Two new species of Culicoides Latreille of the Neotropical subgenus Mataemyia Vargas are described and illustrated based on female specimens from Juruti, Pará, Brazil and compared with their similar congeners. The Culicoides communities have been analyzed between 1993/1998 in the area influenced by the Yacyret Dam Lake (Paran River, Argentina-Paraguay). Adults of Culicoides were collected monthly by using CDC light traps exposed for 24 h in 9 sampling sites located at both margins of the river; 21 species were recorded. Highest values of species richness were recorded during 1993/1994, being Quiteria and Corpus the sites with the higest number of species (10 and 11, respectively). The species diversity was elevated in Quiteria, Zaim n, Candelaria, Santa Tecla, Capit n Meza and Corpus (Shannon's diversity index 1.0-1.9) while Corate , Ituzaing and Aguapey showed less richness and diversity. The more abundant species were C. insignis, C. venezuelensis, C. leopoldoi, C. limai, C. flinti, C. debilipalpis, C. paraensis and C. guttatus. C. insignis, potential vector of bluetongue virus (BTV) to domestic and wild rumiants in the Neotropical region, is the predominant species in the area and was the only species widely distributed. C. paraensis, a proven vector of Oropouche virus to humans, is a common and abundant species. C. pusillus and C. lahillei, potential vectors of BTV and a filarial parasite, respectively, were occasionally collected. The taxonomic structure of communities was constant during the study period. The occasional species were not characteristic to one particular site and their presence could be related to non-intrinsic conditions. 相似文献

“ Candidatus Cardinium hertigii” ( Bacteroidetes) is a maternally inherited endosymbiont known from several arthropods. Its mechanisms for persistence in host populations are mostly reproductive manipulation, though it has been occasionally reported to improve fitness parameters in several hosts. In Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) biting midges, the prevalence of “ Candidatus Cardinium” infection was documented as moderate, with no detectable sex bias. We therefore investigated whether “ Candidatus Cardinium” affects important fitness parameters, such as survival and body size, in Culicoides imicola, a dominant vector species. Field-collected midges were trapped and analyzed for survival under different environmental conditions and antibiotic treatment, taking into account “ Candidatus Cardinium” infection status and parity status (i.e., parous or nulliparous). Additionally, wing lengths were measured as a proxy parameter for body size and analyzed together with “ Candidatus Cardinium” infection data. The findings revealed no difference in survival of Culicoides infected with “ Candidatus Cardinium” and that of uninfected midges in both parity states and under all tested conditions: optimal, starvation, heat, and antibiotic treatment. Beyond survival, no wing length difference was found for “ Candidatus Cardinium”-infected versus uninfected midges. In aggregate, these findings support our conclusion that “ Candidatus Cardinium” does not have an overt effect on the survival and size of adult C. imicola midges. “ Candidatus Cardinium” may affect immature stages or may alter adult reproductive performance. 相似文献

Abstract A taxonomic study of midges collected in the subantarctic islands of New Zealand yielded 22 species of Chironomidae and 4 of Ceratopogonidae. Only four of the chironomids occur elsewhere, three on ‘mainland’ New Zealand and one on The Snares islands. Of the 15 species found on the Auckland Islands, 11 on Campbell Island, and 5 on the Antipodes Islands, respectively 9, 4, and 2 are endemic. Nine new species are proposed in existing genera: Parochlus rennelli, P. reductus, P. gressitti, P. brevis, Telmatogeton antipodensis, Eukiefferiella heveli, Cricotopus aucklandensis, Chironomus antipodensis, and C. subantarcticus. Gressittius n.gen. is proposed for Corethra antarctica Hudson (type-species). Semiocladius n.gen. is proposed for Camptocladius crassipennis Skuse, and S. kuscheli n.sp. is described. Eight further new genera are proposed, with the following new species as type-species: Kuschelius dentifer, Mecaorus elongatus, Pterosis wisei, Hevelius carinatus, Gynnidocladius pilulus, Nesiocladius gressitti, Nakataia cisdentifer, and Maryella reducta. Genera Halirytus Eaton and Psamathiomya Deby are synonymised with Telmatogeton Schiner. Gressittius antarcticus (Hudson), Ablabesmyia mala (Hutton), Telmatogeton magellanicus (Jacobs), T. amphibius (Eaton), T. macquariensis (Brundin), Semiocladius crassipennis (Skuse), S. endocladiae (Tokunaga), and Calopsectra funebris (Freeman) are new combinations. Of the ceratopogonids, only one species occurs elsewhere in New Zealand. Three species, only one of them endemic, were found on the Auckland Islands; two were found on Campbell, of which only one is endemic. Forcipomyia kuscheli and Dasyhelea aucklandensis are proposed as new species. 相似文献

