There are now compelling observations of the ecological impacts of global change on marine ecosystems. A predicted 10% increase in UVB doses at the Earth's surface has been shown to impair indirectly the reproductive output of marine copepods. Wild females of Calanus helgolandicus fed with UVB-irradiated diatoms produced fewer eggs and unhealthy offspring exhibiting a large proportion of high lethal naupliar deformities. By reproducing the same irradiative stress on the pelagic diatom Skeletonema costatum, we looked for potential modifications of the algal properties (cell size, biovolume, chlorophyll content) and biochemical characteristics (fatty acid and amino acid contents). Our results confirmed that the metabolism of S. costatum is adversely affected by enhanced UVB exposure: cell growth was reduced and the biochemical characteristics, and thus the algal nutritional quality, were significantly altered. UVB irradiation reduced cell division, leading to cell elongation and thus increasing the biovolume. Meanwhile, the amino acid and fatty acid contents did not increase concomitantly to the cell enlargement and were thus diluted in the cell. Because of this dilution, the irradiated S. costatum represents a poorer diet for its potential consumers. Moreover, UVB dramatically affects the relative contribution of certain essential fatty acids such as eicosapentanoic acid (EPA), which are essential for the development of marine invertebrates.  相似文献

Diatoms that produce toxic oxylipins can be detrimental to the reproductive success of aquatic invertebrates. Despite the potential importance of these toxins in shaping aquatic ecosystems, marine studies to date have focused almost exclusively on planktonic calanoid copepods. The current work examines the response of the benthic harpacticoid copepod, Tisbe holothuriae, to direct exposure to diatom-derived oxylipins and the short-term impact of oxylipin-producing diatom diets on reproductive success. The most toxic oxylipin was the polyunsaturated aldehyde (PUA) 2E,4E-decadienal with an LD50 of 9.3 μM for T. holothuriae nauplii. The least tolerant life-stage was the nauplius followed by adult males then adult females. Short-term exposure to PUA-producing diatoms (Skeletonema marinoi and Melosira nummuloides) in maternal diets had no significant impact on reproductive success compared with non-PUA-producing diets (Skeletonema costatum, Navicula hanseni, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Tetraselmis suecica). The PUA producers had no negative impact on the survival and development of naupliar stages to adulthood. T. holothuriae expresses a higher degree of tolerance to PUA-producing diatoms than many planktonic calanoids, possibly reflecting a degree of adaptation to higher stress levels associated with the benthos. This is the first study to investigate the reproductive responses of harpacticoid copepods feeding on known PUA-producing diatoms.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the influence of the diets of two diatoms, Navicula sp. (benthic) and Thalassiosira fluviatilis (planctonic), on the development, fecundity and survival of the harpacticoid copepod Tisbe biminiensis. In order to determine the optimal concentration of food, 35 egg-bearing females were submitted to six algal concentrations and controls (without food). After 24 h, the content of the recipients was fixed with 4% formalin and then fecal pellets produced by each female were counted and measured. The larval development was studied by surveying 50 nauplii on each diet individually until the adult stage, at intervals of 6 h. The cast exoskeletons were removed to count the number of segments and for measurement. The fecundity was obtained counting the naupliar production every 48 h of groups containing 10 females in different algal concentrations in both diets. The diet influence on fecundity was tested by submitting four groups of 10 females fed on optimal algal concentrations based on the fecal pellet experiments. In the Navicula sp. concentration of 0.4 μg Chl-a/ml, considered to be optimal for fecal pellets production, the diatoms were shown toxic, resulting in a low survival rate and inhibiting the egg production of copepods. The optimal concentration considering fecundity was estimated to be 0.1 μg Chl-a/ml for both diets. Copepods fed on Navicula sp. presented a faster development rate and higher naupliar production compared to copepods fed on T. fluviatilis. Size and survival did not vary significantly among diets. The algal concentration interfered significantly in the reproductive success of females. Both very low and very high algal concentrations reduced reproductive success. Concluding, the benthic diatom Navicula sp. was more favorable to the copepod T. biminiensis than the planktonic diatom T. fluviatilis.  相似文献

