Prey quality can have large impacts on the survival, growth and behavior of predators. A number of studies have examined how different species of prey vary in quality. However, far less is known about intraspecific variation in the quality of prey for predators and even less about what nutrients are extracted from prey by predators. We examined how the sex, feeding level and developmental status of prey affected the quantities of nutrients present in prey bodies and the quantities of nutrients that could be extracted from prey by spiders. Female and well‐fed prey were larger and had more nutrients than male and food‐limited prey, respectively. After taking into account differences in prey size, spiders extracted relatively more lipid and less protein from female and well‐fed prey than from male and food‐limited prey, respectively. Mealworms were of higher quality than adult mealworm beetles; spiders were able to extract more lipid, protein and other nutrients from larvae than adults. While lipid present in prey was a good predictor of lipid consumed, protein present in prey was not a reliable predictor of protein consumed. The variation in prey quality that we observed within a single species of prey (i.e. well‐fed vs food‐limited crickets) was as large as variation in quality among the three species of prey used in these experiments. Intraspecific variation in prey quality may be an important factor affecting predatory arthropods, especially in habitats or at times of year when one species of prey is abundant. Further studies are needed to examine the consequences of intraspecific variation in prey quality on the life history and behavior of predators.  相似文献

  • 1 In a study of five ponds sensitive to acid precipitation, we document seasonal acidification profiles and assess the impact of short-term acid pulses on the reproductive success of resident sunfish (Lepomis spp.).
  • 2 Three years of water sampling at 2–3 week intervals showed substantial seasonal variation in pH and alkalinity consistent with a carbonate buffering system. Though all ponds shared a common seasonal pattern in pH, ponds with relatively low pH and alkalinity showed the greatest variation in these parameters. Spring minima may dispose some of the ponds towards episodes of extreme acidity during heavy spring rains.
  • 3 Otolith analysis of young-of-the-year sunfish revealed recruitment failures for eggs laid early in spring in ponds with relatively low alkalinity and pH, and, in the most extreme case, missing day classes at subsequent irregular intervals even though average pH and alkalinity were well above those demonstrated to affect centrarchid fishes.
  • 4 Age-class distributions of sunfishes revealed gaps in adult age distributions which could be traced through 3 years of the study, but there was no clear-cut relationship between pond acidification and the age structure of adult fish.
  • 5 Seasonal profiles of acidity may enable researchers to predict the time during which a pond or lake may be highly sensitive to acid inputs. Comparative otolith analysis of young-of-the-year fishes and short-term continuous monitoring of water chemistry may provide an early warning of biological effects of acidification in sensitive bodies of water.

The seasonal growth potential of contrasting white clover populations differing in leaf size and geographical origin was studied during the year in a cool glasshouse in the absence of freeze damage. A Mediterranean population showed superior growth to all other populations during the cooler months of late autumn, winter and spring when it also had longer leaflets, petioles and internodes. In contrast, large leaf types of north European origin grew faster and had longer leaflets, petioles and internodes than the Mediterranean type during summer. A hybrid between these contrasting types showed an intermediate response with more uniform growth and expression of these morphological characters throughout the year. The exploitation of this out-of-season growth potential by hybridisation of Mediterranean and north European genotypes followed by selection is discussed in the context of recent introductions of ecotypes from the Swiss Alps in which desirable combinations of good spring growth and winter hardiness have been identified.  相似文献

Previous work in New Zealand has shewn that genetic variation within populations of Agrostis capillaris can be comparable to that between populations, even between populations over a very wide environmental range. To determine whether this reflects the recent advent of A. capillaris in New Zealand, with a small founding gene pool and a short time for ecotypic differentiation, populations from a comparable range of environments were sampled randomly in the same way in Britain. Populations were grown in comparable conditions in the two countries, but to ensure comparability only proportional variation was examined. Characters used in the assessment of within- and between-population variation were step+sheath length, lamina length, lamina width and relative growth rate. Within populations, there were highly significant genotypic differences, especially in the British populations. Differences between populations were rather greater than those within- populations, and for lamina length this was significant in both countries. For both Britain and New Zealand, there were cases where the two genotypes sampled from a population were similar in a particular character. In some cases, populations from comparable habitats in the two countries were similar to each other. For the three morphological characters, total genotypic variation over all populations sampled was greater in Britain than in New Zealand. For some characters this was due to between-site variation, and for some to within-site variation. It is concluded that some of the evidence for non-adaptation in A. capillaris in New Zealand is caused by a more limited gene pool, and insufficient time for sorting of genotypes into habitats.  相似文献

Sequence variation of MicroRNAs and their binding sites in Arabidopsis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Major differences exist between plants and animals both in the extent of microRNA (miRNA)-based gene regulation and the sequence complementarity requirements for miRNA-messenger RNA pairing. Whether these differences affect how these sites evolve at the molecular level is unknown. To determine the extent of sequence variation at miRNAs and their targets in a plant species, we resequenced 16 miRNA families (66 miRNAs in total) and all 52 of the characterized binding sites for these miRNAs in the plant model Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), accounting for around 50% of the known miRNAs and binding sites in this species. As has been shown previously in humans, we find that both miRNAs and their target binding sites have very low nucleotide variation and divergence compared to their flanking sequences in Arabidopsis, indicating strong purifying selection on these sites in this species. Sequence data flanking the mature miRNAs, however, exhibit normal levels of polymorphism for the accessions in this study and, in some cases, nonneutral evolution or subtle effects on predicted pre-miRNA secondary structure, suggesting that there is raw material for the differential function of miRNA alleles. Overall, our results show that despite differences in the architecture of miRNA-based regulation, miRNAs and their targets are similarly constrained in both plants and animals.  相似文献

