ABSTRACT

The results of a floristic study of benthic marine macroalgae on rocky substrata from the Tremiti Islands (Adriatic Sea) are presented. The list of taxa at specific and infraspecific level consists of 226 Rhodophyceae, 59 Fucophyceae and 36 Chlorophyceae. Of these 321 taxa, 147 are newly reported from the Tremiti Islands. Data on the reproductive phenology of each species, and comments on some species of particular interest are also given.  相似文献

Abstract

During research directed towards the employment of the biological resources of the North Adriatic lagoons, from January 1991 to December 1992, in both tidal phases, a survey was carried out on the phytoplankton and the chemico-physical parameters of the Scardovari lagoon. Data analyses allowed two different areas to be distinguished: one inner, which was generally characterized by high phytoplanktonic densities (St. 3–4), the other outer, which was more influced by marine load (St. 1–2). Photosynthetic picoplankton was dominant in terms of cell number in most samples. Phytoplanktonic fraction >2 μm was represented mainly by diatoms, which showed the higher species number. During the sample observation, some dinoflagellates, considered toxic or potentially toxic, were found. Their presence was important because of their effect on the bivalve mollusc cultures.  相似文献

Laminaran, fucose-containing polysaccharides (‘fucans’) and alginic acid were isolated from Dictyopteris plagiogramma.The laminaran comprised G- and M-chains (ratio 3: 1). The ‘fucans’ were present in four extracts of a four-step sequential extraction procedure and all contained slightly differing proportions of fucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, glucuronic acid residues and half-ester sulphate. Non-reducing chain ends as well as the positions of glycosidic linkages to fucose, xylose and glucuronic acid are the same as previously reported for other ‘fucans’. Galactose and mannose occur mainly as trisubstituted residues with substitution at 0-1, 0-3, 0-4 and at 0-1, 0-3, 0-6, respectively.  相似文献

Fresh seaweeds, both wild and cultivated,are commonly eaten as food in the HawaiianIslands. Before Western contact, limu (seaweed) was a regular part of thediet, and is thought to have contributedvitamins and essential mineral nutrientsnot found in other staple food items. Twenty-two species of edible Hawaiianmacroalgae (6 Chlorophyta, 4 Phaeophyta, 12Rhodophyta) were analyzed for protein,lipid, carbohydrate, ash, caloric, mineraland vitamin content. Halymeniaformosa and Porphyra vietnamensisranked highest in total protein contentamong the species analyzed. Most speciescontained less than 5% crude lipid,although two Dictyota species hadover 16% crude lipid based on dry weight. Soluble carbohydrates ranged from 4.5 to39.9% dry weight. Ash values ranged from22.4% to 64.2%. Dictyotasandvicensis and Monostromaoxyspermum had caloric content each over3000 cal g-1 ash-free dry weight. Allspecies contained measurable quantities of11 essential mineral elements. The majorityof Hawaiian seaweeds tested contained-carotene (vitamin A), and Enteromorpha flexuosa contained thehighest amount of vitamin C (3 mg g-1).  相似文献

The commercial exploitation of seaweeds for use as food and for the production of agar, alginate and carrageenan is outlined. The quantities of seaweed harvested for each purpose are tabulated and discussed. Seaweeds for food are derived chiefly from China, Japan and Korea, with almost 94% obtained by cultivation. Alginophytes are collected in 15 countries but six of these account for more than 80% of the total harvest; all are from natural stocks except for a large quantity of Laminaria cultivated in China. Natural carrageenophytes, from 12 countries, now account for only 20% of the total harvest; the remainder is cultivated Eucheuma species, 99% of which is produced in only two countries, the Philippines and Indonesia. Of the four categories of commercial resources of seaweeds considered, agarophytes are spread more evenly over a greater number of countries; they come from 20 countries and only five of these are minor contributors to the total. Gelidium species are particularly important because of the high quality agar they yield; their distribution and location are discussed.  相似文献

Crystalline mannitol and some oligosaccharides were separated from ethanolic extracts of Desmarestia ligulata and D. firma. Laminaran, ‘fucans’ and alginic acid were also isolated from both species. The laminaran from D. ligulata comprised both M- and G-chains but no M-chains were found in the laminaran from D. firma. In both species the amount of ‘fucan’ was small, particularly in D. firma. Both ‘fucans’ contained glucuronic acid, galactose, xylose and fucose and that from D. ligulata also contained mannose. After sequential extraction of D. ligulata with water, acid and alkali evidence was obtained for the presence of cellulose, a uronan, and protein in the residual material.  相似文献

