Methane Oxidation in Landfill Cover Soil   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Methane oxidation in the cover soil of the Khmet'evo municipal landfill in Moscow oblast was investigated. Methane emission from the experimental site of the landfill was highly heterogeneous. At a depth of 45–60 cm, the pore gas mainly consisted of CH4 (60–70%) and CO2 (30–40%). In the upper layers of the cover soil, the concentration of these gases sharply decreased. Methods for estimation of the methane-oxidizing activity in the cover soil of the landfill were tested. The rate of methane oxidation in the soil correlated with the cell number of culturable methanotrophic bacteria and was the factor limiting methane emission from the surface of the landfill. The method of indirect immunofluorescence revealed ten known species of methanotrophic bacteria in enrichment cultures obtained from samples of the cover soil. Our results also indicate the presence of unknown psychrotolerant methanotrophs that are active at the low temperatures characteristic of Moscow oblast.  相似文献

Termite mounds have recently been confirmed to mitigate approximately half of termite methane (CH4) emissions, but the aerobic CH4 oxidising bacteria (methanotrophs) responsible for this consumption have not been resolved. Here, we describe the abundance, composition and CH4 oxidation kinetics of the methanotroph communities in the mounds of three distinct termite species sampled from Northern Australia. Results from three independent methods employed show that methanotrophs are rare members of microbial communities in termite mounds, with a comparable abundance but distinct composition to those of adjoining soil samples. Across all mounds, the most abundant and prevalent methane monooxygenase sequences were affiliated with upland soil cluster α (USCα), with sequences homologous to Methylocystis and tropical upland soil cluster (TUSC) also detected. The reconstruction of a metagenome-assembled genome of a mound USCα representative highlighted the metabolic capabilities of this group of methanotrophs. The apparent Michaelis–Menten kinetics of CH4 oxidation in mounds were estimated from in situ reaction rates. Methane affinities of the communities were in the low micromolar range, which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than those of upland soils, but significantly lower than those measured in soils with a large CH4 source such as landfill cover soils. The rate constant of CH4 oxidation, as well as the porosity of the mound material, were significantly positively correlated with the abundance of methanotroph communities of termite mounds. We conclude that termite-derived CH4 emissions have selected for distinct methanotroph communities that are kinetically adapted to elevated CH4 concentrations. However, factors other than substrate concentration appear to limit methanotroph abundance and hence these bacteria only partially mitigate termite-derived CH4 emissions. Our results also highlight the predominant role of USCα in an environment with elevated CH4 concentrations and suggest a higher functional diversity within this group than previously recognised.Subject terms: Soil microbiology, Biogeochemistry  相似文献

Aerobic CH4 oxidation plays an important role in mitigating CH4 release from landfills to the atmosphere. Therefore, in this study, oxidation activity and community of methanotrophs were investigated in a subtropical landfill. Among the three sites investigated, the highest CH4 concentration was detected in the landfill cover soil of the site (A) without a landfill gas (LFG) recovery system, although the refuse in the site had been deposited for a longer time (∼14–15 years) compared to the other two sites (∼6–11 years) where a LFG recovery system was applied. In April and September, the higher CH4 flux was detected in site A with 72.4 and 51.7 g m−2 d−1, respectively, compared to the other sites. The abundance of methanotrophs assessed by quantification of pmoA varied with location and season. A linear relationship was observed between the abundance of methanotrophs and CH4 concentrations in the landfill cover soils (R = 0.827, P < 0.001). The key factors influencing the methanotrophic diversity in the landfill cover soils were pH, the water content and the CH4 concentration in the soil, of which pH was the most important factor. Type I methanotrophs, including Methylococcus, Methylosarcina, Methylomicrobium and Methylobacter, and type II methanotrophs (Methylocystis) were all detected in the landfill cover soils, with Methylocystis and Methylosarcina being the dominant genera. Methylocystis was abundant in the slightly acidic landfill cover soil, especially in September, and represented more than 89% of the total terminal-restriction fragment abundance. These findings indicated that the LFG recovery system, as well as physical and chemical parameters, affected the diversity and activity of methanotrophs in landfill cover soils.  相似文献

