Coastal marine seagrass ecosystems are important nursery grounds for commercially and recreationally important species, and they serve as key settlement and recruitment sites for other species. We investigated several years (2001-2003) where episodic settlement events of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) occurred in Barnegat Bay, NJ, USA. Population assessment indicated that blue mussels settled in eelgrass beds (Zostera marina) in late spring with peak densities exceeding 170,000 m−2. Based on calculated filtration rates of M. edulis, we determined that for at least 53 days in 2001, the density and size distribution of M. edulis were sufficient to filter the water column volume in excess of twice a day, with maximum calculated filtration rates exceeding 8 m3 water m−2 day−1. While the settlement event in 2001 was very localized, in 2003, the settlement event was considerably more widespread throughout the bay, with maximum settling densities exceeding 175,000 individuals m−2. Associated with these high densities, maximum calculated filtration rates exceeded 15 m3 water m−2 day−1. This filtration potential may have impeded the localized development of a brown-tide (Aureococcus anophagefferens) bloom in 2001, which occurred in other regions of the bay, but the widespread settlement event seen in 2003 may have impeded the development of any brown-tide blooms in Barnegat Bay during that summer. The decline in mussel densities throughout the summer may be a result of elevated water temperatures in this back bay, but at one site, the high settlement of M. edulis was followed by a substantial migration (>40 individuals m−2) of small sea stars (Asterias forbesii). In 2001, A. forbesii was a significant factor in reducing M. edulis density by the end of the summer at the Barnegat Inlet site and a community level assessment showed significant positive correlations between mussel aggregations and sea star densities (r=0.68-0.73, P<0.001). At this same site in 2003, the sea stars were again present in high densities (26 m−2) and were a potential mechanism for mussel decline. In other regions of the bay, sea star densities are very low, but numerous other predatory species exist, including blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus), green crabs (Carcinus maenus), spider crabs (Libinia spp.), and several Xanthid crabs. Given the high mussel densities seen in this study and the considerable predation by sea stars and other benthic predators, the benthic-pelagic coupling which these mussels provide in this system contributes to the high secondary production in these grass beds.  相似文献

Effects of two presumably dominant competitors, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis and the barnacle Balanus improvisus on recruitment, population dynamics and community structure on hard substrata were experimentally investigated in the subtidal Kiel Fjord, Western Baltic. The hypothesis that blue mussels and/or barnacles are local dominants and strongly influence succession and community structure was tested by monitoring succession in the presence and absence of simulated predation on either or both species. Manipulations included blue mussel removal, barnacle removal, combined blue mussel and barnacle removal, as well as a control treatment for natural (non-manipulated) succession. In the second part of the experiment, recovery from the treatments was monitored over 1 year.During the manipulative phase of the experiment, blue mussels had a negative effect on recruitment of species, whereas barnacles had no significant effect. Even so, a negative synergistic effect of blue mussels and barnacles was detected. Calculation of species richness and diversity H′ (Shannon Index) showed a negative synergistic effect of blue mussels and barnacles on community structure. Additionally, diversity H′ was negatively affected by the dominant competitor M. edulis. These effects were also detectable in the ANOSIM-Analysis. The non-manipulative phase of the experiment brought about a drastic loss of diversity and species richness. Blue mussels dominated all four communities. Barnacles were the only other species still being able to coexist with mussels. Effects of simulated predation disappeared fast.Thus, in the absence of predation on blue mussels, M. edulis within a few months dominates available space, and diversity of the benthic community is low. In contrast, when mussel dominance is controlled by specific predators, more species may persist and diversity remains high.  相似文献

