During stimulation of phylogenetically ancient parts of the hypothalamus (the anterior and lateral), neuronal reactions have been recorded in the prepyriform lobe and tuberculum olfactorium. These reactions are characterized by a short latent period (6-25 msec) and high stability to rhythmic stimulation. Neuronal reactions in the same olfactory centers during stimulation of phylogenetically more recent hypothalamic structures (the posterior and medial) exhibit a long latent period (30-120 msec) and are readily exhausted by rhythmic stimulation.  相似文献

The periaqueductal gray (PAG) of the midbrain is involved in the autonomic regulation of the cardiovascular system. The purpose of this study was to determine if static contraction of the skeletal muscle, which increases arterial blood pressure and heart rate, activates neuronal cells in the PAG by examining Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI). Muscle contraction was induced by electrical stimulation of the L7 and S1 ventral roots of the spinal cord in anesthetized cats. An intravenous infusion of phenylephrine (PE) was used to selectively activate arterial baroreceptors. Extensive FLI was observed within the ventromedial region (VM) of the rostral PAG, the dorsolateral (DL), lateral (L), and ventrolateral (VL) regions of the middle and caudal PAG in barointact animals with muscle contractions, and in barointact animals with PE infusion. However, muscle contraction caused a lesser number of FLI in the VM region of the rostral PAG, the DL, L, and VL regions of the middle PAG and the L and VL regions of the caudal PAG after barodenervation compared with barointact animals. Additionally, the number of FLI in the DL and L regions of the middle PAG was greater in barodenervated animals with muscle contraction than in barodenervated control animals. Thus these results indicated that both muscle receptor and baroreceptor afferent inputs activate neuronal cells in regions of the PAG during muscle contraction. Furthermore, afferents from skeletal muscle activate neurons in specific regions of the PAG independent of arterial baroreceptor input. Therefore, neuronal cells in the PAG may play a role in determining the cardiovascular responses during the exercise pressor reflex.  相似文献

The influence of electrical stimulation of deep layers of the somatosensory zones CI and CII on unit responses and intercortical evoked potentials (IEP) in the motor cortical zone MI in projection areas of the anterior contralateral limb was studied in cats anaesthetized with Nembutal and immobilized with diplacine. Latencies of the main IEP components and their different behaviour during repeated stimulation, experimental hypoxia and Nembutal administration suggested the presence of intercortical connections of an oligo- and polysynaptic nature. Only 22% of the MI zone units proved to be responsive to CI and CII stimulation; the latencies of the unit discharges varied from 4.3 to 35 msec. A relatively smaller effectiveness of short-latency inputs from CI and CII to MI was recorded as compared with long latency ones.  相似文献

A microiontophoretic study was performed to investigate the effects of a newly synthesized quinolinone derivative, 7-[3-(4-(2,3-dimethylphenyl) piperazinyl) propoxy] 2-(1H)-quinolinone (OPC-4392), on neuronal activities of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of rats anesthetized with chloral hydrate. The VTA neurons, which were identified by antidromic stimulation of the nucleus accumbens (Acc), were classified into type I and type II neurons according to the responses to Acc stimulation: type I neurons had a long spike latency of over 7 msec (9.63 +/- 0.25 msec), and the type II, a short latency of less than 7 msec (2.98 +/- 0.27 msec) upon Acc stimulation. In all of 11 type I neurons, iontophoretically applied OPC-4392 and dopamine inhibited the antidromic spikes elicited by Acc stimulation. This inhibition was antagonized by simultaneous application of domperidone (dopamine D-2 antagonist). However, in 16 out of 19 type II neurons the antidromic spikes were not affected by either OPC-4392 or dopamine. When the effects of iontophoretically applied OPC-4392 and dopamine on spontaneous firings were tested in 32 VTA neurons identified by Acc stimulation (including type I and type II neurons), there was a relationship between the effects of these two drugs. These results suggest that OPC-4392 acts on dopamine D-2 receptors of the dopaminergic neurons in the VTA, thereby inhibiting neuronal activity.  相似文献

