Impairment of adipose tissue and skeletal muscles accrued following type 1 diabetes is associated with protein misfolding and loss of adipose mass and skeletal muscle atrophy. Resistance training can maintain muscle mass by changing both inflammatory cytokines and stress factors in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 5-week ladder climbing resistance training program on the expression of Hsp70 and inflammatory cytokines in adipose tissue and fast-twitch flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and slow-twitch soleus muscles in healthy and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Induction of diabetes reduced body mass, while resistance training preserved FHL muscle weight in diabetic rats without any changes in body mass. Diabetes increased Hsp70 protein content in skeletal muscles, adipose tissue, and serum. Hsp70 protein levels were decreased in normal and diabetic rats by resistance training in the FHL, but not soleus muscle. Furthermore, resistance training decreased inflammatory cytokines in FHL skeletal muscle. On the other hand, Hsp70 and inflammatory cytokine protein levels were increased by training in adipose tissue. Also, significant positive correlations between inflammatory cytokines in adipose tissue and skeletal muscles with Hsp70 protein levels were observed. In conclusion, we found that in diabetic rats, resistance training decreased inflammatory cytokines and Hsp70 protein levels in fast skeletal muscle, increased adipose tissue inflammatory cytokines and Hsp70, and preserved FHL muscle mass. These results suggest that resistance training can maintain skeletal muscle mass in diabetes by changing inflammatory cytokines and stress factors such as Hsp70 in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue.  相似文献

The effect of fiber type and endurance exercise training on skeletal muscle beta-adrenoceptor properties were assessed using a direct radioligand binding technique. Six separate muscles, composed of a variety of different fiber types, were examined in treadmill trained and sedentary rats. In trained animals, sarcolemmal preparations from heart and slow twitch soleus muscle exhibited a significantly greater receptor concentration than membranes from white fast twitch glycolytic fibers of the vastus lateralis. No significant changes were observed between trained and sedentary rat muscle beta-adrenoceptor density (beta max, fmole/mg protein) or affinity (Kd, nM) within each muscle type, despite significantly increased myocardial/body weight ratios and skeletal muscle enzyme adaptations associated with the exercise program. These results suggest that muscle beta-adrenoceptor properties may be influenced in part by the motor nerve innervation to that muscle, and are further discussed with respect to a possible relationship between exercise intensity and receptor regulation.  相似文献

Contractile properties of old rat muscles: effect of increased use   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To examine how different kinds of activity affect the composition and contractile properties of aging skeletal muscle, old male rats were strength and swim trained. The mass of weights lifted during the strength training increased by 85 +/- 9% (P less than 0.05), which was accompanied by an increase by 32 +/- 5% (P less than 0.05) of the estimated force developed. The wet muscle weight of the soleus and the plantaris decreased significantly with age. The phenomenon was counteracted but not neutralized by the strength training. Twitch and tetanic tension also decreased significantly with age in both the soleus and plantaris muscle. This was avoided by the strength training. This training also significantly decreased time to peak tension and half-relaxation time of both muscles. The swim training increased the heart-to-body weight ratio by 21 +/- 5% (P less than 0.05) and the endurance of the soleus muscle. Time to peak tension and triosephosphate dehydrogenase activity of the plantaris muscle were strongly correlated (P less than 0.001) with myosin adenosinetriphosphatase activity. The results show that the composition and contractile properties of old skeletal muscle are considerably affected by strength training repeated during a substantial period of old age, whereas swim training only affects the endurance of the skeletal muscle.  相似文献

