Leaf and tiller development in vegetative plants of S.37 cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), S.215 meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) and S.24 perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne L.) were measured in photoperiods varied by extending a basic period of natural light with low-intensity artificial illumination so that all plants received approximately the same amount of light each day. Increasing the photoperiod usually increased leaf length and sometimes leaf width, but decreased rate of production of leaves. However, the rate of production of new leaf surface increased with photoperiod. Increasing the photoperiod generally decreased the rate of tillering; thus, plants grown in long days had few tillers with large leaves and sheaths, in short days, plants developed more but smaller tillers.  相似文献

Summary When radioactive gibberellin A5 (3H-GA5) was applied to the apices and surrounding young leaves of the long-day plant Silene armeria, it was partially converted to at least two other acidic substances. One of them was similar to GA3 in chromatographic, but not in biological properties. The other metabolite was more polar than GA3 and inactive in the dwarf d-5 corn assay. The rate of 3H-GA5 conversion was influenced by the photoperiod under which Silene plants were grown. Exposure to 2 long days significantly increased 3H-GA5 metabolism over that in control plants kept under short days. The increased conversion of 3H-GA5 persisted for at least a few days after transferring Silene plants back from long to short days. Likewise, stem growth induced by long photoperiods continued for a considerable period of time under subsequent short days.Application of the growth retardant AMO-1618 to Silene reduced the levels of two endogenous GA-like substances, one of them with GA5-like properties, more under long than under short days. These results indicate that long photoperiods, which induce flower formation and stem elongation in Silene, increase the turnover of endogenous gibberellins.  相似文献

The possibility that Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is subject to long day photoperiodic control in Portulacaria afra (L.) Jacq., a facultative CAM plant, was studied. Periodic measurements of 14CO2 uptake, stomatal resistance, and titratable acidity were made on plants exposed to long and short day photoperiods. Results indicates that waterstressed P. afra had primarily nocturnal CO2 uptake, daytime stomatal closure, and a large diurnal acid fluctuation in either photoperiod. Mature leaf tissue from nonstressed plants under long days exhibited a moderate diurnal acid fluctuation and midday stomatal closure. Under short days, there was a reduced diurnal acid fluctuation in mature leaf tissue. Young leaf tissue taken from nonstressed plants did not utilize the CAM pathway under either photoperiod as indicated by daytime CO2 uptake, lack of diurnal acid fluctuation, and incomplete daytime stomatal closure.

The induction of CAM in P. afra appears to be related to the water status of the plant and the age of the leaf tissue. The photosynthetic metabolism of mature leaves may be partly under the control of water stress and of photoperiod, where CAM is favored under long days.

Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) are highly productive in mid- to high-latitude areas where photoperiods change significantly throughout the growing season. To study the effects of changes in photoperiod on growth and tuber development of potato cv. Denali, plants were grown for 112 d with 400 micromol m-2 s-1 photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) under a 12-h photoperiod (short days, SD), a 24-h photoperiod (long days, LD), and combinations where plants were moved between the two photoperiods 28, 56, or 84 d after planting. Plants given LD throughout growth received the greatest total daily PPF and produced the greatest tuber yields. At similar levels of total PPF, plants given SD followed by LD yielded greater tuber dry mass (DM) than plants given LD followed by SD. Stem DM per plant, leaf DM, and total plant DM all increased with an increasing proportion of LD and increasing daily PPF, regardless of the daylength sequence. When studies were repeated, but at an enriched (1000 micromol mol-1) CO2 concentration, overall growth trends were similar, with high CO2 resulting in greater stem length, stem DM, leaf DM, and total plant DM; but high CO2 did not increase tuber DM.  相似文献

