The behavioral interactions between the chemically protected aphid hyperparasitoid Alloxysta brevis and three trophobiotic ant species were examined in the field on thistles. The patterns were not essentially influenced by hyperparasitoid sex. Ants differed in their guarding behavior of aphids and their response toward A. brevis. Lasius niger attacked the hyperparasitoid more readily than Myrmica laevinodis, while aggression by Formica rufa was intermediate. Apart from applying chemical defense, A. brevis responded to ants by flying away (mainly at L. niger) or with avoidance behavior (mainly at M. laevinodis). Additionally, females might switch their tactics from flight to defense with increasing age. Females left the plant more often after encounters with L. niger or F. rufa than with M. laevinodis. Disturbance by any ant species affected the foraging activities, reducing oviposition success to nearly zero.  相似文献

The influence of foraging by the ant, Lasius niger, on the population growth of two aphid species, Lachnus tropicalis and Myzocallis kuricola, on chestnut trees, Castanea crenata, was examined. The ant-tending effect was divergent depending on the aphid density per ant: it was positive when there were few aphids per ant, but negative when there were many aphids per ant. In addition, the density of one aphid species also influenced the ant-tending effect on the other aphid. Furthermore, the influences were asymmetrical: an increase in L. tropicalis density per ant reversed the ants effect on this species and on M. kuricola, while an increase in M. kuricola per ant did not significantly influence the ants effect on L. tropicalis. Thus, the ant seems to stabilize the L. tropicalis population density and keep this species from extinction, while the ants effect on M. kuricola depends on the density of L. tropicalis and may lead M. kuricola to extermination. This change in the ant-tending effect corresponds to the previously detected density-dependent change in predation activity of the ants on aphids. In contrast, the density-dependent change in the protection effect of the ants against natural enemies does not explain the results.  相似文献

Summary The present study reports the influence of ants on the survival of mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa) during an Oporinia autumnata (Lep., Geometridae) outbreak. Undamaged green islands with a radius of 15–20 m were observed around Formica aquilonia mounds in a defoliated area in Finnish Lapland. The herbivore densities and grazing pressure were shown to be low within this radius. The foraging strategy of ants and their influence on birch growth are discussed.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among the 12 species of the green ash group of eucalypts were examined using allozyme data, to investigate the causes of rarity in three localized endemics of the group. The relationships suggested by the allozyme data showed both similarities to and differences from those estimated from morphological data byLadiges and coworkers. The phylogenetic relationships suggest that rarity inEucalyptus burgessiana may be related to recent divergence, whileE. paliformis andE. rupicola are relatively old species, more likely to be relicts, and/or restricted to a rare habitat.  相似文献

Aphids, the main suppliers of energy-rich honeydew, play an important role in the life of ants. However, the data on the trophobiotic ant–aphid associations in the majority of regions are still limited. We present the first data on the ant–aphid relations in the south of Western Siberia. Investigations were carried out in the most typical biotopes of forest-steppe and steppe zones in the territory of Novosibirsk and Kurgan regions (Russia) during 1993–2014. There were revealed 35 species of ants and 198 species of aphids. Detected 456 ant–aphid associations involved 28 ant species and 134 myrmecophilous aphids. Seven ant species were found to consume honeydew of 9 non-myrmecophilous aphids, scraping it from the plant. This behaviour is typical of subdominant and subordinate ants which do not protect their foraging areas. Ants associate with various numbers of aphid species. About 36% of ants attended aphid colonies of less than 5 species. The largest number of myrmecophilous aphids is associated with L. niger (Linnaeus, 1758) (103 species), Formica pratensis Retzius, 1783 (50), Formica rufa group (25–33), F. (Serviformica) fusca Linnaeus, 1758 (26) and F. (S.) cunicularia Latreille, 1798 (27). Different ants play unequal roles in the formation of trophobiotic interactions with aphids. Due to complex territorial and foraging behaviour, including high functional specialization among honeydew collectors, dominant ants of Formica s. str. are one of the leaders in this process. The role of L. niger and Formica ants of the subgenus Serviformica requires further detailed investigation.  相似文献