Higher yields and lower methane emissions with new rice cultivars   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7       下载免费PDF全文
Breeding high‐yielding rice cultivars through increasing biomass is a key strategy to meet rising global food demands. Yet, increasing rice growth can stimulate methane (CH4) emissions, exacerbating global climate change, as rice cultivation is a major source of this powerful greenhouse gas. Here, we show in a series of experiments that high‐yielding rice cultivars actually reduce CH4 emissions from typical paddy soils. Averaged across 33 rice cultivars, a biomass increase of 10% resulted in a 10.3% decrease in CH4 emissions in a soil with a high carbon (C) content. Compared to a low‐yielding cultivar, a high‐yielding cultivar significantly increased root porosity and the abundance of methane‐consuming microorganisms, suggesting that the larger and more porous root systems of high‐yielding cultivars facilitated CH4 oxidation by promoting O2 transport to soils. Our results were further supported by a meta‐analysis, showing that high‐yielding rice cultivars strongly decrease CH4 emissions from paddy soils with high organic C contents. Based on our results, increasing rice biomass by 10% could reduce annual CH4 emissions from Chinese rice agriculture by 7.1%. Our findings suggest that modern rice breeding strategies for high‐yielding cultivars can substantially mitigate paddy CH4 emission in China and other rice growing regions.  相似文献

Boreal forests occupy nearly one fifth of the terrestrial land surface and are recognised as globally important regulators of carbon (C) cycling and greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon sequestration processes in these forests include assimilation of CO2 into biomass and subsequently into soil organic matter, and soil microbial oxidation of methane (CH4). In this study we explored how ecosystem retrogression, which drives vegetation change, regulates the important process of soil CH4 oxidation in boreal forests. We measured soil CH4 oxidation processes on a group of 30 forested islands in northern Sweden differing greatly in fire history, and collectively representing a retrogressive chronosequence, spanning 5000 years. Across these islands the build-up of soil organic matter was observed to increase with time since fire disturbance, with a significant correlation between greater humus depth and increased net soil CH4 oxidation rates. We suggest that this increase in net CH4 oxidation rates, in the absence of disturbance, results as deeper humus stores accumulate and provide niches for methanotrophs to thrive. By using this gradient we have discovered important regulatory controls on the stability of soil CH4 oxidation processes that could not have not been explored through shorter-term experiments. Our findings indicate that in the absence of human interventions such as fire suppression, and with increased wildfire frequency, the globally important boreal CH4 sink could be diminished.  相似文献

The agricultural sector is responsible for an important part of Canadian greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, 8 % of the 747 Mt eq. CO2 emitted each year. The pork industry, a key sector of the agrifood industry, has had a rapid growth in Canada since the middle 1980s. For this industry, slurry storage accounts for the major part of methane (CH4) emissions, a GHG 25 times higher than carbon dioxide (CO2) on a 100-year time horizon. Intending to reduce these emissions, biofiltration, a process effective to treat CH4 from landfills and coal mines, could be effective to treat CH4 from the pig industry. Biofiltration is a complex process that requires the understanding of the biological process of CH4 oxidation and a control of the engineering parameters (filter bed, temperature, etc.). Some biofiltration studies show that this technology could be used to treat CH4 at a relatively low cost and with a relatively high purification performance.  相似文献

