This study investigated the sources of organic matter and sediment depositional environment within fluviatile sediments of the Ganges–Meghna (GM) delta plains. The very low contents of trace metals e.g., chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), scandium (Sc), and vanadium (V), organic carbon content, and cerium (Ce)-anomaly data of sediments indicate the redox conditions that fall within the boundary of oxic–anoxic condition, with dominantly oxic conditions in the sediment deposition environment. The higher atomic carbon nitrogen (C/N)a ratios and depleted stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) values for sediments from three study areas indicated the terrestrial sources of organic matter derived from C3 plant materials, whereas the contribution of organic materials from C4 vegetation and riverine productivity is low. Some silty sand samples exhibited lower (C/N)a ratios and enriched δ13C values in Sonargaon and Faridpur areas that are attributed to the adsorption of ammonium ions on clay minerals and the contribution of organic matter from C4 plants. Total sulfur over total organic carbon (TS/TOC) ratios in sediments of the Ganges delta reflect the nonmarine environments of sediment deposition. The lower ratios of syringyl to vanillyl phenols (S/V), cinnamyl to vanillyl phenols (C/V), and acid to aldehyde in vanillyl phenols (Ad/Al)v observed in Daudkandi indicate that the lignin in sediments derived from dominant woody gymnosperm sources and is very highly degraded. By contrast, the S/V ratio, C/V ratios, and [Ad/Al]v ratios in Faridpur suggest that the lignin in sediments derived from a mixture of woody and nonwoody angiosperm plant tissue contribution that underwent high degradation as well.  相似文献

Investigations on large canalised rivers, for example the Danube, have shown that transported particulate matter, which is typically inorganic, is predominantly deposited in waters near the river’s main channel. This investigation deals with the lower section of the River Havel (NE Germany), a canalised lowland river with a very flat floodplain. This river is highly polluted by nutrients from urban areas (Berlin) and a long chain of river lakes produces high concentrations of phytoplankton. Due to the high proportion of planktogenic detritus, it was hypothesised that greater quantities of nutrient-rich fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) would be deposited in floodplain waters located further from the main channel than has been reported for large rivers. The total nutrient, P-binding metal (Fe, Al, and Mn), organic and inorganic carbon (TOC, TIC) contents of the upper organic sediment layer (0–4 cm) were analysed in samples collected from 48 floodplain water and river sites. The sediment bulk density, calculated on the basis of dry mass content and loss on ignition, was used to characterise the waters according to the impact of the river current. The results showed that the variability of total phosphorus (TP) was best explained by the variability of total iron (TFe, R2 = 0.52). The floodplain water sediments could clearly be separated into two groups on the basis of the sediment particle size composition, and of the element ratios TOC:TP, TN:TP, primarily TFe:TP. The sediments from impounded river sections and from mouth sections of backwaters (approx. 100–200 m) were characterised by a high proportion particles from the 0.1 to 0.5 mm size fraction and by homogeneous, low TFe:TP, TOC:TP and TN:TP ratios. Sediments from distal sections of backwaters and of oxbow lakes tended to exhibit high element ratios with much higher variability. These results were interpreted as a spatially limited impact of the river on the floodplain water sediments. Contrary to expectation, the phosphorus bound in river seston was predominantly and very homogeneously deposited in the impounded river and mouth sections of backwaters. This implies that the inundation of the floodplain waters during spring floods seems to have no important material impact on the sediments in waters of low hydrological connectivity with the River Havel.