The striatum plays a fundamental role in sensorimotor and cognitive functions of the body, and different sub-regions control different physiological functions. The striatal interneurons play important roles in the striatal function, yet their specific functions are not clearly elucidated so far. The present study aimed to investigate the morphological properties of the GABAergic interneurons expressing neuropeptide Y (NPY), calretinin (Cr), and parvalbumin (Parv) as well as the cholinergic interneurons expressing choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the striatal dorsolateral (DL) and ventromedial (VM) regions of rats using immunohistochemistry and Western blot. The present results showed that the somatic size of Cr+ was the smallest, while ChAT+ was the largest among the four types of interneurons. There was no regional difference in neuronal somatic size of all types of interneurons. Cr+ and Parv+ neurons were differentially distributed in the striatum. Moreover, Parv+ had the longest primary dendrites in the DL region, while NPY+ had the longest ones in the VM region of striatum. But there was regional difference in the length of primary dendrites of Parv. The numbers of primary dendrites of Parv+ were the largest in both DL and VM regions of striatum. Both Cr+ and Parv+ primary dendrites displayed regional difference in the striatum. Western blot further confirmed the regional differences in the protein expression level of Cr and Parv. Hence, the present study indicates that GABAergic and cholinergic interneurons might be involved in different physiological functions based on their morphological and distributional diversity in different regions of the rat striatum.  相似文献

Wave VI (8.4 msec) of the brain-stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) was maximal in a discrete region of primary auditory cortex (AI) of the anesthetized cat. Wave VI underwent rapid amplitude decreas over millimeter distances in the AI region and followed high stimulation rates. Wave VI did not show intracortical polarity inversion nor was it abolished by epicortical or intracortical GABA administration. The data are compatible with a wave VI source in the terminal axons of the thalamo-cortical radiations.Middle latency auditory responses (MAEPs) generated 10–40 msec after auditory stimulation were also recorded in a circumscribed area of AI. In contrast to wave VI, these primary auditory cortex potentials (Pa 18.3 msec; Nb 31.9 msec) underwent transcortical polarity inversion, correlated with intracortical multi-unit activity in the AI region and were reversibly altered or abolished by epicortical or intracortical GABA adminstration to the AI region. The data suggest that the Pa and Nb components of the cat MAEP are intracortically generated by neuronal elements in the AI region.  相似文献