Under severe water stress, leaf wilting is quite general in higher plants. This passive movement can reduce the energy load on a leaf. This paper reports an experimental test of the hypothesis that leaf wilting movement has a protective function that mitigates against photoinhibition of photosynthesis in the field. The experiments exposed cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to two water regimes: water-stressed and well-watered. Leaf wilting movement occurred in water-stressed plants as the water potential decreased to −4.1 MPa, reducing light interception but maintaining comparable quantum yields of photosystem II (PS II; Yield for short) and the proportion of total PS II centers that were open (qP). Predrawn F v/F m (potential quantum yield of PS II) as an indicator of overnight recovery of PS II from photoinhibition was higher than or similar to that in well-watered plants. Compared with water-stressed cotton leaves for which wilting movement was permitted, water-stressed cotton leaves restrained from such movement had significantly increased leaf temperature and instantaneous CO2 assimilation rates in the short term, but reduced Yield, qP, and F v/F m. In the long term, predrawn F v/F m and CO2 assimilation capacity were reduced in water-stressed leaves restrained from wilting movement. These results suggest that, under water stress, leaf wilting movement could reduce the incident light on leaves and their heat load, alleviate damage to the photosynthetic apparatus due to photoinhibition, and maintain considerable carbon assimilation capacity in the long term despite a partial loss of instantaneous carbon assimilation in the short term.  相似文献

The role of the mature leaf in supplying carbon for growth inother parts of the plant was examined using a steady-rate 14CO2labelling technique. The pattern of events occurring in theleaf during one complete 24 h cycle was compared in plants grownin, and adapted to long and short photoperiods. The rates ofleaf photosynthesis, night respiration and daytime loss of carbonfrom the growing regions of the plant Were similar in long orshort photoperiods. As a percentage of the total carbon fixedduring the photoperiod, total respiration was c. 50% for shortday plants but only 25% for long day plants. Thirty to forty per cent of the carbon fixed during the photoperiodwas retained in the leaf for export during darkness—therest was exported immediately. In leaves of short day plantssucrose and starch were the main form of the stored carbon.By the end of the dark period these compounds had been almostcompletely depleted. In leaves of long day plants there weremuch larger basal levels of sucrose and starch, upon which thediurnal variations were superimposed. These leaves also accumulatedfructosans. The delay in starch remobilization previously foundin leaves of short day plants was also evident in leaves oflong day plants even though large concentrations of sucroseand fructosans were present This suggests the presence of distinctpools of sucrose in the leaf.  相似文献

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) was investigated in leaves and stems of the succulent C4 dicot Portulaca oleracea L. Diurnal acid fluctuations, CO2 gas exchange, and leaf resistance were monitored under various photoperiod and watering regimes. No CAM activity was seen in well watered plants grown under 16-hour days. Under 8-hour days, however, well watered plants showed a CAM-like pattern of acid fluctuation with amplitudes of 102 and 90 microequivalents per gram fresh weight for leaves and stems, respectively. Similar patterns were also observed in detached leaves and defoliated stems. Leaf resistance values indicated that stomata were open during part of the dark period, but night acidification most likely resulted from refixation of respiratory CO2. In water-stressed plants maximum acid accumulations were reduced under both long and short photoperiods. At night, these plants showed short periods of net CO2 uptake and stomatal opening which continued all night long during preliminary studies under natural environmental conditions. Greatest acid fluctuations, in P. oleracea, with amplitudes of 128 microequivalents per gram fresh weight, were observed in water-stressed plants which had been rewatered, especially when grown under short days. No net CO2 uptake took place, but stomata remained open throughout the night under these conditions. These results indicate that under certain conditions, such as water stress or short photoperiods, P. oleracea is capable of developing an acid metabolism with many similarities to CAM.  相似文献

The earliest visible responses of spinach plants (Spinacia oleracea L., cv. Savoy Hybrid 612) transferred from short to long days (8 hours of high intensity light supplemented with 16 hours of low intensity illumination from incandescent lamps) were upright leaf orientation and increased elongation of the petioles. The effect of long days on growth rate was direct; i.e., there was no after-effect if the plants were transferred to short days. Gibberellin A3 applied to plants under short days had an effect similar to that of long days, whereas application of the growth retardant AMO-1618 [2′-isopropyl-4′-(trimethylammonium chloride)-5′-methylphenyl piperidinel-carboxylate] under long days caused a growth habit typical of short-day conditions. Gibberellin A3 caused more stem growth in plants under long days in which the endogenous gibberellin content had been reduced by AMO-1618 than in plants under short days not treated with the growth retardant.  相似文献

