By measuring the direct and indirect fitness costs and benefits of sexual interactions, the feasibility of alternate explanations for polyandry can be experimentally assessed. This approach becomes more complicated when the relative magnitude of the costs and/or benefits associated with multiple mating (i.e., remating with different males) vary with female condition, as this may influence the strength and direction of sexual selection. Here, using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, we test whether the indirect benefits that a nonvirgin female gains by remating (“trading‐up”) are influenced by her condition (body size). We found that remating by small‐bodied, low‐fecundity females resulted in the production of daughters of relatively higher fecundity, whereas the opposite pattern was observed for large‐bodied females. In contrast, remating had no measurable effect on the relative reproductive success of sons from dams of either body size. These results are consistent with a hypothesis based on sexually antagonistic genetic variation. The implications of these results to our understanding of the evolution and consequences of polyandry are discussed.  相似文献

To give valid informed consent to participate in clinical research, potential participants should understand the risks, potential benefits, procedures, and alternatives. Potential participants also should understand that they are being invited to participate in research. Yet it is unclear what potential participants need to understand to satisfy this particular requirement. As a result, it is unclear what additional information investigators should disclose about the research; and it is also unclear when failures of understanding in this respect undermine the validity of potential participants' informed consent. An analysis of individuals' interests suggests that potential participants need to understand three additional facts to understand that they are being invited to participate in research: 1) research contribution : those who enroll in the study will be contributing to a project designed to gather generalizable knowledge to benefit others in the future; 2) research relationship : the investigators will rely on participants' efforts to gather the generalizable knowledge to benefit others; and 3) research impact : the extent to which participating in the study will alter what participants do and what happens to them.  相似文献

The frequency of colony formation in monolayers of cultured frog cell lines treated with puromycin was compared in (a) haploid and heteroploid lines and (b) mutagen-treated and nontreated haploid lines. Evidence that resistant colonies result from gene mutation was negative, since the colony frequency is independent of both ploidy and mutagen treatment. A study of five frog cell lines showed that colony formation in puromycin depends on (a) the concentration of puromycin, (b) preselection of the population with puromycin, and, particularly, (c) the capacity of the treated population to survive some exposure to puromycin. One haploid and one heteroploid strain showing stable resistance to puromycin have been isolated; comparison of those variants with sensitive populations has shown that resistance to puromycin is correlated with the cells' capacity to exclude the drug. The evidence for different levels of membrane permeability, combined with evidence for many degrees of resistance among and within cell populations, suggests a model of self-determining membrane units. The evolution of a resistant phenotype may result from changes in the proportion of specific units in the membrane population.  相似文献

The Bateman principle, which holds that oocytes are the limiting gamete in reproduction, is violated in a variety of species. Self-fertilizing hermaphrodites of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans provide an example of a system in which sperm number limits lifetime reproductive output, in this species due to the protandrous nature of sperm production that in turn delays the onset of fertilization. This reproductive delay forms the basis of a trade-off between generation time and total fecundity, in which sperm number plays a pivotal role. I use an age-structured population model to describe the number of sperm that maximize fitness, given larval development time and rates of gamete production. The model predicts the evolution of sperm numbers that are consistent with empirical data for C. elegans provided that precocious larval sperm production is taken into account. Several testable hypotheses follow from the model regarding how natural selection and environmental variation may influence patterns of sperm production among populations or species with a similar mode of reproduction.  相似文献

