Spatial organization of EEG power and coherence during memorization of dichotically presented lists of words were studied in patients with winter depression (N = 17) and control subjects (N = 22). In contrast to the control subjects, the depressed patients were characterized by the higher theta power in the right parietal and posterior temporal regions and the dominance of the alpha 2 in the left midfrontal area. The patients also differed in the lower theta 2 coherence in the left hemisphere and lower alpha 1 coherence in the right hemisphere. These effects showed different intrahemispheric distribution. The interhemispheric EEG coherence in the theta 2 range between the frontal areas and alpha 1 coherence between the left frontal and right posterior areas was lower in the patients than in the control subjects. Verbal-emotional interaction in depressions are discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to explore Neurofeedback (NFB) effects on EEG current sources in Learning Disabled (LD) children, and to corroborate its beneficial consequences on behavioral and cognitive performance. NFB was given in twenty 30-min sessions to 11 LD children to reduce their abnormally high theta/alpha ratios (Experimental Group). Another five LD children with the same characteristics received a placebo treatment (Control Group). In the Control Group no changes in behavior or EEG current source were observed. In the Experimental Group, immediately after treatment children showed behavioral and cognitive improvements, but current source analysis showed few modifications; however, 2 months after treatment many changes occurred: a decrease in current of frequencies within the theta band, mainly in left frontal and cingulate regions, and enhancement in current of frequencies within the alpha band, principally in the right temporal lobe and right frontal regions, and of frequencies within the beta band, mainly in left temporal, right frontal and cingulate cortex regions. In conclusion, NFB is a possibly efficacious treatment for LD children with an abnormally high theta/alpha ratio in any lead. The changes observed in EEG current sources may reflect the neurophysiological bases of the improvement that children experienced in their behavioral and cognitive activities.  相似文献

Influence of additional working memory load on emotional face recognition was studied in healthy adults. Visual set to emotional face expression was experimentally formed, and two types of additional task--visual-spatial or semantic--were embedded in the experiment. Additional task caused less plastic set, i.e., a slower set-shifting. This effect displayed itself in an increase of erroneous facial expression perceptions. The character of these erroneous perceptions (assimilative or contrast or visual illusions) depended on the type of the additional task. Pre-stimulus EEG coherence across experimental trials in theta (4-7), low alpha (8-10 Hz) and beta (14--20) bands was analysed. Data of low-alpha and beta-coherence supported the hypothesis that increased memory load caused less involvement of frontal lobes in selective attention mechanisms that are associated with set-forming. This results in a slower set-shifting. Increased memory load also led to a growth of theta-band coherence in the left hemisphere and its decrease in the right hemisphere. The account of theta-coherence decrease in the right hemisphere between prefrontal and temporal areas for a slower set-shifting is discussed.  相似文献

EEG power mapping was used to study gender differences in hemispheric functional organization during memorizing dichotically and monaurally presented verbal information. Right-handed students (12 men and 14 women) participated in experiments. The EEG was recorded from 16 electrodes placed at homologous sites of the left and right brain hemispheres. Task-related changes in the thetal power in men differentiated between monaural presentations to different ears, i.e., situations of oppositely directed attention. In women the thetal power reactivity (the difference between the band power logarithms under baseline conditions and in task interval) differentiated between dichotic and monaural presentations of words, i.e., situations with different memory loads. Gender differences were also found in the alpha frequency band. Power changes in the alpha 1 band in all memory tasks and power changes in the alpha 2 were more evident in the right hemisphere in men but in the left hemisphere in women. In contrast, in the posterior temporal lead the alpha 2 power reactivity in men was higher in the right hemisphere, whereas in women the lateral differences were absent. As compared to men, the alpha 2 desynchronization in women was also more pronounced in posterior regions of both hemispheres. There were no gender differences in efficacy of memorizing. It is suggested that different processing strategies rather than different behavioral performance may be responsible for the revealed specific spatiotemporal EEG patterns.  相似文献

A hemispheric interaction during verbal creative thinking was studied by the analysis of EEG coherence in the band of 4-30 Hz. 18 males and 21 females (right-handed university students) participaited in the experiments. Independently of gender, the performance of Remote Associates Task was accompanied by an increase in coherence in the theta1 and beta2 frequency bands as compared to the states of rest and the letter-fluency and simple associate's tasks. Successful search for original word associates as compared to generation of standard words was accompanied by a local increase in the interhemispheric coherence of the beta2 rhythm mostly in the parietotemporal cortex. In creative men, the increase in the hemispheric interaction efficient for a search for original words was focused in the frontal and temporal loci of the right hemisphere and in the left occipital locus, whereas in creative women the increase in coherence was observed in the left frontal and temporal regions. Creative men differed from non-creative ones by higher inter- and intrahemispheric coherence and were similar to women in the level of hemispheric interaction. The cortical distribution of foci of interhemispheric coherence reactivity indicates that the cortical organization of verbal functions depends on both sex and creativity of men and women.  相似文献

