Most birds have simple genitalia; males lack external genitalia and females have simple vaginas. However, male waterfowl have a phallus whose length (1.5->40 cm) and morphological elaborations vary among species and are positively correlated with the frequency of forced extra-pair copulations among waterfowl species. Here we report morphological complexity in female genital morphology in waterfowl and describe variation vaginal morphology that is unprecedented in birds. This variation comprises two anatomical novelties: (i) dead end sacs, and (ii) clockwise coils. These vaginal structures appear to function to exclude the intromission of the counter-clockwise spiralling male phallus without female cooperation. A phylogenetically controlled comparative analysis of 16 waterfowl species shows that the degree of vaginal elaboration is positively correlated with phallus length, demonstrating that female morphological complexity has co-evolved with male phallus length. Intersexual selection is most likely responsible for the observed coevolution, although identifying the specific mechanism is difficult. Our results suggest that females have evolved a cryptic anatomical mechanism of choice in response to forced extra-pair copulations.  相似文献

The monogonont rotifer Bryceella stylata was investigated with light, electron and confocal laser scanning (CLSM) microscopy to provide detailed insights into its anatomy and new information for future phylogenetic analyses of the group. Results from CLSM and phalloidin staining revealed a total of six paired longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales I-VI) and eight circular muscles (musculi circulares I-VIII) as well a complex network of mostly fine visceral muscles. In comparison with other rotifer species that have been investigated so far, B. stylata shares the presence of the circular and longitudinal muscles: musculus longitudinalis ventralis, musculus longitudinalis lateralis inferior, musculus longitudinalis dorsalis, musculus longitudinalis capitis and musculus circumpedalis. However, the species lacks lateral and dorsolateral longitudinal muscles and some circular muscles (e.g., corona sphincter, musculus pars coronalis). With light and electron microscopy, we were able to document the precise number of pseudosegments and the arrangement of the chambers comprising the trophi elements. Furthermore, our observations revealed several new morphological characteristics, including a shield-like epidermal projection covering the dorsal antenna, an epidermal projection restricting the corona caudally and an unpaired hypopharynx with distinct shovel-like structures.  相似文献

Cavia intermedia, a rare species of cavy found exclusively on Moleques do Sul Island, Brazil, differs from other cavies in genetic and morphological characteristics and has been regarded as phylogenetically closest to Cavia magna. Here, I present morphological evidence for the likely origin of Cavia intermedia from an ancestor shared with Cavia magna: an external female genital organ similar in size and appearance to the male's penis. Masculinization of the female genitalia has been observed in Cavia magna but does not occur in Cavia aperea, which suggests a sister relationship between Cavia magna and Cavia intermedia.  相似文献

Defining species accurately is a critical need in fundamental disciplines such as ecology and evolutionary biology and in applied arenas such as pest management. The validity of species designations depends on agreement of different methods of species diagnosis for unique biological species. The Bactrocera dorsalis complex of fruit flies provide an excellent opportunity for such a test of the congruence of different techniques (e.g. morphological, molecular, host-plant based, chemotaxonomy) used for species diagnosis. The complex contains a large number of closely-related species, is distributed over a wide geographical range in South-east Asia and considerable information has been compiled on some species. In the present study, the morphological and biological species boundaries were compared using new data from morphometric analyses of reproductive and body parts, together with a review of data on morphology, chemistry of male pheromones that are important in courtship and mating, molecular analyses, and endemic rainforest host plants. For the populations studied ( Bactrocera carambolae , Bactrocera dorsalis , Bactrocera occipitalis , Bactrocera papayae , Bactrocera philippinensis , Bactrocera kandiensis and Bactrocera invadens ) there appears to be significant congruence between the morphological and biological species boundaries.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 217–226.  相似文献

The mammalian external genitalia are specialized appendages for efficient copulation, internal fertilization and display marked morphological variation among species. In this paper, we described the embryonic development of mouse genital tubercle (GT), an anlage of the external genitalia utilizing the scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. It has been shown that the Distal Urethral Epithelium (DUE) may fulfill an essential role in the outgrowth control of the GT. Our present SEM analysis revealed a small distal protrusion at the tip of the GT of normal embryos as well as some morphological differences between male and female embryonic external genitalia. Previous analysis shows that the teratogenic dose of Retinoic Acid (RA) induces a drastic marformation of the urethral plate, but not gross abnormalities for GT outgrowth. Interestingly, a small distal protrusion at the tip of GT was clearly observed also after RA treatement. Furthermore, we showed that treatment with anti-androgen flutamide resulted in the demasculinization of the GT in males. The unique character of GT development and the sexual dimorphism are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a major cause of traumatic myiasis in livestock in Central and Eastern Europe and in countries bordering the Mediterranean. The present study explored the utility of external body characters, genitalia characters and mitochondrial DNA characters for identification of this and related species in the subfamily Paramacronychiinae. Sequence analyses of the 3' terminal 273 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene revealed two lineages of W. magnifica , one from Spain and France and the other from the rest of Eurasia, differing by only two base pairs. Phylogenetic analysis of cytochrome b showed that W. magnifica and Wohlfahrtia vigil Walker were sister species; this conclusion was not contradicted by a phylogenetic analysis of the morphological characters. Based on cytochrome b , the genetic distance between specimens of W. vigil from Europe and North America was sufficiently large to justify the recognition of more than one species. A new species, Wohlfahrtia monegrosensis , from northern Spain, was described, based on morphology and cytochrome b . A unique combination of external body characters of males or females were diagnostic for W. magnifica , the W. vigil group and Wohlfahrtia bella , but only the genitalia characters were diagnostic for all nine species studied.  相似文献

