The abundance and cellular location of Fe-containing superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) in trichomes of Nodularia , Aphanizomenon and Anabaena collected from various depths in the Baltic Sea, and in trichomes of a cultured Nodularia strain, BC Nod-9427, isolated from the Baltic Sea, was examined by immunogold labelling. For trichomes collected from natural populations the areal concentration of Fe-SOD labelling decreased with depth: trichomes collected from surface accumulations had between 8 and 11 gold particles μm−2 whereas trichomes collected from a depth of 18 m were unlabelled. When trichomes collected from a depth of 10 m (mean areal labelling density 0·5 gold particles μm−2) were exposed to the higher irradiances present at 1 m, the areal concentration of Fe-SOD increased to 3·5–4 gold particles μm−2 within 4 h. When cultures of Nodularia strain BC Nod-9427, adapted to low light (10 μmol m−2 s−1), were transferred to an incident irradiance of 1350 μmol m−2 s−1, a doubling of the areal concentration of Fe-SOD gold label was observed within 1 h. Addition of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1'-dimethylurea (DCMU) to cultures immediately before their transfer to increased illumination resulted in a decrease in areal Fe-SOD concentrations whereas addition of CdCl2 caused an increase over and above that induced by the elevated irradiance. These results suggest that Baltic Sea cyanobacteria are able to modulate their Fe-SOD content but that this might be in response to oxidative stress rather than to light per se .  相似文献

N2 fixation, measured as acetylene reduction, was studied in laboratory cultures and in natural assemblages (both as a mixed population and as individually picked colonies) of the heterocystous cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. and Nodularia spp. from the Baltic Sea. During a diurnal cycle of alternating light and darkness, these organisms reduced acetylene predominantly during the period of illumination, although considerable activity was also observed during the dark period. In both laboratory cultures and natural populations N2 fixation was saturated below a photon flux density of 600 μm−2 s−1. In cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea, nitrogenase activity was mostly confined to the surface layers. Samples collected from greater depths did not possess the same capacity for acetylene reduction as samples from the surface itself, even when incubated at the photon flux density prevailing in surface waters. This suggests that, with respect to N2 fixation, Baltic cyanobacteria are adapted to the intensity of illumination that they are currently experiencing.  相似文献

Daily integrals of photosynthesis by a cyanobacterial bloom in the Baltic Sea, during the summer of 1993, were calculated from the vertical distributions of light, temperature and the organisms in the water column and from photosynthesis/irradiance curves of picoplanktonic and diazotrophic cyanobacteria isolated from the community. The distribution of chlorophyll a in size-classes <20?µm and >20?µm was monitored over 9 days that included a deep mixing event followed by calm. Picocyanobacteria formed 70% of the cyanobacterial biomass and contributed 56% of the total primary production. Of the filamentous diazotrophs that formed the other 30%, Aphanizomenon contributed 28% and a Nodularia-containing fraction 16% of the primary production. For the whole population there was little change in standardized photosynthetic O2 production, which remained at about 31?mmol?m?2 before and after the mixing event. There were differences, however, between the classes of cyanobacteria: in picocyanobacteria primary production hardly changed, while in Aphanizomenon it increased by 2.6 and in Nodularia it fell below zero. Total phytoplankton photosynthesis was strongly dependent on total daily insolation with the compensation point at a photon insolation of 22.7?mol?m?2?d?1. Similar analyses of N2 fixation showed much less dependence on depth distribution of light and biomass: Aphanizomenon fixed about twice as much N2 as Nodularia their; their fixation exceeded their own N demand by about 12%. Together, these species contributed 49% of the total N demand of the phytoplankton population. Computer models based on the measured light attenuation and photosynthetic coefficients indicate that growth of the cyanobacterial population could occur only in the summer months when the critical depth of the cyanobacteria exceeds the depth of mixing.  相似文献

