Aims

We estimate organic carbon (C): total nitrogen (N): total phosphorus (P) ratios in soils under Australia’s major native vegetation groups.

Methods

We use digital datasets for climate, soils, and vegetation created for the National Land and Water Resources Audit in 2001. Analysis-of-variance is used to investigate differences in nutrient ratios between ecosystems. Linear discriminant analysis and logistic regression are used to investigate the relative importance of climatic variables and soil nutrients in vegetation patterns.

Results

We find that the N:P and C:P ratios have a greater range of values than the C:N ratio, although major vegetation groups tend to show similar trends across all three ratios. Some apparently homeostatic groupings emerge: those with very low, low, medium, or high N:P and C:P. Tussock grasslands have very low soil N, N:P, and C:P, probably due to frequent burning. Eucalypt woodlands have low soil N:P and C:P ratios, although their total P level varies. Rainforests and Melaleuca forests have medium soil N:P and C:P ratios, although their total P level is different. Heathlands, tall open eucalypt forests, and shrublands occur on soils with low levels of total P, and high N:P and C:P ratios that reflect foliar nutrient ratios and recalcitrant litter.

Conclusions

Certain plant communities have typical soil nutrient stoichiometries but there is no single Redfield-like ratio. Vegetation patterns largely reflect soil moisture but for several plant communities, eucalypt communities in particular, soil N and P (or N:P) also play a significant role. Soil N:P and the presence of Proteaceae appear indicative of nutrient constraints in ecosystems.  相似文献

Background and aims

Intensive land use has led to degradation and abandonment of Portuguese oak woodlands, and subsequent shrub encroachment may have altered the spatial heterogeneity of soil C and N pools. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of shrub invasion on soil C and N dynamics in an oak woodland in Southern Portugal.

Methods

Soil was sampled beneath and outside scattered Quercus suber L. canopies, considering non-encroached areas and areas encroached by shrubs (Cistus ladanifer L. or Cistus salviifolius L.).

Results

The spatial heterogeneity of soil C and N contents was mainly associated with tree presence. Outside tree canopies, the labile C pools were larger (mainly beneath C. ladanifer) and C cycling was faster in encroached areas than in non-encroached areas. Net and gross N mineralization and urease and protease activities were also higher in encroached than in non-encroached areas; however, the metabolic quotient and the Cmicrobial/Corganic ratio were not significantly affected. Beneath the tree canopy, significant effects of encroachment included a small increase in soil labile C and the enzymatic activity beneath C. ladanifer.

Conclusions

The results indicate the potential capacity of shrub encroachment to accumulate soil organic C in the long term. The rate of soil C and N turnover promoted by shrub encroachment may depend on the Cistus species present.  相似文献

Background and aims

Plant physiological traits and their relation to soil N availability was investigated as regulators of the distribution of understory shrub species along a slope in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation in central Japan.

Methods

At the study site, previous studies demonstrated that both net and gross soil nitrification rates are high on the lower slope and there are dramatic declines in different sections of the slope gradient. We examined the distributions of understory plant species and their nitrate (NO 3 ? -N) use traits, and compared the results with the soil traits.

Results

Our results show that boundaries between different dominant understory species correspond to boundaries between different soil types. Leucosceptrum stellipilum occurs on soil with high net and gross nitrification rates. Hydrangea hirta is dominant on soil with high net and low gross nitrification rates. Pieris japonica occurs on soil with very low net and gross nitrification rates. Dominant understory species have species-specific physiological traits in their use of NO 3 ? -N. Pieris japonica lacks the capacity to use NO 3 ? -N as a N source, but other species do use NO 3 ? -N. Lindera triloba, whose distribution is unrelated to soil NO 3 ? -N availability, changes the extent to which it uses NO 3 ? -N in response to soil NO 3 ? -N availability.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that differences in the physiological capabilities and adaptabilities of plant species in using NO 3 ? -N as a N source regulate their distribution ranges. The identity of the major form of available soil N is therefore an environmental factor that influences plant distributions.  相似文献

Aims

The main objective was to describe the effects of plant litter on SOC and on soil microbial activity and structure in extensively managed grasslands in Central Germany that vary in biomass production and plant community composition.

