The composition of fatty acids in the tissue of heart, gill and skull oil of the three redfish species, Sebastes viviparus, Sebastes marinus and Sebastes mentella was determined by a chemometric method. The method consists of methanolysis of samples of the tissues and of the oils, gas chromatography of the resulting fatty acid methyl esters and multivariate statistical treatment, by principal component analysis, of the analytical data. Although the differences in fatty acid composition among the three tissues were the dominating features of the data, the three species had significantly different fatty acid profiles within each tissue, even though variation among the individuals was considerable. The fatty acid profiles appear to be species specific. The mutual relationship between S. marinus and S. mentella is closer than the relationship between either of them and S. viviparus.  相似文献

Significant body shape differences were observed between two commercially important redfish species Sebastes fasdatus and Sebastes mentella , in the Gulf of St Lawrence, first classified according to the variability at the MDH-A* locus, a diagnostic criterion for the two species in allopatry. The observed sexual dimorphism was probably related to the presence of gravid females in the sample. Sebastes mentella appeared to be more fusiform than S. fasdatus , a characteristic that may reflect the more pelagic behaviour of S. mentella . The body shape of their hybrids was closer to that of S. mentella . Similarities between hybrids and S. mentella were also observed for meristic characteristics and depth distribution. The implications of these similarities for introgression are discussed. Body shape variability of specimens of hybrid origin was greater than that of either parental species, with features ranging from S. mentella-like to S. fasciatus -like. The role of introgression in generating morphological variability is emphasized.  相似文献

Fatty acid and stable isotope analyses have previously been used to investigate foraging patterns of fish, birds, marine mammals and most recently cephalopod species. To evaluate the application of these methods for dietary studies in squid, it is important to understand the degree to which fatty acid and stable isotope signatures of prey species are reflected in the squids' tissue. Four groups of Lolliguncula brevis were fed on prey species with distinctly different fatty acid and stable isotope profiles over 30 consecutive days. One group of squid were fed fish for fifteen days, followed by crustaceans for a further fifteen days. A second and third group were fed exclusively on fish or crustaceans for thirty days. And a fourth group was fed on a mixture of fish and crustaceans for thirty days. Analysis of squid tissue showed that, after 10 days of feeding, fatty acid profiles of squid tended to reflect those of their prey. Squid that fed on a single prey type, i.e. fish or crustacean, showed only minor modifications in fatty acid proportions after the initial change and fatty acid profiles were clearly distinguishable between the two feeding groups. Shifts in fatty acid proportions towards respective prey profiles could clearly be observed in squid the diet of which was swapped after 15 days. Clear differences could also be seen in fatty acid profiles of squid feeding on a mixed diet with trends towards either fish or crustacean fatty acid signatures. Stable isotope signatures of squid tissues clearly distinguished between animals feeding on different diets and supported findings from fatty acid analysis, thus indicating both methods to be viable tools in feeding studies on squid species.  相似文献

Although substantial information is available regarding the fatty acid composition of lipids of the yolk and of the developing tissues of the chicken embryo, there is little knowledge on this topic for other avian species. The aim of the present study was to compare the yolk and embryonic tissue fatty acid profiles for a species selecting its food in the wild (the lesser black backed gull) with one fed on a standard commercial diet (the commercially reared pheasant). The fatty acid compositions of the yolk lipids were determined, and major differences were observed between the two species. In particular, the phospholipid of the gull yolk was enriched in 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 (18.8 and 7.1%, respectively, by weight of total fatty acids) in comparison with the pheasant (4.0 and 4.1%, respectively). The fatty acid compositions of the embryonic tissues were determined using eggs incubated in the laboratory. For the liver and heart, the fatty acid composition of the lipids in the two species reflected the initial yolk composition, with the gull tissue lipids generally containing higher proportions of 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 than those of the pheasant. In contrast, the fatty acid profiles of the brain phospholipid were essentially identical in the two species, with 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 comprising approximately 9 and 17%, respectively, of total fatty acids in both cases.  相似文献

