We usually perceive a stationary, stable world and we are able to correctly estimate the direction of heading from optic flow despite coherent visual motion induced by eye movements. This astonishing example of perceptual invariance results from a comparison of visual information with internal reference signals predicting the visual consequences of an eye movement. Here we demonstrate that the reference signal predicting the consequences of smooth-pursuit eye movements is continuously calibrated on the basis of direction-selective interactions between the pursuit motor command and the rotational flow induced by the eye movement, thereby minimizing imperfections of the reference signal and guaranteeing an ecologically optimal interpretation of visual motion.  相似文献

During steady fixation, observers make small fixational saccades at a rate of around 1–2 per second. Presentation of a visual stimulus triggers a biphasic modulation in fixational saccade rate—an initial inhibition followed by a period of elevated rate and a subsequent return to baseline. Here we show that, during passive viewing, this rate signature is highly sensitive to small changes in stimulus contrast. By training a linear support vector machine to classify trials in which a stimulus is either present or absent, we directly compared the contrast sensitivity of fixational eye movements with individuals'' psychophysical judgements. Classification accuracy closely matched psychophysical performance, and predicted individuals'' threshold estimates with less bias and overall error than those obtained using specific features of the signature. Performance of the classifier was robust to changes in the training set (novel subjects and/or contrasts) and good prediction accuracy was obtained with a practicable number of trials. Our results indicate a tight coupling between the sensitivity of visual perceptual judgements and fixational eye control mechanisms. This raises the possibility that fixational saccades could provide a novel and objective means of estimating visual contrast sensitivity without the need for observers to make any explicit judgement.  相似文献

Rapid eyemovements during rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep are associated withrapid, shallow breathing. We wanted to know whether thiseffect persisted during increased respiratory drive byCO2. In eight healthy subjects, werecorded electroencephalographic, electrooculographic, andelectromyographic signals, ventilation, and end-tidalPCO2 during the night. InspiratoryPCO2 was changed to increaseend-tidal PCO2 by 3 and 6 Torr. During normocapnia, rapid eye movements were associated with a decreasein total breath time by 0.71 ± 0.19 (SE) s(P < 0.05) because of shortenedexpiratory time (0.52 ± 0.08 s,P < 0.001) and with a reduced tidalvolume (89 ± 27 ml, P < 0.05) because of decreased rib cage contribution (75 ± 18 ml, P < 0.05). Abdominal (11 ± 16 ml, P = 0.52) and minuteventilation (0.09 ± 0.21 ml/min, P = 0.66) did not change. Inhypercapnia, however, rapid eye movements were associated with afurther shortening of total breath time. Abdominal breathing was alsoinhibited (79 ± 23 ml, P < 0.05), leading to a stronger inhibition of tidal volume and minuteventilation (1.84 ± 0.54 l/min,P < 0.05). We conclude thatREM-associated respiratory changes are even more pronounced duringhypercapnia because of additional inhibition of abdominal breathing. This may contribute to the reduction of the hypercapnic ventilatory response during REM sleep.

When judging the lightness of objects, the visual system has to take into account many factors such as shading, scene geometry, occlusions or transparency. The problem then is to estimate global lightness based on a number of local samples that differ in luminance. Here, we show that eye fixations play a prominent role in this selection process. We explored a special case of transparency for which the visual system separates surface reflectance from interfering conditions to generate a layered image representation. Eye movements were recorded while the observers matched the lightness of the layered stimulus. We found that observers did focus their fixations on the target layer, and this sampling strategy affected their lightness perception. The effect of image segmentation on perceived lightness was highly correlated with the fixation strategy and was strongly affected when we manipulated it using a gaze-contingent display. Finally, we disrupted the segmentation process showing that it causally drives the selection strategy. Selection through eye fixations can so serve as a simple heuristic to estimate the target reflectance.  相似文献

Self-motion disturbs the stability of retinal images by inducing optic flow. Objects of interest need to be fixated or tracked, yet these eye movements can infringe on the experienced retinal flow that is important for visual navigation. Separating the components of optic flow caused by an eye movement from those due to self-motion, as well as using optic flow for visual navigation while simultaneously maintaining visual acuity on near targets, represent key challenges for the visual system. Here we summarize recent advances in our understanding of how the visuomotor and vestibulomotor systems function and interact, given the complex task of compensating for instabilities of retinal images, which typically vary as a function of retinal location and differ for each eye.  相似文献

The process of selection of target points during voluntary eye movements when polygonal random shapes are observed was analysed in humans by means of an eye movement recording technique. A computer model was constructed with the aim to explain the empirical results. It has been found that the majority of fixation points were located at the angles. The marginal distribution over the x-axis of the individual angles depends on the angle's size: the maximal value of distribution was found for acute angles more distant from the vertex than in obtuse ones. The distribution of output activity of the ganglion cells in a computer model, reproducing some basic features of the retina, is in good agreement with the empirical results.  相似文献

