Is a mosaic embryo also a mosaic of communication compartments?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We have studied the pathways of cell communication in embryos of the mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis in which the developmental fate of a cell or a group of cells is known from cell lineage studies. We iontophoretically injected Lucifer Yellow CH and followed the spread of fluorescence between cells interconnected via gap junctions. In early stages all blastomeres appear to be dye-coupled, but later on communication is restricted within compartments. The pattern of cell communication corresponds with the development of compartments with specific cell fates. Dye-spread is limited by communication boundaries which completely or mostly prevent the passage of dye to adjacent compartments with different developmental fates. These boundaries appear progressively during development. Our results suggest that, during the development of Lymnaea, the progressive changes in the pattern of dye spread correspond with the progressive restrictions of the developmental fates of individual cells or groups of cells. We conclude that changes in the pattern of cell communication and in the appearance of communication compartments are not exclusive features of regulative embryos.  相似文献

It was shown many years ago that viruses can cause common cold but it is often forgotten that there were prolonged investigations and disagreements before this was agreed. It wa difficult to detect or propagate any virus in the laboratory and it has taken more than two decades of research to arrive at a reasonably complete list of the viruses that cause colds and related diseases. To do so, new techniques were developed by which these very specialized viruses can be grown and studied. Nevertheless unanswered questions remain on the relation between them and the diseases. This research has required finding answers to several different questions about the viruses and the diseases. The questions cannot all be answered in the same way for all virus infections, and recent research has shown that we can learn a great deal about certain viruses and diseases without answering all of the questions; for instance, the role of rotaviruses in diarrhoea was established though the viruses could not be effectively grown in the laboratory. In the light of these ideas I shall refer to the evidence that mental diseases may be due to virus infections and the recent finding that cerebrospinal fluid from such patients produced a cytopathic effect in tissue cultures that was apparently due to a virus-like agent.  相似文献

Microtropis macrocarpa C.Y. Cheng & T.C. Kao has been treated as a synonym of Microtropis macrophylla Merr. & Freeman in most taxonomic reports in China. According to our study, M. macrocarpa is an independent species endemic to Yunnan, China. Microtropis macrophylla and Microtropis pachyphylla Merr. & Freeman should be treated as synonyms of Microtropis longifolia Wall. ex Kurz. M. macrocarpa is also identified as a critically endangered species, CR B lab (i,ii,iii,v), based on the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. The foliar surface, anther and pollen structures were also observed with a scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

The conservation of rare plant species is an important aspect of global biodiversity protection, but in many cases these species and the reasons why they are rare are poorly understood. The perennial umbellifer Apium repens is generally regarded to be a rare species all over its European range. We hypothesized that its rarity might be caused by a restricted regeneration niche, that is, highly specific requirements for sexual regeneration, low seed dispersal potential and low endurance capacity of seeds in the ground. We conducted several experimental investigations on its germination ecology, hydrochorous dispersal potential and soil seed bank properties. Apium repens showed high germination success under a variety of abiotic conditions. Either light or cold-wet stratification was necessary to stimulate germination. Seeds were able to float for more than 50 days when protected from precipitation, and soil seed bank sampling revealed that at least some seeds of A. repens were contained in soil depths of up to 10 cm. Overall, our findings do not support the hypothesis that the rarity of A. repens is caused by highly specific requirements for its sexual regeneration. Nonetheless, its germination ecology should be considered when designing conservation measures for this endangered species.  相似文献

Current evidence suggests that plants in biodiversity hotspots suffer more from pollen limitation of reproduction than those in lower diversity regions, primarily due to the response of self‐incompatible species. Species in biodiversity hotspots may thus be more at risk of limited reproduction and subsequent population decline. Should these species have restricted ranges (i.e. be endemics to a certain region), pollen limitation within highly diverse regions may pose an important threat to global plant biodiversity. We further dissect the global pattern by exploring whether pollen limitation of range‐restricted (endemic) species is distinctive and/or relates differently to species diversity than that of widespread (non‐endemic) species. To provide a preliminary test of this prediction we conducted both cross‐species and comparative phylogenetic meta‐analyses to determine the effect of endemism on the magnitude of pollen limitation and its relationship with regional species richness. Our data set included 287 plant species belonging to 78 families distributed world‐wide. Our results revealed that endemism and self‐compatibility contribute to the global association between pollen limitation and species richness. Self‐incompatible species were more pollen limited than self‐compatible ones, and the PICs analysis indicated that transitions to endemism were associated with transitions to self‐compatibility. The relationship between pollen limitation and species richness was significant only for the self‐incompatible species, and was monotonically increasing in non‐endemic species but accelerating in the endemic species. Thus, self‐incompatible endemic species from biodiversity hotspots are at the greatest risk of pollination failure, a previously unknown aspect suggesting this group of species as a top priority for future development of conservation strategies. In contrast, reproduction of self‐compatible species appears to be unrelated to plant diversity, although we caution that current data do not account for the reproductive limitation due to the quality of pollen received. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these patterns requires further investigation into plant–plant pollinator mediated interactions and the dynamics of pollen transfer in communities differing in species diversity.  相似文献