Although endurance training has been shown to profoundly affect the oxidative capacity of skeletal muscle, little information is available concerning the impact of endurance training on skeletal muscle isomyosin expression across a variety of muscle fiber types. Therefore, a 10-wk running program (1 h/day, 5 days/wk, 20% grade, 1 mile/h) was conducted to ascertain the effects of endurance training on isomyosin expression in the soleus, vastus intermedius (VI), plantaris (PLAN), red and white medial gastrocnemius (RMG and WMG), and red and white vastus lateralis muscles (RVL and WVL). Evidences of training were noted by the presence of a resting and a submaximal exercise bradycardia, as well as an enhancement in peak O2 consumption in the trained rodents relative to the nontrained controls. No evidence for skeletal muscle hypertrophy was observed subsequent to training when muscle weight was normalized to body weight. Shifts in the isomyosin profile of the trained VI, RMG, RVL, and PLAN were seen relative to the nontrained controls. Specifically, training affected the slow myosin (SM) composition of the VI by decreasing the relative content of the SM2 isoform by 14% while increasing that of the SM1 isoform (P less than 0.05). In addition, training elicited various degrees of a fast to slower myosin transformation in the RMG, RVL, and PLAN. All three muscles showed a significant reduction in the fast myosin 2 isoform (P less than 0.05), with significant increases in intermediate myosin in the RVL and PLAN along with elevations in SM2 in the RMG and PLAN (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Blood and lymphatic vessels together form the circulatory system, allowing the passage of fluids and molecules within the body. Recently we showed that lymphatic capillaries are also found in the capillary bed of skeletal muscle. Exercise is known to induce angiogenesis in skeletal muscle, but it is not known whether exercise has effects on lymphangiogenesis or lymphangiogenic growth factors. We studied lymphatic vessel density and expression of the main lymphangiogenic growth factors VEGF-C and VEGF-D and their receptor VEGFR-3 in response to acute running exercise and endurance exercise training in the skeletal muscle of healthy and diabetic mice. VEGF-C mRNA expression increased after the acute exercise bout (P < 0.05) in healthy muscles, but there was no change in diabetic muscles. VEGF-C levels were not changed either in healthy or in diabetic muscle after the exercise training. Neither acute exercise nor exercise training had an effect on the mRNA expression of VEGF-D or VEGFR-3 in healthy or diabetic muscles. Lymphatic vessel density was similar in sedentary and trained mice and was >10-fold smaller than blood capillary density. Diabetes increased the mRNA expression of VEGF-D (P < 0.01). Increased immunohistochemical staining of VEGF-D was found in degenerative muscle fibers in the diabetic mice. In conclusion, the results suggest that acute exercise or exercise training does not significantly affect lymphangiogenesis in skeletal muscle. Diabetes increased the expression of VEGF-D in skeletal muscle, and this increase may be related to muscle fiber damage.  相似文献

