Brain nuclei that control song are larger in male canaries, which sing, than in females, which sing rarely or not at all. Treatment of adult female canaries with testosterone (T) induces song production and causes song-control nuclei to grow, approaching the volumes observed in males. For example, the higher vocal center (HVC) of adult females approximately doubles in size by 1 month following the onset of T treatment. Male HVC projects to a second telencephalic nucleus, RA (the robust nucleus of the archistriatum), which projects in turn to the vocal motor neurons. Whether HVC makes a similar connection in female canaries is not known, although HVC and RA are not functionally connected in female zebra finches, a species in which testosterone does not induce neural or behavioral changes in the adult song system. This experiment investigated whether HVC makes an efferent projection to RA in normal adult female canaries, or if T is necessary to induce the growth of this connection. In addition, we examined whether T-induced changes in adult female canary brain are reversible. Adult female canaries received systemic T implants that were removed after 4 weeks; these birds were killed 4 weeks after T removal (Testosterone-Removal, T-R). Separate groups of control birds received either (a) T implants for 4 weeks which were not removed (Testosterone-Control, T-C) or (b) empty implants (Untreated Control, øO-C). Crystals of the fluorescent tracer DiI were placed in the song-control nucleus HVC in order to anterogradely label both efferent targets of HVC, RA and Area X. Projections from HVC to RA and Area X were present in all treatment groups including untreated controls, and did not appear to differ either qualitatively or quantitatively. Thus, formation of efferent connections from HVC may be prerequisite to hormone-induced expression of song behavior in adult songbirds. The volumes of RA and Area X were measured using the distribution of anterograde label as well as their appearance in Nissl-stained tissue. RA was larger in T-treated control birds than in untreated controls. Experimental birds in which T was given and then removed (T-R) had RA volumes closer in size to untreated controls (ø-C). Because the volume of RA in T-treated controls (T-C) was larger than that of birds that did not receive T (ø-C), we conclude that the volume of RA increased in both T-C and T-R birds but regressed upon removal of T in T-R birds. Surprisingly, the volume of Area X did not increase in T-treated birds. Birds in this study were maintained on short days, suggesting that T-induced growth of Area X reported previously may have resulted from an interaction between T and another seasonal or photoperiodic factor induced by exposure to long daylengths. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

PMS was injected thrice weekly for four weeks into first winter and second winter canaries during the following periods: September-October, November-December, January-February and February-March. Measures were made of ovary and oviduct weight, brood-patch development (defeathering, vascularity and sensitivity changes), nest-building and egg-laying. PMS caused overy growth in all months: this was greatest in the second year birds in February. Both control and treated ovaries increased in size towards the breeding season. Oviduct growth depends mainly on the size of the treated ovary. Defeathering was produced by PMS in all months: its rate and extent increased towards the breeding season. Vascularity was also produced by PMS. It was least in November-December but after that the rate at which it appeared increased towards the breeding season. By contrast, the effect of PMS on brood-patch skin sensitivity was greater in the autumn group than subsequently. Nest-building occurred in September-October, but was then very slight until February-March, which is the beginning of the breeding season. Eggs were laid in most months; fewer injections were needed to produce egg-laying as the breeding season approached.  相似文献

Although the gonadal photoperiodic response and its influence upon the song control system in canaries have been extensively studied, photoperiodic regulation of the GnRH system has not been investigated. To examine the relationship between photoperiod and the reproductive neuroendocrine system in male and female canaries, three groups of canaries were exposed to chronic short days (8L:16D; Phsens), acute long days (18L:6D; Phstim) and chronic long days (also 18L:6D; Phrefr) to induce the reproductive states of photosensitivity, photostimulation, and photorefractoriness, respectively. Brain sections were processed for GnRH immunocytochemistry. The canaries in this study did not demonstrate consistent or uniform responses to different photoperiodic treatments. In males, gonad size varied with photoperiod; Phstim males had larger gonads than either the Phsens or Phrefr males. In contrast, there was no difference between groups in female gonad size as a result of photoperiodic treatment. Brain GnRH cell number, cell size, and fiber density were similar in all groups. The results suggest that canaries are not as obligatory photoperiodic as previously thought (or at least not all varieties of domestic canaries are). This could be a result of many years of domestication, the natural history of the species, phylogenetic constraint, or a combination of these factors.  相似文献