Abstract The cyanobacterium Synechocystis 6803 was tagged by chromosomal integration of the firefly luciferase gene, lue , resulting in the modified strain Synechocystis 6803- luc . The tagged cells were monitored in Baltic Sea microcosms both by detection of the luc gene by PCR amplification and by measurement of luc gene expression (bioluminescence) in total protein extracted from sediment and water. A new method was developed for isolation and concentration of total protein from sediment for optimization of luciferase quantitation. The detection limit for Synechocystis with a chromosomal luc insertion by bioluminescence was in the order of 4 × 103 cells per g sediment, a considerable improvement in sensitivity over previous methods. Another improvement was to use an internal luciferase standard to correct for quenching of light output by impurities in the samples. Baltic sea microcosms were inoculated with Synechocystis 6803- luc , and the luc DNA and luciferase protein specific to the tagged cells were monitored over time. A decrease in luminescence in the microcosm water was observed, simultaneously with an increase in luminescence in the sediment, suggesting settling of the luc -tagged cells in the sediment layer.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly in summer in central parts of the Baltic Sea. They are mainly composed of Aphanizomenon sp. and Nodularia spumigena. Both species have almost similar ecological requirements and can roughly be considered a uniform functional group. In order to identify factors that might favour bloom development, water quality data from monitoring programmes were compared with bloom distribution. A salinity from 3.8 to 11.5 PSU proved important for the spatial distribution of the bloom development. The bloom's onset was triggered by temperatures approximating 16°C provided that global radiation was > 120 W/m2 (daily mean) and wind speed was < 6 m/s. Nutrient concentrations decreased immediately before the bloom. The bloom's development ceased with poor weather conditions characterized by low irradiation or high wind speed.  相似文献

The sea growth of two whitefish forms, anadromous (Coregonus lavaretus lavaretus) and sea‐spawning (Coregonus lavaretus widegreni), was analysed using samples collected from the commercial sea catch in the Gulf of Bothnia (GoB) in the northern Baltic Sea during 1998–2014. In the GoB area, these two forms are possible to identify because the gill‐raker number and size at maturity vary between forms. The growth rate of the forms is linked to their feeding area. Sea‐spawning whitefish, which has a feeding migration near its home site, was shorter in the northern GoB (66°N–64°N) at the ages of 3–11 than those in the southern GoB (64°N–60°30′N). In the data, most whitefish were caught with gill nets in the GoB. The mesh sizes of gill nets capturing the anadromous form were mostly 35–45 mm, while those capturing the sea‐spawning form were <35 mm in the northern GoB. It is likely that the different growth trends for small and large whitefish were connected with differences in their recruitment for fishing. The length of anadromous females at the age of four sea years increased significantly, but the length of six‐year‐old anadromous female whitefish decreased over the catch years from 1998–2014. In contrast, the length of slow‐growing sea‐spawning whitefish of six years or older increased significantly in relation to the catch year in the gill‐net catch. The increase in the growth of young age groups in both forms was probably associated with the increasing temperature and the low fishing pressure on small fish. The decreasing age at capture for both forms and the depression of the mean size of old anadromous whitefish are signs of high fishing pressure with a high gill‐net effort that selectively removes the largest and oldest individuals of both forms.  相似文献