Benthic ecologists and palaeoecologists usually associate soft bottoms with infaunal species. On the sublittoral muddy soft bottoms in the inner Gulf of Trieste, however, a complex epifauna is developed, whose biomass, structural features and taphonomy is investigated here. The total biomass amounted to an average of 556 g wet weight/m2 and is strongly dominated by suspension feeders, followed by predators and deposit feeders. The biomass can be divided into two major groups: biomass on benthic islands (isolated and small-sized rockgrounds and shellgrounds which are embedded in or lie on the sediment) and sediment dwellers. The former category includes so-called multi-species clumps, which make up 92.5% of the total biomass. The latter category encompasses organisms that inhabit the sediment surface itself. The epigrowth on benthic islands makes up 84.6% of total epifaunal biomass and is exclusively represented by suspension feeders. Serpulids are strongly dominant, followed by ascidians, sponges, anemones and bivalves. The vagile organisms associated with multi-species clumps represent 7.9% of the total epifauna and are also mostly suspension feeders. The echino-derms Ophiothrix quinquetnaculata and Cucumaria planci are the two dominant forms, followed by crustaceans and echinoids. Soft-bottom dwellers represent only 7.5% of total epifaunal biomass and consist mainly of deposit feeders and predators. Three different post-mortem pathways can be recognized for the studied epifauna. Taphonomic loss due to selective preservation is the most important taphonomic process shaping the death assemblage and affects especially the soft-bodied epigrowth on benthic islands. Mineralized epigrowth and shelled soft-bottom dwellers are the main source of benthic islands. Vagile faunas on such islands, in contrast, are strongly affected by disarticulation / fragmentation and their body parts contribute considerably to the sediment composition. The death assemblage does not reflect the trend of low biomass near the shallow stations off the mouth of the Isonzo River and higher biomass at most stations positioned further away from the river and in deeper water (> 10 m), but acccurately reflects the borders of the epifauna, which coincide with the sedimentary facies and the preponderance of the suspension-feeding life habit.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, we investigated byssus production in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, as affected by the excretory-secretory products (ESPs) of the mussel itself and some marine invertebrates: the predatory starfish Asterias rubens, and organisms competing with mussels in White Sea fouling communities—a bivalve Hiatella arctica, the solitary ascidians Styela rustica and Molgula citrine, and a sponge Halichondria panicea. The number of attachment disks produced by a mussel per day and the thickness of byssal threads were estimated. Excretory-secretory products of H. arctica and M. citrine had no effect on the number of attachment disks, while ESPs of S. rustica, H. panacea and A. rubens stimulated mussels to produce attachment plaques. The activity of the mussel was slightly increased at low levels of its own ESPs in seawater. The thickness of byssal threads decreased with an increase in the ESPs of mussels in seawater, but it increased in experiments with the ESPs of any other species tested.  相似文献

Recruitment is an important process in regulating many marine benthic communities and many studies have examined factors controlling the dispersal and distribution of larval immigrants. However, benthic species also have early post-settlement life-stages that are dramatically different from adult and larval stages. Predation on these stages potentially impacts measured recruitment and the benthic populations and communities that ultimately develop.We examined the consequences of post-settlement predation on 1-day-old to 1-month-old recruits of sessile invertebrates at two field sites in southern New England. One site (Breakwater) was in a protected area with few predators and the other (Pine Island) was <1 km away in an open coast area with three different predator guilds: small and large invertebrates and fish. The Breakwater site had been dominated for >10 years by colonial and solitary ascidians. These species were absent from the Pine Island site which was dominated by bryozoans. Our goal was to examine whether post-settlement predation influenced the development and subsequent structure of the epifaunal community.Here we examine long-term changes in community development resulting from post-settlement predation, and contrast these results to those of earlier experiments examining the reductions in observed recruitment by post-settlement predation. Our first long-term experiment examined natural community development at the two sites and whether transplanted communities changed when exposed to the different levels of predation at these sites. The communities that developed at both sites were consistently different from each other and similar to resident communities at their respective sites. On panels transplanted from the Breakwater to Pine Island, solitary ascidians and the colonial ascidian, Botryllus schlosseri, suffered high mortalities on both caged and uncaged treatments, indicative of predation by small predators that could enter cages. Some solitary ascidians did survive inside cages and the colonial ascidian, Botrylloides violaceus, became dominant on all transplanted treatments. On panels transplanted from Pine Island to the Breakwater, ascidians invaded and dominated all treatments except those that were originally caged at Pine Island.In the second long-term experiment, natural communities were allowed to develop on panels exposed at the Breakwater for 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. Each set was transplanted to three treatments at Pine Island: open uncaged pilings, caged pilings to exclude fish and large invertebrates, and racks suspended above the bottom to exclude all predators. When 1-week-old communities were transplanted, after 2-3 weeks only bryozoans were found on the open and caged pilings, while colonial ascidians dominated the suspended rack treatment. When older 2-week-old communities were transplanted, colonial ascidians also became dominant in the caged piling treatment and when 3- and 4-week-old communities were transplanted colonial ascidians dominated all three treatments. Solitary ascidians were never abundant on open pilings exposed to fish and large benthic invertebrate predators.Post-settlement predator-prey interactions involved newly settled and juvenile life-stages of a variety of prey species and many invertebrate and vertebrate predator species. The effects of these interactions on recruitment did result in differences in the development and eventual species composition of the communities, even though predators had little if any effect on the adults of the prey species.  相似文献