Baobab seed oil contains specific fatty acids. Most of the studies on baobab fatty acids have been carried out singly and in isolation from each other, making it difficult to compare results through different species. The objective of the present study is to establish the seed fatty acid composition of each Adansonia species in order to evaluate and understand the relationships between the oil chemical compositions, the baobabs’ taxonomy and, the ecological and geographical origin of each seed lot. The seed oils have been analysed using gas chromatography (GC). The oils of all baobab species contain three major fatty acids: palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids. They also contain specific fatty acids such as cyclopropenic and cyclopropanic acids, which are characteristic of the Malvaceae family seed oils. It was possible to distinguish three sections through principal components analysis using the eleven fatty acids identified by GC. The Adansonia section contains high rates of oleic acid (± 35%), the Brevitubae section is rich in palmitic acid (± 42%) and the Longitubae section contains high levels of dihydrosterulic acid (± 5%). The oil fatty acid composition, however, does not enable a definitive characterization of profiles according to species. The fatty acid composition is not significantly influenced by the geographical, soil and climate conditions of the collection sites.  相似文献

The possibility of calculating useful microbial community diversity indices from environmental polar lipid fatty acid and 16S rDNA PCR-DGGE data was investigated. First, the behavior of the species richness, Shannon's, and Simpson's diversity indices were determined on polar lipid fatty acid profiles of 115 pure cultures, communities constructed from those profiles with different numbers of species, and constructed communities with different distributions of species. Differences in the species richness of these artificial communities was detected by all three diversity indices, but they were insensitive to the evenness of the distribution of species. Second, data from a field experiment with substrate addition to soil was used to compare the methods developed for lipid- and DNA-based diversity indices. Very good agreement was found between indices calculated from environmental polar lipid fatty acid profiles and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profiles from matched samples (Pearson's correlation coefficient r=0.95-0.96). A method for data pre-treatment for diversity calculations is described.  相似文献

As part of a more extensive study on the inter- and intraspecific genetic variation of redfish, genus Sebastes , a total sample of 593 individuals of the species Sebastes viviparus were collected from several locations in Norwegian waters and off the south-west coast of Iceland. Haemoglobin and five polymorphic enzymes were analysed. A new haemoglobin polymorphism was observed, and unique alleles were found in Icelandic and Norwegian samples. The results of the enzyme analyses were largely consistent with previous results, but interpopulation variation was observed in the frequencies of IDHP * and Hb * alleles. S. viviparus displayed higher similarity with S. fasciatus from the West Atlantic than with the other Sebastes species.  相似文献

The balance of essential fatty acid is important for good health and normal development. Essential fatty acids (EFA) are the precursors of prostaglandins (PGs), thromboxanes and leukotrienes (LT). The aim of this clinical study was to determine the total fatty acid level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), saturated fatty acids (SFA) and each fatty acids level of inflamed and normal gingival tissues. Twenty-seven subjects were included the present study. Nineteen samples of inflamed human gingival tissue (nine of fibrous hyperplasia (FH), ten of peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) and eight samples of normal human gingival tissue were analyzed. The characteristics of inflammation were assessed histologically. Variance analyses were performed to assess the differences among tissues. The total cellular fatty acid profiles of the tissues in inflamed human gingival tissue and in eight samples of normal human gingival tissue were determined by gas chromatography using Sherlock microbial identification system (MIS) software (Microbial ID, Newark, DE, USA) with a database of FAME profiles for eukary. PUFAs, MUFAs, and SFAs were quantified by Sherlock microbial identification system (MIS) or database gas chromatography (DGC). There were statistically significant differences between the concentrations in inflamed (FH, PGCG) and healthy gingival tissues for PUFA and MUFA (P<0.001, P<0,011, respectively). There were statistically significant differences among the concentrations in FH, PGCG, and healthy gingival tissues for SFA (P<0.0001). Arachidonic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linoleic acid were increased in inflamed tissue. The results of this study showed that unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA and MUFA) significantly increased in inflamed gingival tissues.  相似文献

Functional traits determine the occurrence of species along environmental gradients and their coexistence with other species. Understanding how traits evolved among coexisting species helps to infer community assembly processes. We propose fatty acid composition in consumer tissue as a functional trait related to both food resources and physiological functions of species. We measured phylogenetic signal in fatty acid profiles of 13 field‐sampled Collembola (springtail) species and then combined the data with published fatty acid profiles of another 24 species. Collembola fatty acid profiles generally showed phylogenetic signal, with related species resembling each other. Long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, related to physiological functions, demonstrated phylogenetic signal. In contrast, most food resource biomarker fatty acids and the ratios between bacterial, fungal, and plant biomarker fatty acids exhibited no phylogenetic signal. Presumably, fatty acids related to physiological functions have been constrained during Collembola evolutionary history: Species with close phylogenetic affinity experienced similar environments during divergence, while niche partitioning in food resources among closely related species favored species coexistence. Measuring phylogenetic signal in ecologically relevant traits of coexisting species provides an evolutionary perspective to contemporary assembly processes of ecological communities. Integrating phylogenetic comparative methods with community phylogenetic and trait‐based approaches may compensate for the limitations of each method when used alone and improve understanding of processes driving and maintaining assembly patterns.  相似文献

