Coral reproductive schedules have long been related to concomitant increases in regional sea surface temperature (SST). Yet, corals also mass spawn in the tropics, where SSTs vary little throughout the year. Here we show that the rise toward and fall from solar insolation maxima, which is the electromagnetic energy incident on the surface of the earth, coincide with coral spawning events in tropical Palau. Two insolation maxima (a consequence of the vernal and autumnal equinoxes) in the tropics lead to multiple spawning events per year. SSTs are poor predictors of coral spawning in the tropics. Multiple spawning events increase the rate of genetic recombination, which in turn may facilitate the likelihood of speciation and explain, in part, the high coral diversity in the tropics. We also show that mass spawning coincides with near-maximum solar insolation (5.0–7.2 kWh/m2/day) events from 33°N to 30°S in the western Pacific Ocean, and should be considered as one of the primary variables driving coral reproductive cycles.  相似文献

The circa-annual cycle of gametogenesis produces mature gametes at the spawning “season” for successful mass spawning of broadcast corals. We develop a bioenergetic integrate-and-fire model that reveals how annual insolation rhythms can entrain the gametogenetic cycles in tropical hermatypic corals to the appropriate spawning season, since photosynthate is their primary source of energy. In the presence of short-term fluctuations in the energy input, a feedback regulatory mechanism is likely required to achieve coherence of spawning times to within one lunar cycle, in order for subsequent signals such as lunar and diurnal light cycles to unambiguously determine the “correct” night of spawning. The feedback mechanism can also provide robustness against population heterogeneity that may arise due to genetic and environmental effects. We solve the integrate-and-fire bioenergetic model numerically using the Fokker–Planck equation and use analytical tools such as rotation number to study entrainment.  相似文献

We synthesize African paleoclimate from 150 to 30 ka (thousand years ago) using 85 diverse datasets at a regional scale, testing for coherence with North Atlantic glacial/interglacial phases and northern and southern hemisphere insolation cycles. Two major determinants of circum-African climate variability over this time period are supported by principal components analysis: North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) variations and local insolation maxima. North Atlantic SSTs correlated with the variability found in most circum-African SST records, whereas the variability of the majority of terrestrial temperature and precipitation records is explained by local insolation maxima, particularly at times when solar radiation was intense and highly variable (e.g., 150-75 ka). We demonstrate that climates varied with latitude, such that periods of relatively increased aridity or humidity were asynchronous across the northern, eastern, tropical and southern portions of Africa. Comparisons of the archaeological, fossil, or genetic records with generalized patterns of environmental change based solely on northern hemisphere glacial/interglacial cycles are therefore imprecise. We compare our refined climatic framework to a database of 64 radiometrically-dated paleoanthropological sites to test hypotheses of demographic response to climatic change among African hominin populations during the 150-30 ka interval. We argue that at a continental scale, population and climate changes were asynchronous and likely occurred under different regimes of climate forcing, creating alternating opportunities for migration into adjacent regions. Our results suggest little relation between large scale demographic and climate change in southern Africa during this time span, but strongly support the hypothesis of hominin occupation of the Sahara during discrete humid intervals ∼135-115 ka and 105-75 ka. Hominin populations in equatorial and eastern Africa may have been buffered from the extremes of climate change by locally steep altitudinal and rainfall gradients and the complex and variable effects of increased aridity on human habitat suitability in the tropics. Our data are consistent with hominin migrations out of Africa through varying exit points from ∼140-80 ka.  相似文献

The levels of heat‐shock proteins of the 70 kDa family (Hsp70s) were measured in different soft tissues of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from different locations and after exposure to various thermal conditions: acute temperature increments (1° C day−1), mid‐term (73 days at 4–15° C) and long‐term thermal acclimation (278 days at 8–15° C), and seasonal and latitudinal temperature variations (field samples). Tissue specific distribution patterns of Hsp70s were observed: liver > gills > red blood cells > brain > white muscle. Thus, different tissues may have required different levels of protection by Hsp70s, and possibly this was related to the rate of protein synthesis. There were no differences in tissue Hsp70s between Arctic cod populations (Arctic, i.e . Barents and White Seas, Norwegian coast, and North or Baltic Seas). No changes in Hsp70s levels were observed in response to temperature variation of any intensity (acute fluctuation or seasonal and latitudinal) within the range of physiological temperatures (4–15° C) in wild and laboratory Atlantic cod. This confirms previous observations that changes in Hsp70 caused by such temperature variation are often small in fishes. Probably, the constitutive level of Hsp70s in Atlantic cod was high enough to overcome potentially harmful effects of temperature variations within the physiological range. A suppressing effect of high temperature (15° C) has already been observed at a systematic level (as reduced rate of somatic growth), whereas it is not reflected in modified Hsp70s. Therefore, Hsp70s apparently played a secondary role in defining thermal tolerance limits in Atlantic cod. These conclusions are in line with a recent concept of thermal tolerance which indicated that the first line of thermal limitation in the cold and warm is a loss in aerobic scope.  相似文献

