Studies of the life cycle of cultured Dermatophagoides farinae found that after an initial mating D. farinae females lived for 63.3 ± 64.6 (SD) dafter their egg production period ended .The long period after cessation of egg production for D. farinae suggested D. farinae females could mate multiple times and produce eggs continuously for a longer period. The purpose of this study was to determine if female D. farinae could mate at least two times, and subsequently increase the production of viable eggs over a longer period of time compared to a single mating. Female D. farinae were randomly selected from thriving cultures and isolated in cages. When the females had ceased to lay eggs a male was added to the cage. Fifty-seven percent of the isolated females mated again and produced a second batch of viable eggs. In natural or culture populations, females have continuous availability of males. Therefore, in another experiment, females that emerged from the tritonymphal stages were continuously exposed to fresh males and fecundity and lengths of the reproductive and post reproductive periods were determined. These females had a 11 d longer reproductive period and produced 30.7% more eggs compared to females that only mated one time after they emerged from the tritonymphal stage. However, the post reproductive period was still long (58.6 ± 11.4 [SE] d) the significance of which is not clear. In conclusion, this study revealed that D. farinae females are capable of more than one successful mating that results in increased egg production compared to that of a single mating. It is likely that females mate multiple times in natural and culture populations. It was observed that females actively attract males during the reproductive period but not afterward even though she continues to live a long time. Females of the yellow swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus, were reared in the laboratory. They were divided into four groups held under different mating conditions: nonmating (virgin) and mated once, twice, and three times. The number of eggs in the ovaries was counted by dissection. Virgin females produced increasing numbers of mature eggs, up to about 30, in the week following emergence. When the female had mated once, the number of mature eggs was significantly higher than that of virgin females by the second day after emergence. However, the double- and triplemated females did not increase the number of eggs in each state further than the singlemated females. The double-mated females deposited significantly more eggs than the singlemated females in the laboratory. The triplemated females also deposited more eggs on the day after the third mating than the doublemated females. Thus, multiple matings increased the number of eggs deposited. The change in the hatchability and the morphology of the spermatophore in the bursa copulatrix suggested that the sperm from the last mating had precedence.  相似文献

Summary Immature ovaries ofDrosophila mercatorum were injected into young larvae and into adult males ofD. mercatorum, D. melanogaster, D. hydei, D. virilis, andZaprionius vittiger. These homo- and heteroplastic transplantations allow normal vitellogenesis to occur in the donor ovary. By SDS gel electrophoresis, we identified the major species-specific yolk proteins of mature eggs (stage 14) which were exclusively of donor-specific origin. Other experiments withD. hydei andZ. vittiger showed that, when females were used as hosts, the host-specific yolk proteins became incorporated into the donor eggs. When two immature ovaries, one ofD. mercatorum and one ofD. hydei, were co-cultured in males, again only the donor-specific yolk proteins were found in the mature eggs implying that these yolk proteins were not released into the host hemolymph.A parthenogenetic strain ofD. mercatorum was used to demonstrate the ability of transplanted immature ovaries to produce viable eggs which can give rise to fertile adults. The role of the species-specific yolk proteins is discussed with respect to the dual origin of these proteins during normal vitellogenesis, i.e., an autonomous synthesis within the ovary itself in addition to the well-known production by the fat body. Further experiments with pupae as hosts indicate that even in the absence of juvenile hormone and in the presence of high doses of ecdysone, vitellogenesis can proceed within the donor ovary.Based on these experiments, a new hyopthesis on the hormonal control of vitellogenesis inDrosophila is presented. We propose that yolk proteins derived from the fat body are controlled by juvenile hormone, whereas the independent and autonomous vitellogenesis within the ovary itself is controlled by endogenously synthesized ecdysone.  相似文献