Learned communication was a trait observed in a limited number of vertebrates such as humans but also songbirds (i.e., species in the suborder passeri sometimes called oscines). Robust male‐biased sex‐differences in song development and production have been observed in several songbird species. However, in some of these species treating adult females with testosterone (T) induced neuro‐behavioral changes such that females become more male‐like in brain and behavior. T‐treatment in these adult females seemed to stimulate sensorimotor song development to facilitate song masculinization. In male songbirds it was known that the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior nidopallium (LMAN) played a modulatory role during song development. LMAN was androgen sensitive and may be a key target of a T‐induced recapitulation of a developmental process in adult females. This hypothesis was tested. Adult female canaries were given either a chemical lesion of LMAN or a control sham‐surgery. Prior to surgery birds were individually housed for 2‐weeks in sound‐attenuated chambers to record baseline vocal behavior. Post‐surgery birds were given 1‐week to recover before subcutaneous implantation with silastic capsules filled with crystalline‐T. Birds remained on treatment for 3‐weeks (behavioral recordings continued throughout). Birds with a lesion to LMAN had less variability in their song compared with controls. The diversity of syllable and phrase type(s) was greater in sham controls as compared with birds with LMAN lesions. Birds did not differ in song rate. These data suggested that the sustention and conclusion of T‐induced sensorimotor song development in adult female canaries required an intact LMAN. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Treatment of adult female canaries with testosterone (T) causes them to produce male-typical vocalizations and results in striking growth of brain nuclei that control song behavior (Nottebohm, 1980). The song-control nucleus HVc (caudal nucleus of the ventral hyperstriatum) contains cells that concentrate testosterone or its metabolites, suggesting that steroid hormones may induce the growth of HVc directly by regulating the expression of specific genes in those HVc neurons that have steroid receptors. However, we have previously provided evidence that is inconsistent with the idea that steroids promote growth of HVc solely via a direct action on hormone receptors: testosterone treatment of deafened adult females results in very little growth of HVc, relative to T-treated hearing birds (Bottjer et al., 1986b). Thus, birds in the former group undergo very little overall growth of HVc despite high circulating levels of hormone. We show here that the slightly increased size of HVc in T-treated deaf birds is attributable to an increase in neuronal spacing; the greatly increased size of HVc in T-treated hearing birds is due to an increase in neuronal number as well as spacing. There was virtually no increase in number of HVc neurons in T-treated deafened birds relative to control groups, whereas T-treated hearing birds showed a marked increase in neuron number. The song-control nucleus RA (robust nucleus of the archistriatum), which receives direct afferent input from HVc, also increases in size in response to testosterone treatment. However, the volume of RA increases in both hearing and deafened birds; this increase is primarily due to an increase in neuronal spacing as well as a small increase in neuron number. These results demonstrate that the number of neurons in a specific vocal-control nucleus (HVc) can change dramatically in adult canaries and suggest that some synergistic action of hormonal and sensory stimulation is necessary to induce such a change.  相似文献

Early experience has been found to have long-term effects on behaviour such as social imprinting and song learning. In this paper we investigate whether early experience with particular types of food can lead to long-term feeding preferences in canaries. For 8 wk following the onset of independent foraging, two groups of naive fledgling canaries were reared on different diets. One group had a choice of four seed types, while individuals in the other group received only one type of seed. After this training period, all the birds were given a mixed seed diet for a further 15 wk, and then their preference for the original seeds was tested. All six birds that had been given four seeds during the training period showed the same preference, namely: hemp > niger > millet > linseed. However, all the birds that had been trained on one seed type only, still preferred the seed on which they had been trained. After a further 23 wk on a mixed-seed diet, birds from the restricted early diet group showed no further preference for the seed on which they were trained, and their seed choice at this stage was similar to the birds that had received four seeds. We conclude that early experience can affect food choice in canaries for at least 15 wk, but is subordinate to other influences in the longer term.  相似文献