Surveys based on the density of the adult wheat midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), were conducted at ground level and at heights between 10 and 75 m in Xushui county (39.02 °N, 115.65 °E), Hebei province, China, in 2011. The HYSPLIT-4 model was used to analyze the possible dispersion trajectories and distances of S. mosellana depending on the experimental location. The wheat midges were trapped at altitudes from 10 to 75 m a.g.l. strongly suggest that they might also be present at much higher altitudes, where potentially, they could take advantage of the fast moving air currents. 6-h backward-trajectories indicate that adult S. mosellana could have come from both north and south, and the trajectory distances were 25–107 Km. 6-h forward-trajectories indicate that adults most likely migrated to an area located in Tianjin, Beijing and northern Hebei province, north china, and the trajectory distances were 28–195 Km. In this study, no male midges were captured at 10 m or above, which suggest male midges don’t engage in wind borne long distance migration, suggesting S. mosellana mated before dispersal. The information presented here is helpful to alter the way we view their migration over limited distances and add to our ability in outbreak forecasts. 相似文献

Traps are widely employed for sampling and monitoring mosquito populations forsurveillance, ecological and fauna studies. Considering the importance of assessingother technologies for sampling mosquitoes, we addressed the effectiveness ofMosquito Magnet ® Independence (MMI) in comparison with those of the CDCtrap with CO2 and Lurex3 ® (CDC-A) and the CDC light trap (CDC-LT). Fieldcollections were performed in a rural area within the Atlantic Forest biome,southeastern state of São Paulo, Brazil. The MMI sampled 53.84% of the total numberof mosquitoes, the CDC-A (26.43%) and CDC-LT (19.73%). Results of the Pearsonchi-squared test (χ2) showed a positive association between CDC-LT and species ofCulicini and Uranotaeniini tribes. Additionally, our results suggested a positiveassociation between CDC-A and representatives of the Culicini and Aedini tribes,whereas the MMI was positively associated with the Mansoniini and Sabethini as wellas with Anophelinae species. The MMI sampled a greater proportion (78.27%) ofindividuals of Anopheles than either the CDC-LT (0.82%) or the CDC-Atraps (20.91%). Results of the present study showed that MMI performed better thanCDC-LT or CDC-A in sampling mosquitoes in large numbers, medically important speciesand assessing diversity parameters in rural southeastern Atlantic Forest. 相似文献

La Maladie de la Langue bleue est une maladie non contagieuse qui affecte les ruminants domestiques et sauvages. Depuis son extension au Nord de l’Europe en 2006, cette épizootie virale a engendré des pertes économiques considérables sur le cheptel ovin et bovin. Les vecteurs biologiques du virus de la FCO (BTV) sont des moucherons appartenant au genre Culicoides. De nombreuses inconnues subsistent encore sur leur biologie, physiologie, écologie et distribution. Cette étude montre que ces moucherons piqueurs sont bien plus abondants au niveau de la ferme que dans les prairies avoisinantes; ces dernières présentent toutefois une plus grande diversité spécifique. C’est ainsi que la possibilité de migration entre la prairie et la ferme est émise pour les espèces C. chiopterus et C. dewulfi. Tant pour la ferme que pour la prairie, les femelles sont beaucoup plus représentées que les mâles. L’observation de la physiologie de celles-ci est réalisée tout au long de l’étude. 相似文献