Anaerobic bacterial degradation of landfill waste produces a globally significant source of the greenhouse gas methane. Stable isotopic measurements of methane [δI3C(CH4) and δD(CH4)] can often fingerprint different sources of methane (natural vs. anthro‐pogenic) and help identify the bacterial processes involved in methane production. Landfill microbial communities are complex and diverse, and hence so too is the biogeochem‐istry of methane formation. To investigate the influence of (l) the methane formation pathway (acetoclastic methanogenesis and CO2 reduction), and (2) SD of water on the stable isotopic composition of landfill methane, two model butyrate‐degrading landfill systems were established. The systems were inoculated with domestic refuse from a landfill and incubated in the laboratory for 92 days. Both systems were identical except δD of water initially added to system 2 was 118% heavier than system 1. Between days 39 and 72 the systems were resupplemented with butyrate. Production of CH4 and CO2 and changes in volatile fatty acid concentration confirmed that active methanogenic populations had been established. CH4 became 13C enriched in both incubations with time. Interpreting changes in acetate, butyrate, and propionate concentration during incubation is complicated, but these observations and other information suggest that the dominant methanogenic substrate changed front CO2/H2 to acetate as the experiment progressed. This is also consistent with the observed 13C enrichment of CH4, as 13C discrimination during methane production from acetate is less than from CO2. In contrast, δD(CH4) remained relatively constant, suggesting that this measurement may not provide a reliable basis for distinguishing between CH4 from CO2 reduction and acetoclastic methanogenesis, as has previously been suggested.  相似文献

In-field measurements of direct soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions provide critical data for quantifying the net energy efficiency and economic feasibility of crop residue-based bioenergy production systems. A major challenge to such assessments has been the paucity of field studies addressing the effects of crop residue removal and associated best practices for soil management (i.e., conservation tillage) on soil emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane (CH4). This regional survey summarizes soil GHG emissions from nine maize production systems evaluating different levels of corn stover removal under conventional or conservation tillage management across the US Corn Belt. Cumulative growing season soil emissions of CO2, N2O, and/or CH4 were measured for 2–5 years (2008–2012) at these various sites using a standardized static vented chamber technique as part of the USDA-ARS’s Resilient Economic Agricultural Practices (REAP) regional partnership. Cumulative soil GHG emissions during the growing season varied widely across sites, by management, and by year. Overall, corn stover removal decreased soil total CO2 and N2O emissions by -4 and -7 %, respectively, relative to no removal. No management treatments affected soil CH4 fluxes. When aggregated to total GHG emissions (Mg CO2?eq ha?1) across all sites and years, corn stover removal decreased growing season soil emissions by ?5?±?1 % (mean?±?se) and ranged from -36 % to 54 % (n?=?50). Lower GHG emissions in stover removal treatments were attributed to decreased C and N inputs into soils, as well as possible microclimatic differences associated with changes in soil cover. High levels of spatial and temporal variabilities in direct GHG emissions highlighted the importance of site-specific management and environmental conditions on the dynamics of GHG emissions from agricultural soils.

Methane (CH4) is a particularly potent greenhouse gas with a radiative forcing 23 times that of CO2 on a per mass basis. Flooded rice paddies are a major source of CH4 emissions to the Earth's atmosphere. A free‐air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment was conducted to evaluate changes in crop productivity and the crop ecosystem under enriched CO2 conditions during three rice growth seasons from 1998 to 2000 in a rice paddy at Shizukuishi, Iwate, Japan. To understand the influence of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations on CH4 emission, we measured methane flux from FACE rice fields and rice fields with ambient levels of CO2 during the 1999 and 2000 growing seasons. Methane production and oxidation potentials of soil samples collected when the rice was at the tillering and flowering stages in 2000 were measured in the laboratory by the anaerobic incubation and alternative propylene substrates methods, respectively. The average tiller number and root dry biomass were clearly larger in the plots with elevated CO2 during all rice growth stages. No difference in methane oxidation potential between FACE and ambient treatments was found, but the methane production potential of soils during the flowering stage was significantly greater under FACE than under ambient conditions. When free‐air CO2 was enriched to 550 ppmv, the CH4 emissions from the rice paddy field increased significantly, by 38% in 1999 and 51% in 2000. The increased CH4 emissions were attributed to accelerated CH4 production potential as a result of more root exudates and root autolysis products and to increased plant‐mediated CH4 emissions because of the larger rice tiller numbers under FACE conditions.  相似文献

