Direct sexual selection via mutual mate choice can result in both sexes showing conspicuous traits. We experimentally tested whether this hypothesis can explain tail length in the bearded tit (Panurus biarmicus). In this species, both sexes have a long, graduated tail. Males have, however, a longer tail than females, suggesting perhaps that females are choosier than males in selecting mates. We used two choice set‐ups for each sex: shortened vs. control tail individuals and elongated vs. control tail individuals. We found that direct sexual selection seems to operate differently in the two sexes. In both set‐ups, females spent more time with the male with the longest tail, and they also showed sexual display behaviour only towards these males. Males spent more time with control than with short‐tailed females, but they did not discriminate between control and long‐tailed females. Moreover, males displayed preference towards both short‐ and long‐tailed females. Thus, females preferred long‐tailed males, whereas males did not always prefer long‐tailed females. Our study suggests that mutual mate choice has played a role in the evolution of long tails in bearded tits. It also suggests that the sexual dimorphism in tail length has evolved because mate choice exerts a stronger sexual selection pressure on males than on females.  相似文献

Studies of sexual selection have focused mainly on dimorphic and/or polygynous species, where males, typically possess more exaggerated secondary sexual characters. However in many species, receiving far less attention, the expression of ornamental traits by females matches that in males. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain sexual monomorphism, including mutual mate choice, genetic correlation, weak sexual selection and sexual indistinguishability. The sexual indistinguishability hypothesis suggests that sexual monomorphism is an adaption to avoid competition in monogamous flock‐living species. Based on measurements of museum skins and domesticated birds in Europe, the Australian long‐tailed finch was classified as a sexually monomorphic species, providing the best empirical support for the sexual indistinguishability hypothesis. Using both domestic and wild long‐tailed finches, we have re‐evaluated the extent to which the sexes are really indistinguishable. Morphological measurements of wing, tail, tail streamers, tarsus, bill and patch size, and colour spectrometric measurements of the yellow upper mandible and grey crown, were compared between the sexes. While the sexes are similar, males and females nonetheless differed in seven of ten traits in wild populations. In domestic populations, the sexes differed to a lesser extent but were still significantly different at three of ten traits, and discriminant analysis showed that 92% of wild individuals and 89% of domestic individuals could reliably be sexed based on just these morphological traits. Contrary to previous work, this study demonstrates that wild long‐tailed finches are sexually dimorphic, and that the similarity between males and females in this species cannot be explained by the sexual indistinguishability hypothesis.  相似文献

In the posterior salivary duct and gland of Octopus vulgaris and of Eledone cirrhosa, the duct secretory nerve trunks and their ramifications in the gland tubules include many fibres that incorporate labelled serotonin. However, there are also unlabelled secretory fibres, which cannot be discriminated from incorporating fibres on morphological grounds. Neuroglandular junctions are not apparently established by incorporating fibres. In the duct, the motor nerve trunks contain a small number of labelled fibres, and nerve bundles supplying the duct muscle contain, in variable proportions, serotonin incorporating fibres. Both labelled and unlabelled nerve fibres reach the duct muscle fibres, but neuromuscular junctions involve only unlabelled presynaptic fibres. The nerve fibres which join the gland muscle are usually unlabelled, and the small quota of incorporating fibres in the motor trunks apparently supply only duct tissues. Both secretory and motor trunks, originating from different ganglia, can be considered to contain heterogeneous fibres, releasing different neurotransmitters at the terminals. Twenty‐six polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated from (AC)n and (AG)n microsatellite‐enhanced genomic libraries of the gray, short‐tailed opossum Monodelphis domestica. All 26 loci showed high allelic diversity, with allele numbers ranging from five to 11 in a subset of 35 animals. Normal Mendelian inheritance was confirmed for 24 loci by analysing allelic segregation in 10, two‐generation, families. Non‐amplifying (null) alleles were detected at two loci, which we recommend be used only if pedigree data are available. We conclude that all of these microsatellite markers would be useful for quantitative trait locus mapping and population genetic studies.  相似文献

