Key message

Our study provides evidence that neither elevated CO 2 nor elevated O 3 alters the positive asymmetric competition for light and the symmetric competition for water among beech and spruce individuals grown in monoculture. We conclude that the mechanism of competition (i.e. symmetric/asymmetric) above (e.g shading or overtopping effect) and belowground (e.g. non-preemption or foraging) rather than abiotic treatments such as elevated CO 2 , O 3 and CO 2 /O 3 regimes, plays a dominant role for ensuring competitive success among tree saplings.

Abstract

Despite numerous studies conducted on plant responses to increasing CO2 and O3 concentrations, there is still a gap in understanding on how these gasses would affect the mode of competition (e.g., the ability by which larger and smaller plants capture resources) at the individual level of intra-specific beech and spruce saplings. Using empirical data and simulations from the plant-growth model PLATHO, we analyzed underlying mechanisms of competition and extrapolated effects beyond the time span of the experiment. We hypothesized that among juvenile beech and spruce trees planted in monoculture, +CO2 would diminish the positive asymmetric competition for light. Conversely, +O3 would enhance this outcome. In addition, we hypothesized that the symmetric mode of competition belowground for water would remain unchanged, irrespective of +CO2 and/or +O3 treatments. Our results showed that +CO2 and/or +O3 treatments did not alter the mode of competition aboveground for light. Conversely, we accepted our hypothesis that the mode of competition for water would remain unchanged under both treatments. Overall, we conclude that neither +CO2 nor +O3 alters the positive asymmetric competition for light and the symmetric competition for water among beech and spruce individuals grown in monoculture. We further conclude that competitive mechanism above (e.g., shading or overtopping effect) and belowground (e.g., non-preemption or foraging) rather than abiotic treatments, such as elevated CO2, O3 and CO2/O3 regimes, plays a dominant role for ensuring competitive success among tree saplings.  相似文献

Aims

We examine how root system demography and morphology are affected by air warming and multiple, simultaneous climate change drivers.

Methods

Using minirhizotrons, we studied root growth, morphology, median longevity, risk of mortality and standing root pool in the upper soil horizon of a temperate grassland ecosystem for 3 years. Grassland monoliths were subjected to four climate treatments in a replicated additive design: control (C); elevated temperature (T); combined T and summer precipitation reduction (TD); combined TD and elevated atmospheric CO2 (TDCO2).

Results

Air warming (C vs T) and the combined climate change treatment (C vs TDCO2) had a positive effect on root growth rate and standing root pool. However, root responses to climate treatment varied depending on diameter size class. For fine roots (≤ 0.1 mm), new root length and mortality increased under warming but decreased in response to elevated CO2 (TD vs TDCO2); for coarse roots (> 0.2 mm), length and mortality increased under both elevated CO2 and combined climate change drivers.

Conclusions

Our data suggest that the standing roots pool in our grassland system may increase under future climatic conditions. Contrasted behaviour of fine and coarse roots may correspond to differential root activity of these extreme diameter classes in future climate.  相似文献

Aims

We investigated whether changes in respiratory C fluxes, soil CO2 efflux, or root exudate quantity or quality explained differences in growth rates between closely related clones of Pinus taeda (L.).

Methods

A factorial design with two clones, fertilized and control treatments, and four sequential harvests was installed in a greenhouse for 121 days.

Results

The two clones did show significant differences in respiratory C fluxes, soil CO2 efflux, and root exudation quantity and quality. While the clones also differed in growth rates, the C fluxes assessed in this paper did not explain how seedlings were able to allocate more C to stem growth in the months following fertilizer application. Changes in root exudation were not consistent with reduced heterotrophic soil CO2 efflux, which does not appear to be a plant-mediated process.

