Summary The sub-antarctic limpet Nacella edgari (Powell) (Patellidae) has avoidance and escape responses to the sea star Anasterias perrieri (Smith) (Asteriidae) in a kelp forest and in the laboratory. Nacella edgari was preyed upon in the field by A. perrieri, but frequency of capture was low, suggesting the effectiveness of defensive behaviors. Both avoidance and escape responses by the limpet consisted of extension and waving of the pallial tentacles, mushrooming and rotation of the shell and flight. However, escape responses were characterized by greatly intensified rotation of the shell through a horizontal plane. This study extends the evaluation of defensive responses in gastropods to a species which occurs in the southern Indian Ocean.  相似文献

In Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, an adult male Cebus capucinus was observed repeatedly hitting a venomous snake (Bothropsasper) with a branch. Initially a large dead branch overhanging the snake had been broken off in the course of aggressive displays to the snake by the adult and two subadult males. The snake's escape was apparently prevented by the weight of the fallen branch and possibly by the injuries caused by its fall. This is the first direct observation of a capuchin monkey in a natural habitat using a tool.  相似文献

Adults of a stink bug,Megacopta punctissimum, form mating aggregations on their host plants, based on the gregarious habit of males. A female was released on a stem on which there was an aggregation of 2 mating pairs and 1 bachelor male. Next, the bachelor male was released on a stem on which no bugs were present, and the same female was released there. Sequences of courtship behavior were compared between them. This experiement was repeated for 41 pairs of males and females, and about half (20 cases) of these experiments were made in the reverse order. Males were the active sex in courtship, whilst females either accepted the courtship, or escaped from courting males. Females accepted courtship with a higher probability when males courted in aggregations (73%) compared to solitary conditions (22%). This was because the escape behavior of females from the males was reduced if females detected the presence of other bugs near the males. It was concluded that female choice is a selective force for gregariousness in males.  相似文献

Summary The diurnal escape response of fringetoed lizards (Uma notata) startled by predators demonstrates clear directional orientation not likely to depend on local landmarks in the shifting sands of their desert environment. Evidence that celestial orientation is involved in this behavior has been sought in the present experiments by testing the effects of (1) phase shifting the animal's internal clock by 6 h and (2) by training the lizards to seek shelter while exposed to natural polarization patterns. In the first case, 90° shifts in escape direction were demonstrated in outdoor tests, as expected if a time-compensated sun or sky polarized light compass is involved. In the second instance, significant bimodale-vector dependent orientation was found under an overhead polarizing light filter but this was only evident when the response data were transposed to match the zenithe-vector rotation dependent on the sun's apparent movement through the sky. This extends to reptiles the capacity to utilize overheade-vector directions as a time-compensated sky compass. The sensory site of this discrimination and the relative roles of sun and sky polarization in nature remain to be discovered.  相似文献

Calanus finmarchicus, the dominant mesozooplankter of the North Atlantic, is an important food source for many fishes and other planktivores. This species, which has limited diel vertical migration, depends on its fast-start escape response to evade predators. It has myelinated neuronal axons, which contribute to its rapid and powerful escape response. The thermal environment that C. finmarchicus inhabits ranges from below 0 degrees C to 16 degrees C. Previous studies have shown that respiration, growth, and reproductive rates are strongly dependent on temperature, with Q10 > 2.5. A comparable dependence of the escape response could place the animal at higher risk for cold-compensated predators. Our work focused on the temperature dependence of the behavioral response to stimuli that mimic predatory attacks. We found that in contrast to other biological processes, all aspects of the escape response showed a low dependence on temperature, with Q10 values below 2. This low temperature dependence was consistent for escape parameters that involved neural as well as muscle components of the behavioral response. These findings are discussed in the contexts of the predator-prey relations of copepods and the thermal dependence of behavior in other taxa.  相似文献