The house musk shrew (Suncus murinus), or suncus, is a unique experimental animal. We recently showed that this mammal is cold intolerant and hypothesized that its sensitivity to cold is caused by low thermogenic activity in brown adipose tissue (BAT). Thermogenesis in BAT is performed by a unique mitochondrial protein, uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). Interestingly, only eutherians possess UCP1, and some traits in the suncus resemble those in the Ucp1-ablated mouse, including cold intolerance, histology of BAT, and obesity resistance. In a previous study, we hypothesized that UCP1 may not be present in BAT of the suncus or may be dysfunctional. Therefore, we performed cDNA cloning of suncus Ucp1 and compared it to homologs from other species. The deduced amino acid sequence showed high similarity to other mammalian UCP1. Northern blot analysis revealed mRNA in BAT, as in other mammals. However, a difference in an amino acid residue was observed in an important residue for thermogenesis. Genomic sequence analysis showed that this difference existed in our two genetically distant laboratory colonies. These results suggest that cold intolerance in the suncus is derived from low thermogenic activity of UCP1 and may exist in wild house musk shrews.  相似文献

Molecular, chromosomal and morphometric analyses of wild-caught mice of subgenus Mus from the central plain of Thailand are presented. These specimens are distinct from all species previously described in the literature. This has led to the characterization of Mus fragilicauda sp. n., a new member of the set of closely related species encompassed by the subgenus . While this species may be considered as a sibling and sympatric species of the Asian M. cervicolor , M. fragilicauda sp. n. is phylogenetically closer to the M. musculus complex of species and to the other European species of Mus .  相似文献

Abstract. Fifty of the fifty-six species of the genus Apamea known from North America and three Palaearctic species were analysed for lock-and-key characters in their internal genitalia, mainly in the male vesica and the female bursa copulatrix. There were an average of 4.5 such characters per species, structurally corresponding in the two sexes. Anatomically they form a postcopulatory but prezygotic isolation mechanism. In some closely related species, the internal genitalia are very similar, but these species have a precopulatory isolation mechanism in the presence or absence of male abdominal coremata. Closely related species did not have more lock-and-key characters than unrelated species, which is taken to indicate absence of character displacement. The anatomical distribution of the lock-and-key characters was examined and the organs of eight species are illustrated.
The lock-and-key hypothesis has been abandoned by several earlier authors but mainly on consideration of external genitalia. In Apamea the invariable functional correspondence between sexes in the sperm transferring organs, and the overall species-specifity of characters but non-existence of interspecific differences under a precopulatory mechanism indicate that (a) lock-and-keys are functioning and (b) they act as isolation mechanisms. Alternative hypotheses of genitalic evolution are reviewed.  相似文献

Wing polymorphism and asymmetric male genitalia are intriguing morphological phenomena occurring in insects. Among Emesinae, or thread‐legged bugs, the tribe Metapterini Stål exhibits these two interesting morphological attributes. Nonetheless, evolutionary interpretations of these phenomena cannot be put forward because phylogenetic hypotheses for Emesinae are lacking. Thread‐legged bugs are easily recognized among assassin bugs due to their elongated and seemingly delicate body. The tribe Metapterini has 28 genera and approximately 280 described species. The only available phylogenetic hypothesis among Emesinae tribes was proposed by Wygodzinsky (1966), and it hypothesized Deliastini Villiers as the sister group of Metapterini, although this hypothesis has never been tested with cladistic approaches. Recent analyses using character sets of genitalia and prolegs suggest that Metapterini might not be monophyletic. In order to test these ideas, we compiled a morphological dataset of 138 characters that includes external morphological characters, detailed features of prolegs and genitalia of both sexes for Metapterini, which were analysed cladistically including 55 terminals, comprising 24 genera (85.7% of the generic diversity), 43 species of Metapterini and 12 outgroups. Metapterini was recovered as paraphyletic by the inclusion of Bergemesa Wygodzinsky, Palacus Dohrn and Stalemesa Wygodzinsky, all currently assigned to Deliastini. Gardena Dohrn (Emesini) was recovered as the sister group of Metapterini + Deliastini as suggested by Wygodzinsky (1966). Based on these results, we synonymize Deliastini syn. n. with Metapterini sensu n. and propose two new genera: Bacata Castro‐Huertas & Forero gen. n. , for three Andean species previously placed in Liaghinella Wygodzinsky, and Valkyriella Castro‐Huertas & Forero gen. n. for Ghilianella borgmeieri Wygodzinsky. Ancestral state reconstruction of wing polymorphism indicates that males and females were fully winged in the ancestor of Metapterini sensu n. with two independent evolutionary transitions to the apterous and brachypterous conditions. The analysis of the symmetry of the male genitalia shows an ancestor with symmetric male genitalia and two independent emergences of asymmetrical male genitalia in Metapterini.  相似文献