Conclusions

These results indicate that if single genotypes are deployed over large land areas in plantations, dramatic differences between clonal plant-soil interactions may require consideration in ecosystem C budgets. Further, the range of belowground fluxes observed implies that genotype-specific C allocation may make some clones better able to exploit a given resource environment than others.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Projected changes in the atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and tropospheric O3 over the next 50?years are of significant concern due to the linkages in the cycling of carbon and water in forested ecosystems. Responses of tree roots to elevated CO2 (eCO2) and O3 (eO3) have been characterized primarily by studies of relatively shallow roots, yet deeper roots often play a disproportionately large role in water acquisition relative to their biomass. We undertook the present study to determine if there were significant root responses to eCO2 and eO3 below the maximum soil depths typically studied.

Methods

In the current study, we characterized small root biomass and morphometric responses to eCO2 and eO3 at the Aspen-FACE Experiment in Rhinelander, Wisconsin down to a depth of one meter.

Results

Elevated CO2 caused relatively undifferentiated growth stimulation. Elevated O3 stimulated root growth in the AA community at depth, while in the AB community there was a reduction in root growth in the shallow soil layer that was reversed in the deeper layers.

Conclusions

Root responses below depths typically studied were qualitatively similar than those within shallower soils for eCO2, but were sometimes compensatory for eO3.  相似文献

Background and aims

Accurate predictions of nutrient acquisition by plant roots and mycorrhizas are critical in modelling plant responses to climate change.

Methods

We conducted a field experiment with the aim to investigate root nutrient uptake in a future climate and studied root production by ingrowth cores, mycorrhizal colonization, and fine root N and P uptake by root assay of Deschampsia flexuosa and Calluna vulgaris.

Results

Net root growth increased under elevated CO2, warming and drought, with additive effects among the factors. Arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization increased in response to elevated CO2, while ericoid mycorrhizal colonization was unchanged. The uptake of N and P was not increased proportionally with root growth after 5 years of treatment.

Conclusions

While aboveground biomass was unchanged, the root growth was increased under elevated CO2. The results suggest that plant production may be limited by N (but not P) when exposed to elevated CO2. The species-specific response to the treatments suggests different sensitivity to global change factors, which could result in changed plant competitive interactions and belowground nutrient pool sizes in response to future climate change.  相似文献

Background and aims

The effects of tillage and N fertilization on CO2 and CH4 emissions are a cause for concern worldwide. This paper quantifies these effects in a Mediterranean dryland area.

Methods

CO2 and CH4 fluxes were measured in two field experiments. A long-term experiment compared two types of tillage (NT, no-tillage, and CT, conventional intensive tillage) and three N fertilization rates (0, 60 and 120 kg N ha?1). A short-term experiment compared NT and CT, three N fertilization doses (0, 75 and 150 kg N ha?1) and two types of fertilizer (mineral N and organic N with pig slurry). Aboveground and root biomass C inputs, soil organic carbon stocks and grain yield were also quantified.

Results

The NT treatment showed a greater mean CO2 flux than the CT treatment in both experiments. In the long-term experiment CH4 oxidation was greater under NT, whereas in the short-term experiment it was greater under CT. The fertilization treatments also affected CO2 emissions in the short-term experiment, with the greatest fluxes when 75 and 150 kg organic N ha?1 was applied. Overall, the amount of CO2 emitted ranged between 0.47 and 6.0 kg CO2?equivalent kg grain?1. NT lowered yield-scaled emissions in both experiments, but these treatment effects were largely driven by an increase in grain yield.

Conclusions

In dryland Mediterranean agroecosystems the combination of NT and medium rates of either mineral or organic N fertilization can be an appropriate strategy for optimizing CO2 and CH4 emissions and grain yield.  相似文献

Aims

It is unclear how changing atmospheric conditions, including rising carbon dioxide concentration, influence interactions between above and below-ground systems and if intraspecific variation exists in this response.

Methods

We assessed interactive effects of atmospheric CO2 concentration, above-ground herbivory, and plant genotype on root traits and mycorrhizal associations. Plants from five families of Asclepias syriaca, a perennial forb, were grown under ambient and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Foliar herbivory by either lepidopteran caterpillars or phloem-feeding aphids was imposed. Mycorrhizal colonization, below-ground biomass, root biomass, and secondary defensive chemistry in roots were quantified.