Skeletal muscles are diverse in their properties, with specific contractile characteristics being matched to particular functions. In this study, published values of contractile properties for >130 diverse skeletal muscles were analyzed to detect common elements that account for variability in shortening velocity and force production. Body mass was found to be a significant predictor of shortening velocity in terrestrial and flying animals, with smaller animals possessing faster muscles. Although previous studies of terrestrial mammals revealed similar trends, the current study indicates that this pattern is more universal than previously appreciated. In contrast, shortening velocity in muscles used for swimming and nonlocomotory functions is not significantly affected by body size. Although force production is more uniform than shortening velocity, a significant correlation with shortening velocity was detected in muscles used for locomotion, with faster muscles tending to produce more force. Overall, the contractile properties of skeletal muscles are conserved among phylogenic groups, but have been significantly influenced by other factors such as body size and mode of locomotion.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of two extraocular muscles (superior oblique and superior rectus muscles) of the frog were studied and compared with those of a frog's skeletal muscle (iliofibularis muscle) which contains the same types of muscle fibres as the oculorotatory muscles. The extraocular muscles are very fast twitching muscles. They exhibit a smaller contraction time, a smaller half-relaxation time, a higher fusion frequency, and a lower twitch-tetanus ratio than the skeletal muscles. The maximum isometric tetanic tension produced per unit cross-sectional area is lower in the extraocular muscles than in skeletal muscles. However, the extraocular muscles show a higher fatigue resistance than the skeletal muscles. With respect to the dynamic properties there are some differences between the various oculorotatory muscles of the frog. The superior rectus muscle exhibits a faster time-course of the contraction, a higher fusion frequency, and a higher fatigability than the superior oblique muscle. An increase of the extracellular K+-concentration evokes sustained contractures not only in the extraocular muscles but also in the iliofibularis muscle; between these muscles there are no striking differences in the mechanical threshold of the whole muscle preparation. The mechanical threshold depends on the Ca++-concentration of the bathing solution and it is found in a range between 12.5 and 17.5 mM K+ in a normal Ringer solution containing 1.8 mM Ca++. The static-mechanical properties of the extraocular muscles of the frog and the dependence of the active developed tension on the muscle extension are very similar to those which are known to exist in the extraocular muscles of other vertebrates. In tetanic activated frog's oculorotatory muscles a linear relationship exists between length and tension. A variation of the stimulation frequency does not change the slope of this curve but causes parallel shifts of the curve. The peculiar properties of the extraocular muscles of the frog are discussed with respect to the muscle fibre types in these muscles and to the diameter of the muscle fibres.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle changes after endurance training at high altitude.   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The effects of endurance training on the skeletal muscle of rats have been studied at sea level and simulated high altitude (4,000 m). Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups: exercise at sea level, exercise at simulated high altitude, sedentary at sea level, and sedentary at high altitude (n = 8 in each group). Training consisted of swimming for 1 h/day in water at 36 degrees C for 14 wk. Training and exposure to a high-altitude environment produced a decrease in body weight (P less than 0.001). There was a significant linear correlation between muscle mass and body weight in the animals of all groups (r = 0.89, P less than 0.001). High-altitude training enhanced the percentage of type IIa fibers in the extensor digitorum longus muscle (EDL, P less than 0.05) and deep portions of the plantaris muscle (dPLA, P less than 0.01). High-altitude training also increased the percentage of type IIab fibers in fast-twitch muscles. These muscles showed marked metabolic adaptations: training increased the activity levels of enzymes involved in the citric acid cycle (citrate synthase, CS) and the beta-oxidation of fatty acids (3 hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase, HAD). This increase occurred mainly at high altitude (36 and 31% for HAD in EDL and PLA muscles; 24 and 31% for CS in EDL and PLA muscles). Training increased the activity of enzymes involved in glucose phosphorylation (hexokinase). High-altitude training decreased lactate dehydrogenase activity. Endurance training performed at high altitude and sea level increased the isozyme 1-to-total lactate dehydrogenase activity ratio to the same extent.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of dystonia musculorum (dt) mutation, characterized by spinocerebellar fibers degeneration, on cardiac and skeletal muscles: one respiratory (diaphragm, Dia), three masticatory (anterior temporalis, AT; masseter superficialis, MS; and anterior digastric, AD), one hindlimb (soleus, S), tongue (T), and one cardiac (ventricle, V). Body and muscle weight, muscle protein content, and myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms relative expression were then compared in dt mutant mice and in normal mice, according to sex. Male body and muscle weight was always greater than that of females, but there was no specific muscle difference in females. dt mutant mice showed a reduced whole body growth but no specific muscle atrophy, as well as a global decrease in muscle protein content that made muscles more fragile. dt mutation induced a global reduction of muscle protein concentration, whereas a general influence of sex could not be disclosed. Concerning MHC relative composition, all the muscles were fast-twitch: Dia, AT, MS, AD, S, and T expressed predominantly the fast type 2 MHC isoforms, whereas V contained only MHC alpha, also a fast MHC. Female muscles were slower than male muscles, except for S, which was faster. However, classification of muscles in terms of shortening velocity was very different in normal males and females. In other respects, dt mutant muscles were slower and consequently more fatigue resistant than normal, except for S, which became faster and less fatigue resistant. dt mutation exhibits then a specific effect on this continually active postural muscle. In the other muscles, global increased fatigue resistance could constitute an adaptive response to work requirements modifications linked to the muscle damage. It should be noted that a developmental MHC (neonatal) was present in female dt AD. Innervation, which influences muscle structure, is altered in dt mutant and could be another causal factor of the fast-to-slow MHC switches. It appears that dystonin, the dt gene product, is very important in maintaining the structural integrity of both cardiac and skeletal muscle and in its absence, the muscle becomes more fragile and is damaged by modified activity.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle enlargement with weight-lifting exercise by rats   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A rat model of weight lifting that produces skeletal muscle enlargement utilizing regimens of resistance training similar to those employed in human training programs is described. The model consists of electrically stimulating the lower leg muscles to contract against a weighted pulley bar. Animals were subjected to training protocols employing low-frequency repetitions with high training loads within a training session. Initial maximum loads of between 200 and 800 g were progressively increased during the 16 wk of training. Work done at the end of the training period increased to an average value 66% higher than that performed at the start of training. The gastrocnemius wet weight and protein content increased (P less than 0.001) by 18 and 17%, respectively, in the stimulated loaded leg in all but one training protocol, a program in which rats were exercised more frequently. RNA content, but not concentration, was increased in the trained gastrocnemius muscle from each protocol, resulting in muscle enlargement. These data indicate that the basic model presented here provides a suitable vehicle for future studies into the biochemical events that may cause skeletal muscle enlargement during resistance training but, based on limited data, suggests that an increased frequency of training days may hinder muscle enlargement in this model.  相似文献