Electrophoretic studies on seed storage proteins of various gymnosperm species showed that both salt soluble and insoluble protein fractions give taxonomic information. Among species of the genusPinus evident differences are found between the subgeneraHaploxylon (Strobus) andDiploxylon (Pinus). In sect.Strobus the two subsectt.Strobi andCembrae are readily distinguished fromP. bungeana (sect.Parrya) which appears to fall in an intermediate position between haploxyl and diploxyl pines. Among the species of subg.Diploxylon, mountain pines show very similar protein patterns in agreement with their recent speciation (Quaternary).  相似文献

An aphidophagous ladybird, Platynaspidius maculosus (Weise) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), is originally distributed in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The ladybird has recently intruded into the southern and central parts of Japan. The present study found that the larvae of this ladybird preyed on three aphid species, Aphis spiraecola, Aphis gossypii, and Toxoptera citricidus (all Hemiptera: Aphididae), feeding on young shoots of various Citrus species in August to early October in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan. Laboratory rearing of the sampled larvae confirmed that the larvae completed their development (adult emergence) by consuming each of the three aphid species. The ladybird larvae were observed foraging in aphid colonies attended by one of the four ants, Lasius japonicus, Pristomyrmex punctatus, Formica japonica, and Camponotus japonicus (all Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Field observations revealed that the foraging/feeding larvae were almost completely ignored by honeydew-collecting ants even when they physically contacted each other. Thus, in Japan, the larvae of the exotic ladybird exploit colonies of the three aphid species attended by one of the four ant species on many Citrus species. On the basis of the results, I discuss the possibility of the ladybird’s reproduction on citrus trees in Japan, probable adaptations of the ladybird larvae to aphid-attending ants, and potential impacts of the ladybird on native insect enemies attacking ant-attended aphids on citrus.  相似文献

The relationship between nuclear 1 C DNA content and cell cycle progression throughout successive stages of antheridial filaments were studied among five taxa ofChara: two dioecious species (n = 14):C. aspera (7.2 pg DNA),C. tomentosa (7.4 pg DNA), and three monoecious species (n = 28):C. vulgaris (13.5 pg DNA),C. fragilis (19.3 pg DNA), andC. contraria (19.6 pg DNA). With the use of double3H-thymidine labelling and morphometry a number of characteristics common to all of the investigated species were determined within the proliferative periods preceding spermiogenesis. These include: (1) simplified type of the cell cycle (S + G2 + M), due to complete lack of G1 intervals, (2) constant duration of S phase, (3) progressive shortening of G2 + M periods, and (4) gradual reduction of cell lengths at successive mitotic divisions. Nucleotypic dependence was found between genome size and several time parameters estimated for consecutive stages of antheridial filaments: the higher the DNA C-value, the longer the cell cycles, their component phases, the total duration of the proliferative period, as well as the lower the rate of growth of interphase cells. Differential Giemsa staining of late G2 phase nuclei revealed that the higher content of C-heterochromatin is connected with prolonged cell cycle durations in species with similar DNA C-values.  相似文献

Summary Chromate-reducing bacteria were isolated from the cooling water of an electricity generating station where reduction of chromate had caused blockage of pipes by precipitation of chromium(III) oxide. Isolates identified included the generaAlcaligenes, Vibrio, Bacillus, Micrococcus, Staphylococcus andCorynebacterium. Isolate VMC-2 with the highest chromate-reducing activity was tentatively identified asComanonas testosteroni. The concentration of added chromate (K2CrO4, 20 M)_decreased by 95% during 45 min incubation with whole cells of VMC-2. In comparison, two Fe(III)-reducing isolates,Vibrio metschnikovii andAeromonas hydrophila, from lake sediments, showed similarly high chromate-reducing activities, and were able to reduce 99% of added chromate (20 M) in 45 min. Moderate Cr(VI)-reducers included strains ofBacillus, Vibrio andCorynebacterium. Micrococcus andStaphylococcus did not reduce Cr(VI). Sulfate (0.5 and 1.0 mM) inhibited the reduction of chromate by VMC-2 suggesting competition between the two oxyanions. Chromate-reducing activity was located in the soluble fraction of this isolate. The intermediacy of Cr(V)_in the reduction of chromate was confirmed by EPR spectroscopy. The bactericidal activity of hypochlorite towards isolate VMC-2 was determined.  相似文献