Results

We observed substantial genetic variation among A. syriaca families in their mycorrhizal colonization levels in response to elevated CO2 and herbivory treatments. Elevated CO2 treatment increased root biomass in all genetic families, whereas foliar herbivory tended to decrease root biomass. Root cardenolide concentration and composition varied greatly among plant families, and elevated CO2 treatment increased root cardenolides in two of the five plant families. Moreover, herbivores differentially affected the composition of cardenolides expressed below ground.

Conclusions

Increased atmospheric CO2 has the potential to influence interactions among plants, herbivores and mycorrhizal fungi and intraspecific variation suggests that such interactions can evolve.  相似文献

Aims

To assess the effects of atmospheric N deposition on the C budget of an alpine meadow ecosystem on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, it is necessary to explore the responses of soil-atmosphere carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange to N addition.

Methods

Based on a multi-form, low-level N addition experiment, soil CO2 effluxes were monitored weekly using the static chamber and gas chromatograph technique. Soil variables and aboveground biomass were measured monthly to examine the key driving factors of soil CO2 efflux.

Results

The results showed that low-level N input tended to decrease soil moisture, whereas medium-level N input maintained soil moisture. Three-year N additions slightly increased soil inorganic N pools, especially the soil NH 4 + -N pool. N applications significantly increased aboveground biomass and soil CO2 efflux; moreover, this effect was more significant from NH 4 + -N than from NO 3 ? -N fertilizer. In addition, the soil CO2 efflux was mainly driven by soil temperature, followed by aboveground biomass and NH 4 + -N pool.

Conclusions

These results suggest that chronic atmospheric N deposition will stimulate soil CO2 efflux in the alpine meadow on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau by increasing available N content and promoting plant growth.  相似文献

Aims

In view of the projected increase in global air temperature and CO2 concentration, the effects of climatic changes on biomass production, CO2 fluxes and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization in newly established grassland communities were investigated. We hypothesized that above- and below-ground biomass, gross primary productivity (GPP), AMF root colonization and nutrient acquisition would increase in response to the future climate conditions. Furthermore, we expected that increased below-ground C allocation would enhance soil respiration (Rsoil).

Methods

Grassland communities were grown either at ambient temperatures with 375?ppm CO2 (Amb) or at ambient temperatures +3°C with 620?ppm CO2 (T+CO2).

Results

Total biomass production and GPP were stimulated under T+CO2. Above-ground biomass was increased under T+CO2 while belowground biomass was similar under both climates. The significant increase in root colonization intensity under T+CO2, and therefore the better contact between roots and AMF, probably determined the higher above-ground P and N content. Rsoil was not significantly affected by the future climate conditions, only showing a tendency to increase under future climate at the end of the season.

Conclusions

Newly established grasslands benefited from the exposure to elevated CO2 and temperature in terms of total biomass production; higher root AMF colonization may partly provide the nutrients required to sustain this growth response.  相似文献

Background and aims

Roots and mycorrhizas play an important role in not only plant nutrient acquisition, but also ecosystem nutrient cycling.

Methods

A field experiment was undertaken in which the role of arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) in the growth and nutrient acquisition of tomato plants was investigated. A mycorrhiza defective mutant of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) (named rmc) and its mycorrhizal wild type progenitor (named 76R) were used to control for the formation of AM. The role of roots and AM in soil N cycling was studied by injecting a 15N-labelled nitrate solution into surface soil at different distances from the 76R and rmc genotypes of tomato, or in plant free soil. The impacts of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal root systems on soil greenhouse gas (CO2 and 14+15N2O and 15N2O) emissions, relative to root free soils, were also studied.

Results

The formation of AM significantly enhanced plant growth and nutrient acquisition, including interception of recently applied NO 3 ? . Whereas roots caused a small but significant decrease in 15N2O emissions from soils at 23?h after labeling, compared to the root-free treatment, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) had little effect on N2O emissions. In contrast soil CO2 emissions were higher in plots containing mycorrhizal root systems, where root biomass was also greater.

