We assessed whether behavioral markers could be used to evaluate pair compatibility and predict pair bond success of captive‐reared San Clemente loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus mearnsi) released into the wild. Potential breeding pairs of shrikes were introduced at the Zoological Society of San Diego's captive‐breeding facility and then moved to release cages located in suitable but unoccupied habitat. Courting pairs were affected negatively by the disturbance of translocation to a new location and generally needed a few days to reinitiate pair bonding in the release enclosures. We separated and returned pairs to captivity when intra‐pair aggression or cessation of all courtship behavior occurred; all other pairs were released into the wild. The rate of nest approaches was the best marker to predict a successful release into the wild (i.e., pairs that remained near the release site and attempted to breed). Additionally, all experienced breeding pairs (i.e., pairs with males and females with prior captive breeding experience) exhibiting nesting behavior were successful, although previous experience alone does not ensure post‐release breeding. Results from this study indicate the importance of assessing behaviors of individuals paired for population augmentation. In using behavioral cues, identifying pairs with a low probability of success is possible, and replacing these pairs with individuals that have a higher likelihood of post‐release success can occur. This strategy will be important to efficiently restore imperiled populations of endangered species while working within temporal and financial constraints. Summary Over a 3-year period, we studied determinants of reproductive success in a population of the migratory Rufous Bush Robin (Cercotrichas galactotes) parasitized by the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus). Seasonal reproductive success (as measured by the number of fledglings produced) depended on the number of successful broods raised. Many breeding attempts failed owing to predation, probably by cuckoos, which mainly affected first and replacement clutches. Clutch size did not follow the general trend for multi-brooded species (mid-season peak), but showed a maximum early in the season, perhaps a consequence of delayed arrivals due to the negative effects of nest predation and parasitism through cuckoos. Interannual differences in several variables of breeding success might be explained by marginally significant between year differences in the number of nests depredated and/or parasitized. Breeding success appeared to be independent of parental body size, but female condition (as measured by the number of light bands) had a powerful effect, with females in poor condition having less fledglings in the season, and lower fledging success (proportion of nestlings that fledged) and nesting success (proportion of eggs that produced fledglings), than females in prime condition. Furthermore, age influenced breeding success, with old individuals producing more and heavier fledglings in the season than did yearlings. Poor breeding success or partner condition were unlikely to initiate divorce, but rates of nest predation, which are probably linked to the male contribution in nest defence, appeared to increase the probability of divorce.
Der Bruterfolg in einer Population des Heckensängers(Cercotrichas galactotes)
Zusammenfassung Von 1993 – 1995 wurde in einer vom Kuckuck (Cuculus canorus) parasitierten Population des Heckensängers (Cercotrichas galactotes) im südliche Spanien untersucht, welche Faktoren den Bruterfolg bestimmen. Der Gesamtreproduktionserfolg (Anzahl flügge Jungvögel) war abhängig von der Anzahl erfolgreicher Bruten. Viele Brutversuche blieben wegen Prädation, wohl durch den Kuckuck, erfolglos, was vornehmlich Erst- und Ersatzbruten betraf. Die Gelegegröße war nicht, wie bei anderen Mehrfachbrütern, zur Mitte der Brutzeit am größten, sondern zu Beginn. Ursache hierfür könnte eine verspätete Rückkehr der Vögel ins Brutgebiet sein, die ihrerseits eine Folge der frühen Nestprädation und der Parasitierung durch den Kuckuck sein könnte. Jährliche Unterschiede werden mit Unterschieden in der Prädationsrate und/oder der Parasitierungsrate erklärt. Der Bruterfolg war unabhängig von der elterlichen Körpergröße. Die Kondition der Weibchen, gemessen an den Wachstumsstreifen im Großgefieder, hatte jedoch einen starken Einfluß. Schwächere Weibchen hatten einen signifikant geringeren Schlüpf-, Ausfliege- und Gesamtbruterfolg als konditionell stärkere Weibchen. Zudem hatten ältere Vögel einen besseren Bruterfolg und kräftigere Junge als Jungvögel in ihrem ersten Brutjahr. Nestprädation, aber nicht geringer Bruterfolg oder physische Kondition der Partner, erhöhte die Scheidungsrate von Paaren.相似文献