The dynamics of carbon and nitrogen in carbonate mud were examined in the lagoons of Arlington and Sudbury Reefs, Great Barrier Reef. Most (89–93%) of the organic carbon and total nitrogen depositing to the carbonate mud zones was mineralized over a sediment depth of 1 m, with ∼50% of CO2 produced during microbial decomposition involved in carbonate precipitation/dissolution reactions. There was proportionally little burial of organic carbon (10–11%) or nitrogen (7–10%). Nitrogen budgets suggest rapid turnover of porewater inorganic N pools on the order of hours to a few days. Incubation experiments indicate carbonate dissolution in surface deposits (≤20 cm depth) and carbonate precipitation in deeper sediments. Depth-integrated reaction rates indicate net carbonate precipitation of 7–10 mol CaCO3 m2 year−1 over a depth of 1 m. Budget calculations at the whole-reef scale imply that deposition of CaCO3 in the mud zones of both lagoons may equate to 50–90% of total reef carbonate production, with organic carbon fluxes equating to nearly all net primary production on each reef. These biogeochemical estimates point to the functional importance of carbonate mud zones in the lagoons of the shelf reefs of the Great Barrier Reef.  相似文献

Sediment organic matter (OM) and its stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes were studied in 12 Slovenian mountain lakes in the Julian Alps. The lakes have different catchment areas and display a range of trophic states. Surface sediment atomic C/N ratios ranged from 8.4 to 13.2. Based on these C/N ratios, we concluded that autochthonous OM dominates in these lakes and constitutes approximately 65–92% of the total OM. Higher contributions of autochthonous OM sources were observed in lakes above the tree line. Relatively constant C/N ratios in the deeper sediments suggest that degradation processes are most intense in the upper few centimetres of the sediments and/or that remaining OM is relatively resistant to further degradation. Surface sediment δ13C and δ15N values ranged from −36.1 to −14.1‰ and from −5.2 to +1.1‰, respectively. In sediment cores from seven lakes, higher δ13C and lower δ15N values characterize oligotrophic lakes situated above the tree line, whereas the reverse is true for eutrophic lakes below the tree line that are also exposed to more anthropogenic impact. Carbon and nitrogen biogeochemical cycling differs considerably among the lakes. Stratigraphic shifts in carbon, total nitrogen, C/N ratios and stable C and N isotopes in cores record changes in inputs, and hence water column processes, as well as alterations in loading to the lakes. The stratigraphic variations are also the result of post-depositional diagenetic changes in the upper few centimetres of sediment. All the lakes show impacts from recent increases in atmospheric deposition of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Application of sediment OM analysis thus proved to be useful to reconstruct paleoecological changes in sensitive mountain lake ecosystems that are either natural and/or anthropogenically derived.  相似文献

Food is a limiting factor for the deposit feeders. The availability of sediment nutrients thus has a tight relationship with the growth, survival and development of the animal. There are two purposes of this study: (1) to determine if the ingestion and growth rates can be used as a bioassay approach to assess the sediment nutrients; and (2) use the combination of bioassay approaches and chemical analyses to determine which chemical parameter is the better predicator of the sediment nutrients to the animals. In the preliminary study, the optimal growth length and average ingestion rate of Capitella sp. I were obtained from the laboratory. The standardized relationships of the growth and ingestion rates in response to different nutrients were prepared. Then, the sediments collected from different coastal wetlands in Western Taiwan were used in the feeding, growth experiments and chemical analyses. The comparisons were made between the field and laboratory experiments to determine the sediment nutrients in the wetland of Taiwan. In the growth rate standardized relationship, Capitella sp. I increased its growth rate with the total organic nitrogen (TON) concentration between 0 to 2.8 mgN·g sediment−1, total organic carbon (TOC) concentration between 0 and 22.4 mgC·g sediment−1, and enzymatically hydrolyzable amino acid (EHAA) concentration between 0 and 4.48 mg protein·g sediment−1. After the nutrient concentrations exceed these values, the growth rates decreased gradually. In the ingestion rate standardized relationship, the animal increased its ingestion rate with the total organic nitrogen (TON) concentration between 0 and 2 mgN·g sediment−1, total organic carbon (TOC) concentration between 0 and 14.1 mgC·g sediment−1, and EHAA concentration between 0 and 3.2 mg protein·g sediment−1. After the nutrient concentrations exceed these values, the ingestion rates also decreased. To determine which nutrient parameter is the best predictor for the sediment nutrient in the field, we first analyzed whether the data obtained from the laboratory fell within 99% confidence interval of the regression obtained from the field data. Then, to determine which parameter had the shortest perpendicular distance between the field and the laboratory regression curves. Both the growth and ingestion rates comparisons showed that the EHAA is the best candidate of the sediment nutrient of deposit feeders in the field. The results of this study proved tentatively that the growth and ingestion rates of Capitella sp. I can be used as the bioassay approaches to estimate the sediment nutrients. The combination of the bioassay approaches and the relevant chemical analyses allows us to determine the bioavailability fraction of sediment to the deposit feeders.  相似文献

Concentrations of sediment organic nitrogen, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (ammonium, nitrite and nitrate), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in sediments were measured at two sites in a eutrophic estuarine lagoon. One is a shallow aerobic site where macrobenthos are abundant and the other is a deep anaerobic site devoid of macrobenthos. Four species of macrobenthos (Bivalvia: Corbicula japonica, Annelida: Notomastus sp., Neanthes japonica and Oligochaeta sp.) were found in 8 sandy sediment cores collected at a shallow site in three succcessive summers. DON (170–1500 μg atom N l-1) was the major constituent of dissolved nitrogen with 10 times greater concentration than ammonium (55–180 μg atom N l-1) and 1000 times greater than nitrate (0.14–5.9 μg atom N l-1) and nitrite (0.21–1.4 μg atom N l-1). The ammonium content in anaerobic muddy sediments at the deep site (210–350 μg atom N l-1) was higher than in aerobic sandy sediments, whereas DON was higher in aerobic sediments than anaerobic sediments (90–240 μg atom N l-1). In aerobic sediments, depth profiles of DIN were nearly constant whereas DON was mostly highest at the surface. On the other hand, the increase of DON and ammonium was observed where macrobenthos was found. The occurrence of macrobenthos and high content of DON and ammonium content in the layers of sediment may suggest the influence of macrobenthos in the partitioning of nitrogen species through their motion and excretion. Dimensionless ammonium adsorption coefficients (K) were determined for tropical mangrove forest sediments and temperate Wadden Sea sediments. The K values were obtained from ammonium adsorption isotherms of KCl (2 M) extractable ammonium versus dissolved ammonium in the porewater; relationships that can be described by a linear model. Linearity was evident even at low porewater concentrations for mangrove sediment, according to isotherms based on KCl extractions on untreated sediment profiles. K-values were low in mangrove forest sediments (0.04–0.10), and higher in Wadden Sea sediments (0.17–1.12). The vertical range in K-values was larger at the vegetated sites, with highest values in subsurface sediments, which suggests differences in quantity and quality of the fine organic and inorganic fractions. The low ammonium adsorption in the mangrove sediments can be explained by a higher concentration of competitive cations, especially iron, in this iron-rich environment. The low adsorption of ammonium in mangrove sediments and vegetated surface sediment of the Wadden Sea was negatively related to the organic content of the sediments, which is in contrast to findings for other marine sediments. We suggest that organic material may have a diluting effect on the exchange capacity in fine-grained sediments, and that organic coatings may block ion exchange sites on clay surfaces. Thus, there may be a organic-rich ‘wetland’ versus organic-poor ‘sediment’ effect. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Distinct horizontal water column concentration gradients of nutrients and chlorophyll a (Chl a) occur within large, shallow, eutrophic Lake Taihu, China. Concentrations are high in the north, where some of the major polluted tributaries enter the lake, and relatively low in the south, where macrophytes generally are abundant. It is not clear, however, whether these water column concentration gradients are similarly reflected in spatial heterogeneity of nutrient concentrations within the bottom sediments. The main objective of this study was therefore to test if horizontal and vertical variations in the phosphorus and nitrogen content in bottom sediments of Lake Taihu are