We have studied the effect of intravenous injection of interleukin-1 (dose range: from 0.25 to 4.5 microg/kg of body weight) on plasma ACTH and cortisol levels in the marmoset, a primate paradygm of peripheral glucocorticoid resistance. Blood sampling were collected and body temperature recorded 0, 15, 30, 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 min after injection. Interleukin-1 stimulated secretion of ACTH in a dose-dependent fashion. Maximal secretion occurred 120 min after injection, and lasted up to 240 min. Plasma ACTH levels returned to baseline 300 min after interleukin-1 injection. Plasma cortisol levels were related to ACTH levels. Body temperature elevation, which occurred 10-15 min after injection was dose-dependent, and lasted 3 h. Results suggest that the pyrogenic effect of interleukin is associated, in the marmoset, with integrated activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In light of the proneness of marmosets to hyperimmune disorders, our data are consistent with the hypothesized central biological role of IL-1, as well as the pathophysiological relevance of the neuro-endocrine-immune cross-talk during the acute phase response.  相似文献

In contrast to numerous studies showing breeding seasonality for animals living in temperate zones, few have addressed the effect of annual environmental changes on hormones and behavior related to reproduction for animals living in tropical and equatorial regions. In order to expand information on other primates living near the equator, we used 13 adult common marmosets, eight males and five females living under natural climatic conditions in a colony located in North-Eastern Brazil. Blood samples were collected monthly from July 2002 to June 2004. Cortisol assays were performed by ELISA. Cortisol levels varied according to environmental temperature and rainfall but were not significantly affected by photoperiod. After separating out these environmental effects through an analysis of covariance for repeated measurements, a marginal significant difference in cortisol levels according to the seasons of the year was detected. A significant difference in cortisol levels between females and males was also observed. The results suggest that annual variation in cortisol in common marmosets is influenced by temperature and rainfall and might be associated with the mating season.  相似文献

Blood chemistry values were collected over a three-year period from at least 10 colony-born and 24 wild-born apparently normal common marmosets. BUN, SGOT, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglycerides, uric and glucose values were determined. A statistical comparison of baseline values was made between wild-born, colony-born, male and female marmosets. Also the same comparison was made between common marmosets and cotton-top tamarins, white lipped tamarins and human subjects.  相似文献

The physiological mechanisms of parental and alloparental care in cooperatively breeding nonhuman primate species such as the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) are poorly known. In this study, we examined prolactin and cortisol plasma levels of fathers and older offspring of both sexes, with and without previous experience in infant carrying, around parturition and during infant carrying. Blood samples were collected from fathers and older offspring and prolactin and cortisol were measured by RIA and EIA, respectively. Prolactin levels of both caretakers were not influenced by infant's birth, previous experience or proximity to parturition. However, prolactin levels increased in both caretakers while in physical contact with infants and also with the number of infants being carried in older offspring. These findings suggest that increased prolactin seems to be mainly due to physical effort rather than a physiological trigger of paternal and alloparental care in common marmosets. Cortisol levels were higher for experienced fathers shortly before parturition which could act to reinforce affiliative bonds between breeding males and females at this time or in the ability of males to detect the proximity of the parturition or both.  相似文献

The breeding records from 22Callithrix jacchus jacchus females aged 13–23 months were examined. It was evident that females aged more than 18 months when first paired bred sooner, as did females paired with sexually experienced males. A detailed behavioral investigation of nine newly formed pairs was carried out for 10 weeks. Males showed more following, sniffing, tail-raised presents, and affectional behavior than their mates, while females showed more soliciting. Only females gave the submissive vocalization (ngÄ). This shows that there is a degree of sexual dimorphism in the behavior of this monogamous monkey. Four of the nine pairs failed to conceive within 12 weeks of pairing;the females of these pairs behaved more submissively than successful breeders, showing more ngÄ and less bristling and sexual behavior. In all cases the four females were housed in close proximity to dominant relatives and this was considered to be a significant factor.  相似文献

Post-conflict (PC) affiliation has been demonstrated in a number of Old World monkeys and apes, but very little is known about the occurrence of the phenomenon in New World monkeys. This study examined 282 PC interactions after spontaneous conflicts around feeding time in two family groups (N = 12) of captive common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus jacchus. We found an overall corrected conciliatory tendency of 31%. Selective attraction was seen: former opponents met significantly more often in PCs than in matched controls (MCs) (27% and 16%, respectively). There was no difference in the occurrence of PC affiliation between dyads consisting of parent-offspring constellations compared to offspring-offspring constellations. PC affiliative behaviors were seen in the first three minutes following conflict termination, and consisted mainly of proximity, play invitations, and food transfer. Notably, former opponents remained within arm's reach after 17% of conflicts. Affiliation was more likely to follow after conflicts involving play issues. The functional importance of the PC affiliation in marmosets remains to be examined.  相似文献