We assessed the effect of short-term (4.7–75.3 h) storage at low temperature (approximately 1 °C) on the viability of sea lamprey ( Petromyzon marinus L.) gametes. Hatching success decreased with storage time, but more than 20% eggs hatched even after 75.3 h of preservation. However, storage time drastically reduced the survival rate to the burrowing stage (i.e. the last prelarval stage), which decreased from 76% when the gametes were stored for 4.7 h to 0% after 75.3 h of storage.  相似文献

Studies on the maturity and spawning pattern of Sardinella aurita Valenciennes in relation to sea surface temperature (SST) and zooplankton abundance were carried out during the period 1986–91 in Ghanaian waters (West Africa). Both sexes exhibited synchronous seasonal maturation patterns. The mean length at first maturity occurred at approximately16.7 cm for males and 17.1 cm for females. The mean length at first maturity (L50) increased in comparison with that observed in the 1970s. Three spawning seasons were identified: a major season which extends from July to October, and two minor seasons which occur in March and December. Significant correlations were found between the female gonadosomatic index and SST, between egg abundance and SST, and between egg abundance and zooplankton abundance. The SST seems to be an important factor in species maturation. There is a time lag between attainment of peak gonad maturation and onset of spawning. Spawning appears to commence in response to the start of the coastal upwelling which is characterised by a sharp decrease in SST and an increase in zooplankton abundance.  相似文献

Adult Vinciguerria nimbaria in an area of the Atlantic Ocean (0–5°N; 10–20°W), collected from November 1994 to February 1998, exhibited two different patterns in diel behaviour: 'typical' behaviour which consisted of large diel vertical migration and 'atypical', characterized by concentrations of schools that remained in the surface layers during the daytime. The total life span of V. nimbaria was estimated at 6–7 months. Females were mature when they reached 30·6 mm standard length ( L S), which corresponded to an age of 85 days. Once the females were mature, spawning was continuous in the population as a whole, and V. nimbaria spawned continuously throughout the year. Spawning took place during two restricted times of the day: typical females spawned at dusk and atypical females spawned at dawn. Using the post-ovulatory follicles method, spawning frequency was estimated at 2 days. Batch fecundity was estimated at 1236 oocytes or 1230 oocytes g−1 of total body mass, and egg size was 650 µm whatever the period of the year. The lifetime fecundity of V. nimbaria was estimated at 9000 eggs (109 000 eggs if mortality rate was not taken into account), and the maximum stock egg production of a theoretical cohort occurred at 37 mm L S. Young adults thus contributed the most to the reproductive output for the survival of the population.  相似文献

The movement of 34 large (39–73 cm standard length) brown trout Salmo trutta was monitored using radio telemetry for up to 74 days in Brumunda, a small Norwegian river (mean annual discharge 3·3 m3 s−1) flowing into the large Lake Mjøsa. The maximum range of movement in the river was 20 km. No clear relationships existed between individual movement and water discharge, temperature and barometric pressure. Brown trout migrated at all levels of water discharge. At low discharge (<2 m3 s−1) movements were nocturnal. A weir 5·3 km from the outlet restricted ascending brown trout at low ( c . 6° C), but not at high ( c . 8° C) water temperatures. Spawning occurred in September to October and tagged individuals spent 2–51 days at the spawning sites. Mean migration speed from tagging to when the fish reached the spawning area, and from when they left the spawning areas and reached the lake was 1·0 and 2·3 km day−1, respectively. All tagged brown trout that survived spawning returned to the lake after spawning.  相似文献