The lipophilic cationic radiotracer (99m)Tc-sestamibi, known to be concentrated within mitochondria, is widely used for myocardial perfusion and to a lesser extent for muscle metabolism imaging. However, the exact distribution pattern in skeletal muscle has not been yet studied in detail. The present study aims to investigate the (99m)Tc-sestamibi uptake in rat skeletal muscle and myocardium in relation to their metabolic characteristics. (99m)Tc-sestamibi was i.v. administered in twenty adult male Wistar rats and uptake, as percent of injected dose per tissue gram (%ID/g), in the myocardium, soleus, extensor digitorum longus and gastrocnemius muscles was assessed 2 h after the injection. Muscle uptake was also correlated with myocardial uptake, muscle weight and body weight. Skeletal muscle (99m)Tc-sestamibi uptake was a small (9-16 %) fraction of that found in myocardium (1.71+/-0.63 %ID/g). Among the three hindlimb muscles considered, the slow-oxidative soleus muscle showed the highest uptake (0.28+/-0.16 %ID/g). Metabolically diverse parts of the gastrocnemius muscle showed different uptake. Skeletal muscle uptake was positively correlated with myocardial uptake and both were negatively correlated with tissue and body weight. Skeletal muscle and myocardium (99m)Tc-sestamibi uptake is related to their metabolic profile. Myocardium, with an exceptional rich mitochondrial concentration, shows much higher (99m)Tc-sestamibi uptake compared to skeletal muscles. Among muscles, uptake is dependent on their mitochondrial content. Evidence of matching exists between myocardial and muscle uptake, and both are size-dependent.  相似文献

A new method was developed to determine myoglobin (Mb) contents in as least as 5 mg of murine skeletal muscles. The method was a modification of Reynafarje's spectroscopic technique and was based on the Soret absorptions at 416 and 422 nm of the muscle extract. Mb contents in the skeletal and cardiac muscles increased with age and were widely different from muscle to muscle. The contents in most of the 13 muscles examined at the 30th week of age were less than 1.5 mg/g wet muscle, but the cardiac, soleus and gracilis muscles showed exceptionally high values of 2.2-6.0 mg/g. The relative content of one muscle to the other was the same independent of differences in age, strain and sex. There was a positive correlation between the muscle Mb contents and citrate synthase activity (r = 0.930). Young male mice (5 wk-old) were endurance-trained by a gradual load-increment program on treadmill for 10 weeks (5 days/week), but the training had no effects on the Mb contents. No substantial alteration of the contents was also observed in the limbs immobilized by plaster-fixation for 4 weeks.  相似文献

