Changes and degradation of seaweed stands in the Northern Adriatic   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Munda  Ivka M. 《Hydrobiologia》1993,260(1):239-253
During the last two decades conditions in the polluted shelf area of the Northern Adriatic became critical, leading to eutrophication and anoxia. They are reflected in changes and degradation of the macrophytobenthos with simultaneous increase of phytoplankton blooms. Pollution-induced changes of the benthic algal vegetation comprise altered zonation patterns and leading algal associations along with a decrease in species number and fresh weight biomass. A reduction or absence of fucoid stands was observed in the eulittoral and sublittoral. Fucus virsoides was in most cases replaced by ephemeral species which form distinct zones during spring and by turf-like mats of Gelidium pusillum.Sublittoral Cystoseira stands were either reduced or absent, replaced by populations of Halopteris scoparta, Dictyota dichotoma, Halopithys incurvus, Padina pavonica and under extreme conditions by Ulva rigida with Scytosiphon lomentaria and Enteromorpha species during spring. A decreased depth penetration of macroalgae was observed in polluted sites. It seems likely that amorphous mucus aggregations resulting probably from excess phytoplankton blooms which were found during summer months of the last few years, have a deleterious effect on macroalgae.  相似文献

The benthic algal communities of two subtidal sites, located on opposite coasts of S?o Miguel Island (S?o Roque in the south and S?o Vicente on the north coast), were studied over a 2 year period (September 1993–September 1995). At both sites the sublittoral region was surveyed from low-tide level down to a depth of 15 m. Qualitative and quantitative changes are described. A depth-related gradient in species diversity and biomass was found at both localities. In general, red algae such as corallines and Pterocladiella capillacea predominated in the shallow sublittoral (5 m) while brown algae such as Zonaria and Stypocaulon were more abundant at 15 m. Multivariate analyses emphasized the existence at each study site of two communities (5 and 15 m depth), separated by a large transition zone. The 15 m community on the south coast site showed the largest number of species (52), whereas the lowest diversity (30 species) also occurred at this site in the 5 m community. A clear seasonal pattern of biomass change could be discerned only at S?o Vicente where the highest biomass was recorded in spring/summer. No major inter-annual variations could be detected, indicating relatively stable communities at least on a short-term basis. Received in revised form: 28 March 2001 Electronic Publication  相似文献

The species composition and seasonal dynamics of density and biomass of euglenoids in the plankton of Peter the Great Bay were examined. Ten species of euglenoids were found. Of these, Eutreptiella braarudiiThrondsen and Eutreptiella eupharyngeaMoestrup et Norris are new records for the Far Eastern seas of Russia. Sharply pronounced peaks of euglenoid density and biomass occurred in the spring and summer. Increased density and biomass of species of the genera EuglenaEhr. and EutreptiaPerty were observed in polluted waters near sewage outlets.  相似文献

Summary The diatoms of two Dutch lowland streams were studied. The stream Beerze is heavily polluted by the effluent of a sewage treatment plant, causing a change in the pH from less than 4 to more than 6. The acidobiontic diatomEunotia exigua is replaced by more alkaline and eutraphentic species such asGomphonema parvulum, Cyclotelia meneghiniana andFragilaria capucina. The Simpson diversity index rises from 0.2 in the upper course to 0.9 in the middle course and maintains this level in the lower course. From stream Rosep samples of 1919–1930 and recent ones were studied. This stream is polluted now by agriculture. In the earlier samples oligo-mesotraphentic species dominated (Eunotia spp.,Melosira distans). In 1976 the species of organically polluted waters were most abundant. The oligo-mesotraphentic species were hardly recovered. In spite of the severe pollution the number of rare species in both streams is still high, compared with that in stagnant waters. Only in mesotrophic moorland pools and mesotrophic quivering bogs, which are situated in trophic gradients just like both streams, a comparable number of rare species may be found.  相似文献

