We examined the occurrence, mechanism and costs and benefits of leaf caching in laboratory colonies of two species of leafcutting ants, Atta cephalotes and A. colombica. If foragers returning to the nest are unable to enter because of a temporary bottleneck caused by leaves building up they may deposit their leaf pieces outside the nest entrance, forming a leaf cache. Similar leaf caches occur in the field at foraging trail junctions, obstacles on the trail and within nest entrance tunnels. Foraging ants carrying leaves were presented with different-sized leaf caches and the number dropping their leaves on the cache was recorded. The probability of a forager dropping her leaf was positively correlated with the size of the cache that she encountered. Therefore, positive feedback played a role in the formation of nest entrance caches. Cached pieces were more likely to be retrieved than noncached pieces but the time taken to retrieve leaf pieces from a cache was greater than from scattered groups of leaves. We suggest that the strategy of flexible nest entrance caching is an adaptive response to fluctuating food availability and collection. Community structure is one of the most commonly observed features of Online Social Networks (OSNs) in reality. The knowledge of this feature is of great advantage: it not only provides helpful insights into developing more efficient social-aware solutions but also promises a wide range of applications enabled by social and mobile networking, such as routing strategies in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) and worm containment in OSNs. Unfortunately, understanding this structure is very challenging, especially in dynamic social networks where social interactions are evolving rapidly. Our work focuses on the following questions: How can we efficiently identify communities in dynamic social networks? How can we adaptively update the network community structure based on its history instead of recomputing from scratch? To this end, we present Quick Community Adaptation (QCA), an adaptive modularity-based framework for not only discovering but also tracing the evolution of network communities in dynamic OSNs. QCA is very fast and efficient in the sense that it adaptively updates and discovers the new community structure based on its history together with the network changes only. This flexible approach makes QCA an ideal framework applicable for analyzing large-scale dynamic social networks due to its lightweight computing-resource requirement. To illustrate the effectiveness of our framework, we extensively test QCA on both synthesized and real-world social networks including Enron, arXiv e-print citation, and Facebook networks. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of QCA in real applications: (1) A social-aware message forwarding strategy in MANETs, and (2) worm propagation containment in OSNs. Competitive results in comparison with other methods reveal that social-based techniques employing QCA as a community detection core outperform current available methods.  相似文献

As the number of Internet users increase explosively, the delay in network response time is also increasing. An economic and efficient solution for this problem is web caching. But the use of a cache server can cause another bottleneck because of the concentration of requests at the cache server. Many studies on improving cache server performance have been suggested, but existing studies have focused on load balancing and/or caching capacity, not directly on improving the throughput of a single cache server. In this paper, we analyze the causes of cache server bottleneck, and propose an arbitral thread and the delayed caching mechanism as a solution. We use an arbitral thread in order to provide a quick service to users’ service requests, and we use delayed caching in order to improve system reliability. The proposed cache server is implemented through a modification of the SQUID cache server, and we compare its performance with the original SQUID cache server.  相似文献

Adaptation occurs in a variety of forms in all sensory systems, motivating the question: what is its purpose? A productive approach has been to hypothesize that adaptation helps neural systems to efficiently encode stimuli whose statistics vary in time. To encode efficiently, a neural system must change its coding strategy, or computation, as the distribution of stimuli changes. Information theoretic methods allow this efficient coding hypothesis to be tested quantitatively. Empirically, adaptive processes occur over a wide range of timescales. On short timescales, underlying mechanisms include the contribution of intrinsic nonlinearities. Over longer timescales, adaptation is often power-law-like, implying the coexistence of multiple timescales in a single adaptive process. Models demonstrate that this can result from mechanisms within a single neuron.  相似文献

This paper aims at better understanding causal relationships between parts of the brain during epileptic seizures. Our objective is to detect effective connectivity, i.e. to discover whether neural activity in a given substructure influences activity in another part of the brain. Recent efforts have been devoted to develop nonlinear and nonparametric approaches, such as transfer entropy (TE), to overcome linear methods limitations. However, building efficient TE estimators still asks open questions. In this study, we propose a new strategy to improve TE estimation by introducing different nonparametric adaptive kernel density estimators. Among all techniques under study, the Gaussian adaptive kernel density estimator based approach presents the best behavior whatever the tested model (autoregressive or physiological model).  相似文献

