To establish a dominance order, social animals often rely on indicators of fighting to avoid costly aggressive encounters. In some species, individuals use colour patterns to signal their social status. Recent studies claimed that facial markings in the eusocial paper wasp Polistes dominulus are status badges that allow co-foundresses to form a linear hierarchy based on individual quality. Here, we evaluated facial patterns in natural populations of P. dominulus, in its native range, to observe whether the marks reflect overall wasp quality in different contexts. We used the same measures of clypeus patterns used by earlier studies, but did not find that they functioned as status badges. Our analyses showed no evidence that visual markers are related to: (i) size, (ii) probability of surviving winter, (iii) social rank in spring associations, or (iv) health status (assessed by the presence of strepsipteran endoparasites). Size, however, is important. Larger wasps are more likely to survive the winter and to acquire the dominant position in spring associations. Larvae infected with endoparasites become smaller adult wasps. These findings suggest that body size is a reliable quality indicator on which wasps build their social networks, and that clypeus patterning is not involved.  相似文献

Aggressive competition is an important aspect of social interactions, but conflict can be costly. Some animals are thought to minimize the costs of conflict by using conventional signals of agonistic ability (i.e. badges of status) to assess rivals. Although putative badges have been found in a range of taxa, little research has tested whether individuals use badges to assess potential rivals before they engage in aggressive contests. Here, choice trials were used to test how the variable black facial patterns in Polistes dominulus wasps are used during rival assessment. Focal wasps were given access to two patches of food, each guarded by a wasp whose facial pattern had been experimentally altered. Wasps chose food patches based on the facial pattern of the guard, preferring to challenge guards with facial patterns indicating a low level of quality, while avoiding guards with facial patterns indicating a high level of quality. Therefore, status badges play an important role during rival assessment; paper wasps use facial patterns alone to quickly assess the agonistic abilities of strangers.  相似文献

Some animals minimize the high costs of aggressive conflict by using conventional signals of agonistic ability to assess rivals prior to interacting. Conventional signals are more controversial than other signals of agonistic ability because they lack an inherent physical or physiological link with their bearer’s agonistic ability. Here, we test whether the variable brown facial stripes in Polistes exclamans paper wasps function as a conventional signal. Polistes exclamans were given the option of challenging or avoiding a rival with an experimentally altered facial pattern. Our results show that rival assessment is based on the facial patterns of rivals, as well as an individual’s own size, facial patterns, and nesting strategy. Individuals with larger body size and larger brown facial stripes were more likely to challenge rivals than individuals with smaller body size and smaller brown facial stripes. In addition, large individuals were more likely to challenge rivals with large brown facial stripes than small individuals, while an individual’s own body size did not influence whether or not they challenged rivals with small brown stripes. Individuals who previously nested in multiple queen groups approached rivals more rapidly than individuals who previously nested alone, suggesting that social experience also plays a role in rival assessment. Finally, rivals with small facial stripes were challenged more rapidly than those with large facial stripes. These results demonstrate that P. exclamans facial patterns function as a signal used to minimize the cost of conflict. However, individuals do not make simple decisions based on their rival’s signal alone, as an individual’s own social experience and agonistic abilities also influence rival assessment decisions.  相似文献