Methods

The decomposition of shoot and root litter was studied in an incubation experiment. Labile C and N were isolated by hot water extraction (CHWE, NHWE), while functional groups of microbes were identified by PLFA analysis and microbial activity was measured using a set of soil exo-enzymes.

Results

The plant community composition, particulary legume species affected SOC dynamics and below-ground microbial processes, especially via roots. This was reflected in about 20% lower decomposition of root litter in low productivity grassland soil. The CHWE soil pool was found to be a key driver of the below-ground food web, controlling soil microbial processes.

Conclusions

Below-ground responses appear to be related to the presence of legume species, which affected the microbial communities, as well as the ratio between fungal and bacterial biomass and patterns of soil enzyme activity. Low productivity fungal-dominated grasslands with slow C turnover rates may play an important role in SOC accumulation. The approach used here is of particular importance, since associated biological and biochemical processes are fundamental to ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Background and aims

Exotic species, nitrogen (N) deposition, and grazing are major drivers of change in grasslands. However little is known about the interactive effects of these factors on below-ground microbial communities.

Methods

We simulated realistic N deposition increases with low-level fertilization and manipulated grazing with fencing in a split-plot experiment in California’s largest serpentine grassland. We also monitored grazing intensity using camera traps and measured total available N to assess grazing and nutrient enrichment effects on microbial extracellular enzyme activity (EEA), microbial N mineralization, and respiration rates in soil.

Results

Continuous measures of grazing intensity and N availability showed that increased grazing and N were correlated with increased microbial activity and were stronger predictors than the categorical grazing and fertilization measures. Exotic cover was also generally correlated with increased microbial activity resulting from exotic-driven nutrient cycling alterations. Seasonal effects, on abiotic factors and plant phenology, were also an important factor in EEA with lower activity occurring at peak plant biomass.

Conclusions

In combination with previous studies from this serpentine grassland, our results suggest that grazing intensity and soil N availability may affect the soil microbial community indirectly via effects on exotic cover and associated changes in nutrient cycling while grazing directly impacts soil community function.  相似文献

Background and aims

Changes in soil moisture availability seasonally and as a result of climatic variability would influence soil nitrogen (N) cycling in different land use systems. This study aimed to understand mechanisms of soil moisture availability on gross N transformation rates.

Methods

A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of soil moisture content (65 vs. 100% water holding capacity, WHC) on gross N transformation rates using the 15N tracing technique (calculated by the numerical model FLUAZ) in adjacent grassland and forest soils in central Alberta, Canada.

Results

Gross N mineralization and gross NH 4 + immobilization rates were not influenced by soil moisture content for both soils. Gross nitrification rates were greater at 100 than at 65% WHC only in the forest soil. Denitrification rates during the 9 days of incubation were 2.47 and 4.91 mg N kg-1 soil d-1 in the grassland and forest soils, respectively, at 100% WHC, but were not different from zero at 65% WHC. In the forest soil, both the ratio of gross nitrification to gross NH 4 + immobilization rates (N/IA) and cumulative N2O emission were lower in the 65 than in the 100% WHC treatment, while in the grassland soil, the N/IA ratio was similar between the two soil moisture content treatments but cumulative N2O emission was lower at 65% WHC.

Conclusions

The effect of soil moisture content on gross nitrification rates differ between forest and grassland soils and decreasing soil moisture content from 100 to 65% WHC reduced N2O emissions in both soils.  相似文献