Summary In the heterozygousF/f female-producing females of the strictly monogenic blowflyChrysomya rufifacies the gene product of the dominant or epistatic female sex realizerF which causes sexpredetermination is thought to be synthesized either by cells of the germ line (oocytes, nurse cells or oogonia) or by somatic cells and then transferred into the oocytes. To determine the possible site of synthesis, reciprocal transplantations were made of prepupal ovaries between female-producing (thelygenic; t) and male-producing (arrhenogenic; a) females ofChrysomya rufifacies. In another series of experiments prepupal host females of the wild t-type and a-type were each provided with one additional ovary either from a0type (f/f) or a t-type (F/f) prepupa (neither were distinguishable by their phenotypes). In all these experiments the donor females were marked by the recessive sex-linked mutation white (w/w); white eyes, white Malpighian tubules). In a considerable number of cases the implanted ovaries were in contact with the host's own oviduct and grew normally, but the rate of hatched adults was somewhat reduced. Crosses between such host females andw/w males (f/f) produced female or male offspring with white eyes from the eggs of the implantedw/w ovary, as well as flies with wild-type eyes (+/w) which had developed in the host's own ovaries. In all cases so far examined, the genetically thelygenic (or arrhenogenic) host females with an additional ovary implanted from an arrhenogenic (thelygenic) donor, produced progeny of both sexes: sons (daughters) from the eggs of the donor's ovary and daugthers (sons) from the eggs of the host's own gonads. These results demonstrate that the ovaries of the t-females ofChrysomya rufifacies at least from the early prepupal stage, are autonomous for the product of theF gene. Transplantations of the premordial germ cells (pole cells) are planned to find out whether the predeterminingF gene product is synthesized before the prepupal stage, by somatic cells outside the ovary or by somatic (follicle) cells of the ovary itself.Dedicated to Professor Dr. Hans Bauer with gratitude in commemoration of his 75th birthday  相似文献

At eclosion, the ovaries of female Corn earworm Heliothis zea do not contain mature eggs. Virgin-unfed females produced approximately 400 mature eggs in 8 days; mating or feeding doubled this number, and mating plus feeding more than tripled it. Females allatectomized or decapitated at day O matured few eggs. Egg production was restored by implantation of active corpora allata (CA) or by treatment with the juvenile hormone (JH) analogue methoprene at day 0. 20-Hydroxyecdysone, on the other hand, had no effect. Females in which the CA had been denervated or in which the median neurosecretory cells of the brain had been ablated at day O produced fewer eggs than sham-operated animals. These results indicate that egg maturation is controlled by JH and that continuous input from the brain is required for sustained CA activity for maintaining a high rates of egg maturation. The rate of JH biosynthesis by CA in vitro was determined with a radiochemical assay. The major hormones produced were JH-II and JH-III with small quantities of JH-I. The rates of JH synthesis were similar in all experimental groups which may indicate that the in vitro rate of JH synthesis does not reflect the actual state of CA activity in the female.  相似文献

Feeding, reproductive and locomotor activities of fourDrosophila species were studied under short and long daylengths at 15°C. A short daylength induced firm reproductive diapause in experimental strains ofD. subauraria andD. triauraria from northern Japan, but very shallow diapause in those ofD. lutescens andD. rufa from southern Japan. A subtropical strain ofD. triauraria had no diapause. The influence of diapause on feeding activity was detected only in aged (> 12 day old) females; that is, the feeding activity was lower in diapausing females than in non-diapausing ones. Females that do not produce eggs would not require so much energy. On the other hand, young adults of the study species exhibited a high feeding activity and rapidly increased bodyweight irrespective of sex and the diapause state. They would need nutrition to build up their adult body. In males, the feeding activity decreased with age irrespective of the diapause state. Males would not require so much energy for reproductive activity. Diapausing males became heavier than non-diapausing males, perhaps because they accumulated triacylglycerols in fat bodies. However, female bodyweight did not differ by the diapause state, perhaps because diapausing females accumulated triacylglycerols and reproducing females had eggs in their ovaries. InD. triauraria, diapausing individuals exhibited somewhat lower locomotor activity than non-diapausing ones.  相似文献

