PMS was injected thrice weekly for four weeks into first winter and second winter canaries during the following periods: September-October, November-December, January-February and February-March. Measures were made of ovary and oviduct weight, brood-patch development (defeathering, vascularity and sensitivity changes), nest-building and egg-laying. PMS caused overy growth in all months: this was greatest in the second year birds in February. Both control and treated ovaries increased in size towards the breeding season. Oviduct growth depends mainly on the size of the treated ovary. Defeathering was produced by PMS in all months: its rate and extent increased towards the breeding season. Vascularity was also produced by PMS. It was least in November-December but after that the rate at which it appeared increased towards the breeding season. By contrast, the effect of PMS on brood-patch skin sensitivity was greater in the autumn group than subsequently. Nest-building occurred in September-October, but was then very slight until February-March, which is the beginning of the breeding season. Eggs were laid in most months; fewer injections were needed to produce egg-laying as the breeding season approached. 相似文献

Many songbirds learn their songs early in life from a song model. In the absence of such a model, they develop an improvised song that often lacks the species-typical song structure. Open-ended learners, such as the domesticated canary, are able to modify their songs in adulthood, although the mechanisms that guide and time the song-learning process are still not fully understood. In a previous study, we showed that male domesticated canaries lacking an adult song model in their first year substantially change their song repertoire and composition when exposed to normally reared conspecifics in their second year. Here, we investigate song development in descendants of canaries that were raised and kept as a peer group without a song model. Such males represent tutors with abnormal song characteristics. Interestingly, the F1 generation developed quite normal song structure, and when brought into an environment with normally raised canaries in their second year, they did not modify their songs substantially. These results suggest that contact with an adult song model early in life is crucial for song crystallization, but also that song development is at least partly guided by innate rules. Bird song is a model for studying neural control and lateralization of a learned behavior. Adult male canary develops large and varied song repertoires. Particular features of the male are well known to stimulate the reproductive activities of the female. We report here on the effect of lesions of either the left or right HVC, a key nucleus of the descending vocal control network of songbirds, on different song parameters of common domesticated male canaries of an European outbred strain. These canaries are useful to evaluate the question of central versus peripheral lateralization because they do not show syringeal dominance for syllable production compared to the previously studied canary strains. Right-sided lesions reduced the highest frequency and the widest frequency band. Left-sided lesion increased the lowest frequency. The size of the left-sided lesions correlated with the reduction of the repertoire of simple syllables, of the total repertoire and of the highest repetition rate, and with the increase of the lowest frequency. These results suggest a lateralized specialization of both left and right vocal pathways for particular features of the song, especially those that are known to elicit a great number of copulation solicitation displays (CSD). Lesions of both left and right pathways affected, however, sound amplitude of all syllables. Because this effect was more sever following left-sided lesions, and because the syrinx morphology of canaries has a left-right asymmetry, we suggest a peripheral mechanism for the observed lateralized specializations. 相似文献

The histology and development of the oviduct of unpaired female canaries during the natural breeding season were examined. The histology resembles that of the fowl. The tubular glands develop by invagination of the epithelial cells, and albumen granules subsequently form in their cytoplasm. The epithelium differentiates into ciliated columnar cells and goblet cells. The histology of the magnum is uniform along its length at all stages of development.
Oviduct development is closely correlated with that of the ovary. In its early stages there appears to be little correlation between oviduct development and that of the brood patch or of nest-building. The formation of albumen coincides with the enlargement of one ovarian follicle more than the rest, the completion of defeathering, and intensive nest-building behaviour. 相似文献

Day length control can effectively limit seed germination to favorable seasons, but this phenomenon has been studied in relatively few wild plants. I tested species from interior Alaska for day length control of germination under controlled conditions, and I also monitored germination phenology in natural habitats. Unstratified and cold-stratified seeds were germinated on short (13 h) and long (22 h) day length and in the dark at constant and alternating temperatures. On long day length, unstratified Ledum decumbens and Saxifraga tricuspidata seeds germinated from 5 C to 20 C, but on short day length few or no seeds germinated at 5 C and 10 C and germination was reduced at higher temperatures. Unstratified seeds of Diapensia lapponica and Chamaedaphne calyculata germinated only at 15 C and 20 C on long day length, and short day length completely inhibited germination. Cold stratification widened the temperature range for germination on both long and short day lengths, but germination was still lower on short than long day length. Germination phenology in natural habitats was consistent with germination in controlled conditions. In these species, short day length and low temperatures interact to inhibit germination in the fall. After overwintering, seeds germinate in the spring at low temperatures and on long day lengths. The inhibitory effect of short day length is not important in the spring because day length is already long at snowmelt. 相似文献

The effect of increased flow on movement and microhabitat use of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr in winter was investigated using radiotelemetry. To simulate hydropeaking operations, flow was increased four‐fold from 1·3 m3 s−1 to 5·2 m3 s−1 for 24 h periods. Flow did not affect fish habitat use or displacement and had little effect on fish activity within diel periods. During high flow periods in late winter, fish reduced night‐time activity. Stranding rates during flow reduction were also very low (only one fish). 相似文献