Abstract Many molluscs in tidal wetlands climb trees as the tide rises, a behaviour usually assumed to be a means of avoiding subtidal predators. Some species are more active during neap tides, when the access of subtidal predators to the forest is limited, but rest on trees during spring tides. Cerithidea anticipata, which inhabits the mangrove forests around Darwin Harbour (Northern Territory, Australia), displayed almost exactly the opposite pattern. This species climbed higher, and was less active, during neap tides that did not flood the forest than during spring tides. In experiments with tethered snails, individuals prevented from climbing died during neap tides, apparently from physiological stress. Further, individuals resting on trees around clearings, usually selected shaded sites. These results suggest that the major reason C. anticipata climbed was to avoid physiological stress during neap tides, not subtidal predators during spring tides. There was some evidence of predation under the canopy, but the rate was relatively low and the species responsible appeared to be resident in the forest.  相似文献

Summary

The reproductive cycle of an Alvania species is studied for first time. Alvania mediolittoralis Gofas, 1989 is an endemic Azorean rissoid very common in sheltered places and particularly abundant among the algal turf covering the lower half of the intertidal and upper subtidal rocky shores. This species reproduces throughout the year, with two spawning peaks, one during early spring and the other in late autumn. In an attempt to relate to current paleobiogeographical studies, inferences are made regarding the ecological advantages of species with a continuous type of reproduction, on Azorean shores, during glacial episodes.  相似文献

Lessonia is the main Laminariales found along the southeast Pacific coast. Lessonia nigrescens Bory de Saint‐Vincent in the intertidal and Lessonia trabeculata Villouta et Santelices in the subtidal, are the most important habitat constructors in rocky coastal communities in northern and central Chile. In both species, the seasonal production and erosion of distal tissue were estimated in biomass units using the Area of Constant Biomass Model that combined the individual blade elongation, obtained with the traditional hole‐punching method, with the blade length and biomass distribution along the blade. In austral late spring (December 96) and autumn (May 97), blade production and erosion were transformed to the level of population from standing stock measurements (number and biomass of blades and plants per substrate area), considering that previous blade weight analysis showed the highest and lowest values at these times, as well as the population parameter extremes that were expected to occur. Both species displayed a seasonal pattern, with a production increase in later winter and spring and decrease towards the end of summer that coincided with higher distal tissue erosion. At the level of individual blades, Lessonia trabeculata showed higher mean production (0.026 g dw d−1) and erosion (0.01 g dw d−1) than L. nigrescens (production 0.01 g dw d−1 and loss 0.002 g dw d−1). The standing stocks, with respect to density and biomass, were similar in spring and autumn for both populations. Nevertheless, the net productivity (production minus erosion) of the intertidal L. nigrescens showed greater values due to the greater density of blades (2112 ± 1360 (SE) blades m−2) compared with the subtidal L. trabeculata (527 ± 151 (SE) blades m−2). Spring net productivities of 42 g dw m−2d−1 (254 g ww m−2d−1; 11.46 gC m−2d−1) for L. nigrescens and 11 g dw m−2 d−1 (64 g ww m−2 d−1; 2.46 gC m−2d−1) for L. trabeculata were estimated. A preliminary model of production and biomass fate for Lessonia populations is proposed.  相似文献

A seagrass in Japan,Phyllospadix iwatensis Makino, is distributed in the lower intertidal zone and upper subtidal zone making a dense population on the Choshi coast, Japan. IntertidalP. iwatensis is able to receive sufficient light for photosynthesis but experienced severe exposure to the air, which decreased a large amount of aboveground biomass in April to June (i.e. the daytime exposure season). SubtidalP. iwatensis was never exposed throughout the year and the aboveground biomass increased gradually over the daytime exposure season. However, the maximum aboveground biomass and shoot density of the subtidal plant never exceeded that of the intertidal plant. The dense foliage, large aboveground biomass and high shoot density of both intertidal and subtidal plants is likely to be an adaptation to heavy water movement, but the subtidal plants always received insufficient light for photosynthesis as a result of having dense foliage, particularly in turbid water. In choppy and swell sea,P. iwatensis did not seem to be adapted to growing in the subtidal zone where there was shortage of light.  相似文献

