Huang, W., R. T. Yen, M. McLaurine, and G. Bledsoe.Morphometry of the human pulmonary vasculature.J. Appl. Physiol. 81(5):2123-2133, 1996.The morphometric data on the branching patternand vascular geometry of the human pulmonary arterial and venous treesare presented. Arterial and venous casts were prepared by the siliconeelastomer casting method. Three recent innovations are used to describethe vascular geometry: the diameter-defined Strahler ordering model isused to assign branching orders, the connectivity matrix is used todescribe the connection of blood vessels from one order to another, anda distinction between vessel segments and vessel elements is used toexpress the series-parallel feature of the pulmonary vessels. A totalof 15 orders of arteries were found between the main pulmonary arteryand the capillaries in the left lung and a total of 15 orders of veinsbetween the capillaries and the left atrium in the right lung. Theelemental and segmental data are presented. The morphometric data arethen used to compute the total cross-sectional areas, blood volumes, and fractal dimensions in the pulmonary arterial and venous trees.

A proper analysis of blood flow is contingent upon accurate modelling of the branching pattern and vascular geometry of the network of interest. It is challenging to reconstruct the entire vascular network of any organ experimentally, in particular the pulmonary vasculature, because of its very high number of vessels, complexity of the branching pattern and poor accessibility in vivo. The objective of our research is to develop an innovative approach for the reconstruction of the full pulmonary vascular tree from available morphometric data. Our method consists of the use of morphometric data on those parts of the pulmonary vascular tree that are too small to reconstruct by medical imaging methods. This method is a three-step technique that reconstructs the entire pulmonary arterial tree down to the capillary bed. Vessels greater than 2 mm are reconstructed from direct volume and surface analysis using contrast-enhanced computed tomography. Vessels smaller than 2 mm are reconstructed from available morphometric and distensibility data and rearranged by applying Murray's laws. Implementation of morphometric data to reconstruct the branching pattern and applying Murray's laws to every vessel bifurcation simultaneously leads to an accurate vascular tree reconstruction. The reconstruction algorithm generates full arterial tree topography down to the ?rst capillary bifurcation. Geometry of each order of the vascular tree is generated separately to minimize the construction and simulation time. The node-to-node connectivity along with the diameter and length of every vessel segment is established and order numbers, according to the diameter-de?ned Strahler system, are assigned. In conclusion, the present model provides a morphological foundation for future analysis of blood flow in the pulmonary circulation  相似文献

Morphometry of cat's pulmonary arterial tree   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Morphometic data of the pulmonary artery in the cat's right lung are presented. Silicone elastomer casts of cat's right lung were made, and measured, counted and analyzed. The Strahler system is used to describe the branching pattern of the arterial vascular tree. These data are needed for any quantitative approach to the study of the pulmonary circulation. For all the pulmonary blood vessels of the cat lying between the main pulmonary artery and the capillary beds, there are a total of 10 orders of vessels in the right upper lobe, 9 orders of vessels in the right middle lobe and 11 orders of vessels in the right lower lobe. The ratio of the number of branches in successive orders of vessels or the branching ratio, is 3.58. The corresponding average diameter ratio is 1.72, whereas the average length ratio is 1.81.  相似文献

The geometry of the pulmonary arterial tree of six adult dogs was measured by a high-speed, volume-scanning, X-ray tomographic technique. After the dogs were anesthetized a catheter was advanced to the right ventricular outflow tract and 2 mL/kg Renovist contrast agent injected rapidly. During the subsequent pulmonary arterial phase of the angiogram the dogs were scanned. Three-dimensional geometry of the pulmonary arterial tree was measured in terms of vessel segment cross-sectional area, branching angles and interbranch segment lengths along axial pathways. The effect of lung inflation and phase of the cardiac cycle on geometry was shown to be most marked on vessel cross-sectional area. The geometric branching patterns in all dogs were similar. The observed, in-vivo branching pattern behaved somewhat like the branching pattern predicted from optimized models proposed by Murray, Zamir, and Uylings.  相似文献