The influence of diatoms on the reproduction and naupliar development of Acartia bifilosa was investigated under laboratory conditions, comparing initial in situ values and laboratory-food treatments. Egg production by A. bifilosa was significantly reduced by one diatom diet (Phaeodactylum tricornutum: Pt) and by two non-diatom diets (Platymonas subordiformis: Ps and Nannochloropsis oculata: No). It was less affected by the other diatom diet (Skeletonema costatum: Sc) or by two mixed-food treatments (D-mix and DG-mix), composed of two diatoms (Pt, Sc) and four species (Pt, Sc, Ps and No), respectively. The negative effect of Pt was eliminated when adult copepods were offered mixed-food diets. There were no significant differences between the hatching success values observed in filtered seawater and in algal exudates, indicating that diatoms did not produce active dissolved toxic substances under the different food concentrations tested. The mortality rate of nauplii was higher with Pt than the other diets, suggesting that this diatom species had a negative effect on egg production, hatching success and naupliar survival simultaneously. Compared to other diets, No and Pt were not beneficial food sources for reproduction and for female and larval survival.  相似文献

We investigated growth interactions between the dinophyte Prorocentrum minimum and the bacillariophyte Skeletonema costatum using bi-algal cultures under axenic conditions. When low cell densities of P. minimum and high cell densities of S. costatum were inoculated into the same medium, growth of P. minimum was suppressed. Other inoculum combinations resulted in reduced S. costatum maximum cell densities. A mathematical model was used to simulate growth and interactions of P. minimum and S. costatum in bi-algal cultures. The model indicated that P. minimum always outcompeted S. costatum over time. Enriched filtrate from low-density P. minimum cultures significantly stimulated S. costatum growth, but enriched filtrate from high-density P. minimum cultures notably inhibited the growth of S. costatum. Growth of P. minimum was not affected by enriched filtrate from cultures of P. minimum at any density. Filtrates of P. minimum cultures were fractionated by ultrafiltration (molecular weight cutoff >3000 Da), and retentate that included polysaccharide(s) significantly inhibited the growth of S. costatum.  相似文献

Embryos obtained from gravid adults of the chthamalid barnacle Octomeris sulcata Nilsson-Cantell from Japan and Korea were cultured through six naupliar stages to the cyprid and juvenile barnacle stage in laboratory conditions, fed either the diatom Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve or the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller. The nauplii were planktotrophic and, depending on diet, reached the cyprid stage 9 or 17 days after hatching in individual cultures at 22 °C with 24 h illumination. The survival rate was higher and the duration of the naupliar stages was shorter when fed P. minimum rather than S. costatum. This is probably due to the presence of feathered setae on the antennae. Feathered or plumose setae in nauplii of different cirripede taxa are apparently linked to the type of phytoplankton in the seas when these taxa first evolved. The larval stages of O. sulcata are described, and morphological differences between larvae reared from Japanese andKorean adults are compared. The polygonal cephalic shield and unilobed labrum, a pair of posterior shield spines after naupliar stage IV, feathered setae and a hispid seta on the coxa of the antenna, a cuspidate seta on the mandible, and the gnathobase of the antenna are important in distinguishing the nauplii of this species from other species, including Chthamalidae.  相似文献

Variations of cellular total lipid, total carbohydrate and total protein content of two dominant bloom-forming species (Skeletonema costatum and Prorocentrum donghaiense) isolated from the Yangtze River Estuary were examined under six different nutrient conditions in batch cultures. Daily samples were collected to estimate the cell growth, nutrient concentration and three biochemical compositions content during 7 days for S. costatum and the same sampling procedure was done every other day during 10 days for P. donghaiense. Results showed that for S. costatum, cellular total lipid content increased under phosphorus (P) limitation, but not for nitrogen (N) limitation; cellular carbohydrate were accumulated under both N and P limitation; cellular total protein content of low nutrient concentration treatments were significantly lower than that of high nutrient concentration treatments. For P. donghaiense, both cellular total lipid content and total carbohydrate content were greatly elevated as a result of N and P exhaustion, but cellular total protein content had no significant changes under nutrient limitation. In addition, the capability of accumulation of three biochemical constituents of P. donghaiense was much stronger than that of S. costatum. Pearson correlation showed that for both species, the biochemical composition of three constituents (lipid, carbohydrate and protein) had no significant relationship with extracellular N concentration, but had positive correlation with extracellular and intracellular P concentration. The capability of two species to accumulate cellular total lipid and carbohydrate under nutrient limitation may help them accommodate the fluctuating nutrient condition of the Yangtze River Estuary. The different responses of two species of cellular biochemical compositions content under different nutrient conditions may provide some evidence to explain the temporal characteristic of blooms caused by two species in the Yangtze River Estuary.  相似文献

