The collective behaviour of animal and human groups emerges from the individual decisions and actions of their constituent members. Recent research has revealed many ways in which the behaviour of groups can be influenced by differences amongst their constituent individuals. The existence of individual differences that have implications for collective behaviour raises important questions. How are these differences generated and maintained? Are individual differences driven by exogenous factors, or are they a response to the social dilemmas these groups face? Here I consider the classic case of patch selection by foraging agents under conditions of social competition. I introduce a multilevel model wherein the perceptual sensitivities of agents evolve in response to their foraging success or failure over repeated patch selections. This model reveals a bifurcation in the population, creating a class of agents with no perceptual sensitivity. These agents exploit the social environment to avoid the costs of accurate perception, relying on other agents to make fitness rewards insensitive to the choice of foraging patch. This provides a individual-based evolutionary basis for models incorporating perceptual limits that have been proposed to explain observed deviations from the Ideal Free Distribution (IFD) in empirical studies, while showing that the common assumption in such models that agents share identical sensory limits is likely false. Further analysis of the model shows how agents develop perceptual strategic niches in response to environmental variability. The emergence of agents insensitive to reward differences also has implications for societal resource allocation problems, including the use of financial and prediction markets as mechanisms for aggregating collective wisdom.  相似文献

Increasing doses of alkylating agents such as N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, diethyl sulphate and ethylmethane sulphonate cause an inhibition of the expression of the recA and sfiA genes of wild-type Escherichia coli. This behaviour was not observed in a lexA56 mutant which has a defective LexA repressor that is unable to bind to the SOS operator. Furthermore, an ada-1 mutant showed the same behaviour as the wild-type strain indicating that the adaptive proteins are not responsible for the inhibition of recA and sfiA at high doses of alkylating agents. These results suggest that the inhibitory effect of these alkylating agents may be found in the interaction between the LexA repressor and the control regions of sfiA and recA. On the other hand, high doses of either UV light or mitomycin C produced only a slight decrease in the induction of recA and sfiA, whereas bleomycin had no effect. The fact that a repressor structurally related to LexA repressor, such as LacI protein, showed the same behaviour as the LexA repressor when a Lac+ strain was treated with alkylating agents, suggests that these compounds can modify the binding abilities of repressors to DNA, producing a limited or even abolished release of repressors, and so decreasing the expression of inducible genes.  相似文献

In a mixed strategy, game-theoretical scenario mimicking the behaviour of fishing vessels competing for a limited renewable resource, agents following either a Collective Intelligence or a purely selfish strategy quickly outperform fully cooperative teams as well as agents not planning for future action by acting randomly. The stable balance between fully selfish agents and the Collective Intelligence depends subtly on the ratio of instantaneous demand to instantaneously available resource as well as on the dynamics of the resource itself. This suggests use of ratio of strategies as an indicator of the level of resource exploitation. The Collective Intelligence performance proves to be extremely robust to uncertain information, especially when longer records of historical catch are accounted for.  相似文献

We developed an innovative micropore system that enables us to directly observe the constrained behaviour of predatory nematodes. Polymeric microbubbles (MBs) are gas filled particles composed of a thin stabilized polymer shell that have been recently developed as valid contrast agents for the combined use of ultrasonography (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single photon emission computer tomography (SPECT) imaging. Due to their buoyancy, the commonly available approaches to study their behaviour in complex media are not easily applicable and their use in modern medicine requires such behaviour to be fully elucidated. Here we have used for the first time flow cytometry as a new high throughput approach that allows characterisation of the MB dispersion, prior to and after exposure in different biological media and we have additionally developed a method that allows characterisation of the strongly bound proteins adsorbed on the MBs, to fully predict their biological behaviour in biological milieu.  相似文献

The theory of behaviour-based systems (or autonomous agents) constitutes a useful approach for the modelling of intracellular signalling networks. In this sense, a cell can be seen as an adaptive autonomous agent or as a society of such agents, where each can exhibit a particular behaviour depending on its cognitive capabilities. We present an intracellular signalling model obtained by integrating several computational techniques into an agent-based paradigm. Cellulat, the model, takes into account two essential aspects of the intracellular signalling networks: (1) cognitive capacities, which are modelled as the agent abilities to interact with the surrounding medium and (2) a spatial organisation, this last obtained using a shared data structure through which the agents communicate between them. We propose a methodology for the modelling of intracellular signalling pathway using Cellulat and we discuss the goal of a virtual laboratory based on our model and presently under development.  相似文献

