Using life-history invariants, this paper develops techniques that allow the estimation of maximum sustainable yield and the fishing mortality rate that produces the maximum yield from estimates of the growth parameters, the length at first capture and the steepness of the stock recruitment relationship. This allows sustainable yields and fishing capacity to be estimated from sparse data, such as those available for developing country fisheries.  相似文献

In the conditional strategy model, divergence in reproductive phenotypes depends on whether the individual's condition is above or below a genetically determined threshold. The relative contribution of the genetic and environmental components that lead to the expression of a reproductive tactic by an individual is not well understood. In the present field study, we determined when condition diverged between males that develop the mature parr phenotype and those that do not in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). We also investigated the uniformity of the threshold value in the population. We sampled mature parr and immature males at age one, of the same population at six different sites for four consecutive years. Our study provides an example of the interaction of genotype and environment on the expression of a reproductive tactic. Size was significantly greater for future mature parr than for future immature males as early as 20 days after hatching (emergence), suggesting that there may be a parental effect component in the tactic adopted, since no exogenous feeding takes place before this time. Size advantage at emergence was maintained through the next spring at age one to different degrees depending on the year, thus suggesting the presence of an environmental component of tactic expression. Our results support the contention that within the conditional strategy, the environment faced by a male and his condition at the moment of reproduction consistently predicts neither the environment faced by his offspring nor the fitness they will obtain by expressing the same tactic as their father. Furthermore, higher mean size at a site did not always translate into a higher proportion of mature parr, therefore supporting the hypothesis that thresholds vary across habitats within the same population.  相似文献

The theoretical limits of net reproduction rates for perch, Perca fluviatilis L. and pike, Esox lucius L, have been estimated from the upper and lower limits of fecundity, growth, mortality, age of maturity and biomass of parental stock, observed in Windermere over 40 years. Differences in egg numbers due to changes in fecundity were for perch × 1.5, for pike × 2. Assuming the same mortality, a fast growing cohort would produce more eggs during its lifespan than a slow growing, for perch × 2, for pike × 9. Changes in mortality from high to low resulted in more eggs, for perch × 7, and for pike (where high mortality includes natural and fishing mortality) × 10. Change in age at first maturity from 3 to 2 years was unimportant. Biomass of parental stock varied by × 6 for perch and × 3 for pike, and number of eggs laid varied by x2 for perch and × 5 for pike. The number of recruits at age 2 years varied by × 300 for perch and × 7 for pike. It was concluded that temperature in the first summer of life and predation were of major importance in regulating the number of recruits. Ricker recruitment curves and a simple model showed that perch, but not pike, could produce maximum recruitment from minimum parental stock. For perch, but not pike, compensatory density dependent mortality increased with increased parental stock. It was concluded that responses by the perch and pike populations to a changing environment can not be of sufficient magnitude to prevent wide fluctuations in recruitment.  相似文献

Heritabilities of growth, precocious maturation and smolting were measured in 75 families of juvenile steelhead or rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss , progeny of within and between line matings (crosses) of wild, anadromous steelhead and wild, resident (lake) rainbow trout originally derived from the same anadromous stock 70 years earlier. The tagged yearling progeny were combined by line in common freshwater rearing containers and graded into three categories: mature, smolt or rearing (undifferentiated) at age 2 years. Heritabilities of precocious male maturity, smolting and growth were moderate to high, and the genetic correlation between growth and smolting was low. Smolting and precocious male maturity were highly variable among families within lines and significantly different between lines. Each of the four lines produced significant numbers of smolts at age two. Smolting and maturation were negatively genetically correlated, which may explain the persistence of smolting in the lake population despite strong selection against lake smolts; balancing selection on male maturation age may help to maintain variation for smolting. The high heritability of smolting, coupled with the inability of smolts that leave the lake to return to it indicates that the genetic potential for smolting can lie dormant or be maintained through a dynamic interaction between smolting and early maturation for decades despite complete selection against the phenotype. The results have significant implications for the preservation of threatened anadromous stocks in fresh water and the inclusion of resident fish of formerly anadromous populations, currently trapped behind long‐standing barriers to migration, as one component of the same population.  相似文献

