Thirty‐four years (1972–2005) of water temperature data and extensive biological observations at Auke Creek, Alaska indicate a general warming trend that affected the native pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) population. Serial environmental records at nearby Auke Bay, Alaska over 46 years show trends of increasing air and sea surface temperatures. Trends of increased total precipitation and earlier date of ice out on nearby Auke Lake also occurred, but not at significant rates. Average water temperatures during the incubation of pink salmon in Auke Creek increased at a rate of 0.03 °C yr?1 over the 34‐year period. For the 1972–2005 broods, midpoints of fry migrations from Auke Creek ranged between April 2 and May 7, and there was a trend of earlier migration of pink salmon fry at a rate of ? 0.5 days yr?1. The migration timing of adult salmon into Auke Creek also showed a trend toward earlier timing. The earlier adult migration combined with warmer incubation temperatures are related to earlier migration of pink salmon fry. If the observed warming trend continues, Auke Creek may become unsuitable habitat for pink salmon. Given the trend for salmon fry to migrate earlier, a larger portion of the population may become mismatched with optimum environmental conditions during their early marine life history. If salmon adults continue to migrate into the creek earlier when water temperatures are commonly high, it will result in increased prespawning mortality.  相似文献

Hybridization between distinct populations and introgression of nonnative genes can erode fitness of native populations through outbreeding depression, either by producing a phenotype intermediate to that of both contributing genomes (and maladapted in either population's environment) or by disrupting distinct coadapted complexes of epistatic genes. In salmon, fitness-related traits such as homing ability or family-size distribution may be eroded. We investigated geographically separated pink salmon populations in repeated trials in independent broodyears (odd and even). Hybrids were made between female Auke Creek (Southeast Alaska) pink salmon and Pillar Creek (Kodiak Island, ~1 000 km away) males; hybrids and their offspring were compared to offspring of control crosses of the same females with Auke Creek males. Parentage assignment from microsatellite analysis was used to improve estimates of survival and straying and to examine variation of family size. Hybridization reduced return rates of adults (a proxy for survival at sea) in the F1 generation in the odd-year broodline (p < 0.0001) but not in the even-year broodline (p = 0.678). Hybridization reduced survival in both the odd- and even-broodyear F2 (p < 0.005 and p < 0.0001). Hybridization did not appear to impair homing ability; weekly surveys revealed similar straying rates (~2%) by both hybrid and control fish into nearby (~1 km) Waydelich Creek in both generations in both trials. Hybridization did not increase the index of variability (σ2/μ) in family size. Decreased survival in the hybrid F2 generation supports an epistatic model of outbreeding depression; nonepistatic effects may have contributed to reduced survival in the odd-broodyear F1 hybrid fish. Outbreeding depression in hybrids of geographically separated populations demonstrates that introgression of nonnative fish can erode fitness, and should be recognized as a potential detriment of both aquaculture and management practices.  相似文献

We analysed hatching times of hybrids between two spatially separated pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha populations. We repeated the experiment in independent even‐ and odd‐year broodlines. In 1996 and in 1997, we made F1 hybrids from Auke Creek (Juneau, Alaska) females and Pillar Creek (Kodiak, 1000 km away) males and F1 controls from Auke Creek parents. Families were reared and released at Auke Creek. F2 hybrids, controls, and backcrosses were made from F1 returns in 1998 and 1999. In 2001, we made F1 hybrids at Pillar Creek with native females and Auke Creek males. Pillar Creek ancestry prolonged development: At Auke Creek, hybrid families (half Pillar Creek ancestry) developed more slowly (more Accumulated Temperature Units between fertilization and hatch; P  < 0·0001) than did controls (only Auke Creek ancestry). At Pillar Creek, families with only Pillar Creek ancestry developed more slowly than did hybrids with half Auke Creek ancestry. Development times of backcrosses were intermediate between those of hybrids and controls. The variation in development times between Auke Creek and Pillar Creek pink salmon has a genetic component that probably results from local adaptation and illustrates a mechanism that can lead to outbreeding depression in intercrosses between salmon populations ( e.g. , occurring between wild and translocated stocks).  相似文献