Feeding behaviour plays a significant role in promoting good animal health and welfare. It is also reflective of the quality and quantity of available feed. In fact, grazing livestock do not select their feed randomly, rather their behaviour is influenced by the texture, taste, and smell of each pasture species. Although taste agents are often used to modify feed intake for captive livestock, the effect on the feeding behaviour of grazing livestock has not yet been extensively evaluated in native grasslands. To address this gap in knowledge, herein, we sprayed three types of taste agents—salty (SA), sweet (SW), and bitter (BT)—on alpine meadows to investigate their effect on the grazing behaviour of yaks (Bos Grunniens) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). Behavioural observations showed that grazing was concentrated primarily in the morning and afternoon, while ruminating/resting peaked at noon; however, the diurnal behavioural patterns of grazing yaks were not affected by the taste agents. Application of the SA agent significantly increased the yaks’ grazing time, bites per minute, bites per step, time per feeding station, and steps per feeding station, while significantly reducing walking time, steps per minute, and number of feeding stations per minute. Meanwhile, application of the SW agent significantly increased the yaks’ time per feeding station, however, significantly reduced the steps per minute and number of feeding stations per minute. In contrast, the BT agent significantly increased the yaks’ walking time, steps per minute, and number of feeding stations per minute, while significantly reducing grazing time, bites per minute, bites per step, and time per feeding station. Application of the SA agent also significantly increased the intake of favoured, edible, and inedible forage, while the SW agent improved inedible forage intake, however, had a more subtle effect on favoured and edible forage intake. Meanwhile, the BT agent had an inhibitory effect on grazing intake. Hence, the structural equation model suggested that taste agents may directly or indirectly influence grazing behaviour by regulating feeding behaviour. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for using taste agents in grasslands to control the grazing behaviour of livestock and provide a method to promote the stability of grassland communities, while mitigating the degradation of grasslands in the QTP.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effectiveness of spiking agents when trained with reinforcement learning (RL) in a challenging multiagent task. In particular, it explores learning through reward-modulated spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) and compares it to reinforcement of stochastic synaptic transmission in the general-sum game of the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (IPD). More specifically, a computational model is developed where we implement two spiking neural networks as two "selfish" agents learning simultaneously but independently, competing in the IPD game. The purpose of our system (or collective) is to maximise its accumulated reward in the presence of reward-driven competing agents within the collective. This can only be achieved when the agents engage in a behaviour of mutual cooperation during the IPD. Previously, we successfully applied reinforcement of stochastic synaptic transmission to the IPD game. The current study utilises reward-modulated STDP with eligibility trace and results show that the system managed to exhibit the desired behaviour by establishing mutual cooperation between the agents. It is noted that the cooperative outcome was attained after a relatively short learning period which enhanced the accumulation of reward by the system. As in our previous implementation, the successful application of the learning algorithm to the IPD becomes possible only after we extended it with additional global reinforcement signals in order to enhance competition at the neuronal level. Moreover it is also shown that learning is enhanced (as indicated by an increased IPD cooperative outcome) through: (i) strong memory for each agent (regulated by a high eligibility trace time constant) and (ii) firing irregularity produced by equipping the agents' LIF neurons with a partial somatic reset mechanism.  相似文献

A real-time artificial intelligence method for controlling the concentration of dissolved oxygen is proposed. Two projection versions of algorithms are considered in this paper. The versions vary in structure of the intelligent agents. One of the agents represents an automaton of expedient behaviour, the structure of the other consists of two automata which behave expediently in a complicated random medium. The first algorithm holds a check on a trend of change in values. The second version of the algorithm takes into account both the trend of change in the values and the speed of change in the values. Simulation studies show that expedient behaviour of the automata in the random medium for the control of dissolved oxygen concentration can bring about a good performance.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that cells contain numerous negative feedback control systems which are frequently invoked for their ability to maintain homeostasis. There is no reason to believe that the replicating cell is an exception yet paradoxically it is a highly dynamic entity in that the levels of constituents vary with time. The inconsistency between theory and observation is easily resolvable if (a) the events of the cell cycle reflect the oscillatory behaviour of certain of the regulatory processes, and, (b) proliferation control is exerted via transitions between periodic and aperiodic (or damped periodic) states as the result of changes in the values of the parameters determining the behaviour of the system. This concept is briefly discussed in relation to: the wide variety of agents that can affect replication; the existence of distinct non-proliferative states; the continuous control of proliferation rate; variations in the sensitivity toward cell cycle inhibitory agents; senescence; the ‘loss’ of control of cell division in cancer.  相似文献