Tomato growth was examined in solution culture under constant pH and low levels of NH4+ or NO3?. There were five nitrogen treatments: 20 mmoles m?3 NH4+, 50 mmoles m?3 NO3?, 100 mmoles m?3 NH4+ 200 mmoles m?3 NO3?, and 20 mmoles m?3 NH4++ 50 mmoles m?3 NO3?. The lower concentrations (20 mmoles m?3 NH4+ and 50 mmoles m?3 NO3?) were near the apparent Km for net NH4+ and NO3? uptake; the higher concentrations (100 mmoles m?3 NH4+ and 200 mmoles m?3 NO3?) were near levels at which the net uptake of NH4+ or NO3? saturate. Although organic nitrogen contents for the higher NO3? and the NH4++ NO3? treatments were 22.2–30.3% greater than those for the lower NO3? treatment, relative growth rates were initially only 10–15% faster. After 24 d, relative growth rates were similar among those treatments. These results indicate that growth may be only slightly nitrogen limited when NH4+ or NO3? concentrations are held constant over the root surface at near the apparent Km concentration. Relative growth rates for the two NH4+ treatments were much higher than have been previously reported for tomatoes growing with NH4+ as the sole nitrogen source. Initial growth rates under NH4+ nutrition did not differ significantly (P≥ 0.05) from those under NO3? or under combined NH4++ NO3?. Growth rates slowed after 10–15 d for the NH4+ treatments, whereas they remained more constant for the NO3? and mixed NH4++ NO3? treatments over the entire observation period of 24–33 d. The decline in growth rate under NH4+ nutrition may have resulted from a reduction in Ca2+, K+, and/or Mg2+ absorption. 相似文献

Many species of parasitoids can increase their reproduction through feeding on supplemental sugar sources. We evaluated the longevity both with and without hosts and progeny production of a uniparental strain of Meteorus pulchricornis by varying concentration of the sugar solution and feeding frequency. A 1:1:1 sucrose–glucose–fructose-mixture was tested in a range of concentrations (0–70% (w/v)). The parasitoid lifespan did not increase with the concentration of sugar solutions, but parasitoids feeding on a 30% sugar solution attained greater longevity than parasitoids feeding on other sugar concentrations in the absence of hosts. The same effect of sugar concentration was also observed on progeny production, where when the parasitoid was fed 30% (w/v) sugar solution, its lifetime progeny production doubled in comparison to that fed water, and increased by 50% compared to those fed the other sugar solutions. In the last experiment, we studied the effect of feeding intervals on the longevity and progeny production of M. pulchricornis. Parasitoids fed with a 30% (w/v) 1:1:1 sucrose–glucose–fructose-mixture continuously lived six times longer than unfed parasitoids, three times longer than parasitoids fed only once and two times longer than parasitoids fed once every two days in the absence of hosts. Parasitoids with continuous access to the sugar solution produced considerably more progeny than those with fewer feeding frequencies. This increasing progeny production was accomplished more through an increase in daily offspring production rather than through extending reproductive lifespan. 相似文献

Understanding the winter distributions of migrant birds is important because productivity and recruitment are influenced by conditions at several locations and periods in the life cycle of individuals. The western loggerhead shrike, Lanius ludovicianus excubitorides , is a threatened species in Canada, and its decline is attributed to potential limitations on the wintering grounds. We examined patterns of stable-hydrogen isotope (δD) distributions in feathers of loggerhead shrikes, primarily of L. l. excubitorides , during winter at three regions in north and central Mexico, to establish relative abundance and origins of migrants. We also investigated potential movements of Mexican winter resident individuals. Using shrike museum specimens of known summer provenance, a shrike deuterium base map for Mexico was developed from isotopic measurement of feathers of resident shrikes and use of a recently established feather base map for raptors in North America. Stable hydrogen isotope analyses of inner secondary feather (s9) of all loggerhead shrikes examined in Mexico during winter indicated that north-central (Region A), north-eastern (Region B) and south-central (Region C) sites in Mexico consisted of 28.1%, 73.7% and 63.8% of migrant individuals from northern breeding grounds, respectively. Isotopic evidence suggested movements of a few local residents birds (7.9%) into the Chihuahuan desert from south-western USA and north-eastern Mexico to winter. 相似文献

In many social species, competition and cooperation between group members may lead to a large variance in reproductive success among individuals, especially for adult male. From April to August 2002, we studied the adult male reproductive success of plateau pikas in Haibei Alpine Meadow Ecosystem Research Station, Chinese Academy of Science, using microsatellite analysis of paternity, mark-recapture and behavioral observations. Our result indicated that the reproductive success of adult males had a large variance. Its average was 6 individuals and range was from 0 to 13 individuals. One-third of males sired 63.22% offspring. There was a hierarchy system in polygynandrous families. Although the reproductive success of dominant males was higher than that of subordinate males, subordinate males still play an important role in the reproductive success of the population. 相似文献