The Japanese kelp Undaria pinnatifida was found on 7th September 2005 in Ría Deseado (Santa Cruz, Argentina). This invasive algae was registered from the lower intertidal to the upper levels of the subtidal zone. The sporophytes were fixed to slabs, gravel and rocks of variable sizes and were also present as epibionts of tunicates. The sporophytes total length ranged between 3 and 88 cm, with a mean of 28.75 cm in the intertidal and 38.3 cm in the subtidal. The density and biomass increased from the intertidal to the subtidal. The kelp population showed a higher number of small immature individuals in the intertidal than␣subtidal where the organisms were bigger and with more individual biomass. This first record of U. pinnatifida in Southern Patagonia extends its southern distribution limit in Argentina, showing progressive expansion in the southwestern Atlantic. More surveys must be conducted to understand the evolution of U. pinnatifida invasion and its impact on the native benthic community.  相似文献

Meiofauna composition, abundance, biomass, distribution and diversity were investigated for 31 stations in summer. The sampling covered the whole Oosterschelde and comparisons between the subtidal — intertidal and between the western-central — eastern compartment were made.Meiofauna had a community density ranging between 200 and 17 500 ind 10 cm–2, corresponding to a dry weight of 0.2 and 8.4 gm–2. Abundance ranged between 130 and 17 200 ind 10 cm–2 for nematodes and between 10 and 1600 ind 10 cm–2 for copepods. Dry weight biomass of these taxa was between 0.5–7.0 gm–2 and 0.008–0.3 gm–2 for nematodes and copepods respectively. The meiofauna was strongly dominated by the nematodes (36–99%), who's abundance, biomass and diversity were significantly higher intertidally than subtidally and significantly higher in the eastern part than in the western part. High numbers were positively correlated with the percentage silt and negatively with the median grain size of the sand fraction. The abundance and diversity of the copepods were highest in the subtidal, but their biomass showed an inverse trend being highest on the tidal flats. The taxa diversity of the meiofauna community and species diversity of both the nematodes and the copepods were higher in subtidal stations than on tidal flats. In the subtidal, the meiofauna and copepod diversity decreased from west to east, whereas nematode diversity increased. The vertical profile clearly reflected the sediment characteristics and could be explained by local hydrodynamic conditions.Seasonal variation was pronounced for the different taxa with peak abundance in spring, summer or autumn and minimum abundance in winter.Changes in tidal amplitude and current velocity enhanced by the storm-surge barrier will alter the meiofauna community structure. As a result meiofauna will become more important in terms of density and biomass, mainly due to increasing numbers of nematodes, increasing bioturbation, nutrient mineralisation and sustaining bacterial growth. A general decrease in meiofauna diversity is predicted. The number of copepods is expected to decrease and interstitial species will be replaced by epibenthic species, the latter being more important in terms of biomass and as food for the epibenthic macrofauna and fishes.  相似文献

The new species Tinocladia sanrikuensis sp. nov. H.Kawai, K.Takeuchi & T.Hanyuda (Ectocarpales s.l., Phaeophyceae) is described from the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region, northern Japan based on morphology and DNA sequences. The species is a spring–summer annual growing on lower intertidal to upper subtidal rocks and cobbles on relatively protected sites. T. sanrikuensis has a slimy, cylindrical, multiaxial erect thallus, slightly hollow when fully developed, branching once to twice, and resembles T. crassa in gross morphology. The erect thalli are composed of a dense medullary layer, long subcortical filaments, and assimilatory filaments of 11–35 cells, up to 425 μm long and curved in the upper portion. Unilocular zoidangia are formed on the basal part of assimilatory filaments. The species is genetically most closely related to T. crassa and has the same basic thallus structures but differs in having thinner and longer assimilatory filaments. DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cox1 and cox3, chloroplast atpB, psaA, psbA and rbcL genes support the distinctness of this species.  相似文献

