the present study were growing at CO2 concentrations less than air saturation. This suggests that supranormal levels of CO2 not required to induce the physiological changes usually ascribed to high CO2 cells.  相似文献

In high inorganic carbon grown (1% CO2 [volume/volume]) cells of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus PCC7942, the carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitor, ethoxyzolamide (EZ), was found to inhibit the rate of CO2 uptake and to reduce the final internal inorganic carbon (Ci) pool size reached. The relationship between CO2 fixation rate and internal Ci concentration in high Ci grown cells was little affected by EZ. This suggests that in intact cells internal CA activity was unaffected by EZ. High Ci grown cells readily took up CO2 but had little or no capacity for HCO3 uptake. These cells appear to possess a CO2 utilizing Ci pump that has a CA-like function associated with the transport step such that HCO3 is the species delivered to the cell interior. This CA-like step may be the site of inhibition by EZ. Low Ci grown cells possess both CO2 uptake and HCO3 uptake activities and EZ inhibited both activities to a similar degree, suggesting that a common step in CO2 and HCO3 uptake (such as the Ci pump) may have been affected. The inhibitor had no apparent effect on internal CO2/HCO3 equilibria (internal CA function) in low Ci grown cells.  相似文献

This research examines the relationships between El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), water level, precipitation patterns and carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange rates in the freshwater wetland ecosystems of the Florida Everglades. Data was obtained over a 5-year study period (2009–2013) from two freshwater marsh sites located in Everglades National Park that differ in hydrology. At the short-hydroperiod site (Taylor Slough; TS) and the long-hydroperiod site (Shark River Slough; SRS) fluctuations in precipitation patterns occurred with changes in ENSO phase, suggesting that extreme ENSO phases alter Everglades hydrology which is known to have a substantial influence on ecosystem carbon dynamics. Variations in both ENSO phase and annual net CO2 exchange rates co-occurred with changes in wet and dry season length and intensity. Combined with site-specific seasonality in CO2 exchanges rates, El Niño and La Niña phases magnified season intensity and CO2 exchange rates at both sites. At TS, net CO2 uptake rates were higher in the dry season, whereas SRS had greater rates of carbon sequestration during the wet season. As La Niña phases were concurrent with drought years and extended dry seasons, TS became a greater sink for CO2 on an annual basis (−11 to −110 g CO2 m−2 yr−1) compared to El Niño and neutral years (−5 to −43.5 g CO2 m−2 yr−1). SRS was a small source for CO2 annually (1.81 to 80 g CO2 m−2 yr−1) except in one exceptionally wet year that was associated with an El Niño phase (−16 g CO2 m−2 yr−1). Considering that future climate predictions suggest a higher frequency and intensity in El Niño and La Niña phases, these results indicate that changes in extreme ENSO phases will significantly alter CO2 dynamics in the Florida Everglades.  相似文献

Anaerobic or microaerophilic chemolithoautotrophic bacteria have been considered to be responsible for CO2 dark fixation in different pelagic redoxclines worldwide, but their involvement in redox processes is still not fully resolved. We investigated the impact of 17 different electron donor/acceptor combinations in water of pelagic redoxclines from the central Baltic Sea on the stimulation of bacterial CO2 dark fixation as well as on the development of chemolithoautotrophic populations. In situ, the highest CO2 dark fixation rates, ranging from 0.7 to 1.4 μmol liter−1 day−1, were measured directly below the redoxcline. In enrichment experiments, chemolithoautotrophic CO2 dark fixation was maximally stimulated by the addition of thiosulfate, reaching values of up to 9.7 μmol liter−1 CO2 day−1. Chemolithoautotrophic nitrate reduction proved to be an important process, with rates of up to 33.5 μmol liter−1 NO3 day−1. Reduction of Fe(III) or Mn(IV) was not detected; nevertheless, the presence of these potential electron acceptors influenced the development of stimulated microbial assemblages. Potential chemolithoautotrophic bacteria in the enrichment experiments were displayed on 16S ribosomal complementary DNA single-strand-conformation polymorphism fingerprints and identified by sequencing of excised bands. Sequences were closely related to chemolithoautotrophic Thiomicrospira psychrophila and Maorithyas hadalis gill symbiont (both Gammaproteobacteria) and to an uncultured nitrate-reducing Helicobacteraceae bacterium (Epsilonproteobacteria). Our data indicate that this Helicobacteraceae bacterium could be of general importance or even a key organism for autotrophic nitrate reduction in pelagic redoxclines.  相似文献