Conclusions

Taken together, these data indicate that roots and AMF have an important role to play in plant nutrient acquisition and ecosystem N cycling.  相似文献

Aims

This study examined the effect of elevated CO2 on plant growth, root morphology and Cd accumulation in S. alfredii, and assessed the possibility of using elevated CO2 as fertilizer to enhance phytoremediation efficiency of Cd-contaminated soil by S. alfredii.

Methods

Both soil pot culture and hydroponic experiments were carried out to characterize plant biomass, root morphological parameters, and cadmium uptake in S. alfredii grown under ambient (350 μL L?1) or elevated (800 μL L?1) CO2.

Results

Elevated CO2 prompted the growth of S. alfredii, shoot and root biomass were increased by 24.6–36.7% and 35.0–52.1%, respectively, as compared with plants grown in ambient CO2. After 10 days growth in medium containing 50 μM Cd under elevated CO2, the development of lateral roots and root hairs were stimulated, additionally, root length, surface area, root volume and tip number were increased significantly, especially for the finest diameter roots. The total Cd uptake per pot was significantly greater under elevated CO2 than under ambient CO2. After 60 d growth, Cd phytoextraction efficiency was increased significantly in the elevated CO2 treatment.

Conclusions

Results suggested that the use of elevated CO2 may be a useful way to improve phytoremediation efficiency of Cd-contaminated soil by S. alfredii.  相似文献

Aims

The partitioning of the total soil CO2 efflux into its two main components: respiration from roots (and root-associated organisms) and microbial respiration (by means of soil organic matter (SOM) and litter decomposition), is a major need in soil carbon dynamics studies in order to understand if a soil is a net sink or source of carbon.

Methods

The heterotrophic component of the CO2 efflux was estimated for 11 forest sites as the ratio between the carbon stocks of different SOM pools and previously published (Δ14C derived) turnover times. The autotrophic component, including root and root-associated respiration, was calculated by subtracting the heterotrophic component from total soil chamber measured CO2 efflux.

Results

Results suggested that, on average, 50.4 % of total soil CO2 efflux was derived from the respiration of the living roots, 42.4 % from decomposition of the litter layers and less than 10 % from decomposition of belowground SOM.

Conclusions

The Δ14C method proved to be an efficient tool by which to partition soil CO2 efflux and quantify the contribution of the different components of soil respiration. However the average calculated heterotrophic respiration was statistically lower compared with two previous studies dealing with soil CO2 efflux partitioning (one performed in the same study area; the other a meta-analysis of soil respiration partitioning). These differences were probably due to the heterogeneity of the SOM fraction and to a sub-optimal choice of the litter sampling period.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Understanding crop responses to increasing atmospheric CO2 requires knowledge of how their root systems grow, proliferate and function. The effect of elevated CO2 on the growth and proliferation of wheat root system (Triticum aestivum L.), was examined.

Methods

Two pairs of sister lines of wheat contrasting in vigour (CV97 and CV207) and tillering (7750N and 7750PF) were grown in rhizo-boxes under ambient (380 μl L?1) and elevated CO2 (700 μl L?1), and the root growth and proliferation mapped.

Results

Elevated CO2 effects on shoot and root biomass were observed in the lines contrasting for vigour, but not in the lines contrasting for tillering. Root biomass was reduced by 67 % in the high vigour line CV97, reducing total plant biomass by 26 % compared to the low vigour line, CV207. This was due to a reduction in root length down the 1 m soil profile and root proliferation in the top 0.2 m layer. The reduction in root biomass was not compensated by an increase in shoot biomass.

Conclusions

The reduction in root biomass under elevated CO2 in the vigour line CV97 can be explained through its inability to increase the sink strength due to the failure to increase tiller number to which the plant presumably responded by increasing losses of the newly assimilated carbon by respiration.  相似文献

Aims

Soil respiration in forest plantations can be greatly affected by management practices such as irrigation. In northwest China, soil water is usually a limiting factor for the development of forest plantations. This study aims to examine the effects of irrigation intensity on soil respiration from three poplar clone plantations in this arid area.