Rice variety is one of the key factors regulating methane (CH4) production and emission from the paddy fields. However, the relationships between rice varieties and populations of microorganisms involved in CH4 dynamics are poorly understood. Here we investigated CH4 dynamics and the composition and abundance of CH4‐producing archaea and CH4‐oxidizing bacteria in a Chinese rice field soil planted with three types of rice. Hybrid rice produced 50–60% more of shoot biomass than Indica and Japonica cultivars. However, the emission rate of CH4 was similar to Japonica and lower than Indica. Furthermore, the dissolved CH4 concentration in the rhizosphere of hybrid rice was markedly lower than Indica and Japonica cultivars. The rhizosphere soil of hybrid rice showed a similar CH4 production potential but a higher CH4 oxidation potential compared with the conventional varieties. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the archaeal 16S rRNA genes showed that the hydrogenotrophic methanogens dominated in the rhizosphere whereas acetoclastic methanogens mainly inhabited the bulk soil. The abundance of total archaea as determined by quantitative (real‐time) PCR increased in the later stage of rice growth. However, rice variety did not significantly influence the structure and abundance of methanogenic archaea. The analysis of pmoA gene fragments (encoding the α‐subunit of particulate methane monooxygenase) revealed that rice variety also did not influence the structure of methanotrophic proteobacteria, though variable effects of soil layer and sampling time were observed. However, the total copy number of pmoA genes in the rhizosphere of hybrid rice was approximately one order of magnitude greater than the two conventional cultivars. The results suggest that hybrid rice stimulates the growth of methanotrophs in the rice rhizosphere, and hence enhances CH4 oxidation which attenuates CH4 emissions from the paddy soil. Hybrid rice is becoming more and more popular in Asian countries. The present study demonstrated that planting of hybrid rice will not enhance CH4 emissions albeit a higher grain production than the conventional varieties.  相似文献

Microbial oxidation in aerobic soils is the primary biotic sink for atmospheric methane (CH4), a powerful greenhouse gas. Although tropical forest soils are estimated to globally account for about 28% of annual soil CH4 consumption (6.2 Tg CH4 year?1), limited data are available on CH4 exchange from tropical montane forests. We present the results of an extensive study on CH4 exchange from tropical montane forest soils along an elevation gradient (1,000, 2,000, 3,000 m) at different topographic positions (lower slope, mid-slope, ridge position) in southern Ecuador. All soils were net atmospheric CH4 sinks, with decreasing annual uptake rates from 5.9 kg CH4–C ha?1 year?1 at 1,000 m to 0.6 kg CH4–C ha?1 year?1 at 3,000 m. Topography had no effect on soil atmospheric CH4 uptake. We detected some unexpected factors controlling net methane fluxes: positive correlations between CH4 uptake rates, mineral nitrogen content of the mineral soil and with CO2 emissions indicated that the largest CH4 uptake corresponded with favorable conditions for microbial activity. Furthermore, we found indications that CH4 uptake was N limited instead of inhibited by NH4 +. Finally, we showed that in contrast to temperate regions, substantial high affinity methane oxidation occurred in the thick organic layers which can influence the CH4 budget of these tropical montane forest soils. Inclusion of elevation as a co-variable will improve regional estimates of methane exchange in these tropical montane forests.  相似文献

Winter climate change may result in reduced snow cover and could, consequently, alter the soil frost regime and biogeochemical processes underlying the exchange of methane (CH4) in boreal peatlands. In this study, we investigated the short‐term (1–3 years) vs. long‐term (11 years) effects of intensified winter soil frost (induced by experimental snow exclusion) on CH4 exchange during the following growing season in a boreal peatland. In the first 3 years (2004–2006), lower CH4 emissions in the treatment plots relative to the control coincided with delayed soil temperature increase in the treatment plots at the beginning of the growing season (May). After 11 treatment years (in 2014), CH4 emissions were lower in the treatment plots relative to the control over the entire growing season, resulting in a reduction in total growing season CH4 emission by 27%. From May to July 2014, reduced sedge leaf area coincided with lower CH4 emissions in the treatment plots compared to the control. From July to August, lower dissolved organic carbon concentrations in the pore water of the treatment plots explained 72% of the differences in CH4 emission between control and treatment. In addition, greater Sphagnum moss growth in the treatment plots resulted in a larger distance between the moss surface and the water table (i.e., increasing the oxic layer) which may have enhanced the CH4 oxidation potential in the treatment plots relative to the control in 2014. The differences in vegetation might also explain the lower temperature sensitivity of CH4 emission observed in the treatment plots relative to the control. Overall, this study suggests that greater soil frost, associated with future winter climate change, might substantially reduce the growing season CH4 emission in boreal peatlands through altering vegetation dynamics and subsequently causing vegetation‐mediated effects on CH4 exchange.  相似文献