Methods for estimating 'typical' asymptotic- body size in populations of the North African agamid Agma impalearis using individuals of undetermined age were investigated, and the pattern of geographic variation in this characteristic described and tested against simple models based on putative causes. Resampling of a large single-site data set indicated that use of the sample mean led to substantial underestimation of asymptotic size while use of the largest animal per sample led to overestimation, on average. The 80th percentile provided the most accurate estimate of asymptotic size and, compared with the largest individual per sample, had low variance, showed low dependence on sample size and was amenable to bootstrap estimation of confidence intervals. A clear pattern of geographic variation in asymptotic size was evident across Morocco: animals were smallest in the north and east and largest in the southwest. This pattern was discordant with previously-described patterns of variation in scalation and size-free body dimensions and, unlike these characteristics, could not be explained by a model based on secondary contact of previously vicariant populations. Among-site differentiation was strongly associated with a model based on a proxy of current potential gene flow between sites, supporting an alternative in situ differentiation hypothesis based on the combined effects of isolation-by-distance and the dispersal barrier provided by the higher parts of the Atlas mountain range. Previous studies have shown that ecological factors had a significant role in shaping the patterns of craniofacial variation among South American populations. Here, we evaluate whether temperature and diet contributed to facial diversification in small geographic areas. Facial size and shape of 9 osteological samples from central Patagonia (Argentina) were described using 2D landmarks and semilandmarks. Data on mean annual temperature, diet composition (δ13C and δ15N values) and femoral head maximum breadth, used as a proxy of body mass, were obtained for each sample. We then tested the association of body mass and the ecological variables with facial morphology using spatial regression techniques and a model selection approach. Akaike Information Criterion produced disparate results for both components of facial morphology. The best model for facial size included temperature and body mass proxy, and accounted for more than 80% of variation in size. Lower temperatures were related to larger facial sizes. Body mass was negatively associated with facial size and showed no relationship with the temperature. This suggests a relatively independent variation of cranial traits and body mass at the spatial scale studied here. Facial shape was not associated with the temperature or diet composition, contrasting with the patterns observed at larger spatial scales. Our results point out that the effect of climatic variables on cranial traits might be a source of morphological differentiation not only at large scales but also in small geographic areas, and that size and shape display a differential preservation of environmental signals.  相似文献

Stress resistance traits in Drosophila often show clinal variation. Although these patterns suggest selection, there is generally no attempt to test how large differences at the geographical level are relative to levels of variation within and between local populations. Here we compare these levels in D. melanogaster from temperate Tasmania versus tropical northern Queensland by focusing on adult resistance to desiccation, cold and starvation stress, as well as associated traits (size, lipid content). For starvation and desiccation resistance, levels of variation were highest among strains from the same population. whereas there was little differentiation among local populations and a low level of differentiation at the geographic level. For adult cold resistance, there was local differentiation and strain variation but no geographic variation. For size (thorax length), geographic differentiation was higher despite some overlap among strains from the tropical and temperate locations. Finally, for lipid levels there was only evidence for variation among strains. The low level of differentiation among geographic locations for stress resistance was further verified with the characterization of isofemale strains from 18 locations along a coastal transect extending from Tasmania to northern Queensland. Crosses among some of the isofemale strains showed that results were not confounded by inbreeding effects. Strains derived from a cross between a tropical and temperate strain differed for all traits, and variation among strains for body size was higher than strain variation within the geographic regions. Unlike in previous studies, lipid content and starvation resistance were not correlated in any set of strains, but there was a correlation between cold resistance and lipid content. There was also a correlation between desiccation resistance and size but only in the geographic cross strains. These findings suggest a large amount of variation in stress resistance at the population level and inconsistent correlation patterns across experimental approaches.  相似文献

Timing of diapause termination has an important influence on individual reproductive success, but relatively little research has explored how individuals differ in their response to diapause termination cues. We tested individual variation in the timing of post-diapause activity in Polistes dominulus paper wasps. Wasps were overwintered in a temperature-controlled chamber. In the spring, ambient temperature was gradually increased and the time each foundress became active was recorded. Timing of post-diapause activity was most strongly associated with the facial patterns that function as a conventional signal of quality. Foundresses with facial patterns indicating high quality became active at lower temperatures than individuals with facial patterns indicating low quality. Early diapause termination is associated with dominance, so the relationship between diapause termination and facial patterns provides a mechanism linking facial patterns with dominance. Body weight and mating status did not influence timing of post-diapause activity. Juvenile hormone (JH) titer at the time of diapause termination was also measured in a subset of foundresses. There was no JH titer threshold for diapause termination. Instead, our results suggest that individuals may have different threshold responses to JH, as individuals that became active at a lower temperature had lower JH titers than individuals that became active at a higher temperature. Overall, there is substantial individual variation in response to diapause termination cues and the variation is likely to have important impacts on the fitness of nest-founding females.  相似文献

