Exploratory behavior serves the function of acquiring information when facing environmental uncertainty, thus plays an important role for animals living on patchy or ephemeral resources. Our study tested the hypothesis that exploratory behavior is affected by ecological factors associated with the risk of predation. We conducted experiments to examine exploration behavior of wild‐caught Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus) under the influences of background color patterns (white or camouflaged) and group sizes (single vs. five sparrows). We further conducted two‐pattern choice experiments and offered sparrows backgrounds combining those two color patterns. In comparisons with single sparrows, flocking sparrows had shorter landing latencies, started exploring sand patches earlier, spent less total time on the ground before pecking at the first patch and nearly successfully located and pecked all patches. In contrast, sparrows responded nearly indifferently to the two single‐pattern backgrounds; yet when given a choice, sparrows still favored the camouflaged portion in the two‐pattern backgrounds and first landed more frequently there. Twice as many patches were left untouched on the two‐pattern backgrounds, mostly by single sparrows, than on both types of single‐pattern backgrounds. In tests of flocks, sparrows that first landed on the ground to initiate exploration had a higher chance to also first explore a sand patch than random expectation on single‐pattern backgrounds, but not necessarily on two‐pattern backgrounds. Our results demonstrate context‐specific effects of social exploration, suggest possible influence of individual variation and offer evidence for advantages of group living in situations where explorers have to cope with environmental uncertainty.  相似文献

Movement and searching behaviors at diverse spatial scales are important for understanding how animals interact with their environment. Although the shapes of branches and the voids in arboreal habitats seem likely to affect searching behaviors, their influence is poorly understood. To gain insights into how both environmental structure and the attributes of an animal may affect movement and searching, we compared the three-dimensional exploratory movements of snakes in the dark on two simulated arboreal surfaces (disc and horizontal cylinder). Most of the exploratory movements of snakes in the dark were a small fraction of the distances they could reach while bridging gaps in the light. The snakes extended farther away from the edge of the supporting surface at the ends of the cylinder than from the sides of the cylinder or from any direction from the surface of the disc. The exploratory movements were not random, and the surface shape and three-dimensional directions had significant interactive effects on how the movements were structured in time. Thus, the physical capacity for reaching did not limit the area that was explored, but the shape of the supporting surface and the orientation relative to gravity did create biased searching patterns.  相似文献

Video tracking equipment was used to quantify the behavior of adult deathwatch beetles, Xestobium rufovillosum in a light/dark choice chamber. Effects of insect age, sex, and mating status on this behavior were analysed. The behavior recorded included the initial direction of movement, the time taken to reach the light or dark zone, the time spent in each zone, the time spent moving in each zone and the distance moved in each zone. The results show that both male and female insects 1–12 days old prefer the light zone. Insects more than 12 days old demonstrate sexually differential photoresponsive behavior. Males show a preference for the light. Females show an increasing preference for the dark, mated females more so than unmated females. The implications of these differences in behavior are discussed in relation to control programmes.  相似文献

Many crayfish species inhabit murky waters or have a crepuscular lifestyle, which forces them to rely on chemical and mechanical information rather than visual input. Information on how they use one form of mechanical information-tactile cues-to explore their local environment is limited. We observed the exploratory behavior of the crayfish Cherax destructor in a T-maze under red light. Animals moved forward along the long arm of the maze and then moved equally in one of two available directions. The arm chosen by one crayfish did not affect that selected by a second crayfish tested immediately after in an unwashed maze. Previous experience in the maze also did not affect the choice. We found, however, that crayfish with one antenna denervated or splinted back to the carapace turned more often toward the unaltered side. Our data support the hypothesis that crayfish bilaterally compare information from their antennae.  相似文献

Different models of rodent maternal separation (MS) have been used to investigate long-term neurobiological and behavioral changes, associated with early stress. However, few studies have involved the analysis of sex-related differences in central anxiety modulation. This study investigated whether MS during breastfeeding affected adult males and females in terms of anxiety and brain GABA-A receptor-alpha-subunit immunoreactivity. The brain areas analyzed were the amygdale (AM), hippocampus (HP), medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), medial preoptic area (POA) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Rats were housed under a reversed light/dark cycle (lights off at 7∶00 h) with access to water and food ad libitum. Animals underwent MS twice daily during the dark cycle from postnatal day 1 to postnatal day 21. Behavior was tested when rats were 65–70 days old using the elevated plus maze and after brains were treated for immunohistochemistry. We found that separated females spent more time in the open arms and showed more head dipping behavior compared with controls. The separated males spent more time in the center of the maze and engaged in more stretching behavior than the controls. Immunohistochemistry showed that separated females had less immunostained cells in the HP, mPFC, PVN and POA, while separated males had fewer immunolabeled cells in the PFC, PVN and AM. These results could indicate that MS has gender-specific effects on anxiety behaviors and that these effects are likely related to developmental alterations involving GABA-A neurotransmission.  相似文献