Biotic interactions within benthic megafauna were studied from quantitative dredge samples to investigate their role in the persistence of low scallop, Pecten maximus, stocks in the Bay of Brest. The distributions of 148 species of the megafauna and of four age classes of Pecten maximus were sampled. Suspension feeders dominate all megabenthic assemblages within the bay. This domination can be related to Crepidula fornicata spreading in the bay; however, no direct competition for food between scallops and the slipper limpet (introduced species) has been observed. On the other hand, Crepidula spreading leads to major changes in sediment type (silting) in the bay owing to biodeposit production, and silting would be a major factor inducing the decrease in Pecten maximus distribution. Predation would not be limiting. Within 10 years, one may predict a strong decrease in the area colonized by scallops in the bay.  相似文献

Experiments have been carried out on water transport in the ascidians Styela clava Herdman and Ascidiella aspersa (Müller), using a direct and an indirect method in both running and static sea water at various temperatures. Weight-specific rates, in running water at 10°C, ranged from 78 to 175 ml/min/g dry tissue weight for Styela clava and from 53 to 130 ml/min/g for Ascidiella aspersa.Experiments in a closed circulation showed that transport rates were sensitive to the conditions of water flow, falling to a low level within a few minutes or hours of the circulation being stopped. Rates of water transport of both species in static water, as determined by both methods, were lower than those from running water using the direct method.Results reported in the literature suggest that feeding behaviour in bivalve molluscs and some ascidians shows a similar sensitivity to some environmental conditions.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments showed that the mussel Mytilus edulis aggregated more intensely around living organisms (the bivalve Hiatella arctica and the solitary ascidian Styela rustica, which commonly co‐occur with mussels in fouling communities) than around inanimate objects. When exposed to an inanimate object, mussels attached their byssal threads primarily to the substrate, close to the object, but when exposed to a living organism, they attached their byssal threads directly to the organism. The ascidian was more intensely covered with byssal threads than was the bivalve. Mussel attachment to the ascidians was apparently determined by the physical characteristics of the tunic and to a lesser extent by the excretion‐secretion products released by S. rustica. This study indicates that mussels can use byssus threads as a means of entrapment of potential competitors for space. It remains unclear why mussels preferentially attached to ascidians compared to the bivalve. This can be explained either by competitive interactions, or by attractiveness of the ascidian tunic as an attachment substratum.  相似文献