Extracts of 13 Korean seaweeds, previously shown to contain antiviral activity, were investigated in more detail in order to learn the nature of the antiviral compounds and their mechanisms of action. One extract, from Codium fragile, was active against all three test viruses (herpes simplex, HSV; Sindbis, SINV; polio), whereas the others were more selective. Thus four species, Enteromorpha linza, Colpomenia bullosa, Scytosiphon lomentaria, and Undaria pinnatifida, were active against HSV and SINV, but not poliovirus. The other eight were active against either HSV or SINV. In all cases there was evidence for photosensitizers, since the antiviral activities required or were enhanced substantially by light. In general UVA (long wave ultraviolet) was much more effective than visible light in promoting activity, although the extract of Sargassum sagamianum could be activated equally by either. In experiments to determine the site of action of these antiviral extracts, the predominant activity was virucidal (i.e. direct inactivation of virus particles), rather than inhibition of virus replication, although Sargassum sagamianum also could protect cells against subsequent virus infection. These results imply that different antiviral compounds are present among the extracts, and furthermore the activities cannot be explained in terms of common ingredients such as polysaccharides or tannins. We suggest that seaweeds may be a source of potentially useful and interesting antiviral compounds. This study assessed the possibility of using drift and subtidal seaweeds from St Lawrence Island, Alaska (lat. 63°N) for sale by the native population after simple processing. Over 125 km of coastline were surveyed for distribution of both drift and subtidal seaweeds. Drift seaweed wet weight densities ranged from 0.2 to over 9 kg m−2, with an average of over 4 t km−1 in the areas sampled. Attached, benthic seaweed densities ranged from 0.15 to 0.32 kg m−2. Thirty and 35% of the biomass was composed of Agarum cribrosum and species of Laminaria, respectively, both as drift and as benthic seaweed. Data from tagged Laminaria indicated that growth rates were relatively slow for most of the year. The drift seaweed resource on the coasts south and west of the city of Gambell appeared to have good potential for a small-scale commercial harvest. (*author for correspondence)  相似文献

Temporal and spatial variability of micro and mesozooplankton was studied in 1998 and 1999 at four stations in the Neretva Channel area influenced by the Neretva river and the open waters of the south Adriatic Sea. The area is orthophosphate limited, but an excessive accumulation of land derived nitrogen is prevented by phytoplankton uptake and the general circulation pattern. Microzooplankton was dominated by ciliates, with average abundances comparable to other Adriatic channel areas (122–543 ind. l−1). Non-loricate ciliates (NLC) generally peaked in the warmer periods, but a winter increase was evident towards the inner part of the channel. Tintinnid abundances generally increased in autumn. A significant relationship with temperature was not recorded for either protozoan group. An inverse relationship between NLC and salinity might be indirectly caused by their preference for the food abundant surface layer. Mesozooplankton was dominated by copepods, with distinct summer maxima throughout the area and pronounced winter maxima of >10,000 ind. m−3 at the inner stations. The community was predominantly neritic but the open sea waters were important in structuring the mesozooplankton assemblage at all stations during the autumn–winter period. Although temperature regulated the seasonal dynamics of most metazoans and the species succession in the copepod community, small omnivorous copepods (Oncaea media complex, Oithona nana and Euterpina acutifrons) dominated regardless of the season. A trophic link between copepods and ciliates was evident in winter during low phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Techniques are described for measuring gas exchange in seaweeds held in moist air (air suspension). In the species we have examined, oxygen has little or no effect on photosynthesis except at very low (50 μ1·1?1) CO2 concentration. Photorespiration could not be detected unless the seaweeds were treated simultaneously with high O2 and low CO2 or with the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, diamox. However, sporulating and meristematic tissues exhibit oxygen-insensitive light respiration (CO2production in light not associated with photorespiratory metabolism). Elevated pH in the surface water of seaweeds also caused light respiration. Oxygen-sensitive wound respiration was observed that could easily be mistaken for photorespiration. C4 photosynthesis could not be detected. On the basis of several experimental approaches it was concluded that these seaweeds normally absorb bicarbonate rather than CO2 from sea water. High CO2 concentrations are required in gas streams aerating seaweed cultures in air or water suspension to maintain the bicarbonate concentration at levels normally found in sea water and to support normal levels of photosynthesis.  相似文献

A bacterial strain N-1 was isolated as a decomposer of alginate and identified as Deleya marina. The alyA encoding for alginate lyase was cloned into Escherichia coli. The structural gene, located on a 1.9-kb SalI fragment, revealed 1,122 bp encoding a mature protein of 348 amino acids and a signal peptide of 26 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of the D. marina alginate lyase showed high homology to AlgL of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with 63% identity and belonging to class 1 by hydrophobic cluster analysis.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Pseudo-nitzschia in relation to environmental factors was investigated from March 2002 to July 2008 in Lim Bay, in the north-eastern Adriatic Sea. Domoic acid was monitored in the breeding population of Mytilus galloprovincialis from 2005 to 2008. The principal-component analysis of environmental parameters showed that the system is mostly temperature driven. The phytoplankton community was mainly composed of diatoms. Pseudo-nitzschia was the dominant diatom, present in 60% of samples, with a maximum (1.6 × 106 cells L−1) contribution up to 97% of the total diatom abundance. Morphological analysis revealed Pseudo-nitzschia manii and potentially toxic Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta and Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha as the dominant species in blooms. Pseudo-nitzschia abundance positively correlated to temperature, phosphate and ammonia in accordance with its maximal abundance in the summer/autumn period when fish farms had a maximum impact on the environment. Domoic acid was detected in M. galloprovincialis in concentrations below regulatory limits, ranging from 0.097 to 0.8721 μg g−1 in five cases from April to October 2005 in Lim Bay, but so far it is not clear which of the species was responsible for DA production. This study is also the first record of P. manii, P pungens and P. fraudulenta species in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