Shetland holds a very high concentration of seabirds that feed to a large extent on sandeels Ammodytes marinus . The available data allow an assessment of the quantity of sandeels consumed by seabirds each year 1981–83, and sensitivity analysis suggests that this figure is accurate to about ±30%. Only very approximate estimates of sandeel consumption by seals and by predatory fish can be made.
From 1981 to 1983 the Shetland fishery catch averaged 45,000 tonnes of sandeels, with an estimated natural consumption of 47,000 tonnes by seabirds (predominantly Guillemots Uria aalge and Fulmars Fulmarus glacialis ). Based on sensible guesses and the little data available, consumption may have been about 25,000 tonnes by predatory fish and 9,000 tonnes by seals. The figures suggest that natural mortality of the Shetland sandeel stock in 1981–83 was considerably in excess of the figure used in VPA stock assessments. Further information is required for key variables in order to permit better estimates of sandeel stock dynamics. In particular, we need better data on numbers and diets of seals in Shetland, numbers and diets of predatory fish, diets and foraging distributions of Fulmars, especially out with the chick-rearing period. In future, sandeel biomass assessments for Shetland should incorporate estimates of predation by seabirds as this is clearly an important part of total mortality for the stock.  相似文献

The Baltic herring is one of the key elements of the pelagic ecosystem of the Baltic Sea, being of the most important commercial species of the sea. The structure and dynamics of herring populations (stocks) have been assessed and managed on international level since 1970s. Since 1990, all local herring populations have been combined and assessed as one stock (Central Baltic Herring in Sub-divisions 25–29 and 32). However, the continuously decreasing trend in stock biomass throughout almost 30-years period of observations indicates the failure of the stock management implementation of the scientific advice. The separate assessments of different stocks and results of hydro-acoustic surveys of different sub-units (herring in Sub-divisions 25–27, Sub-divisions 28, 29 and 32 and the Gulf of Riga herring) have revealed rather different situation within combined assessment unit: e.g. fishing mortality of the Gulf of Riga herring has decreased while a sharp increase in mortality is observed in the herring stocks of the North-eastern Baltic (Sub-divisions 28, 29 and 32). At the same time stock abundance and biomass of the Gulf of Riga herring have increased to record high in early 2000s allowing also higher catches. It is concluded that only separate analytical assessment of local populations combined with regular acoustical surveys and following different protection measures have proved to be a successful way in managing the herring stocks. Joint assessment and management of several populations with different structure and dynamics as one combined stock do not allow revealing the real situation and trends in its parts.  相似文献

Length and age at maturity are important life history parameters for estimating spawning stock biomass and reproductive potential of fish stocks. Bias in estimates of size and age at maturity can arise when disparate distributions of mature and immature fish within a population are not accounted for in the analysis. Here we investigate the spatial and temporal variability in observed size and age at maturity of female albacore tuna, Thunnus alalunga, using samples collected across the South Pacific. Maturity status was identified using consistent histological criteria that were precise enough to allow for mature but regenerating females to be distinguished from immature females during the non-spawning season, permitting year-round sampling for maturity estimation in albacore. Using generalised linear mixed models, we found that the proportion of mature females at length varied significantly with latitude and time of year. Specifically, females at northern latitudes (∼10–20°S, where spawning occurs) were mature at significantly smaller lengths and ages than females at southern latitudes (∼20–40°S), particularly during the spawning season (October–March). This variation was due to different geographic distributions of mature and immature fish during the year. We present a method for estimating an unbiased maturity ogive that takes into account the latitudinal variation in proportion mature at length during a given season (spawning or non-spawning). Applying this method to albacore samples from the western region of the South Pacific gave a predicted length at 50% mature of ∼87 cm fork length (4.5 years).  相似文献

The functional integrity of the neuromuscular synapse requires that sufficient numbers of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) molecules be localized on the specialized extracellular matrix between the nerve terminal and the post-synaptic membrane. Multiple interrelated levels of regulation are necessary to accomplish this complex task including the spatial and temporal restriction of AChE mRNA expression within the muscle fiber, local translation and assembly of AChE polypeptides, and focused accumulation of AChE molecules on the extracellular matrix. This is accomplished in part through the organization of other extracellular matrix molecules into a complex which further associates with acetylcholine receptors and their accompanying molecules. Finally, the mature neuromuscular junction contains molecules which can act as receptors for the attachment of AChE which in turn may allow for the turnover of this enzyme at the synapse. This brief review will focus mainly on contributions from our laboratory towards understanding the mechanisms involved in organizing AChE molecules at the neuromuscular synapse.  相似文献