Dietary protein intake is important for skeletal muscle protein synthesis. In this study, we investigated the differential effect of protein sources on hypertrophy of plantaris muscle induced by surgical ablation of gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. Six-week old mice were fed diets containing caseinate, whey, or soy as protein sources for 2 weeks. Plantaris muscle hypertrophy was induced by a unilateral ablation of synergistic muscles after a week. Food intake of soy protein-fed mice was higher than that of caseinate and whey-fed mice, resulting in higher body and fat weights. Plantaris muscle weight in sham-operated mice was not different across the groups. Overload-operated plantaris muscle weight and increased ratio of overloaded muscle to sham-operated muscle weights were higher in caseinate-fed mice than in whey- and soy protein-fed mice, suggesting caseinate as a promising protein source for muscle hypertrophy.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of combined metformin treatment and exercise training on body composition, on insulin concentration following glucose loading, on insulin-stimulated glucose transport in skeletal muscle, and on muscle glycogen content. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated for 35 days with or without metformin (320 mg/kg/day) and/or treadmill exercise training (20 min at 20 m/min, 5 days/wk). Because metformin reduces food intake, pair-fed controls were included. Metformin, training, and pair-feeding all decreased food intake, body weight, and insulin concentration following glucose loading. Metformin and training reduced intra-abdominal fat, but pair feeding did not. In isolated strips derived from soleus, epitrochlearis and extensor carpi ulnaris muscles, metformin increased insulin-stimulated transport of [3H]-2-deoxyglucose by 90%, 89% and 125%, respectively (P < 0.02) and training increased [3H]-2-deoxyglucose transport in the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle only (66%, P < 0.05). Pair-feeding did not alter [3H]-2-deoxyglucose transport. Training increased gastrocnemius muscle glycogen by 100% (P < 0.001). Metformin and pair-feeding did not alter muscle glycogen. We conclude that metformin reverses the maturation-induced impairment of insulin responsiveness in Sprague-Dawley rats by increasing insulin-stimulated glucose transport in skeletal muscle and that this effect is not secondary to reduced food intake. We also conclude that metformin and exercise training may increase insulin sensitivity by different mechanisms, with training causing increased glucose transport only in some muscles and also causing increased muscle glycogen storage.  相似文献

Endotoxin administration is frequently used as a model of systemic inflammatory response which is considered the important pathogenetic factor in muscle wasting development in severe illness, such as sepsis, cancer, injury, AIDS and others. The main purpose of this study was determining the effect of various doses of endotoxin on protein and amino acid metabolism in two types of rat skeletal muscle. Sepsis was induced by intraperitoneal administration of endotoxin in a dose of 1, 3 and 5 mg/kg body weight (bw); control animals received a corresponding volume of the saline solution. After 24 h, extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus (SOL) muscles were isolated and used for determination of total and myofibrillar proteolysis, protein synthesis, activity of cathepsins B and L, chymotrypsin-like activity of proteasome and amino acid release. The endotoxemia induced the body weight loss, the rise of total cholesterol and triglyceride plasma concentration and the protein catabolic state in skeletal muscle, which was caused by a higher increase in protein breakdown (due to activation of the proteasome system) than protein synthesis. The more significant effect of endotoxin was seen in EDL than SOL. The dose of 5 mg of endotoxin/kg bw induced the most significant changes in parameters of the protein and amino acid metabolism measured and could be therefore considered appropriate for studies of protein catabolism in young rat skeletal muscle at 24 h after endotoxin treatment.  相似文献

During development, skeletal muscles are established in a highly organized manner, which persists throughout life. Molecular and genetic experiments over the last decades have identified many developmental control genes critical for skeletal muscle formation. Developmental studies have shown that skeletal muscles of the body, limb and head have distinct embryonic and cellular origin, and the genetic regulation at work in these domains and during adult myogenesis are starting to be identified. In this review we will summarize the current knowledge on the regulatory circuits that lead to the establishment of skeletal muscle in these different anatomical regions.  相似文献

In order to use Ntau-methylhistidine (3-methylhistidine) excretion in the urine as a measure of muscle protein breakdown, it is necessary to demonstrate that other tissues are not important sources of this protein constituent. Accordingly, the concentration of Ntau-methylhistidine in blood serum and in the mixed proteins of heart, brain, lung, kidney, diaphragm, spleen, testis, stomach, liver and hind leg skeletal muscle was measured in male rats of approx. 400 g body weight. The free Ntau-methylhistidine concentration of rat serum was less than 2 nmol per ml. In contrast, measurable amounts of Ntau-methylhistidine were found in the mixed proteins of all tissues and organs examined. The highest concentration was found in skeletal muscle (658 nmol/g tissue). Assuming muscle mass to be 45% of body weight, it has been estimated that the muscle contains more than ten times the total amount of this amino acid present in all of the other organs analyzed, which together account for about 20% of total body weight. These findings indicate that skeletal muscle is likely to be the major source of urinary Ntau-methylhistidine and the latter is, in consequence, a reflection of myofibrillar protein breakdown in skeletal muscle.  相似文献