Exotic plant invasions are a major driver of global environmental change that can significantly alter the availability of limiting nutrients such as nitrogen (N). Beginning with European colonization of California, native grasslands were replaced almost entirely by annual exotic grasses, many of which are now so ubiquitous that they are considered part of the regional flora (“naturalized”). A new wave of invasive plants, such as Aegilops triuncialis (Barb goatgrass) and Elymus caput-medusae (Medusahead), continue to spread throughout the state today. To determine whether these new-wave invasive plants alter soil N dynamics, we measured inorganic N pools, nitrification and denitrification potentials, and possible mediating factors such as microbial biomass and soil pH in experimental grasslands comprised of A. triuncialis and E. caput-medusae. We compared these measurements with those from experimental grasslands containing: (1) native annuals and perennials and (2) naturalized exotic annuals. We found that A. triuncialis and E. caput-medusae significantly reduced ion-exchange resin estimates of nitrate (NO3 ?) availability as well as nitrification and denitrification potentials compared to native communities. Active microbial biomass was also lower in invaded soils. In contrast, potential measurements of nitrification and denitrification were similar between invaded and naturalized communities. These results suggest that invasion by A. triuncialis and E. caput-medusae may significantly alter the capacity for soil microbial communities to nitrify or denitrify, and by extension alter soil N availability and rates of N transformations during invasion of remnant native-dominated sites.  相似文献

Aims

We assessed the temporal changes on microbial biomass in relation to changes in soil moisture, dissolved organic carbon and plant biomass during the summer season in a Mediterranean high-mountain grassland.

Methods

Temporal variations were tested by two-way ANOVA. The relationships among microbial biomass, plant biomass, soil water content, soil organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon and total soil nitrogen during the summer season were assessed by means of structural equation modeling.

Results

Microbial biomass did not show variation, while dissolved organic carbon and root biomass decreased throughout the summer. Aboveground plant biomass peaked in the middle of the summer, when soil water content was at its minimum. Soil water content directly and negatively affected soil microbial biomass, and positively affected dissolved organic carbon. Moreover soil microbial biomass and dissolved organic carbon were negatively related. Plant biomass effects on soil microbial biomass were driven by root biomass, which indirectly affected soil microbial biomass through effects on soil organic carbon and soil nitrogen.

Conclusions

The temporal dynamic of microbial biomass during the summer season appeared to differ from previous observations in temperate alpine communities, and indicated the drought resistance of the microbial community during the summer in Mediterranean high-mountain grasslands. During the dry period, microbial biomass may play an alternative role in soil carbon conservation.  相似文献

Ecological stoichiometry of N:P:Si in China’s grasslands   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Aims

Understanding ecological stoichiometry of plant nutrients and its relationship with vegetation succession in terrestrial ecosystems is largely limited to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Despite it being an important element for most grasses, silicon (Si) is usually ignored. We examined ecological stoichiometry of N:P:Si in grasslands.

Methods

We used leaf N, P and Si concentration, climate variables and phylogenic development, life forms, ecotypes, photosynthetic pathway to determine the relationship of N:P:Si ratio distribution with environmental conditions and the succession of grassland communities.

Results

The distribution of N, P and Si varied greatly among the seven types of China’s grasslands as influenced by environmental conditions (e.g. mean annual temperature – MAT) and plant species groups (e.g. phylogeny). Leaf N showed a significant positive correlation with P across all species, while N and P showed significant negative correlations with Si.

Conclusions

Si was less affected by grassland types than N and P. Environmental conditions such as MAT and MAP had a significant influence on the stoichiometry of N, P and Si in grasslands and that temperature had a greater influence than precipitation. The succession of grassland communities may respond to or be influenced by stoichiometry of N, P and Si.  相似文献

Background and aims

The objectives of this study were to examine the effect of direct inoculation of seeds with the rhizobacteria Pseudomonas sp. SB on the growth of tall fescue and phytodegradation efficiency in an oily-sludge-contaminated soil.

Methods

SB isolated from rhizosphere soil of tall fescue was evaluated for their plant-growth-promoting characters and ability to produce biosurfactant. A pot experiment was conducted to study the effect of inoculation of SB on phytoremediation.

Results

SB reduced the surface tension of culture media and produced indole acetic acid, siderophores, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase. Inoculation of SB increased shoot and root dry weights of tall fescue in oily-sludge-contaminated soil by 28 % and 19 %, respectively. Over 120 days, the content of total petroleum hydrocarbon in soil decreased by 33.9 %, 68.0 %, and 84.5 %, and of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by 32.9 %, 40.9 %, and 46.2 %, respectively, in the no-plant control, tall fescue, and tall fescue + SB treatments. Inoculation of SB also increased the activity and biodiversity of soil microbial communities in the planted treatments.