The incidental capture of non-target and undersized target species during commercial fishing operations has been identified as a major issue and ongoing challenge for fisheries management. In the Northern Zone rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) fishery (NZRLF) of South Australia, escape gaps have been mandatory in all commercial fishing traps since 2002 to reduce non-target species (by-catch) catch rates and juvenile lobster mortality. This study used in situ video monitoring of by-catch species in traps with and without escape gaps to understand how by-catch species interact within commercial fishing traps. Twenty-two different by-catch species were observed entering commercial rock lobster traps, 20 of which were temperate reef finfish. Overall, on-board by-catch rates were significantly higher in hauled traps without escape gaps and were dominated by reef-dwelling finfish species, particularly Meuschenia hippocrepis and Notolabrus tetricus. However, in situ video monitoring within traps showed no difference in the maximum number of finfish by-catch (MaxN) in traps with or without escape gaps. We suggest that the difference in by-catch rates between hauled traps with and without escape gaps may be driven by species-specific behavioural interactions within traps prior to hauling. Overall, this study shows that the implementation of escape gaps in the NZRLF has considerably reduced fishery by-catch rates. Furthermore, the use of in situ video monitoring has provided a better understanding of by-catch behavioural interactions within traps, not previously identified in on-board sampling research, which may partly explain the mechanisms underpinning escape gap effectiveness.  相似文献

Summary The littoral sandhopperTalitrus saltator Montagu maintains its position along the beach mainly by means of an innate solar orientation. Different populations show different directional tendencies depending on the direction of the sealand axis. Experiments were designed which aimed to disentangle the innate and acquired components of the escape orientation. Therefore, the solar orientation of experienced adults living on shores subject to fluctuations of the shoreline and of their laboratory-born (inexperienced) offspring were compared. The innate sun compass orientation shown by the young is modified by learning during life under natural conditions, depending on the variability of the shore. Results showed: (1) an improvement in the solar orientation in individuals living on relatively constant shores; (2) a loss of precision in individuals living on highly dynamic shores; (3) a change to a new ecologically efficient escape direction in individuals living on a relatively stable lagoon shore.Abbreviation TED theoretical escape direction  相似文献

Termites were the first animal to form societies. Two hundred million years of evolution provide for a multitude of innate social behaviors that can be experimentally dissected. These fine‐tuned patterns of behavior are especially interesting when observing group decision making in the panic mode. In this study, we examined behavioral patterns of termites under panic conditions to gain insight into how an escape flow self‐organizes. One hundred worker and 10 soldier Coptotermes formosanus were released into agar plates. After a disturbance was created most workers followed each other and ran along the wall of dishes, thus forming a unidirectional escape flow, whereas soldiers showed a significantly higher frequency of moving to the center of the arena or on periphery of the escape flow as compared to workers. Agonistic behavior was usually observed as soldiers moved to center or periphery. This is the first report on the behavioral repertoire of termites when panicked, with details on the behavioral polymorphism of workers and soldiers during an escape.  相似文献

Escape theory predicts that the probability of fleeing and flight initiation distance (predator–prey distance when escape begins) increase as predation risk increases and decrease as escape cost increases. These factors may apply even to highly cryptic species that sometimes must flee. Horned lizards (Phrynosoma) rely on crypsis because of coloration, flattened body form, and lateral fringe scales that reduce detectability. At close range they sometimes squirt blood‐containing noxious substances and defend themselves with cranial spines. These antipredatory traits are highly derived, but little is known about the escape behavior of horned lizards. Of particular interest is whether their escape decisions bear the same relationships to predation risk and opportunity costs of escaping as in typical prey lacking such derived defenses. We investigated the effects of repeated attack and direction of predator turning on P. cornutum and of opportunity cost of fleeing during a social encounter in P. modestum. Flight initiation distance was greater for the second of two successive approaches and probability of fleeing decreased as distance between the turning predator and prey increased, but was greater when the predator turned toward than away from a lizard. Flight initiation distance was shorter during social encounters than when lizards were solitary. For all variables studied, risk assessment by horned lizards conforms to the predictions of escape theory and is similar to that in other prey despite their specialized defenses. Our findings show that these specialized, derived defenses coexist with a taxonomically widespread, plesiomorphic method of making escape decisions. They suggest that escape theory based on costs and benefits, as intended, applies very generally, even to highly cryptic prey that have specialized defense mechanisms.  相似文献

Predation has profound effects on the phenotypes of animal prey and, in lizards, the relationship between coloration and antipredatory behaviour has been studied in depth. However, studies that address the relationships between dorsal patterns and tail coloration with escape behaviour in polymorphic lizards are absent in the literature. We describe dorsal morphs and measured tail coloration and escape behaviour in hatchling Iberian wall lizards, Podarcis hispanicus, a species with a previously undescribed female‐restricted dorsal polymorphism (reticulated‐blotched males, and either striped or reticulated‐blotched females) and juvenile tails with conspicuous blue coloration, which is probably used to divert predator attacks towards the autotomizable tail. Overall we provide evidence for the existence of sexual dimorphism in tail ultraviolet reflectance between reticulated females and males, with striped females being intermediate. We identified sex/dorsal morph, body size and tail brightness as predictors of different aspects of escape behaviour and suggest the existence of two alternative escape strategies between striped and reticulated‐blotched females that may be dependent on dorsal morph differences, independently of sex. Reticulated‐blotched females, and also males (all reticulated‐blotched), ran faster and spent less time paused than striped females, which might reflect an escape behaviour strategy based on endurance in striped females. In addition, lowland males displayed tail waving as a ‘last resort’ antipredator strategy that may be related to fatigue. We concluded that hatchling antipredatory behaviour is influenced by both dorsal pattern and tail conspicuousness. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 1094–1106.  相似文献

