The antioxidant activity and the oxidative stability of flax, sesame, silybum oils and seed blend oils with different ω-6/ω-3 fatty acid ratios have been investigated. The antioxidant content (AO) in crude oils and their reactivity towards peroxyl radicals were studied using the kinetic method based on oil addition to the model reaction of cumene oxidation. There were correlations between the ratio polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)/ω-9 and thermal stability (50°C); between the effect of γ-tocopherol content and oil resistance to oxidative changes during long-term storage at (10 ± 2)°C.  相似文献

Oils and fats are the most important renewable raw materials of the chemical industry. They make available fatty acids in such purity that they may be used for chemical conversions and for the synthesis of chemically pure compounds. Oleic acid (1) from “new sunflower,” linoleic acid (2) from soybean, linolenic acid (3) from linseed, erucic acid (4) from rape seed, and ricinoleic acid (5) from castor oil are most important for chemical transformations offering in addition to the carboxy group one or more C-C-double bonds. New plant oils containing fatty acids with new and interesting functionalities such as petroselinic acid (6) from Coriandrum sativum, calendic acid (7) from Calendula officinalis, α-eleostearic acid (8) from tung oil, santalbic acid (9) from Santalum album (Linn.), and vernolic acid (10) from Vernonia galamensis are becoming industrially available. The basic oleochemicals are free fatty acids, methyl esters, fatty alcohols, and fatty amines as well as glycerol as a by-product. Their interesting new industrial applications are the usage as environmentally friendly industrial fluids and lubricants, insulating fluid for electric utilities such as transformers and additive to asphalt. Modern methods of synthetic organic chemistry including enzymatic and microbial transformations were applied extensively to fatty compounds for the selective functionalization of the alkyl chain. Syntheses of long-chain diacids, ω-hydroxy fatty acids, and ω-unsaturated fatty acids as base chemicals derived from vegetable oils were developed. Interesting applications were opened by the epoxidation of C-C-double bonds giving the possibility of photochemically initiated cationic curing and access to polyetherpolyols. Enantiomerically pure fatty acids as part of the chiral pool of nature can be used for the synthesis of nonracemic building blocks.  相似文献

Essential fatty acid deficient male Sprague Dawley rats were fed for 7 days a fat-free semi-synthetic diet supplemented with 10% by weight of different oil supplements. The oil supplement was a mixture of olive, safflower and linseed oils prepared at different proportions so the dietary n-9/n-6/n-3 ratios were approximate 2/1/1, 1/2/1, 1/1/2, and 1/1/1. The fatty acid compositions of plasma and liver lipids were then examined. Our results show polyunsaturated n-6 and n-3 fatty acids were selectively incorporated into plasma and liver phospholipids, and also into plasma cholesteryl esters. A preferential incorporation of n-6 over n-3 fatty acids into plasma cholesteryl esters and phospholipids was also observed.  相似文献

Omega-3 fatty acids (ω3 FAs) have attracted attention because they have various health benefits for humans. Fish oils are currently major sources of ω3 FAs, but a sustainable supply of ω3 FAs based on fish oils is problematic because of the increasing demand. In this study, the production potential of a genetically engineered marine cyanobacterium, Synechococcus sp. strain NKBG 15041c, was examined as an alternative source of ω3 FAs. A change in fatty acid composition of this cyanobacterium was successfully induced by the expression of a heterologous Δ6-desaturase, and the transformants synthesized stearidonic acid, which the wild type cannot produce. As a result of optimization of culture conditions, maximal contents of stearidonic acid and total ω3 FAs reached 12.2 ± 2.4 and 118.1 ± 3.5 mg/g, respectively. The maximal ω3 FA productivity was 4.6 ± 0.7 mg/(L⋅day). These are the highest values of the contents of stearidonic acid and ω3 FAs in genetically engineered cyanobacteria reported thus far. Therefore, genetically engineered Synechococcus sp. strain NKBG 15041c may be a promising sustainable source of ω3 fatty acids.  相似文献

Simple alkyl (ethyl) esters of polyunsaturated fish oil fatty acids have been proposed as dietary supplements, but their relative efficiency of digestion and absorption have not been determined. Using stomach tubes, we gave rats menhaden or rapeseed oils, or the corresponding methyl and ethyl esters, and determined by chromatographic methods the lipid classes and molecular species recovered from the lumen of the jejunum during the first 1 to 2.5 h of digestion. Hydrolysis of menhaden oil resulted in a preferential retention of a high proportion of the polyunsaturated long chain acids in the sn-2-monoacylglycerols and in the residual triacyglycerols, while digestion of rapeseed oil led to a preferential release of free long chain monounsaturated fatty acids. In contrast, hydrolysis of the alkyl (methyl and ethyl) esters of the fatty acids of either menhaden or rapeseed oil resulted in a composition of free fatty acids which was much more representative of the original esters. It was therefore concluded that the differential lumenal liberation of the long chain and polyunsaturated (three or more double bonds) fatty acids from fish and rapeseed oil is largely due to their characteristic distribution between the primary and secondary positions in the glycerol molecule, and to a much lesser extent to a chain length discrimination by pancreatic lipase. This study also shows that the methyl and ethyl esters are hydrolyzed about 4 times more slowly than the corresponding triacylglycerols, which is sufficient to maintain a saturated micellar solution of fatty acids in the intestinal lumen during absorption.  相似文献

