To assess their role in photoprotection in the crustacean zooplankton Daphnia spp., activities of the antioxidants catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione transferase (GST) and content of carotenoids (CAR) were studied in 4 Daphniaspecies from a total of 50 populations. Included in the survey were alpine and lowland populations of both pigmented and non-pigmented D. longispina, rock-pool and laboratory clones of D. magna and Arctic populations of the D. pulex/D. middendorffianacomplex. Most of the surveyed populations inhabit shallow ponds, and are thus highly exposed to UV-radiation during the summer. The results are primarily discussed in relation to antioxidants as possible protection against UV-radiation. D. pulex, D. middendorffianaand D. longispinaoccurred both as hyaline and pigmented (carapace melanization) morphs. The most notable inter-species differences were the high activity of CAT in the D. magnalab-clone, the low activity of GST in melanic animals from the D. pulexgroup and the high activity of SOD in D. longispinafrom a lowland humic pond. Contrary to expectations, we found no differences in antioxidant capacity between melanic and non-pigmented alpine D. longispina. Intraspecies variation in antioxidant activities was studied in relation to pond characteristics. Among the alpine populations of D. longispina there was a significant positive correlation between absorbance (300 nm) of the pond water and CAT activity, which could be related to ambient levels of photoinduced hydrogen peroxide production in these small water bodies. The data from this comparative study provide insight in photo-protective mechanisms in cladocera, and constitute a valuable basis for future research on pro-oxidant and antioxidant processes in alpine and arctic freshwater zooplankton.  相似文献

We calibrated four stages of hypodermal retraction and cuticle regeneration with five stages of parthenogenetic egg development in Daphnia. Using the hypodermal retraction stages, we found that epibiotic burden increased with elapsed intermolt time for juvenile, male, and female Daphnia bearing parthenogenetic or ephippial eggs. The rate of increase of burden was similar for adult females of two Daphnia species and for males and females of D. pulex. Rate of increase of burden was similar between juvenile and adult females of D. galeata mendotae and D. pulex.  相似文献

Summary It has been proposed that morphological defenses against predation have demographic costs. We measured the cost of a predator-induced morphological defense, using predaceous phantom midge larvae Chaoborus americanus (Insecta, Diptera) and the prey species Daphnia pulex (Crustacea, Cladocera). The induced defense is a neck tooth (and other pleiotropic structures) developed in juvenile D. pulex in the presence of C. americanus. Laboratory life table experiments, in the absence of predation, indicated the population growth rate of typical D. pulex was 11% to 39% greater than that of D. pulex exposed to C. americanus extract, or C. americanus-conditioned water. The reduction in population growth rate was most frequently associated with an increase in the time between birth and first reproduction. Induced individuals required twenty more hours at 23°C, and twenty five more hours at 20°C, to develop to the age of first reproduction. Under limiting food conditions age-specific survivorship and the number of offspring produced per female by the induced form were reduced relative to the typical form. As a result, the difference in population growth rates among forms was greater at the low food level as indicated by a highly significant food by form interaction effect. In addition to neck teeth and lowered reproductive rates, the offspring of induced form individuals had significantly longer tail-spines (7.2–7.5%), and primiparous adults from the induction treatment were significantly shorter than controls (3–8%).  相似文献

The effects of colonial ecomorphs of the green alga Scenedesmus acutus on growth of Daphnia cucullata and D. pulex were examined. In ecologically relevant densities (up to 200 animals l-1) the relatively small D. cucullata did not induce colony formation in Scenedesmus acutus, whereas the larger congener D. pulex significantly promoted colony formation. Both clearance rate and population growth rate (r) were significantly lower in D. cucullata when fed colonial Scenedesmus then when fed unicellular food. However, for D. pulex no effects of food type were observed. These results show that large Daphnia may influence its food in such a way that smaller congeners and competitors are negatively affected.  相似文献