Background Marmosets are susceptible to dengue virus (DENV) infection. However, blood parameter data and clinical signs of DENV-infected marmosets are limited. Methods Blood hematological and serum biochemical values were obtained from twelve DENV-inoculated and four mock-infected marmosets. Additionally, body temperature and activity level were determined. Results Five DENV-inoculated marmosets demonstrated thrombocytopenia, nine demonstrated leucopenia, and five demonstrated an increase in the levels of AST, ALT, LDH, and BUN. Additionally, seven DENV-inoculated marmosets demonstrated clinical signs including fever and decreases in activity. None of the four mock-inoculated marmosets demonstrated changes in either hematological or biochemical parameters. Conclusions Marmosets inoculated with DENV exhibited clinical signs and changes in hematological and biochemical parameters. The results suggest that blood parameter data and clinical signs could potentially be useful markers for understanding the progress of DENV infection in studies using marmosets.  相似文献

Previous studies have indicated that many, but not all, female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) housed with their natal families undergo social suppression of ovulation. In this study, we further characterized ovulatory activity in common marmoset daughters to determine the prevalence of social suppression of ovulation and to elucidate familial influences on daughters' ovarian activity. Blood samples were collected twice weekly from each of 46 daughters for 5–12 months, usually beginning when the daughters were 12 months of age. Plasma progesterone concentrations indicated that 46.3% of daughters in intact natal families ovulated at least once, with the age at first ovulation averaging 17.2 months; however, none of these daughters became pregnant. Daughters' ovulatory cycles showed several significant differences from those of older females housed with unrelated adults, including longer periods between successive luteal phases, shorter luteal phases, and lower peak and mean luteal-phase progesterone levels. Daughters were significantly more likely to ovulate in families in which the mother was experimentally prevented from sustaining pregnancies, and in families in which the father had been replaced by an unrelated adult male and when the daughter was approximately 10–11 months of age. Daughters in families containing an older sister never ovulated; in contrast, those with a female littermate were not less likely to ovulate than were other daughters, but had more sporadic ovarian cycles and significantly lower mean luteal-phase progesterone levels. These results confirm and extend previous findings that up to half of female common marmosets may ovulate while housed with the natal family but that virtually none sustain pregnancies, suggesting that suppression of ovulation is only one of several components of reproductive failure. Furthermore, these results demonstrate that daughters' likelihood of ovulating, as well as the endocrine profiles of their ovulatory cycles, can be modulated by numerous social influences within the family. Abdominal palpation of the uterus was carried out on 25 pregnant and 29 non-pregnant marmosets (Callithrix jacchus jacchus). 195 complete 24-hour urine specimens, collected between the first week of gestation and term (21 weeks), were tested with the Sub-Human Primate Tube (SHPT) test. No significant differences between the two methods in their ability to diagnose pregnancy were obtained between the first and 13th week of gestation. The SHPT test was seldom positive after the 13th week of pregnancy, whereas, with one exception, palpation always indicated pregnancy.  相似文献

Observations previously made in the field of inter-group mating raised questions concerning the fertility of daughters in family groups and about possible competition between mothers and daughters. To test whether daughters in captive family groups could become pregnant, daughters from four groups were placed with a strange male for a period of 30 min, twice a week for eight weeks. No changes were observed in the mother/daughter interactions during the time in which the daughters were allowed contact with the strange male. Two of the daughters showed signs of ovulation and the male only copulated with these animals. One daughter became pregnant, but it was aggression with her siblings rather than her mother which necessitated removing her from her family group.  相似文献