Laboratory studies on predation, reproduction and development were conducted on three phytoseiid species,Typhlodromus pomi (Parrott),Phytoseius macropilis (Banks) andAmblyseius finlandicus (Oudemans). These species were dominant phytoseiid mites on the abandoned apple trees with which ecological experiments were carried out in southern Ontario, Canada. Throught the studies, a rust mite species (Diptacus gigantorhynchus sp. complex), a single consistent prey in the orchard, was used as food. Results showed that the three predators developed well with the rust mites as food, and thatA. finlandicus developed most rapidly and had the highest predation rate. However, this species showed a poor tolerance to low prey densities. These observations suggest that this species is a predacious species and the other two species were more or less general feeders. All species showed the same pre-mating behaviour (Amblyseius-Typhlodromus type), but they exhibited a variety of mating and oviposition behaviours.  相似文献

The crossability ofP. coccineus (self-incompatible) andP. vulgaris (self-compatible) was much higher whenvulgaris was used as the female parent. Reciprocal difference in crossability was due to the retarded development of embryo and endosperm tissue during the immediate post-fertilization period in the crossP. coccineus ×P. vulgaris . Backcrossing the reciprocal F1 hybrids to the maternal species was more successful than to the paternal species.Two varieties ofP. vulgaris differed significantly in their ability to hybridize with six genotypes ofP. coccineus; this difference was shown to be genetical.The F1 hybrids were readily distinguishable from the parent species at the seedling stage and could be classified into two distinct morphological types; one group showed and abnormal wrinkling of the leaves. The frequency of the abnormal progeny in the F1 generation could be satisfactorily explained on the basis of either allelic or genic interaction. The importance of this genetic system in the divergence of the two species is discussed.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Anwendbarkeit der Tetrazoliumsalz-Methode (Lojda, 1965) und der Brom-naphthyl-glykosid-Methode (Cohen u. Mitarb., 1952; Rutenburg u. Mitarb., 1958, 1960) zum cytochemischen Nachweis von -Galactosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.23), -Glucosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.20) und -Glucosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.21) in den Zellen der Pilze Neurospora crassa, Aspergillus oryzae und Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Vorkultur auf Nährböden mit Zusätzen von Enzyminduktoren) wurde untersucht. In allen Fällen waren die TS-Medien — was die Art der Enzymlokalisation, die Empfindlichkeit und Spezifität betrifft — dem Brom-naphthylglykosid-Verfahren überlegen. Bei N. crassa und A. oryzae ließen sich -Galactosidase, - und -Glucosidase, in den Zellen von S. cerevisiae jedoch nur die letzten beiden Enzyme nachweisen. Ergebnisse von Kontrollreaktionen untermauern die Spezifität der Nachweisreaktionen. In den Konidien von N. crassa und A. oryzae trat auch bei Kontrollen Pormazanbildung auf; die möglichen Ursachen werden diskutiert. Aus dem Reaktionsbild kann keine Aussage über die Art der intrazellulären Lokalisation der untersuchten Glycosidasen gemacht werden.

Summary The usefullness of the tetrazolium salt-method (Lojda, 1965) and the bromo-naphthyl-glycoside-method (Cohen et al., 1952; Rutenburg et al., 1958, 1960) for the intracellular detection of -galactosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.23), -glucosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.20) and -glucosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.21) in the cells of the fungi Neurospora crassa, Aspergillus oryzae and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (cultivation on media containing enzyme inductors) was examined. In all cases the tetrazolium salt-media gave far better results concerning enzyme localization, sensitivity and specificity. In N. crassa and A. oryzae -galactosidase, - and -glucosidase could be detected, in the cells of S. cerevisiae only the two latter enzymes. The results of control reactions demonstrate the specificity of the cytochemical reactions. In the conidia of N. crassa and A. oryzae formazan deposition was observed even in control reactions; the possible reasons are discussed. The reaction pictures give no suggestions concerning the exact intracellular localization of the glycosidases tested.