The impact of diatom food species (Chaetoceros calcitrans and Skeletonema costatum), temperature and starvation on the larval development of Balanus amphitrite was evaluated. Starvation threshold levels for different ages of larvae (0- to 5-day-old) fed with C. calcitrans and S. costatum and then starved at 5, 15 and 25 °C temperature were estimated as ultimate recovery hour (URH; denoting the starvation point in hours at the end of which larvae can recover and continue development). Effect of temperature on starvation threshold varied significantly with larval age and food species. The URH declined with larval age at 5 °C, but not at 15 and 25 °C. The URH and grazing rates were high for early instars fed on C. calcitrans, and for advanced instars fed on S. costatum. Carbon gain through feeding was maximum for 2-day-old larvae when fed with C. calcitrans and decreased with larval age. However, when fed with S. costatum carbon gain increased with larval age. This confirms that with development the utility of food types changes. The differences in the carbon gain can be attributed to differences in grazing rate due to variations in the size of the diatom cells, larval intersetular distance, diatom sinking rate and the photo-taxic behavior of larvae. Molting was observed at times when larvae were undergoing starvation and this could be viewed as stress-induced molting, and it differed with the larval age and food organisms.  相似文献

The extreme environmental changes observed in high-shore rockpools occupied by Tigriopus brevicornis, provide a significant physiological challenge that may have implications for the energetics and hence the life history characteristics of this species. The present study was designed to assess the effect of this environmental variation on the reproductive development time and output of T. brevicornis in terms of duration of the various stages in ovary and egg sac development and maturation as well as naupliar development time to the first copepodite stage and total numbers of copepodites produced. There was a significant difference in reproductive development time and output in the three test salinities with only successful development to copepodite I stage seen in normal seawater (35 psu). There was also a successful release of nauplii seen at the low salinity (5 psu), but no subsequent survival to the copepodite I stage, whilst there was not even a development of egg sacs in the high salinity test medium (70 psu). There was also a significant difference in reproductive development times in the three test temperatures with fastest ovary development in the high temperature (23 °C) and slowest development time in the lowest temperature (5 °C). However, it should be noted that the highest number of nauplii produced was actually in the mid temperature (12 °C), not the high temperature. Exposure to hypoxic and anoxic conditions had a significantly detrimental effect on reproductive development with slower development time through the reproductive stages and no individuals surviving to copepodite stage I from the hypoxic and anoxic test conditions, but good development from the normoxic conditions. The present study indicates that animals living in high-shore rockpools may incur a considerable energetic cost, due to the environmental changes that are characteristic of this habitat and the importance of resource allocation in these different physiological conditions is paramount to the species' survival.  相似文献

Calanus finmarchicus, one of the dominant copepods species of the North Atlantic, often encounters low food concentration or quality during the reproductive period; however, our knowledge on the effect of these conditions on reproduction processes is scarce. The present study combines experiments with histological observations to describe the response of C. finmarchicus to limited food focussing on (1) oocyte maturation processes, (2) gonad morphology, (3) egg production rates as a function of spawning frequency and clutch size, and (4) the fuelling of egg production by measuring carbon and nitrogen content of the females. In the laboratory, C. finmarchicus females were exposed to 0, 10, 50, 150 or >300 μg C l−1 for several days. To account for food quality and season, reproductive activity was compared in April and July 1999 between females feeding on diatoms or dinoflagellates. The effect of feeding history was studied in February with females fed and starving prior to the experiment. Feeding conditions had severe effects on oocyte maturation process. Hence, egg production varied significantly with food concentration and quality, season and feeding history due to variation in both clutch size and spawning frequency. Clutch size differed by a factor of 2-4 between food limited and well fed females, and is thus an important parameter for modelling egg production. Changes in clutch size were related to changes of the number of maturing oocytes in the females gonads indicating that the latter can be used to precise the prediction of egg production from preserved samples. The proportion of females carrying at least some mature oocytes was relatively high at low food availability. Apparently, these females used internal body reserves as the carbon and nitrogen content decreased significantly under these conditions. These results indicate that C. finmarchicus embarks on the strategy to enable reproduction in all or many females of a population at low rates when feeding conditions are unfavourable.  相似文献