In Limfjorden, Denmark, an extensive mussel fishery exploits the wild stocks of Mytilus edulis with annual landings of 80,000–100,000 t of mussels. During the last 10 years the impact of mussel dredging on the ecosystem has been studied, including the effect of resuspension of sediment and nutrients and the impoverishment of in- and epi-fauna assemblages. Furthermore, dredging changes the physical structure and complexity of the seabed which affects mussel growth and interactions among zoobenthic species. The blue mussel constitutes the dominant fraction of the zoobenthic suspension feeders, and is important for the transport of material and energy from the pelagic to benthic systems and the control of phytoplankton biomass. In order to evaluate the impact on clearance capacity of a reduction in mussel densities due to mussel dredging, mussel filtration activity measured in situ has been related to the mixing of the water column and the amount of near-bed phytoplankton. Fishery practice for mussel dredging in Limfjorden is discussed in relation to its known impact on the ecosystem and the ecological role of the mussels, and modifications towards an ecosystem management approach and a more sustainable fishery are suggested. The suggested modifications include: a fishery practice where the mussel beds are thinned out when the mussels have attained good quality, and a transplantation practice of mussels from areas with a high mortality to areas with a high growth rate. Both practices intensify the production in a certain area, leaving other areas open for alternative production or for permanent closure for the benefit of the benthic flora and fauna. In addition, other shellfish species represent interesting new resources for fishing or aquaculture. Habitat restoration, such as the relaying of mussel shells from the mussel industry, is another important management tool that should be included in an ecosystem management approach of the mussel fishery. Epibionts of mussels can have detrimental effects on their basibionts,such as reduced growth rates, lower fecundity, increased mortalityand an enhanced risk of dislodgement of the overgrown bivalvesdue to stronger hydrodynamic forces. In blue mussels Mytilusedulis, the epibiotic American slipper limpet Crepidula fornicatareduces growth and survival. In a field experiment we testedthe hypothesis that an enhanced byssus thread production withhigh energetic costs for the mussels due slipper limpet epibiontsis the underlying mechanism for the epibiont burden. Byssusthread production in overgrown mussels was twice as high asin unfouled M. edulis (11 ± 0.9 and 5.4 ± 0.6byssus threads/mussel/day, respectively). A control experimentrevealed intermediate byssus thread production (8.4 ±0.8 byssus threads/mussel/day) in mussels cleaned of C. fornicataat the beginning of the experiments, indicating that C. fornicatais responsible for the effects observed. We conclude that increasedbyssus production in fouled M. edulis is a functional responseto higher drag caused by epibionts and that it is associatedwith increased energy expenditure that reduces allocation ofresources for other processes such as growth, reproduction andsurvival. Such indirect effects of epibionts, mediated by anenhanced byssus production, may be widespread in byssus-producingbivalves, with important implications for their population dynamics. Biofouling ascidians are ubiquitous in coastal ecosystems and are among the main colonizers of aquaculture gear. Our study tested the hypothesis that the transport, removal, and transfer of fouling ascidian species by aquaculturists provide a mechanism for concentration and distribution of harmful-algal cells to new areas. Wild-caught specimens of common, biofouling ascidian species (Styela clava, Ciona intestinalis, Molgula manhattensis, Botrylloides violaceus, Didemnum vexillum, and Botryllus schlosseri) were exposed individually to cultured strains of co-occurring harmful algae (Prorocentrum minimum, Alexandrium fundyense, Alexandrium monilatum, Karenia brevis, Aureococcus anophagefferens, or Heterosigma akashiwo) at simulated bloom cell densities of each HAB species. After feeding, ascidians were transferred to ultrafiltered seawater. Immediately after exposure, and after 24 and 48 h in ultrafiltered seawater, biodeposits were collected and observed microscopically for the presence of intact, potentially viable cells. Subsamples of biodeposits were transferred into culture tubes with ultrafiltered seawater and monitored for algal growth during 8 weeks. Cells of all HAB species were found to pass intact through the ascidian digestive system, remained viable, and in many cases were capable of re-establishing populations at least 48 h post-ingestion. The results of our study will inform industry and managers of the potential threat and ecological impact of spreading biofouling ascidians, and practices to mitigate adverse impacts. Additionally, these management practices have been formally incorporated into a new cost-share program developed to help shellfish producers prevent the further spread of ascidians and associated HAB species.  相似文献