The properties of extraocular muscle are important in consideration of the control of human eye movements. A proposed model for human extraocular muscle is based on the anatomical and physiological evidence; it considers both the static and dynamic properties of active and passive muscle. The passive parallel elasticity was determined from the length-tension curves for passive muscle, while the active series elasticity was defined utilizing quick stretch results for active muscle. The characteristics of active muscle as the tension generator were computed from length-tension data; the force-velocity relationship was used to describe the viscosity of active muscle. Simulations using the muscle model accurately depicted the quick stretch experiments of both active and passive muscle as well as the isometric development of muscle force to a state of tentanus. The model will be incorporated into an overall representation of the extraocular plant mechanism in the immediately suceeding paper.  相似文献

We studied the effects of saccadic eye movements on visual signaling in the primate lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), the earliest stage of central visual processing. Visual responses were probed with spatially uniform flickering stimuli, so that retinal processing was uninfluenced by eye movements. Nonetheless, saccades had diverse effects, altering not only response strength but also the temporal and chromatic properties of the receptive field. Of these changes, the most prominent was a biphasic modulation of response strength, weak suppression followed by strong enhancement. Saccadic modulation was widespread, and affected both of the major processing streams in the LGN. Our results demonstrate that during natural viewing, thalamic response properties can vary dramatically, even over the course of a single fixation.  相似文献

This study analyzed the characteristics of pursuit and assessed the influence of prior and visual information on eye velocity and saccades in amblyopic and control children, in comparison to adults. Eye movements of 41 children (21 amblyopes and 20 controls) were compared to eye movements of 55 adults (18 amblyopes and 37 controls). Participants were asked to pursue a target moving at a constant velocity. The target was either a ‘standard’ target, with a uniform color intensity, or a ‘noisy’ target, with blurry edges, to mimic the blurriness of an amblyopic eye. Analysis of pursuit patterns showed that the onset was delayed, and the gain was decreased in control children with a noisy target in comparison to amblyopic or control children with a standard target. Furthermore, a significant effect of prior and visual information on pursuit velocity and saccades was found across all participants. Moreover, the modulation of the effect of visual information on the pursuit velocity by group, that is amblyopes or controls with a standard target, and controls with a noisy target, was more limited in children. In other words, the effect of visual information was higher in control adults with a standard target compared to control children with the same target. However, in the case of a blurry target, either in control participants with a noisy target or in amblyopic participants with a standard target, the effect of visual information was larger in children.

Humans can distinguish visual stimuli that differ by features the size of only a few photoreceptors. This is possible despite the incessant image motion due to fixational eye movements, which can be many times larger than the features to be distinguished. To perform well, the brain must identify the retinal firing patterns induced by the stimulus while discounting similar patterns caused by spontaneous retinal activity. This is a challenge since the trajectory of the eye movements, and consequently, the stimulus position, are unknown. We derive a decision rule for using retinal spike trains to discriminate between two stimuli, given that their retinal image moves with an unknown random walk trajectory. This algorithm dynamically estimates the probability of the stimulus at different retinal locations, and uses this to modulate the influence of retinal spikes acquired later. Applied to a simple orientation-discrimination task, the algorithm performance is consistent with human acuity, whereas naive strategies that neglect eye movements perform much worse. We then show how a simple, biologically plausible neural network could implement this algorithm using a local, activity-dependent gain and lateral interactions approximately matched to the statistics of eye movements. Finally, we discuss evidence that such a network could be operating in the primary visual cortex.  相似文献

Attention is drawn to the fact that under normal visual conditions the sensitivity of the receptor units of the visual system are subject to spatial and temporal variations, and that consequently in performing pattern recognition the visual cortex has to discriminate between external luminance structure and internal sensitivity structure. It is suggested that eye movements are the method by which this discrimination is performed. In a simplified model analysis it is shown that eye movements are a suitable mechanism for this discrimination. Implications of this model for detection threshold and stabilized retinal images are discussed. A new interpretation of the adaptation to sine wave grids is given.  相似文献

Some 30 years ago, Trevarthen [1] introduced the idea of two separate visual systems, a focal system for fine motor acts and an ambient system for gross body movements such as ambulation. More recent developments indicating anatomically and physiologically separate pathways in primate vision [2] have led to a different idea of separate visual systems, one for conscious perception and one for action [3]. It has received empirical support from several studies showing that pointing, reaching, and grasping can remain accurate while the perceived position or size of objects is subject to illusory distortion [4-6]. However, much of this evidence has been challenged on the grounds of methodological flaws, particularly failure to match perfectly the conditions for verbal and motor tasks and failure to replicate results [7-10]. Here we take advantage of the strong compression of perceived position that occurs around the time of saccadic eye movements [11, 12]. Under normal lighting conditions, stimuli flashed briefly over a wide range of spatial positions just before saccadic onset are neither seen nor reached for in their veridical positions, but are compressed toward the saccadic target. We validate the idea of separate systems by showing that, in the dark, subjects are able to point accurately to the correct target position, even though their verbal reports are still subject to compression.  相似文献

The structure of isolated rat liver mitochondria has been observed in the electron microscope following incubation of the mitochondria in vitro under a variety of conditions. The results show that ultrastructural changes are only associated with the energization and deenergization of isolated mitochondria if the composition of the incubation medium permits ion movements in or out of the matrix. The mechanism of energy coupling does not appear to depend on these major mitochondrial structural changes. The addition of low levels of valinomycin greatly increases the rate at which the matrix compartment swells and shrinks on energization and deenergization even at low K+ concentrations.  相似文献