Gelatinous zooplankton play a crucial role in marine planktonic food webs. However, primarily due to methodological challenges, the in situ diet of zooplankton remains poorly investigated and little is known about their trophic interactions including feeding behaviour, prey selection and in situ feeding rates. This is particularly true for gelatinous zooplankton including the marine pelagic tunicate, Dolioletta gegenbauri. In this study, we applied an 18S rRNA amplicon metabarcoding approach to identify the diet of captive‐fed and wild‐caught D. gegenbauri on the midcontinental shelf of the South Atlantic Bight, USA. Sequencing‐based approaches were complimented with targeted quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses. Captive‐fed D. gegenbauri gut content was dominated by pico‐, nano‐ and micro‐plankton including pico‐dinoflagellates (picozoa) and diatoms. These results suggested that diatoms were concentrated by D. gegenbauri relative to their concentration in the water column. Analysis of wild‐caught doliolids by quantitative real‐time PCR utilizing a group‐specific diatom primer set confirmed that diatoms were concentrated by D. gegenbauri, particularly by the gonozooid life stage associated with actively developing blooms. Sequences derived from larger metazoans were frequently observed in wild‐caught animals but not in captive‐fed animals suggesting experimental bias associated with captive feeding. These studies revealed that the diet of D. gegenbauri is considerably more diverse than previously described, that parasites are common in wild populations, and that prey quality, quantity and parasites are likely all important factors in regulating doliolid population dynamics in continental shelf environments.  相似文献

The response of Phaeocystis globosa to small-scale turbulence was studied in 5 l microcosms. Turbulence was generated by oscillating grids. The effect of small-scale turbulence was examined under 3 turbulence levels representative of the P. globosa natural environment, and in non-turbulent control cultures. Single cell numbers, nitrogen concentrations and colony formation (number and diameter) were followed over 13 days in each experimental culture. Small-scale turbulence decreased single cell growth and also influenced colony formation. More colonies were formed when turbulence increased to a given threshold, but above this turbulence level, fewer and smaller colonies were observed in P. globosa cultures. The ecological significance of these results, particularly, the potential influence of small-scale turbulence on competition mechanisms between P. globosa and diatoms are finally discussed and suggested as a key factor to understand phytoplankton successions in the Eastern English Channel.  相似文献

The brackish water copepod Eurytemora affinis is the most abundant copepod species in the low salinity zone (2-15) of the Seine estuary. Despite its ecological importance, little is known about its population dynamics in the Seine. We studied the effects of temperature (10 °C and 15 °C) and salinity (5, 15 and 25) on reproduction under non-limiting food conditions. We used experiments to determine multiple reproductive parameters for E. affinis. In all experiments, we fed E. affinis a mixture of Rhodomonas marina and Isochrysis galbana. Couples of pre-adult females (C5) and adult males were mated until the female extruded a clutch of eggs and then individual females were observed every 6-12 hours until death to determine (a) embryonic development time, (b) inter clutch time and (c) clutch size throughout their adult lifespan. All reproductive parameters were negatively affected by low temperature (10 °C) and by high salinity (25). At 10 °C and a salinity of 25, mortality during the post-embryonic period was extremely high (85%). Differences in all reproductive parameters between salinities 5 and 15 were minimal. From 15 °C to 10 °C mean latency time (time between hatching of eggs and extrusion of new ones) increased from 0.8 to 2.25 days, the mean embryonic development time from 2.2 to 3.2 days and the mean clutch size decreased from 38 to 22 eggs female- 1. The mean clutch size decreased when females reached a critical age. The hatching success was high (near 95%) under all conditions except at high salinity. Egg production rates showed no significant differences between salinities 5 and 15 and were significantly higher at 15 °C (13 eggs female- 1 day- 1 at salinity 5 and 15) than at 10 °C (4 eggs female- 1 day- 1). These values at 15 °C were higher compared to those from other populations of E. affinis in estuaries or lakes. The high reproductive potential of E. affinis from the Seine estuary at 15 °C and low salinities explain its high densities in the low salinity zone during spring and early summer.  相似文献