Adult male House Sparrows, wild caught in December and January, were held on daily seven-hour artificial photoperiods for 14 days beginning in late February, with the aviary lights arranged to switch-on at 07.00 hrs. A control sample was then killed and the remaining birds divided into groups which received six hours of light daily (beginning at 07.00 hrs) plus one further hour of light given at variable times from the dawn. A further group received 16 hours of light given continuously (16L-8D). Pooled plasma samples from these groups were assayed for luteinizing hormone (using a radio-immunoassay technique) and the histological condition of all testes was examined. Although all subjects received the same total amount of photostimulation only those given schedules simulating long days responded with testicular growth and spermatogenesis. It is argued that this was because light can only be effective if received during relatively restricted phases of a circadian-based rhythm; only during these phases is the neuroendocrine apparatus sensitised to photostimulation. Increase in size of the testis tubules and meiotic divisions of primary spermatocytes, leading to secondary spermatocyte production and increase in testis weight, were considered to be indicators of FSH activity. Using these criteria a curve of FSH activity could be drawn and be compared with the quantitative curve for LH levels obtained from the plasma assays (a comparable assay technique for FSH is not yet available). Although LH levels remained approximately the same in all groups, and this correlated with the histological and histochemical evidence, FSH activity was more pronounced in those groups given light flashes at increased intervals after the beginning of the dark period. Thus LH activity occurred in the absence of spermatogenetic development in those groups given “short-day” schedules. Birds kept on a 16L-8D regime contained less plasma LH than anticipated and the possible existence of inhibitory mechanisms is discussed. It is feasible that when much FSH secretion begins LH production declines, but this explanation is speculative. The temporal pattern of LH production was markedly different in Greenfinches (for which the experimental results are described elsewhere) than in the House Sparrows, and the discussion considers the reasons for these differences in terms of the ecological and ethological adaptations of the two species.  相似文献

Courtship vocalizations of male songbirds can profoundly enhance the reproductive physiology and behavior of conspecific females. However, no study has fully investigated the selectivity of conspecific song effects on reproductive development in birds. We studied the effects of conspecific and heterospecific song on reproductive development in domesticated (canaries) and wild songbirds (song sparrows). As expected, conspecific song enhanced follicular development. Unexpectedly, however, birds exposed to heterospecific song also underwent enhanced follicular development (compared to birds exposed to no song); conspecific and heterospecific songs were equally effective in enhancing ovarian development. In canaries exposed to 18L:6D, conspecific song induced oviposition earlier and at a greater frequency than in heterospecific and no song groups, with the fewest eggs being laid in the no song group. These results indicate that conspecific and heterospecific male song can enhance reproductive activity in female songbirds. Whether or not activation of the reproductive axis in female songbirds by heterospecific song occurs in the wild remains unclear. It is also unclear as to whether the ability of the reproductive axis to respond to heterospecific song performs a specific function, or whether it is simply a consequence of greater selection pressure acting upon behavioral responses to song.  相似文献

We tested the auditory sensitivity of red-billed firefinches Lagonosticta senegal0061 and Spanish timbrado canaries Serinus canaria. Both these species produce songs and calls that are narrowband and relatively high in frequency, with spectral energy falling predominantly in the region of 3–6 kHz. Hearing thresholds were measured in these two species and compared to the auditory sensitivity of closely related species: the well studied zebra finch Taeniopygia guttata, and other strains of canary bred for song. Auditory thresholds were similar in both groups of birds, with firefinches having an audiogram typical for that of small birds. Timbrado canaries exhibited an audiogram with its greatest sensitivity in the relatively high region of 4–6 kHz, corresponding to the peak frequency of its calls. Critical ratios measured over a range of several octaves increased in a monotonie fashion at a rate of 2–3 dB per octave for both firefinches and timbrado canaries. Critical ratios in these two species are similar to what has been found in most other small passerine species, suggesting spectral resolving abilities similar to most small birds tested to date.  相似文献