Phase intensity changes of individual germinating spores of Bacillus subtilis were determined by phase-contrast light microscopy and image analysis. Two germination phases were investigated. The length of the time period before a change in phase brightness was evident and the duration of the phase intensity change until a constant greylevel was maintained. The incubation temperature (37 and 20 °C) and heat activation (10 min at 65 °C) had a distinct effect on both phases. At 37 °C, spores of B. subtilis 604 started to show a decrease in brightness in l -alanine buffer after 3–39 min and needed 10–39 min to complete the phase change. At 20 °C, lag times of 10–100 min were observed and the spores needed 30–100 min to reach a constant greylevel. Heat activation and subsequently exposure to l -alanine buffer at 20 °C reduced the lag phase to 6–90 min and the phase change was finished after 30–60 min. Our results indicate enzymatic involvement before and during the phase intensity change of germinating spores.  相似文献

The 30 year time series analyses revealed large temporal variation in the return rates and a recent increase in abundance of previous spawning Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the River Teno, northern Scandinavia. The mean proportion of repeat spawners was 7 and 4% in the total Atlantic salmon catch and 9 and 22% in multi‐sea‐winter (MSW) catch component for females and males, respectively. Previous spawners constituted on the average 7% of the catch in mass but up to 20%(31 t) and 30%(19 t) in 2003 and in 2004, respectively. In 1975–2000, the proportion of previous spawners varied between 1 and 6%(3–12% of MSW Atlantic salmon), whereas in 2001–2004, they accounted for 8–21%(16–35% of MSW Atlantic salmon) of the total Atlantic salmon catch. The number of previous spawners in the catch correlated significantly with the preceding numbers of respective 1–3 sea‐winter (SW) maiden Atlantic salmon 2 years earlier. The recent increase in the numbers of 1S1 and 2S1 (1 or 2 years at sea followed by first spawning and 1 year reconditioning period at sea) alternate spawning Atlantic salmon was a consequence of higher numbers of maiden 1SW and 2SW Atlantic salmon in the catches and increased sea temperatures. Similarly, the return rate of 1SW Atlantic salmon to second spawning has improved in recent years. Most previous spawners ascended and were captured early in the fishing season. The smolt and sea‐age combinations of repeat spawners comprised 68 age groups contributing with the annual mean of 15 age groups to the great diversity of the River Teno Atlantic salmon population complex.  相似文献

The white croaker Micropogonias furnieri , in the coastal Rocha Lagoon, spawned during 5 months, in late spring and summer. It was eurythermic (gonad growth at 12·5 to 25·5° C, spawning at 20 to 27° C) and mesoxic (living at 5·2 to 9·1 mg l-1). The spawning occurred in brackish (8–18 salinity), basic ( c . 8 pH) and oxygenated ( c . 8·0 mg l-1) waters. The temperature appeared to be an important environmental factor affecting the timing of reproduction. The size at first maturity (19–20 cm) was 11–12 cm lower than the reported for the Río de la Plata spawning area (Uruguay). Juveniles were observed throughout most of the year suggesting that the lagoon is also a nursery area. In Brazil, M. furnieri spawns in marine areas while in Uruguay it spawns in estuaries. This is the first time that a coastal lagoon of the subtropical and temperate western coast of the South Atlantic Ocean has been shown to be a spawning area of a marine species.  相似文献

A common-garden experiment was conducted on larvae to test for genetic differences in body shape among populations of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ). Offspring from four north-west Atlantic regions were reared from hatching to postmetamorphosis at two temperatures (7 ± 1 °C and 11 ± 1 °C) and two food levels (1500 and 4500 prey L−1). Body shape differed between populations and treatments. Population differences were greatest between south-west Scotian Shelf cod and those further north; the former were characterized by a deeper body, larger head, and longer caudal peduncle than cod from the other populations. Significant differences were also observed between two putative populations on the south-west Scotian Shelf, suggesting genetic divergence between spawning aggregations at small spatial scales (< 100 km). Temperature and food supply also influenced body shape, with the effect of the former being more pronounced. Individuals reared at the higher temperature or food level had a deeper body and a larger head than those reared at the lower temperature or food supply. Phenotypic responses to changes in the rearing environment also differed among populations, indicating genetic differences in phenotypic plasticity. Differences between populations in morphology and in phenotypic plasticity suggest genetic divergence at both large (> 1000 km) and small (< 100 km) spatial scales. The genetic differences at large spatial scales counteracted the expected effects of temperature differences in the wild, suggesting countergradient variation in morphology among these populations.  © 2006 Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada. Experiments were designed to examine the effects of various temperature challenges on oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates and protein utilization in juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar . Fish acclimated to 15° C were acutely and abruptly exposed to either 20 or 25° C for a period of 3 h. To simulate a more environmentally relevant temperature challenge, a third group of fish was exposed to a gradual increase in temperature from 15 to 20° C over a period of 3 h ( c. 1·7° C h−1). Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates were monitored before, during and after the temperature shift. From the ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption rates, protein utilization rates were calculated. Acute temperature changes (15–20° C or 15–25° C) caused large and immediate increases in the oxygen consumption rates. When the temperature was gradually changed ( i.e. 1·7° C h−1), however, the rates of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were only marginally altered. When fish were exposed to warmer temperatures ( i.e. 15–20° C or 15–25° C) protein use generally remained at pre-exposure (15° C) levels. A rapid transfer back to 15° C (20–15° C or 25–15° C) generally increased protein use in S. salar . These results indicate that both the magnitude and the rate of temperature change are important in describing the physiological response in juvenile salmonids.  相似文献