Wetland rice cultivation is one of the major sources of atmospheric methane (CH4). Global rice production may increase by 65% between 1990 and 2025, causing an increase of methane emissions from a 92 Tg CH4 y–1 now to 131 Tg in 2025.Methane production depends strongly on the ratio oxidizing: reducing capacity of the soil. It can be influenced by e.g. addition of sulphate, which inhibits methanogenesis. The type and application mode of mineral fertilizers may also affect methane emissions. Addition of organic matter in the form of compost or straw causes an increase of methane emissions, but methane production is lower for materials with a low C/N ratio.High percolation rates in wetland rice soils and occasional drying up of the soil during the cultivation period depresses methane release. Water management practices aimed at reducing emissions are only feasible during specific periods in the rice growing season in flat lowland irrigated areas with high security of water availability and good control of the water supply. Intermittent drying of soils may not be possible on terraced rice lands.Assuming a 10 to 30% reduction in emission rates per unit harvested area, the global emission may amount to 93 Tg CH4 y in 2025. A reduction of global emissions seems very difficult. To develop techniques for reducing CH4 emissions from wetland rice fields, research is required concerning interactions between soil chemical and physical properties, and soil, water and crop management and methanogenesis. Such techniques should not adversely affect rice yields.  相似文献

Northern peatlands constitute a significant source of atmospheric methane (CH4). However, management of undisturbed peatlands, as well as the restoration of disturbed peatlands, will alter the exchange of CH4 with the atmosphere. The aim of this systematic review and meta‐analysis was to collate and analyze published studies to improve our understanding of the factors that control CH4 emissions and the impacts of management on the gas flux from northern (latitude 40° to 70°N) peatlands. The analysis includes a total of 87 studies reporting measurements of CH4 emissions taken at 186 sites covering different countries, peatland types, and management systems. Results show that CH4 emissions from natural northern peatlands are highly variable with a 95% CI of 7.6–15.7 g C m?2 year?1 for the mean and 3.3–6.3 g C m?2 year?1 for the median. The overall annual average (mean ± SD) is 12 ± 21 g C m?2 year?1 with the highest emissions from fen ecosystems. Methane emissions from natural peatlands are mainly controlled by water table (WT) depth, plant community composition, and soil pH. Although mean annual air temperature is not a good predictor of CH4 emissions by itself, the interaction between temperature, plant community cover, WT depth, and soil pH is important. According to short‐term forecasts of climate change, these complex interactions will be the main determinant of CH4 emissions from northern peatlands. Drainage significantly (p < .05) reduces CH4 emissions to the atmosphere, on average by 84%. Restoration of drained peatlands by rewetting or vegetation/rewetting increases CH4 emissions on average by 46% compared to the original premanagement CH4 fluxes. However, to fully evaluate the net effect of management practice on the greenhouse gas balance from high latitude peatlands, both net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and carbon exports need to be considered.  相似文献