Swarming is a type of social motility allowing the migration of highly differentiated bacterial cells. Swarming shares many similarities with biofilm communities, which are notable for their high resistance to antimicrobial agents. We investigate here if the swarming behaviour could also be associated with a widespread antimicrobial resistant phenotype. Challenged with 13 antibiotics from various classes, swarm cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Escherichia coli , Serratia marcescens , Burkholderia thailandensis and Bacillus subtilis showed higher resistance than their planktonic counterparts to all the antibiotics tested, except for the antimicrobial peptides. Using P. aeruginosa as a model, this multiresistant phenotype was shown to be transient and intrinsically linked to the swarming state. Resistance of swarm cells towards other antimicrobial agents, such as triclosan and a heavy metal (arsenite), was also observed. Neither RND-type efflux pumps, including MexAB-OprM, MexCD-OprJ, MexEF-OprN and MexXY-OprM, nor a biofilm-associated resistance mechanism involving periplasmic glucans, appear to account for the resistance of swarm cells. Together with the high resistance of biofilms, these results support the hypothesis that antimicrobial resistance is a general feature of bacterial multicellularity. Swarming motility might thus represent a form of social behaviour useful as a model to investigate biofilm antibiotic resistance.  相似文献

We study the emergence of collective spatio-temporal objects in biological systems by representing individually the elementary interactions between their microscopic components. We use the immune system as a prototype for such interactions. The results of this detailed explicit analysis are compared with the traditional procedure of representing the collective dynamics in terms of densities that obey partial differential equations. The simulations show even for very simple elementary reactions the spontaneous emergence of localized complex structures, from microscopic noise. In turn the effective dynamics of these structures affects the average behaviour of the system in a very decisive way: systems which would according to the differential equations approximation die, display in reality a very lively behaviour. As the optimal modelling method we propose a mixture of microscopic simulation systems describing each reaction separately, and continuous methods describing the average behaviour of the agents.  相似文献

Motion camouflage is a stealth behaviour observed both in hover-flies and in dragonflies. Existing controllers for mimicking motion camouflage generate this behaviour on an empirical basis or without considering the kinematic motion restrictions present in animal trajectories. This study summarises our formal contributions to solve the generation of motion camouflage as a non-linear optimal control problem. The dynamics of the system capture the kinematic restrictions to motion of the agents, while the performance index ensures camouflage trajectories. An extensive set of simulations support the technique, and a novel analysis of the obtained trajectories contributes to our understanding of possible mechanisms to obtain sensor based motion camouflage, for instance, in mobile robots.  相似文献

Low-dose heparin, dipyridamole (alone and in combination with aspirin), and flurbiprofen were evaluated as potential prophylactic agents against deep venous thrombosis in elderly patients with hip fractures. None of the agents that modify platelet behaviour could reduct the frequency of isotopically diagnosed venous thrombosis. Low-dose heparin reduced the overall frequency of venous thrombosis and its extent as judged by the frequency of bilaterally abnormal scans, but this reduction did not achieve statistical significance.  相似文献

This article investigates the emergence of robust behaviour in agents with dynamically limited controllers (monostable agents), and compares their performance to less limited ones (bistable agents). 'Dynamically limited' here refers to a reduced quantity of steady states that an agent controller exhibits when it does not receive stimulus from the environment. Agents are evolved for categorical perception, a minimal cognitive task, and must correlate approaching or avoiding movements based on (two) different types of objects. Results indicate a significant tendency to better behavioural robustness by monostable in contrast to bistable agents in the presence of sensorimotor, mutational, and structural perturbations. Discussions here focus on a further dependence to coupled dynamics by the former agents to explain such a tendency.  相似文献

The effect of basic peptides on the gelation of a pectin from the cell wall of tomato was examined through the determination of gel stiffness, and swelling behaviour of the gel in water. Poly-L-lysine, poly-L-arginine, and a synthetic peptide, designed to mimic a sequence of basic amino acids found in a plant cell wall extensin, act as crosslinking agents. Circular dichroism studies on the interaction of synthetic extensin peptides with sodium polygalacturonate demonstrated that a conformational change was induced as a result of their complexation. In addition to their effect as crosslinking agents, the polycationic peptides reduced the swelling of the pectin network in water.  相似文献

The behavioural response of an insect to a fungal pathogen will have a direct effect on the efficacy of the fungus as a biological control agent. In this paper we describe two processes that have a significant effect on the interactions between insects and entomopathogenic fungi: (a) the ability of target insects to detect and avoid fungal pathogens and (b) the transmission of fungal pathogens between host insects. The behavioural interactions between insects and entomopathogenic fungi are described for a variety of fungal pathogens ranging from commercially available bio-pesticides to non-formulated naturally occurring pathogens. The artificial manipulation of insect behaviour using dissemination devices to contaminate insects with entomopathogenic fungi is then described. The implications of insect behaviour on the use of fungal pathogens as biological control agents are discussed.  相似文献