CCK acts peripherally as a satiating peptide released during meals in response to lipid feeding and centrally functions in the modulation of feeding, exploratory, and memory activities. The present study determined metabolic parameters, food intake, anxiety-like behaviors, and cognitive function in mice lacking the CCK gene. We studied intestinal fat absorption, body composition, and food intake of CCK knockout (CCK-KO) mice by using the noninvasive measurement of intestinal fat absorption along with quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR) imaging and the DietMax system, respectively. Additionally, exploratory and memory capacities were assessed by monitoring running wheel activity and conducting elevated plus-maze and Morris water-maze tests with these mice. Compared with wild-type (WT) littermate controls, CCK-KO mice had normal food intake, fat absorption, body weight, and body mass. CCK-KO mice ate more food than control animals during the light period and less food during the dark period. Energy expenditure was unchanged between the genotypes; however, CCK-KO mice displayed greater fatty acid oxidation. CCK-KO mice were as active as WT animals in the running wheel test. CCK-KO mice spent more time in the closed arms of an elevated plus-maze, indicative of increased anxiety. Additionally, CCK-KO mice exhibited attenuated performance in a passive avoidance task and impaired spatial memory in the Morris water maze test. We conclude that CCK is involved in metabolic rate and is important for memory and exploration. CCK is intimately involved in multiple processes related to cognitive function and food intake regulation.  相似文献

Estrogen may have differing effects on 'anxiety' responses under different conditions. The current study tested the effects of estrogen on anxiety-like behavior when administered for 6-7 days in ovariectomized (OVX) female rats. Two animal paradigms were utilized; the elevated plus maze (EPM), measuring changes in innate fear of exploration of open spaces; and the social interaction test (SIT), measuring the exploration of a novel, same gender partner. In the EPM, estradiol-treated OVX females both entered and spent more time in the open arms than control OVX females, indicating an anxiolytic-like action of estradiol. In contrast, estradiol treated OVX females interacted less with the partner animal in the SIT compared with controls suggesting anxiogenic-like effects. The possible anxiogenic effect of estradiol in the SIT is supported by two findings: (1) the effect is reversed by the anxiolytic drug alprazolam and (2) estrogen did not affect locomotion and therefore, the reduced social interaction is not due to reduced activity. Acute administration of progesterone (5 mg/kg), which has anxiolytic properties, did not reverse estradiol-induced social interaction deficits, suggesting that lack of progesterone did not account for estradiol's anxiogenic effects. These results, while seemingly contradictory when interpreted within a unified concept of anxiety, may well reflect the ethological roles of reproductive hormones and their effects on different types of exploratory anxiety.  相似文献

There is scarce information regarding the effects of anesthetic doses of the non-competitive N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist ketamine on anxiety. The current study evaluated the acute effects of intraperitoneally (i.p.) administered anesthetic ketamine (100 mg/kg) i.p. on anxiety in rats. For this purpose, the light/dark and the open field tests were utilized. The effects of anesthetic ketamine on motility were also examined using a motility cage. In the light/dark test, anesthetic ketamine, administered 24 h before testing reduced the number of transitions between the light and dark compartments and the time spent in the light compartment in the rats compared with their control cohorts. In addition, ketamine was found to exert a depressive effect on rats’ motility. In the open field test, animals treated with anesthetic ketamine 24 h before testing spent essentially no time in the central area of the apparatus, decreased horizontal ambulatory activity, and preserved to a certain extent their exploratory behaviour compared to their control counterparts. The results suggest that, in spite of its hypokinetic effect, a single anesthetic ketamine administration apparently induces an anxiety-like state, while largely preserving exploratory behaviour in the rat. These effects were time-dependent they since they were extinguished when testing was carried out 48 h after anesthetic ketamine administration.