Algal communities at Gouqi Island in the Zhoushan archipelago, China   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The kelp bed of Gouqi Island lies in the east of the East China Sea, in the Shengsi Archipelago. It is a key component of the island-reef ecosystem. This study evaluated kelp beds on intertidal and subtidal zones from 2004 to 2006. We evaluated seasonal variations in the community structure of macroalgae, and their relationship with water temperature, nitrogen and phytoplankton. The Gouqi Island kelp bed consists mainly of species of Sargassum. Sargassum horneri was the dominant species in subtidal zones, representing 90% of the total biomass. The dominant species in intertidal zones were S. fusiforme, S. horneri, S. thunbergii and Undaria pinnatifida. Fifty-four phytoplankton species were found in the Gouqi Island kelp bed, of which 51 species were found inside the kelp beds, 43 species outside the kelp beds, and 40 species were present both inside and outside the kelp beds. Diatoms were dominant both inside and outside the kelp beds. Except in winter, Skeletonema costatum was dominant, and its abundance in autumn was over 98% of the total abundance. Water temperature was found to be the primary factor influencing the growth of S. horneri in the Gouqi Island kelp bed. S. horneri grew slowly from November to March, and rapidly from March to June. The upper temperature limit for growth of S. horneri was about 18°C. Higher water temperatures can result in a decline in the kelp bed. Nitrogen seemed to be a limiting factor for macroalgal growth. This was particularly true for S. horneri and phytoplankton. Since nitrate is the primary nutrient for S. horneri, its absorption by S. horneri resulted in seasonal changes of nitrate in the ecosystem.  相似文献

Empty habitat in coastal sediments for populations of macrozoobenthos   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Species with wide dispersal are expected to have little empty habitat. This was tested by analysing habitat use in the Wadden Sea near the island of Sylt (North Sea). Sampling covered 222 intertidal sites spread across the K?nigshafen tidal flats (4.5 km2, mapping approach conducted once) and 270 subtidal sites along 12 km of a tidal channel system (stratified random sampling in spring and autumn). For any single species, 'suitable habitat' was extrapolated from the ranges of water depth and sediment composition present at the ten sites with the highest frequency or abundance of the species. On average, macrobenthic species actually used less than half of the suitable sites within the scale of local populations; this was far less than expected from a lognormal distribution. In the subtidal, abundance of most species changed between the two sampling seasons. A 50% increase in overall abundance was accompanied by a decrease in empty habitat of only about 25%. Thus, a doubling of abundances would not fill the empty space but just of half of it. The polychaete Scoloplos armiger was an exception in occupying almost all of its suitable habitat in the intertidal and subtidal sediments. A distinct patch of high species richness occurred where flood waters persistently form a large gyre which may enhance larval settlement. We suggest that limitations to larval settlement and/or juvenile survival primarily cause the extent of the observed habitat emptiness. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Algal bloom phenomenon was defined as “the rapid growth of one or more phytoplankton species which leads to a rapid increase in the biomass of phytoplankton”, yet most estimates of temporal coherence are based on yearly or monthly sampling frequencies and little is known of how synchrony varies among phytoplankton or of the causes of temporal coherence during spring algal bloom. In this study, data of chlorophyll a and related environmental parameters were weekly gathered at 15 sampling sites in Xiangxi Bay of Three‐Gorges Reservoir (TGR, China) to evaluate patterns of temporal coherence for phytoplankton during spring bloom and test if spatial heterogeneity of nutrient and inorganic suspended particles within a single ecosystem influences synchrony of spring phytoplankton dynamics. There is a clear spatial and temporal variation in chlorophyll a across Xiangxi Bay. The degree of temporal coherence for chlorophyll a between pairs of sites located in Xiangxi Bay ranged from –0.367 to 0.952 with mean and median values of 0.349 and 0.321, respectively. Low levels of temporal coherence were often detected among the three stretches of the bay (Down reach, middle reach and upper reach), while high levels of temporal coherence were often found within the same reach of the bay. The relative difference of DIN between pair sites was the strong predictor of temporal coherence for chlorophyll a in down and middle reach of the bay, while the relative difference in Anorganic Suspended Solids was the important factor regulating temporal coherence in middle and upper reach. Contrary to many studies, these results illustrate that, in a small geographic area (a single reservoir bay of approximately 25 km), spatial heterogeneity influence synchrony of phytoplankton dynamics during spring bloom and local processes may override the effects of regional processes or dispersal. The composition of the early stages of intertidal and subtidal fouling assemblages in Comodoro Rivadavia harbour (Argentina, 45°52′ S, 67°28′ W) and the influence of shore level and season on their structure were analysed. At the beginning of each season, stones were glued to the substratum with epoxy putty and distributed along 4 vertical transects at intervals of 20 m, at 3 levels: upper intertidal, middle intertidal, and subtidal. Substrata remained in the field for 84–100 days. A total of 48 samples (4 seasons × 3 levels × 4 replicates) were analysed. Species richness increased with depth, with 6 taxa in the upper intertidal, 23 in the middle intertidal and 31 in the subtidal. Seasonal differences in richness were less distinct. Green, red and brown algae were the dominant groups. Invertebrates were mainly represented by filter-feeding, sessile organisms, such as cheilostome bryozoans, spirorbid polychaetes and acorn barnacles. The barnacle Balanus glandula and the bryozoan Cryptosula pallasiana were the only non-indigenous species found in this study. Highly significant differences in structure among shore levels and seasons were evidenced by a two-way ANOSIM test. The upper intertidal is characterized by the filamentous green algae Urospora penicilliformis and Ulothrix flacca. The barnacle Balanus glandula is the most abundant species in the middle intertidal. The subtidal is defined mainly by the presence of the spirorbid polychaetes Paralaeospira levinseni and Romanchella perrieri, and the keyhole limpet Fissurella radiosa. Ordination of samples by season was less clear than by shore level.  相似文献