The species composition and spatial and trophic structures of the macrobenthos communities of the Ermolinskaya Bay were studied, and the main changes that had occurred since previous explorations (the 1960s) were analyzed. The most significant changes in the spatial structure of the macrobenthos community (species diversity, population density and biomass, and similarities of the species’ distribution) were observed with regard to the sea level zone: the most pronounced at the upper littoral, followed by the middle littoral, lower littoral, and sublittoral. The longitudinal gradient of the community structure (from the innermost area seaward) was pronounced less strongly. Altogether, four macrobenthos communities can be identified in Ermolinskaya Bay; they differ in species composition, diversity, population density and biomass, and trophic structure: (1) community of the upper littoral with the dominance of collecting deposit feeders, Hydrobia ulvae, and scrapers, Littorina saxatilis; (2) community of the middle littoral with the prevalence of deposit feeders, Hydrobia ulvae and Macoma balthica, seston feeders, Mya arenaria, and, to a lesser extent, Mytilus edulis; (3) community of the lower littoral with the domination of the filtering organisms, Mytilus edulis, to a lesser extent collecting deposit feeders, Hydrobia ulvae and Macoma balthica, and scrapers, Littorina littorea; and (4) community of the sublittoral, where the leading positions belong to the group of collecting deposit feeders, Macoma balthica, to a lesser extent also Hydrobia ulvae (in the innermost area) and Capitella capitata, Arenicola marina (in the marine part of the bay). The gradual siltation of the bay and the reduction of its connection to the sea have led to the development of a littoral complex of species in the sublittoral, whereas the species typical at the sublittoral in the 1960s are now mainly found at the outlet of the bay.  相似文献

The mutual effects of several fouling species (the bivalves Mytilus edulis and Hiatella arctica and a solitary ascidian Styela rustica) on their growth rate and mortality were studied through field experiments. The interactions between S. rustica and H. arctica appeared to be the least antagonistic. In contrast, the mussel was the most “aggressive” species with regard to both competitors. It was observed that the ascidians died, because they were intensively braided and gummed up with the byssus threads of the mussels. However, in some cases the intraspecific competition was stronger than the interspecific one.  相似文献

Ascidians are sessile marine chordate invertebrates found along seashores worldwide and are typically regarded as invasive organisms. Knowledge concerning their global genetic structure and subsequent invasive potential is limited. Here, we identified three ascidians—Ciona robusta, Ciona savignyi, and Styela clava from the northeast region of China using morphological characteristics and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) as genetic marker. We additionally used phylogenetics to aid in the identification of these three species. The results of a population genetic analysis showed that among the three species, the level of haplotype diversity was particularly high within C. savignyi, and nucleotide diversity varied moderately. We divided the three species separately into native and invasive populations using 170 cox1 sequences from global resources to explore population genetic structure and invasive potential. Although in the network analysis Ciona spp. formed haplogroups of native and invasive populations, some haplotypes were still shared. We found that the haplotypes did not cluster within the network of S. clava. Our AMOVA results also showed that Ciona spp. had a weak genetic structure, and less genetic differentiation was present in S. clava. These data suggest that there are extensive incursions of these three ascidians into different geographical regions. Global comparisons of ascidian populations will help in the understanding of their population genetic structure and invasive potential, hence providing important insights regarding conservation as well as management.  相似文献

In order to examine the importance of the settling of large particles to the food supply and feeding behavior of a benthic culture of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, we investigated the tidal dynamics of large (>0.5 mm diameter) marine aggregates, commonly known as marine snow, during three tidal cycles in July 1998 at a shallow, subtidal, low current flow regime site along the coast of Maine (Shorey Cove, Roque Island, Englishman's Bay, Maine).In situ, optically measured marine snow showed a distinct tidal signal displaying an increase in size and abundance through high tide with a peak on the early ebb tide as it settled to the bottom. Marine snow volume ranged an order of magnitude through the tidal cycle, from under 8 to over 80 mm3 l−1. An increase in the in situ marine snow volume corresponded with an increase in benthic mussel feeding activity (from 20% to 60% of maximum exhalant siphon area, which is an estimate of pumping rate) and maximum rates of pseudofeces production by the mussels during periods of low tidal current speeds. In contrast, mussels from the same population feeding on surface waters in shipboard chambers produced no pseudofeces and had high pumping rates (80-100% maximum exhalant siphon area) over the whole tidal period. A second peak in benthic mussel pumping rates also occurred during flood tide.Food quality was lower in the bottom waters due to significantly higher particulate inorganic matter (PIM, >2 mg l−1) when compared with the surface waters. PIM accounted for 95% of the total settled mass flux of 3.4 g m−2 day−1 measured in sediment traps deployed 1 m off the bottom, with organic carbon representing only 2.5% of the mass flux during the mid-summer conditions. At low-current sites such as Shorey Cove, Roque Island, Maine, the settling of marine snow provides an important additional source of food, albeit of low quality, to benthic populations of blue mussels.  相似文献