Cells of the mature root exhibit arrest within the G1 and G2 periods of the mitotic cycle. The number of cells arrested with a 2C or 4C DNA amount in mature tissue was compared with that in meristems of excised primary root tips deprived of carbohydrate. Results from four plant species are described. Cells in mature tissue of seedling roots of Vicia and Pisum exhibited arrest predominately at the 4C while those of Triticum and Helianthus arrested preponderantly at the 2C DNA level. The proportion of cells arrested at the 2C and 4C levels in mature root tissue was specific for each species tested. In each species the cycle stage where most cells arrested was the same in carbohydrate-deficient root meristems as in mature root tissue; consequently, most meristematic cells are preconditioned or predetermined to arrest in a specific mitotic period. A test system was developed in Pisum in which the predominant period of arrest was altered by the removal of the cotyledons. The predominant arrest period changed from 4C to 2C in both mature root tissue and carbohydrate-deficient root meristems with cotyledon removal and indicated that mature root cells are preconditioned while meristematic as to where they will eventually arrest in the mitotic cycle.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Whales, dolphins and porpoises, 80 species of entirely aquatic mammals, constitute the order Cetacea. In the early Eocene, about 55 to 60 million years ago according to paleontologists, distant ancestors of modern cetaceans left land for aquatic life. Cetaceans are diverse; average adult size of cetacean species varies by 1000 to 2000 times. Small and large species occupy all oceans from the equator to the polar seas, some forms inhabit rivers and four species live only in fresh water.

Cetaceans are born in water and spend their entire lives in the aquatic medium. There is a great gap in knowledge about hearing in most cetacean species and especially about how noise and high-intensity sound may affect all cetaceans and other mammals underwater. Studies of temporary threshold shift (TTS) and occupational noise exposure in human divers suggest a cautious approach to cetacean noise exposure until data on cetacean TTS can give us some idea of the dynamic range of cetacean ears.  相似文献

Greenbeard genes identify copies of themselves in other individuals and cause their bearer to behave nepotistically toward those individuals. Hence, they can be favored by kin selection, irrespective of the degree of genealogical relationship between social partners. Although greenbeards were initially developed as a thought experiment, a number of recent discoveries of greenbeard alleles in real populations have led to a resurgence of interest in their evolutionary dynamics and consequences. One issue over which there has been disagreement is whether greenbeards lead to intragenomic conflict. Here, to clarify the "outlaw" status of greenbeards, we develop population genetic models that formally examine selection of greenbeard phenotypes under the control of different loci. We find that, in many cases, greenbeards are not outlaws because selection for or against the greenbeard phenotype is the same across all loci. In contrast, when social interactions are between genealogical kin, we find that greenbeards can be outlaws because different genes can be selected in different directions. Hence, the outlaw status of greenbeard genes crucially depends upon the particular biological details. We also clarify whether greenbeards are favored due to direct or indirect fitness effects and address the relationship of the greenbeard effect to sexual antagonism and reciprocity.  相似文献

In this paper I examine the question of whether ethicists are moral experts. I call people moral experts if their moral judgments are correct with high probability and for the right reasons. I defend three theses, while developing a version of the coherence theory of moral justification based on the differences between moral and nonmoral experience: The answer to the question of whether there are moral experts depends on the answer to the question of how to justify moral judgments. Deductivism and the coherence theory both provide some support for the opinion that moral experts exist in some way. I maintain – within the framework of a certain kind of coherence theory – that moral philosophers are ‘semi‐experts’.  相似文献

Purdy explores the argument that women's rights to control their bodies should be subordinated to the welfare of their fetuses. She gives examples ofinstances where women's decisions about pregnancy and childbirth have been overridden by physicians and judges. She examines the nature of the mother fetus relationship, the social context of the current conflict between maternal and fetal rights, and the extent of a woman's legally enforceable duty to her fetus. Purdy acknowledges that women may owe a reasonable duty to their fetuses to try to prevent disease or handicap. However, given the uncertainties of modern medicine, the value-laden nature of many physicians' decisions, and the lack of adequate adequate prenatal care, women should not be held responsible for situations that are due largely to society's shortcomings. Purdy concludes that it is unjust to use the law to coerce women into accepting medical advice.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) increasingly has been used to analyse “receptor” function, either by using purified proteins (“molecular recognition microscopy”) or, more recently, in situ in living cells. The latter approach has been enabled by the use of a modified commercial AFM, linked to a confocal microscope, which has allowed adhesion forces between ligands and receptors in cells to be measured and mapped, and downstream cellular responses analysed. We review the application of AFM to cell biology and, in particular, to the study of ligand–receptor interactions and draw examples from our own work and that of others to show the utility of AFM, including for the exploration of cell surface functionalities. We also identify shortcomings of AFM in comparison to “standard” methods, such as receptor auto-radiography or immuno-detection, that are widely applied in cell biology and pharmacological analysis.  相似文献