It was shown during experiments on cats undergoing surgery under ketamine-induced anesthesia and immobilized with myorelaxin that applying trains of stimuli to the locus coeruleus (LC) produces an effect on 79% of parietal cortex neurons. This manifests as inhibition lasting 300–700 msec or a 16–32% decline in the activity rate of neurons with background activity. Hyperpolarization of 5–7 mV lasting 120–500 msec preceded by a latency of 30–90 msec was noted in such neurons as well as "silent" cells during intracellular recording. Duration of the inhibitory pause in neuronal background activity induced by transcallosal stimulation (TCS) increased by 50–200 msec under the effects of conditioned stimuli applied to the LC. Duration of the IPSP triggered by TCS likewise increased (by 50–100 msec) under the effects of LC stimulation. It was concluded that the effects of stimulating the LC on neuronal activity in the parietal cortex may manifest either directly, as inhibition of background activity and hyperpolarization, or else as modulation of influences exerted by other neurotransmitters.A. Single unit responses of the first (SI) and second (SII) somatosensory areas to stimulation of the ventroposterior thalamic nucleus (VP) were investigated in cats immobilized with D-tubocurarine. In response to VP stimulation 12.0% of reacting SI neurons and 9.5% of SII neurons generated an antidromic spike. In most antidromic responses of both SI and SII neurons the latent period did not exceed 1.0 msec. The minimal latent period of spike potentials during orthodromic excitation was 1.5 msec in SI and 1.7 msec in SII. Neurons with an orthodromic spike latency of not more than 3.0 msec were more numerous in SI than those with a latency of 3.1–4.5 msec. The ratio between the numbers of neurons of these two groups in SII was the opposite. In SII there were many more neurons with a latency of 5.6–8.0 msec than in SI. EPSPs appeared after a latent period of 1.1–9.0 msec in SI and of 1.4–6.6 msec in SII. The latent period of IPSPs was 1.5–6.8 msec in SI and 2.2–9.4 msec in SII. The relative importance of different pathways for excitatory and inhibitory influences of VP on SI and SII neurons is discussed.A. A. Elimination of most granule, basket, and stellate interneurons in the rat cerebellum was achieved by repeated doses of low level x-irradiation applied during the first two weeks of postnatal life. Electrical stimulation of the brain stem and peripheral limbs was employed to investigate the properties of afferent cerebellar pathways and the nature of the reorganized neuronal synaptic circuitry in the degranulated cerebellum of the adult. Direct contacts of mossy fibers on Purkinje cells were indicated by short latency, single spike responses: 1.9 msec from the lateral reticular nucleus of brain stem and 5.4 msec from ipsilpateral forelimb. These were shorter than in normal rats by 0.9 and 2.1 msec, respectively. The topography of projections from peripheral stimulation was approximately normal. Mossy fiber responses followed stimulation at up to 20/sec, whereas climbing fiber pathways fatigued at 10/sec. The latency of climbing fiber input to peripheral limb stimulation in x-irradiated cerebellum was 23 +/- 8 (SD) msec. In x-irradiated rats, the climbing fiber pathways evoked highly variable extracellular burst responses and intracellular EPSPs of different, discrete sizes. These variable responses suggest that multiple climbing fibers contact single Purkinje cells. We conclude that each type of afferent retains identifying characteristics of transmission. However, rules for synaptic specification appear to break down so that: (1) abnormal classes of neurons develop synaptic connections, i.e., mossy fibers to Purkinje cells; (2) incorrect numbers of neurons share postsynaptic targets, i.e., more than one climbing fiber to a Purkinje cell; and (3) inhibitory synaptic actions may be carried out in the absence of the major inhibitory interneurons, i.e., Purkinje cell collaterals may be effective in lieu of basket and stellate cells.  相似文献

Extensive neurophysiological investigations were carried out in 18 healthy volunteer subjects, and 6 patients with neurological disease. The tests consisted of spinal and scalp somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to stimulation of the dorsal nerve of penis/clitoris, motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from the bulbocavernosus muscle (BC) and anal sphincter (AS) in response to scalp and sacral root stimulation, and measurement of sacral reflex latency (SRL) from BC and AS.In the control subjects, the mean sensory total conduction time (sensory TCT), as measured at the peak of the scalp P40 wave was 40.9 msec (range: 37.8–44.2). The mean sensory central conduction time (sensory CCT = spine-to-scalp conduction time) was 27.0 msec (range: 23.5–30.4).Transcranial brain stimulation was performed by using a magnetic stimulator both at rest and during voluntary contraction of the examined muscle. Sacral root stimulation was performed at rest. Motor total conduction times (motor TCT) to BC and AS muscles were respectively 28.8 and 30.0 msec at rest, and 22.5 and 22.8 msec during contraction. Motor central conduction times (motor CCT) to sacral cord segments controlling BC and AS muscles were respectively 22.4 and 21.2 msec at rest, and 15.1 and 12.4 msec during contraction. The mean latencies of SRL were respectively 31.4 msec in the bulbocavernosus muscle and 35.9 msec in the anal sphincter. Combined or isolated abnormalities of SEPs, MEPs and SRL were found in a small group of patients with neurological disorders primarily or secondarily affecting the genito-urinary tract.  相似文献