How mechanochemical signals induced by the amount of weight borne by the skeletal musculature are translated into modifications to muscle sarcomeres is poorly understood. Our laboratory recently demonstrated that, in response to experimentally induced increases in the weight load borne by a rat, alternative splicing of the fast skeletal muscle troponin T (Tnnt3) pre-mRNA in gastrocnemius was adjusted in a correlated fashion with the amount of added weight. (Schilder RJ, Kimball SR, Marden JH, Jefferson LS. J Exp Biol 214: 1523-1532, 2011). Thus muscle load is perceived quantitatively by the body, and mechanisms that sense it appear to control processes that generate muscle sarcomere composition plasticity, such as alternative pre-mRNA splicing. Here we demonstrate how mechanical stretch (see earlier comment) of C2C12 muscle cells in culture results in changes to Tnnt3 pre-mRNA alternative splicing that are qualitatively similar to those observed in response to added weight in rats. Moreover, inhibition of Akt signaling, but not that of ERK1/2, prevents the stretch-induced effect on Tnnt3 pre-mRNA alternative splicing. These findings suggest that effects of muscle load on Tnnt3 pre-mRNA alternative splicing are controlled by a cell-autonomous mechanism, rather than systemically. They also indicate that, in addition to its regulatory role in protein synthesis and muscle mass plasticity, Akt signaling may regulate muscle sarcomere composition by modulating alternative splicing events in response to load. Manipulation of Tnnt3 pre-mRNA alternative splicing by mechanical stretch of cells in culture provides a model to investigate the biology of weight sensing by skeletal muscles and facilitates identification of mechanisms through which skeletal muscles match their performance and experienced load.  相似文献

To understand the long-term metabolic and functional consequences of increased GLUT4 content, intracellular substrate utilization was investigated in isolated muscles of transgenic mice overexpressing GLUT4 selectively in fast-twitch skeletal muscles. Rates of glycolysis, glycogen synthesis, glucose oxidation, and free fatty acid (FFA) oxidation as well as glycogen content were assessed in isolated EDL (fast-twitch) and soleus (slow-twitch) muscles from female and male MLC-GLUT4 transgenic and control mice. In male MLC-GLUT4 EDL, increased glucose influx predominantly led to increased glycolysis. In contrast, in female MLC-GLUT4 EDL increased glycogen synthesis was observed. In both sexes, GLUT4 overexpression resulted in decreased exogenous FFA oxidation rates. The decreased rate of FFA oxidation in male MLC-GLUT4 EDL was associated with increased lipid content in liver, but not in muscle or at the whole body level. To determine how changes in substrate metabolism and insulin action may influence energy balance in an environment that encouraged physical activity, we measured voluntary training activity, body weight, and food consumption of MLC-GLUT4 and control mice in cages equipped with training wheels. We observed a small decrease in body weight of MLC-GLUT4 mice that was paradoxically accompanied by a 45% increase in food consumption. The results were explained by a marked fourfold increase in voluntary wheel exercise. The changes in substrate metabolism and physical activity in MLC-GLUT4 mice were not associated with dramatic changes in skeletal muscle morphology. Collectively, results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of altering muscle substrate utilization by overexpression of GLUT4. The results also suggest that as a potential treatment for type II diabetes mellitus, increased skeletal muscle GLUT4 expression may provide benefits in addition to improvement of insulin action.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether long-term, heavy resistance training would cause adaptations in rat skeletal muscle structure and function. Ten male Wistar rats (3 weeks old) were trained to climb a 40-cm vertical ladder (4 days/week) while carrying progressively heavier loads secured to their tails. After 26 weeks of training the rats were capable of lifting up to 800 g or 140% of their individual body mass for four sets of 12–15 repetitions per session. No difference in body mass was observed between the trained rats and age-matched sedentary control rats. Absolute and relative heart mass were greater in trained rats than control rats. When expressed relative to body mass, the mass of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles was greater in trained rats than control rats. No difference in absolute muscle mass or maximum force-producing capacity was evident in either the EDL or soleus muscles after training, although both muscles exhibited an increased resistance to fatigue. Individual fibre hypertrophy was evident in all four skeletal muscles investigated, i.e. EDL, soleus, plantaris and rectus femoris muscles of trained rats, but muscle fibre type proportions within each of the muscles tested remained unchanged. Despite an increased ability of the rats to lift progressively heavier loads, this heavy resistance training model did not induce gross muscle hypertrophy nor did it increase the force-producing capacity of the EDL or soleus muscles.