Methods

The experiment included three poplar clones subjected to three irrigation intensities (without, low and high). Soil respiration was measured using a Li-6400-09 chamber during the growing season in 2007.

Results

Mean soil respiration rates were 2.92, 4.74 and 3.49 μmol m?2 s?1 for control, low and high irrigation treatments, respectively. Soil respiration decreased once soil water content was below a lower (14.8 %) or above an upper (26.2 %) threshold. When soil water content ranged from 14.8 % to 26.2 %, soil respiration increased and correlated with soil temperature. Fine root also played a role in the significant differences in soil CO2 efflux among the three treatments. Furthermore, the three poplar hybrid clones responded differently to irrigation regarding fine root production and soil CO2 efflux.

Conclusions

Irrigation intensity had a strong impact on soil respiration of the three poplar clone plantations, which was mainly because fine root biomass and microbial activities were greatly influenced by soil water conditions. Our results suggest that irrigation management is a main factor controlling soil carbon dynamics in forest plantation in arid regions.  相似文献

Introduction

The rising atmospheric CO2 level is continuously driving the dissolution of more CO2 into the oceans, and some emission scenarios project that the surface waters may reach 1000 μatm by the end of the century. It is not known if fish can detect moderately elevated CO2 levels, and if they avoid areas with high CO2. If so, avoidance behaviour to water with high CO2 could affect movement patterns and migrations of fish in the future. It is also being increasingly recognized that fish behaviour can be altered by exposure to CO2. Therefore this study investigated how long-term exposure to elevated pCO2 affects predator avoidance and CO2 avoidance in juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The fish were exposed to control water or CO2-enriched water (1000 μatm) for six weeks before being subjected to tests of behaviour.

Results

Despite long term exposure to elevated pCO2 the cod still strongly avoided the smell of a predator. These data are surprising because several coral reef fish have demonstrated reversal of olfactory responses after CO2 exposure, turning avoidance of predator cues into preference for predator cues. Fish from both treatment groups also demonstrated strong avoidance of CO2 when presented with the choice of control or CO2-acidified water, indicating that habituation to the CO2 sensory stimuli is negligible.

Conclusions

As Atlantic cod maintained normal behavioural responses to olfactory cues, they may be tolerant to CO2-induced behavioural changes. The results also suggest that despite the long-term exposure to CO2-acidified water, the fish still preferred the control water over CO2-acidified water. Therefore, in the future, fish may alter their movements and migrations in search of waters with a lower CO2 content.

Purpose

Blended cements use waste products to replace Portland cement, the main contributor to CO2 emissions in concrete manufacture. Using blended cements reduces the embodied greenhouse gas emissions; however, little attention has been paid to the reduction in CO2 capture (carbonation) and durability. The aim of this study is to determine if the reduction in production emissions of blended cements compensates for the reduced durability and CO2 capture.

Methods

This study evaluates CO2 emissions and CO2 capture for a reinforced concrete column during its service life and after demolition and reuse as gravel filling material. Concrete depletion, due to carbonation and the unavoidable steel embedded corrosion, is studied, as this process consequently ends the concrete service life. Carbonation deepens progressively during service life and captures CO2 even after demolition due to the greater exposed surface area. In this study, results are presented as a function of cement replaced by fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BFS).

Results and discussion

Concrete made with Portland cement, FA (35 % FA), and BFS blended cements (80 % BFS) captures 47, 41, and 20 % of CO2 emissions, respectively. The service life of blended cements with high amounts of cement replacement, like CEM III/A (50 % BFS), CEM III/B (80 % BFS), and CEM II/B-V (35 % FA), was about 10 % shorter, given the higher carbonation rate coefficient. Compared to Portland cement and despite the reduced CO2 capture and service life, CEM III/B emitted 20 % less CO2 per year.