The morphology and numbers of Langerhans' cells vary in epithelia with different patterns of hyperplasia and keratinization. Langerhans' cells stained for ATPase were compared at five phases of the estrous cycle in murine vaginal epithelium. The cells were more dendritic and sparsely distributed with hyperplasia and were less dendritic and more densely distributed with atrophy. Greater numbers of the cells did not accompany keratinization at estrus. Ultrastructurally, three types of Langerhans' cells were discriminated. The first type, active in protein synthesis and phagocytosis, was commonest in sloughing and atrophic epithelium. The second type, containing accumulated and dispersed, electron-dense bodies presumed to be lysosomes, predominated in hyperplastic epithelium. The third, a mature resting cell, was found only after keratinization was complete. This study shows that Langerhans' cells in murine vaginal epithelium vary in morphology and numbers with the epithelial changes of the estrous cycle which may relate to their immunological role, but does not support the contention that their distribution is important for keratinization.  相似文献

利用年龄结构产量模型(Age structured production model,ASPM)评估了印度洋黄鳍金枪鱼资源状况,同时结合亲体量-补充量曲线陡度系数和年龄组自然死亡系数的敏感性分析,描述了黄鳍金枪鱼资源的发展趋势、判断了开发状况。研究认为,陡度系数设在0.6-0.8才可能使亲体量产生出最大可持续产量(Maximum sustainable yield,MSY)的水平。采用美洲热带金枪鱼委员会推荐的自然死亡系数值时,评估结果最接近渔业现状。研究发现,随着捕捞努力量的增加,总资源量和亲体量呈逐年下降趋势,但总资源量自1990年后趋向稳定,维持在195.9-263.2万t,平均为221万t;亲体量在1994年后下降到100万t以下,1997年以后处在维持MSY所需亲体量的水平之下,目前仍呈下降趋势。补充量在渔业初期呈现大幅度波动,1978年后趋于稳定,并维持在3258.36-6583.35×106尾,平均为4687.66×106尾。未成熟鱼的数量总体较为稳定,但成熟鱼的数量出现剧减,从渔业初期的246.51×106尾减少到2005年的19.02×106尾。模型估计的总捕捞死亡系数从渔业初期开始逐渐上升,1991年后出现大幅度上升,处于0.334-0.456间,2003年时超过FMSY,捕捞产量也于2003年超过MSY。分析认为,2003年以来印度洋黄鳍金枪鱼的持续高产量被认为是不可持续,根据ASPM估算,2003-2006年均产量46.4万t,超过了MSY(36.4万t);S/SMSY为0.76;Fall/FMSY为1.39,由此判断现阶段印度洋黄鳍金枪鱼正处于过度捕捞状态。  相似文献

A stock-recruitment model with a temperature component was used to estimate the effect of an increase in temperature predicted by climate change projections on population persistence and distribution of twaite shad Alosa fallax. An increase of 1 and 2° C above the current mean summer (June to August) water temperature of 17·8° C was estimated to result in a three and six-fold increase in the population, respectively. Climate change is also predicted to result in an earlier commencement to their spawning migration into fresh water. The model was expanded to investigate the effect of any additional mortality that might arise from a tidal power barrage across the Severn Estuary. Turbine mortality was separated into two components: (1) juvenile (pre-maturation) on their out migration during their first year and on their first return to the river to spawn and (2) post-maturation mortality on adults on the repeat spawning component of the population. Under current conditions, decreasing pre-maturation and post-maturation survival by 8% is estimated to result in the stock becoming extinct. It is estimated that an increase in mean summer water temperature of 1° C would mean that survival pre and post-maturation would need to be reduced by c. 10% before the stock becomes extinct. Therefore, climate change is likely to be beneficial to populations of A. fallax within U.K. rivers, increasing survival and thus, population persistence.  相似文献

