The breeding chronology, food habits, growth and reproductivesuccess of Cassin's Auklets, Ptychoramphus aleuticus, were investigatedon Triangle Island, British Columbia. The breeding of Cassin'sAuklets coincides with the plankton bloom in the eastern NorthPacific. Cassin's Auklets in British Columbia feed their youngmostly large copepods, Calanus cristatus, and euphausiids, chieflyThysanoessa spinifera, but fish was an important food item inone summer. Chicks which hatched early, grew and survived betterthan late-hatched chicks and this may relate to food availability.Adults and chicks on Triangle Island were heavier than thoseon South Farallon Island, California. The heavier weight andgreater numbers of Cassin's Auklets in British Columbia as comparedwith regions to the south may relate to Calanus cristatus availabilityand abundance in northern areas.  相似文献

In a series of dawn-to-dusk studies, we examined the natureand accessibility of nectar rewards for pollinating insectsby monitoring insect visits and the secretion rate and standingcrop of nectar in the British native plant species Salvia pratensis,Stachys palustris, S. officinalis, Lythrum salicaria, Linariavulgaris, the non-native Calendula officinalis, Petunia x hybrida,Salvia splendens, and the possibly introduced Saponaria officinalis.We also compared single with double variants ofLotus corniculatus, Saponaria officinalis, Petunia x hybrida andCalendula officinalis. All the British species studied are nectar-rich and are recommendedfor pollinator-friendly gardens. They showed maximal secretionrates of about 10–90 µg sugar per flower h-1, andmost had mean standing crops of about 5–60 µg sugarper flower. In all British species studied, the corolla wasdeep enough for the relatively long-tongued bumblebee Bombuspascuorum, but the shallower flowers of Lythrum salicaria werealso much visited by shorter-tongued bees and hoverflies, aswell as by butterflies. The exotic Salvia splendens, presumablycoevolved with hummingbirds in the Neotropics, has such deepflowers that British bees cannot reach the nectar except bycrawling down the corolla. With a secretion rate approaching300 µg sugar per flower h-1and little depletion by insects,S. splendens accumulated high standing crops of nectar. S. splendens,and single and double flowers of the two probably moth-pollinatedspecies Petunia x hybrida and Saponaria officinalis, receivedfew daytime visits despite abundant nectar but Calendula waswell visited by hoverflies and bees. We compared single anddouble variants of Lotus corniculatus,Petunia x hybrida andCalendula officinalis, and also Saponaria officinalis, the lastbeing probably introduced in Britain (Stace, 1997 New floraof the British Isles. 2nd edn. Cambridge: Cambridge UniversityPress). In Petunia, Saponaria and Lotus, double flowers secretedlittle or no nectar. In Calendula, where doubling involved achange in the proportion of disc and ray florets rather thanmodification of individual flower structure, double and singlecapitula had similar standing crops of nectar. Except inCalendula, exotic or double flowers were little exploited by insect visitors.In the exotics, this was probably due to the absence or scarcityof coevolved pollinators, coupled, in double flowers, with theabsence of nectar. The apical structure and the development of the thalli of allthe British species of Gelidium and Pterocladia have been investigated;the development of G. pulchellum is described in detail. Eachaxis is terminated by one or more apical cells, which by theirsegmentation form the tissues of the thallus. An axial filamentis distinct for a short distance behind each apical cell, butsecondary pit-connexions develop rapidly so that in sectionthe mature axis has the appearance of a multi-axial structure. Lateral branches of the frond develop by the segmentation ofthe lateral branch apical cells, which are formed by the transformationof superficial cortical cells, either in the meristematic ormature parts of the axes. The extreme variability of externalappearance is due principally to the indeterminate origin ofall lateral branches. The thallus in the British species of Gelidium and Pterocladiaconsists of erect fronds borne on creeping axes. The relativeproportions of the frond and creeping axes in various speciesand their survival through adverse conditions are discussed.  相似文献