There are very few time series documenting clear trends of change in the biomass of total phytoplankton or single taxa that coincide with trends of increasing nutrient concentrations. Weekly or biweekly monitoring since 1997 on a cross section of the central Gulf of Finland (NE Baltic Sea) with similar climatic and hydrographic conditions, but different nutrient levels, provided a uniform dataset. In order to evaluate seasonal (June–September) patterns of phytoplankton succession, more than 1,200 samples were statistically analyzed by selecting 12 dominant taxa using wet weight biomass values. In addition, the continuously measured hydrographic parameters on board the ships of opportunity, and simultaneous nutrient analyses gave high frequency information on the water masses. The objective of this study was to identify the taxa that may prove indicative in the assessment of eutrophication in the appropriate monitoring time periods. None of the most common bloom-forming species (Aphanizomenon sp., Nodularia spumigena, and Heterocapsa triquetra) showed reliable correlations with enhanced nutrient concentrations. The species we suggest as reliable eutrophication indicators—oscillatorialean cyanobacteria and the diatoms Cyclotella choctawhatcheeana and Cylindrotheca closterium—showed the best relationships with total phosphorus concentrations. Their maxima appear toward the end of July or in August–September when phytoplankton community structure is more stable, and less frequent observations may give adequate results. Another diatom, Skeletonema costatum, exhibited stronger correlations with dissolved inorganic and total nitrogen in June, during the period of the summer phytoplankton minimum. Guest editors: J. H. In the brackish water of the Baltic Sea successful spawning of Baltic cod Gadus morhua is restricted to the Bornholm, Gdansk and Gotland basins below the halocline, occurring at 50–80 m depth. Due to irregular mixing of the deep water, stagnant conditions occur regularly accompanied with unfavourable oxygen conditions. In avoiding stressful oxygen conditions maintenance of egg buoyancy is considered a major limiting factor for successful spawning of Baltic cod. Batches of eggs were incubated experimentally in a density gradient column. Egg specific gravity changed during development, decreasing from the time of gastrulation, then increasing prior to hatching. The changes in specific gravity varied among egg batches from different females and were related to egg quality, egg size and ambient salinity. Eggs achieve different specific gravity depending on incubation salinity. Initial egg specific gravity together with the ability of eggs to gain and maintain buoyancy up to hatching, determine larval specific gravity and the depth where hatching will occur, and thus opportunities for larval survival, avoiding stressful oxygen conditions and developing at favourable feeding conditions.  相似文献

The implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires the development of ecologically-based classification systems for anthropogenically-induced eutrophication in all types of water bodies. Due to the inherent high temporal and spatial variability of hydrological and geochemical parameters of the coastal waters of the southern Baltic Sea, discrimination between anthropogenic impact and natural variability is necessary. The development of statistical methods for this discrimination was the main aim of this study. These methods were used to derive indicative phytoplankton parameters for different stages of eutrophication for the investigation area. For this purpose, a long-term phytoplankton data series was analysed, which covered a broad salinity and eutrophication gradient. In order to detect eutrophication effects, the analysis was restricted to phytoplankton spring bloom events and to the salinity range between 5 and 10 psu, i.e. superimposing seasonal and hydrodynamic effects were eliminated. An artificial abiotic degradation vector was developed based on four typical water quality parameters. A total of 11 potentially indicative phytoplankton parameters on different taxonomical levels arose from a correlation analysis with this degradation vector. These indicators were then tested for their ability to discriminate between three eutrophication levels. Finally, seven phytoplankton indices could be proposed: total phytoplankton biovolume, the percentage of diatoms and the biovolume of different size ranges of diatoms and one indicative species (Woronichinia compacta). Grazing by heterotrophic nanoflagellates on bacteria and phytoplankton was studied in a laboratory experiment, using a natural pelagic community originating from the Tvärminne sea area off the southern coast of Finland. Water was prescreened to remove larger grazers. Four experimental treatments were used: light and dark, with and without added nutrients. The growth of the large heterotrophic flagellates was stimulated by increased production of < 3 m phytoplankton. Clearance rates for heterotrophic nanoflagellates were estimated and were found to be within the range of previously reported values.  相似文献