In Côte d'Ivoire, rubber cultivation has more than doubled since 2010. These mass agricultural areas require a large workforce with little information on how this environment might impact risk of mosquito-borne diseases. The objective of this study was to assess the larval ecology of mosquitoes in rubber areas of Dabou, Côte d'Ivoire. From January to June 2017, an entomological survey was conducted of mature (MP) and immature (IP) rubber plantations, as well as in villages surrounded by rubber plantations (SV) and remote from rubber plantations (RV). The number and type of potential and positive breeding sites were recorded, and mosquito larval densities and diversity were estimated. Seven genera divided into 31 species including major vector such as Anopheles gambiae s.l. and Aedes aegypti were identified. A total of 1,660 waterbodies were identified with a larvae positivity rate of 63.1%. A majority of waterbodies were identified in SV (N?=?875, 53.4% positivity rate), followed by MP (N?=?422, 81.8% positivity rate), IP (N?=?194, 72.2% positivity rate) and least in RV (N?=?169, 57.4% positivity rate). The most important breeding sites for disease vectors were leaf axils in IP (N?=?108, 77.1%), latex collection cups in MP (N?=?332, 96.2%) and the containers abandoned in the SV (N?=?242, 51.8%) as well as in the RV (N?=?59, 60.8%). All these results allow us to affirm that the cultivation of rubber trees has an impact on the larval ecology by increasing the number of available sites and favoring a high larval density and diversity. 相似文献

Small ponds ( ≤ 2 ha) are often a common landscape feature, but their ecology has been less well studied than that of lakes.
Studies of some lakes and reservoirs show among-year repeatability in the seasonal abundance of different zooplankton (i.e.,
succession). For small ponds the seasonal dynamics of zooplankton community structure are relatively unstudied, as are any
mechanisms underlying these dynamics. We took a community-level approach to studying the spring–summer abundance of zooplankton
in two small Ohio ponds. In particular we wanted to know if repeatable patterns exist for zooplankton community structure
in these ponds. We surveyed the spring–summer zooplankton communities in the ponds from 2001 to 2003 and used community-level
ordination techniques (i.e., non-metric multidimensional scaling, NMDS) to characterize the assemblages. For both ponds the
seasonal pattern of total zooplankton abundance differed significantly among years. We found that the proportional abundance
of taxa across the season also varied among years. Elements of the zooplankton community, as described by the NMDS dimensions,
showed among-year variation in the spring–summer trajectories that developed. Some of the variation in these zooplankton communities
was associated with seasonal changes in water temperature. This among-year variation in the seasonal pattern of zooplankton
community structure suggests that community dynamics in these small ponds may not be very repeatable. These complex dynamics
of zooplankton thus challenges us to improve our characterization of zooplankton communities in small ponds such that we can
better understand the factors that drive the patterns we observe. 相似文献

A clinical report of otomyiasis in a 1-year-old girl is reported. A III instar larva of Sarcophaga sp. was microscopically identified and Sarcophaga ( Liopygia) argyrostoma (Diptera, Sarcophagidae) was suspected. A molecular method targeting a fragment of the cox1 gene was used to confirm the identity of the specimen. Although myiases are not frequent manifestations in otolaryngology, they should arouse the attention of doctors, social workers and parents dealing with disabled people, the elderly and children. This contribution also highlights the need of combining microscopy and molecular tools to achieve a correct and reliable identification of the specimen/s. 相似文献