Many animals have ornaments that mediate choice and competition in social and sexual contexts. Individuals with elaborate sexual ornaments typically have higher fitness than those with less elaborate ornaments, but less is known about whether socially selected ornaments are associated with fitness. Here, we test the relationship between fitness and facial patterns that are a socially selected signal of fighting ability in Polistes dominula wasps. We found wasps that signal higher fighting ability have larger nests, are more likely to survive harsh winters, and obtain higher dominance rank than wasps that signal lower fighting ability. In comparison, body weight was not associated with fitness. Larger wasps were dominant over smaller wasps, but showed no difference in nest size or survival. Overall, the positive relationship between wasp facial patterns and fitness indicates that receivers can obtain diverse information about a signaler's phenotypic quality by paying attention to socially selected ornaments. Therefore, there are surprisingly strong parallels between the information conveyed by socially and sexually selected signals. Similar fitness relationships in social and sexually selected signals may be one reason it can be difficult to distinguish the role of social versus sexual selection in ornament evolution.  相似文献

Capsule: Components of Daurian Redstart Phoenicurus auroreus song have evolved along independent trajectories and show a mix of clinal and dialect patterns of geographic variation.

Aims: To investigate multiple structural components of song in Daurian Redstarts Phoenicurus auroreus as they varied among five locations across South Korea. To test whether different components of the same signal can evolve along independent trajectories, or else are constrained to evolve in correlated fashion.

Methods: Two distinct song components were investigated: the introductory whistle and the complex syllable. For both segments, we made both qualitative and quantitative comparisons of similarity among individuals both within and among populations.

Results: Patterns of geographic variation differed substantially between the two song segment types. Introductory whistles varied widely both within and among individuals, and were distributed across space in a mosaic pattern. Complex syllable parts showed high within-individual similarity and a distinctly clinal pattern of geographic variation, with the exception of a distinct dialect in one population isolated by a high-elevation mountain range.

Conclusions: The results suggest that different components of Daurian Redstart songs have evolved along independent trajectories; that specific song components may show a mix of clinal and dialect patterns of geographic variation; and that different song components might simultaneously transmit distinct patterns of information about individual, dialect or species identity.  相似文献

Low dispersal marine intertidal species facing strong divergent selective pressures associated with steep environmental gradients have a great potential to inform us about local adaptation and reproductive isolation. Among these, gastropods of the genus Littorina offer a unique system to study parallel phenotypic divergence resulting from adaptation to different habitats related with wave exposure. In this study, we focused on two Littorina fabalis ecotypes from Northern European shores and compared patterns of habitat‐related phenotypic and genetic divergence across three different geographic levels (local, regional and global). Geometric morphometric analyses revealed that individuals from habitats moderately exposed to waves usually present a larger shell size with a wider aperture than those from sheltered habitats. The phenotypic clustering of L. fabalis by habitat across most locations (mainly in terms of shell size) support an important role of ecology in morphological divergence. A genome scan based on amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) revealed a heterogeneous pattern of differentiation across the genome between populations from the two different habitats, suggesting ecotype divergence in the presence of gene flow. The contrasting patterns of genetic structure between nonoutlier and outlier loci, and the decreased sharing of outlier loci with geographic distance among locations are compatible with parallel evolution of phenotypic divergence, with an important contribution of gene flow and/or ancestral variation. In the future, model‐based inference studies based on sequence data across the entire genome will help unravelling these evolutionary hypotheses, improving our knowledge about adaptation and its influence on diversification within the marine realm.  相似文献