Induction of diapausing amictic eggs in Synchaeta pectinata   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Amictic females of a clone of S. pectinata from Star Lake (Norwich, Vermont) may produce diapausing as well as non-diapausing (subitaneous) eggs. The proportion of diapausing eggs produced in cultures was unaffected by temperature (12 vs 19 °C) or rotifer population density (minima of 0.33 vs 3 ind. ml–1) at 19 °C. However, at 19 °C this proportion was higher in cultures maintained at a low food level suppressing reproduction (5 × 103 cells ml–1 Cryptomonas erosa) than in those maintained at a high food level (2 × 104 cells ml–1); the treatment effect was marginally significant (p=0.067). Consistent with the effect of low food availability, a period of starvation was very effective in inducing the development of diapausing eggs. None of 19 females cultured individually from hatching at 19 °C on C. erosa (2 × 104 cells ml–1) in 1-ml volumes produced any diapausing eggs in 4 days (0 out of 349 eggs), while 13 out of 16 females subjected to a 15-hour starvation period 6 hours after birth produced one or more diapausing eggs during that time (34% of the 158 eggs produced by the 16 females were diapausing). Diapausing eggs produced and left at 19 °C hatched after 4 to 13 days. Those produced in cultures with a low food level took significantly longer to hatch (9.7 days) than those produced in cultures with a high food level (8.1 days) (p=0.022). In natural communities, S. pectinata should be able to respond directly and rapidly to poor food conditions by producing eggs that undergo an obligatory dormant period before resuming development.  相似文献

Reproduction in Varroa jacobsoni occurs only in cells of the capped honey bee brood. Female mites were sampled at different times after cell sealing and ovaries containing a vitellogenic oocyte of the first gonocycle were examined under an electron microscope. It was found that the cytoplasmic connection between the lyrate organ and the oocyte persists far into the vitellogenic growth phase. In addition, a large amount of yolk material is taken up from the haemolymph. All ultrastructural features characteristic of vitellogenesis, such as microvilli, coated pits, vesicles and growing yolk platelets, are present. If more than four Varroa females live in an overcrowded brood cell, they appear to be in stress conditions and their vitellogenic oocytes may become atretic. Alterations typical for oocyte degradation and oosorption were observed in such situations.  相似文献

Summary Our report presents an analysis of the development and dynamics of the female germ line inDrosophila. Females were produced that were mosaic either for attached-X chromosomes and a ring-X (triplo-X-diplo-X), or for and a marked Y-chromosome . The germ-line and genitalia of these females were analysed by direct microscopic observation or by examination of the progeny.Eggs derived from triplo-X germ cells were hardly capable of supporting development, with most of the zygotes dying during embryonic development. The analysis of the germ line was therefore carried out mainly by direct observation of histochemically stained developing oocytes in the ovaries of mosaic females. The total germ cell population of both ovaries of a female was mosaic in 22–29% of the tested animals. From this frequency of mosaicism we estimated the number of functional primordial germ cells to be betwen 3 and 6 cells at the blastoderm stage. At this stage the cell lineages for the left and right ovary are not yet separated. The germ cell population of individual ovarioles was frequently mosaic which shows that the few stem cells in an ovariole are recruited as a group and are not clonal descendants of a single ancestor cell per ovariole. An analysis of the sequential pattern of oocyte-nurse cell cysts in mosaic ovarioles revealed that neighbouring cysts tend to be of the same genotype. This suggests that the stem cells of the adult ovaries preferentially divide in bursts, one of them giving rise to two, three and sometimes even more cystocytes in a row.In addition, the foci for lethality and sterility of the triplo-X condition were determined. Non-mosaic triplo-X females (metafemales) are hardly viable and invariably sterile. Using our mosaics, the focus forlethality could be mapped to a region very near the ventral prothoracic discs. The focus forsterility resides in the genitalia, since flies with triplo-X genitalia never laid any eggs, regardless of the genotype of their ovaries.  相似文献

