Changes in technology are fundamentally reframing our concept of what constitutes a model organism. Nevertheless, research advances in the more traditional model organisms have enabled fresh and exciting opportunities for young scientists to establish new careers and offer the hope of comprehensive understanding of fundamental processes in life. New advances in translational research can be expected to heighten the importance of basic research in model organisms and expand opportunities. However, researchers must take special care and implement new resources to enable the newest members of the community to engage fully with the remarkable legacy of information in these fields.  相似文献

A biomechanical model of the foot   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The foot is modeled as a statically indeterminate structure supporting its load at the heads of the five metatarsals and the tuberosity of the calcaneous. The distribution of support is determined through an analysis of the deformations caused in the structure as a result of the forces at these locations. The analysis includes the effect of the plantar aponeurosis and takes into account the deformation of the metatarsals and bending of the joints. A parametric study is presented to illustrate the behavior of the solution under a broad range of conditions.  相似文献

A general nonlinear model of the predator-prey relationship is proposed. The model is justified on biological grounds and its parameters are constrained to reasonable biological values. Analytical and graphical methods are used to classify and to analyze the equilibrium points of the model. Finally, numerical integration on a digital computer illustrates the nature of the model solutions.  相似文献

The interaction of forces that produce chest wall motion and lung volume change is complex and incompletely understood. To aid understanding we have developed a simple model that allows prediction of the effect on chest wall motion of changes in applied forces. The model is a lever system on which the forces generated actively by the respiratory muscles and passively by impedances of rib cage, lungs, abdomen, and diaphragm act at fixed sites. A change in forces results in translational and/or rotational motion of the lever; motion represents volume change. The distribution and magnitude of passive relative to active forces determine the locus and degree of rotation and therefore the effect of an applied force on motion of the chest wall, allowing the interaction of diaphragm, rib cage, and abdomen to be modeled. Analysis of moments allow equations to be derived that express the effect on chest wall motion of the active component in terms of the passive components. These equations may be used to test the model by comparing predicted with empirical behavior. The model is simple, appears valid for a variety of respiratory maneuvers, is useful in interpreting relative motion of rib cage and abdomen and may be useful in quantifying the effective forces acting on the rib cage.  相似文献

The plant-to-plant movement of insects in one of the factors determining the distribution of individuals in insect populations. In this report the movement of barley aphids was analyzed by a statistical model. The model is represented as the convolution of three probability functions:
  1. The probability that s individuals are found on a plant at time t0:Q(s);
  2. The probability that i individuals leave the plant and remain on the ground from time t0 to t1:sCipiqs−i and p+q=1, where p and q are the proportions of individuals which do not leave a plant and which leave it once or more, respectively;
  3. The probability that j individuals climb a plant between time t0 to t1 and stay there at time t1:e−λλj!, where λ is the mean of the individuals.
The probability that l individuals are located on a plant at time t1 is represented by the following equation It was shown by simple experiments that the experimental populations were well fitted to the model.  相似文献

A model is presented for the operation of the striatum. The model posits that the basal ganglia are responsible for driving smooth transitions of state for an organism. We propose that this is accomplished through the computation of a potential function within the striatum on which a gradient descent is performed toward the goal state. The model suggests that various somatotopic regions of the striatum correspond to state spaces, each of which pertains to a different aspect of the organism. This paper discusses this model only in the context of motor control, i.e., egomotion and limb movement. The model appears to account for a variety of experimental results, and for some unusual properties of the striatum.  相似文献

This article describes a mathematical model of the Pacinian corpuscle based on the analysis of the available experimental data and on previous theoretical research. The model includes the main anatomofunctional constituents of the corpuscle: the capsula and the mechano-to-neural transduction; its structure accounts for the formation of the receptor potential and of the spikes on the nerve terminal. Comparison of the theoretical predictions with the experimental results, in response to different types of stimuli provides a substantial validation of the model and an explanation for the basic aspects of the transduction, in particular for: a) the receptor potential time course for isolated stimuli; b) the frequency response, in terms of receptor potential ;c) the frequency threshold curve for the spikes; d) the firing rate, I.S.I. and P.S.T. histograms and the synchronization coefficient, in response to sustained sinusoidal inputs. Possible lines for future experimental research are suggested from the model predictions.  相似文献