Disturbances of circadian rhythms are associated with many types of mood disorders; however, it is unknown whether a dysfunctional circadian pacemaker can be the primary cause of altered emotional behavior. To test this hypothesis, male and female mice carrying a mutation of the circadian gene, Clock, were compared to wild-type mice in an array of behavioral tests used to measure exploratory activity, anxiety, and behavioral despair. Female Clock mutant mice exhibited significantly greater activity and rearing in an open field and a greater number of total arm entries in the elevated plus maze. In addition, female Clock mutant mice spent significantly more time swimming in the forced swim test than wild-type mice on both days of a 2-day test. Male Clock mutant mice also exhibited increased exploration of the open field and increased swimming in the forced swim test; however, behavioral changes were less robust in Clock mutant males compared to Clock mutant females. These changes in behavior were not dependent on the expression of a lengthened free-running period but were more or less striking depending on the testing conditions. These data indicate that the Clock mutation leads to increased exploratory behavior and increased escape-seeking behavior, and, conversely, does not result in increased anxiety or depressive-like behavior. These results suggest that the Clock gene is involved in regulating behavioral arousal, and that Clock may interact with sex hormones to produce these behavioral changes.  相似文献

Abstract

The effect of two antidepressant drugs (+)‐ and (‐)‐oxaprotiline hydrochloride (Ciba‐Geigy, OXA) on the exploration and the basal activity of rats in the light and dark phases of the diurnal cycle was investigated. (+)‐OXA is a selective noradrenaline (NA) uptake inhibitor, while its (‐)‐enantiomer is devoid of such an activity. Male Wistar rats housed individually on a 12:12 h light‐dark schedule (light on: 07.00 h) were treated with (+)‐ or (‐)‐OXA in a dose of 10 mg/kg twice daily, for 14 days. The rats received the last dose at the beginning of the light or dark phase and their movements were registered using Animex actometers for 12 h. The first 30 min of activity was regarded as the exploratory and the further period as the basal activity. In the light phase both (+)‐ and (‐)‐OXA decreased the exploration (80% and 70% of control, resp., p < 0.05) and potentiated it (180% and 190% of control, resp., p < 0.01) in the dark phase. The effect on the ultradian rhythm of the basal activity was phase‐dependent also. (+)‐OXA prolonged the period and did not change mesor, amplitude or acrophase of the rhythm in the light phase, and diminished mesor and amplitude, shifted acrophase and did not change period in the dark phase. (‐)‐OXA did not change parameters of the rhythm in the light phase and shortened period, diminished mesor and shifted acrophase of the rhythm in the dark phase. The results show that both (+)‐ and (‐)‐OXA given in the same dose change the same activity in opposite ways in the light and dark phases of the diurnal cycle. The NA uptake inhibition seems not to be a requisite of the light/dark phase differences.  相似文献

It often is assumed that more distant allopatry should reflect reduced rates of contemporary gene flow and/or greater divergence in mate recognition systems. This assumption, however, is rarely tested and may not always be appropriate. Here we investigated female preference for local and foreign males in a morphologically variable Australian freshwater fish, the Pacific blue-eye Pseudomugil signifer. Using a multidisciplinary approach that combined molecular phylogeography with conventional mate choice experiments, we found female blue-eyes spent more time in association with local males only when the alternative was a foreigner from a geographically and genetically more distant population. When offered the choice between two foreign males, females associated more with males from the population that was more closely adjacent to their own. Our results suggest that female preference for local over foreign males in blue-eyes may depend on how genetically and geographically separated populations are from one another.  相似文献

Choice tests have been widely used to assess animal preferences. In the case of group‐living species, these tests are commonly presented to animals in groups, because isolation can have strong effects on behaviour and motivation. However, assessing preference at the group level could be misleading if strong control of movement, through influential individuals, and group cohesion were present. The needs of majority of the population might not be properly represented by the test results. The current study investigated whether or not groups of ducks (four ducklings per group) have individuals that consistently initiate movement and considered the implications for group cohesion, synchronisation and a measure of preference during a choice test. In all groups included in the analyses, there were ducks that initiated more movements than the rest, and this trend was stronger when leading towards areas providing resources such as pools. Also, more ducks preferentially followed the first initiator (birds initiating most movements within a group) into the bathing area. Group cohesion was higher in groups that frequently had the same individual initiating movement. The number of followers following the ducks that initiated most movements was associated with the measure of preference (time spent at preferred area, as a proportion of total time spent at any area) but the number of movements initiated by these individuals was not. These results highlight the need to consider the effects of initiators and group‐cohesive forces when conducting choice tests in groups of animals.  相似文献