A simple technique for comparing and quantifying the ventilationcapacity of vessels used for plant tissue culture is described.Ethylene was injected into culture vessels and its rate of lossmonitored by gas chromatography. From the resulting exponentialdecay curves, the time in hours for half the ethylene to belost (t50) was calculated and used to compare different containersand sealing methods. Cultures of Ficus lyrata Warb. and Gerberajamesonii Bolus grown for up to 28 d in plastic vessels sufficientlywell-sealed to generate t50 values of approx. 16 h, accumulatedethylene and carbon dioxide in association with depleted oxygen.The relationship between carbon dioxide accumulation and oxygendepletion within culture vessels indicated little if any anaerobicrespiration. Gerbera explants did not appear to be affectedby these gaseous environments. However, in Ficus, leaf expansionwas approximately halved, although fresh and dry mass of wholeshoots was not decreased. The smaller leaf size is attributedto the action of accumulated ethylene, because when the gaswas absorbed with 'Ethysorb' granules or its action inhibitedby 2,5–norbornadiene, leaf growth was normal. The removalof carbon dioxide with potassium hydroxide did not enhance theethylene effect, indicating little if any antagonism of ethyleneaction by carbon dioxide. Shoots of potato (Solanum tuberosumL. cv. Red Craig's Royal) were shortened in sealed culture vessels,in association with swelling, diageotropism and miniaturizationof the leaves. When tuber production was induced by decreasingthe photoperiod, increasing the sucrose concentration and includingcytokinin in the medium, partial sealing promoted conspicuoushypertrophy of the lenticels. These responses of potato wereprevented if the ethylene absorbant mercuric perchlorate wasenclosed together with the cultures. Bennett and Smith (Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Societyof London B274:227-274; B334: 309-345) and Bennett, Smith andHeslop-Harrison (Proceedings of the Royal Society of London,B216: 179-199) published lists of nuclear DNA amounts estimatedfor 1612 angiosperm species collected from 163 sources datedbetween 1951 and 1986. Subsequently, interest in genome sizein angiosperms and its significance has continued, and manynew DNA estimates were published during 1986-1994. Their inaccessibility,and the flow of enquiries for such information, shows that afurther compilation is needed. This paper presents a supplementarylist of nuclear DNA C-values for 105 sources for 899 angiospermspecies not listed in the above-mentioned compilations, plus284 additional estimates for 208 species already listed by them.The data are assembled primarily for reference purposes, withspecies listed in alphabetical order, rather than by any taxonomicscheme. Some advantages and limitations of flow cytometry, nowincreasingly used to quantify DNA C-values in plants, are reviewed.Recent reports regarding the occurrence and extent of intraspecificvariation in genome size are also discussed. While some examplesare real, others reflect technical shortcomings. Work has begunto combine the genome size data compiled in this and the above-mentionedpapers into a unified data base, and to present the informationin separate lists, with species in alphabetical and systematicorders, respectively. In the late 1930s networks of amateur observers across Britain were collecting data on birds (British Trust for Ornithology), aircraft (Royal Observer Corps) and society itself (Mass Observation). This paper concentrates on birdwatching practice in the period 1930–1955. Through an examination of the construction of birdwatching's subjects, the Observers, and their objects, birds, it is argued that amateur strategies of scientific observation and record reflected, and were part-constitutive of, particular versions of ecological, national and social identity in this period. The paper examines how conflicts between a rural, organicist Britishness and a modern, planner-preservationist Britishness were elaborated and contained within the figure of the birdwatcher and within the institutional epistemologies of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the British Trust for Ornithology. Such conflicts are shown to be embedded in the structuring of visual perception in different strategies of bird and aircraft identification, particularly between analytic and gestalt methods; the paper examines, using the related ‘field-science’ of aircraft recognition, the importance of identificatory processes in the construction of the Observer, and concludes by examining whether tensions between organicist and scientific discourses were in any sense resolved by the end of this period.  相似文献

On a sandy beach at Shoal Bay in Princess Royal Harbour, Albany,southwestern Western Australia, lives a small muricid gastropodthat feeds virtually monotonically on the overwhelmingly dominantresident bivalve Katelysia scalarina. Lepsiella paivae livesburied in the sand and attacks its prey within it. Because ofits small size (<13 mm shell height), bivalve prey isalso small and this study demonstrates a preference for K. scalarinaof 5 mm shell length, i.e. juveniles. Laboratory experimentsalso suggested a possible preference for attack of the rightvalve. Lepsiella paivae can and does, however, attack largerprey (up to 15 mm shell length), but cannot consume themcompletely. A second visit to Princess Royal Harbour in theAustral winter, when there was no juvenile K. scalarina present,showed L. paivae to be attacking at the sand surface, also bydrilling, the small (<4 mm) gastropod Hydrococcus brazieri(Hydrococcidae). SEM studies of experimentally determined drillholes of L. paivae show them to be of variable form, some straightsided, others bevelled (like a