Given the diversity of animal signals, there has been recentinterest in categorizing signals into probable functions accordingto their properties. For example, models predict that signalsof quality should be costly and condition dependent, whereassignals of individual identity should be cheap and expressedindependently of condition. Here, we test these predictionsby comparing the condition dependence of signals of individualidentity and quality in Polistes wasps. Polistes fuscatus waspshave black and yellow patterns on the face and abdomen thatsignal individual identity, whereas Polistes dominulus waspshave black and yellow facial patterns that signal aspects ofquality related to dominance. We reared both species with andwithout supplemental food and examined the facial patterns ofthe resulting offspring. As predicted, food availability didnot influence the development of identity signals in P. fuscatus.In strong contrast, P. dominulus wasps reared with supplementalfood had facial patterns that signaled higher levels of qualitythan P. dominulus reared without supplemental food. Interestingly,the identity and quality signals have different condition dependence,despite being composed of similar pigments, suggesting thatsignal function has a stronger influence on signal propertiesthan pigmentation. Because body size is often correlated withquality signal elaboration, we also tested how food supplementationinfluenced offspring size. In both species, supplemented coloniesproduced smaller offspring than nonsupplemented colonies, suggestingthat queens may invest in producing fewer, larger offspringin stressful environments.  相似文献

Unlike populations of many terrestrial species, marine populations often are not separated by obvious, permanent barriers to gene flow. When species have high dispersal potential and few barriers to gene flow, allopatric divergence is slow. Nevertheless, many marine species are of recent origin, even in taxa with high dispersal potential. To understand the relationship between genetic structure and recent species formation in high dispersal taxa, we examined population genetic structure among four species of sea urchins in the tropical Indo-West Pacific that have speciated within the past one to three million years. Despite high potential for gene flow, mtDNA sequence variation among 200 individuals of four species in the urchin genus Echinometra shows a signal of strong geographic effects. These effects include (1) substantial population heterogeneity; (2) lower genetic variation in peripheral populations; and (3) isolation by distance. These geographic patterns are especially strong across scales of 5000-10,000 km, and are weaker over scales of 2500-5000 km. As a result, strong geographic patterns would not have been readily visible except over the wide expanse of the tropical Pacific. Surface currents in the Pacific do not explain patterns of gene flow any better than do patterns of simple spatial proximity. Finally, populations of each species tend to group into large mtDNA regions with similar mtDNA haplotypes, but these regional boundaries are not concordant in different species. These results show that all four species have accumulated mtDNA differences over similar spatial and temporal scales but that the precise geographic pattern of genetic differentiation varies for each species. These geographic patterns appear much less deterministic than in other well-known coastal marine systems and may be driven by chance and historical accident.  相似文献

The relationship between environmental gradients and patterns of geographic variation in body size has been a controversial topic for ectothermic organisms globally. To examine whether the patterns that generally hold in more temperate species also hold for tropical ones, we examined the intraspecific body size variation in three species of Neotropical frogs, Dendropsophus minutus, Hypsiboas faber and Physalaemus cuvieri, along different environmental gradients (e.g. temperature, precipitation and topography). We analysed four competing hypotheses: (i) the water availability hypothesis that predicts a negative relationship between body size and precipitation; (ii) the heat balance hypothesis that predicts a negative relationship between body size and temperature; (iii) the topography hypothesis that predicts a negative relationship between body size and altitude; and (iv) the mixed‐effect hypothesis that predicts that individuals occurring in wet and cold sites would be larger than individuals occurring in dry and warm sites. The spatial pattern of geographic variation in body size among populations of H. faber was associated with the mixed‐effect hypothesis. In localities with low precipitation seasonality and cold conditions, H. faber individuals were larger than in localities with high precipitation seasonality and warm conditions. Variation in the body size of D. minutus was the opposite of that predicted by the heat balance hypothesis. Individuals in localities with high temperatures were larger than in localities with low temperatures. On the other hand, variation in the body size of P. cuvieri was not associated with the variables used in this study. Our results suggest that intraspecific variation in anuran body size is more dependent on species‐specific response than on the region (i.e. temperate or tropical) where they occur.  相似文献