1. This article reports the responses of wild, adult jacamars to butterflies with distinct coloration types in central Brazil. Fully aposematic species, i.e. those exhibiting bright and/or contrasting colours on both wing surfaces (= A/A), were predominantly sight‐rejected by birds and, with one exception, the few butterflies attacked and captured were taste‐rejected afterwards. 2. Aposematic and cryptic butterflies, i.e. those exhibiting bright and/or contrasting colours on the upper and cryptic colours on the underwings (= A/C) were sight‐rejected while flying, when they show their conspicuous colours to predators. This suggests that birds associate butterfly colours with their difficulty of capture, as in the case of Morpho and several Coliadinae species. These butterflies, however, were heavily attacked at rest, when they are cryptic. 3, Fully cryptic butterflies, i.e. those exhibiting cryptic colours on both wing surfaces (= C/C) did not elicit sight rejections by birds. Comparisons involving the number of attacks and the capture success of flying and resting individuals showed no significant differences in species more frequently observed like some cracker butterflies (Hamadryas feronia and H. februa) and Taygetis laches. Compared with the A/C Coliadinae, these butterflies showed a lesser, although not significantly different, ability to escape while flying, but a greater and significantly different ability to escape while at rest. 4, A hunting tactic of jacamars, which consists of following flying A/C and C/C butterflies on sight, and waiting until they perch to locate and attack them, is described for the first time.  相似文献

When attacked, crickets may shed or ‘autotomize’ an entrapped limb in order to escape a would‐be predator. We examined the relationship between limb autotomy, running speed and susceptibility to future predation in house crickets (Acheta domestica). Hind limb autotomy resulted in a significant reduction in escape speed and ability to jump during the escape run, and greater predation by both lizards (striped skink Mabuya striata punctatissima) and mice (pouched mouse Saccostomus campestris). Although limb autotomy may enable a house cricket to escape a predatory encounter, autotomy of even one hind limb results in immediate costs to escape speed in crickets and makes the animal more vulnerable to subsequent predator encounters.  相似文献

The ecologically efficient escape direction assumed by Gryllotalpa gryllotalpais learned by the larvae after they leave the maternal nest. Nonetheless, larvae hatched in the laboratory are innately capable of using the sun to maintain a set escape direction. The species can also modify the set point of its sun compass to conform to topographical changes encountered during its wanderings.  相似文献

Most natural populations of Eurasian sturgeons have declined dramatically during recent decades, reaching historic low levels today. During the same period, sturgeon has become very popular in European aquaculture. Because many hatcheries are located near rivers, their unintentional escape is often documented, especially during floods. Until now, no cases of successful hybridization of these escaped fish with wild stocks have been reported. In this study, the genetic structure of a highly threatened population of sterlets (Acipenser ruthenus) from the Upper Danube was analysed as a requirement for their conservation. Surprisingly, we observed genotypes and morphotypes of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii), as well as hybrids between this species and native sterlets. This hybridization poses a serious threat for the survival of this isolated sterlet population in the upper part of the Danube. For the first time, natural reproduction is documented for Siberian sturgeon outside their natural range in Europe. This finding demonstrates the risk of extinction by hybridisation of endangered populations. We would like to stress that taking into consideration the risks for native sturgeon populations, farmed sturgeon should not be released into the wild, and all measures should be taken to prevent their accidental escape.  相似文献