1. The possible relationship between the fatty acid composition of the adipose tissue of the marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus) and its dietary lipid intake was examined after a long-term feeding trial. 2. Only the proportions of stearic and linoleic acid in the adipose tissue were similar to those in the diet. The proportions of all other saturated and unsaturated fatty acid components were significantly different thus greatly reducing the potential value of this relationship in the marmoset. 3. The phospholipid fatty acid profiles of cardiac and skeletal muscle, aortae, kidney, liver, lung and brain were also compared to those of the plasma, platelets or red blood cells. 4. With the exception of the liver where the fatty acid profile is similar to that of the plasma, no clear relationships were found between the fatty acid profiles of these tissues and the components of the blood. 5. The fatty acid composition of skeletal muscle was very similar to that of the cardiac muscle of the marmoset, suggesting that muscle biopsy might be useful as an index of cardiac muscle composition.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition in the heart tissue and muscle tissue of the Nile perch, Lates niloticus, and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus populations from Lakes Kioga and Victoria was determined by methanolysis and gas chromatography of the resulting fatty acid methyl esters. The analytical data were treated by multivariate principal component analysis. The most abundant individual fatty acids were palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1n9), vaccenic acid (18:1n7), arachidonic acid (20:4n6) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n3). Due to high levels of both n6 and n3 fatty acids, the ratios of n3 to n6 were between 1 and 2, typical for freshwater fish species. Two Lake Victoria and one Lake Kioga populations of Nile tilapia and Nile perch were distinguished by the fatty acid profiles in their heart and muscle tissue. The heart tissue showed better separation than muscle tissue, due to dominance of polar phospholipids. It is rationalised that genetics are more important than diet in determining the fatty acid composition of the tissues.  相似文献

To investigate possible differences in triacylglyceride accumulation in adipose tissue, six different species have been studied (hamster, mouse, rat, rabbit, dog and pig). They were fed the same diet of high proportion of saturated fatty acids during 3 months after the lactation period. There are significant differences between the fatty acids in the diet and the studied tissue, a higher proportion of myristic, palmitoleic and linoleic acids together with a minor proportion of palmitic and stearic acids being accumulated in all studied species except in pig. The differences among species were significant in most cases being maximal in pig (57.7% of saturated fatty acids) and hamster (24.4% of saturated fatty acids). There is a direct relationship between the position of each fatty acid in the triacylglyceride and its proportion in the tissue, this proportion being maximal when the fatty acid is placed on position 2 in the triacylglycerides. There is also a relationship between the different position in the phylogenetic scale of each studied species and the differential fatty acid composition. All these data suggest that there are specific mechanisms involved in the fatty acids accumulation on the adipose tissue. The position of the different fatty acids in the triacylglyceride studied could be a part of this mechanism.  相似文献

Both basal metabolic rate (BMR) and maximum lifespan potential (MLSP) vary with body size in mammals and birds and it has been suggested that these are mediated through size-related variation in membrane fatty acid composition. Whereas the physical properties of membrane fatty acids affect the activity of membrane proteins and, indirectly, an animal’s BMR, it is the susceptibility of those fatty acids to peroxidation which influence MLSP. Although there is a correlation between body size and MLSP, there is considerable MLSP variation independent of body size. For example, among bird families, Galliformes (fowl) are relatively short-living and Psittaciformes (parrots) are unusually long-living, with some parrot species reaching maximum lifespans of more than 100 years. We determined BMR and tissue phospholipid fatty acid composition in seven tissues from three species of parrots with an average MLSP of 27 years and from two species of quails with an average MLSP of 5.5 years. We also characterised mitochondrial phospholipids in two of these tissues. Neither BMR nor membrane susceptibility to peroxidation corresponded with differences in MLSP among the birds we measured. We did find that (1) all birds had lower n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content in mitochondrial membranes compared to those of the corresponding tissue, and that (2) irrespective of reliance on flight for locomotion, both pectoral and leg muscle had an almost identical membrane fatty acid composition in all birds.  相似文献