The reproductive biology and its seasonality were examined in the deep-water, solitary coral Fungiacyathus marenzelleri from 2,200 m depth in the NE Atlantic, using histological techniques. A total of 186 corals were collected using either an Otter trawl (semi-balloon) or Agassiz trawl from the research vessel RRS Challenger between 1979 and 1991. All individuals were gonochoric, with all 48 mesenteries being fertile. A high fecundity was recorded (2,892 ᇀ.4 oocytes per polyp) with strong size-dependency. This species is a quasi-continuous reproducer with overlapping gametogenesis for both spermacysts and oocytes. No planulae were observed and broadcasting of gametes is inferred, with the large egg size (max. 750-µm diameter) suggesting lecithotrophic development. There is a non-significant trend towards a synchronous spawning event during June/July. Asexual fission was observed, though in low numbers.  相似文献

Spawning time of female Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua L.) can be predicted to within 3 days using vitellogenic oocyte diameters measured over the last month before spawning. Simulations show that a l°C drop in temperature during vitellogenesis delays spawning by about 8–10 days. Similar results were obtained with fish on low ration for 4–8 months before spawning. Moderately fed females held over two to four consecutive spawning seasons demonstrated a significant delay (⋍3–40 days) in the date of first spawning as the fish grew older and more fecund. Forecasting studies on spawning migrating Arcto-Norwegian cod gave no evidence of a significant effect of fish length on the time of spawning. Warmer water temperature during vitellogenesis for the larger fish appears to compensate for the negative effect of fecundity On spawning time.  相似文献

Abstract:  The purpose of this research was to investigate post-harvest heat treatment of Valencia oranges as an effective disinfestation protocol (fast, no fruit damage) for the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Forced high-temperature air was applied under the following conditions: (a) exposure to air temperature of 56°C, for fast increase of temperature in the interior of the fruit, (b) reduction in air temperature to 47°C when the fruit centre reached 47°C and (c) maintenance of fruits in the chamber for another 30 min. Relative humidity in the treatment chamber was kept between 50% and 65% during treatment. Forced air at 47°C applied for 30 min on eggs before hatch or late third instar larvae (the most heat-tolerant stages) resulted in complete kill. Egg and larval sensitivity to high temperature differed between a wild strain and a laboratory genetic-sexing strain based on white pupa mutation. In this strain males emerge from brown pupae and females from white pupae. In particular, mature eggs from the wild strain were significantly more temperature resistant than eggs from the laboratory strain. Exposure of Valencia oranges of a diameter of 7–7.5 cm to 56°C forced air for about 86 and 99 min was required to increase temperature to 47°C at 1.5 cm depth and the fruit centre respectively. Treated oranges showed no substantial peel or interior deterioration, or change in colour and taste when kept at 25°C and 50–60% RH for a period of up to 1 month following treatment. Treatment in 1% O2 atmosphere, produced by flushing of CO2 into the treatment chamber, resulted in about 1°C reduction in killing temperature and faster increase in temperature inside the fruit to a lethal level.  相似文献