The branching pattern of the coronary arteries and veins is asymmetric, i.e., many small vessels branch off of a large trunk such that the two daughter vessels at a bifurcation are of unequal diameters and lengths. One important implication of the geometric vascular asymmetry is the dispersion of blood flow at a bifurcation, which leads to large spatial heterogeneity of myocardial blood flow. To document the asymmetric branching pattern of the coronary vessels, we computed an asymmetry ratio for the diameters and lengths of all vessels, defined as the ratio of the daughter diameters and lengths, respectively. Previous data from silicone elastomer cast of the entire coronary vasculature including arteries, arterioles, venules, and veins were analyzed. Data on smaller vessels were obtained from histological specimens by optical sectioning, whereas data on larger vessels were obtained from vascular casts. Asymmetry ratios for vascular areas, volumes, resistances, and flows of the various daughter vessels were computed from the asymmetry ratios of diameters and lengths for every order of mother vessel. The results show that the largest orders of arterial and venous vessels are most asymmetric and the degree of asymmetry decreases toward the smaller vessels. Furthermore, the diameter asymmetry at a bifurcation is significantly larger for the coronary veins (1.7-6.8 for sinus veins) than the corresponding arteries (1.5-5.8 for left anterior descending coronary artery) for orders 2-10, respectively. The reported diameter asymmetry at a bifurcation leads to significant heterogeneity of blood flow at a bifurcation. Hence, the present data quantify the dispersion of blood flow at a bifurcation and are essential for understanding flow heterogeneity in the coronary circulation.  相似文献

The pulsatility of coronary circulation can be accurately simulated on the basis of the measured branching pattern, vascular geometry, and material properties of the coronary vasculature. A Womersley-type mathematical model is developed to analyze pulsatile blood flow in diastole in the absence of vessel tone in the entire coronary arterial tree on the basis of previously measured morphometric data. The model incorporates a constitutive equation of pressure and cross-section area relation based on our previous experimental data. The formulation enables the prediction of the impedance, the pressure distribution, and the pulsatile flow distribution throughout the entire coronary arterial tree. The model is validated by experimental measurements in six diastolic arrested, vasodilated porcine hearts. The agreement between theory and experiment is excellent. Furthermore, the present pulse wave results at low frequency agree very well with previously published steady-state model. Finally, the phase angle of flow is seen to decrease along the trunk of the major coronary artery and primary branches toward the capillary vessels. This study represents the first, most extensive validated analysis of Womersley-type pulse wave transmission in the entire coronary arterial tree down to the first segment of capillaries. The present model will serve to quantitatively test various hypotheses in the coronary circulation under pulsatile flow conditions.  相似文献

An automatic segmentation technique has been developed and applied to two renal micro-computer tomography (CT) images. With the use of a 20-microm voxel resolution image, the arterial and venous trees were segmented for the rat renal vasculature, distinguishing resolving vessels down to 30 microm in radius. A higher resolution 4-microm voxel image of a renal vascular subtree, with vessel radial values down to 10 microm, was segmented. Strahler ordering was applied to each subtree using an iterative scheme developed to integrate information from the two segmented models to reconstruct the complete topology of the entire vascular tree. An error analysis of the assigned orders quantified the robustness of the ordering process for the full model. Radial, length, and connectivity data of the complete arterial and venous trees are reported by order. Substantial parallelism is observed between individual arteries and veins, and the ratio of parallel vessel radii is quantified via a power law. A strong correlation with Murray's Law was established, providing convincing evidence of the "minimum work" hypothesis. Results were compared with theoretical branch angle formulations, based on the principles of "minimum shear force," were inconclusive. Three-dimensional reconstructions of renal vascular trees collected are made freely available for further investigation into renal physiology and modeling studies.  相似文献