The present results give evidence by using cytochemical markers of motor end-plates (ChE, AchR) and ultrastructural techniques that the Levator ani (LA) muscle is also present in adult females: it is composed of differentiated and innervated fibres. A significant difference, both on the number of fibres per muscle (n) and on their average cross-sectional area (acsa), was observed between sexes:-male: n = 5300 +/- 687, acsa: 522 +/- 68.6 microns 2;-female: n = 565 +/- 246.9, acsa: 68 +/- 8.6 microns 2. These results suggest that testosterone could control, at least partially, the number and the diameter of muscle fibres during development.  相似文献

We tested mutation accumulation hypothesis for the evolution of senescence using short‐lived and long‐lived populations of the seed‐feeding beetle, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), obtained by selection on early‐ and late‐life for many generations. The expected consequence of the mutation accumulation hypothesis is that in short‐lived populations, where the force of natural selection is the strongest early in life, the late‐life fitness traits should decline due to genetic drift which increases the frequency of mutations with deleterious effects in later adult stages. Since it is unlikely that identical deleterious mutations will increase in several independent populations, hybrid vigor for late‐life fitness is expected in offspring obtained in crosses among populations selected for early‐life fitness traits. We tested longevity of both sexes, female fecundity and male reproductive behavior for hybrid vigor by comparing hybrid and nonhybrid short‐lived populations. Hybrid vigor was confirmed for male virility, mating speed and copulation duration, and longevity of both sexes at late ages. In contrast to males, the results on female fecundity in short‐lived populations did not support mutation accumulation as a genetic mechanism for the evolution of this trait. Contrary to the prediction of this hypothesis, male mating ability indices and female fecundity in long‐lived populations exhibited hybrid vigor at all assayed age classes. We demonstrate that nonhybrid long‐lived populations diverged randomly regarding female and male reproductive fitness, indicating that sexually antagonistic selection, when accompanied with genetic drift for female fecundity and male virility, might be responsible for overriding natural selection in the independently evolving long‐lived populations.  相似文献

The M. pectoralis (pars thoracicus) of pigeons (Columba livia) is comprised of short muscle fibres that do not extend from muscle origin to insertion but overlap ''in-series''. Individual pectoralis motor units are limited in territory to a portion of muscle length and are comprised of either fast twitch, oxidative and glycolytic fibres (FOG) or fast twitch and glycolytic fibres (FG). FOG fibres make up 88 to 90% of the total muscle population and have a mean diameter one-half of that of the relatively large FG fibres. Here we report on the organization of individual fibres identified in six muscle units depleted of glycogen, three comprised of FOG fibres and three comprised of FG fibres. For each motor unit, fibre counts revealed unequal numbers of depleted fibres in different unit cross-sections. We traced individual fibres in one unit comprised of FOG fibres and a second comprised of FG fibres. Six fibres from a FOG unit (total length 15.45 mm) ranged from 10.11 to 11.82 mm in length and averaged (± s.d.) 10.74 ± 0.79 mm. All originated bluntly (en mass) from a fascicle near the proximal end of the muscle unit and all terminated intramuscularly. Five of these ended in a taper and one ended bluntly. Fibres coursed on average for 70% of the muscle unit length. Six fibres from a FG unit (total length 34.76 mm) ranged from 8.97 to 18.38 mm in length and averaged 15.32 ± 3.75 mm. All originated bluntly and terminated intramuscularly; one of these ended in a taper and five ended bluntly. Fibres coursed on average for 44% of the muscle unit length. Because fibres of individual muscle units do not extend the whole muscle unit territory, the effective cross-sectional area changes along the motor unit length. These non-uniformities in the distribution of fibres within a muscle unit emphasize that the functional interactions within and between motor units are complex.  相似文献

Tailed acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was studied in three subcellular membrane fractions of mouse skeletal muscle: a fraction enriched in isolated motor endplates (C), an extrasynaptic membrane fraction (A) and a microsomal fraction (S). In the (C) fraction, tailed asymmetric 16S AChE required high salt conditions to be extracted, while in (A) and (S) microsomal membranes, a collagenase sensitive 16S form, was extracted by detergent alone. This apparent “hydrophobic” property suggests that there is a pool of 16S AChE which is probably bound to lipidic membranes. The detergent extractable (DE) 16S AChE was not concentrated in motor endplate-rich regions and differential inhibition of external and internal AChE demonstrated that it could have both intra- and extracellular locations in the adult differentiated muscle fibres.  相似文献