I examine several hypotheses for competitive dominance among zooplankton using data from 20 studies containing field and laboratory experiments on competition between cladoceran species. In threeDaphnia species from rockpools studied in the laboratory, the largeD. magna was the superior competitor at higher food levels and at 15°, while the smallerD. pulex andD. longispina were dominants at low food levels at 20°.D. pulex usually excludedD. longispina. No single-factor hypothesis gives a satisfying explanation for these results. A review of the literature data suggests that none of the following hypotheses for competitive dominance have sufficient support to be considered general: The size-efficiency hypothesis (supported in 60% of the tests), ther-max hypothesis (68% support), efficiency at low food levels (36% support), and that small species are superior competitors (only 17% support). Competitive ability and susceptibility to predation appear to be positively related (9 out of 10 cases). 76% of the experiments carried out under different environmental conditions showed varying outcomes. Competition between cladocerans should evidently be studied within a multi-factor framework. Since shifts in competitive advantage with environmental changes were common, the competitive exclusion principle may often not apply in zooplankton assemblages. Non-equilibrium coexistence of competitors in a variable environment, i.e. the paradox of the plankton, is a framework worthy of consideration in zooplankton, and possibly also in many other natural communities.  相似文献

Bletia purpurea is the most widespread species in its genus. Morphological variation has been recognized throughout the range of its distribution. In this paper, the morphological variation from 63 populations (583 individuals) ofBletia purpurea is assessed to determine whether more than one species were present. Forty-four quantitative and qualitative characters were examined by univariate analyses and exploratory multivariate analyses. Univariate analyses indicate that quantitative characters such as lateral sepal width, petal. width, lip length, and lip width are significantly different for populations from Acazónica, Mexico. Floral parts in the populations from Acazónica are the smallest among all populations. Qualitative characters such as petals covering the lip midlobe and horizontal lip position are found exclusively in the same populations. We concluded that these populations should be described as a new species,B. riparia. Multivariate analyses indicated that morphological variation among the other populations cannot be ascribed to geographic distribution or ecological factors.  相似文献

Daphnia can alter its vertical position in the water column in response to chemical cues from predators. In this study we tested the hypothesis that a Daphnia pulex clone with little evolutionary exposure to cyanobacteria would move away from patches of cyanobacteria (Anabaena affinis and A. flos-aquae) which contain potent endotoxins. Daphnia was censused at 2 h intervals for 6 h in laboratory columns in which there was a steep vertical gradient of cyanobacteria. Data were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA. Control (no Anabaena) and experimental columns showed no significant differences in Daphnia distributions. Daphnia in experimental columns frequently moved into areas with dense concentrations of Anabaena and stayed there for long periods of time. Our results show that this D. pulex clone does not exhibit a rapid (within 6 h) avoidance response to toxic Anabaena.  相似文献

The role that temperature plays in excluding large daphnid species from subtropical and tropical ponds, and competitive relationships between Daphnia laevis and Daphnia magna, are explored. D. magna, a large temperate species is probably not excluded from subtropical or tropical systems by elevated temperatures. However, D. magna was a poorer competitor, under a restricted set of laboratory conditions, than D. laevis, the only pond dwelling daphnid in subtropical Florida. Competition is proposed as one mechanism that may limit the number of daphnid species in subtropical and tropical ponds and lakes. Reduced environmental fluctuations in subtropical and tropical systems (compared with temperate systems) may allow zooplankton populations to reach an environmental carrying capacity where competition limits the number of similar, coexisting species in a habitat.  相似文献

Understanding nucleotide variation in natural populations has been a subject of great interest for decades. However, many taxonomic groups, especially those with atypical life history attributes remain unstudied, and Drosophila is the only arthropod genus for which DNA polymorphism data are presently abundant. As a result of the recent release of the complete genome sequence and a wide variety of new genomic resources, the Daphnia system is quickly becoming a promising new avenue for expanding our knowledge of nucleotide variation in natural populations. Here, we examine nucleotide variation in six protein-coding loci for Daphnia pulex and its congeners with particular emphasis on D. pulicaria, the closest extant relative of D. pulex. Levels of synonymous intraspecific variation, πs, averaged 0.0136 for species in the Daphnia genus, and are slightly lower than most prior estimates in invertebrates. Tests of neutrality indicated that segregating variation conforms to neutral model expectations for the loci that we examined in most species, while Ka/Ks ratios revealed strong purifying selection. Using a full maximum-likelihood coalescent-based method, the ratio of the recombination rate to the mutation rate (c/u), averaged 0.5255 for species of the Daphnia genus. Lastly, a divergence population-genetics approach was used to investigate gene flow and divergence between D. pulex and D. pulicaria.  相似文献