The paradox recently raised by Wang and Yuan (Proteins 2000;38:165-175) in protein structural class prediction is actually a misinterpretation of the data reported in the literature. The Bayes decision rule, which was deemed by Wang and Yuan to be the most powerful method for predicting protein structural classes based on the amino acid composition, and applied by these investigators to derive the upper limit of prediction rate for structural classes, is actually completely the same as the component-coupled algorithm proposed by previous investigators (Chou et al., Proteins 1998;31:97-103). Owing to lack of a complete or near-complete training data set, the upper limit rate thus derived by these investigators might be both invalid and misleading. Clarification of these points will further stimulate investigation of this interesting area.  相似文献

Despite nearly annual blooms of the neurotoxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (Davis) G. Hansen and Moestrup in the Gulf of Mexico, defining the suite of biological traits that explain its proliferation has remained challenging. Studies have described K. brevis as a low-light-adapted species, incapable of sustaining growth under high light, which is at odds with observed surface aggregations sometimes within centimeters of the sea surface and also with short-term experiments showing photosynthetic machinery accommodating high irradiances. Here, growth and photophysiology of three K. brevis isolates were evaluated under a range of environmentally relevant irradiances (10–1500 μmol photons m−2 s−1) in the laboratory. No differences in growth–irradiance curves were observed among isolates; all sustained maximum growth rates at the highest irradiances examined, even in exposures as long as three weeks. The growth efficiency α of K. brevis under light-limiting conditions appeared mediocre among dinoflagellates, and poorer than that of other phytoplankton (e.g., diatoms, cyanobacteria), implying that K. brevis is not a low-light specialist. This finding substantially alters earlier parameterizations of K. brevis growth–irradiance curves. Therefore, a model was developed to contextualize how these new growth–irradiance curves might affect bottom growth rates. This model was subsequently applied to a case study comparing seasonal light forcing offshore of Pinellas County, FL, USA, with a single empirical value for light attenuation, and seasonal bottom water temperatures. Predictions suggested that light may limit bottom growth as close as 1 km from shore in winter, but would only begin limiting growth 20 km from shore in summer. Population maintenance (no net growth) was possible as far offshore as 90 km in summer and 68 km in winter. These ranges intercept areas thought to be important for bloom initiation.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the concept of 'originality of a species within a set' in order to indicate the average rarity of all the features belonging to this species. Using a phylogenetic tree of 70 species of New World terrestrial Carnivora, we suggest measuring the originality by a probability distribution. This maximizes the expected number of features shared by two species randomly drawn from the set. By using this new index, we take account of branch lengths whereas current indices of originality focus on tree topology. As a supplement to Nee and May's optimizing algorithm, we find that originality must be one of the criteria used in conservation planning.  相似文献

Abstract Establishing what are the underlying causes of species range limits is of fundamental interest in ecology. We followed the fate of individually mapped plants of three endemic New Zealand high‐alpine species of Myosotis, over a period of 9 years. The species provide contrasts in their geographical range and their demography. Myosotis oreophila Petrie is rare and extremely localized (c. 0.5 ha extent), Myosotis cheesemanii Petrie is regionally endemic, and Myosotis pulvinaris Hook. f. is more widespread. All three occur on the Dunstan Mountains, Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand within a 1‐km radius, and individual plants were followed in four permanent plots. The three species differed in their longevity and in population variability, with the most widespread species (M. pulvinaris) having the lowest survival (61% per year), the fewest old plants (only 3% of plants present in 1993 surviving until 2001), no increase in survival rates with age, and the most variability in total numbers across years. Both of the rare species, M. oreophila and M. cheesemanii, had higher survival (75% and 88%, respectively, per year) especially for older plants, many older plants (20% and 59%, respectively, of 1993 plants surviving until 2001), and lower variability in total numbers across years. These results are consistent with other studies showing that rare plant species tend to have higher inertia than more common congeners. The range limits of M. oreophila showed a high level of spatial constancy on a scale of metres over the 9 years, despite 80% turnover in plants during that time. The M. oreophila population showed lower mean densities of plants near to the population boundaries, identical age‐specific survival rates, but lower flowering probabilities, than the core of the population. We were unable to detect any abiotic differences between inside and outside the M. oreophila range in terms of topography, soil parent materials, microclimate or through manipulation of snow cover. Disturbance may be a factor affecting the distribution of M. cheesemanii but limiting factors for M. oreophila and M. pulvinaris are likely to be biotic (competition, seed limitation, dispersal capacity) and/or historic. Microsatellite primers were isolated from the microendemic and threatened species Coccoloba cereifera, a shrub known only from a small region in the Serra do Cipó, Brazil. Thirteen primer pairs amplifying perfect and imperfect microsatellite regions were tested in 40 individuals from the one known occurrence of the species. Number of alleles ranged from two to six and levels of observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.21 to 0.95. These markers will be useful for the analysis of questions concerning population genetic structure and will assist in providing information for future conservation management programmes.  相似文献

Sagina boydii F. B. White (Caryophyllaceae), Boyd's pearlwort, is an enigmatic taxon of unknown geographical origin which is only known in cultivation and is of uncertain taxonomic status. Morphological, cytological and geographical evidence suggests that it is most similar to S. procumbens L. and S. saginoides (L.) H. Karst., but it differs in its compact growth form. Genetically, AFLP analysis shows that it can be included as part of the variation in S. procumbens . In cultivation, it will grow true from seed. Other compact growth forms occur in S. procumbens but do not grow true from seed. As S. boydii is part of the variation in S. procumbens , is of uncertain geographical origin, is known only in cultivation, and grows true from seed, it is best treated as a new cultivar, Sagina procumbens 'Boydii'.