significantly related to (1) horizontal variations in overlying water column nutrient concentrations and (2) other sediment geochemical constituents. We measured the concentration of total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) in surficial sediments (0–2 cm) and TP, TN and Chl a concentrations in water column samples, collected from 32 sites in 2005. In 2006 sediment, TP, TN, carbon, iron and manganese concentrations were measured vertically at 2 cm intervals, extending to a depth of approximately 20 cm, at an additional eight sites. Linear correlation analysis revealed that surficial sediment TP concentrations across the 32 stations were related significantly, though weakly, to annual mean water column concentrations of TP, TN as well as Chl a. Correlations of surficial sediment TN with water column variables were, however, not significant (P > 0.05). Amongst the geochemical variables tested, the vertical variability of sediment TP concentrations was most strongly related to sediment manganese and carbon concentrations. A multiple stepwise linear regression revealed that the combination of sediment manganese and carbon concentrations explained 91% of the horizontal variability in sediment TP concentrations and 65% of the vertical variability. Exposure of coral reefs to river plumes carrying increasing loads of nutrients and sediments is a pressing issue for coral reefs around the world including the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of changes in inorganic nutrients (nitrate, ammonium and phosphate), salinity and various types of suspended sediments in isolation and in combination on rates of fertilisation and early embryonic development of the scleractinian coral Acropora millepora. Dose–response experiments showed that fertilisation declined significantly with increasing sediments and decreasing salinity, while inorganic nutrients at up to 20 μM nitrate or ammonium and 4 μM phosphate had no significant effect on fertilisation. Suspended sediments of ≥100 mg l−1 and salinity of 30 ppt reduced fertilisation by >50%. Developmental abnormality occurred in 100% of embryos at 30 ppt salinity, and no fertilisation occurred at ≤28 ppt. Another experiment tested interactions between sediment, salinity and nutrients and showed that fertilisation was significantly reduced when nutrients and low concentrations of sediments co-occurred, although both on their own had no effect on fertilisation rates. Similarly, while slightly reduced salinity on its own had no effect, fertilisation was reduced when it coincided with elevated levels of sediments or nutrients. Both these interactions were synergistic. A third experiment showed that sediments with different geophysical and nutrient properties had differential effects on fertilisation, possibly related to sediment and nutrient properties. The findings highlight the complex nature of the effects of changing water quality on coral health, particularly stressing the significance of water quality during coral spawning time. The Salton Sea is the largest lake, on a surface area basis, in California (939 km2). Although saline (>44 g/l) and shallow (mean depth approximately 9.7 m), it provides valuable habitat for a number of endangered species. The distribution of sediments and their properties within the Salton Sea are thought to have significant influence on benthic ecology and water quality. Sediment properties and their distribution were quantified and compared with predicted distributions using several sediment distribution models. Sediment samples (n = 90) were collected using a regular staggered-start sampling grid and analyzed for water content, organic carbon (C), calcium carbonate, total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P), organic phosphorus, and other properties. Water content, total N, and total and organic P concentrations were all highly correlated with organic C content. The organic C concentration showed a non-linear increase with depth, with low organic C contents (typically 1–2%) present in sediments found in depths up to 9 m, followed by a strong increase in organic C at greater depths (to about 12% at 15 m depth). The models of Hakanson, Rowan et al., Blais and Kalff, and Carper and Bachmann yielded very different predicted critical depths for accumulation (10.5–22.8 m) and areas of accumulation (0–49.5%). Hakanson’s dynamic ratio model more reasonably reproduced the observed zone of elevated organic C concentrations in the Salton Sea than either exposure- or slope-based equations. Wave theory calculations suggest that strong winds occurring less than 1% of the time are sufficient to minimize accumulation of organic matter in sediments that lie at depths less than 9 m in this system. Wetlands provide a large pool of