The long-term effects of different nitrogen sources on the endogenous IAA and cytokinin levels in two bromeliad species were investigated. In nature, Vriesea philippocoburgii is a tank-forming epiphytic bromeliad which uses the tank water reservoir as a substitute for soil, whereas Tillandsia pohliana is a tankless atmospheric epiphytic species. A culture was established from seeds germinated in aseptic condictions, and the plantlets were grown for 6 months in a modified Knudson medium to which was added 8 mol m−3 of nitrogen in the form of NO3−, NH4+ or urea. The hormonal contents of the bromeliad shoots were determined by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), coupled to an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), isopentenyladenine (iP), isopentenyladenosine ([9R]iP), zeatin (Z) and zeatin riboside ([9R]Z). Nitrogen supplied in the form of urea gave the highest values of fresh and dry weights for both species, and this was positively correlated to IAA levels. The cytokinin patterns showed that isopentenyladenosine was the predominant form for both species in all samples. However, urea induced the highest level of this riboside form and also the highest level of total cytokinins for V. philippocoburgii, while NH4+ had the same effect on the atmospheric species. These results are discussed in terms of the different growth habits of these two species in nature. It is suggested that urea may be an important source of nitrogen often found inside the tank of V. philippocoburgii. NO3− treatment increased the IAA/Cks balance, mainly for V. philippocoburgii, while urea and NH4+ shifted this ratio in favour of cytokinins, thus apparently inhibiting root development in both species. 相似文献

Livestock significantly affect wetland soils and vegetation but their impacts on wetland nutrient dynamics are poorly understood. We set up a full factorial laboratory experiment to assess the effects of Juncus effusus, grazing exclusion, and flooding on P flux from intact cores collected from seasonal wetlands in cattle pastures in south Florida. We collected intact cores from Juncus tussocks and plant interspaces inside and outside 4-year grazing exclosures in five replicate wetlands. We incubated the cores for 50 days under continuous flooding or weekly 1-day flooding cycles and measured P concentrations in surface and pore water. Grazing exclosures had less Juncus (17%) and bare ground (2%) than adjacent grazed areas (Juncus, 48%; bare ground, 12%), but did not affect P fluxes. Initial fluxes of soluble reactive P (SRP) were much higher in cores with Juncus (242 ± 153 mg P m−2 day−1) than without Juncus (14 ± 20 mg P m−2 day−1). In weekly flooded cores P fluxes fell to 19.7 ± 13.4 mg P m−2 day−1 in cores with and 2.7 ± 2.6 in cores without Juncus. The strong effect of Juncus on P flux was an indirect effect of cattle grazing, but 4 years of grazing exclusion did not have a significant effect on P fluxes. 相似文献

The relationship between nitrous oxide (N2O) flux and N availability in agricultural ecosystems is usually assumed to be linear, with the same proportion of nitrogen lost as N2O regardless of input level. We conducted a 3‐year, high‐resolution N fertilizer response study in southwest Michigan USA to test the hypothesis that N2O fluxes increase mainly in response to N additions that exceed crop N needs. We added urea ammonium nitrate or granular urea at nine levels (0–292 kg N ha?1) to four replicate plots of continuous maize. We measured N2O fluxes and available soil N biweekly following fertilization and grain yields at the end of the growing season. From 2001 to 2003 N2O fluxes were moderately low (ca. 20 g N2O‐N ha?1 day?1) at levels of N addition to 101 kg N ha?1, where grain yields were maximized, after which fluxes more than doubled (to >50 g N2O‐N ha?1 day?1). This threshold N2O response to N fertilization suggests that agricultural N2O fluxes could be reduced with no or little yield penalty by reducing N fertilizer inputs to levels that just satisfy crop needs. 相似文献

The reproductive ability related to the population size of the endangered and endemic species Primula merrilliana Schltr.was investigated.In 26 populations observed,only four contain more than 500 flowering individuals,whereas most of them(53.8%) consist of less than 100 flowering individuals.Though the ratio of pin and thrum plants keeps its balance at 1:1 for all populations,the frequency of pin and thrum flowers was significantly biased in most small populations.Population size strongly affected reproductive success; plants in small populations produced significantly fewer flowers and fruits per plant and fewer seeds per fruit,and therefore fewer seeds per plant.The floral density was another important factor that influenced the reproductive success of P.merrilliana,because four main reproductive success parameters (fruits per plant,seeds per fruit,seeds per plant,and the proportion of flowers setting fruit) were all positively correlated with floral density.The size of plants and the number of leaves per plant (measure of habitat quality) were not influenced by the variation of population size,suggesting that the reduced fecundity in small populations may not be a consequence of lower habitat quality,inbreeding depression and pollen limitation as a result of less attractiveness in small populations are therefore likely explanations for these patterns. 相似文献