Lipids (characterized as oils, greases, fats and long-chain fatty acids) are important organic components of wastewater. Their amount, for example, in municipal wastewater is approximately 30–40% of the total chemical oxygen demand. The concern over the behavior of lipids in biological treatment systems has led to many studies, which have evaluated their removal, but still the exact behavior of lipids in these processes is not well understood. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge of how lipids/fatty acids affect both aerobic and anaerobic processes and specific methods that have been used in an attempt to enhance their removal from wastewater. Overall, the literature shows that lipids/fatty acids are readily removed by biological treatment methods, inhibitory to microbial growth as well as the cause of foaming, growth of filamentous bacteria and floc flotation.  相似文献

Sophorolipids production by the yeast Candia bombicola is most favourable when glucose is used as a carbon source in combination with a hydrophobic carbon source such as a common vegetable oil. Most vegetable oils are comprised of C16–C18 fatty acids, an ideal range for sophorolipid production. The use of oils with either shorter or longer fatty acids, such has coconut oil or meadowfoam oil, respectively, was evaluated. Such oils did not contribute to enhanced sophorolipid production when compared to cultures run on glucose as the sole carbon source. Moreover, a toxic effect of medium-chain fatty acids towards stationary C. bombicola cells was demonstrated.  相似文献

The present study examined the fatty acid composition of Microcystis aeruginosa grown in a batch culture and that of Microcystis-dominated plankton collected in an experimental enclosure in a shallow, eutrophic embayment of Lake Biwa (Akanoi Bay). In pure culture, we detected 16 : 0, 18 : 2ω6, 18 : 3ω3, 18 : 3ω6, and 18 : 4ω3 acids as major fatty acids of M. aeruginosa, with trace amounts of C20 polyunsaturated fatty acids. In both pure culture and the field enclosure, the ratio of total fatty acid weight to dry weight decreased with decreasing availability of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. The ω3/ω6 ratios of C18 polyunsaturated fatty acids [(18 : 3ω3 + 18 : 4ω3)/(18 : 2ω6 + 18 : 3ω6)] varied greatly (range, 2–5) in response to the changes in physical and chemical conditions for Microcystis growth. Most notably, the ω3/ω6 fatty acid ratios were significantly positively correlated with the growth rate of cells in a batch culture. We suggest that the fatty acid composition is a useful indicator of the physiological state of Microcystis in freshwater lakes. Received: March 2, 2001/ Accepted: December 19, 2001  相似文献

Thraustochytrids, the heterotrophic, marine, straminipilan protists, are now established candidates for commercial production of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), that is important in human health and aquaculture. Extensive screening of cultures from a variety of habitats has yielded strains that produce at least 50% of their biomass as lipids, and DHA comprising at least 25% of the total fatty acids, with a yield of at least 5 g L−1. Most of the lipids occur as triacylglycerols and a lesser amount as phospholipids. Numerous studies have been carried out on salinity, pH, temperature, and media optimization for DHA production. Commercial production is based on a fed batch method, using high C/N ratio that favors lipid accumulation. Schizochytrium DHA is now commercially available as nutritional supplements for adults and as feeds to enhance DHA levels in larvae of aquaculture animals. Thraustochytrids are emerging as a potential source of other PUFAs such as arachidonic acid and oils with a suite of PUFA profiles that can have specific uses. They are potential sources of asataxanthin and carotenoid pigments, as well as other lipids. Genes of the conventional fatty acid synthesis and the polyketide-like PUFA synthesis pathways of thraustochytrids are attracting attention for production of recombinant PUFA-containing plant oils. Future studies on the basic biology of these organisms, including biodiversity, environmental adaptations, and genome research are likely to point out directions for biotechnology explorations. Potential areas include enzymes, polysaccharides, and secondary metabolites.  相似文献