Two new microscopic techniques make it possible to obtain images of biologically interesting molecules directly in air, vacuum, or under water. Scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy both have the capacity to visualize atoms on the surface of rigid structures and provide details of molecular structure for lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. In addition to providing visualizations of individual molecules, these scanning probe techniques allow direct imaging of complexes between molecules or between molecules and higher-order subcellular structures such as membranes and cytoskeletal components. Both microscopes can be operated under a variety of ambient conditions ranging from high vacuum to above atmospheric pressure. Specimens need not be dry; both techniques have been used to image molecules in aqueous media under nearly physiological conditions. It is proposed that as these techniques mature they will allow direct observation of many molecular interactions under physiological conditions or even in vivo while they are occurring within the cell.  相似文献

The presence of heritable variation is a prerequisite for evolution, but natural selection typically reduces genetic variation. Variation can be maintained in traits under selection through spatial or temporal variation in fitness surfaces, frequency-dependent selection, or disruptive selection. We evaluated the maintenance of variation in the enantiomeric blend of pheromones employed by the bark beetle Ips pini (Say). In natural populations, we quantified fitness surfaces for mating success and progeny production. We investigated the effects of paternal pheromone blend on offspring survival by comparing the spatial scales at which pheromone blends and larval mortality agents vary. Males with extreme pheromone blends obtained up to 1.8 times as many mates who each laid equivalent numbers of eggs, producing strong disruptive selection on male pheromone blend. In combination with imperfect assortative mating that continually produces intermediate genotypes, this fitness surface is sufficient to maintain variation in a heritable trait that is strongly linked to fitness. The ultimate explanation for female preference is unknown but could be because of selection for reduced mortality from specialist predators that prefer common prey pheromone blends. Selection is most likely occurring at the scale of small resource patches within pine stands. Selection at coarser scales (pine stands) is unlikely because pheromone blends did not vary among pine stands. Selection at finer scales (within logs) is unlikely because males of similar enantiomeric blends were not aggregated on logs, and male pheromone blend did not affect the spacing to neighboring galleries. This study documents a rare case of diversifying selection in natural populations.  相似文献

Based on length frequency data, the following growth and mortality parameters were derived for the stock of Indian oil sardine, Sardinella longiceps, off the southwest coast of India: L= 21 cm, K = 1.4 year-1, Z = 4.2 year-1, M = 2.0 year-1, F = 2.2 year-1 The fishing mortality (F) required to maintain the spawning stock at the optimum level was estimated to be 1.8 year-1. At this level of fishing mortality, the maximum sustainable yield per annum was estimated around 45 × 109 in numbers and 300,000 tonnes in weight.  相似文献

Equations have been derived on the basis of general ratios of the numbers of different age groups of animals that allow to estimate the mortality coefficient in populations with stationary age structure and intensity of mortality that does not depend on age at their continuous and discontinuous replenishing by frequency of occurrence of individuals of the maximal age. The proposed method of estimation of mortality has been tested on models with different numbers of animals and age classes. The equation gives a non-biased estimate of mortality coefficient for populations with discontinuous replenishing with young individuals at very small sample sizes (less than 10 individuals).  相似文献

The composition of the metazoan parasite communities within 2 fishing zones along the Chilean coast were compared to determine the population structure of the jack mackerel Trachurus symmetricus murphyi (Nichols) in these 2 geographical locations. More than 7,780 parasites belonging to 15 taxa were collected between 1990 and 1996 in 71 samples comprised of 3,946 hosts. The same taxa were found in both fishing zones. However, jack mackerel from northern Chile had a higher abundance of cymothoid isopods, Ceratothoa spp., whereas those from southern Chile had more Rhadinorhynchus trachuri, Hysterothylacium sp. larvae, and Anisakis type I larvae. Results were similar at all community levels because all parasites had low prevalence and infracommunities had low total abundance and richness. Analyses at the component community level may be more adequate for stock identification when infracommunities are simple. There were significant differences in composition of parasite communities between years in each fishing zone, presumably as a result of the increase in offshore catches since 1994. These results reinforce the hypothesis that more than 1 ecological stock of the jack mackerel exists in the southeastern Pacific and contradict the current assumption of a single stock in the management of this heavily exploited fish species.  相似文献