Physiological traits that control the uptake of carbon dioxide and loss of water are key determinants of plant growth and reproduction. Variation in these traits is often correlated with environmental gradients of water, light, and nutrients, suggesting that natural selection is the primary evolutionary mechanism responsible for physiological diversification. Responses to selection, however, can be constrained by the amount of standing genetic variation for physiological traits and genetic correlations between these traits. To examine the potential for constraint on adaptive evolution, we estimated the quantitative genetic basis of physiological trait variation in one population of each of two closely related species (Lobelia siphilitica and L. cardinalis). Restricted maximum likelihood analyses of greenhouse-grown half-sib families were used to estimate genetic variances and covariances for seven traits associated with carbon and water relations. We detected significant genetic variation for all traits in L. siphilitica, suggesting that carbon-gain and water-use traits could evolve in response to natural selection in this population. In particular, narrow-sense heritabilities for photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), and water-use efficiency (WUE) in our L. siphilitica population were high relative to previous studies in other species. Although there was significant narrow-sense heritability for A in L. cardinalis, we detected little genetic variation for traits associated with water use (gs and WUE), suggesting that our population of this species may be unable to adapt to drier environments. Despite being tightly linked functionally, the genetic correlation between A and gs was not strong and significant in either population. Therefore, our L. siphilitica population would not be genetically constrained from evolving high A (and thus fixing more carbon for growth and reproduction) while also decreasing gs to limit water loss. However, a significant negative genetic correlation existed between WUE and plant size in L. siphilitica, suggesting that high WUE may be negatively associated with high fecundity. In contrast, our results suggest that any constraints on the evolution of photosynthetic and stomatal traits of L. cardinalis are caused primarily by a lack of genetic variation, rather than by genetic correlations between these functionally related traits.  相似文献

Inducible defenses of prey and inducible offenses of predators are drastic phenotypic changes activated by the interaction between a prey and predator. Inducible defenses occur in many taxa and occur more frequently than inducible offenses. Recent empirical studies have reported reciprocal phenotypic changes in both predator and prey. Here, we model the coevolution of inducible plasticity in both prey and predator, and examine how the evolutionary dynamics of inducible plasticity affect the population dynamics of a predator-prey system. Under a broad range of parameter values, the proportion of predators with an offensive phenotype is smaller than the proportion of prey with a defensive phenotype, and the offense level is relatively lower than the defense level at evolutionary end points. Our model also predicts that inducible plasticity evolves in both species when predation success depends sensitively on the difference in the inducible trait value between the two species. Reciprocal phenotypic plasticity may be widespread in nature but may have been overlooked by field studies because offensive phenotypes are rare and inconspicuous.  相似文献

Wormy mice in a hybrid zone have been interpreted as evidence of low hybrid fitness, such that parasites contribute to species separation. However, because of its natural heterogeneity, observations of parasite load must be numerous with good field area coverage. We sampled 689 mice from 107 localities across the Bavaria-Bohemia region of the European house mouse hybrid zone and calculated their hybrid indices using 1401 diagnostic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We tested whether hybrids have greater or lesser diversity and load of parasite helminths than additive expectations, performing load analyses on the four most common taxa. We found hybrids have significantly reduced diversity and load of each of the commonest helminths; rarer helminths further support reduced load. Although within-locality comparisons have little power, randomization tests show the repeated pattern is unlikely to be due to local parasite heterogeneity, and simulations show a patch of low parasite diversity is unlikely to fall by chance just so in the field area, such that it produces the observed effects. Our data therefore contradict the idea that helminths reduce hybrid fitness through increased load. We discuss a vicariant Red Queen model that implies immune genes tracking parasites will escape Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibilities, generating hybrid variants untargeted by parasites.  相似文献