Three groups of mice were infected with Toxoplasma and used for behavioral testing using a Y-maze. One group was infected when adult and two groups congenitally, one of these born to dams infected during gestation, the other to dams chronically infected prior to mating. In an initial habituation period each mouse was exposed to a black arm and stem of the maze, entrance to a white arm being blocked by a transparent door. In a subsequent free-choice trial both arms were black and the mouse was free to explore all parts of the maze. During both periods infected mice were more active than controls. Infected mice engaged in less grooming behavior indicative of less approach-avoidance conflict than controls prior to entry into a choice arm at the beginning of the free-choice trial. Infected mice spent more time in the familiar than in the novel (previously blocked) arm during the free-choice trial; conversely, uninfected mice spent more time in the novel than in the familiar arm. It is suggested that the reported behavioural changes would lead to dissemination of the infection in the environment by ultimately making infected mouse intermediate hosts more susceptible to predation by domestic cats, the definitive hosts of Toxoplasma.  相似文献

In the present EM study, we investigate the retina of Belone belone , a visually-orientated marine predator living close to the water surface. In the duplex retina, four morphologically different cone types are observed: unequal and equal double cones, long single cones and triple cones. In the light-adapted state, five different cone patterns occur: row, twisted row, square, pentagonal and hexagonal patterns. High double cone densities are found ventro-nasally, ventro-temporally and dorso-temporally. Throughout the retina the double cone/single cone ratio is 2 : 1, in the ventral part, however, a 1 : 1 ratio occurs. In the vitreous body we found a curtain-like intraocular septum dividing the retina into two morphologically different regions. In most areas of the dark-adapted retina the cone patterns are absent at the ellipsoid level, with long single cones standing more vitreally in the light path than double cones. The mosaics are retained, however, in the outer nuclear layer. Typical dark adaptation, i.e. the retinomotor movements of the retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors in response to the dark adaptation (light change) is not present in the peripheral ventral and parts of the central ventral area. In both regions we found a twisted row pattern of cones having a vitreal position. The findings are discussed with respect to the photic habitat and feeding habits of this species.  相似文献

In Idotea baltica, a marine isopod that lives and feeds on the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus, microhabitat choice differs between sexes so that males are found more often than females on the light-coloured and exposed apical parts of the alga. We investigated how the requirements of avoiding visual predators and feeding were related to microhabitat choice in relation to diurnal and life-cycle stage in males and females. Faced with a choice between an apical and a basal piece of the alga, females spent more time than males on the basal piece, but this difference was not due to food choice. Faced with a choice between a dark, concealing and a light, exposing background, the preference for a dark background was stronger at day than at night, and stronger in females than in males. This suggests that a sex difference in the importance of avoiding visual predators can explain the sex difference in microhabitat choice. Further, the preference for a dark background and night feeding both increased with age, suggesting that feeding is increasingly subordinated to the need to avoid visual predators. Our experiment found no effect of the presence of the opposite sex on microhabitat choice. Our results support the hypothesis that the sexes trade off feeding against predation risk differently, presumably because growth is more important to males than to females, which have more to gain by protection and therefore spend more time on the lower parts of the alga. Rats with electrolytic lesions of the medial part of the nucleus accumbens, comprising the shell region, were compared to sham-operated rats in tests of exploration in a T-maze, in a hole-board, and in an elevated (+)-maze and in a test of water maze spatial learning. Rats with medial nucleus accumbens lesions had higher choice latencies than sham-operated controls during the beginning of the spontaneous alternation test. A higher number of hole pokes was found in the lesioned group, but only during the beginning of the second day of testing. In the elevated (+)-maze, lesioned rats had a higher number of closed and total arm entries and spent more time in the center region. The lesioned group did not differ from the control group for the number of alternations in the T-maze, for horizontal and vertical motor activity in the hole-board, and for acquisition or reversal of spatial learning in the Morris water maze. These results indicate that lesions of the medial nucleus accumbens slowed down decision time during spontaneous alternation testing and increased exploration in a time and test-specific manner without altering acquisition of a reference memory task.  相似文献