竞争者假说、肉食假说和病态行为假说。杀婴无疑会对受害母亲造成巨大的损失。雌性防范杀婴的策略包括直
接抵抗、回避接触雄性、积极发情、依靠保护雄性和改变繁殖群组成等多种方式。但是雄性杀婴现象不会完全
消失,因为出现该行为的根本原因是雌性防范雄性杀婴的难度较大,而雄性实施杀婴行为的风险较低、利益较

Florida scrub‐jays are cooperative breeders that live in family groups consisting of a breeding pair, often with several non‐breeding helpers. Florida scrub‐jays cache food by scatter‐hoarding items for later consumption. Within family groups, members have the opportunity to observe and pilfer the caches of other members. We observed jays harvesting experimentally provisioned peanuts alone and in the presence of other family members, to determine whether jays modify their food‐handling behavior relative to social context. Non‐breeding helpers were less likely to cache in the presence of the dominant male breeder than when alone and all jays tended to cache out of sight when observed by another jay. These changes in caching behavior are consistent with cache protection strategies employed by other species. However, the adaptive value of such cache protection within a sedentary cooperatively breeding family group on a year‐round territory is unclear.  相似文献

We examined the proximate mechanisms of cache retrieval in the group‐living, southern flying squirrel, Glaucomys volans, through a series of behavioral experiments conducted in a large indoor arena. The effectiveness of several retrieval mechanisms was determined including spatial memory, olfaction, random searching and a heuristic under different environmental conditions. Our goal was to elucidate the hoarding strategy of individuals in a nest group and to address whether food storing individuals possess a retrieval advantage over pilfering nestmates. A storer's retrieval advantage is necessary for scatter hoarding to be an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) within aggregations of unrelated individuals. Our previous work has shown that, G. volans lives in such groups, and consequently it was important to address the storer's retrieval advantage under a range of environmental conditions. Initially in our baseline experiment, we developed methods to eliminate olfactory‐based retrieval and to control for random searching. Subsequently, we experimentally determined the effectiveness of cache retrieval via spatial memory, a heuristic and olfaction. We examined the mechanisms of cache retrieval in three additional experiments using two independent subject populations and found that under dry, odorless conditions spatial memory was the most effective retrieval mechanism in support of a storer's retrieval advantage. In a fifth experiment we examined cache retrieval under wet environmental conditions and showed that olfactory‐based retrieval was effective and the storer's advantage was reduced. We interpret these laboratory results based on considerations of natural environmental conditions and game theory. We propose a conditional ESS strategy where animals store and retrieve their own caches as the primary food hoarding tactic and opportunistically pilfer caches as a secondary tactic.  相似文献

食物贮藏是许多动物应对食物短缺、保障其生存和繁衍的一种适应性行为。保护好贮藏食物以供食物短缺期利用,是食物贮藏成功的标志和进化动力。同种或异种动物盗食是贮藏食物损失的重要原因。嗅觉、视觉与空间记忆、随机搜寻等是动物搜寻和盗取食物的重要手段;避免盗食、阻止盗食和容忍盗食是动物反盗食的重要策略。动物通常采用多种行为策略进行盗食和反盗食,分配食物资源,形成相对稳定的种内、种间关系。盗食与反盗食互作及其对贮食行为进化的意义已成为行为生态学的研究热点和前沿之一,针对鸟类和哺乳类动物的研究尤为丰富。本文总结了贮食动物常见的盗食和反盗食行为策略及其相互作用的研究进展,主要内容涉及贮食动物利用嗅觉、视觉与空间记忆、随机搜寻等盗取其他个体食物的盗食策略,以及通过隐藏、转移、保卫、容忍等方式减少被盗食,保护贮藏食物的行为策略。针对现有研究状况,从种间盗食与反盗食及其与物种共存的关系,种间非对称盗食关系及其适应意义,盗食与反盗食最适行为策略及其与贮食动物适合度的关系等方面对今后研究提出了建议。  相似文献

Scatterhoarding birds that cache food items have become an important model system for the study of spatial memory and its correlates in the brain. In particular, it has been suggested that through adaptive specialization, species that cache food have better spatial memory and a relatively larger hippocampus than their non-caching relatives. Critics of this approach, dubbed neuroecology, maintain that neither of these hypotheses has been confirmed. Here, we review the evidence pertaining to a correlation between food-storing capability and the relative volume of the hippocampus. Hippocampal volume has been related to food-storing behaviour in comparisons between species, within species, or within individuals, but the evidence is not consistent. There are several possible reasons for this inconsistency, including: (1) food-hoarding birds may not always use memory for retrieval, (2) there may be systematic differences between data from North American and Eurasian species that affect the analysis, and (3) sample sizes have in many cases been too small. In addition, both the independent variable (degree of food-hoarding specialization) and the dependent variable (relative volume of the hippocampus) are not clearly and consistently defined. Alternatively, it is possible that the neuroecological hypothesis is false. Systematic empirical research is necessary to determine whether or not food-storing birds have evolved adaptive specializations in brain and cognition.  相似文献