Agonistic behavior was observed in five captive groups of the monogamous monkey Callithrix jacchus jacchus, which normally produces twin offspring every 5 months. Fighting is first recorded when twins are aged 5–10 months. These “twin fights” determine differences in status between combatants that can be detected 5 months later. From what is known of the social behavior of the species, it is postulated that an individual’s twin is its most serious rival and that early fighting is advantageous because injury is minimal while the animal retains its milk dentition. In contrast to twin fights, aggression between same-sex juveniles and adults does not involve long fights and probably serves to reinforce preexisting differences in status. It often results in forcing a group member to the periphery, and therefore, its main function may be to drive mature, same-sexed individuals out of the group. Apart from the relationship between twins, status within the family group is age related and not normally determined by aggression.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of progesterone, cortisol, LH and prolactin were measured in dominant and subordinate female marmosets in 10 well-established peer groups. Subordinate females never ovulated, had a reduced LH response to LH-RH and showed no positive feedback LH surge after oestrogen administration. There was no evidence of elevated plasma cortisol levels or hyperprolactinaemia in subordinates and all showed a similar prolactin response to TRH in comparison with dominants. However, subordinates showed a reduced prolactin response to metoclopramide. These results clearly indicate that high circulating levels of cortisol or prolactin are not responsible for the inhibition of ovulation in female marmosets.  相似文献

Parental care in mammals is influenced by sensory stimuli from infants, such as sight and sound, and by changes in the hormone levels of caretakers. To determine the responsiveness of common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) adult males with and without previous experience in caretaking to newborn sensory cues, we exposed twelve males to infant vocalization recordings and assessed their hormonal and behavioral responses. Males were placed in the testing cage for 10 min under two conditions: (a) control condition (exposure to adult conspecific vocalization recordings), and (b) experimental condition (exposure to infant vocalization recordings). We recorded the frequency of approach towards the sound source, the time spent near it and locomotion frequency of males in the cage under both conditions. Blood samples were collected after each test for cortisol, measured by the enzyme immunoassay method. Infant vocalization affects the behavioral and hormonal responses of non-reproductive male common marmosets. All males approached and spent more time near the sound source and showed an increase in locomotion during infant vocalization exposure compared to the control condition. Successive exposure to infant vocalization increased the responsiveness in inexperienced males. Cortisol levels were significantly higher following infant vocalization exposure compared to the control condition. These findings support the assumption that sound stimuli from the newborn are critical in initiating and maintaining caretaker responsiveness and that cortisol seems to be important for alertness to sensory stimuli, modulating their motivation to interact with infants.  相似文献

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), a potent neuropeptide, is produced by the placenta of anthropoid primates. No other mammals, including prosimian primates, are known to produce placental CRH. In humans, placental CRH appears to play an important role in the progression of pregnancy to parturition. Maternal circulating CRH begins to rise early in pregnancy and increases until parturition. Gorillas and chimpanzees share this pattern of increasing maternal CRH during pregnancy with humans. In humans, chimpanzees, and gorillas, maternal CRH and estradiol concentrations are correlated, consistent with the hypothesis that CRH is involved in the biosynthetic pathway for placental estrogen production. In contrast, in baboons, maternal circulating CRH rises precipitously early in pregnancy and then declines, though CRH is detectable until birth. This research was designed to investigate the pattern of maternal circulating CRH in the common marmoset during pregnancy. Blood samples were taken across gestation from nine subjects over 11 pregnancies, and the plasma was assayed for CRH. The pattern of maternal circulating CRH in the common marmoset was similar to that of the baboon, with a rapid rise starting at about 50 days postconception and a peak at approximately 70 days postconception. By 110 days postconception, CRH concentration had plateaued at a significantly lower value. The peak and mean values for CRH were associated with fetal number (e.g., females gestating triplets had higher values than females gestating twins). Urinary estradiol showed no association with plasma CRH concentration. Marmosets appear to differ from the great apes in this regard, and to share a pattern of maternal CRH during pregnancy with the baboon, indicating that the baboon and marmoset pattern may be ancestral. The function of the early rapid rise of CRH in baboons and marmosets, and the significance of this difference between monkeys and apes, are not known.  相似文献

In socially-bonding species, separation from familiar attachment figures is widely known to stimulate a physiological and behavioral stress response. This study investigated the hormonal and vocal responses of adult common marmosets to separation from familiar group members and to 24 hr of cohabitation with an unfamiliar opposite-sex conspecific. All subjects were removed from their home cages and placed into a novel environment for 20 min. In one group, marmosets were exposed to an unfamiliar, opposite-sex partner in the novel environment and remained paired with this partner for the 24 hr test period. In three other groups, marmosets experienced the novel environment alone and subsequently were returned to their original social- or single-housing condition, or kept separate from their social groups for a 24 h period. Blood samples were collected the day before, and at 30 min, 90 min, and at 24 h after separation. Cortisol responses were differentially affected by the length of separation and the presence of unfamiliar conspecifics. Brief separation followed by the return to the social group had minimal effect on plasma cortisol levels. All marmosets produced high levels of separation calls in the novel environment, but there was no apparent relationship between calling and cortisol levels. The lack of a temporal relationship between the production of distress vocalizations and serum cortisol has previously been noted in squirrel monkey and rhesus monkey infant separation studies; the behavioral and physiological responses to separation appear to be similarly dissociated in the marmoset. Further, the characteristics of a separation environment can differentially affect the hormonal response by adult marmosets without differentially affecting their behavioral response.  相似文献