The straying of hatchery salmon may harm wild salmon populations through a variety of ecological and genetic mechanisms. Surveys of pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), chum (O. keta) and sockeye (O. nerka) salmon in wild salmon spawning locations in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska since 1997 show a wide range of hatchery straying. The analysis of thermally marked otoliths collected from carcasses indicate that 0–98% of pink salmon, 0–63% of chum salmon and 0–93% of sockeye salmon in spawning areas are hatchery fish, producing an unknown number of hatchery-wild hybrids. Most spawning locations sampled (77%) had hatchery pink salmon from three or more hatcheries, and 51% had annual escapements consisting of more than 10% hatchery pink salmon during at least one of the years surveyed. An exponential decay model of the percentage of hatchery pink salmon strays with distance from hatcheries indicated that streams throughout PWS contain more than 10% hatchery pink salmon. The prevalence of hatchery pink salmon strays in streams increased throughout the spawning season, while the prevalence of hatchery chum salmon decreased. The level of hatchery salmon strays in many areas of PWS are beyond all proposed thresholds (2–10%), which confounds wild salmon escapement goals and may harm the productivity, genetic diversity and fitness of wild salmon in this region  相似文献

We evaluate the usefulness of gill rakers as a post-hatch developmental marker in salmon by tracking development in undisturbed and stressed yolk-bearing salmon embryos. Native pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) from Auke Creek, Juneau, Alaska and genetically stressed outbred hybrids between Auke Creek and Pillar Creek (Kodiak Island) salmon were incubated in ambient-temperature Auke Creek water. Environmentally stressed native embryos were reared in water that was 2 to 4 °C warmer than ambient. The sum of rakers on the first left and right branchial arches of natives reared at ambient temperatures averaged 23.20 (SD?±?1.64) per embryo when post-hatch sampling began. The subsequent increase in raker counts was linear and positively correlated with the accumulation of thermal units until counts reached maxima 223 days after fertilization, which coincided with the complete consumption of yolk reserves. The average maximum raker count was 39.55 (SD?±?1.76) per embryo, which is substantially fewer than the 60 rakers typically observed in adults. Neither raker development nor yolk consumption patterns were affected by hybridization. Elevated incubation temperatures accelerated raker formation and yolk consumption in native embryos, but the number of rakers associated with a given amount of yolk was the same regardless of temperature suggesting that changes in yolk consumption rate and raker development rate did not influence raker counts. These results indicate that rakers are easily observed and counted, grow in a predictable sequence, and are developmentally stable in the face of both genetic and environmental stress, thereby making them potentially reliable post-hatch developmental markers.  相似文献

Summary Serum specimens of two unrelated Japanese males had a new variant of the 2HS-glycoprotein phenotypes. They had unusual bands designated AHS 5. Family studies indicated that the new variant phenotypes were determined by a new allele, AHS * 5, in combination with a common allele AHS * 1 or AHS * 2, and that the new allele had an autosomal codominant inheritance with other AHS alleles. The frequency of the new 2HS-glycoprotein allele, AHS * 5, is 0.0005.We use the designation AHS to denote the 2HS-glycoprotein phenotype and allele in agreement with nomenclature guidelines (Shows et al. 1979)  相似文献

The efficiency of reproduction of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus) in the rivers of the northeastern Sakhalin coast is characterized based on long-term observations. The rivers of the northern, central, and southern parts differ in the type of their channel, faunistic composition of aquatic biota, and prevalent salmon species. The northern rivers have a plain type of channel with rather low spawning efficiency of salmons and relatively poor freshwater ichthyofauna. The central area houses the largest rivers (Tym’ and Nabil’ Rivers) running to the Nyiskii and Nabil’skii Gulfs; the rivers there have developed channels of a plain type, high diversity of resident ichthyofauna, low spawning efficiency of the pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, and high (in the past) abundance of the fall chum salmon O. keta. Characteristic of the southern rivers with their prevalently mountain–foothill type of channels are poor fish population and high spawning efficiency of the pink salmon. The population dynamics of the salmonids in the northeastern coast of Sakhalin is described. The total number of breeders entering the rivers of the northeastern coast that provides an efficient reproduction is estimated as 3.5?9.0 million individuals for the pink salmon and 0.04–0.60 million individuals for the chum salmon (fall race).  相似文献

Summary A new genetic polymorphism of a human serum glycoprotein, the inter--trypsin-inhibitor (ITI), has been demonstrated by population and family studies. Sera were examined after neuraminidase treatment by isoelectric focusing on agarose gels followed by immunoblotting or by immunfixation with specific ITI-antiserum. Using this method, three common ITI phenotypes 1, 1–2 and 2, as well as two further rare ITI types 1–3 and 2–3 were disclosed. Genetically, these phenotypes are controlled by three allelic genes that determine a total of six phenotypes. These alleles are designated ITI*1, ITI*2 and ITI*3. The homozygous form of the third allele ITI*3 has not been found, as yet. The frequencies of ITI were examined in two population samples from Southern Germany (n=248) and from Tyrol, Austria (n=124). The gene frequencies of the common alleles ITI*1 and ITI*2 were 0.575 and 0.417, respectively, in Southern Germany, and 0.577 and 0.423, respectively, in Tyrol, Austria. The third allele ITI*3 was found only in the sample from Southern Germany, thus far, and was calculated to be 0.008.  相似文献