Individual bees often prefer flowers of the same species that they are already foraging on, and other individual bees prefer other flowers. This floral constancy has classically been explained as a learned behavior by which bees avoid wasting time switching between handling techniques. Choice trails were given to Bombus vagans workers that were freely foraging in mixed and pure fields of Trifolium pratense, T. repens, Viccia cracca, and Prunella vulgaris. Contrary to expectation, (1) bees showed if anything a stronger preference for their flower type in pure fields where they lacked experience than in a mixed field where they had had the opportunity to learn, (2) there was greater constancy in a mixed field of the two morphologically similar Trifolium species than in a mixed field of the morphologically disparate T. pratense and P. vulgaris, and (3) bees were more willing to switch between flowers of distinct morphologies when the colors were similar than between flowers of distinct colors when the morphologies were similar. We suggest that constancy is due to some form of perceptual conditioning whereby individual bees become temporarily sensitized to one or a few floral cues.  相似文献

Transfer of fresh pollen either by wind or by insects is strongly related to the degree of its stickiness. The sticky substances involved should be understood as pollenkitt. Ultrastructural investigations indicate that the sticky pollen of entomophilous angiosperms (in this publicationHamamelis vernalis andH. virginiana, Corylopsis platypetala) results from the deposition of usually electron-dense, homogeneous pollenkitt mainly on the outside layer of the exine. In contrast, the pollen of anemophilous angiosperms (in this publicationParrotia persica, Platanus orientalis, Thalictrum flavum andQuercus robur), but also of some entomophilous angiosperms with special pollination ecology (e.g.Aquilegia vulgaris) is rather dry and powdery. In these cases the pollenkitt often is electron-transparent and inhomogeneous and is mainly removed into the cavities of the exine. Ultrastructure and deposition of pollen and pollenkitt in ambophilous angiosperms (in this publicationThalictrum minus, Castanea sativa) are ± intermediate.

Zebra seabream, Diplodus cervinus cervinus, caught off the Canary Islands is characterized by protogynous hermaphroditism. The male:female ratio is in favour of females (1:2.16). The reproductive season extends from spring to summer, with a peak in spawning activity in May–June. Males reach maturity at a larger total length, 327mm (5 years old) than females 273mm (4 years old). Recruitment occurs from late October to January in shallow waters of 0.5–8m depth along the coastal line. The recruits are located over rocky substrates with an important algae vegetation forming schools lower than 2m2. During the spawning season, schools of adults from 3 to 8 fish are observed. The schools are formed by one large individual and a few moderate size individuals. Mating takes place in small groups formed by one dominant male and a group of several females (polygamy). Moderate size individuals are often observed mixed in large schools (up to 30 individuals) of Diplodus sargus cadenati. Subadults form groups of a few fish (<5 individuals) or more commonly mixed groups (>15 individuals) with individuals of species of similar size. Otoliths age readings indicate that the population consists of 18 age groups, including a very high proportion of individuals between 2 and 4 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the whole population are: L = 603mm, k = 0.149 year–1, and t0 = –0.22 year. The mean rates of total, natural and fishing mortality are 0.551, 0.215 and 0.336 year–1, respectively. The length at first capture is 183mm. The exploitation rate indicates that the stock is overfished. The direct effects of fishing on the population result in changes in the abundance, with a reduction to 85% of the unexploited equilibrium level. The length at first capture by the commercial fishery is less than the length at maturity. With 58% of the total catch below this length there is a danger of recruitment overfishing.  相似文献

Summary Spiders have been shown to be important predators on ant populations, although ant mortality may be low. Western widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) predation on Pogonomyrmex rugosus ant nests is slight, less than 0.2% of the nest population per day. Yet, the ants respond by halting foraging temporarily and may even close the nest entrace with pebbles. If spiders are removed from such nests, the ants become active within 24 h and within five days foraging activity reaches higher levels than at any previous time of the year.Ants have at least four responses to spiders predation: 1) Moving the nest entrace; 2) posting of guards; 3) attacking the spiders; 4) halting foraging. Pogonomyrmex rugosus practices the fourth response, although it results in losses of food intake into the nest. This is apparently the only option available. If the ants continue to forage, the spider density may increase, resulting in heavy mortality of the ants.  相似文献

Since the invasion of Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum from North America we searched for parasitoids of this aphid on Solidago altissima in Japan to determine what species of native parasitoids attack the newly invasive aphid. We found three primary parasitoid species: Ephedrus plagiator and Praon yomenae (Braconidae, Aphidiinae) and Aphelinus albipodus (Aphelinidae). We also found eight hyperparasitoid species: Syrphophagus sp. (Encyrtidae), Dendrocerus carpenteri (Megaspilidae), Asaphes suspensus (Pteromalidae) and Pachyneuron aphidis (Pteromalidae) through both E. plagiator and A. albipodus; Phaenoglyphis villosa (Figitidae, Charipinae), Aprostocetus sp. (Eulophidae, Tetrastichinae) and D. laticeps through E. plagiator, and Alloxysta sp. nr brevis (Figitidae, Charipinae) through A. albipodus. Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum is usually attacked by rather polyphagous primary parasitoids, E. plagiator and A. albipodus, in Japan, where an oligophagous parasitoid specialized to allied aphid species is probably absent. The hyperparasitoid community of U. nigrotuberculatum is common to those of the aphids occurring in open field‐type habitats in Japan.  相似文献