Complex EEG and stabilography investigation with separate and simultaneous performance of motor (voluntary postural control) and cognitive (calculation) tasks has been performed in 20 healthy subjects (22 +/- 0.7 yo.). Specific spatial and frequency reactive changes have been revealed during motor task performance. These included increase of coherence in alpha-band for long pair of channels in right hemisphere as well as in symmetric parietal-occipital regions in both hemispheres. Cognitive task performance has been accompanied by coherence increase for low bands (delta- and theta-) with higher activation in left hemisphere and frontal regions. In dual tasks where both components were performed worse comparing to control, performance led to reactive spatial and frequency changes of both--motor and cognitive--tasks, though these changes were less than during separate task performance. Decrease of coherence in alphal-band in frontal areas appeared as a zone of "conflict of interest - interferention". In dual tasks with better performance of each component comparing to control EEG coherence increased in each specific area as well as in areas of "conflict of interest".  相似文献

The 62-channel EEG was recorded while low (LA, n = 18) and high (HA, n = 18) trait-anxious subjects viewed sequentially presented neutral, threatening and pleasant IAPS stimuli. Event-related desynchronization (ERD) and synchronization (ERS) were studied in the delta, theta1, theta2, alpha1, alpha2, beta1, beta2, beta3, and gamma frequency bands. Between-group differences, related to stimulus emotionality, were linked to theta1 and theta2 bands. In the low theta at prefrontal sites in the test period of 100-700 ms after stimulus onset HA exhibited relative predominance of the left hemisphere in response to both threatening and pleasant stimuli, whereas LA yielded larger right than left hemisphere activity in response to all the three stimulus categories. In the upper theta band between group differences were associated with posterior cortical regions and the test period of 0-1000 ms after stimulus onset: HA exhibited the largest ERS to threatening, whereas LA prompted the largest ERS to pleasant stimuli. Finally, according to the ERD data, in the alpha1 band HA participants in comparison with LA revealed enhanced left hemisphere activation in response to all the stimulus categories. It is suggested that as it is indexed by theta-ERS relative predominance of the left hemisphere at prefrontal sites along with the largest bilateral activity of posterior cortical regions (i.e., enhanced higher order visual processing) to threatening stimuli could form the basis for general bias towards threatening information in HA at the very early stages of emotional processing.  相似文献

Analysis of EEG coherence performed in 60 healthy adult subjects revealed some changes in the spatial organization of cortical electrical activity produced by complication of the context of cognitive performance (increasing the working memory load). Changes in the degree of coherence of cortical potentials within the local areas were observed already at the stage of the "operative readiness" immediately after the instruction, i.e., representation of the cognitive task sequence in the explicit working memory. The observed changes were different in the anterior (decrease in the degree of coherence) and posterior (increase in coherence) areas of the cortex. Context-related increase in the local coherence was more pronounced in the temporal, parietal, and occipital areas of the left hemisphere than in the right hemisphere.  相似文献

Recent EEG studies have shown that implicit learning involving specific cortical circuits results in an enduring local trace manifested as local changes in spectral power. Here we used a well characterized visual sequence learning task and high density-(hd-)EEG recording to determine whether also declarative learning leaves a post-task, local change in the resting state oscillatory activity in the areas involved in the learning process. Thus, we recorded hd-EEG in normal subjects before, during and after the acquisition of the order of a fixed spatial target sequence (VSEQ) and during the presentation of targets in random order (VRAN). We first determined the temporal evolution of spectral changes during VSEQ and compared it to VRAN. We found significant differences in the alpha and theta bands in three main scalp regions, a right occipito-parietal (ROP), an anterior-frontal (AFr), and a right frontal (RFr) area. The changes in frontal theta power during VSEQ were positively correlated with the learning rate. Further, post-learning EEG recordings during resting state revealed a significant increase in alpha power in ROP relative to a pre-learning baseline. We conclude that declarative learning is associated with alpha and theta changes in frontal and posterior regions that occur during the task, and with an increase of alpha power in the occipito-parietal region after the task. These post-task changes may represent a trace of learning and a hallmark of use-dependent plasticity.  相似文献

Interhemispheric EEG asymmetry was studied in 26 male subjects aged 8-23 with different behavioral destructiveness levels. Subjects with higher destructiveness level in the state of rest had the focus of interhemispheric asymmetry in the temporal and frontal areas of the left hemisphere, whereas in subjects with lower destructiveness level the asymmetry focus was found in the same areas of the right hemisphere. Simulation of aggressive activity led to displacement of the asymmetry focus to the right hemisphere in both groups. However, in the group with higher destructiveness the changes in the focus were observed in the EEG theta band, which suggested the involvement of mainly stem oscillators of EEG activity in the destructive behavior. In the group with lower destructiveness changes were observed mainly in the alpha3 and beta1 bands, which indicated that cortical oscillators of EEG activity were involved in the control of the destructive behavior. The results suggest better perception and assessment of stimuli by subjects with lower aggressiveness and their choice of more adequate models of behavior.  相似文献