The use of mobile computers is gaining popularity. There is an increasing trend in the number of users with laptops, PDAs, and smart phones. Access to information repositories in the future will be dominated by mobile clients rather than traditional “fixed” clients. These mobile clients download information by periodically connecting to repositories of data stored in either databases or file systems. Such mobile clients constitute a new and different kind of workload and exhibit a different access pattern than seen in traditional client server systems. Though file systems have been modified to handle clients that can download information, disconnect, and later reintegrate, databases have not been redesigned to accommodate mobile clients. There is a need to support mobile clients in the context of client server databases. This paper is about organizing the database server to take into consideration the access patterns of mobile clients. We propose the concept of hoard attributes which capture these access patterns. Three different techniques for organizing data on the server based on the hoard attribute are presented. We argue that each technique is suited for a particular workload. The workload is a combination of requests from mobile clients and traditional clients. This reorganization also allows us to address issues of concurrency control, disconnection and replica control in mobile databases. We present simulation results that show the performance of server reorganization using hoard attributes. We also provide an elaborate discussion of issues resulting from this reorganization in this new paradigm taking into account both mobile and traditional clients. Earlier reports suggested that seasonal variation in food-caching behavior (caching intensity and cache retrieval accuracy) might correlate with morphological changes in the hippocampal formation, a brain structure thought to play a role in remembering cache locations. We demonstrated that changes in cache retrieval accuracy can also be triggered by experimental variation in food supply: captive mountain chickadees (Poecile gambeli) maintained on limited and unpredictable food supply were more accurate at recovering their caches and performed better on spatial memory tests than birds maintained on ad libitum food. In this study, we investigated whether these two treatment groups also differed in the volume and neuron number of the hippocampal formation. If variation in memory for food caches correlates with hippocampal size, then our birds with enhanced cache recovery and spatial memory performance should have larger hippocampal volumes and total neuron numbers. Contrary to this prediction we found no significant differences in volume or total neuron number of the hippocampal formation between the two treatment groups. Our results therefore indicate that changes in food-caching behavior and spatial memory performance, as mediated by experimental variations in food supply, are not necessarily accompanied by morphological changes in volume or neuron number of the hippocampal formation in fully developed, experienced food-caching birds.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel method for selecting a navigation satellite subset for a global positioning system (GPS) based on a genetic algorithm is presented. This approach is based on minimizing the factors in the geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) using a modified genetic algorithm (MGA) with an elite conservation strategy, adaptive selection, adaptive mutation, and a hybrid genetic algorithm that can select a subset of the satellites represented by specific numbers in the interval (4 ∼ n) while maintaining position accuracy. A comprehensive simulation demonstrates that the MGA-based satellite selection method effectively selects the correct number of optimal satellite subsets using receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) or fault detection and exclusion (FDE). This method is more adaptable and flexible for GPS receivers, particularly for those used in handset equipment and mobile phones.  相似文献

Host fecundity reduction is a life-history trait that is commonly exhibited in parasitic associations. It is particularly prevalent in female invertebrate hosts that invest heavily in egg production during a relatively short life span. Here, Hilary Hurd uses examples of parasitized insects and trematode infections of snails to consider the evolutionary significance of this response to infection. Studies of host egg production and reports of the physiological mechanisms underlying reduction of host reproductive success are used to evaluate the hypotheses that fecundity reduction might be a by-product of infection, or an adaptive strategy on the part of parasite or host.  相似文献

Improving detection rates for elusive species with clumped distributions is often accomplished through adaptive sampling designs. This approach can be extended to include species with temporally variable detection probabilities. By concentrating survey effort in years when the focal species are most abundant or visible, overall detection rates can be improved. This requires either long-term monitoring at a few locations where the species are known to occur or models capable of predicting population trends using climatic and demographic data. For marbled salamanders (Ambystoma opacum) in Massachusetts, we demonstrate that annual variation in detection probability of larvae is regionally correlated. In our data, the difference in survey success between years was far more important than the difference among the three survey methods we employed: diurnal surveys, nocturnal surveys, and dipnet surveys. Based on these data, we simulate future surveys to locate unknown populations under a temporally adaptive sampling framework. In the simulations, when pond dynamics are correlated over the focal region, the temporally adaptive design improved mean survey success by as much as 26% over a non-adaptive sampling design. Employing a temporally adaptive strategy costs very little, is simple, and has the potential to substantially improve the efficient use of scarce conservation funds.  相似文献