DNA polymorphisms in the 1--globin gene region in nine Asian macaques(Macaca fuscata, M. mulatta, M. nemestrina, M. cyclopis, M. fascicularis, M. arctoides, M. radiata, M. maura, andM. assamensis) were examined using several restriction endonucleases and the human 1, IVS2, and IVS2 probes. TheBamHI site 3 to the -globin gene was polymorphic inM. fuscata andM. mulatta, while the HincII site and the EcoRI site in the 1-globin gene region was highly polymorphic inM. fuscata andM. mulatta, respectively. These polymorphic sites also seem to be present in other Asian macaques. The present study of the polymorphism at theBamHI site 3 to the -globin gene in Asian macaques supports, at the nuclear DNA level, the idea that thefascicularis group includingM. fuscata, M. mulatta, M. cyclopis, andM. fascicularis is different from other Asian macaque groups.This study was supported in part by the Cooperation Research Program of the Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University.  相似文献

A catalytic fragment, 1-298, derived from limited chymotryptic digestion of phosphorylaseb kinase (Harris, W.R.et al., J. Biol. Chem., 265: 11740–11745, 1990), is reported to have about six-fold greater specific activity than does the subunit-calmodulin complex. To test whether there is an inhibitory domain located outside the catalytic core of the subunit, full-length wild-type and seven truncated forms of were expressed inE. coli. Recombinant proteins accumulate in the inclusion bodies and can be isolated, solubilized, renatured, and purified further by ammonium sulfate precipitation and Q-Sepharose column. Four out of seven truncated mutants show similar ( 1-353 and 1-341) or less ( 1-331 and 1-276) specific activity than does the full-length wild-type , 1-386. Three truncated forms, 1-316, 1-300, and 1-290 have molar specific activities approximately twice as great as those of the full-length wild-type and the nonactivated holoenzyme. All recombinant s exhibit similarK m values for both substrates, i.e., about 18M for phosphorylaseb and about 75 M for MgATP. Three truncated s, 1-316, 1-300, and 1-290, have a 1.9- to 2.5-fold greater catalytic efficiency (V max/K m) than that of the full-length wild-type and a 3.5- to 4.5-fold greater efficiency than that of the truncated 1-331. This evidence suggests that there is at least one inhibitory domain in the C-terminal region of , which is located at 301-331· 1-290, but not 1-276, which contains the highly conserved kinase domain, is the minimum sequence required for the subunit to exhibit phosphotransferase activity. Both 1-290 and 1-300 have several properties similar to full-length wild-type , including metal ion responses (activation by free Mg2+ and inhibition by free Mn2+) pH dependency, and substrate specificities.  相似文献

We describe the behavioral interactions between honeydew-collecting workers of the ants Lasius nigerand Myrmica ruginodisand females of three species of aphidiid wasps (Lysiphlebus cardui, Lysiphlebus testaceipes, Trioxys angelicae)foraging for their aphid host, Aphis fabaessp. cirsiiacanthoidis,on thistles. Using field and laboratory experiments, we show that the ant-parasitoid interactions are species specific. Workers of both ant species generally attacked and killed females of T. angelicae,but they ignored those of L. cardui.This pattern was not altered when we anesthetized the wasps slightly with carbon dioxide to reduce their mobility. Prior contacts between L. carduiand either conspecific L. nigerfrom a different nest or workers of a different ant species (M. ruginodis)did not influence L. niger'snonaggressive behavior. The number of aphids parasitized by L. testaceipeswas significantly reduced in aphid colonies attended by L. niger,although this parasitoid was rarely attacked by ants. In encounters between these species of ants and wasps, ant aggression is consistent with differences in wasp behavior. We suggest that, in addition, chemical cues located in the cuticula may enable L. carduito avoid detection by honeydew-collecting ants.  相似文献