Abstact The three plant types ofAmaranthus namely,A. caudatus f.albiflorus, A. caudatus f.caudatus andA. tricolor var.tristis are qualitative short day plants with critical photoperiods 16.0, 15.5 and 15.0 h, respectively. Gibberellins A3, A4+7 and A13 affect extension growth, leaf differentiation and floral induction differently. Thus, in all the three plant types ofAmaranthus, whereas, GA3 and G4+7 enhanced extension growth, GA13 was completely ineffective under both, 24- and 8-h photoperiods. None of the three gibberellins could affect the leaf differentiation. In all the three plant types, flowering was promoted by GA13 and not by other gibberellins tried. GA13 caused promotion was manifested in two manners, firstly by lowering the critical dark period requirement in each inductive cycle, and secondly by shortening the total period taken for the initiation of inflorescence primordia under inductive photoperiods. The floral induction by gibberellins inAmaranthus is contrary to the gibberellin-anthesin concept of Chailakhyan. It is suggested that gibberellins other than GA3 may be playing an important role in floral morphogenesis of short day plants.  相似文献

Abstract. In order to explore whether seed size affects plant response to elevated CO2, plants grown from red oak (Quercus rubra L.) acorns were studied for differences in their first year response to CO2 concentrations of 350 and 700 μl/l. Overall, at final harvest, total biomass of plants grown in elevated CO2 were 47 % larger than that of plants grown in ambient CO2. There were significant interactions between CO2 treatments and initial acorn mass for total biomass, as well as for root, leaf, and stem biomass. Although total biomass increased with increasing initial acorn mass for both high and ambient CO2 plants, high CO2 plants exhibited a greater increase than ambient CO2 plants, as indicated by a steeper slope in high CO2 plants. However, CO2 levels did not affect biomass partitioning traits, such as root/shoot ratio, leaf, stem, and root weight ratios, and leaf area ratio. These results suggest that variation in seed size or initial plant size can cause intraspecific variation in response to elevated CO2.  相似文献

Apical buds of Spinacia oleracea L. cv. Matador were isolated from 7-day-old vegetative seedlings and grown in sterile culture under inductive long, or non-inductive short photoperiods. Flowering of isolated apices was inducible in long days in approximately 75% of the plants, and in short days by gibberellin treatment (about 40%) or by raising the temperature to 30–32°C (13%). In long days the percentage of flowering was further increased by gibberellin treatment (up to 90%), while it was unaffected by abscisic acid and was strongly decreased by Amo 1618 (55%). In long days the ratio of male to female plants was near 1. The percentage of female plants in long days was increased by gibberellins, and the percentage of male ones decreased by kinetin; as a consequence, the ratio of male to female plants was lowered to about 0.50 in both cases. Abscisic acid and Amo 1618 had the opposite effect, probably because they decreased the flowering in female plants, so that the sex ratio was shifted to 2.6 and 6.8, respectively. Simultaneous treatment with GA3 reversed the effect of abscisic acid on the sex ratio, but the reversal of the shift to maleness induced by Amo 1618 was only partial. In short days, gibberellins also stimulated the flowering in female plants more than in male. However, when the flowering was induced by higher temperature, most flowering plants were male and kinetin increased their percentage further. The above results have been discussed in terms of different requirements for flowering in male and female plants.  相似文献