Network analysis of an arterial tree   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The arterial tree of a Sprague-Dawley rat was casted and carefully mapped with the aim of comparing its network characteristics with those suggested by the classical model of an arterial tree. It is shown that if the tree is to be measured accurately, the concept of 'whole vessels' on which the classical model is based must be abandoned since such vessels do not actually exist in the network, nor can they be accurately defined. The concept of 'vessel segments' is proposed instead and its use is demonstrated. A total of 1313 vessel segments in the arterial tree of the rat are mapped and divided into well defined 'levels'. The length and diameter of each segment are measured and the distribution and averages of these at different levels are presented as indicators of the branching characteristics of the tree.  相似文献

The elasticity and branching order of noncapillary microscopic blood vessels less than 100 microns diam were studied in human lungs obtained 7-30 h postmortem, using a silicone elastomer method that selectively filled pulmonary arterioles or venules. The lungs were inflated to 10 cmH2O pressure and a gradient of transmural vascular pressure of 0-17 cm H2O, from lobe base to apex, was established in the silicone-filled vascular system. Histological materials were obtained after airway fixation by formaldehyde solution and analyzed for vessel diameter in the branching order of 1, 2, and 3, with the smallest noncapillary vessel designated as order 1, in accord with the Strahler system. The change in vessel diameter within a branching order at different levels of transmural pressure is a derived measure of vascular elasticity expressed as compliance coefficient alpha, alpha Values are 0.128, 0.164, and 0.210 micron/cmH2O or 0.682, 0.472, and 0.354%/cmH2O, respectively, of orders 1-3 for arterioles and 0.187, 0.215, and 0.250 micron/cmH2O or 0.992, 0.612, and 0.424%/cmH2O, respectively, of orders 1-3 for venules. The percent is normalized with D0, which is the value of diameter (D) when the transmural pressure is zero. These data are compared with those for the cat where alpha = 0.274 for similar juxta-alveolar vessels.  相似文献

A hemodynamic analysis of coronary blood flow must be based on the measured branching pattern and vascular geometry of the coronary vasculature. We recently developed a computer reconstruction of the entire coronary arterial tree of the porcine heart based on previously measured morphometric data. In the present study, we carried out an analysis of blood flow distribution through a network of millions of vessels that includes the entire coronary arterial tree down to the first capillary branch. The pressure and flow are computed throughout the coronary arterial tree based on conservation of mass and momentum and appropriate pressure boundary conditions. We found a power law relationship between the diameter and flow of each vessel branch. The exponent is approximately 2.2, which deviates from Murray's prediction of 3.0. Furthermore, we found the total arterial equivalent resistance to be 0.93, 0.77, and 1.28 mmHg.ml(-1).s(-1).g(-1) for the right coronary artery, left anterior descending coronary artery, and left circumflex artery, respectively. The significance of the present study is that it yields a predictive model that incorporates some of the factors controlling coronary blood flow. The model of normal hearts will serve as a physiological reference state. Pathological states can then be studied in relation to changes in model parameters that alter coronary perfusion.  相似文献

In the analysis of arterial branching the classical "cube law' has provided a working model for the relation between the diameter of a blood vessel and the flow which the vessel carries on a long-term basis. The law has shown good agreement with biological data, but questions remain regarding its applicability to all levels of the arterial tree. The present study tests the hypothesis that the cube law may not be valid in the first few generations of the arterial tree, where vessel capacitance and gross anatomy may play important roles. Biological data have shown some support for this hypothesis in the past but the heterogeneity characteristic of past data has not allowed a conclusive test so far. We present new data which have been obtained from the same location on the arterial tree and in sufficient number to make this test possible for the first time. Also, while past tests have been based primarily on correlation of the measured data with an assumed power law, we show here that this can be misleading. The present data allow a simpler test which does not involve correlation and which leads to more direct conclusions. For the vessels surveyed, the results show unequivocally that the relation between diameter and flow is governed by a 'square law' rather than the classical cube law. Coupled with past findings this suggests that the square law may apply at the first few levels of the arterial tree, while the cube law continues from there to perhaps the precapillary levels.  相似文献

