Summary Both Carl Gegenbaur and Ernst Haeckel feuded with Anton Dohrn with respect to vertebrate origins and how one should study phylogeny. Although they argued about methodology, and also had serious differences with respect to philosophical issues, their different personal agendas with respect to research and institution-building may have been equally significant.  相似文献

According to Anton Dohrn, evolutionary development was performed in a single progressive lineage where some proto-annelid initiated an evolutionary development that went straight on via annelids and lower vertebrates to man. From that line, a kind of metamorphosing nature, certain branches were derived, like protists or worms or even tunicates, which Dohrn thought off as degenerating groups. With that concept Dohrn came close to typological ideas of his time. Nevertheless, recent evo-devo literature seems to be influenced by Dohrn's outline of evolution.  相似文献

Five different letters and post cards as well as the shirt worn by Anton Chekhov on his death bed, stored in the State Literary‐Memorial Museum‐Reserve A. P. Chekhov Melikhovo (nearby Moscow), have been analyzed by applying EVA (an ethyl vinyl acetate foil studded with crushed strong anion and cation exchangers and with C8 resins) diskettes to these surfaces. Three different eluates (under acidic and basic conditions and with acetonitrile) were analyzed by high resolution mass spectrometry. The environmental microbiota present on samples and the Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain were described by a meta‐proteomics approach. Eight identified M. tuberculosis proteins confirmed the presence of the bacterium and the cause of Chekhov's death, in addition to several sequenced peptides belonging to other bacterial species. The human plasma proteins and human keratins, detected on a tiny blood spot on the shirt, demonstrated the power of the combined approach.  相似文献

Abstract The protein synthesis pattern was investigated in Bacillus subtilis relA + and relA after heat shock using the highly sensitive 2-dimensional O'Farrell technique [1]. The synthesis of several proteins is markedly enhanced upon temperature shift-up in both strains. At 52°C the growth rate is drastically diminished because the synthesis of cellular proteins is inhibited. However, the production of heat-shock proteins is maintained. The synthesis of some of these presumptive heat-shock proteins is stimulated at 37°C in cells treated with H2O2 as well as with norvaline, which induces a guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp)-dependent stringent response.  相似文献

Our efforts on the synthesis of peptides with well-characterized secondary structures, combined with detailed spectroscopic investigations, most of them performed in collaboration with internationally recognized experts, have allowed us to publish the electronic (electronic circular dichroism) and vibrational (FTIR absorption, vibrational circular dichroism, Raman, and Raman optical activity) signatures of the poorly studied peptide 3(10)-helix (and the related β-bend ribbon spiral conformation as well) in comparison with those already known for the classical α-helix.  相似文献

In the late 19th century, pneumonia was one of the leading causes of death in Europe and the USA. Although at this time doctors knew about the infectious cause of pneumonia, they were not able to offer patients specific antimicrobial therapy. In the current paper, we translated into English for the first time and analyzed the almost forgotten medical report of a pneumonic patient written by the famous Russian writer and physician Anton Chekhov (1860–1904), which describes the classic stages of lobar pneumonia, now no longer observed in clinical practice due to antibacterial treatment. Despite the limited capabilities of lung disease diagnosis compared to the possibilities of modern medicine, physicians were able to diagnose lobar pneumonia using techniques of percussion and auscultation. Therapy in this case was limited to diet and symptomatic treatment and could only relieve some of the symptoms. This case history shows that in the early 1880s, in the one of the leading university clinics in Russia, despite the transition from humoral theory and ideas of natural philosophy to the concept of cellular pathology, there were still contradictory trends in the treatment of diseases.  相似文献