Conclusions

To obtain reliable results in a life cycle assessment, it is crucial to consider carbonation during use and after demolition. Replacing Portland cement with FA, instead of BFS, leads to a lower material emission factor, since FA needs less processing after being collected, and transport distances are usually shorter. However, greater reductions were achieved using BFS, since a larger amount of cement can be replaced. Blended cements emit less CO2 per year during the life cycle of a structure, although a high cement replacement reduces the service life notably. If the demolished concrete is crushed and recycled as gravel filling material, carbonation can cut CO2 emissions by half. A case study is presented in this paper demonstrating how the results may be utilized.  相似文献

Physical and chemical adsorption of CO2 on ZnO surfaces were studied by means of two different implementations of periodic density functional theory. Adsorption energies were computed and compared to values in the literature. In particular, it was found that the calculated equilibrium structure and internuclear distances are in agreement with previous work. CO2 adsorption was analyzed by inspection of the density of states and electron localization function. Valence bands, band gap and final states of adsorbed CO2 were investigated and the effect of atomic displacements analyzed. The partial density of states (PDOS) of chemical adsorption of CO2 on the ZnO(0001) surface show that the p orbitals of CO2 were mixed with the ZnO valence band state appearing at the top of the valence band and in regions of low-energy conduction band.

Key message

Elevated CO 2 reduced fine root dynamics (production and turnover) of white birch seedlings, especially grown in volcanic ash soil compared with brown forest soil.

Abstract

Increased atmospheric CO2 usually enhances photosynthetic ability and growth of trees. To understand how increased CO2 affects below-ground part of trees under varied soil condition, we investigated the responses of the fine root (diameter <2 mm) dynamics of Japanese white birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) which was planted in 2010. The three-year-old birch seedlings were grown in four experimental treatments comprising two levels of CO2, i.e., ambient: 380–390 and elevated: 500 μmol mol?1, in combination with two kinds of soil: brown forest (BF) soil and volcanic ash (VA) soil which has few nutrients. The growth and turnover of fine roots were measured for 3 years (2011–2013) using the Mini-rhizotron. In the first observation year, live fine root length (standing crop) in BF soil was not affected by CO2 treatment, but it was reduced by the elevated CO2 from the second observation year. In VA soil, live fine root length was reduced by elevated CO2 for all 3 years. Fine root turnover tended to decrease under elevated CO2 compared with ambient in both soil types during the first and second observation years. Turnover of fine root production and mortality was also affected by the two factors, elevated CO2 and different soil types. Median longevity of fine root increased under elevated CO2, especially in VA soil at the beginning, and a shorter fine root lifespan appeared after 2 years of observation (2011–2012). These results suggest that elevated CO2 does not consistently stimulate fine root turnover, particularly during the plant seedlings stage, as it may depend on the costs and benefits of constructing and retaining roots. Therefore, despite the other uncontrollable environment factors, carbon sequestration to the root system may be varied by CO2 treatment period, soil type and plant age.

Purpose

A major task concerning the greening of freight transportation is to influence the process of choosing an appropriate transport solution for a shipment. This paper presents the results of a detailed environmental benchmark study of freight transport chains recorded during a shipper survey administered in Switzerland in 2008.

Materials and methods

For the environmental evaluation, life cycle assessment was applied and enhanced with a new method for integrating damage to human health caused by traffic accidents based on the disability adjusted life year concept.

Results and discussion

The results show that in land-based transport, road generally has a lower environmental performance compared to intermodal and rail-only transport. Exceptions exist, e.g. for long pre- and post-haulage distances in intermodal transport or for very low train-load factors. The most relevant environmental interventions to pay attention to are, according to the methods applied, emissions of CO2, NOx and particulates as well as accident damages.

Conclusions

Rail transport is often, but not always, environmentally preferable than truck transport. Accident damages to human health should be included in each benchmark study. For practical application, a simplified benchmark methodology is proposed requiring a reduced level of detail for the input data.  相似文献