The courtship behavior and the effects of courtship song in inter- and intraspecific crosses were studied in the four sympatric species of the Drosophila auraria complex: D. auraria, D. biauraria, D. subauraria, and D. triauraria. Orientation, tapping, and vibration (the repertoires of male courtship) were observed in both inter- and intraspecific crosses, suggesting that signals from heterospecific females were enough to elicit such male behaviors. The crossability tests with wingless or winged heterospecific males (tests for wing effects) revealed that winged heterospecific males copulated less than wingless ones in all four species but not all the pairwise cases. Since the crossability tests with aristaless females (deaf) or normal females showed essentially the same results as the tests for wing effects, we concluded that the sound produced by wing vibration plays an important role and that the wing movement itself is less important. These findings suggest that courtship songs are of great importance in mate discrimination and the sexual isolation between the species of this complex.  相似文献

Summary Drosophila melanogaster embryos were injected before the blastoderm stage with conditioned media from several male Burkitt's lymphoma human cell lines and the Daudi cell line. Such injections do not have any effect on the male genital apparatus or on the female tract. The Daudi conditioned medium modifies the ovarian morphogenesis of the flies and the rudimentary ovaries obtained look like nymphal gonads. Moreover, they have a drastically reduced number of germ cells. The ovaries that looked functional contain numerous necrotic germ cells and the mean number of ovarioles per fly is significantly smaller than that of the controls. The abnormalities observed resemble the results of experimental and genetic lack of germ cells. They disappear at very high dilution (1×10–6).  相似文献

The sexual isolation among the related species Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans and D. mauritiana is asymmetrical. While D. mauritiana males mate well with both D. melanogaster and D. simulans females, females of D. mauritiana discriminate strongly against males of these two species. Similarly, D. simulans males mate with D. melanogaster females but the reciprocal cross is difficult. Interspecific crosses between several populations of the three species were performed to determine if (i) males and females of the same species share a common sexual isolation genetic system, and (ii) males (or females) use the same genetic system to discriminate against females (or males) of the other two species. Results indicate that although differences in male and female isolation depend on the populations tested, the isolation behaviour between a pair of species is highly correlated despite the variations. However, the rank order of the isolation level along the populations was not correlated in both sexes, which suggests that different genes act in male and female sexual isolation. Neither for males nor for females, the isolation behaviour of one species was paralleled in the other two species, which indicates that the genetic systems involved in this trait are species-pair specific. The implications of these results are discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The zoophytophagous predator Dicyphustamaninii Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) hasbeen successfully reared for more than fivegenerations on a meat-based diet, and in theabsence of a plant as a substrate foroviposition and feeding. We compared thepredation efficiency of D. tamaniniiproduced on this diet with those rearedconventionally on Ephestia kuehniellaeggs (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) andtobacco plants. Their performances wereevaluated on two prey, the greenhouse whiteflyTrialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood(Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) and the cotton aphidAphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae). Their tendency to cannibalisticbehaviour was also evaluated.Nymphs of D. tamaninii produced on themeat diet consumed a similar number ofgreenhouse whitefly pupae after 24 and 48 hoursto nymphs reared by the conventional method.Diet-reared females consumed significantly morewhitefly pupae after 24 and 48 hours thancontrol females. When the cotton aphid wasoffered, diet-reared D. tamaninii nymphsand females consumed similar numbers of prey tocontrol D. tamaninii. There was nosignificant increase in cannibalistic behaviourof diet-reared D. tamaninii after 3 and 5days of interaction. These results show that, after fivegenerations, the predation efficiency and thetendency to cannibalism of meat-reared D.tamaninii is similar to that ofconventionally-reared individuals.  相似文献