Cortical evoked potentials and extracellular evoked neuronal activity have been investigated in unanesthetized d-curarine immobilized rats during stimulation of the superior colliculi. The focus of responses was found in the lateral part of the visual neocortex (area 18a according to Krieg [5]). The evoked potential includes a negative and subsequent positive waves, its latency being equal to 7.9 +/- 2.8 msec. With deepening the electrode the amplitude of the response decreases, although its polarity remains unchanged. The neuronal activity is of phasic character. During simultaneous record of the evoked potentials and neuronal activity, temporal correlation between impulse activity and the ascending part of the main negative wave of the EP is observed. The data obtained indicate imcomplete overlapping of the retino-geniculo-cortical and retino-tecto-thalamo-cortical channels in the visual system of rats.  相似文献

Somatosensory vertex potentials (SVPs) were examined in 12 healthy subjects in response to painful electrical stimulation of the finger. SVPs consisted of N1, P1, and N2. The average latencies of the 3 peaks were 150, 225, and 350 msec, respectively. The latency and amplitude of each potential were reproducible for each subject. Recovery functions of the SVPs were analyzed in 10 subjects. A pair of stimuli were delivered to the right or left finger with interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 50, 100, 150, 200, 350, 500 and 650 msec. SVPs partially recovered with the shortest ISI (50 msec). Full recovery could not be obtained even with the longest ISI (650 msec). Differences in recoveries within 650 msec of ISI were not observed between right and left stimulations. To examine the interaction between SVPs evoked by right and left finger stimulation, recovery functions from prior contralateral finger stimulation were analyzed with the same ISIs. SVP recoveries for right after left or left after right patterns of stimulus delivery were nearly the same as those for ipsilateral ones. It is suggested that SVPs are generated at nearly the same site in the sensory pathway regardless of the side stimulated.  相似文献

Summary Evoked potentials were recorded from the hypothalamus of acutely-prepared estrous guinea-pigs responding to electrical stimulation of the vaginal cervix. The latency ranged from 38 to 60 msec. The peak of the first positive wave appeared 50 to 90 msec after the stimulation, usually followed by a negative wave in 120 msec. These responses were obtained from the mid-hypothalamus. The cervical stimulation subsequently induced the release of hypophysial luteotropin (LTH) as indicated by the occurrence of pseudopregnancy. According to the results, the mechanism triggering hypothalamic potential changes was discussed in connection with the LTH secretion.Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation in 1967/68.  相似文献

Focal potentials (FP) in segments L6–L7 of the ventral horn, evoked by stimulation of the motor cortex with series of stimuli of threshold magnitude for the flexor nerve response, were studied in acute experiments on cats. Appreciable differences were found to exist between the FP arising in the medial zone (layer VIII of Rexed) and those in the inner and outer parts of the lateral zone (layer IX). The FP of the medial zone appear earlier than in other zones (with a latency of 5–12 msec); they are multiphasic, negative components predominating over the positive ones. The FP from the inner part of layer IX possess the largest amplitude (up to 500 µV), a latency of 7–13 msec, a large first negative phase, and marked late positivity. Positive — negative FP (latency 9–15 msec) of small amplitude are recorded from the outermost portion of the ventral horn. The FP of the three zones mentioned above differ also with respect to other functional criteria. The FP of the medial zone are assumed to reflect the realization at the segmental level of the extrapyramidal component of descending cortical activity, the FP of both lateral zones reflecting reciprocal interrelations between postsynaptic processes in the motoneurons of flexor and extensor nuclei during implementation of a cortical motor reaction.I. PurposeThis study attempted to assess if the resisted contraction of medial rotators of the tibia increases the ratio between the activity of vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) during maximal isometric contractions (MIC) of the quadriceps femoral (QF) muscle at 90° of knee flexion.MethodsAbout 24 female subjects participated in this study, performing four series MIC of the QF. In the first series subjects performed only MIC of the QF muscle, whereas in the other three there was MIC of the QF with resisted contraction of medial rotators of the tibia, with the tibia positioned in medial, neutral and lateral rotation. During each contraction, VM and VL electromyographic signal (EMGs) and QF force were collected, being the EMGs root mean square (RMS) used to access the activity level of these muscles.ResultsThe use of the General Linear Model (GLM) test showed that for α = 0.05 there was a significant increase in the VM:VL ratio when the resisted contraction of medial rotators of the tibia was performed with the tibia in medial (p = <0.0001), neutral (p = <0.0001) and lateral rotation (p = 0.001). The same test showed that during MIC of the QF associated to resisted contraction of medial rotators of the tibia there were no significant differences in the VM:VL ratio between the three tibial rotation positions adopted (p = 0.866 [medial–neutral]; p = 0.106 [medial–lateral]; p = 0.068 [neutral–lateral]).ConclusionsThe resisted contraction of medial rotators of the tibia increases the VM:VL ratio during MIC of the QF and the tibial rotation position does not influence the VM:VL ratio during MIC associated to resisted contraction of medial rotators of the tibia.  相似文献