organic matter and nutrients, and are important for maintaining material cycle balances in terrestrial ecosystems, and also help retard climate change. Land use changes in wetlands have greatly disturbed the natural evolution of wetland ecosystems. Wetland drainage and reclamation alters the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the wetland, thus significantly disturbing the material cycles, leading to significant changes in the biogeochemical processes of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the wetland. The wetlands in the Sanjiang Plain are the largest area of fresh wetlands in China. However, the area has experienced major land uses changes since the 1950s; areas of the wetland have been drained and converted to arable land. Some studies have been conducted into the effects of land use change on material cycles in the Sanjiang Plain wetlands but few reports have discussed the C/N and C/P ratios and pH values as indicators of wetland degradation due to land use changes. We selected eight land uses: humus marsh (HM), marshy meadow (MM), drained humus marsh (DHM), drained marshy meadow (DMM), tillage land (TL), abandoned land (AL), natural secondary forest (NSF) and artificial forest (AF), in the Honghe area of the Sanjiang Plain. We studied changes in the total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), C/N and C/P ratios and pH values in topsoil (0–20 cm) of these eight different land uses. The possible mechanisms underlying the changes, and the significance of the C/N and C/P ratios as indicators of soil quality were also discussed. In the natural wetland, the TOC, TN and TP concentrations in the soil were high, with values of 203.5 g/kg, 20.2 g/kg and 1.44 g/kg, respectively, in HM; and 59.2 g/kg, 5.28 g/kg and 0.83 g/kg, respectively, in MM. Drainage of the HM has led to decreases in the TOC, TN and TP concentrations of about 50%. Significant decreases were also observed in TOC, TN and TP for NSF and AF compared to HM. Drained MM led to decreases in the TOC and TN of about 45%, but had little effect on TP. Marshy meadow that had been drained for more than 10 years experienced an exponential decline in TOC, TN and TP, with decreases of more than 60% for TOC and TN, and 20% for TP. However, after being abandoned for a short time (5 years), the TOC, TN and TP concentrations in soil experienced little change because poor water conditions combined with low productivity led to a large loss of soil organic matter. Land use change in the marsh areas has led to a decrease in C/N and C/P ratios of the soil, which are positively related to TOC and TN with different land uses (P < 0.05). Marsh reclamation has led to decreasing C/N and C/P ratios in soil and increasing pH values, which are negatively related to TOC, TN and TP (P < 0.05). Changes in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in soil with different land uses were mainly regulated by water-heat conditions and microbial activity, while the C/N and C/P ratios were mainly regulated by substrate availability. Our results suggest that C/N and C/P ratios and the pH value could be used as indicators to evaluate the quality and nutrient status of wetland soil under different land uses.  相似文献

Microbial ecosystems beneath glaciers and ice sheets are thought to play an active role in regional and global carbon cycling. Subglacial sediments are assumed to be largely anoxic, and thus various pathways of organic carbon metabolism may occur here. We examine the abundance and diversity of prokaryotes in sediment beneath two glaciers (Lower Wright Glacier in Antarctica and Russell Glacier in Greenland) with different glaciation histories and thus with different organic carbon substrates. The total microbial abundance in the Lower Wright Glacier sediment, originating from young lacustrine sediment, was an order of magnitude higher (~8 × 106 cells per gram of wet sediment) than in Russell Glacier sediment (~9 × 105 cells g−1) that is of Holocene-aged soil origin. 4% of the microbes from the Russell Glacier sediment and 0.04–0.35% from Lower Wright Glacier were culturable at 10°C. The Lower Wright Glacier subglacial community was dominated by Proteobacteria, followed by Firmicutes. The Russell Glacier library was much less diverse and also dominated by Proteobacteria. Low numbers and diversity of both Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota were found in both sediments. The identified clones were related to bacteria with both aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms, indicating the presence of both oxic and anoxic conditions in the sediments.  相似文献