Conclusions

SB could produce biosurfactant and exhibited a number of characters of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria. Inoculation of SB to tall fescue led to more effective remediation of oily-sludge-contaminated soils.  相似文献

Background and aims

Natural abundance of the stable nitrogen (N) isotope 15N can elucidate shifts in plant N acquisition and ecosystem N cycling following disturbance events. This study examined the potential relationship between foliar δ15N and depth of plant N acquisition (surface organic vs. mineral soil) and nitrification as conifer stands develop following stand-replacing wildfire.

Methods

We measured foliar δ15N along an 18-site chronosequence of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) stands, 1 to 72 years in age post-wildfire. Foliar δ15N was compared to total δ15N of the organic (Oe + Oa) and mineral (0–15 cm) soil horizons, and organic horizon N mineralization and nitrification as functions of total mineralization.

Results

Foliar δ15N declined with stand age, yet wildfire effects were heterogeneous. Jack pine seedlings on burned, mineral soil patches in the youngest stand were significantly more enriched than those on unburned, organic patches (P?=?0.007). High foliar values in the youngest stands relative to mineral-horizon δ15N indicate that nitrification also likely contributed to seedling enrichment.

Conclusions

Our results suggest jack pine seedlings on burned patches obtain N from the mineral soil with potentially high nitrification rates, whereas seedlings on unburned patches and increasingly N-limited, mature jack pine acquire relatively more N from organic horizons.  相似文献

Aims

To study the relationship between vegetation development and changes in the soil microbial community during primary succession in a volcanic desert, we examined successional changes in microbial respiration, biomass, and community structure in a volcanic desert on Mount Fuji, Japan.

Methods

Soil samples were collected from six successional stages, including isolated island-like plant communities. We measured microbial respiration and performed phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis, and community-level physiological profile (CLPP) analysis using Biolog microplates.

Results

Microbial biomass (total PLFA content) increased during plant succession and was positively correlated with soil properties including soil water and soil organic matter (SOM) contents. The microbial respiration rate per unit biomass decreased during succession. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling based on the PLFA, DGGE, and CLPP analyses showed a substantial shift in microbial community structure as a result of initial colonization by the pioneer herb Polygonum cuspidatum and subsequent colonization by Larix kaempferi into central areas of island-like communities. These shifts in microbial community structure probably reflect differences in SOM quality.

Conclusions

Microbial succession in the volcanic desert of Mt. Fuji was initially strongly affected by colonization of the pioneer herbaceous plant (P. cuspidatum) associated with substantial changes in the soil environment. Subsequent changes in vegetation, including the invasion of shrubs such as L. kaempferi, also affected the microbial community structure.  相似文献

Aims

In the present study, we analysed the diversity of indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonising both the roots and rhizosphere soil of an annual herbaceous species, Bromus rubens, and a perennial herbaceous species, Brachypodium retusum, co-occurring in the same Mediterranean, semiarid degraded area. The intention was to study whether these two species promoted the diversity of AM fungi in their rhizospheres differently and to ascertain whether the AMF community harboured by an annual plant species differed from that harboured by a perennial species when both grew in the same place.

Methods

The AMF large subunit ribosomal RNA genes (LSU) were subjected to nested PCR, cloning, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis.

Results

Twenty AMF sequence types belonging to Glomus group A, Glomus group B and Diversispora were identified. The two plant species differed in the AMF community composition in their roots, B. rubens showing a higher diversity of AMF than B. retusum. However the composition of the AMF communities associated with the two rhizosphere soils was similar.

Conclusions

These results suggest that the management of these Mediterranean, semiarid degraded areas should include the promotion of annual herbaceous plant communities in order to maintain the sustainability and productivity of these ecosystems.  相似文献

Background and aims

Previous studies have demonstrated positive net primary production effects with increased nitrogen (N) and water availability in Inner Mongolian semi-arid grasslands. However, the responses of soil carbon (C) and N concentrations and soil enzyme activities as indicators of impacts of long-term N (urea) and water addition are still unclear. We tested the effect of 7 years of a N and water addition experiment on soil C, N, and specific soil-bound enzymes in a semi-arid grassland of Inner Mongolia.