Disturbances to monitors and baits have often been noted as a confounding factor for the success of termite baiting systems. We studied escape behavior of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki to a food source disturbance in the laboratory. Four peripheral chambers connected to the central food chamber through tubes served as escape routes from which escape patterns, escape and return times and differences in soldier and worker responses were recorded. We used two sand conditions: moist and dry to test whether favorable versus unfavorable conditions change escape behavior. The post disturbance responses were video recorded for 1 h. C. formosanus quickly escaped from the central chamber when disturbed. The time taken to reach the maximum number of termites that escaped ranged from 20 s to 210 s followed by a gradual return to the disturbed chamber. The majority of the escapees returned to the disturbed area within a few minutes after evacuation in both dry and wet sand conditions. A significantly higher percentage of termites escaped in wet sand arenas (43%) than in the dry sand arenas (31%). Our experiments demonstrate that C. formosanus is highly unlikely to abandon bait stations for extensive periods of time as a result of mechanical disturbances regardless of habitat quality.  相似文献

Small crustaceans, such as the rockpool prawn Palaemon elegans Rathke, respond to the approach of predators by executing a version of the crustacean tail-flip response, known as the ‘jack-knife’. We used two types of stimulus to investigate the escape behaviour of P. elegans, specifically the escape trajectories taken by individual prawns. The first stimulus consisted of mechanosensory cues, while the second stimulus included visual and mechanosensory cues. Responses to the two stimulus types differed, with the combined cues from the second stimulus type resulting in escapes over longer distances, and with greater directionality, compared to those following purely mechanosensory stimulation. Altering the direction of approach of the ‘predator’ affected the proportion of escapes that were to the side opposite from the eliciting stimulus and strongly influenced escape trajectories. Such unpredictability in the escape direction of P. elegans may be an example of so-called ‘Protean’ behaviour.  相似文献

The role of crop-to-weed gene flow is often controversial and overlooked. As a consequence, the likelihood of spontaneous crop-to-weed hybridization in most crop/weed systems is generally unknown. The lack of data relating to the formation of crop/weed hybrids has particular contemporary significance when considering the wide scale commercial release of transgenic crop plants and the potential for escape of engineered genes via crop-to-weed hybridization. We created an experimental system whereby we could examine the incidence and rate of spontaneous crop-to-weed hybridization between Sorghum bicolor and S. halepense, johnsongrass. An isozyme marker was used to identify hybrid plants through progeny testing. Incidence and rate of hybridization were highly variable with respect to weed distance from the crop, location of the study site, and year the study was performed. Crop/weed hybrids were detected at distances of 0.5–100 m from the crop. Interspecific hybridization can and does occur in this system at a substantial and measurable rate. Transgenes introduced into crop sorghum can be expected to have the opportunity to escape cultivation through interspecific hybridization with johnsongrass. Traits that prove to be beneficial to weeds possessing them can be expected to persist and spread. This is an issue that needs to be addressed when developing biosafety guidelines for the commercial release of transgenic sorghums.  相似文献

A total of 216 egg sacs of Latrodectus hasselti Thorell was examined to determine the proportion of infertile or otherwise inviable eggs. This proportion varied greatly between egg sacs but there was no consistent trend towards an increase or decrease in fecundity or fertility in sequences of egg sacs produced by given female spiders. It is suggested that the production of inviable eggs, by providing an early food source, may enable spiderlings to escape from unfavourable areas.  相似文献

A box trap was developed for effective collection of large predaceous diving beetles. The floating trap, which was fabricated from a plastic box with two funnel mouths equipped with mesh lids, can be opened only when beetles enter the trap. Considerable attention was paid to the trap's performance as it was quantitatively evaluated in laboratory conditions in detail using Cybister and Dytiscus diving beetles. Without the mesh lid on the trap mouth (negative control test), the number of beetles in the trap was the highest at 2–3 hours. However, most beetles escaped from the trap without a mesh lid within six hours of starting the experiment. When eight beetles were put into a trap without a mesh lid, all of them had escaped from it after eight hours. On the contrary, beetles did not escape from a trap with a mesh lid. This result and testing in the field suggest that trap lids have a significant role in averting the escape of beetles from the trap.  相似文献

We describe cooperative hunting by Brown-necked Raven (Corvus ruficollis) on Egyptian Mastigure (Uromastyx aegyptius) in the Arava Valley, Israel. At first, in all nine observed hunts, the ravens were observed to be in the vicinity and were seen simultaneously. The Mastigure was almost always at a distance from the burrow entrance and either foraging on the bushes or lying flattened on a bush sunning itself. The attack started when a circling pair of ravens flew in at high speed and landed on the entrance of the burrow, cutting off the escape route of the lizard. Following this maneuver, the other ravens attacked the lizard. The ravens pecked randomly at the most exposed part of the lizard, eventually causing its death. Only when the lizard was evidently dead did the two individuals that blocked the escape route join in the feeding ravens.  相似文献