The B-to-Z transition in supercoiled circular DNA is modeled as a strain-induced nonlinear excitation process. Using a model, in which DNA is regarded as a chain of units with a bistable energy function along the twisting coordinate together with a harmonic inter-unit interaction, we show that a Z region and the accompanying two B-Z junctions of finite width appear naturally as a solution of nonlinear equations, when the strain exceeds a critical value. We examine the B-Z transition behaviour as a function of twist under various situations. We also analyse available experimental results on B-Z transition in supercoiled plasmid with G-C insertions by this mechanistic model in order to estimate the magnitude of model parameters. The energy barrier of the B-Z transition is estimated to be of the order of 1 kcal/mole per base pair. The analysis shows that if the length of the insertion is less than a certain value, the entire insertion converts to Z form at a transition point, but if the insertion is much longer, the B-Z transition exhibits a different behavior, in which part of the insertion flips to Z form and the Z region expands linearly upon changing linking number.  相似文献

In this paper a mathematical model of the retina was proposed to clarify the spatio-temporal information processing mechanism in the retina of vertebrates. In order to explain spatio-temporal characteristics of an on-center receptive field of a ganglion cell, excitatory and inhibitory cell layers were introduced of which time lags increased with the lateral distance from a point of stimulation. The characteristics of this model were found to agree well with the physiological data: e.g., this model shows on-response to the input stimulus given on the center, off-response to the input on the surround, and on-off response to the input on the border between on- and off-response regions of the on-center field.  相似文献

Summary A simple statistical model is constructed, describing the transition from disorder to order in a population of mutually catalytic molecules undergoing random mutations. The consequences of the model are calculated, and its possible relevance to the problem of the origin of life is discussed. The main conclusion of the analysis is that the model allows populations of several thousand molecular units to make the transition from disorder to order with reasonable probability.  相似文献

A model of the peripheral auditory system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Recent electrophysiological data obtained from auditory nerve fibers of cats have made possible the formulation of a model of the peripheral auditory system that relates the all-or-none activity of these fibers to acoustic stimulation. The components of the model are intended to represent the major functional components of the peripheral system. These components are: (i) a linear mechanical system intended to represent the outer, middle, and mechanical parts of the inner ear; (ii) a transducer intended to represent the action of the sensory cells; and (iii) a model neuron whose properties are intended to represent the nerve excitation process. A general-purpose digital computer has been used to determine the response of the model to a variety of acoustic stimuli. These results have been compared with data obtained from auditory nerve fibers.This work was supported in part by the Joint Services Electronics Program (Contract DA 36-039-AMC-03200(E); and in part by the National Science Foundation (Grant GP-2495), the National Institutes of Health (Grant MH-04737-05), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Grant NsG-496); and by Research Grant NB-01344, National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness of the National Institutes of Health, Public Health Service.  相似文献

In this paper, a control theoretic model of the forearm is developed and analyzed, and a computational method for predicting muscle activations necessary to generate specified motions is described. A detailed geometric model of the forearm kinematics, including the carrying angle and models of how the biceps and the supinator tendons wrap around the bones, is used. Also, including a dynamics model, the final model is a system of differential equations where the muscle activations play the role of control signals. Due to the large number of muscles, the problem of finding muscle activations is redundant, and this problem is solved by an optimization procedure. The computed muscle activations for ballistic movements clearly recaptures the triphasic ABC (Activation-Braking-Clamping) pattern. It is also transparent, from the muscle activation patterns, how the muscles cooperate and counteract in order to accomplish desired motions. A comparison with previously reported experimental data is included and the model predictions can be seen to be partially in agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

I propose a transduction model of the Meissner corpuscle that integrates ideas put forth by Freeman and Johnson and results obtained by Looft. The principal development in the present model is its specification that RA receptor potentials are updated as a linear function of stimulus velocity above baseline; the model thus readily accommodates non-sinusoidal input. It also incorporates modifications to Freeman and Johnson's model proposed by Slavík and Bell, namely a period of refractoriness lasting 1 ms followed by a period of hyperexcitability lasting 13.5 ms. The model is applied to various psychophysical and physiological situations: psychophysical threshold vs. frequency, RA afferent impulse rates vs. intensity, impulse regularity vs. frequency, phase retardation vs. frequency, and responses to non-repeating noise and to complex stimuli. Model output closely matches psychophysical and neurophysiological data. The proposed model thus reliably predicts RA afferent responses to arbitrary stimuli and may facilitate the development of theories relating psychophysical phenomena to their underlying neural representations.  相似文献