Methods

We determined concentrations of soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (TN) in both the 0–10 and 10–20 cm soil layers. Concentrations of labile carbon (LC) and inorganic nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium), and soil pH were measured. Additionally, soil dehydrogenase (DHA), β-glucosidase (BG) and acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterase (PME) enzyme activities were determined in the 0–10 cm soil layer.

Results

SOC concentration in the 0–10 cm soil layer showed no response to N addition or N plus water addition, but increased with water addition alone by 0.3–15.7 %. N addition significantly increased nitrate by 46.0–138.4 % and ammonium by 19.0–73.3 % in the 0–10 cm soil layer, whereas water addition did not affect them. The activities of DHA and alkaline PME enzymes, as well as soil pH, in the 0–10 cm layer decreased with N addition, however water addition alone caused these enzyme activities to increase. Unlike the surface soil (0–10 cm), the lower soil layer (10–20 cm), was responsive to N and water addition in that SOC and TN concentrations decreased with N addition and increased with water addition.

Conclusions

The accumulation of SOC and TN in N and water addition plots may be caused by the input of plant biomass exceeding SOC decomposition. Decrease in microbial activity, derived from decreased DHA and alkaline PME activities might result from suppression effects of lower pH and decreased microbial N supply. Water availability is proved to be more important than N availability for soil C and N accumulation in this semi-arid grassland.  相似文献

Background and aims

Fine root decomposition contributes significantly to element cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, studies on root decomposition rates and on the factors that potentially influence them are fewer than those on leaf litter decomposition. To study the effects of region and land use intensity on fine root decomposition, we established a large scale study in three German regions with different climate regimes and soil properties. Methods In 150 forest and 150 grassland sites we deployed litterbags (100 μm mesh size) with standardized litter consisting of fine roots from European beech in forests and from a lowland mesophilous hay meadow in grasslands. In the central study region, we compared decomposition rates of this standardized litter with root litter collected on-site to separate the effect of litter quality from environmental factors.

Results

Standardized herbaceous roots in grassland soils decomposed on average significantly faster (24?±?6 % mass loss after 12 months, mean ± SD) than beech roots in forest soils (12?±?4 %; p?Conclusions Grasslands, which have higher fine root biomass and root turnover compared to forests, also have higher rates of root decomposition. Our results further show that at the regional scale fine root decomposition is influenced by environmental variables such as soil moisture, soil temperature and soil nutrient content. Additional variation is explained by root litter quality.  相似文献

Aims

It has been reported that root exudates of Sorghum bicolor can inhibit nitrification in a bioassay using Nitrosomonas, and methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate (MHPP) was identified as one of the nitrification inhibiting compounds. Therefore, we have investigated the effects of this compound on nitrogen dynamic, potential nitrification activity and on soil microorganisms.

Methods

We conducted soil incubation experiments using synthetic MHPP to evaluate its effect on changes in inorganic soil nitrogen pools, on nitrification activity and on abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea. Addition of MHPP at two concentrations equivalent to 70 and 350 μg C g?1 soil was compared to glucose as a carbon source and to the commercially available nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD).

Results

Soil amended with the high dose of MHPP and with DCD showed reduced nitrate content and low nitrification activity after 3 and 7 days of incubation. This was mirrored by a 70 % reduction in potential nitrification activity compared to a nitrogen-only control. None of the incubation treatments affected non-target microbial counts as estimated by 16S rRNA gene copy numbers, however, the high dose of MHPP significantly reduced the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea.

Conclusions

These findings suggest that MHPP is capable of suppressing nitrification in soil, possibly by reducing the population size and activity of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The tall fern (Athyrium distentifolium Tausch ex Opiz) forms large stands in many deforested sites in Central European mountains. In the present study, we want to demonstrate that the effect of ferns on the leaching of nutrients is the same at low and high nitrogen (N) deposition.