In male songbirds, the song control pathway in the forebrain is responsible for song production and learning, and in females it is associated with the perception and discrimination of male song. However, experiments using the expression of immediate early genes (IEGs) reveal the activation of brain regions outside the song control system, in particular the caudomedial nidopallium (NCM) and the caudomedial mesopallium (CMM). In this study on female canaries, we investigate the role of these two regions in relation to playback of male songs of different quality. Male canaries produce elaborate songs and some contain syllables with a more complex structure (sexy syllables) that induce females to perform copulation solicitation displays (CSD) as an invitation to mate. Females were first exposed to playback of a range of songs of different quality, before they were finally tested with playback of songs containing either sexy or nonsexy syllables. We then sectioned the brains and used in situ hybridization to reveal brain regions that express the IEGs ZENK or Arc. In CMM, expression of ZENK mRNA was significantly higher in females that last heard sexy syllables compared to those that last heard nonsexy syllables, but this was not the case for NCM. Expression of Arc mRNA revealed no differences in either CMM or NCM in both experimental groups. These results provide evidence that in female canaries CMM is involved in female perception and discrimination of male song quality through a mechanism of memory reconsolidation. The results also have further implications for the evolution of complex songs by sexual selection and female choice.  相似文献

Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and grackles (Cassidix mexicanus) infected with muscle cysts of Sarcocystis were fed to opposums (Didelphis virginiana) and fecal sporocysts from the latter were given to sparrows (Passer domesticus, Family Ploceidae), canaries (Serinus canarius, Family Fringillidae) and ducks (Anas platyrhynchos, Family Anatidae). Asexual parasites were found in the endothelium of sparrows and canaries but not in ducks. When birds were kept 10 weeks or more after infection, muscle cysts were found grossly and microscopically in the majority of sparrows, and in 1 canary, but not in ducks. Muscle zoites were found in digests of all sparrows and canaries but not in that of ducks. Metrocytes and forms dividing by endodyogeny also were found in the digest. Thus, avian Sarcocystis was transmitted experimentally from 2 genera of 1 family (Icteridae) to 2 different families of passerine intermediate hosts by sporocysts from the definitive host. This is the broadest intermediate host spectrum known for a species of Sarcocystis.  相似文献

Adult male canaries learn to produce high-amplitude complex courtship songs each breeding season, whereas females do not, and brain nuclei involved with the production of song behavior are much larger in breeding males than in nonbreeding males or females (Nottebohm, 1980, 1981). However, treatment of adult females with testosterone (T) causes them to produce male-like song and stimulates pronounced growth of some song-control brain nuclei such as the caudal nucleus of the ventral hyperstriatum (HVc). We reexamined the effects of T on song-control nuclei in deafened birds. In order to examine whether the pattern of hormone accumulation varies as a function of circulating testosterone levels we described the distribution of testosterone-concentrating cells in HVc and the magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (MAN) in hearing adult male, female, and T-treated female canaries, as well as in deaf T-treated and untreated females. In contrast to our previous findings (Bottjer, Schoonmaker, and Arnold, 1986a), we observed no tendency in this study for testosterone-induced growth of HVc to be attenuated in deafened birds. There was no difference between deaf and hearing birds in the incidence of labeled cells within HVc. We also observed no sex or hormone-induced differences in the percentage of hormone-concentrating cells in HVc: normal females have approximately the same proportion of hormone target cells as do males and T-treated females. However, males normally have many more neurons in HVc than do control females, and systemic exposure to testosterone induces a pronounced increase in the number of HVc neurons of adult females. Therefore, the absolute number of hormone target cells in HVc is likely to be much greater in males and T-treated females than in normal females. As in HVc, there were no differences among groups in the proportion of labeled cells within lateral MAN (IMAN), a nucleus that has been implicated in song learning (Bottjer, Miesner and Arnold, 1984). In contrast, the incidence of hormone target cells in medial MAN (mMAN) did vary as a function of hormonal condition: although mMAN of normal females is rarely visible in Nissl-stained sections and cells in this region are not hormone labeled, mMAN is clearly visible in Nisslstained sections of males and T-treated females and contains many hormone-labeled cells. This testosterone-induced change in the phenotype of mMAN cells suggests a possible role for mMAN in learned song behavior.  相似文献