Mobile cloud-based video streaming services cannot be provided seamlessly when network traffic increases sharply in congested areas such as colleges, universities, and downtown at specific times. This paper proposes a configuration scheme for connectivity-aware P2P networks which can reduce network traffic of cloud-based streaming servers through sharing of streaming video by utilizing information on connectivity status of mobile devices, and which can improve the quality of mobile cloud-based video streaming services by considering mobility of mobile devices and QoS which have not been considered in existing P2P schemes. Our proposed scheme reduces the amount of server traffic and the disconnection times of mobile devices significantly, compared to the non-P2P scheme and the AODV scheme. It also increases considerably the number of mobile devices to which a cloud-based streaming server can provide video streaming services simultaneously, compared to the two schemes.  相似文献

Current theories of food-hoarding behavior maintain that hoardingcan be adaptive if a hoarder is more likely than any other animalto retrieve its own caches. A survey of the literature indicatedthat the hoarder often has a recovery advantage when searchingfor items it has stored, but levels of cache pilferage are oftenso high (2–30% per day) that at least for some long-termfood hoarders, the caching animal is unlikely to recover a significantamount of its stored food. Except in a few cases (acorn woodpeckersand beavers), kin selection cannot explain the high levels ofpilferage observed. We suggest that some small solitary animalswith overlapping home ranges (e.g., most rodents, chickadees,and tits) are able to tolerate high levels of cache pilferage.Pilferage is not as damaging to these animals as it might otherwisebe because many interspecific and all intraspecific cache pilferersalso cache food. These or similar food caches can be pilferedlater by the original food hoarder. In other words, pilferingin these species is often reciprocal, and because it is reciprocal,it can be tolerated. We argue that caching systems based onreciprocal pilfering can be stable and are not necessarily susceptibleto "cheaters," animals that pilfer food but do not scatter hoardfood themselves, and we introduce a model of food hoarding tosupport this argument. These food-caching systems based on reciprocalpilfering resemble cooperative behavior, but the behavior isactually driven by the selfish interests of individuals. Thistheory of scatter-hoarding behavior based on reciprocity hasimportant implications for the ways that food-hoarding animalsinteract with inter- and intraspecific competitors.  相似文献

We present a new method which allows a swarm of robots to sort arbitrarily arranged objects into homogeneous clusters. In the ideal case, a distributed robotic sorting method should establish a single homogeneous cluster for each object type. This can be achieved with existing methods, but the rate of convergence is considered too slow for real-world application. Previous research on distributed robotic sorting is typified by randomised movement with a pick-up/deposit behaviour that is a probabilistic function of local object density. We investigate whether the ability of each robot to localise and return to remembered places can improve distributed sorting performance. In our method, each robot maintains a cache point for each object type. Upon collecting an object, it returns to add this object to the cluster surrounding the cache point. Similar to previous biologically inspired work on distributed sorting, no explicit communication between robots is implemented. However, the robots can still come to a consensus on the best cache for each object type by observing clusters and comparing their sizes with remembered cache sizes. We refer to this method as cache consensus. Our results indicate that incorporating this localisation capability enables a significant improvement in the rate of convergence. We present experimental results using a realistic simulation of our targeted robotic platform. A subset of these experiments is also validated on physical robots.  相似文献

Various strategies employed in genomic DNA cloning by subtractive hybridization have been examined by computer simulations, with the comparison between the predictions and the published results. The result shows that the efficiency of target sequence enrichment and the sensitivity to experimental conditions depend strongly on the enrichment strategy employed. The strategy selecting only tester/tester after hybridization can be very efficient to enrich targets. For successful target enrichment, however, the strategy requires a highly efficient subtraction method and proper hybridization conditions. The strategy also requires that the selected DNA be amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) after each or each alternate subtraction. By contrast, the strategy selecting tester/tester plus single-stranded tester is less sensitive to various experimental factors, compared with the strategy selecting only tester/tester. However, it is not as efficient. With this strategy, the tester DNA selected may or may not be amplified by PCR before the next round. In the case of the strategy selecting single-stranded tester, the target DNA can be successfully enriched only when the selected DNA is directly used without PCR amplification in the next round. The strong features of existing methods can be combined to develop a protocol that is more efficient and more reliable.  相似文献