The impact of nutrient enrichment on the phytoplankton community structure, and particularly cyanobacteria, was studied in a 3-week mesocosm experiment conducted in August 2001 in the Archipelago Sea, a part of the northern Baltic Sea. The factorial design experiment included daily additions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) at two mass ratios, 1N:1P and 7N:1P, respectively, additions of iron (Fe) and a synthetic chelator, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The floating enclosures (400 l) were sampled for analyses of phytoplankton biomass and community structure, phytoplankton primary production, chlorophyll a, nutrients, and hepatotoxins. Chlorophyll a concentration, phytoplankton biomass and primary production increased most in the 7N:1P treatment. The increase was mainly due to an abundant growth of chlorophytes (Dictyosphaerium subsolitarium, Kirchneriella spp., Monoraphidium contortum, and Oocystis spp.), pennate diatoms (especially Nitzschia spp.), dinophytes and the chroococcalean cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. The nutrient enrichments had no effect on the total biomass of N2-fixing cyanobacteria. Nevertheless, the biomass of Anabaena spp. was highest in the enrichments with a low N/P ratio. Chlorophyll a concentration and total phytoplankton biomass were not affected by Fe or EDTA, but Fe alone had a positive effect on the chlorophyte Kirchneriella sp. The N2-fixing cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. responded positively to Fe alone and to both Fe and EDTA added together. The hepatotoxin concentration increased during the experiment, but no clear responses to nutrient enrichments were found. Our study showed species-specific responses to nutrient enrichments among the N2-fixing cyanobacteria. Although the total phytoplankton production was not Fe-limited; the availability of Fe clearly affected the phytoplankton community structure.  相似文献

Selectivity of fishing gears used in the Baltic Sea cod fishery   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) plays a very significant role in the Baltic Sea ecosystem being the major fish top predator and the most important commercial species for the Baltic Sea fishing industry. Consequently the management and understanding of the exploitation pattern of the stock is of major importance. Technical regulations, improving the selectivity of cod, have been a major management strategy and the Baltic Sea is likely to be the area where most fishing gear selectivity studies, focussing on size selectivity, have been conducted over time. The methodology for conducting and analysing selectivity data has been significantly improved in recent years. The subject is reviewed since the choice of methodology can have a significant effect on the interpretation of the outcome of selectivity experiments. Factors affecting the selectivity of trawl and gill nets are considered. Alternative ways to improve the size and species selectivity of trawls using selective devices are reviewed. Selectivity parameters from available literature are listed and the correlations of selectivity parameters to the mesh size for different gears are estimated. The historical legislation on selectivity is reviewed and the expected selectivity for trawls is estimated. Management considerations concerning the mortality of escaping and discarded fish and wider management impacts have to be considered if improving selectivity. The review is ended by conclusions including reflections on needed research in the future.  相似文献

Late summer cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea contain Anabaena sp. together with Nodularia spumigena and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. Although Anabaena is common especially in the Gulf of Finland, very little is known about its genetic diversity. Here we undertook a molecular phylogenetic study of 68 Anabaena strains isolated from the brackish Gulf of Finland. We sequenced the 16S rRNA genes from 54 planktonic and 14 benthic Anabaena strains, and rbcL and rpoC1 genes from a subset of these strains. Phylogenetic trees showed that Anabaena strains, from both planktonic and benthic habitats, were genetically diverse. Although the Anabaena strains were morphologically diverse, in our study only one genetically valid species was found to exist in the plankton. Evolutionary distances between benthic Anabaena strains were greater than between planktonic strains, suggesting that benthic habitats allow for the maintenance of greater genetic diversity than planktonic habitats. A number of novel lineages containing only sequences obtained in this study were compiled in the phylogenetical analyses. Thus, it seemed that novel lineages of the genus Anabaena may be present in the Baltic Sea. Our results demonstrate that the Baltic Sea Anabaena strains show surprisingly high genetic diversity.  相似文献

Sediments of the southern Baltic Sea were analysed for content of steryl chlorin esters, the chlorin compounds discovered recently in the marine environment. The chlorin esters occur in the Baltic sediments in substantial amounts and form a considerable fraction of the total chlorin content. Among the physicochemical parameters studied the highest correlation with the steryl chlorins showed organic carbon content in sediments and the content of fraction of sediments smaller than 10 μm. A significant correlation was observed between the steryl chlorins content and other chlorins as chlorophylla, phaeophytina, pyrophaeophytina as well as with β-carotene, the distinctly less significant correlation was with phaeophorbidea. This indicates an other way of formation of the steryl chlorins from algae than zooplankton grazing.  相似文献