在陆地生态系统中,生存地段的土壤养分环境构成了植物的“营养生境”。植物在长期进化过程中往往产生对原生营养生境的生态适应,其中对NH4 和NO3-两种无机氮源的吸收、利用特性便可能是这种适应的一个重要方面。由于硝化抑制(限制)或微生物对NO3-的强烈吸收、固持作用,酸性、弱酸性的原始森林土壤中NH4 含量大都远高于NO3-,从而形成了以NH4 占绝对优势的“氮营养生境”。很多针叶树种(尤其是演替晚期阶段占优势者)对其长期所处的NH4 优势生境产生了充分适应,以致对非还原态氮(NO3-)的吸收、利用能力严重下降。这些针叶树往往表现出典型的“喜铵性”,而在NO3-优势环境中则会引起氮代谢失调和生长下降。从氮同化酶、高耐铵性、根对NH4 和NO3-的相对吸收能力及NO3-吸收的反馈控制、养分关系与养分平衡、根部碳流失、光合作用及耐荫性等多方面阐述了喜铵针叶树适应的生理生化机制。这种生态适应可能是顶极森林群落维持长期稳定的重要机制之一,而采伐干扰后NO3-明显增加的立地条件则可能会导致喜铵的“原优势针叶树种”更新困难。在温带退化森林生态系统恢复与重建过程中,顶极针叶树种对NH4 营养生境的固有适应性是必须充分考虑的问题。 相似文献

Although NH4
+ has generally been accepted as the preferred N source for fertilising rice, some workers have concluded tha NO3
- is as effective as NH4
+. The present glasshouse study exmined the relative uptake of NH4
+ and NO3
- from solution and cultures containing 5–120 mg N/L supplied as NH4NO3 by a hybrid rice (India) and a conventional rice cultivar (Japonica). At all levels of N supply, the hybrid rice had higher leaf area and higher rates of uptake of total N than the conventional cultivar. Net photosynthesis rates were similar for both cultivars at the highest rates of N supply, but were lower at 5–40 mg N/L for the hybrid cultivar than for the conventional cultivar. At all levels of N supply, the conventional rice cultivar absorbed more NH4
+ than NO3
-. In contrast, the hybrid rice absorbed more NH4
+ than NO3
- at the low levels of N supply (5–40 mg N/L), but more NO3
- than NH4
+ at the high levels of at 80 and 120 mg N/L. It is concluded that the uptake of N by rice is under genetic control and also dependent on levels of N supply. Thus the appropriate form of N fertiliser for rice may depend on cultivar and rates of N supply. 相似文献

Salinity represents an increasing environmental problem in managed ecosystems. Populus spp. is widely used for wood production by short-rotation forestry in fertilized plantations and can be grown on saline soil. Because N fertilization plays an important role in salt tolerance, we analysed Grey poplar (Populus tremula x alba, syn. Populus canescens) grown with either 1 mM nitrate or ammonium subjected to moderate 75 mM NaCl. The impact of N nutrition on amelioration of salt tolerance was analysed on different levels of N metabolism such as N uptake, assimilation and N (total N, proteins and amino compounds) accumulation. Na concentration increased in all tissues over time of salt exposure. The N nutrition-dependent effects of salt exposure were more intensive in roots than in leaves. Application of salt reduced root increment as well as stem height increase and, at the same time, increased the concentration of total amino compounds more intensively in roots of ammonium-fed plants. In leaves, salt treatment increased concentrations of total N more intensively in nitrate-fed plants and concentrations of amino compounds independently of N nutrition. The major changes in N metabolism of Grey poplar exposed to moderate salt concentrations were detected in the significant increase of amino acid concentrations. The present results indicate that N metabolism of Grey poplar exposed to salt performed better when the plants were fed with nitrate instead of ammonium as sole N source. Therefore, nitrate fertilization of poplar plantations grown on saline soil should be preferred. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine what patterns, if any, existed in the response of nitrifying enzyme activity (NEA), denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA), soil microbial N and soil inorganic N to elevated CO2 across a broad range of grassland environments. We studied the response of these N pools and microbial activities in four CO2‐enrichment sites of the MEGARICH project (Managing European Grasslands as a Sustainable Resource in a Changing Climate). CO2 treatment was studied in factorial combination with a cutting frequency treatment at two sites and with a temperature treatment at one site. Our study showed that microbial biomass N, NEA, DEA and extractable soil [NH4+] and [NO3?] were generally not affected by elevated CO2 in these grassland ecosystems after several years of treatment, nor by cutting frequency or temperature at the sites that included these treatments. Exceptions to this were that DEA and soil [NO3?] decreased by 22% and 45%, respectively, at the French site at elevated CO2. We discuss the possible explanations for this lack of response. 相似文献