Spike activity was investigated in limbic cortex neurons during defensive conditioning to acoustic stimulation in chronic experiments on cats. A relationship was found between the numbers of neurons responding, their contribution to formation of a temporal connection, and the duration of the acoustic stimulus. Phasic responses of 50–500 msec duration with latencies of 15–50 msec were observed for the most part. Intensive spike response with a minimum latency of 15 msec and a duration of between 200 msec and 2.5 sec evolved in most cells (95.1% in field 24 and 83% in field 32) in response to electrical stimulation. Response to acoustic stimulation rose during defensive conditioning in 33.3% cells and declined and finally disappeared in 13.3%, but response at the site where reinforcement was abolished was reproduced in all these cells. It was thus found that the numbers of limbic cortex neurons responding to sound not only fails to increase but actually decreases after training. The limbic cortex is thought to play its most active part in conditioning response to a recognized signal during the period preceding the awaited painful reinforcement.A. A. Following the bipolar stimulation of the vesico-urethral junction (VUJ), evoked potentials (EPs) with a late and prominent negativity (mean latency 91.4 ± 11.0 msec) were recorded from scalp in 22 male subjects. Although remarkable intersubject variations occurred, no peak variation could be seen in any given subject. Maximum amplitude of the EPs was recorded from Cz and CzP points. Stimuli with various frequencies did not lead to any differences in shape and latency of EPs.The differences between the EPs by bipolar stimulation of the VUJ and the responses elicited by distal urethal and pudendal nerve stimulation suggest that, during bipolar stimulation of VUJ, the somatic afferents were not excited. Therefore, these responses were most likely due to the excitement of the visceral afferents arising from the VUJ separately. This method may be a useful technique for evaluating the physiological condition of the afferent nerves arising from VUJ.  相似文献

The afferent pathways from the rectum can be stimulated and studied after mechanical distention of the rectum. We studied the rectum-brain axis in 24 healthy young adults. The rectum was stimulated with a rectal balloon using inflation volumes of 10 ml and 30 ml air at a stimulation frequency of 0.167 Hz. Additional studies were carried out with 20 ml distention volumes, random stimulation frequency, and stimulation rates of 0.08 Hz and 0.017 Hz. We found two different cortical EPs. An early onset EP was present in 21 of the 24 subjects. P1 latency shortened significantly with increasing distention volumes, but peak amplitudes did not change significantly with larger distention volumes. A late onset EP was present in all subjects with NI latency of 210 ± 15 msec, PI latency of 316 ± 24 msec, and NII latency of 444 ± 34 msec. The different EPs could be due to stimulation of two different visceral afferent pathways which are present in the same individual, due to stimulation of two different fiber populations or due to simultaneous stimulation of afferents in surrounding structures. EP recording after rectal stimulation might be useful in future studies of patients with abnormal rectal sensation.  相似文献