Summary. We investigated demographic, morphological and histological aspects of Distylaphis foliorum, a gall-forming nipponaphidine aphid from Java, Indonesia, whose first instar nymphs had been reported to have enlarged forelegs and attack other insects. The gall inhabitants of D. foliorum consisted of two discrete populations; one developing normally and the other remaining at the first instar. Morphometric analysis identified two types of first instar nymphs; nymphs with relatively long forelegs and slender abdomen, and nymphs with relatively short forelegs and fat abdomen. The former nymphs were found from both young galls and mature galls, while the latter nymphs were from young galls only. Histological analysis strongly suggested a reproductive division in the first instar. In the former nymphs from mature galls, ovaries and mycetomes were degenerate and replaced by well-developed fat body cells. These results indicated that D. foliorum has a morphologically differentiated sterile soldier caste in the first instar. This study is the first report of a soldier caste with morphological and reproductive division in the aphid tribe Nipponaphidini, and suggests that highly specialized soldier castes have evolved at least four times in aphids.Received 25 June 2004; revised 24 September 2004; accepted 11 October 2004.  相似文献

The ethyl methane sulfonate-induced mutation, fs(1)1621, resides at 11.7 on the genetic map and within segment 4F1-5A1 of the cytological map of the X chromosome. When homozygous, fs(1)1621 renders females semisterile but has no effect on their viability; nor does it affect the viability or fertility of hemizygous males. Heterozygous females are fertile and have cytologically normal ovaries. The ovaries of homozygous females first produce normal oocytes, which, if fertilized, can develop into adult males or females. After this period, ovarian chambers containing only pseudonurse cells are formed, and finally mutant germaria produce only tumors. These contain hundreds to thousands of cells that appear to be derived from germarial cystocytes, because they occasionally form clones of interconnected cells and also can differentiate into endopolyploid pseudonurse cells. Raising the temperature speeds the rate at which tumors form; lowering it increases the probability of pseudonurse cell differentiation. Df(1)C159 includes fs(1)1621. The pattern of ovarian chamber production is more temperature sensitive in hemizygous females than in homozygous ones. The morphology of hemizygous tumors and the number of dividing cells within them also differ from homozygotes. These observations support the hypothesis that fs(1)1621 is producing a product, that less is produced by one gene than by two, and that the product plays a role in the mitosis and cytokinesis of ovarian cystocytes.  相似文献

Summary It is known from previous work that juvenile hormone (JH) is required to initiate vitellogenin uptake into maturing oocytes ofDrosophila melanogaster, but additional requirements for this hormone during oocyte maturation have not been fully understood. To determine if early vitellogenic oocytes (stages 8 and 9) require JH for continued development, these oocytes were transplanted toDrosophila female and male hosts which were rendered deficient in JH by three methods. Implanted stage 9 and usually stage 8 oocytes were found to degenerate in JH-deficient hosts unless ZR-515, a JH analogue, was applied to the host shortly after implantation. These results were confirmed during in situ ovary development. JH deficiency was produced in gravid females, and ovaries examined at subsequent time intervals were found to be deficient in stage 8–10 oocytes as early as 6 h after treatment. Degenerating oocytes corresponding to these stages were commonly found. ZR-515 prevented oocyte degeneration during at least the first 8 h and continued to support stage 8–10 oocyte development 24 h after application to these females. The results suggest that JH is required not only for initiation but also for continuation of vitellogenin uptake and oocyte development.  相似文献

Four species of the Drosophila virilis group, D. montana, D. littoralis, D. lummei, and D. ezoana, occur sympatrically in several locations in northern Europe. Courtship interactions between the flies of the three first-mentioned species were observed at malt baits in Kemi, northern Finland, to find out how the flies of different species recognize conspecific individuals and how interspecific courtships differ from intraspecific ones in the wild. Intraspecific courtships (including females of different reproductive stages) and interspecific courtships were also videotaped and analyzed in laboratory. In the wild the males courted both conspecific and allospecific females, even though the species varied in how much the males were attracted to females of different species. Interspecific courtships usually broke off when the male touched the female or when the male and/or the female vibrated his/her wings, producing acoustic cues. In the laboratory males courted conspecific females irrespective of the reproductive stage of the female, even though the courtships directed toward immature and fertilized females usually included only orienting and touching (no licking and singing). D. littoralis, and very rarely D. montana and D. lummei, males courted also allospecific females. In the few interspecific courtships between these three species, where the male proceeded to singing, females responded to male singing by vibrating their wings. This ended the courtship. It is suggested that both the chemical cues affecting female attractivity and the acoustic signals of males and females, which are produced by wing vibration, function in maintaining sexual isolation between these three species.  相似文献