Abstract ω-Cyclohexyl undecanoic acid, an unusual fatty acid, was found in a bacterium isolated from a soil with added zinc. The ω-cyclohexyl fatty acid accounted for 46% of total fatty acids and was the most abundant fatty acid in bacteria grown in T medium. In addition, 12-methyl tetradecanoic acid (27%) and 14-methyl hexadecanoic acid (23%) were also quantitatively major fatty acids. The bacteria grew almost normally in the Zn-enriched medium, and their ω-cyclohexyl undecanoic acid content increased with Zn concentration. The results suggest that the ω-cyclohexyl fatty acid may be related to the Zn tolerance of this strain.  相似文献

Abstract The extractable ester-linked and the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) normal and hydroxy fatty acids of the methylotrophic bacteria Methylosinus trichosporium 0B3B, Methylobacterium organophilum XX, grown on methane and methanol, Mb. organophilum RG and Methylomonas sp. were analysed by capillary gas chromotography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Precise monounsaturated double bond position and geometry was determined by GC-MS analysis of the derivatized fatty acids. The three species were readily distinguished based on the extractable fatty acid and LPS hydroxy acid profiles. Type I and Type II methylotrophs can be separated based on the presence of 16-carbon and 18-carbon monoenoic fatty acids in the two groups of organisms, respectively. Relatively novel components, 18: 1ω8c, 18: 1ω8t, 18: 1ω7t and 18: 1ω6c were present in Ms. trichosporium , and 16: 1ω8c, 16: 1ω8t, 16: 1ω7t, 16: 1ω5c and 16: 1ω5t were detected in Methylomonas sp. These specific lipids may be used, together with other components, as signatures for these methylotrophic bacteria in manipulated laboratory and environmental samples.  相似文献

Summary Ligninase activity of Phanerochaete chrysosporium INA-12 was increased when vegetable oils emulsified with sorbitan polyoxyethylene monooleate (Tween 80) were added to growth medium. Maximal enzyme yield was 22.0 nkat·ml-1 in olive oil cultures after 4 days incubation. P. chrysosporium INA-12 was also able to utilize tall oil fatty acids for ligninase synthesis. An extracellular lipase activity was detected during the primary phase of growth in culture containing vegetable oils. On the other hand, ligninase production was 1.5-fold enhanced when olive oil cultures were supplemented with soybean asolectin as a phospholipid source. In cultures supplied with olive oil plus asolectin, P. chrysosporium INA-12 mycelium exhibited a preferential enrichment of oleic acid (C18:1), phosphatidylcholine (PC) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) as compared to lipid-free medium. PC and LPC enrichment was associated with an increased ratio of saturated versus unsaturated fatty acids of phospholipids.  相似文献

Polyunsaturated fatty acids play an important part in the structure and function of cellular membranes and are precursors of lipid mediators which play a key role in cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. Dietary sources of essential fatty acids are vegetable oils for either linoleic or alpha-linolenic acids, and sea fish oils for eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids. Because of the specificity of the pancreatic lipid hydrolases, triglyceride fatty acid distribution is an essential parameter in the digestibility of fats. The efficiency of the intestinal uptake depends on the hydrolysis and especially on their micellarization. n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid ethyl ester digestion is recognized to be impaired, but n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid triglyceride hydrolysis remains a controversial point, and to some authors explains differences observed between vegetable and fish oil absorption. So additional studies are required to investigate this intestinal step. In enterocytes, morphological and biochemical absorption processes involve reesterification of long-chain fatty acids and lipoprotein formation. At this level, specific affinity of I- and L-FABPc (cytosolic fatty acid binding proteins) to polyunsaturated fatty acids requires further investigation. A better understanding of the role of these FABPc might bring to light the esterification step, particularly the integration of polyunsaturated fatty acids into phospholipids. With reference to differences published between fish and vegetable oil absorption, longer-term absorption studies appear essential to some authors. Polyunsaturated fatty acid absorption is thought to be not very dissimilar to that of long-chain mono-unsaturated fatty acid absorption. However, several digestion and absorption specific steps are worth studying with reference to the crucial role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the organism, and for example adaptation of possible dietary supplements.  相似文献

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that regular consumption of foods rich in omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids has multiple positive health benefits. The fats and oils from marine fish contain high contents of these beneficial fatty acids but increased consumer demand has also increased strain on the ability of the world's fisheries to meet demand from wild capture. Many consumers are choosing fish oil supplements or are eating foods that have been complemented with fish oils instead of consuming fish directly. However, removing undesirable odors, flavors and contaminants is expensive. In contrast, oils derived from land plants such as soybean are inexpensive and contaminant free. Recent strides in plant molecular biology now allow the engineering of oilseeds for the production of novel fats and oils, including those synthesized by complex, multigene biosynthetic pathways such as the omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Given the potential benefits to the environment with regards to overfishing and the health prospects of increased consumption of these healthy fatty acids, producing these fatty acids in oilseeds is a desirable and worthy goal. In this review, we will describe the recent advances in this field along with some of the technical hurdles encountered thus far.  相似文献