The iliofibularis is a hindlimb muscle used in lizard locomotion that is composed of at least three types of fibres: fast‐twitch‐glycolytic (FG), fast‐twitch‐oxidative‐glycolytic fibre (FOG) and slow‐twitch‐oxidative (SO). The striated skeletal muscle is a highly plastic tissue undergoing phenotypic change in response to activity. The lizard Sceloporus torquatus has sexual differences associated with microhabitat use, which can be reflected in the physiology and anatomy of the muscle, and thus, in our study, we analysed the morphological and contractile characteristics of the iliofibularis muscle (IF) of S. torquatus males and females. We found a larger prevalence of FOG compared with FG and SO fibres in the muscle of both sexes. We also found that males show larger areas of the three types of fibres, develop greater strength but also faster fatigue than females, suggesting that strength is a key functional feature that enables males to perform faster movements (but for shorter periods), associated with the demands of territoriality.  相似文献

In the present study we examined the possibility that striated muscle activity may underlie sexually dimorphic micturition in rats. Micturition dynamics, the gross anatomy of the external urethral sphincter, and the participation of the striated perineal muscles in micturition were compared in urethane-anesthetized adult male and female rats. Bladder contraction characteristics, particularly the magnitude of bladder high-frequency pressure waves during voiding, differed between sexes. Dissections indicated that the sphincter was more extensive and thicker in males than in females. Electromyography showed that in both sexes the sphincter discharged in bursts that correlated with the rising phase of high-frequency bladder pressure oscillations. Regional differences in discharge pattern were seen in the sphincters of males, with the proximal part of the sphincter showing components activated during bladder filling. Bulbospongiosus, ischiocavernosus, and cremaster muscles also were activated during bladder contraction in males. In both sexes transection of the motor branch of the lumbosacral plexus eliminated the bladder high-frequency oscillations and reduced voided volume. Neurectomy did not affect bladder pressure but reduced voiding efficiency by 45% in males. In females the bladder pressure was dramatically decreased, but voiding efficiency only decreased by 24%. Our findings suggest that, in rats, striated perineal muscles contribute to the sexually dimorphic micturition. Activity of the dimorphic perineal muscles may regulate genital and urinary urethra expulsive functions, helping to expel seminal plug and fluids through the long urethra in the male.  相似文献

The black nuptial plumage of the highly polygynous male red‐collared widowbird (Euplectes ardens) comprises a red carotenoid‐based collar patch and a long graduated tail (c. 22 cm). Tail length was the strongest predictor of male mating success in a previous selection analysis, motivating this experimental test of the relative importance of tail plumes in male contest competition and female choice. Males were assigned to either a short (12.5 cm) or control (20 cm) tail manipulation prior to territory establishment. Male contest competition was unaffected by the tail treatments as the shortened‐ and control‐tailed males were equally successful in acquiring territories of similar size and quality. In contrast, however, although the longer‐tailed control males spent less time in flight and courtship displays, they attracted significantly more prospecting and nearly three times as many nesting females to their territories compared to the short‐tailed males. In further support of tail length as the primary mate choice cue, none of the other measured and potential female cues (e.g. body size, collar colorimetrics, territorial behaviours or territory quality) influenced male reproductive success. In addition to potentially increasing detectability (‘signal efficacy’), the long tail is also a likely indicator of male quality (‘signal content’). Despite the higher activities of short‐tailed males, control‐tailed males showed a steeper decline in condition (relative body mass) during the breeding season. Furthermore, both short‐ and control‐tailed residents lost more condition than did the short‐ and control‐treated floaters (males not establishing territories), suggesting an interaction between tail length and the costs of territory acquisition, defence and courtship displays. —The distribution of ChAT (choline acetyltransferase), GAD (glutamate decarboxylase) and acetylcholinesterase in some sensory and motor nerves of the shore crab, Carcinus maenas, has been investigated using micro-assay techniques. ChAT was concentrated in the afferent nerve fibres of the thoracic-coxal muscle receptor as well as in the coxo-basal chordotonal receptor nerve and other leg sensory fibres. GAD was found in leg motor nerves including the promotor and remotor muscle nerves, being undetectable in the sensory nerves. Acetylcholinesterase was found in similar levels in both sensory and motor nerves assayed. Amino acid analysis using a micro-dansylation technique showed that sensory nerves had low GABA levels, whereas the leg nerve including motor fibres had substantially higher GABA concentrations. GAD and GABA were also found in low amounts in the leg promoter mucle, which is consistent with GABA being a neuromuscular transmitter.  相似文献