Semelparity is prevalent in arthropod species that exhibit maternal care. Previous hypotheses postulated that long‐term maternal care constrains future reproduction in females, leading to the evolution of semelparity. Nevertheless, females may occasionally lose all or part of their offspring because of predation or other causes. Where females lose the first egg mass for any reason, the potential for females to produce an additional egg mass could be adaptive. This potential may be found widely among semelparous arthropods as a conditional strategy. We tested this hypothesis using the crab spider Lysiteles coronatus whose females guard their egg mass against predators. L. coronatus females did not consume food during the 40‐d guarding period; this resulted in a 30.2% loss in their weight. When the females were separated from their eggs immediately after oviposition and were provided with food, they resumed feeding and their ovaries redeveloped. Dissection of guarding females indicated that their ovaries developed temporarily during egg guarding and that the developed ovaries were subsequently reabsorbed. These results suggest that the females maintain the potential to produce a second egg mass in case of egg loss, but that this potential declines towards the end of the guarding period. Field observations showed that a small fraction of the females oviposited in late July, when most females had completed egg guarding. The size of the late broods was similar to the oocyte numbers that we found in the females fed in the laboratory. This result suggests that a few females produced a second egg mass after they had lost the first one. Thus, we suggest that facultative second oviposition in L. coronatus females has evolved as an adaptation to egg loss, and that the development of ovaries during the guarding period is intrinsically programmed for compensatory oviposition.  相似文献

Summary Mature eggs dissected from ovaries of unmated females of Athalia rosae (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), if placed on a filter-paper soaked with distilled water, are activated and develop to haploid males. Occasionally, however, diploid females develop from these artificially activated eggs. Treatment of mature unfertilized eggs dissected from diploid females with ice-cold temperatures immediately before activation and with a high temperature (36° C) upon and immediately after activation resulted in the production of diploid males, diploid females, triploid females and gynandromorphs at high frequency. The same treatment of mature unfertilized eggs dissected from triploid females resulted in the production of only triploid survivors. These results, together with the results on the segregation of a marker mutation, yellow fatbody (yfb), appear to indicate that meiotic divisions were complete in the treated eggs, and that all four nuclei became potentially capable of participating in development with or without automictic fusion.Studies on the sawfly, Athalia rosae (Insecta, Hymenoptera, Tenthredinidae), part V  相似文献

Some aspects of the reproductive biology of two hermit crabs Pagurus alatus (Fabricius, 1775) and P. excavatus (Herbst, 1791) were studied. Specimens were collected monthly from April 2000 to March 2001 on the continental shelf and the upper-middle slope off the Southwestern coasts of Sardinia, in the central-western Mediterranean Sea. Crab size (minimum and maximum shield length) was 1.7 and 9.5 mm for 1150 females of P. alatus; 4.0 and 10.4 mm for 347 females of P. excavatus, respectively. Females of P. alatus with ripe ovaries were only found in February-April and ovigerous females were observed throughout the year except in March, with the highest incidence in summer. Females of P. excavatus with fully developed ovaries were collected during all months of the year reaching a peak from April to June. Ovigerous females of P. excavatus occurred throughout the year and the main spawning period occurred in March and April. Fecundity of both species was calculated to assess seasonal variation of reproductive intensity and was positively correlated with the size of the individuals. Monthly fecundity did not reveal significant differences in P. alatus ovigerous females, whereas P. excavatus exhibited significant differences in monthly fecundity depending on the time of year. Difference in fecundity among P. alatus and P. excavatus can be related to the size of the ovigerous females and species of hermit crab, but their different reproductive strategies suggest that they are specifically related to different environmental conditions.  相似文献