The effect of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) predation on the population dynamics of the water flea,Daphnia pulex, was examined during 1976 and 1977 in Becker Lake, a small, shallow, productive reservoir in northeastern Arizona.Rainbow trout were size-biased feeders, utilizing daphnids which were 1.3 mm in size or larger. Trout predation uponDaphnia pulex occurred mainly during winter and early spring when their numbers were relatively low but their clutch size high, suggesting that trout selectedDaphnia on the basis of brood pigmentation. By far the greatest proportion ofDaphnia mortality was due to nonpredatory sources, since generally less than 6% could be attributed to trout predation.TheD. pulex population exhibited a bimodal seasonal abundance curve which was attributed to ephippial egg production and trout predation during the winter and poor food quality/quantity during the summer.This work was supported in part by the Arizona Department of Game and Fish. Juvenile Daphnia pulex form neckteeth in reponse to chemicals released by predatory Chaoborus crystallinus larvae. Formation of neckteeth is strongest in the second instar followed by the third instar, whereas only small neckteeth are found in the first and fourth instar of experimental clones. Predation experiments showed that body-size-dependent vulnerability of animals without neckteeth to fourth instar C. crystallinus larvae matched the pattern of neckteeth formation over the four juvenile instars. Predation experiments on D. pulex of the same clone with neckteeth showed that vulnerability to C. crystallinus predation is reduced, and that the induced protection is correlated with the degree of neckteeth formation. The pattern of neckteeth formation in successive instars is probably adaptive, and it can be concluded that neckteeth are formed to different degrees in successive instars as an evolutionary compromise to balance prediation risk and protective costs.  相似文献

Gammarus pulex and Asellus aquaticus generally occupy different zones in rivers; the former occurs in upper reaches but is replaced by the latter in lower reaches. Microdistribution and life-history patterns of G. pulex and A. aquaticus in sympatry and allopatry, were analyzed. Both species exhibited similar patterns of microhabitat selection, with larger individuals associated predominantly with large-sized substratum particles, and juveniles with weed. Coexisting populations of G. pulex and A. aquaticus had similar densities and population dynamics. Within each species, differences in population dynamics of allopatric and sympatric populations were observed. Although variation in population dynamics of G. pulex may be explained in terms of competition between the two species, the evidence is weak and equivocal. Differences in the dynamics of the two A. aquaticus populations were possibly a consequence of coal-mine and organic pollution, reducing the survival of offspring in the allopatric population.  相似文献

As climate regimes shift in many ecosystems worldwide, evolution may be a critical process allowing persistence in rapidly changing environments. Organisms regularly interact with other species, yet whether climate-mediated evolution can occur in the context of species interactions is not well understood. We tested whether a species interaction could modify evolutionary responses to temperature. We demonstrate that predation pressure by Dipteran larvae (Chaoborus americanus) modified the evolutionary response of a freshwater crustacean (Daphnia pulex) to its thermal environment over approximately seven generations in laboratory conditions. Daphnia kept at 21°C evolved higher population growth rates than those kept at 18°C, but only in those populations that were also reared with predators. Furthermore, predator-mediated selection resulted in the evolution of elevated Daphnia thermal plasticity. This laboratory natural selection experiment demonstrates that biotic interactions can modify evolutionary adaptation to temperature. Understanding the interplay between multiple selective forces can improve predictions of ecological and evolutionary responses of organisms to rapid environmental change.  相似文献