Natural exploration of complex visual scenes depends on saccadic eye movements toward important locations. Saccade targeting is thought to be mediated by a retinotopic map that represents the locations of salient features. In this report, we demonstrate that extrastriate ventral area V4 contains a retinotopic salience map that guides exploratory eye movements during a naturalistic free viewing visual search task. In more than half of recorded cells, visually driven activity is enhanced prior to saccades that move the fovea toward the location previously occupied by a neuron's spatial receptive field. This correlation suggests that bottom-up processing in V4 influences the oculomotor planning process. Half of the neurons also exhibit top-down modulation of visual responses that depends on search target identity but not visual stimulation. Convergence of bottom-up and top-down processing streams in area V4 results in an adaptive, dynamic map of salience that guides oculomotor planning during natural vision.  相似文献

In nonhuman primate groups that utilize crop and food-raiding strategies, the inclusion of human food in the diet can have a pervasive impact on the activity budget. Human food is usually of higher quality and energy per unit than wild food. Thus, metabolic demands may be reached sooner on a human food diet, which in turn leads to improved foraging efficiency. In particular, a reduction in time spent feeding is associated with an increase in time spent resting. We investigated changes in time budget in a group of vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops pygerthrus) living in a tourist and cultivated area of Entebbe, Uganda (Zoo group). Saj collected 123 hr of focal observations on 17 individuals. Human food constituted half of the diet of Zoo group. Access to human food resulted in a high proportion of time resting and a low proportion of time feeding. The group had a small average daily range and a small home range in relation to other reports on unprovisioned groups. The time budget differences suggest that the juveniles spent more time moving and feeding and less time resting than adults did, and that adult females were more social than adult males were. These patterns have been observed in both provisioned and unprovisioned vervet groups. In contrast to a report from an unprovisioned group (Harrison, 1983), lactating females in this provisioned situation were able to maintain feeding and activity levels similar to those of other adults. However, adult females spent significantly less time consuming human food than juveniles did. We suggest that the risk associated with human food consumption may explain the low consumption of human food by females with dependent offspring. The differences may also reflect the different nutritional requirements of lactating females or the tendency for juveniles to be more exploratory than other group members.  相似文献

(1) The relation between the membrane potential and phosphorylation was studied in chloroplasts rapidly prepared from illuminated spinach leaves (light chloroplasts) and from dark-adapted leaves (dark chloroplasts). Light chloroplasts had a higher ATP hydrolysis activity than dark chloroplasts. (2) In the presence of ADP or ATP, a rapidly decaying phase of the field-indicating 518 nm absorbance change with a half-time of 15 ms became apparent in addition to the slow phase with a half-time of more than 300 ms in either type of chloroplast. Under these conditions, light chloroplasts showed a larger rapid phase than dark chloroplasts. (3) The rapid phase was suppressed by dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and was assumed to reflect the dissipation of membrane potential due to proton movements inside the CF1-CF0 ATP synthetase. Seasonal photoperiod has impact on the physiology of many plants and animals. Short days related with the winter are often associated with changes in activity patterns and, in humans, with some mood disorders. Natural changes related with seasonality occur gradually and such approach has to be considered when studying animal models in laboratory conditions. In the present work, we studied if gradual changes from light–dark cycles 12:12 h to short (08:16) or long days (16:08) have a significant effect upon the locomotor activity profile and some anxiety- and depression-like behaviours in the gerbil Meriones unguiculatus. Locomotor activity was recorded by means of infrared light beams. Once adapted to experimental photoperiod, gerbils were used for elevated plus maze (EPM) or forced swim test (FST). Our results indicate that in 12:12, a clear bimodal pattern associated with light transitions was present. When exposed to long days, gerbils increased their total locomotor activity and the bimodal profile persisted. When in short days, locomotor activity decreased and no rhythm was noted. Behavioural assays on EPM and FST indicated that exposition to short days induce in the gerbils an anxiety and depressive-like behaviour, reducing the time spent in open arms and increasing the time of immobilizations. We conclude that short photoperiod affects negatively the locomotor activity daily patterns and mood behaviour in anxiety and depressive way in the Mongolian gerbil.  相似文献