The role of the embryo in promoting increased plasma concentrations of immunoreactive inhibin after conception in the marmoset monkey was determined by flushing embryos from the uterus between days 5 and 9 after ovulation (implantation commences on days 11-12). Blood samples were taken from each animal (three times a week) after ovulation until the end of the luteal phase. Plasma inhibin concentrations were measured using a radioimmunoassay based on antisera against a synthetic fragment of the alpha-subunit of human inhibin. When embryos were flushed on days 5 and 6 (n = 6) after ovulation inhibin concentrations did not exceed 250 ng ml-1 for the duration of the luteal phase. In contrast when embryos were flushed on days 7 (n = 4), 8 (n = 4) and 9 (n = 3) maximum concentrations of inhibin always exceeded 250 ng ml-1, reaching > 400 ng ml-1 when embryos were flushed on days 8 and 9. Inhibin concentrations remained high for the duration of the luteal phase, which varied in length between 20 and 32 days. Significantly (P < 0.01) higher mean plasma concentrations of immunoreactive inhibin were first recorded on days 7-8 after ovulation in animals that had embryos flushed on days 7, 8 and 9 compared with concentrations in animals that had embryos flushed on days 5 and 6. Inhibin could not be detected in the medium of embryos cultured for up to 2 weeks.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Three wild groups of common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus jacchus,in north-east Brazil, of approximately similar size, had home ranges between 2.5 and 6.5 ha. But their core areas were similar in size between 1.0 and 1.5 ha, with a monthly area of heavy use between 1.1 and 1.6 ha. The groups were selective in the use of their home ranges, even though they were small: they used some areas heavily and others lightly. The core areas had higher densities of trees that produced gum exudates than did other parts of the home ranges. Our data suggest that a group of marmosets in this habitat may require a minimum of about 50 gum trees in its home range at a minimum density of about 50 trees/ha. In addition, the animals require suitable trees in which to sleep. We suggest that patches of forest with these desirable properties remain relatively fixed in size and location over the years and that individual animals are constantly in flux between them.  相似文献

Six long-term ovariectomized adult marmoset monkeys were treated at 0 h with 35 micrograms oestradiol benzoate s.c. to induce an LH surge. They were also treated with detirelix (an LHRH antagonist) at 0 h, 12 h and 24 h (Exp. 1), or at 0 h and 24 h (Exp. 2) at a dose of 300 micrograms/kg s.c., or received the detirelix vehicle alone at 0 h, 12 h and 24 h (Exp. 3). All animals received the three treatments, with at least 4 weeks between experiments. Blood samples were collected at 0 h and at 6-12 h intervals for 72 h after oestradiol for the determination of plasma LH by bioassay. In control animals, oestrogen treatment resulted in a decline in plasma LH from 30.0 +/- 5.8 at 0 h to 12.8 +/- 2.6 ng/ml at 6 h (negative feedback), followed by a positive feedback surge, reaching a maximum of 148.0 +/- 34.6 ng/ml at 24 h. Values then declined to pretreatment levels by 56 h. In contrast, antagonist-treated animals showed complete abolition of the expected increase at 24 h, the low levels of the negative feedback phase being maintained for 36-72 h. These results show that hypothalamic LHRH release is essential during the oestrogen-induced LH surge, and that a direct oestrogen-induced component at the pituitary level is not expressed in the absence of LHRH in the marmoset.  相似文献

No significant correlation exists between the amount of biologically active marmoset chorionic gonadotrophin (mCG) in urine and results obtained with an immunological pregnancy test. The pregnant marmoset excretes large amounts of oestrogenic steroids, which must be removed, to prevent the enhancement of the response of the bioassay for mCG. More than 99% of these unconjugated and conjugated urinary oestrogens can be removed by extraction with acetone and ether. mCG is excreted throughout pregnancy, maximum levels occurring between the 8th and 9th week of gestation. There is a considerable within- and between-animal variation in the amount of mCG excreted. However, the pattern of gonadotrophin excretion by the pregnant marmoset is similar to that of man and the apes but unlike that of baboons and macaques.  相似文献