Vibrio vulnificus is a ubiquitous toxigenic bacterium found in a coastal environment but little is known about its occurrence and seasonality among seaweeds, which are widely consumed as seafood in Japan. Therefore, we have observed the bacterium's abundance in seawater and seaweed samples from three areas of the Kii Channel, Japan, during June 2003 to May 2004. A total of 192 samples were collected: 24 from each source in summer, autumn, winter and spring. The samples were selectively cultivated following the most probable number (MPN) technique. Vibrio vulnificus population ranged from 0 to 10(3) MPN 100 mL(-1) seawater or 10 g seaweeds; higher counts were observed during summer. The optimum temperature, salinity and pH for the bacterium were 20-24 degrees C, 24-28 p.p.t. and 7.95-8.15, respectively. However, seaweeds always contained higher V. vulnificus than seawater. Among 280 V. vulnificus strains, detected by species-specific colony hybridization and PCR, 78, 74, 11 and 16 were from seaweeds and 46, 42, 2 and 11 were from seawater during summer, autumn, winter and spring, respectively. Ribotyping of 160 selected strains revealed a higher genotypic diversity (18 patterns) among strains from seaweeds than from seawater (10 patterns). Seaweeds can thus act as a potential habitat for V. vulnificus and are more unsafe for consumption during summer.  相似文献

Recurrent occurrences of visible mucilage “clouds” that cover areas up to several hundred kilometres with vertical dimensions of 20–30 m have been recorded in the stratified water column in the northern Adriatic. In the past this was described as “mare sporco” phenomenon. Past studies of the phenomenon indicated that phytoplankton is an important component of mucilage. Our research revealed the composition of phytoplankton assemblages in different types of mucilaginous aggregates collected during the summers of 1997 and 2000 using pigment biomarkers (HPLC). Phytoplankton biomass in the mucilage samples was very high, ranging from 7.9 μg g−1 to 390.8 μg g−1 of chlorophyll a per unit of dry mass of mucilage. The phytoplankton community in the early, loose stage of mucilaginous aggregates was heterogeneous, as indicated by the diversity of detected pigments. The number of phytoplankton groups decreased as the aggregates aged and diatoms increased in relative biomass (up to 92.7%). Phytoplankton biomass in seawater was similar in years with and without mucilage; however, significantly higher contributions to the total biomass of 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin-containing phytoplankton (prymnesiophytes) were found in the upper 10 m in spring of the “mucilaginous years” (1997 and 2000) followed by prevalence of diatoms in summer. The Fp pigment index used to assess seawater trophic conditions reached lower values in April–May in mucilaginous years (1997 and 2000) compared to non-mucilaginous years (1998 and 1999). We conclude that the role of prymnesiophytes and other small flagellates is crucial for the initial phases of mucilage appearance. Aggregates represent a favourable environment for the secondary development of opportunistic diatoms that foster mucilage formation.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial patterns of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) were studied monthly from January 1997 to December 1998 in the middle Adriatic Sea. Bacterial and HNF relationships with phytoplankton biomass and temperature were analyzed to examine how the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down factors may shift over seasons and locations. For the coastal area, an inconsistent relationship between bacterial abundance and chlorophyll a and a stronger relationship between bacterial abundance and bacterial production suggest that other substrates than those of phytoplankton origin are important for bacteria. The analysis of simultaneous effects of temperature and bacterial production on bacterial abundance showed that the effect of temperature obscured the effects of bacterial production, suggesting that bacterial growth itself is highly temperature-dependent. The relationship between HNF abundance and bacterial abundance was slightly improved by the inclusion of in situ temperature, bacterial production or both parameters, as additional independent variables. About 60% of the variability in HNF abundance can be explained by bacterial abundance, bacterial production and temperature. In the open sea, tight coupling of bacterial abundance with chlorophyll a concentrations implied that phytoplankton-derived substrates have a dominant role in controlling bacterial abundance. During the colder months, bacterial abundance was high enough to support higher HNF abundance than observed, suggesting that predation exerted a minor depressing influence on bacterial abundance during that period. The sequence of vitellogenesis as related to size increase of the oocytes of Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål) (Scyphozoa, Semaeostomeae) was examined to assess the influence of climatic factors on its reproductive period in the central and northern Adriatic Sea. From 1981 to 1985, 5 specimens with similar diameter were sampled each month. One ovary was excised from each individual and examined both with a videoanalyzer, to count the oocytes and to check their size distribution, and through histology to assess the stage of maturation in relation to the diameter. Oocytes of all stages were present in the ovaries of individuals down to a bell diameter of 3.5 cm. Thus reproduction occurs throughout the year in the central and north Adriatic Sea. However, the number of oocytes in different developmental stages in a gonad may range from a minimum value recorded in summer to two peaks in spring and autumn. The quantitative distribution is related to sea temperature and thus to metabolic rate, and to food availability.  相似文献