The encroachment of bracken (Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn) into areas previously dominated by heather represents a threat to the ecology, agricultural economy and landscape value of many UK upland areas, including the moorland of the North York Moors National Park. The morphology of bracken, within a mature stand and at several bracken-heather interfaces, has been studied at a number of sites within the National Park. Differences have been found in the frond growth of bracken in a mature stand, at stationary stand margins, and at advancing stand margins where bracken is encroaching into heather. Frequency of fronds present on bracken rhizome growing at a stationary stand margin close to the interface with heather (1–2 m behind the boundary) are approximately the same as those found within a mature stand. At advancing margins (again 1–2 m behind the boundary), maximum frond densities were often found to exceed those present in either a mature stand or at a stationary margin. Frond numbers decline rapidly at the stand margins as distance from the stand increases. This is especially true where the front is stationary and bracken is not encroaching into heather at a significant rate. Maximum frond heights in a mature stand consistently exceed those at stand margins (even 1–2 m into the stand) and are greater at stationary margins than at advancing margins. Outlying fronds at the edges of bracken stands are generally present in greater numbers, and further into the area dominated by heather, where the margin is advancing. Heights of outlying fronds fall as distance from the bracken stand increases, as does stipe length. Fronds at the edges of bracken stands emerge each spring before those further into the stand and are therefore particularly vulnerable to frost damage. Outlying fronds are not, however, the first to emerge. Early emerging fronds reach their maximum height and eventually become senescent before later emerging fronds. Whilst most fronds emerge before the end of June a few fronds continue to emerge throughout the summer. Frond densities close to the edges of bracken stands (1–2 m into the stand) are comparable to those in a mature stand. At advancing stand margins frond densities generally exceed those in a mature stand, suggesting that a large number of potential entry points for foliage-applied herbicides are available for bracken control at the stand margins. The ratio of potential uptake points to biomass of rhizome is also greatest at the edges of the stand, and the canopy 1–2 m into the stand is usually almost completely closed. It is possible therefore, the efficacy of herbicides could be improved by the use of small scale applications, using tractors or hand-held sprayers, close to the margins of bracken stands.  相似文献

We develop a four dimensional predator-prey system in continuous time with stage-structure for both the communities. The reproduction rate of the prey and the transition rate for the predator, in our model, are assumed to be density-dependent. The stability results for the coexisting equilibrium are obtained by making use of Routh–Hurwitz criteria. Because of the density-dependent effects, numerical simulations are applied in complex situations. We observe that increasing values of the coefficients linked with density-dependent term promote the stability of the coexisting steady state. Our main focus is to understand the variation of stocks when mortality rates on different stage classes are increased. We verified that stable stock on mature predator increases with its increasing mortality rate in three different modeling frameworks. However, no such positive effect on the biomass of the immature predator occurs when immature predators are removed, culled or harvested. Therefore, we could conclude that the appearance of hydra effect on many unstructured predator-prey models is due to the mortality of the mature predator only. No hydra effect is also detected when mature prey is removed in several situations we discussed. Overall, the obtained results are new and could be interesting contribution in theoretical ecology.  相似文献

An added mortality rate of eggs, larvae and juveniles of fish populations, or impact, is assumed to be density independent. The total mortality from hatching to recruitment is represented by the fecundity, and any increment in density independent mortality implies a decrement in density dependent mortality. At high stock the condequence is an increase in stock towards a position of less resilience: at low stock less resilience is found with a decrease in stock. In general impact generates a shift of K-strategy, the self-stabilizing strategy, to r-strategy, and opportunistic one. In a fish population very little impact should be tolerated at low stock because it would prevent recovery to a management objective such as maximum sustainable yield. At high stock, impact may generate more stock at an unknown risk.  相似文献

We investigated the adaptive significance of a sexually monomorphicornament in the black swan Cygnus atratus. Both sexes grow curledfeathers on their wings (range 7–22 curled feathers perwing), which are displayed prominently in a range of socialinteractions. The number of curled feathers increased untilthe birds reached sexual maturity (at 2 years of age) but didnot vary with age thereafter. We found evidence for both sexualand social functions of the ornament. Paired, mature individualsof both sexes had higher numbers of curled feathers than unpaired,mature birds, and individuals paired assortatively with respectto curled feather number, suggesting the feathers may be involvedin mutual sexual selection. More ornamented individuals weredominant in agonistic interactions with birds of the same sexand pairing status. Highly ornamented pairs were also more likelyto maintain extended tenancy of preferred cygnet feeding areas,which resulted in improved offspring survival. The curled feathersthus appear to function as a signal of social dominance, whichis highly correlated with reproductive success and is thereforea reliable signal of parental quality in mate choice.  相似文献