In situ estimates of sediment nutrient flux are necessary to understand seasonal variations in internal loading in lakes. We investigated the sources and sinks of nutrients in the hypolimnion of a small (0.33 km2), relatively shallow (18 m max. depth), eutrophic lake (Lake Okaro, New Zealand) in order to determine changes in sediment nutrient fluxes resulting from a whole lake sediment capping trial using a modified zeolite phosphorus inactivation agent (Z2G1). Sediment nutrient fluxes in the hypolimnion were estimated as the residual term in a nutrient budget model that accounted for mineralisation of organic nutrients, nutrient uptake by phytoplankton and mixing, nitrification, adsorption/desorption and diffusion of dissolved nutrients at the thermocline. Of the total hypolimnetic phosphate and ammonium fluxes during one period of seasonal stratification (2007–08), up to 60 and 50%, respectively, were derived from the bottom sediments, 18 and 24% were due to mineralisation of organic species, 36 and 28% were due to phytoplankton uptake and 9 and 6% were from diffusion across the thermocline. Adsorption/desorption of phosphate to suspended solids and nitrification were of minor (<8%) importance to the total fluxes. Any reduction in sediment nutrient release by Z2G1 was small compared with both the total sediment nutrient flux and the sum of other hypolimnetic fluxes. Uneven sediment coverage of Z2G1 may have been responsible for the limited effect of the sediment capping layer formed by Z2G1.  相似文献

The influence of natural populations of the sub-surface deposit-feeding amphipod Victoriopisa australiensis on sediment biogeochemistry was assessed by randomly collecting 21 sediment cores in a zone of Coombabah Lake, southern Moreton Bay, Australia, where the benthic infauna was dominated by this species. Cores were incubated sequentially to determine sediment–water column fluxes of oxygen, dissolved inorganic carbon and inorganic N species, followed by incubations to determine rates of denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) using the isotope pairing technique. Finally, each core was sieved in order to determine the population and biomass of amphipods present. Whilst all measures of overall benthic metabolism (sediment oxygen demand, and effluxes of inorganic carbon and nitrogen) showed increased with amphipod density, with rates being stimulated 70–220% at the highest categorised density range of 2,500–3,500 ind m−2, only the correlation with dissolved inorganic carbon was statistically significant. In contrast, there were no discernable trends between amphipod densities and any of the N-cycle processes with the slopes of all correlations being very close to zero. These results highlight the differences in mesocosm simulations of fauna effects, which primarily relate to shifts in rates of organic matter turnover, compared to natural sediments where fauna effects relate more to induced changes in rates of organic matter deposition. Therefore, while mesocosms represent a powerful tool to investigate the mechanisms by which fauna influences microbial metabolism in the sediment, only studies of natural sediments can determine to what extent these mechanisms function in situ. The global proliferation of dams is one of the most significant anthropogenic impacts on the environment, resulting in the trapping of massive loads of sediment and nutrients in impoundments. Few studies, however, have examined these impounded sediments to understand patterns of organic carbon (OC) accumulation and the effects of watershed processes on carbon delivery. This study measured total organic carbon (TOC) and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) in Englebright Lake, CA to relate changes in OC sources and TOC accumulation to natural and anthropogenic events in the watershed and to depositional processes in the lake. Englebright Lake is a representative system for impoundments in small, mountainous rivers, and anthropogenic disturbances in the watershed caused high sediment accumulation rates in the lake. Throughout its 60-year history, 0.35 Tg OC has been trapped behind Englebright Dam and δ13C signatures indicate that more than 50% of the OC in Englebright Lake was derived from terrigenous sources. TOC content ranged from 0.03 to 30.24% of dry weight, and differed across depositional regimes; TOC content in topset deposits (0.35 ± 0.58%) was less than in foreset (2.64 ± 5.95%) and bottomset (1.51 ± 1.41%) deposits (p < 0.001) and TOC accumulation associated with flood events was higher (up to 231 kgOC m?2 year?1) than during non-event periods (0.2 to 39 kgOC m?2 year?1). TOC accumulation rates in Englebright Lake were up to an order of magnitude higher than previous estimates of OC burial in California impoundments. As the number and size of dams continues to expand worldwide, the storage of TOC in impoundments will likely add to the growing number of anthropogenic modifications to the global carbon cycle.  相似文献