naticid) and <500 µmin diameter. On this sheltered Southern Ocean beach, therefore,L. paivae has specialized to attack juvenile bivalves by burrowingafter them. Monthly samples of L. australis, V. spongiartum, P. bicolorand D. cuneata were collected over a period of 12 months fromPrincess Royal Harbour, Western Australia. Preliminary informationon densities and biomass is given. Gonad histology points toseasonal reproductive cycles with autumn spawning in P. bicolorand D. cuneata and irregular spawning in V. spongiantm and L.australis. However, L. australis did show two peaks of larvalbrooding in the study period. Length-frequency data are discussedin the light of the proposed reproductive patterns for the fourspecies. Allometric relationships between length and both heightand width for all species are described and their value to eachspecies assessed. The structure and development of the reproductive organs andcarposporophyte are described for two British species of Gelidium,G. latifolium (Grev.) Born. & Thur. and G. pulchellum (Turn.)Kütz. The gonimoblast does not develop directly from theunchanged carpogonium, as was thought by Kylin, but a swollenmultinucleate cell of irregular outline is formed first, eitherfrom the carpogonium alone, or by the fusion of the carpogoniumand certain neighbouring cells; the gonimoblast develops fromlong, non-septate processes of this multi-nucleate cell. Thesignificance of the fusion of the carpogonium and certain vegetativecells is discussed in relation to the various definitions ofthe auxiliary cell which have been proposed. This paper deals with the development of the sexual organs (intheir respective nemathecia), the carposporophyte and the tetrasporophyteof Polyides caprinus in the British Isles. The carposporophyteis of the ‘diffuse type’ and resembles that of someother Cryptonemiales and some Gigartinales (sensu Kylin) inessential features. DNA amount is a widely used biodiversity character. As knownDNA C-values represent the global angiosperm flora poorly, bettercoverage of taxonomic groups is needed, including at the familiallevel. A workshop, sponsored byAnnals of Botany , was held atthe Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1997. Its key aim was to identifymajor gaps in our knowledge of plant DNA C-values and recommendtargets for new work to fill them by international collaboration.In 1997 C-values were known for approx. 150 families, meaningthere was no estimate for most angiosperm families (approx 68%).The workshop recommended a goal of complete familial representationby 2002, as a main target for angiosperms. Bennett et al. (Annalsof Botany86: 859–909, 2000) presented a fifth supplementarylist of angiosperm C-values from 70 original sources which includedfirst C-values for 691 species. Only 12 (1.7%) of these werefirst C-values for unrepresented families, so the need to improvefamilial representation was substantially unmet. We began newwork to address this in September 1999, and now report firstDNA C-values for 25 angiosperm families. Such targeting seemsessential to achieve the goal of familial coverage set by the1997 workshop within 5 years. 4C values range from 0.67 pg (similartoArabidopsis thaliana ) in Amoreuxia wrightii(Cochlospermaceae)to 7.49 pg in Deutzia prunifolia(Hydrangeaceae). Calcified angiosperm hydrophyte roots, Lacunoradix headonensisgen. et sp.nov., are described from the Upper Eocene, LowerHeadon Beds of Hordle Cliff, Hampshire. These are the firststructurally preserved angiosperm roots to be found in positionof growth in the British Tertiary. A cytological investigation of British members of the orderLaminariales has revealed the presence of a very large X-chromosomein dividing nuclei of female gametophytes and young sporophytesof Saccorhiza polyschides. This chromosome pairs with a smallY-chromosome at meiosis. A chromosome which is conspicuouslylarger than the others has also been detected in the femalegametophytes (and young sporophytes) of Laminaria spp., Chordafilum, and Alaria esculenta. There is some evidence that thisalso pairs with a smaller chromosome. Chromosome numbers determinedduring the work are as follows: Laminaria digitata, L. saccharina,L. hyperborea, L. ochroleuca, Saccorhiza polyschides, hap-loid31 and diploid 62; Alaria esculenta, haploid 28 and diploid56; Chorda filum, haploid c. 28 and diploid c. 56  相似文献

We investigated the potential of acoustic technology for estimatingzooplankton distribution as part of an ongoing study of sockeyesalmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) production in three lakes of theFraser River system, British Columbia. Simultaneous acousticand zooplankton samples were obtained in 1 and 2 m depth incrementsfrom the surface to 30 m at mid-lake stations. We derived asignificant regression relationship (r2=0.71, n=79) betweenzooplankton biomass ranging between 5 and 220 mg m–3 andacoustic backscatter (V2). The ensuing regression model wasused to predict zooplankton biomass distribution from acousticdata collected along transects representing different lake areas.  相似文献