Summary The polymorphism of inter-alpha-trypsin-inhibitor, ITI, was demonstrated by isoelectric focusing in agarose gels (pH 5–8) followed by protein blotting and immunoassay. Segregation in 239 families with 677 children is consistent with the formal hypothesis that there are two common codominant alleles, ITI*1, ITI*2, and one rare codominant allele, ITI*3, at an autosomal locus ITI. Allele frequencies were calculated as ITI*1=0.600, ITI*2=0.393, ITI*3=0.007. Linkage analysis with 36 markers is presented. Slightly positive lod scores were obtained for PGM3 (z=1,35, =0.10) and AK1 (z=1.34, =0.10).  相似文献

Synopsis RNA/DNA ratios were used to estimate recent somatic allocation of spawning arctic charr,Salvelinus alpinus, and pink salmon,Oncorhynchus gorbuscha. Smaller arctic charr morphs had lower ratios than larger morphs. Larger male pink salmon had lower ratios than smaller males. Thus recent somatic allocation (anabolic metabolic activity and growth) is coupled with cumulative lifetime growth in iteroparous arctic charr, but is uncoupled in semelparous pink salmon. These data suggest that somatic investment in these species is being differentially effected by the energetic costs of reproduction.  相似文献

Genetic polymorphism of complement component C8   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Summary Extensive genetic polymorphism of complement component C8 was demonstrated by isoelectric focusing of serum or plasma samples followed by immunoblotting procedures. Using these methods, we could detect both - (C81) and (C82) chain polymorphisms in the same gel. Two-dimensional (2D) electrophoresis of C8 immunoprecipitates was used to obtain further information of the C8 patterns. Evidence was obtained that the C81 polymorphism resides in the structural gene of the C8 chain. Both C8 systems show autosomal, chiefly codominant inheritance, and the distribution of phenotypes agrees with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Our findings suggest at least five different alleles in the C81 system; the gene frequencies of the two most common ones, C81 *A and C81 *B being 0.59 and 0.39, respectively. In C82 we found evidence for at least three codominant alleles, the gene frequencies for the two most common ones, C82 *B and C82 *A being 0.94 and 0.05, respectively. In addition, family studies disclosed the existence of a null allele, C82 * Q0.  相似文献

Summary A total of 168 autopsy liver extracts from Japanese individuals were examined for the glutathione S-transferase (GST) isozymes by means of starch gel electrophoresis. The gene frequencies of GST1*1, GST1*2, and GST1*0 in Japanese were 0.252, 0.057, and 0.691, respectively. GST1*3 was detected as a rare variant allele. The incidence of GST1 0 in 41 liver biopsy samples from patients suffering from various liver diseases was investigated using polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing. The GST1 0 phenotype was found more frequently in livers with hepatitis and carcinoma than in control livers. The isozymes coded by different GST loci were partially purified and characterized to study their biochemical properties. The apparent Km values with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) as substrate for the isozymes at the GST1, GST2, GST3, and GST4 loci were 604, 1345, 776 and 591 M, respectively.  相似文献

Resource subsidies across habitat boundaries can structure recipient communities and food webs. In the northern Pacific region, bears Ursus spp. foraging on anadromous salmon Oncorhynchus spp. provide a key link between marine and terrestrial ecosystems, with salmon density, fish size and watershed size as potential predictors of the magnitude of marine subsidy to terrestrial habitats. We use nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes to provide an assessment of the patterns of marine‐enrichment in riparian plants (11 species, 4 guilds) and litter invertebrates (4 guilds) sampled from 27 watersheds in coastal British Columbia, Canada. Watersheds occurred in three geographical regions (Vancouver Island, mainland midcoast and Haida Gwaii) and varied in size, and in biomass (kg m?1 of spawning length) and species of salmon (chum O. keta, pink O. gorbuscha and coho O. kisutch). δ15N values in all plant species and invertebrate guilds were positively predicted by total salmon biomass (kg m?1) and negatively predicted by watershed size. We observed replicated parallel slopes among plant species and invertebrate guilds across the gradient in salmon biomass, with differences in means hypothesized to be due to plant fractionation and animal trophic position. As such, we derived a watershed δ15N‐index averaged across guilds, and using an information theoretic approach we find that the biomass of chum salmon is a much stronger predictor of the δ15N‐index than either pink or coho salmon, or the sum biomass of all species. The top linear model contained chum biomass and watershed size. Chum salmon biomass independently predicted δ15N‐index variation in all three regions of British Columbia. Chum salmon are larger than pink or coho and provide an energetic reward for bears that facilitates carcass transfer, tissue selective foraging, and nutrient distribution by insect scavengers. Analyses of biodiversity and habitat data across many watersheds moves towards a long‐term goal in fisheries ecology to better integrate ecosystem values in salmon conservation.  相似文献