The effect of leaf shape variation on plant-herbivore interactions has primarily been studied from the perspective of host seeking behavior. Yet for leaf shape to affect plant-herbivore coevolution, there must be reciprocal effects of leaf shape variation on herbivore consumption and performance. We investigated whether alternative leaf morphs affected the performance of three generalist insect herbivores by taking advantage of a genetic polymorphism and developmental plasticity in leaf shape in the Ivyleaf morning glory, Ipomoea hederacea. Across four experiments, we found variable support for an effect of leaf shape genotype on insects. For cabbage loopers (Trichoplusia ni) and corn earworms (Helicoverpa zea) we found opposing, non-significant trends: T. ni gained more biomass on lobed genotypes, while H. zea gained more biomass on heart-shaped genotypes. For army beetworms (Spodoptera exigua), the effects of leaf shape genotype differed depending on the age of the plants and photoperiod of growing conditions. Caterpillars feeding on tissue from older plants (95 days) grown under long day photoperiods had significantly greater consumption, dry biomass, and digestive efficiency on lobed genotypes. In contrast, there were no significant differences between heart-shaped and lobed genotypes for caterpillars feeding on tissue from younger plants (50 days) grown under short day photoperiods. For plants grown under short days, we found that S. exigua consumed significantly less leaf area when feeding on mature leaves than juvenile leaves, regardless of leaf shape genotype. Taken together, our results suggest that the effects of leaf shape variation on insect performance are likely to vary between insect species, growth conditions of the plant, and the developmental stage and age of leaves sampled. When plants of Silene coeli-rosa (L.) Godron were induced by seven long days, then exposed to darkness for 48 h before being returned to short days, they went on to initiate flowers with a delay of about 2 d. The synchronisation of cell division which normally occurs before flower initiation was suppressed, showing that it is not essential for flowering. Periods of darkness of up to 240 h inhibited apical growth and leaf initiation but did not prevent eventual flowering in short days. The commitment of the apex to flower was therefore maintained while apical growth was inhibited.Abbreviations SD short day(s) - LD long day(s)  相似文献

Grassland plants suffer regular defoliation, causing loss of photosynthetic activity and internal resources. Consequently, re‐foliation may be substrate‐limited. The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that decreased C import in leaf growth zones is (partially) compensated by: (i) mobilization of substrate within growth zones; and (ii) increased efficiency of substrate use in leaf area expansion; but (iii) that these processes depend on the C status of growth zones at defoliation. Mixtures of a C3 (Lolium perenne L.) and a C4 grass (Paspalum dilatatum Poir.) were grown at 15 °C (C3 dominance) and 23 °C (C4 dominance). Individual plants thus grew in contrasting (light and temperature) environments before being defoliated. Defoliation caused a drastic and immediate decrease in C import, but effects on leaf area expansion were buffered by biomass mobilization in the growth zone and increases in specific leaf area of produced tissue. Thus, over the first 2 d post‐defoliation, the amount of leaf area produced per unit imported C increased by 39 to 102% depending on treatment. The magnitude of these buffering responses was correlated with the concentration of water soluble carbohydrates in the growth zone at defoliation. Similar responses were observed for N, although defoliation effects were smaller and delayed relative to those on C import. This study demonstrates refoliation is sustained by short‐term mobilization of reserves within the growth zone and reduced costs of produced leaf area, but that these mechanisms depend on growth zone C status at defoliation.  相似文献

Tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were grown on long or short photoperiods followed by 5 minutes of red or far red radiation each day. Plants that received 16-hour photoperiods had a significantly higher concentration of total alkaloids and total phenolics than those that received 8-hour photoperiods. Significantly higher total alkaloid content was found in plants that received red rather than far red radiation last each day. Within each photoperiod, plants that received far red had higher concentrations of soluble phenols, particularly of chlorogenic acid. The interactions among these variables upon alkaloid and phenolic contents are discussed.  相似文献

Sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) grown in low-P (9–12 ppm) and high-P (420 ppm) soil inoculated with or without Glomus intraradices (G.i.), were evaluated for biomass, carbohydrates, ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) activity, leaf 14CO2 incorporation, and other physiological parameters. Growth of plants in the low-P, noninoculated soil was lowest, with total dry biomass reduced up to half of the low-P, inoculum treatment. Total nonstructural carbohydrates were 40% lower in leaves of plants in the low-P, noninoculated soil, compared with the other treatments. Inoculation of the low-P soil enhanced leaf 14CO2 incorporation by 67%, total chlorophyll content by 28%, and RuBPCase activity by 42%, compared with low-P, noninoculated treatment. Improved P-use efficiency by G.i. in low-P soil was comparable to high-P nutrition in improving leaf 14CO2 incorporation and concentration of major leaf photosynthetic products that include starch and sucrose. Leaf PEPCase activity in the low-P, noninoculated treatment, however, was at least threefold higher than the other treatments, suggesting a possible alteration in organic acid metabolism in sour orange leaves as a result of P deficiency.  相似文献