We investigated whether polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which might be a useful complementary therapy among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), are able to modulate matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production in microglial cultures. MMPs are myelinotoxic factors. Primary cultures of rat microglia were treated with different doses of omega-3 (ω-3) PUFA or purified fish oil, containing a mixture of ω-3 and ω-6 PUFA, and simultaneously activated by exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Culture supernatants were subjected to zymography and Western blot analysis for the assessment of MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels. Increased amounts of MMP-9, but not of the constitutively expressed MMP-2, were observed in supernatants from LPS-treated microglia in comparison with non-treated control cells. The treatment with both ω-3 PUFA and fish oil dose-dependently inhibited the LPS-induced production of MMP-9. Our results suggest that a low fat diet supplemented with ω-3 PUFA may become recommended for the well being of MS patients under therapy.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies in Greenland Eskimos led to the hypothesis that marine oils rich in n-3 fatty acids (also referred to as omega (omega)-3 fatty acids) are hypolipidemic and ultimately antiatherogenic. Metabolically controlled trials in which large amounts of fish oil were fed to normal volunteers and hyperlipidemic patients showed that these fatty acids (FAs) are effective at lowering plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Although more recent trials using smaller, more practical doses of fish oil supplements have confirmed the hypotriglyceridemic effect, they have shown little effect on total cholesterol levels; hypertriglyceridemic patients have even experienced increases in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels of 10-20% while taking n-3 FA supplements. Discrepancies among fish oil studies regarding the effects of n-3 FAs on LDL-C levels may be understood by noting that, in the majority of studies reporting reductions in LDL-C levels, saturated fat intake was lowered when switching from the control diet to the fish oil diet. When fish oil is fed and saturated fat intake is constant, LDL-C levels either do not change or may increase. Levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol have been found to increase slightly (about 5-10%) with fish oil intake. Plasma apolipoprotein levels change in concert with their associated lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Although the decrease in triglyceride levels appears to result from an inhibition in hepatic triglyceride synthesis, the mechanisms leading to the increases in LDL and HDL have not been determined. Finally, fatty fish or linolenic acid may serve as alternative sources of long-chain n-3 FAs, but further studies will be needed to document their hypolipidemic and/or antiatherogenic effects.  相似文献

The production of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids from precursor molecules linoleic acid (LA; 18:2ω6) and α-linolenic acid (ALA; 18:3ω3) is catalysed by sequential desaturase and elongase reactions. We report the isolation of a front-end Δ6-desaturase gene from the microalgae Ostreococcus lucimarinus and two elongase genes, a Δ6-elongase and a Δ5-elongase, from the microalga Pyramimonas cordata. These enzymes efficiently convert their respective substrates when transformed in yeast (39–75% conversion for ω3 substrate fatty acids), and the Δ5-elongase in particular displays higher elongation efficiency (75% for conversion of eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5ω3) to docosapentaenoic acid (22:5ω3)) than previously reported genes. In addition, the Δ6-desaturase is homologous with acyl-CoA desaturases and shows a strong preference for the ω3 substrate ALA.  相似文献

Out of different soil samples from neutral environments 50 thermo-acidophilic bacilli were isolated. All 23 strains tested contain ω-cyclohexane fatty acids in the range of 15–91% of the total fatty acids. In this group six strains possess hopane containing lipids (hopanoids). In contrast Bacillus coagulans, sometimes described as thermoacidophilic, contains no ω-cyclohexane fatty acids as was shown in seven strains. Early seedling emergence can increase plant fitness under competition. Seed oil composition (the types and relative amounts of fatty acids in the oils) may play an important role in determining emergence timing and early growth rate in oilseeds. Saturated fatty acids provide more energy per carbon atom than unsaturated fatty acids but have substantially higher melting points (when chain length is held constant). This characteristic forms the basis of an adaptive hypothesis that lower melting point seeds (lower proportion of saturated fatty acids) should be favored under colder germination temperatures due to earlier germination and faster growth before photosynthesis, while at warmer germination temperatures, seeds with a higher amount of energy (higher proportion of saturated fatty acids) should be favored. To assess the effects of seed oil melting point on timing of seedling emergence and fitness, high‐ and low‐melting point lines from a recombinant inbred cross of Arabidopsis thaliana were competed in a fully factorial experiment at warm and cold temperatures with two different density treatments. Emergence timing between these lines was not significantly different at either temperature, which aligned with warm temperature predictions, but not cold temperature predictions. Under all conditions, plants competing against high‐melting point lines had lower fitness relative to those against low‐melting point lines, which matched expectations for undifferentiated emergence times.  相似文献