We tested the sexual responsiveness of female canaries, Serinus canaria, to two sets of different types of female conspecific songs versus an adult male conspecific song. Female songs were either spontaneously emitted (‘S-songs’) or were testosterone-induced (‘T-songs’). Copulation-solicitation displays (CSD) were used as an index of female sexual response. Playbacks were performed several days before and during egg laying, a period of natural sexual responsiveness of the females to song. We demonstrated that the weaker sexual displays of female canaries were recorded to S-songs, thus suggesting that these types of female songs do not contain fully functional sexual releasers. Three T-songs elicited high levels of sexual displays, thus demonstrating that testosterone treatment may induce sexual release quality in the female songs. Study of the phonology of these three T-songs strongly suggested that special song phrases may be good candidates as powerful sexual releasers. To test the sexual value of these female song phrases, we carried out a third experiment, using hybrid songs where each of these special T-song phrase types was included in a well-known heterospecific context. Two phrases elicited high levels of sexual responses in females. Essential features of the male full song, such as broadband rapid frequency modulations and high repetition rate, are retrieved in both female song phrases. Taken together, these data demonstrate that testosterone treatment not only induces a male-like structure in the songs of females, but also induces functionally ‘male-like’ songs. This result allows features of the vocal control network of testosterone-treated females to be compared with those of adult males singing full songs, to distinguish neural correlates of testosterone-dependent full songs. However, because testosterone does not induce functionally male-like songs in all the females, neuroanatomical structure-function correlations need detailed behavioural analysis.  相似文献

The natural testis cycle and associated changes in bill colour of the House Sparrow Passer domesticus are described. Subjects were wild-caught at three different times in the breeding cycles:in February when the testes were small and contained only spermatogonia, in May when they were fully recrudesced and contained bunches of spermatozoa and in late July at a time when spontaneous gonad regression was occurring as the birds entered their photo-refractory phase. Each sample was divided into eight separate groups which were given a range of artificial asymmetric skeleton photo-periods generalized as LD 6 +1/2:131/2; the 1/2-h light pulse was given at a different point in the dark period in each group. The birds entrained to skeleton schedules simulating complete photoperiods of up to 12 h duration as if the start of the long light pulse was dawn. However, with long-day simulations (e.g. 6L 111/2 D 1/2 L 6D which simulates an 18 h photoperiod) the birds entrained to the start of the short light pulse to give an effective photoperiod of 121/2 h (that is, 1/2L 6D 6L 111/2D). The skeleton schedules simulating 14 h and 16 h were interpreted as such in February and were not effective in causing testicular induction, but they were apparently read as days of 161/2 h and 141/2 h in May, and as such maintained active spermatogenesis. The differences are discussed in terms of the changed frequency of a circadian oscillator. When birds captured in July were held on the various skeleton light schedules refractoriness was ended for most the subjects, as was proved by subsequently exposing them to a complete 16-h photoperiod. Exceptions were the birds in the group given the 14-h simulation, for these entrained as they had in May and so were effectively receiving a long 161/2-h day. The discussion presents evidence to show that photoperiods in excess of 14 h cause the light sensitive phase of a circadian oscillator responsible for luteinizing hormone secretion to be phased into the non-inductive period of darkness. Rehabilitation of the interstitial components of the testis is apparently inhibited in such circumstances.  相似文献

Follicular growth and egg deposition were induced in the Grey Partridge (Perdix Perdix) after stimulation with Gn-RH and artificial light. The experiment was carried out from November to December 1983, during the short day period, and during the non egg laying period for this bird-sp. Two groups consisting of ten pairs of Grey Partridge each (female and male), received 3.8 mcg of Gn-RH (pGlu-His-Trp-Ser-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH2) every 8 hours for 10 and 15 days, respectively. With interruption of the Gn-RH treatment we observed follicular regression. For this reason the birds were stimulated with artificial light daily from the 15th day of treatment until egg deposition. Fifty-five days after the start of the Gn-RH treatment the Grey Partridge laid eggs. Forty days of this period the birds were supplemented with artificial light. Twenty pairs of Grey Partridge were used as controls. Periodically two experimental female subjects (treated and control) were sacrificed to observe the development of ovary and oviducts.  相似文献