The present work investigated the adsorption of Sb(III) and Sb(V) on five sediment samples (Pearl River, Yangtze River, Yellow River, Yongding River, and Liao River) from typical water systems in China and the adsorption of Sb(V) on Pearl River sediment with different organic carbon (OC) fractions using batch experiments. In order to assess the contributions of sedimentary organic components to the overall adsorption of pentavalent Sb on sediments, one sediment sample was treated by commonly used chemical and physical methods to remove different organic components. Experimental data of Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption on five sediments were successfully modeled using the Freundlich (r2 > 0.96) isotherm. In general, the sediments with high Fe and Al oxide contents and total organic carbon (TOC) had higher Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption than the sediments containing small amounts of Fe and Al oxides and TOC. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in sediment promoted the adsorption of Sb(V), and humin fractions and black carbon-like material in sediment had a high affinity for Sb(V).  相似文献

Wind is a key abiotic factor that influences the dynamics of arid and semiarid systems. We investigated two basic relationships on vegetation manipulation (grass cover reduction) plots at the Jornada Experimental Range in southern New Mexico: (1) wind erosion rates (horizontal mass flux and dust emission) versus vegetative cover, and (2) nutrient loss versus vegetative cover. The results indicate that wind erosion rates and nutrient loss by dust emission are strongly affected by plant cover; however, the importance of shrubs and grasses in reducing dust flux may not be equal. The dramatic increase of wind erosion between 75% grass cover reduction and 100% grass cover reduction suggests that sparsely distributed mesquites are relatively ineffective at reducing wind erosion and nutrient loss compared to grasses. Comparisons of nutrients between surface soils and wind blown dust indicate that aeolian transport is a major cause for the loss of soil nutrients in susceptible environments. We found that increased aeolian flux over three windy seasons (March 2004–July 2006) removed up to 25% of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) from the top 5 cm of soil, and about 60% of TOC and TN loss occurred in the first windy season (March–July 2004). The balance between net loss of nutrients by aeolian processes and the addition of nutrients by biotic processes changed from negative (net loss) to positive (net accumulation) between 50% grass cover reduction and 25% grass cover reduction. The estimated lifetime of surface soil TOC and TN of about 10 years on the plot with 100% grass cover reduction indicates that impacts of wind erosion on soil resources can occur on very short timescales.  相似文献

This study addresses deep pore water chemistry in a permeable intertidal sand flat at the NW German coast. Sulphate, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nutrients, and several terminal metabolic products were studied down to 5 m sediment depth. By extending the depth domain to several meters, insights into the functioning of deep sandy tidal flats were gained. Despite the dynamic sedimentological conditions in the study area, the general depth profiles obtained in the relatively young intertidal flat sediments of some metres depth are comparable to those determined in deep marine surface sediments. Besides diffusion and lithology which control pore water profiles in most marine surface sediments, biogeochemical processes are influenced by advection in the studied permeable intertidal flat sediments. This is supported by the model setup in which advection has to be implemented to reproduce pore water profiles. Water exchange at the sediment surface and in deeper sediment layers converts these permeable intertidal sediments into a “bio-reactor” where organic matter is recycled, and nutrients and DOC are released. At tidal flat margins, a hydraulic gradient is generated, which leads to water flow towards the creekbank. Deep nutrient-rich pore waters escaping at tidal flat margins during low tide presumably form a source of nutrients for the overlying water column in the study area. Significant correlations between the inorganic products of terminal metabolism (NH4 + and PO4 3−) and sulphate depletion suggest sulphate reduction to be the dominant pathway of anaerobic carbon remineralisation. Pore water concentrations of sulphate, ammonium, and phosphate were used to elucidate the composition of organic matter degraded in the sediment. Calculated C:N and C:P ratios were supported by model results.  相似文献