 Field phenologies of high- (ca. 1500 m) and low- (ca. 500 m) altitude populations of the two most common European species of dung flies, Scathophaga stercoraria and Sepsis cynipsea, differ quite markedly due to differences in climate. To differentiate genetic adaptation due to natural selection and phenotypic plasticity, I compared standard life history characters of pairs of high- and low-altitude populations from three disjunctive sites in Switzerland in a laboratory experiment. The F1 rearing environment did not affect any of the variables of the F2 generation with which all experiments were conducted; hence, there were no carry-over or maternal effects. In Sc. stercoraria, high-altitude individuals were smaller but laid larger eggs; the latter may be advantageous in the more extreme (i.e. more variable and less predictable) high-altitude climate. Higher rearing temperature strongly decreased development time, body size and the size difference between males and females (males are larger), produced female-biased sex ratios and led to suboptimal adult emergence rates. Several of these variables also varied among the three sites, producing some interactions complicating the patterns. In Se. cynipsea, high-altitude females were marginally smaller, less long-lived and laid fewer clutches. Higher rearing temperature strongly decreased development time and body size but tended to increase the size difference between males and females (males are smaller); it also increased clutch size but decreased physiological longevity. Again, interpretation is complicated by variation across sites and some significant interactions. Overall, genetic adaptation to high-altitude conditions appears weak, probably prevented by substantial gene flow, and may be swamped by the effects of other geographic variables among populations. In contrast, phenotypic plasticity is extensive. This may be due to selection of flexible, multi-purpose genotypes. The results suggest that differences in season length between high- and low-altitude locations alone do not explain well the patterns of variation in phenology and body size. Song Sparrow ( Melospiza melodia ) populations found along the Pacific Coast of North America, from Baja California to the islands off the coast of Alaska, exhibit extensive morphological variation. With a multivariate analysis of size and shape, I describe a portion of this pattern and examine how it could be maintained despite gene flow among the populations. Because shape differences fall along geographic barriers, I suggest that similarities among Song Sparrow populations in multivariate shape reflect their pattern of genetic relatedness. A general pattern of Song Sparrow post-nestling growth allometry has been discovered: bill characteristics are positively allometric and all other characteristics are negatively allometric. In contrast to shape, multivariate patterns of body size variation do not correspond to geographic relationships. In combination with evidence of Song Sparrow phenotypic plasticity, it is proposed that multivariate body size is an environmentally plastic trait and that specific traits exhibit levels of phenotypic plasticity in proportion to their rate of growth with respect to body size. In this way local environmental factors which alter body size may change an entire suite of allometrically related traits and thus create striking patterns of morphological variation.  相似文献

Variation in body size, growth and life history traits of ectotherms along latitudinal and altitudinal clines is generally assumed to represent adaptation to local environmental conditions, especially adaptation to temperature. However, the degree to which variation along these clines is due to adaptation vs plasticity remains poorly understood. In addition, geographic patterns often differ between females and males – e.g. sexual dimorphism varies along latitudinal clines, but the extent to which these sex differences are due to genetic differences between sexes vs sex differences in plasticity is poorly understood. We use common garden experiments (beetles reared at 24, 30 and 36°C) to quantify the relative contribution of genetically‐based differentiation among populations vs phenotypic plasticity to variation in body size and other traits among six populations of the seed‐feeding beetle Stator limbatus collected from various altitudes in Arizona, USA. We found that temperature induces substantial plasticity in survivorship, body size and female lifetime fecundity, indicating that developmental temperature significantly affects growth and life history traits of S. limbatus. We also detected genetic differences among populations for body size and fecundity, and genetic differences among populations in thermal reaction norms, but the altitude of origin (and hence mean temperature) does not appear to explain these genetic differences. This and other recent studies suggest that temperature is not the major environmental factor that generates geographic variation in traits of this species. In addition, though there was no overall difference in plasticity of body size between males and females (when averaged across populations), we did find that the degree to which dimorphism changed with temperature varied among populations. Consequently, future studies should be extremely cautious when using only a few study populations to examine environmental effects on sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