Methods

Free-tension lysimeters with growing ferns, and some with bare forest soil were installed in field conditions in 2006. We monitored the chemistry of lysimetric water at ambient and enhanced (plus 50?kg?N ha-1) levels of N deposition during five growing seasons.

Results

Results indicate that during the growing seasons ferns slightly decreased of acidity and conductivity of lysimetric water and substantially reduced losses of base cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+). The concentration of leached base cations was three to seven times higher from bare forest soil than from lysimeters with ferns. Higher N accumulation in fern biomass coincides with lower contents of leached N in lysimetric water.

Conclusions

The reduced losses of base cations were due to the ability of Athyrium to absorb and accumulate nutrients in large amounts in living biomass and in dead undecomposed plant matter and particularly in below-ground biomass.  相似文献

Background and aims

Drought events, agricultural practices and plant communities influence microbial and soil abiotic parameters which can feedback to fodder production. This study aimed to determine which soil legacies influence plant biomass production and nutritional quality, and its resistance and recovery to extreme weather events.

Methods

In a greenhouse experiment, soil legacy effects on Lolium perenne were examined, first under optimal conditions, and subsequently during and after drought. We used subalpine grassland soils previously cultivated for two years with grass communities of distinct functional composition, and subjected to combinations of climatic stress and simulated management.

Results

The soil legacy of climatic stress increased biomass production of Lolium perenne and its resistance and recovery to a new drought. This beneficial effect resulted from higher nutrient availability in soils previously exposed to climatic stresses due to lower competitive abilities and resistance of microbial communities to a new drought. This negative effect on microbial communities was strongest in soils from previously cut and fertilized grasslands or dominated by conservative grasses.

Conclusion

In subalpine grasslands more frequent climatic stresses could benefit fodder production in the short term, but threaten ecosystem functioning and the maintenance of traditional agricultural practices in the long term.

Background and Aims

Global change will likely express itself in southwestern United States arid lands through changes in amounts and timing of precipitation in response to elevated CO2 concentrations. In addition, increased nitrogen (N) deposition may occur due to increased urban development. This study addressed the effects of water and N availability on C allocation in arid land soil-plant systems.

Methods

Columns filled with Mojave Desert topsoil containing Larrea tridentata seedlings with two treatment levels each of N and soil moisture were labeled by exposure to 13C-enriched CO2.

Results

Increased soil moisture increased plant biomass, total 13C uptake, 13C levels in leaves, soil organic matter, and soil respiration, decreased relative C allocation to stems but increased allocation to soil organic matter. Increased soil N availability increased N uptake but decreased C allocation to soil respiration presumably due to decreased substrate supply for microbes. There was no detectable label in carbonate C, suggesting that this pool does not significantly contribute to ecosystem C fluxes.

Conclusions

Our study indicates that increased water availability causes increased C uptake with increased C allocation to soil organic matter in Larrea tridentata-dominated communities while increased N deposition will have a minimal impact on C sequestration.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Fenced enclosures have become an important method for re-establishing degraded grassland on the Tibetan plateau, and examination of soil seed banks may provide useful insights to understanding the effects and mechanisms of fencing enclosure on the restoration.

Methods

An investigation was conducted into the effects of enclosure for 3 years on the soil seed banks of degraded natural and sown grasslands at eight study sites. Species composition, soil seed bank density and the relationships with above-ground vegetation were analysed based on 4800 soil core samples and counting of seeds extracted from soil samples.

Results

After 3 years of fencing enclosure, soil seed banks differed between the different communities across the study sites. Species numbers and seed density in soil seed banks decreased from natural grassland to sown grassland, with most seeds occurring in the upper 5 cm soil layer. In these alpine grasslands, relatively few species produced high numbers of seeds, although their occurrence across the eight study sites was variable. Total vegetation cover increased with enclosure due to the colonization capacity of the vegetation rather than soil seed banks.

Conclusions

This study provided evidence that soil seed banks do not play an important role in the restoration of degraded alpine grassland when using fencing enclosures. Further studies conducted over longer periods are needed to address this subject.  相似文献