Lam , S. L., and A. C. Leopold . (Purdue U., Lafayette, Indiana.) Reversion and reinduction of flowering in Perilla. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(4): 306–310. Illus. 1961.—Plants of Perilla crispa (Thunb.) Tanaka ultimately revert to the vegetative state provided that they have received not more than about 20 cycles of short photoperiods. Reversion is markedly promoted by repeated debudding of plants induced with 35 cycles or less. Reverted plants of Perilla could be reinduced twice by photoperiodic treatment of the originally induced leaves. Timing experiments to measure the flow of flower stimulus from induced leaves suggest a gradual loss of the stimulus, as indicated by increased time to appearance of flowers and decreased flower number. It is concluded that after the inductive treatment is withdrawn, the effectiveness of the flower stimulus coming from the leaf declines with time. It is suggested that reversion is made possible by the decline of effective flower stimulus coming from the induced leaves.  相似文献

The effects of photosynthetic periods and light intensity on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) carbon exchange rates and photoassimilate partitioning were determined in relation to the activities of galactinol synthase and sucrose-phosphate synthase. Carbon assimilation and partitioning appeared to be controlled by different mechanisms. Carbon exchange rates were influenced by total photon flux density, but were nearly constant over the entire photoperiod for given photoperiod lengths. Length of the photosynthetic periods did influence photoassimilate partitioning. Assimilate export rate was decreased by more than 60% during the latter part of the short photoperiod treatment. This decrease in export rate was associated with a sharp increase in leaf starch acccumulation rate. Results were consistent with the hypothesis that starch accumulation occurs at the expense of export under short photoperiods. Galactinol synthase activities did not appear to influence the partitioning of photoassimilates between starch and transport carbohydrates. Sucrose phosphate synthase activities correlated highly with sugar formation rates (sucrose, raffinose, stachyose + assimilate export rate, r = 0.93, α = 0.007). Cucumber leaf sucrose phosphate synthase fluctuated diurnally in a similar pattern to that observed in vegetative soybean plants.  相似文献

The plants of mustard (Brassica juncea L.) were treated with 0, 25 and 50 ΜM gibberellic acid (GA3) at three fully developed leaf stage (30 d after sowing). Effect of GA3 on carbonic anhydrase activity, photosynthetic rate, leaf area index and dry mass was studied at 50, 70 and 90 d after sowing. At harvest 1000 seed mass, pod number and seed yield were recorded. GA3 treatment (50 ΜM) enhanced all the characteristics studied.  相似文献

The extent of natural variation among wild type Arabidopsis thaliana L. Heynh for response to environmental stimuli that affect flowering is poorly documented. The effects of photoperiod and vernalization on the number of rosette leaves at the time of anthesis was measured for 32 Arabidopsis ecotypes. All ecotypes were vernalized 24 days at 4 C under continuous illumination. Vernalized and nonvernalized plants were transplanted into 8- (short-day) and 20-hour (long-day) photoperiods in controlled environment growth chambers. Two ecotypes failed to flower after 110 days. Mean leaf number was less for all ecotypes under long day compared to short day. Sixteen ecotypes responded to vernalization; eight had reduced leaf number regardless of photoperiod, and eight had reduced leaf number only under short day. Two ecotypes required vernalization to flower in this study. For three ecotypes, vernalization and short day resulted in a reduction in leaf number whereas vernalization and long day resulted in increased leaf number. Documentation of the effects and interactions of photoperiod and vernalization across many ecotypes provides a broader range of described natural variation for genetic and physiologic study.  相似文献