Methanol is the predominant oxygenated volatile organic compound in the troposphere, where it can significantly influence the oxidising capacity of the atmosphere. However, we do not understand which processes control oceanic concentrations, and hence, whether the oceans are a source or a sink to the atmosphere. We report the first methanol loss rates in seawater by demonstrating that 14C-labelled methanol can be used to determine microbial uptake into particulate biomass, and oxidation to 14CO2. We have found that methanol is used predominantly as a microbial energy source, but also demonstrated its use as a carbon source. We report biological methanol oxidation rates between 2.1 and 8.4 nmol l−1 day−1 in surface seawater of the northeast Atlantic. Kinetic experiments predict a Vmax of up to 29 nmol l−1 day−1, with a high affinity Km constant of 9.3 n in more productive coastal waters. We report surface concentrations of methanol in the western English channel of 97±8 n (n=4) between May and June 2010, and for the wider temperate North Atlantic waters of 70±13 n (n=6). The biological turnover time of methanol has been estimated between 7 and 33 days, although kinetic experiments suggest a 7-day turnover in more productive shelf waters. Methanol uptake rates into microbial particles significantly correlated with bacterial and phytoplankton parameters, suggesting that it could be used as a carbon source by some bacteria and possibly some mixotrophic eukaryotes. Our results provide the first methanol loss rates from seawater, which will improve the understanding of the global methanol budget.  相似文献

Nutritional and physical factors affecting the decomposition of [14C]lignocellulose prepared from Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) were examined by incubating the labeled substrate with homogenized surface wood scrapings obtained from a Douglas fir log in a Pacific Northwest stream. Incubations were conducted in distilled water, in stream water collected from four different sources, or in a defined mineral salts solution with or without supplemental N (KNO3). Decomposition rates of [14C]lignocellulose, as measured by 14CO2 evolution, were greater in each of the four filter-sterilized sources of stream water than in distilled water alone. Decomposition experiments conducted in stream water media with the addition of defined mineral salts demonstrated that [14C]cellulose decomposition was stimulated 50% by the addition of either KNO3 or KH2PO4/K2HPO4 and further enhanced (167%) by a combination of both. In contrast, [14C]lignin decomposition was stimulated (65%) only by the addition of both N and P. Decomposition of [14C]lignocellulose was greatest when supplemental KNO3 was supplied in concentrations of at least 10.0 mg of N liter−1 but not increased further by higher concentrations. The decomposition of [14C]lignocellulose increased as the incubation temperature was raised and NO3−1-N supplementation further increased these rates between three-and sevenfold over the range of temperatures examined (5 to 22°C). Accumulation of NH4+ (2 to 4 mg of N liter−1) was always observed in culture filtrates of incubations which had been supplemented with KNO3, the quantity being independent of NO3 concentrations ≥ 10 mg of N liter−1. The role of supplemental NO3 in the decomposition of [14C]lignocellulose is discussed in relation to wood decomposition and the low concentrations of N found in stream ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest.  相似文献

Interactions between the terrestrial nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) cycles shape the response of ecosystems to global change. However, the global distribution of nitrogen availability and its importance in global biogeochemistry and biogeochemical interactions with the climate system remain uncertain. Based on projections of a terrestrial biosphere model scaling ecological understanding of nitrogen–carbon cycle interactions to global scales, anthropogenic nitrogen additions since 1860 are estimated to have enriched the terrestrial biosphere by 1.3 Pg N, supporting the sequestration of 11.2 Pg C. Over the same time period, CO2 fertilization has increased terrestrial carbon storage by 134.0 Pg C, increasing the terrestrial nitrogen stock by 1.2 Pg N. In 2001–2010, terrestrial ecosystems sequestered an estimated total of 27 Tg N yr−1 (1.9 Pg C yr−1), of which 10 Tg N yr−1 (0.2 Pg C yr−1) are due to anthropogenic nitrogen deposition. Nitrogen availability already limits terrestrial carbon sequestration in the boreal and temperate zone, and will constrain future carbon sequestration in response to CO2 fertilization (regionally by up to 70% compared with an estimate without considering nitrogen–carbon interactions). This reduced terrestrial carbon uptake will probably dominate the role of the terrestrial nitrogen cycle in the climate system, as it accelerates the accumulation of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere. However, increases of N2O emissions owing to anthropogenic nitrogen and climate change (at a rate of approx. 0.5 Tg N yr−1 per 1°C degree climate warming) will add an important long-term climate forcing.  相似文献

Photosynthesis of washed cells of Synechococcus UTEX 625 grown on 5% CO2 was markedly stimulated (647 ± 50%) at pH 8.0 by the addition of low concentrations of NaCl (concentration required for half-maximal response, K½, = 18 micromolar). Studies with KCl and Na2SO4 showed that the stimulation was due to Na+. Photosynthesis at pH 6.1 was only slightly stimulated by Na+. The response of photosynthesis at pH 8.0 to [Na+] was strongly sigmoidal for dissolved inorganic carbon ([DIC] ≤ 500 micromolar). Cells grown with high total [DIC], but air-levels of CO2, at pH 9.6 showed the same response to low [Na+]. The absence of Na+ could be partially, but not completely overcome, by higher [DIC]. Various methods for examining CO2 or HCO3 use (K½CO2 determination; isotopic disequilibrium; and consideration of HCO3 dehydration rate) were consistent with CO2 use by the cells, but HCO3 use could not be ruled out. Isotopic disequilibrium studies showed that CO2 use was stimulated by Na+. Cells grown on 5% CO2 accumulated DIC against a concentration gradient by a process (or processes) dependent on Na+. No evidence for uptake of Na+ concomitant with DIC uptake could be found. The lack of O2 evolution during the initial and most rapid period of DIC accumulation suggested that the required energy was obtained from cyclic photophosphorylation.  相似文献