Background

Rice paddies have been identified as major methane (CH4) source induced by human activities. As a major rice production region in Northern China, the rice paddies in the Three-Rivers Plain (TRP) have experienced large changes in spatial distribution over the recent 20 years (from 1990 to 2010). Consequently, accurate estimation and characterization of spatiotemporal patterns of CH4 emissions from rice paddies has become an pressing issue for assessing the environmental impacts of agroecosystems, and further making GHG mitigation strategies at regional or global levels.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Integrating remote sensing mapping with a process-based biogeochemistry model, Denitrification and Decomposition (DNDC), was utilized to quantify the regional CH4 emissions from the entire rice paddies in study region. Based on site validation and sensitivity tests, geographic information system (GIS) databases with the spatially differentiated input information were constructed to drive DNDC upscaling for its regional simulations. Results showed that (1) The large change in total methane emission that occurred in 2000 and 2010 compared to 1990 is distributed to the explosive growth in amounts of rice planted; (2) the spatial variations in CH4 fluxes in this study are mainly attributed to the most sensitive factor soil properties, i.e., soil clay fraction and soil organic carbon (SOC) content, and (3) the warming climate could enhance CH4 emission in the cool paddies.

Conclusions/Significance

The study concluded that the introduction of remote sensing analysis into the DNDC upscaling has a great capability in timely quantifying the methane emissions from cool paddies with fast land use and cover changes. And also, it confirmed that the northern wetland agroecosystems made great contributions to global greenhouse gas inventory.  相似文献

In humid ecosystems, the rate of methane (CH4) oxidation by soil‐dwelling methane‐oxidizing bacteria (MOB) is controlled by soil texture and soil water holding capacity, both of which limit the diffusion of atmospheric CH4 into the soil. However, it remains unclear whether these same mechanisms control CH4 oxidation in more arid soils. This study was designed to measure the proximate controls of potential CH4 oxidation in semiarid soils during different seasons. Using a unique and well‐constrained 3‐million‐year‐old semiarid substrate age gradient, we were able to hold state factors constant while exploring the relationship between seasonal potential CH4 oxidation rates and soil texture, soil water holding capacity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We measured unexpectedly higher rates of potential CH4 oxidation in the wet season than the dry season. Although other studies have attributed low CH4 oxidation rates in dry soils to desiccation of MOB, we present several lines of evidence that this may be inaccurate. We found that soil DOC concentration explained CH4 oxidation rates better than soil physical factors that regulate the diffusion of CH4 from the atmosphere into the soil. We show evidence that MOB facultatively incorporated isotopically labeled glucose into their cells, and MOB utilized glucose in a pattern among our study sites that was similar to wet‐season CH4 oxidation rates. This evidence suggests that DOC, which is utilized by MOB in other environments with varying effects on CH4 oxidation rates, may be an important regulator of CH4 oxidation rates in semiarid soils. Our collective understanding of the facultative use of DOC by MOB is still in its infancy, but our results suggest it may be an important factor controlling CH4 oxidation in soils from dry ecosystems.  相似文献

Methane emission from a wetland rice field as affected by salinity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The impact of salinity on CH4 emission was studied by adding salt to a Philippine rice paddy, increasing pore water EC to approx. 4 dS.m-1 Methane emission from the salt-amended plot and adjacent control plots was monitored with a closed chamber technique. The addition of salt to the rice field caused a reduction by 25% in CH4 emission. Rates of methane emissions from intact soil cores were measured during aerobic and anaerobic incubations. The anaerobic CH4 fluxes from the salt-amended soil cores were three to four times lower than from cores of the control plot, whereas the aerobic CH4 fluxes were about equal. Measurements of the potential CH4 production with depth showed that the CH4 production in the salt-amended field was strongly reduced compared to the control field. Calculation of the percentage CH4 oxidized of the anaerobic flux indicated that CH4 oxidation in the salt-amended plot was even more inhibited than CH4 production. The net result was about equal aerobic CH4 fluxes from both salt-amended plots and non-amended plots. The data illustrate the importance of both CH4 production and CH4 oxidation when estimating CH4 emission and show that the ratio between CH4 production and CH4 oxidation may depend on environmental conditions. The reduction in CH4 emission from rice paddies upon amendment with salt low in sulfate is considerably smaller than the reduction in CH4 emission observed in a similar study where fields were amended with high-sulfate containing salt (gypsum). The results indicate that CH4 emissions from wetland rice fields on saline, low-sulfate soils are lower than CH4 emissions from otherwise comparable non-saline rice tields. However, the reduction in CH4 emission is not proportional to the reduction in CH4 production  相似文献
