Occurrence of synaptonemal complexes and recombination nodules in a meiotic race of Meloidogyne hapla and their absence in a mitotic race

The early prophase of the first maturation division of oocytes is compared in two races of Meloidogyne hapla Chitwood. Light microscopic analysis suggested that chromatin of both Race A (meiotic parthenogenetic; n=17) and Race B (mitotic parthenogenetic; 3n=45) behaves similarly during early stages of maturation of oocytes (Triantaphyllou, 1966). Electron microscopic analysis shows that synaptonemal complexes and recombination nodules are observed at pachytene in Race A, but are absent in corresponding oocytes of Race B. Cylindrical granular complexes present in the cytoplasm at prepachytene stages are intimately associated with the nucleus at pachytene in Race A, but are absent in Race B.Paper number 5599 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, Raleigh, North Carolina 27650     

Growth of Pseudomonas phaseolicola in susceptible and in resistant bean plants

Race 1 of Pseudomonas phaseolicola introduced into leaves of susceptible Canadian Wonder bean plants multiplied logarithmically for 3–5 days, reaching final populations about 10⁵–10⁶ times the original. In resistant Red Mexican, Race 1 multiplied less rapidly to give final populations about 10²–10³ times the original. Race 2 behaved in susceptible Red Mexican as did Race 1 in Canadian Wonder. Macroscopic symptoms appeared in leaves when bacterial numbers reached their maxima. When introduced into the cotyledonary node Race 1 moved more rapidly upwards than downwards, and more rapidly and farther in Canadian Wonder than in Red Mexican. But even in Canadian Wonder the bacterium appeared only sporadically above the node of the first compound leaf. It could be isolated only rarely from chlorotic haloes around necrotic areas in leaves, or from chlorotic leaves not carrying lesions. Fewer lesions developed and the bacteria multiplied less in older than in younger leaves. Addition of glucose and casein hydrolysate to inocula of Race 1, separately or together, had little effect on growth in Canadian Wonder or Red Mexican, and the bacterium grew equally well in extracts of susceptible and of resistant plants. Preinoculation of leaves with an avirulent race reduced the number of lesions caused by a virulent race inoculated later, and also reduced growth of this race in leaves of a susceptible variety.

The healthy heart race: a short-duration, hands-on activity in cardiovascular physiology for museums and science festivals

The "Healthy Heart Race" activity provides a hands-on demonstration of cardiovascular function suitable for lay audiences. It was field tested during the United States of America Science and Engineering Festival held in Washington, DC, in October 2010. The basic equipment for the activity consisted of lengths of plastic tubing, a hand pump, collection containers, clamps, and simulated blood prepared by tinting water with red food coloring. Student participants were first asked to experience the effort required to pump through an unaltered tube. A presenter then applied a strong clamp that pinched each tube downstream from the pump, and students were asked to pump against the increased resistance. The students' observations were then used as the basis for discussions of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease with the presenters. Distribution of informative postcards during the 2 days of the festival indicated that at least 2,500 students completed the Healthy Heart Race activity. Our experiences to date suggest that the Healthy Heart Race activity can be accomplished effectively in the high-volume, high-distraction environment of a science fair or museum.     

Races of the Barley Root-Knot Nematode,Meloidogyne naasi. II. Developmental Rates

The developmental rates of the five newly designated races of Meloidogyne naasi were compared on barley, oat and sorghum. Races 1, 2, 3 and 4 developed and reproduced on both barley and oat but not on sorghum. Race 5 developed and reproduced readily on sorghum but poorly on oat. A more rapid rate of development of Race 5 on both barley and sorghum than that of other races on barley demonstrated that Race 5 has a shorter life cycle than do Races 1-4.