Specialization of adaptive devices can reflect the coevolution of closely interactive relationship between partners in mutualism. Glochidion eriocarpum and Epicephala eriocarpa have formed a strict species-specific mutualism over a long term of evolution. Based on field observation and the anatomical study of adult specimens, we clarified the morphological and biological characteristics of E. eriocarpa and performed morphological analyses of the specialized female genitalia for the first time. Epicephala eriocarpa had four generations per year. Adaptive specialization in the mutualism was expressed by morphological variations in the relative length of the ovipositor and the flower style. The mean length of the apophyses posteriores, which constituted 38% of E. eriocarpa body size, was unique among known Epicephala species. The variations among partners suggested that the flower style might have selected an optimal ovipositor length in its pollinator. This indicated that highly specialized structures resulted from mutual specificity and reciprocal adaptation among interacting partners in “one-to-one” mutualism. The evolutionary characteristics of pollinators might be more sensitive to outside stimulation than their partners and could express the process of adaptive evolution better. Moreover, our analyses help to further understand the evolutionary mechanism and driving force of cospeciation in obligate pollination mutualism.  相似文献

Understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms of morphological evolution is one of the greatest challenges in evolutionary biology. Sexually dimorphic traits, which often evolve at a high rate due to their involvement in mate choice and sexual selection, present unique opportunities for investigating changes in development over short evolutionary distances. Phylogenetic analysis is essential to provide a historical framework for comparative studies of development by establishing the order and polarity of morphological changes. In this report, we apply a new molecular phylogeny to reconstruct the evolution of male sexual characters in a group of species closely related to the model species Drosophila melanogaster. These highly variable traits include wing melanin patterns, the sex comb, and the structure of external genitalia and analia. We show that sexually dimorphic characters can diverge very rapidly among closely related species. More surprisingly, we also find a pervasive pattern of independent origin and secondary loss of male sexual traits in different evolutionary lineages.  相似文献

Triatomine classification is based on morphological characteristics. Studies have been conducted to improve their identification by observing many characteristics. However, there are problems of differentiating among highly interrelated species and new criteria are required. The purpose of this study was to determine the morphological differences in the external female genitalia of M. pallidipennis, M. longipennis, M. picturatus, M. bassolsae, M. mazzottii, and M. phyllosomus in order to distinguish among species using scanning electron microscopy. Observations were made of the dorsal, posterior, lateral, and ventral views of the female external genitalia for each species. In the six species we studied, relevant differences were observed in the dorsal view of the X segment, as well as the IX, VIII, and VII tergites. In the posterior and lateral view, the most visible differences were registered in the gonocoxite size of the segments VIII, IX, and X. Finally, in the ventral view of the VII sternite, differences among species were observed in the size of the inflection in the top and upper corner. Our results show that it was possible to differentiate among the triatominae species for each of the four views by using a scanning electron microscope to analyze morphological characteristics of the VII, VIII, IX, and X abdomen segments.  相似文献

The breadth of anatomical and functional diversity among amniote external genitalia has led to uncertainty about the evolutionary origins of the phallus. In several lineages, including the tuatara, Sphenodon punctatus, adults lack an intromittent phallus, raising the possibility that the amniote ancestor lacked external genitalia and reproduced using cloacal apposition. Accordingly, a phallus may have evolved multiple times in amniotes. However, similarities in development across amniote external genitalia suggest that the phallus may have a single evolutionary origin. To resolve the evolutionary history of amniote genitalia, we performed three-dimensional reconstruction of Victorian era tuatara embryos to look for embryological evidence of external genital initiation. Despite the absence of an intromittent phallus in adult tuataras, our observations show that tuatara embryos develop genital anlagen. This illustrates that there is a conserved developmental stage of external genital development among all amniotes and suggests a single evolutionary origin of amniote external genitalia.  相似文献

Northern blot analysis of mRNA prepared from the lung of Suncus murinus (suncus), which was classified as an ancestor of primates, revealed that the expression level of cytochrome P450 2A (CYP2A) mRNA was about 100-fold higher than in the lung from rats and mice. To confirm that the pulmonary CYP2A of the suncus had a catalytic activity, the metabolism of a specific substrate for CYP2A6, (+)-cis-3,5-dimethyl-2-(3-pyridyl) thiazolidin-4-one hydrochloride (SM-12502), was determined. The intrinsic clearance for SM-12502 S-oxidation by the suncus lung microsomes was calculated to be 99-fold higher than that by rat liver microsomes. The mutagen-producing activity of a 9,000 g supernatant fraction prepared from suncus lung was examined using 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) as a promutagen. The results showed that the suncus lung possessed 82-fold higher mutagen-producing activity than the rat lung, indicating that NNK was efficiently activated by the CYP2A isoform expressed in the suncus lung and that the suncus was a sensitive animal species to the genotoxicity of NNK contained in tobacco smoke.  相似文献