Studies on cannibalism in harpacticoid copepods are restricted to predation on naupliar larvae in rock-pool harpacticoids of the genus Tigriopus. An earlier experimental study on the Mediterranean copepod Tigriopus fulvus indicated that females recognized their own larvae and preferentially preyed on nauplii other than their own. In a series of laboratory experiments, we tested if there were differences in naupliar predation as a function of crowding, food level and sex in Tigriopus brevicornis and T. fulvus. Results show that cannibalism was restricted to the first larval stages (N1 and N2). Both food availability and adult density significantly affected the predation rate. Contrary to earlier suggestions, adult males also preyed on the nauplii. We found no evidence that adults spare their own offspring, for neither T. fulvus nor T. brevicornis. This is in accordance with what one would expect for species having the life history characteristics of Tigriopus, i.e.: multiple broods and large number of offspring. Earlier results indicating parental care in Tigriopus must be taken with caution.  相似文献

Four diatoms, Thalassiosira rotula (THA), Thalassiosira weissflogii (TWEI), Skeletonema costatum (SKE) and Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PHA), and one dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (PRO, control diet), were tested during the course of 14-day laboratory experiments examining the effects of these algae on the fecundity and egg viability in the copepod Temora stylifera. All algae were provided at the same mean carbon concentrations of 0.98 μg C ml−1 to normalize the effects due to differences in diatom size and nutrient concentrations, at least with regards to carbon, so that variations in egg production and hatching viability were presumably due to other chemical constituents of the cells. Our results show that only PRO supported high reproductive success, with stable egg production rates and egg viability close to 100%. By contrast, all four diatoms negatively impacted egg production and hatching success, with varying degrees of suppression. The two diets SKE and PHA induced dramatic effects on reproductive success; SKE was the worst diet with naupliar production ceasing altogether within only 3 days. With PHA, fecundity never reached zero, but at the end of the experiments, initial egg production rates had dropped to 6.6% of initial rates, and viability had declined to zero within 7 days. The two Thalassiosira species mainly affected egg viability, so that after 14 days of feeding, a decrease of 90% had occurred. However, egg production rates were high and were reduced only by 15-24% towards the end of the experiments. In terms of potential recruitment rates, even though PRO induced high mean naupliar production, a slight decrease was observed during the first 5 days, likely due to the time required for T. stylifera to acclimate to PRO. After day 5, potential recruitment rate was higher, comparable to in situ values. THA and TWEI inhibited potential recruitment up to 90-100%, but these effects were not evident over a short-term period, denoting the importance of introducing the time factor when evaluating diatom effects on copepod production. With the other two diatom diets, SKE and PHA, recruitment was zero after 2 and 6 days, respectively. Experiments testing the effects of unsaturated aldehydes in THA (2-trans-4-trans-decadienal) and SKE (2-trans-4-trans-octadienal and 2-trans-4-trans-heptadienal) on the hatching viability of T. stylifera indicate that diatom-derived aldehydes may differ in terms of biological activity. Of the three molecules tested, decadienal had somewhat stronger effects on hatching success, with total blockage occurring at concentrations of 2.0 μg ml−1; the concentrations to induce total blockage by octadienal and heptadienal were somewhat higher and ≥2.5 μg ml−1. We suggest that the greater biological activity of SKE in terms of cell blockage may thus be due to the presence of antimitotic compounds other than these unsaturated aldehydes.  相似文献

Variations of egg production rate (EPR), hatching success (HS), production of abnormal larvae (AL) and histology of gonads have been investigated with Calanus chilensis females sampled weekly, from late November to December 2004, at a station located in the coastal zone off Dichato (Chile), at time diatom concentration in phytoplankton bloom was high. Weekly EPR estimate in nature did not change significantly during this period. It remained close to normal values (25-40 eggs/female/day), whereas HS was constantly low and high proportions of AL were observed. In parallel, bioassays revealed that EPR was strongly depressed by artificially enriched diets, corresponding to natural diatom assemblages (NDA) occurring in the field, while abnormal HS and AL values could not be improved. Ingestion of diatoms by females was estimated by faecal pellet production rates and SEM examination of diatom remains in pellet samples. Low HS and the high amounts of abnormal larvae were not reversible when females were offered a favourable food, the dinoflagellate P. minimum (PM). Minor cell degradations were observed in gonads of females fed NDA diets. In comparison with other environments, present results show that impairment of Calanoid copepod reproductive factors can occur at both high and low diatom concentrations, depending on maternal diets and diatom species in blooms.