The challenge hypothesis predicts that plasma testosterone (T) concentration is high when male-male competitions are high and decreases when males are engaged in paternal care. In monogamous species, T concentration increases at the beginning of the breeding period and decreases after egg laying. According to the challenge hypothesis, increasing competition should also lead to T increase. The aim of our study was to test this hypothesis. In a first experiment, we measured the T profile of domesticated canaries housed with their mate in separated cages without competition. In a second one, we created a competition by housing male and female domestic canaries together (in an aviary) and emphasized this competition by limiting food access. We also studied social status effect. Our results showed no effect of social status in both sexes and no differences in female's T concentration. Concerning males, we obtained a clear monogamous T profile from the ones housed in a low competition situation and a polygamous profile from the others housed in high competition situation. Thus, our results support the hypothesis of the plasticity of the mechanisms controlling T concentration according to environmental conditions. 相似文献

The courtship solicitation display (CSD) of the female canary is a model to study estrogen dependent auditory preferences for male songs. The forebrain auditory-vocal nucleus, HVC, is part of the circuit that determines such preferences. To further develop this model we show that bilateral excitotoxic lesions of the medial part of HVC involving between 18-60% of the bilateral nucleus are behaviorally effective while complete unilateral lesions are not. Further, we show that animals recover their song preferences over a period of several months after the lesion. This functional recovery does not involve anatomical recovery of the HVC. Even 9 months after the lesion, the HVC size of these females was similar to that of females sacrificed 2 days after the lesion and thus was 40 +/- 8% smaller compared to normal females. Further, ipsilaterally, the lesion procedure transiently disturbed the neurochemistry, such as GAD-mRNA expression, in the part of HVC that did not undergo cell death. These results suggest that the integrity of the lateral part of at least one HVC is required to perform CSD in response to relevant auditory stimuli. 相似文献

We studied copulation solicitation display (CSD) responses to playback in photostimulated female canaries given systemic injections of progesterone. Eight females received injections of 0.1 mg of progesterone dissolved in olive oil during their first breeding cycle and were untreated during their second breeding cycle; eight females received only the oil vehicle during their first breeding cycle and received no treatment during their second breeding cycle. The injections were performed every second day during 15 days, after the onset of nest building. Progesterone treatment resulted in a significant increase of plasma progesterone which in turn provoked an inhibition of females' CSDs and decreased the size of the clutch. During the first breeding cycle, progesterone-treated females had lower CSDs and egg-laying scores than did control females. During the second breeding cycle, when females received no treatment, no differences emerged between the two groups. The suppressive effect of progesterone on female sexual responses was observed as soon as 48 h after the beginning of the treatment. We propose that progesterone plays a key role in mediating the transition from active female courtship behavior to sexual refractoriness in this species. Suppressive effects of progesterone on female sexual behavior have been previously described in lizards as well as in rodents. Our data are consistent with the hypothesis of Godwin et al. (J. Godwin, V. Hartman, M. Grammer, and D. Crews, Horm. Behav. 30, 138-144, 1996) which proposed that the decrease in sexual behavior following plasma progesterone increase represents an evolutionarily conserved mechanism in the regulation of female sexual behavior. 相似文献

Selection for domesticated behavior in female silver fox is accompanied by a number of changes in endocrine function of ovaries. Significant changes in peripheral blood estradiol and progesterone levels and their production by gonads during anestrous may be an endocrine basis for out-of-season activation of reproductive system and earlier beginning of seasonal reproduction in domesticated females. Divorce and remating in birds can be described as strategies used to enhance reproductive success. Mate switching often occurs because pairs failed to brood at least one chick during the previous breeding season. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of reproductive success on female preferences in domesticated canaries (Serinus canaria). For that purpose, females previously paired and having reared young were placed in a choice test situation: They were allowed to choose between their previous mate and a familiar male (a male neighbor during the breeding period). During these choice tests, females tended to stay near their previous mate longer than near a male neighbor when their reproductive success was “good” (at least two chicks). On the other hand, females with “poor” reproductive success (one chick) did not show a preference for their previous mate. Furthermore, in the present study, we observed that during choice tests males reacted to the presence of their previous mate in a particular way, by gathering nest material. This behavior was more scarcely observed in neighbor males which, on the contrary, sang significantly more than previous mates did. 相似文献