Comprehensive EEG and stabilography investigation with separate and simultaneous performance of motor (voluntary postural control) and cognitive (calculation) tasks has been performed in 20 healthy subjects (22 ± 0.7 years). Specific spatial and frequency reactive changes have been found during motor task performance. These included an increase in coherence in the EEG α band for distant derivation pairs in the right hemisphere, as well as in symmetric parietal-occipital areas in both hemispheres. Cognitive task performance was accompanied by an increase in coherence for the slow bands (δ and θ) with a higher activation in the left hemisphere and frontal cortex areas. In performing the dual task, one could observe activation of spatial and frequency changes including both motor and cognitive tasks. In the dual tasks where both components were performed worse as compared to the control, reactive reorganization of EEG coherence was less pronounced than during the performance of separate tasks. A decrease in the coherence of the α1 band in the frontal areas appeared as a zone of “conflict of interest” or interference. In dual tasks with better performance of each component as compared to the control, EEG coherence increased in each specific area, as well as in the areas of “conflict of interests.”  相似文献

Gender-related differences in EEG patterns during creative visual thinking were investigated in 10 men and 10 women. The spectral power density was analyzed in the range of 4-30 Hz. Gender differences in the hemispheric asymmetry of theta1-rhythm desynchronization were found: females demonstrated greater desynchronization in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere, whereas no asymmetry was revealed in males. Only in women numerous negative correlations between creativity indices and task-induced theta1 desynchronization were found.  相似文献

The 62-channel EEG was recorded while control non-alexithymic (n = 21) and alexithymic (n = 20) participants viewed sequentially presented neutral, pleasant and unpleasant pictures and subjectively rated them after each presentation. The event-related synchronization (ERS) to these stimuli was assessed in the theta-1 (4-6 Hr) and theta-2 (6-8 Hz) frequency bands. The obtained findings indicate that alexithymia influences perception of only emotional stimuli. In the upper theta over anterior cortical regions alexithymia vs control individuals in response to both pleasant and unpleasant stimuli manifested decreased left hemisphere ERS in the early test period of 0-200 ms along with enhanced ERS in response to negative vs positive and neutral stimuli in the right hemisphere at 200-600 ms after stimulus onset. The findings provide the first EEG evidence that alexithymia construct, associated with a cognitive deficit in initial evaluation of emotion, is indexed by disrupted early frontal synchronization in the upper theta band that can be best interpreted to reflect disregulation during appraisal of emotional stimuli.  相似文献

Nine patients with posttraumatic Korsakoff syndrome (KS) were examined before and after a rehabilitation course of feedback stability training (ST) using EEG, posturographic and clinical tests (with the FIM and Mayo Portland scales used for estimation). During 7 to 12 sessions, the patients tried to perform static and motor tasks. A group of 18 healthy subjects were examined to provide standard parameters. The results demonstrated a disturbed spatiotemporal EEG pattern in patients with KS before ST in the form of a reduced coherence for short derivation pairs (intrahemispheric, interhemispheric, and diagonal ones) in frontal and parietooccipital areas. Analysis of specific EEG rhythms demonstrated the maximum decrease in coherence in the α band (with the aforementioned regional specificity) and for long diagonal pairs (between the left frontal and right parietooccipital areas). The ST course was accompanied by KS regression (according to clinical scales and posturographic study); an original increase in EEG coherence, especially that of α waves, was recorded in the occipitoparietal and central frontal areas of the right hemisphere; a subsequent increase in coherence of the frontal areas in both hemispheres was observed. Late after the ST course, further positive changes were characteristic of the EEG spatiotemporal pattern. However, comparison with standard data suggested incomplete recovery of various coherence parameters: hypertrophied coherence in intrahemispheric pairs and still reduced values in interhemispheric derivations. This EEG pattern suggested incomplete KS regression, which was confirmed by clinical data.  相似文献

Event-related desynchronization (ERD) and synchronization (ERS) in response to neutral, positive and negative emotional IAPS stimuli were measured in narrow theta, alpha-1, alpha-2 and alpha-3 frequency bands in 22 healthy Ss. A high resolution 62-channel EEG was recorded while subjects viewed a sequence of pictures. The effects of valence discrimination related to hemispheric asymmetries are associated with increased theta and alpha-3 synchronization. Theta ERS revealed a significant valence by hemisphere interaction for anterior temporal leads in the time window of 100-700 ms after stimulus onset indicating a relatively greater right hemisphere ERS for negative and a left hemisphere ERS for positive stimuli in comparison to neutral those. In the alpha-3 band, negative stimuli induced a left hemisphere ERS increase (F7 site) in the time window of 800-1200 ms not observed for neutral and positive stimuli. The results obtained along with the earlier observations on EEG correlates of affective processing challenge the notion that effective anterior hemispheric asymmetries are reflected mainly in the wide alpha frequency band.  相似文献