Abstract.  The effect of long-term (seasonal) acclimation and rapid cold hardening is investigated on the cold torpor temperature ( CT min) of adult grain aphids, Sitobion avenae, reared at 20 or 10 °C for more than 6 months before experimentation. Rapid cold hardening is induced by exposing aphids reared at 20 to 0 °C for 3 h and aphids reared at 10 to 0 °C for 30 min (acclimation regimes previously found to induce maximum rapid cold hardening). The effect of cooling aphids from the same rearing regimes from 10 to −10 °C at 1, 0.5 and 0.1 °C min−1 is also investigated. In the 20 °C acclimated population, rapid cold hardening and cooling at 0.1 °C min−1 both produce a significant decrease in CT min from 1.5 ± 0.3 to –0.9 ± 0.3 and –1.3 ± 0.3 °C, respectively. Rapid cold hardening also results in a significant reduction in CT min of the population reared at 10 °C from 0.8 ± 0.1 to –0.9 ± 0.2 °C. However, none of the cooling regimes tested reduces the CT min of the winter-acclimated (10 °C) population. The present study demonstrates that rapid cold-hardening induced during the cooling phase of natural diurnal temperature cycles could lower the movement threshold of S. avenae , allowing insects to move and continue feeding at lower temperatures than would otherwise be possible.  相似文献

Abstract. The majority of tagged colonies of Pseudoplexaura porosa in Bermuda were reproductive over 2 months in the summer. They spawned 5–8 d after the full moon, with a peak on the sixth day, similar to colonies in Panama. The months of spawning were August and September in 1998, but July and August in 1999 and 2000. This temporal difference between the months of spawning corresponded to inter-annual variations in seawater temperature profiles. Initial gamete development each year occurred only when the daily mean seawater temperature during the month before spawning exceeded 27°C. There was a significant positive relationship between reproductive effort (gamete volume) of colonies and rising seawater temperature in the month preceding spawning; this was true for both the initial and the second spawning months. The end of the reproductive season each year was triggered by the decline in seawater temperature past the summer maximum. The duration of the reproductive season of conspecifics at the central Caribbean reef of Panama is 2 months longer than in Bermuda. This can be explained by the smaller annual temperature range at the lower latitude and the earlier onset of temperatures favorable for gamete development. Fecundity estimates for members of P. porosa (mean oocyte and spermary densities) in Bermuda were lower than for conspecifics in Panama. The shorter reproductive season in Bermuda, in addition to the lower fecundity of colonies, indicates that reproduction in P. porosa is compromised at this high latitude reef.  相似文献

Abstract.  In single-sensillum extracellular electrophysiological recordings, terminal campaniform sensilla at the tip of antennae of the ground beetle Pterostichus aethiops (Pz., 1797) show action potentials of three sensory cells, A-, B- and C-cells, distinguished by differences in their spike amplitudes. Only the A-cell, with the largest spike amplitude, is highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, showing remarkable changes in its firing rate induced by changes in temperature of 0.1 °C. The firing rate of A-cells at 23 °C varies from 15–52 Hz among different beetles. Mean impulse frequency of A-cells is found to be a function of steady temperature, the firing rate decreasing with temperature increase. A-cells respond to a rapid temperature drop with a strong phasic-tonic reaction; larger decreases in temperature evoke higher peak frequency values. Maximum peak frequencies, varying from 380–630 Hz in different beetles, are induced by temperature decreases of 3–10 °C, whereas temperature rise strongly inhibits impulse activity of the A-cell. The first manifestation of rapid warming in the nerve impulse sequence is a very long interspike period, followed by diminished activity. Both the length of the long interspike period and the rate of following impulse activity are functions of temperature change; hence, A-cells respond to temperature changes as typical cold receptors, similar to coeloconic and short hair-like sensilla in other insects.  相似文献

Broadcast spawning by corals is a tightly synchronized process characterized by co-ordinated gamete release within 30–60 min time windows once per year. In shallow water corals, annual water temperature cycles set the month, lunar periodicity the day, and sunset time the hour of spawning. This tight temporal regulation is critical for achieving high fertilization rates in a pelagic environment. Given the differences in light and temperature that occur with depth and the importance of these parameters in regulating spawn timing, it has been unclear whether deeper coral can respond to the same environmental cues that regulate spawning behaviour in shallower coral. In this report, a remotely operated vehicle was used to monitor coral spawning activity at the Flower Garden Banks at depths from 33 to 45 m. Three species Montastraea cavernosa, Montastraea franksi, and Diploria strigosa were documented spawning within this depth range. All recorded spawning events were within the same temporal windows as shallower conspecifics. These data indicate that deep corals at this location either sense the same environmental parameters, despite local attenuation, or communicate with shallower colonies that can sense such spawning cues.  相似文献