Most marine turtle species are non-annual breeders and show variation in both the number of eggs laid per clutch and the number of clutches laid in a season. Large levels of inter-annual variation in the number of nesting females have been well documented in green turtle nesting populations and may be linked to environmental conditions. Other species of marine turtle exhibit less variation in nesting numbers. This inter-specific difference is thought to be linked to trophic status. To examine whether individual reproductive output is more variable in the herbivorous green turtle (Chelonia mydas Linneaeus 1758) than the carnivorous loggerhead (Caretta caretta Linneaeus 1758), we examined the nesting of both species in Cyprus over nine seasons. Green turtles showed slower annual growth rates (0.11 cm year−1 curved carapace length (CCL) and 0.27 cm year−1 curved carapace width (CCW)) than loggerhead turtles (0.36 cm year−1 CCL, 0.51 cm year−1 CCW). CCL was highly correlated to mean clutch size in both green (R2=0.51) and loggerhead turtles (R2=0.61) and maximal clutch size of green turtles (R2=0.58). Larger females did not lay a greater number of clutches or have a shorter remigration interval than smaller females of either species. On average, the size of green turtle clutches increased and that of loggerhead turtles decreased as the season progressed. Individual green turtles, however, produced more eggs per clutch through the season to a maximum in the third or fourth clutch. In loggerhead turtles, clutches 1-4 were very similar in size but the fifth clutch was 38% smaller than the first. No individuals of either species were recorded laying more than five clutches. Green turtles may not be able to achieve their maximum reproductive output with respect to clutch size throughout the season, whereas only loggerhead turtles laying five clutches (n=5) appear to become resource depleted. Green turtles nesting in years when large numbers of nests were recorded laid a greater number of clutches than females nesting in years with lower levels of nesting.  相似文献

Cultures of the plankton diatoms Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve, Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve, and Lauderia annulata Cleve were grown in sea-water samples collected in the inner Oslofjord on 11 occasions between February, 1976 and January, 1977. The growth experiments were carried out in silicone-coated culture flasks, with nitrate, phosphate, and silicate added in excess, and under standardized conditions of a temperature of 10 °C and a saturating light intensity. Growth rates, as measured during exponential growth over a period of 5–6 days, were, with very few exceptions, close to the maximum rates obtained in a complete medium. The addition of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to the water samples did not lead to improved growth, nor did EDTA have an effect on the initial lag phase. The lack of a seasonal variation in the observed growth responses was in marked contrast to the large fluctuations in the phytoplankton populations in the fjord. These findings give no support to the hypothesis that species successions among marine plankton diatoms are influenced by organic chelators or other extracellular substances produced by planktonic algae.  相似文献

Abundance and reproductive traits (spawning female, egg production, egg hatching success) and naupliar survival of the dominant calanoid copepod Centropages kroyeri were investigated in relation to biotic (chlorophyll a, phytoplankton and microplankton) and abiotic (temperature and salinity) parameters at a monitoring station located in Bizerte Channel, northern Tunisia. The monitoring was carried out between July 2004 and December 2004, according to two temporal sampling strategies. First, during July, the supposed maximum abundance period of C. kroyeri, daily sampling was conducted. Thereafter, sampling was carried out weekly until the end of the sampling period. The temporal variability of the environmental factors in relation to the reproductive traits of C. kroyeri revealed, first, that temperature is important in controlling the reproduction and dynamics of this species, and second, that the quantity and quality of food available in the field also strongly influence its reproduction. On several sampling dates, the output of certain reproductive traits such as hatching success after 24 h was very weak. It is possible that C. kroyeri produced resting eggs during the study period. Nerveless, the analysis of the phytoplankton during these periods showed that low reproductive activity may have been caused by low phytoplankton quantity and/or by the dominant presence of certain diatom species that are supposed to have an inhibitory effect on the reproductive traits of C. kroyeri, especially on egg hatching success.Among the considered external parameters, temperature and food quality and availability seem to be the most important factors for the reproduction and dynamics of C. kroyeri. Under these biotic and abiotic field conditions, this copepod seems able to modulate the abundance of its population while controlling its reproduction.  相似文献