Plumage colour variation exists among Gyrfalcons throughout their Arctic and sub‐Arctic circumpolar distribution, ranging from white through silver and grey to almost black. Although different colour variants coexist within many populations, a few geographical regions, such as northern Greenland, possess a single variant, suggesting that local environments may influence plumage colour variation. In central‐west Greenland (66.5–67.5°N), where multiple colour variants exist, white male Gyrfalcons fathered significantly earlier clutches than grey males. No significant association was observed between female colour and lay date. However, significantly more offspring were produced by both male and female white Gyrfalcons than by grey variants when controlling for lay date, and silver Gyrfalcons produced an intermediate number of offspring for both sexes. This pattern was further supported by breeding plumage colour pairings. Grey females paired with grey males nested significantly later in the season and produced fewer offspring than those paired with white males, whereas no difference in lay date or offspring number was found between white males paired with white or with grey females. The difference in the number of offspring produced at each nest‐site was also inversely correlated with the distance to the nearest neighbouring nest, and grey males nested in closer proximity to other nests compared with white and silver colour variants. These results suggest that factors associated with territory occupancy and timing of breeding may regulate reproductive success differently between colour variants, with directional selection favouring light‐coloured Gyrfalcons and resulting in earlier lay date and a high frequency of white plumage colour variants in this population. Although gene flow exists between our study population and those further north (>75°N), white Gyrfalcons prevail where the breeding season duration is even shorter, suggesting that nesting chronology in combination with genetic drift may play an important role in influencing plumage colour polymorphism among Gyrfalcon populations.  相似文献

Six extraocular muscles of the grass snake, Natrix natrix L. together with their motor end plates were examined in the light and electron microscope, and the measurements of the diameter of muscle fibres and the area of their motor end plates were performed. Morphologically, two types of muscle fibres: tonic and red phase ones were distinguished. The former fibres, 2,3 to 14,5 mum in diameter possess single or multiple (up to five on a single fibre) "en grappe" motor end plates, without postsynaptic junctional folds. The latter fibres, 10...40 mum in diameter have single, "en plaque" motor end plates, with numerous postsynaptic junctional infoldings. The morphological features of muscle fibres and motor end plates as well as the correlation between the diameter of muscle fibres and the area of motor end plates are discussed.  相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) implies correlated differences in energetic requirements and feeding opportunities, such that sexes will face different trade‐offs in habitat selection. In seasonal migrants, this could result in a differential spatial distribution across the wintering range. To identify the ecological causes of sexual spatial segregation, we studied a sexually dimorphic shorebird, the bar‐tailed godwit Limosa lapponica, in which females have a larger body and a longer bill than males. With respect to the trade‐offs that these migratory shorebirds experience in their choice of wintering area, northern and colder wintering sites have the benefit of being closer to the Arctic breeding grounds. According to Bergmann's rule, the larger females should incur lower energetic costs per unit of body mass over males, helping them to winter in the cold. However, as the sexes have rather different bill lengths, differences in sex‐specific wintering sites could also be due to the vertical distribution of their buried prey, that is, resource partitioning. Here, in a comparison between six main intertidal wintering areas across the entire winter range of the lapponica subspecies in northwest Europe, we show that the percentage of females between sites was not correlated with the cost of wintering, but was positively correlated with the biomass in the bottom layer and negatively with the biomass in the top layer. We conclude that resource partitioning, rather than relative expenditure advantages, best explains the differential spatial distribution of male and female bar‐tailed godwits across northwest Europe.  相似文献