At present, no efficient technique is available for cleaning up soils which are highly polluted by heavy metals. Limiting the movement of pollutants out of the contaminated area by creating a dense and persistent plant cover appears to be the more reasonable approach. In this context, phytostabilization is a technique that uses metallicolous plants to revegetate highly polluted soils. This paper presents the results of an experiment performed in situ using metallicolous ecotypes of four plant species native to the Mediterranean French region, and grown in different combinations at a polluted site over two years. The soils were highly polluted with zinc, cadmium and lead. The aim was to find the best species mixture in terms of cover, biomass and duration. The four species used were the biennial legume Anthyllis vulneraria, two perennial grasses, Festuca arvernensis and Koeleria vallesiana, and the perennial forb Armeria arenaria. Mixtures which included A. vulneraria, and especially when in combination with F. arvernensis, showed the highest values of cover and biomass. After flowering, the biennial individuals of A. vulneraria disappeared but subsequent germination and survival of seedlings occurred abundantly under the two grasses. Mixtures with A. arenaria showed the lowest values of cover and biomass. Soil nitrogen increased in the plots with A. vulneraria as well as the concentration of essential nutrients (N P K) in the aerial parts of the two grasses. In contrast, the concentration of metals (Zn Pb Cd) decreased in the aboveground biomass of the latter in the same plots. These results show that reciprocal facilitation effects can act in heavy metal polluted environments, and that phytostabilization efforts in the Mediterranean region can be improved by using mixtures including local metallicolous legume and grass species.  相似文献

Abstract. Vascular epiphytes were studied in forests at altitudes from 720 to 2370 m on the Atlantic slope of central Veracruz, Mexico. The biomass of all trees of each species > 10 cm diameter at breast height within plots between 625 and 1500 m2 was estimated. The number of species per plot ranged between 22 and 53, and biomass between 9 and 249 g dry weight/m2. The highest values, both of species and biomass, were found at an intermediate altitude (1430 m). Habitat diversity may contribute to epiphyte diversity in humid forests, but the importance of this effect could not be distinguished from the influence of climate. A remarkably high number of bromeliads and orchids grew in relatively dry forests at low altitudes. In wet upper montane forests, bromeliads were replaced by ferns, while orchids were numerous at all sites, except for a pine forest. The number of epiphytic species and their biomass on a tree of a given site were closely related to tree size. According to Canonical Correspondence Analysis, the factor determining the composition of the epiphytic vegetation of a tree was altitude and to some extent tree size, whereas tree species had practically no influence. The only trees which had an evidently negative effect on epiphytes were pines, which were particularly hostile to orchids and to a lesser degree to ferns, and Bursera simaruba, which generally had few epiphytes due to its smooth and defoliating bark.  相似文献