Male songbirds such as canaries produce complex learned vocalizations that are used in the context of mate attraction and territory defense. Successful mate attraction or territorial defense requires that a bird be able to recognize individuals based on their vocal performance and identify these songs in a noisy background. In order to learn more about how birds are able to solve this problem, we investigated, with a two-alternative choice procedure, the ability of adult male canaries to discriminate between conspecific song segments from two different birds and to maintain this discrimination when conspecific songs are superimposed with a variety of distractors. The results indicate that male canaries have the ability to discriminate, with a high level of accuracy song segments produced by two different conspecific birds. Song discrimination was partially maintained when the stimuli were masked by auditory distractors, but the accuracy of the discrimination progressively declined as a function of the number of masking distractors. The type of distractor used in the experiments (other conspecific songs or different types of artificial white noise) did not markedly affect the rate of deterioration of the song discrimination. These data indicate that adult male canaries have the perceptual abilities to discriminate and selectively attend to one ongoing sound that occurs simultaneously with one or more other sounds. The administration of a noradrenergic neurotoxin did not impair markedly the discrimination learning abilities although the number of subjects tested was too small to allow any firm conclusion. In these conditions, however, the noradrenergic lesion significantly increased the number failures to respond in the discrimination learning task suggesting a role, in canaries, of the noradrenergic system in some attentional processes underlying song learning and processing.  相似文献

Male and female ring doves express a sexually dimorphic pattern of incubation. The dimorphism is temporal rather than motoric. The male incubates for a block of time in the middle of the day and the female incubates the rest of the time. The present study explored the role of gonadal hormones in the control of the temporal dimorphism. Female-female pairs incubated their eggs, but it could not be predicted which of the partners would be sitting on the nest at any given time. Male-male pairs did not incubate and instead destroyed the nests that were provided and displayed aggressive behavior. Some intact males incubated when paired with gonadectomized males, although the castrates tended to ignore the nest. In contrast, when castrated birds were given heterotypical hormonal replacement therapy, they and their same-sex partners incubated the eggs that had been provided, with the gonadectomized birds sitting at a time appropriate to the hormonal state. Chronic aminonucleoside nephrosis in rats is an experimental analogue of human focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. This study was undertaken to define the effects of chronic nephrosis on the pituitary-ovarian axis and on fertility. Chronic nephrosis was induced by puromycin aminonucleoside and followed for 112 days. The estrous cycle was evaluated daily in all rats, whereas biochemical parameters, hormonal concentrations, and fertility were measured on Days 7, 14, 28, 56, 84, and 112 (n = 8). Animals were divided in four experimental groups: A, B, C, and D. Group A was used to determine LH, FSH, progesterone, and estradiol concentrations. Group B was used to evaluate fertility, and groups C and D were added to clarify the role of male rats in the fertility of nephrotic female rats. The results showed a persistent proteinuria in nephrotic rats; the estrous cycle of nephrotic animals was disrupted. The LH and estradiol concentrations were significantly low at all time points evaluated, whereas no significant changes were noted in FSH or progesterone values. In addition, fertility and litter size were diminished in nephrotic female rats. Interestingly, the presence of a male rat or its urine resulted in a positive influence on serum estradiol concentrations of nephrotic female rats. These data indicate that experimental chronic nephrosis results in a pituitary-ovarian dysfunction that is characterized by low LH concentration, hypoestrogenism, failure of the hormonal feedback control, and diminution of fertility. In addition, they show the positive effect of a male rat on the fertility of a nephrotic female, which strongly suggests the participation of pheromones.  相似文献

In many songbirds, females occasionally sing in contexts of high female-female competition. Testosterone may be involved in the activation of song, because testosterone implants elicit female song in many species with rare female song. A possible mechanism for the hormonal control of female song is provided by the challenge hypothesis, which predicts a rise in testosterone in response to aggressive interactions during socially unstable situations. We tested this by comparing faecal testosterone levels in polygynandrous and monogamous female dunnocks. In groups with two to three females (polygynandry and polygyny) males provide less help at each nest than in groups with a single female (monogamy and polyandry). Polygynandrous and polygynous females are aggressive towards one another and attempt to expel rivals. Polygynandrous females had significantly higher testosterone levels than monogamous females. Competition between females that was induced by removal of males caused testosterone levels to rise. Further, female testosterone levels were correlated with the rate of 'tseep' calls, which are produced during aggressive encounters between females. Finally, polygynandrous and polygynous females sang significantly more than monogamous females. To the best of our knowledge, these results provide the first experimental support for the challenge hypothesis in female birds, and suggest that testosterone can regulate facultative female song in songbirds.  相似文献