Viruses on organic aggregates such as transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) are not well investigated. The number of TEP-attached viruses was assessed along trophic gradients in the southwestern lagoon of New Caledonia by determining the fraction of viruses removed after magnetic isolation of TEP. In order to isolate TEP magnetically, TEP were formed in the presence of magnetic beads from submicrometer precursors collected along the trophic gradients. The mixed aggregates of TEP-beads-viruses were removed from solution with a magnetic field. The percentage of viruses associated with newly formed TEP averaged 8% (range, 3 to 13%) for most of the stations but was higher (ca. 30%) in one bay characterized by the low renewal rate of its water mass. The number of viruses (N) attached to TEP varied as a function of TEP size (d [in micrometers]) according to the formulas N = 100d1.60 and N = 230d1.75, respectively, for TEP occurring in water masses with short (i.e., <40 days) and long (i.e., >40 days) residence times. These two relationships imply that viral abundance decreases with TEP size, and they indicate that water residence time influences viral density and virus-bacterium interactions within aggregates. Our data suggest that the fraction of viruses attached to TEP is highest in areas characterized by a low renewal rate of the water mass and can constitute at times a significant fraction of total virus abundance. Due to the small distance between viruses and hosts on TEP, these particles may be hot spots for viral infection.  相似文献

Over the past 30 years southern New England, USA has been invaded by several species of ascidians, including Botrylloides violaceus, Diplosoma listerianum, Styela clava, and Ascidiella aspersa. These species have become dominate in coastal embayments and marinas but are usually absent from more open water coastal areas. A colonial ascidian, Didemnum sp. has invaded southern New England during the past 10 years and we first observed this species in eastern Long Island Sound in 2000. It has become the dominant at several field sites while remaining in low abundance at others. We conducted an experiment at two places, a protected marina and an open coast site, to examine its ability to compete with the established fouling community. Small colonies of Didemnum were transplanted onto panels with communities that varied in age from one to four weeks old and these treatments along with controls with only Didemnum were exposed at both sites. In most treatments Didemnum became a dominant species in the communities at both sites but it reached higher abundances at the open coast site. Potential causes of the observed differences are predation on other species of ascidians at the open coast site reducing recruitment of these species and competition, lower tolerance for elevated temperatures at the marina site, or other environmental parameters that might affect growth rates.  相似文献

Suspension feeders concentrate organic material from the water column and enhance deposition to the surrounding benthos. On the South Fork of the Eel River (Mendocino, California) two suspension feeders, the freshwater mussel Margaritifera falcata and Pacific lamprey larvae Lampetra tridentata, co‐occur in areas with low flow velocities and boundary sheer stresses. We investigated mussel/lamprey larvae interactions, and their impacts on nutrient and organic matter cycling, in flow‐through enclosures placed where lamprey larvae and mussels naturally occurred. Over the 80‐day study, lamprey larvae grew faster in the presence of mussels and in food addition treatments. Our results suggest that lamprey larvae benefit from native mussels, and that lamprey populations and organic matter retention in rivers may decrease with the rapid decline of native freshwater mussels.  相似文献

During the implementation of a large project aimed to investigate the benthic community structures of the Sea of Marmara, specimens of the invasive ascidian species Styela clava were collected on natural substrata (rocks) at 10 m depth at one locality (Karamürsel) in İzmit Bay. The specimens were mature, containing gametes, indicating that the species had become established in the area. The Sea of Marmara seems to provide suitable conditions for this species to survive and form proliferating populations.  相似文献