Structure and function are reviewed in the masticatory muscles and in the muscles of the lower face and tongue. The enormous strength of jaw closure is in large part due to the pinnated arrangement of the muscle fibres in the masseter. This muscle, like other masticatory muscles, is unusual in that the cell bodies of the muscle spindle afferents lie in the brain stem rather than in an external ganglion; spindles are absent in the lower facial muscles. Although few data are available, the numbers of motor units in the masticatory muscles, and probably in the lower facial muscles also, appear to he much greater than in limb muscles. The motor units in the facial and tongue muscles are largely composed of histochemical type II (‘fast-twitch’) fibres, but in the masticatory muscles there are substantial numbers of fibres intermediate between type I (‘slow twitch’) and type II, and fibre type grouping is present. In comparison with limb muscles, there is little information on ageing changes in oro-facial muscles. The masticatory muscles do, however, show some atrophy and loss of X-ray density, while motor unit twitches are prolonged. Strength is reduced in the tongue and masticatory muscles. It is known that limb muscle properties are largely governed by their innervation, both through the pattern and amount of impulse activity, and the delivery of trophic messengers; the situation for oro-facial muscles is unclear. The structural and functional differences between the two types of muscle indicate the need for conducting ageing studies on the oro-facial muscles, rather than relying on extrapolations from limb muscles.  相似文献

During their embryogenesis, marsupials develop a unique structure, the shoulder arch, which provides the structural and muscle‐attachment support necessary for the newborn's crawl to the teat. One of the most pronounced and important aspects of the shoulder arch is an enlarged coracoid. After marsupial newborns reach the teat, the shoulder arch is remodeled and the coracoid is reduced to a small process on the scapula. Although an understanding of marsupial coracoid reduction has the potential to provide insights into both, marsupial evolution and the origin of mammals, little is known about the morphological and cellular processes controlling this process. To remedy this situation, this study examined the morphological and cellular mechanisms behind coracoid reduction in the gray short‐tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica. A quantitative, morphometric study of shoulder girdle development revealed that the coracoid is reduced in size relative to other aspects of the shoulder girdle by growing at a slower rate. Using a series of molecular assays for cell death, no evidence was found for programmed cell death playing a role in the reduction of coracoid size in marsupials (in contrast to hypotheses of previous researchers). Although it is likely the case that coracoid growth is reduced through a relatively lower rate of cellular proliferation, differences in proliferative rates in the coracoid and scapula were not great enough to be quantified using standard molecular assays. The presence of two electrophoretically and structurally distinguishable forms of ferritin (“fast” and “slow”) in cardiac and skeletal muscle (diaphragm) of the rat was confirmed. Although the total amount of cardiac ferritin showed no difference in concentration in male and female rats, the distribution between the fast and slow species was remarkedly different in the two sexes, the fast form predominating in the cardiac muscle and diaphragm of the female. In agreement with this, the rates of synthesis and of degradation of the fast species were greater in teh female, while the opposite obtained for the male. Iron administration stimulated synthesis of each ferritin species in the cardiac muscle and diaphragm of both sexes. Induction of cardiac connective tissue hypertrophy with isoproterenol inverted the ratio of slow to fast ferritin in female rats, while iron adminsitration along with isoproterenol restored this to normal. It is concluded that the metabolism of ferritin in cardiac and skeletal muscle is sensitive both to sexual status and to iron administration.  相似文献

A systematic survey of motor innervation in the myotomal muscle fibres in several groups of fishes was conducted to observe the extent of dual innervation, a phenomenon found within those myotomal muscle fibres with terminal innervation. It is concluded that the dually innervated myotomal muscle fibre is a primitive vertebrate feature. Furthermore, it is suggested that this particular form of polyneuronal innervation is retained in the course of neural evolution within the homogeneous white myotomal muscle fibre region in these fish groups in order to insure synchrony of firing during sudden, rapid locomotion. The findings are examined in light of current ideas regarding the direct adrenergic innervation in addition to cholinergic innervation of striated muscle fibres.  相似文献