The use of hCG in cattle at breeding or at different times after breeding has been associated with extension in estrous cycle length among cows that do not become pregnant. The objective of this study was to determine whether the increase in estrous cycle length observed in hCG-treated cows that fail to become pregnant is due to changes in ovarian follicular dynamics. Twelve nonbred lactating cows were randomly assigned either to receive hCG on Day 7 of the cycle (Day 0 = day of estrus, n = 6) or to serve as controls (n = 6). Ultrasound scanning was conducted daily from Day 0 until the onset of the next ovulation to monitor follicular and corpus luteum (CL) dynamics. Blood samples were collected for progesterone analysis at each ultrasound session. Ovulation of the Day 7 follicle occurred in all 6 hCG-treated cows. The time of emergence of the second-wave of follicular growth was advanced in hCG-treated cows but was not statistically different (P > 0.05) from that of the control cows (10.8 +/- 0.3 vs 12.7 +/- 1.4 d). The mean diameter of the second-wave dominant follicle from Days 15 to 18 was not different (P > 0.05) between the treatment groups. However, the second-wave dominant follicle had a slower growth rate (0.8 vs 1.3 mm/d) among cows treated with hCG compared with that of the controls. The second-wave dominant follicle was the ovulatory follicle in 5 control cows, but only in 3 hCG-treated cows. The dominant follicle from the third wave ovulated in 1 control and in 3 hCG-treated cows. The lifespan of the spontaneous CL and the time to low progesterone levels (< 1 ng/ml) were not different between the control and hCG-treated cows. These results suggest an altered follicular dynamic but no extension in estrous cycle length when hCG is administered on Day 7 of the cycle in postpartum cows. 相似文献

Abstract: Nysius huttoni White is endemic to New Zealand and an important pest of wheat and brassica crops. To provide critical information for pest forecast, management and quarantine inspection, we investigated the effect of day length on the growth, development and reproductive diapause of this pest under a series of photoperiodic regimes: 16 : 8, 14 : 10, 12 : 12 and 10 : 14 h [light : dark (L : D)]. Long day lengths [16 : 8 and 14 : 10 h (L : D)] promote a continuous lifecycle while short day lengths [12 : 12 and 10 : 14 h (L : D)] slow up the growth and development, prolong the pre-mating period, and induce the reproductive diapause. The absence of oviposition for approximately 30 days is recognized as the criterion for N. huttoni reproductive diapause definition. When all life stages are kept under the short day length conditions, only 60–73% of females enter reproductive diapause; if the exposure to short day lengths starts in late instar nymphs, 100% of females enter reproductive diapause. If only adults experience short day lengths, does diapause incidence fall in between, with up to 26% of females laying a few eggs before entering diapause. The critical photoperiod for the induction of reproductive diapause falls between 13.3 : 10.7 and 13.5 : 10.5 h. 相似文献

以太湖秀丽白虾(Exopalaemon modestus)人工驯养子代为实验样本,实验共设置6个体质量梯度及7个温度梯度,样本体质量范围为(0.12±0.01)~(1.93±0.05)g,实验温度范围为12℃~30℃,研究了体质量及水温对耗氧率和排氨率的影响。结果表明:秀丽白虾耗氧率变幅为0.1497~0.9053mg·g-1·h-1,均值为0.3901mg·g-1·h-1;排氨率变幅为0.0165~0.0866mg·g-1·h-1,均值为0.0379mg·g-1·h-1。体质量、水温及两者的交互效应均对耗氧率和排氨率具有极显著的影响(P0.01)。体质量与耗氧率和排氨率之间的回归关系分别符合幂函数方程Ro=0.3114W-0.2414(r=-0.436)和Rn=0.0307W-0.3007(r=-0.653);水温与耗氧率和排氨率之间的回归关系分别符合指数方程Ro=0.0711e0.0749t(r=0.877)和Rn=0.0113e0.0530t(r=0.747);体质量、水温与耗氧率及排氨率的二元回归方程分别为Ro=0.028T-0.147W-0.053(r=0.948)和Rn=0.002T-0.017W+0.013(r=0.922)。耗氧率和排氨率Q10变幅分别为1.17~4.20和1.15~2.29,均值分别为2.10和1.64。在实验温度范围内,氧氮比均随着水温的上升而增大,变幅为7.42~13.62,均值为10.04。秀丽白虾在低温阶段(12℃~18℃)主要以蛋白质为供能物质,在高温阶段(21℃~30℃)对脂肪的利用有所增加,中等规格个体的脂肪代谢率最高。 相似文献

Songbirds have a specialized steroid-sensitive network of brain nuclei, the song system, for controlling song. Most nuclei of the song system express androgen receptors, and the sensory-motor integration nucleus High Vocal Center (HVC) alone also expresses estrogen receptors. Apart from expressing estrogen receptors in the vocal control system, songbirds are unique among birds because they have high concentrations of the estrogen-synthesizing enzyme aromatase in the neostriatum surrounding HVC. However, the role of estrogen in controlling the development of the song structure has been scarcely investigated. In this work, we show that blocking the production of estrogen during testosterone-induced song motor development in adult female canaries alters the song pattern compared to control females treated with testosterone only. These effects were correlated with inhibition of the expression of estrogen-sensitive genes, such as brain-derived nerve growth factor, in HVC. The expression of the ATP-synthase gene, an indicator of cell activity, in HVC, and the size of HVC, were not affected by the treatment. Our results provide the first example of estrogen-sensitive mechanisms controlling the structural features of adult birdsong. 相似文献