Stability of the cognitive set to nonsense words in healthy adult subjects was compared in two experimental conditions: (1) subjects had only to recognize pseudowords/words; (2) in each trial after the pseudoword/word recognition, subjects had to press a button in response to a visual probe stimulus and only after this action to pronounce a recognized pseudoword/word. It was shown that complication of the cognitive performance in the second condition did not affect the set rigidity. However, the pattern of the cortical electric activity substantially changed: the EEG power in the theta frequency range and coherence function, in particular, interhemispheric, in the frontal cortical areas were higher in the second condition. The increase in coherence function in the frontal areas was most pronounced in the theta and alphal ranges. It was suggested that increase in activity of the frontal regions of the brain cortex facilitates shifts of visual sets under increasing load of the working memory.  相似文献

The functions of interhemispheric EEG coherence were analyzed in 12 healthy subjects with the right individual profile of motor and sensor asymmetry and 7 subjects with the left profile in 2 experimental conditions: the state of rest and photostimulation of the central visual field. It was shown that in the rest condition the right-handed subjects have the higher values of EEG coherence in the thetal band in symmetrical frontal and central areas than the left-handed. These differences decreased for the frontal and central areas during activation caused by photostimulation but increased in the theta 2 and betal bands in symmetrical temporal areas (the coherence in the left-handed being higher). The difference in the EEG coherence between conditions was greater for the frontal and central areas in the right-handed than in the left-handed, especially, for the theta 1 and theta 2 bands. These findings suggest that the left-handed subjects have a less developed hierarchy of subcortical control of the functional state shifts than the right-handed.  相似文献

The gender dependence of inter- and intrahemispheric interactions of neuronal assemblies during convergent (CTh) and divergent (DTh) thinking was studied on the basis of analysis of coherence (Coh) of cortical potentials in a broad frequency band. CTh was studied with a model of mental arithmetic, and DTh, with a heuristic task. Right-handed subjects were examined. The distinctive feature of CTh was a functional change in the patterns of EEG Coh in the θ band. Men were characterized by an increase in interactions between the centro-parieto-occipital areas of both hemispheres and between the frontal and temporooccipital regions of the right hemisphere, whereas a similar pattern of coherent connections was shifted to the left temporal area in women, suggesting a predominant use of verbal calculation strategies by women and visuospatial strategies by men. Regardless of the gender, DTh was associated with an increase in interhemispheric Coh and an increase in Coh in the right hemisphere. However, the successful performance of a task in men and women was determined by different degrees of hemispheric interaction: men successfully solved the problem under conditions of a closer interaction of both hemispheres, whereas women efficient in their performance showed a weaker interaction of homologous cortical areas as compared to noncreative subjects.__________Translated from Fiziologiya Cheloveka, Vol. 31, No. 3, 2005, pp. 39–49.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Razoumnikova.  相似文献

Brain electrical activity was recorded in 38 patients with typical and in 42 patients with atypical panic disorders, also in 30 normal controls. Compared to controls, patients both with typical and with atypical panic disorders differed significantly in reduced spectral power of the EEG alpha band in the right hemisphere. Moreover, in patients with typical panic disorders, the spectral power of the EEG beta1 band was increased in the frontal, temporal, central, and parietal areas of the right hemisphere. In patients with atypical panic disorders, the spectral power of the theta band was increased in the temporal areas of the right hemisphere. The changes in the EEG activity in patients with typical panic disorders are supposed to reflect an increase in activity of non-specific systems of the mesencephalic reticular formation, and the EEG changes in patients with atypical panic attacks may be associated with increased activity of the temporolimbic brain structures.  相似文献

Changes in face expression recognition and EEG synchronization arising from additional load on working memory were studied in healthy adults. Two types of additional task--semantic and visuospatial--were used to load working memory in an experiment with a visual set, formed to facial stimuli. During perception of new facial stimuli, both these types of additional task caused an increase of erroneous face expression recognitions in the form of assimilative illusions. Alpha-band (8-10 Hz) EEG synchronization analysis revealed that additional memory load causes a decrease of frontal attention system input in set-forming and set-shifting. As for theta-band (4-7 Hz) synchronization, it changed ambiguously at additional memory load--in right fronto-temporal region coherence function decreased; other coherence connections, especially intra-hemispheric and in the left hemisphere, increased. At issue is the crucial role of fronto-thalamic and cortico-hippocampal systems in plasticity of visual sets formed to facial expressions.  相似文献