Results of study of sock-eyed salmon Oncorhynchus nerka from the Apuka River—the largest river of the northeast of Kamchatka—inflowing Olyutorskii Bay of the Bering Sea are presented. It is established that the school of the Apuka River is represented by the early-run sock-eyed salmon that spawns in Lake Vatyg-Gytkhyn located in the lower part of the basin and by individuals of the later run that spawn in the upper reaches of the river. Early-run sock-eyed salmon appears in the river with signs of spawning changes and a high value of gonadosomatic index (GSI). Late-run sock-eyed salmon migrates to the river without signs of spawning changes and with a relatively low GSI. The age composition of spawners of the early- and late-run sock-eyed salmon is different.  相似文献

Summary One hundred and ninety-six unrelated healthy individuals and 30 families with 75 offspring have been studied for the C81(-) polymorphism. The following allele frequencies were calculated: C81*A=0.5536; C81*B=0.4286; C81*A1=0.0178. Observed and expected phenotype frequencies were in a good agreement according to the Hardy Weinberg law. No exceptions from the mode of inheritance were found. In family W the segregation of the rare allele C81*A1 could be followed. Comparing the results of this study with previous data from Boston and Oslo, a combined technology including C8-dependent lysis and C8 structural variation is suggested for future investigations.  相似文献

Summary A Samoyed-speaking group of fishers, hunters, and deer breeders numbering 1500 in total has been investigated. Seven territorial subgroups were examined with respect to 15 genetic systems. The presence of A2, cde, CwDe, Kpa, AK2, pc, Gmfb, and Gmfnb genes or haplotypes in low or moderate frequencies was observed. An unexpected finding was a deleted Gm(-;n;gb) phenotype in three siblings.Significant local genetic heterogeneity was observed with regard to AB0, Rh, Tf, PGM1, 6-PGD, and Gm systems. The summed genic heterogeneity was found to be highly significant ( 132 2 =663.70, P< 0.001). Mean Fst was equal to 0.0228, reflecting variation among subpopulations dispersed in the forest-tundra area and living under conditions of partial isolation.  相似文献

Pink salmon introduced into the White Sea started to exploit as spawning grounds middle and upper reaches of the river 20 years after its appearance in the Indera River. As a result of this, the migration pathway of smolts and late smolts appeared in addition to early smolts. The intraspecies polymorphism of smolts is confirmed by differences of early and late smolts by body length and weight, migration dates, food spectrum, and indices of stomach fullness. The food spectra of late juveniles of pink salmon coincide with those of parr of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and of brown trout S. trutta. Greater abundance of late migrants of pink salmon may cause competition of these species for food.  相似文献

Summary Diversity as a measure of individual variation within a population is widely agreed to reflect the number of different types in the population, taking into account their frequencies. In contrast, differentiation measures variation between two or more populations, demes or subpopulations. As such, it is based on the relative frequencies of types within these subpopulations and, ideally, measures the average distance of subpopulations from their respective lumped remainders. This concept of subpopulation differentiation can be applied consistently to a single population by regarding each individual as a deme (subpopulation) of its own, and it results in a measure of population differentiation T which depends on the relative frequencies of the types and the population size. T corresponds to several indices of variation frequently applied in population genetics and ecology, and it verifies these indices as measures of differentiation rather than diversity. For any particular frequency distribution of types, the diversity is then shown to be the size of a hypothetical population in which each type is represented exactly once, i. e. for which T =1. Hence, the diversity of a population is its differentiation effective number of types. This uniquely specifies the link between the two concepts. Moreover, again corresponds to known measures of diversity applied in population genetics and ecology. While population differentiation can always be estimated from samples, the diversity of a population, particularly if it is large, may not be. In such cases, it is recommended that population differentiation is estimated and the corresponding sample diversity merely computed. Finally, a solution to the problem of measuring multi-locus diversities is provided.  相似文献