Individualized modeling and simulation of blood flow mechanics find applications in both animal research and patient care. Individual animal or patient models for blood vessel mechanics are based on combining measured vascular geometry with a fluid structure model coupling formulations describing dynamics of the fluid and mechanics of the wall. For example, one-dimensional fluid flow modeling requires a constitutive law relating vessel cross-sectional deformation to pressure in the lumen. To investigate means of identifying appropriate constitutive relationships, an automated segmentation algorithm was applied to micro-computerized tomography images from a mouse lung obtained at four different static pressures to identify the static pressure–radius relationship for four generations of vessels in the pulmonary arterial network. A shape-fitting function was parameterized for each vessel in the network to characterize the nonlinear and heterogeneous nature of vessel distensibility in the pulmonary arteries. These data on morphometric and mechanical properties were used to simulate pressure and flow velocity propagation in the network using one-dimensional representations of fluid and vessel wall mechanics. Moreover, wave intensity analysis was used to study effects of wall mechanics on generation and propagation of pressure wave reflections. Simulations were conducted to investigate the role of linear versus nonlinear formulations of wall elasticity and homogeneous versus heterogeneous treatments of vessel wall properties. Accounting for heterogeneity, by parameterizing the pressure/distention equation of state individually for each vessel segment, was found to have little effect on the predicted pressure profiles and wave propagation compared to a homogeneous parameterization based on average behavior. However, substantially different results were obtained using a linear elastic thin-shell model than were obtained using a nonlinear model that has a more physiologically realistic pressure versus radius relationship.  相似文献

Fractal modeling of pulmonary blood flow heterogeneity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The heterogeneity of pulmonary blood flow is not adequately described by gravitational forces alone. We investigated the flow distributions predicted by two fractally branching vascular models to determine how well such networks could explain the observed heterogeneity. The distribution of flow was modeled with a dichotomously branching tree in which the fraction of blood flow from the parent to the daughter branches was gamma and 1-gamma repeatedly at each generation. In one model gamma was held constant throughout the network, and in the other model gamma varied about a mean of 0.5 with a standard deviation of sigma. Both gamma and sigma were optimized in each model for the best fit to pulmonary blood flow data from experimental animals. The predicted relative dispersion of flow from the two model fractal networks produced an excellent fit to the observed data. These fractally branching models relate structure and function of the pulmonary vascular tree and provide a mechanism to describe the spatially correlated distribution of flow and the gravity-independent heterogeneity of blood flow.  相似文献

The morphology of branching trees in general, and of the bronchial tree in particular, can be described in terms of three parameters, the diameter, length and branching ratios. These are the factors by which mean diameter and mean length increase in successive orders towards the trachea, and by which the number of branches increases in successive orders away from the trachea. Orders of branching are counted from the periphery towards the trachea, according to the method of Strahler. A model of from two to nine orders, and of constant total length and volume, was used to investigate the effect of varying the above parameters on the calculated pressure difference across the model during flow. In particular, the branching ratio was set at known values for dog and human lungs, and diameter and length ratios were independently varied. Known data from dog and human lungs were found to be close to the points predicted by the model where the lines of minimal resistance and minimal entropy production crossed. Other factors which may affect the values of these parameters are discussed.  相似文献

MRI images of pulmonary blood flow using arterial spin labeling (ASL) measure the delivery of magnetically tagged blood to an image plane during one systolic ejection period. However, the method potentially suffers from two problems, each of which may depend on the imaging plane location: 1) the inversion plane is thicker than the imaging plane, resulting in a gap that blood must cross to be detected in the image; and 2) ASL includes signal contributions from tagged blood in conduit vessels (arterial and venous). By using an in silico model of the pulmonary circulation we found the gap reduced the ASL signal to 64-74% of that in the absence of a gap in the sagittal plane and 53-84% in the coronal. The contribution of the conduit vessels varied markedly as a function of image plane ranging from ~90% of the overall signal in image planes that encompass the central hilar vessels to <20% in peripheral image planes. A threshold cutoff removing voxels with intensities >35% of maximum reduced the conduit vessel contribution to the total ASL signal to ~20% on average; however, planes with large contributions from conduit vessels underestimate acinar flow due to a high proportion of in-plane flow, making ASL measurements of perfusion impractical. In other image planes, perfusion dominated the resulting ASL images with good agreement between ASL and acinar flow. Similarly, heterogeneity of the ASL signal as measured by relative dispersion is a reliable measure of heterogeneity of the acinar flow distribution in the same image planes.  相似文献