We detail the fatty acid compositions of last larval instars of two lepidopterans, Spodoptera frugiperda and Trichoplusia ni, two tissues from T. ni, a cell line derived from each species and the respective larval and cell culture media. Larval whole-body and specific tissue fatty acid profiles exhibited the major features commonly found in previous lepidopteran analyses, whereas the cell-line fatty acid compositions were substantially different from the compositions of both their growth media and larvae of their respective species. It appears that these cell-line patterns result from increased monoene biosynthesis in response to low levels of exogenous polyunsaturated fatty acids, a commonly observed essential fatty acid deficiency symptom in whole animals.  相似文献

Fatty acid and alcohol components of preen oil were determined in three gull species that belong to two systematic genera: herring gull Larus argentatus, common gull Larus canus and black-headed gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus. All gulls were captured in winter, in Gdańsk, Poland. All gulls produced monoesters composed of C7–C16 saturated fatty acids and C11–C20 saturated alcohols, with n-octanoic acid and n-hexadecanol as the major fatty acid and alcohol, respectively. Preen oils of black-headed gull had higher content of trimethyl fatty acids, 2,8-dimethylundecanoic acid, 2,6-dimethylundecanoic acid and 2,6-dimethylnonanoic acid, and lower content of 2-methyl fatty acids than oils of herring gull and common gull. Preen oils produced by black-headed gull also had lower content of 2-methyl alcohols. The relative contents of n-octanoic acid and n-hexadecanol did not differ among species. The differences among species are probably not a result of different diet, as all gulls fed mainly on household refuse. Hence, preen oil analysis confirmed the taxonomic relations among these gull species, that recently were placed into two different genera.  相似文献

The evolutionary importance of introgressive hybridization has long been recognized by plant evolutionists, and there is now a growing recognition for its potential role in animals as well. Detailed empirical investigations of this evolutionary process, however, are still lacking in many animal groups, particularly in the marine environment. Using integrated microsatellite DNA data (eight loci analysed over 803 individuals representing 17 sampling locations) and multivariate statistical procedures (principal component, factorial correspondence and admixture proportion analyses), we: (i) provide a detailed dissection of the dynamics of introgressive hybridization between Sebastes fasciatus and S. mentella, two economically important redfishes from the North-west Atlantic; and (ii) infer the factors potentially involved in the maintenance of the hybrid zone observed in the gulf of St. Lawrence and south of Newfoundland. This study provided one of the rare examples of extensive introgressive hybridization in the ocean, and highlighted the predominant role of this process in shaping the extent of genetic diversity, interspecific differences and population structuring among redfishes from the North-west Atlantic. The extensive (average rate of introgression = 15%) but geographically circumscribed and asymmetrical pattern of introgressive hybridization, the sympatric persistence of two reproductively isolated introgressed groups, the differential patterns of linkage disequilibrium among samples, and the maintenance of genetic integrity of both species outside the defined zone of introgression despite high potential for gene flow, all implicated selection in promoting and maintaining the observed pattern of introgression.  相似文献

The fatty acid profiles of all described species of the nitrite-oxidizing genera Nitrobacter, Nitrococcus, Nitrospina and Nitrospira were analyzed. The four genera had distinct profiles, which can be used for the differentiation and allocation of new isolates to these genera. The genus Nitrobacter is characterized by vaccenic acid as the main compound with up to 92% of the fatty acids and the absence of hydroxy fatty acids. The genus Nitrococcus showed cis-9-hexadecenoic acid, hexadecanoic acid and vaccenic acid as main parts. Small amounts of 3-hydroxy-dodecanoic acid were detected. The genus Nitrospina possessed tetradecanoic acid and cis-9-hcxadecenoic acid as main compounds, also 3-hydroxy-hexadecanoic acid was detected for this genus. The genus Nitrospira showed a pattern with more variations among the two described species. These organisms are characterized by the cis-7 and cis-11-isomers of hexadecenoic acid. For Nitrospira moscoviensis a specific new fatty acid was found, which represented the major constituent in the fatty acid profiles of autotrophically grown cultures. It was identified as 11-methyl-hexadecanoic acid. Since this compound is not known for other bacterial taxa, it represents a potential lipid marker for the detection of Nitrospira moscoviensis relatives in enrichment cultures and environmental samples. A cluster analysis of the fatty acid profiles is in accordance with 16S rRNA sequence-based phylogeny of the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria.  相似文献