The potential driving force(s) of the vertical distribution of subtidal barnacle Balanus trigonus Darwin were investigated using both field and laboratory experiments. Early juveniles (∼24 h old) placed in intertidal [∼0.5 m above mean low water level (MLWL)] and subtidal (∼3 m below MLWL) habitats survived equally well, indicating that the intertidal absence of B. trigonus in Hong Kong waters was not determined by differential mortality. However, enhanced attachment of cyprids in subtidal habitats indicated the importance of differential larval choice in determining their vertical distribution. In the laboratory, cyprids preferred to attach in response to subtidal microbial films, which may implicate microbial films as a primary cue in driving the adult vertical distribution. Microbial films developed in these two habitats differed in their biomass (=total organic carbon), abundance of bacteria and diatoms (determined by fluorescence microscopy), and bacterial diversity (determined by DNA fingerprinting analysis). For example, 6-day films in subtidal habitat had a significantly higher biomass than in films from intertidal habitat (P<0.05). There was no difference in the biomass of films from these two habitats in 9-day films (P>0.05); however, bacterial abundance was greater in subtidal films than in intertidal films, irrespective of the age of the film, although there was no difference in diatom abundance in films from these two habitats. Neither the abundance of bacteria and diatoms nor the biomass correlated with the attachment preferences of cyprids. This study has not provided any data to prove the existence of inductive and inhibitive (to cyprid attachment) bacterial species in subtidal and intertidal films, respectively; however, results indicate that bacterial community provided qualitative information that might explain the preferential attachment of B. trigonus cyprids in subtidal habitat.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in numbers and biomass and breeding of 28 species ofScarabaeidae-Scarabaeinae andGeotrupidae were studied at 2 temperate sites and 2 mediterranean sites in southern France in 1978 and 1979, using cattle-dung baited pitfall traps. Maximum dung burial occurred when females were parous and ovipositiong (i.e. during spring at the mediterranean sites and summer at the temperate sites). Using biomass as a measure of dung burial the most important spring active beetles at the mediterranean sites were:Budas bison, B. bubalus, Scarabaeus laticollis, Onthophagus lemur andCopris hispanus, and at the temperate sites:C. lunaris, O. vacca, andO. ovatus. These results confirmed the previous choice ofC. hispanus, C. lunaris, B. bison andO. vacca for introduction into Australia. In addition it is suggested thatB. bubalus, S. laticollis andO. lemur be considered for introduction into mediterranean areas of south western Australia to complement those species already introduced for bush fly control.   相似文献

Benthic oligochaetes were sampled on three occasions (June, August and October 1992) in the upper (0–10 cm) and hyporheic (35–45 cm depths) sediments at five sites of the River Moselle, from upstream of the town of Epinal to Velle-sur-Moselle. The first site (upstream from Epinal) is considered as unpolluted and the four remaining sites are polluted by industrial effluents. The most polluted stations were generally dominated by the pollution tolerant taxon Limnodrilus. Numbers of individuals of this taxon decreased at the less polluted last site in recovery zone, and were also scarce in the first unpolluted site. It is noteworthy that these tendencies were observed in both superficial and hyporheic substrates and to the greatest degree in hyporheic ones. At the unpolluted site, the hyporheic habitat is dominated by the groundwater species Propappus volki, Pristina spp., Pristinella spp. At the less polluted site (last site), the deep sediments are dominated by groundwater species and the Tubificidae without hair setae decrease from June to October. As a result of water exchange between superficial and subterranean waters, superficial substrates of the first and the last stations tend to be colonised by a high proportion of hyporheic species that suggests that flow is primarily from subterranean to superficial waters. The contrary is the case at other polluted stations which are characterised by the invasion of hyporheic substrates by the pollution tolerant superficial taxa Limnodrilus. This suggests that water flows from the river to the deeper groundwater. These two stations are located near drinking water plants which utilise groundwater, thus increasing the vulnerability of groundwater to surface contaminants.  相似文献