Some morphological features of the human bronchial tree were simulated by computergenerated trees. The trees were ordered by the methods of Horsfield and Strahler. Delta, the difference between the Horsfield orders of the two branches at a bifurcation, was determined by pseudorandom numbers generated according to a distribution of probabilities defined on input. By trial and error a distribution was found which resulted in trees being generated with average Strahler order branching ratios of 2.82, similar to a real bronchial tree. Branching angles and length ratio could also be defined on input. By varying these input parameters it was found that the form of the tree was quite sensitive to them, and that by a suitable choice the intrasegmental part of the bronchial tree could be simulated. It is concluded that branching ratio, length ratio, mean branching angles and distribution of delta are controlled within tight limits in the bronchial tree, and this may support the concept of optimal design.  相似文献

Perfusion heterogeneities in organs such as the heart obey a power law as a function of scale, a behavior termed "fractal." An explanation of why vascular systems produce such a specific perfusion pattern is still lacking. An intuitive branching tree model is presented that reveals how this behavior can be generated as a consequence of scale-independent branching asymmetry and fractal vessel resistance. Comparison of computer simulations to experimental data from the sheep heart shows that the values of the two free model parameters are realistic. Branching asymmetry within the model is defined by the relative tissue volume being fed by each branch. Vessel ordering for fractal analysis of morphology based on fed or drained tissue volumes is preferable to the commonly used Strahler system, which is shown to depend on branching asymmetry. Recently, noninvasive imaging techniques such as PET and MRI have been used to measure perfusion heterogeneity. The model allows a physiological interpretation of the measured fractal parameters, which could in turn be used to characterize vascular morphology and function.  相似文献

The branching characteristic of the arterial system is such that blood pressure pulses propagate with minimum loss. This characteristic depends on the geometric and elastic properties of branching vessels. In the current investigation, mathematical relations of branching geometry and elastic properties are formulated and their relative contributions to pulse reflection at an arterial junction are analyzed. Results show that alteration of pulse transmission through the junction is more significantly affected by changes in branching vessel radii and wall thickness than by corresponding percentage changes in vessel wall elastic moduli.  相似文献

Recently, a complete set of data on the branching pattern of the cat's pulmonary arterial and venous trees and the elasticity of these blood vessels was obtained in our laboratory. Hence it becomes possible for the first time to perform a theoretical analysis of the blood flow in the lung of an animal based on a set of actual data on anatomy and elasticity. This paper presents an analysis of steady flow of blood in cat's lung. The effect of the vessel elasticity is embodied in the "fifth-power law" and the "sheet-flow" theory. The theory yields the pressure-flow relationship of the whole lung, the longitudinal pressure distribution, and the transit time of blood in the capillaries. These results are compared with available experimental data in the literature.  相似文献

Development of an arterial tree in C6 gliomas but not in A375 melanomas   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The microcirculation of tumors is severely disturbed. Tumors are usually supplied by fragile capillaries and do not possess the natural hierarchy of blood vessels. The detection of specific markers for arterial and venous endothelial cells (ECs) now enables us to study the vascular tree in tumors. We have injected rat C6 glioma and human A375 melanoma cells into 3.5- to 4-day-old avian embryos. After 10-12 days of reincubation the tumor cells formed solid tumors vascularized by host ECs. In contrast to the melanomas, the gliomas induced an almost normal vascular tree with arterial and venous vessels. The arterial vessels express the arterial EC marker ephrin-B2, and possess a media of smooth muscle alpha-actin (alphaSMA)-positive cells. Venular vessels in the gliomas are ephrin-B2-negative/alphaSMA-positive. Although the gliomas may represent a rare case of vascular tree induction in tumors, the results underline the heterogeneity of tumor-induced angiogenesis. This has an impact on tumor blood flow and thereby also on the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  相似文献