Both field observations and enclosure experiments show that juvenile copepods enter Daphnia brood cavities to feed on Daphnia eggs and embryos. The ability to perform such in vivo exploitation is reported for both cyclopoid and calanoid copepods. Copepodites of Acanthocyclops robustus (G.O. Sars) were found to eat eggs in brood cavities of D. magna, D. pulex and D. pulicaria in experimental enclosures rich in algae. Copepodites of Eudiaptomus gracilus (G.O. Sars) were found in brood cavities of D. hyalina in a mesotrophic lake. The copepods' intrusions into brood cavities caused dramatic declines in the clutch size of infested Daphnia, and this predation effect could easily be confused with the effect of severe food limitation.  相似文献

Dikerogammarus villosus, a Ponto-Caspian species, is known to be a particularly successful invader, and is currently the prevailing invasive gammarid in Southern German large waters. Field observations suggest that D. villosus has replaced the native G. pulex and the invasive D. haemobaphes, also a Ponto-Caspian species, in some reaches of the German Danube. Dikerogammarus villosus is also believed to be the reason why Echinogammarus berilloni, a Mediterranean species, and Dikerogammarus bispinosus, a further Ponto-Caspian gammaridean species, could not build significant populations in Southern German rivers. Because intraguild predation (IGP) is regarded as a major force leading to species displacements, we hypothesized that superiority in predation by D. villosus is responsible for the disappearance or limited occurrence of several native and invasive gammarideans in many reaches of Southern German waters. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a series of laboratory IGP experiments with 1:1 combinations in which D. villosus was allowed to prey on other gammarids and vice versa. We also studied the extent of cannibalism within species. Dikerogammarus villosus was a stronger predator than G. pulex and E. berilloni. However, D. villosus was not stronger in predation than its relatives D. haemobaphes and D. bispinosus, although results with the combinations of D. villosus and D. bispinosus were less conclusive, especially in the female–female combination. Cannibalism rate was high in D. haemobaphes compared with other species. We conclude that superiority in IGP experiments could explain the disappearance of G. pulex and the missing or limited occurrence of E. berilloni since the arrival of D. villosus in Southern German rivers. However, the results of IGP experiments do not explain why D. haemobaphes was displaced by D. villosus in many places and why D. bispinosus could not build significant populations in Southern German waters. Possibly specific combinations between mutual predation and cannibalism or factors other than predation could have affected displacement and occurrence patterns of Dikerogammarus species in Southern German waters.  相似文献

Forty nine characters were measured in each of 76 male and 200 female Daphnia including specimens from all eleven taxa described from the genus in Australia, except D. jollyi. Separate multivariate analyses (cluster, principal components and discriminant) of males and females each revealed only five morphological groups in the genus corresponding to the species D. occidentalis, D. lumholtzi, D. cephalata, D. nivalis, and a conglomerate of all other taxa described from the D. carinata complex, D. carinata (sensu lato). Interpretation of the male results was straightforward, but that for females was not because of the occurrence of an environmentally induced seasonal change in morphology (cyclomorphosis) in females. Log transformations of the female data successfully isolated the effects of cyclomorphosis. The seasonal morphs formed two groups which were further differentiated into taxonomic groups.  相似文献

European populations of Daphnia similis Claus have been compared with populations from tropical Asia. Daphnia similoides n. sp. from tropical Asia was described as the sibling species of D. similis. The female has characteristic neonate, postabdomen, head, and ephippium. The male has characteristic rostrum, antennules, and the distalmost part of the postabdomen. The accumulation ofMicrocystis aeruginosa hepatotoxins (microcystin-LR) in the phantom midge larvaChaoborus was studied in a 16 d laboratory experiment. In the cyanobacteria treatment,Chaoborus larvae were fed withDaphnia pulex juveniles which had been feeding for two days on a mixture ofScenedesmus obtusiusculus and toxicMicrocystis aeruginosa. In the control treatment theChaoborus larvae were offeredD. pulex raised onScenedesmus only. An HPLC analysis failed to detect any cyanobacteria toxin in theChaoborus larvae, indicating that the toxin was metabolized or excreted byD. pulex andChaoborus. There was a statistically significant increase in mortality of larvae in the cyanobacteria treatment, but no difference between treatments in pupation success ofChaoborus was observed.  相似文献