Contemporary genetic variation among Latin Americans human groups reflects population migrations shaped by complex historical, social and economic factors. Consequently, admixture patterns may vary by geographic regions ranging from countries to neighborhoods. We examined the geographic variation of admixture across the island of Puerto Rico and the degree to which it could be explained by historic and social events. We analyzed a census-based sample of 642 Puerto Rican individuals that were genotyped for 93 ancestry informative markers (AIMs) to estimate African, European and Native American ancestry. Socioeconomic status (SES) data and geographic location were obtained for each individual. There was significant geographic variation of ancestry across the island. In particular, African ancestry demonstrated a decreasing East to West gradient that was partially explained by historical factors linked to the colonial sugar plantation system. SES also demonstrated a parallel decreasing cline from East to West. However, at a local level, SES and African ancestry were negatively correlated. European ancestry was strongly negatively correlated with African ancestry and therefore showed patterns complementary to African ancestry. By contrast, Native American ancestry showed little variation across the island and across individuals and appears to have played little social role historically. The observed geographic distributions of SES and genetic variation relate to historical social events and mating patterns, and have substantial implications for the design of studies in the recently admixed Puerto Rican population. More generally, our results demonstrate the importance of incorporating social and geographic data with genetics when studying contemporary admixed populations.  相似文献

We describe the spatial pattern of variation in body size, body shape, and adult population age structure of the Italian treefrog (Hyla intermedia). By means of a non-parametric test of matrix association (the Partial Mantel Test), we investigate the role of climate and geography in explaining the patterns of phenotypic variation. Body size is the most important source of morphometric variation, both at intra- and inter-populational levels. Body shape, despite its secondary role in explaining variation, still maintains high discriminative power among populations. Age structure differs significantly among populations, since body size correlates positively to age, these differences partly explain geographic variation of body size. The patterns of variation in both age and body size are congruent with climate variation, suggesting causal relationship. However, we find no evidence for adaptive explanations and suggest that climate-induced demographically differential survivorship might be the proximate cause responsible for the associations observed. Unlike body size, body shape varies congruently with the pattern of between-population geographic distances, which we show to be highly correlated with their genetic distances, thus suggesting isolation by distance as the proximate cause of the association.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that drive geographic variation in life history is an important challenge in evolutionary ecology. Here, we analyze what predicts geographic variation in life‐history traits of the common lizard, Zootoca vivipara, which has the globally largest distribution range of all terrestrial reptile species. Variation in body size was predicted by differences in the length of activity season, while we found no effects of environmental temperature per se. Females experiencing relatively short activity season mature at a larger size and remain larger on average than females in populations with relatively long activity seasons. Interpopulation variation in fecundity was largely explained by mean body size of females and reproductive mode, with viviparous populations having larger clutch size than oviparous populations. Finally, body size‐fecundity relationship differs between viviparous and oviparous populations, with relatively lower reproductive investment for a given body size in oviparous populations. While the phylogenetic signal was weak overall, the patterns of variation showed spatial effects, perhaps reflecting genetic divergence or geographic variation in additional biotic and abiotic factors. Our findings emphasize that time constraints imposed by the environment rather than ambient temperature play a major role in shaping life histories in the common lizard. This might be attributed to the fact that lizards can attain their preferred body temperature via behavioral thermoregulation across different thermal environments. Length of activity season, defining the maximum time available for lizards to maintain optimal performance, is thus the main environmental factor constraining growth rate and annual rates of mortality. Our results suggest that this factor may partly explain variation in the extent to which different taxa follow ecogeographic rules.  相似文献

We describe the spatial pattern of variation of morphometric characters and call acoustic properties of tetraploid green toads [Bufo viridis complex) from eight populations in Central Asia, and we analyse the causal agents responsible for the patterns observed, by means of partial Mantel tests. Populations significantly differ with respect to both body size and body shape. Since animals inhabiting the driest regions are smaller, but not younger, man animals from less dry areas, we suggest that their small body size is due to the limiting effect of arid climate on growth rate. Differences in body shape are positively associated only with geographic distances, and we suggest that isolation by distance might have played an important role in determining the pattern of variation. Populations significantly differ also with respect to the acoustic properties of the call, in particular, with respect to temperature-adjusted pulse rate and body size-adjusted fundamental frequency; that is, with respect to those properties which are under the strongest morphological or physiological constraints, and that show the lowest variability within individuals (static properties). The pattern of variation of calls shows positive association with geographic distances, but not with climatic distances. Calls do vary, and in this region the main causal agent responsible for call variation might have been the isolation by distance. The evolutionary implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献