Nearly 230 species of biting midges have been recorded or described from Argentina; 38 of them are known from the Buenos Aires province and only one is cited from Martín García Island. This paper presents the results raised from six collecting trips which took place on the island during spring 2005, summer 2006 and autumn 2009. Diverse sampling sites including permanent and temporary aquatic environments were chosen, most of the ten sampling sites were ponds of diverse origin, some of these environments were covered with floating vegetation as Lemna gibba, Lemna minuscule, Salvinia biloba, Salvinia minima, Azolla filiculoides, Limnobium laevigatum, Pistia stratiotes, Spirodela intermedia, Wolffiella oblonga and Wolffia columbiana. Other sites were placed in urban and suburban areas. Adults were collected with sweep nets at sunrise and sunset and with light traps at intervals of four to five hours at night, depending on electricity availability on the island. Larvae and pupae were collected with different implements depending on characteristics of each surveyed aquatic habitat. In free standing water, they were captured with small sieves or hand pipettes and micropipettes, flotation techniques were utilized for sampling vegetated areas, free and rooted floating hydrophytes were extracted for removing insects among them. Thirteen species of Ceratopogonidae were collected, three of Atrichopogon Kieffer, three of Forcipomyia Meigen, two of Dasyhelea Kieffer, four of Culicoides Latreille, and one of Bezzia Kieffer, all representing new records from the island. 相似文献

The species composition of the family Anthomyiidae in six peat-bogs in the Šumava Mts is analysed with regards to dominance,
constancy, seasonal occurrence and type of distribution of each species. Anthomyiid communities in all sites are compared
based on the number of species, species richness, diversity and equitability indices, as well as coefficients of similarity
and Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Three collecting methods are compared: yellow pan water traps (439 specimens/43 species),
sweeping (93/18) and Malaise traps (97/22). Three species, Pegoplata aestiva (24.17%), Delia platura (14.47%), and Hylemya nigrimana (11.29%) were eudominant, two further species were dominant: Delia cardui (8.74%) and Botanophila fugax (8.27%). Two species, Botanophilia fugax and Delia platura, were found in all study sites. These species, together with those collected in five sites ( Delia cardui, Heterostylodes nominabilis and Hylemya vagans), had a constancy rate higher than 75% and belonged to the category of euconstant species. 相似文献

In April 2009, a wild maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, was captured in an area of cerrado in Brasília, DF, Brazil, with screw worm maggots in external wounds. Fifty larvae were bred in the laboratory and eight adults of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) emerged 10 days after pupation. This is the first report of a myiasis by C. hominivorax in a free-living maned wolf in Brazil. 相似文献

To address how physiological age, container type and the number of substrates affect Aedes aegypti skip-oviposition behavior, we examined egg distribution by individual females across consecutive gonotrophic cycles. We found no support for the effect of age on egg distribution. However, the hypothesis that both the variety and color of the container would influence skip-oviposition behavior was confirmed. Skip-oviposition behavior remained unchanged throughout the female’s life. The egg distribution pattern was characterized by a significantly higher oviposition rate in one site, with residual eggs distributed in groups of 1–30 eggs. Regardless type, most eggs were registered in dark containers. These data suggest that females contribute equally to population dynamics throughout their lifespan and illustrates the impact of color on egg dispersion. 相似文献

Aedeagal morphology of two sibling cactophilic species, Drosophila buzzatii Patterson & Wheeler and Drosophila koepferae Fontdevila & Wasserman, was analyzed in nine allopatric and three sympatric locations throughout South America. Morphological differences were detected for both aedeagus size and shape between sympatric and allopatric populations of D. buzzatii, despite the significant variability within both groups. Populations of D. buzzatii sympatric with D. koepferae displayed smaller aedeagus than the allopatric ones as well as more differentiated aedeagus shape. The shape differences were non-allometric and mainly consisted in a change of curvature of the dorsal margin of the aedeagus being more pronounced in males from populations sympatric with D. koepferae. It is concluded that aedeagal morphology presented some degree of character displacement in both size and shape in populations of D. buzzatii in sympatry with D. koepferae. These results might suggest the existence of mechanisms of interspecific recognition and hybridization prevention between these species that include the morphology of the male genitalia. 相似文献