The feedback between plant litterfall and nutrient cycling processes plays a major role in the regulation of nutrient availability and net primary production in terrestrial ecosystems. While several studies have examined site-specific feedbacks between litter chemistry and nitrogen (N) availability, little is known about the interaction between climate, litter chemistry, and N availability across different ecosystems. We assembled data from several studies spanning a wide range of vegetation, soils, and climatic regimes to examine the relationship between aboveground litter chemistry and annual net N mineralization. Net N mineralization declined strongly and non-linearly as the litter lignin:N ratio increased in forest ecosystems (r 2 = 0.74, P < 0.01). Net N mineralization decreased linearly as litter lignin concentration increased, but the relationship was significant (r 2 = 0.63, P < 0.01) only for tree species. Litterfall quantity, N concentration, and N content correlated poorly with net N mineralization across this range of sites (r 2 < 0.03, P = 0.17–0.26). The relationship between the litter lignin:N ratio and net N mineralization from forest floor and mineral soil was similar. The litter lignin:N ratio explained more of the variation in net N mineralization than climatic factors over a wide range of forest age classes, suggesting that litter quality (lignin:N ratio) may exert more than a proximal control over net N mineralization by influencing soil organic matter quality throughout the soil profile independent of climate. Aphids are common herbivores in the strawberry crop that can reduce plant vigor and fruit quality and also transmit viruses. Aphid species prefer diverse plant organs, which represent particular habitats of different quality for aphids and for the development of natural enemies’ populations. Different habitat units (young leaves, mature leaves, buds, flowers) of strawberry were sampled fortnightly during all seasons. We identified seven aphid species, namely Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, Aphis gossypii, and Macrosiphum euphorbiae, the most abundant. During the autumn, C. fragaefolli and M. euphorbiae were scarce and A. gossypii was denser on mature leaves, while during summer M. euphorbiae was absent. During the winter, C. fragaefolii predominated on buds and young leaves, A. gossypii on flowers, and both species on mature leaves. During the spring, C. fragaefolii was even more abundant on buds, A. gossypii predominated on mature leaves, and the three species were equally abundant on flowers and young leaves. Parasitoids emerged from A. gossypii, M. euphorbiae and Myzus persicae, but not from C. fragaefolii. Three Aphidius and two Aphelinus species were recovered. All primary parasitoid species emerged from A. gossypii, and secondary parasitoids emerged only from this aphid. Aphis gossypii parasitism on mature leaves was markedly higher in winter and summer than in autumn and spring. Parasitism of A. gossypii was independent of its density, and the number of parasitized aphids was never higher than six. Our results contribute to define the most appropriate sample unit to estimate aphid density of different species and provide information about seasonal natural parasitism.  相似文献

Amphibians are currently the most threatened group of vertebrates worldwide, and introduced fauna play a major role in their decline. The control of introduced predators to protect endangered species is often based on predation rates derived from diet studies of predators, but prey detection probabilities using different techniques are variable. We measured the detectability of frogs as prey, using morphological and DNA‐based diet analyses, in the stomachs and faeces of four mammal species that have been introduced to many areas of the world. Frogs (Litoria raniformis) were fed to rats (Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus), mice (Mus musculus) and hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus). DNA‐based analysis outperformed morphological analysis, increasing the prey detection rate from 2% to 70% in stomachs and from 0% to 53% in faeces. In most cases, utilizing either stomachs or faeces did not affect the success of prey DNA detection; however, using faeces extended the detectability half‐life from 7 to 21 h. This study is the first to measure prey DNA detection periods in mammalian stomachs, and the first to compare prey DNA detection periods in the stomachs and faeces of vertebrates. The results indicate that DNA‐based diet analysis provides a more reliable approach for detecting amphibians as prey and has the potential to be used to estimate the rate of predation by introduced mammals on endangered amphibians.  相似文献

Large carnivore community structure is affected by direct and indirect interactions between intra-guild members. Co-existence between different species within a carnivore guild may occur through diet, habitat or temporal partitioning. Since carnivore species are highly dependent on availability and accessibility of prey, diet partitioning is potentially one of the most important mechanisms in allowing carnivores to co-exist. Intra-guild interactions may vary over time as carnivore prey preference and diet overlap can change due to seasonal changes in resource availability. We conducted scat analysis to compare the seasonal changes in prey preference, diet partitioning and niche breadth of four large carnivore species, namely leopard Panthera pardus, spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta, brown hyena Parahyaena brunnea and wild dog Lycaon pictus in central Tuli, Botswana. Large carnivores in central Tuli display a high dietary overlap, with spotted hyena and brown hyena displaying almost complete dietary overlap and the other carnivore species displaying slightly lower but still significant dietary overlap. Dietary niche breadth for both hyena species was high possibly due to their flexible foraging strategies, including scavenging, while leopard and wild dog showed a relatively low niche breadth, suggesting a more specialised diet. High dietary overlap in central Tuli is possibly explained by the high abundance of prey species in the area thereby reducing competition pressure between carnivore species. Our research highlights the need to assess the influence of diet partitioning in structuring large carnivore communities across multiple study sites, by demonstrating that in prey rich environments, the need for diet partitioning by carnivores to avoid competition may be limited.  相似文献

One of the most promising hypotheses for the evolution of sex is that sexual reproduction is advantageous because it increases the rate of adaptive evolution in response to parasites. To investigate this advantage of sex, we compared genetic variation of geminiviruses infecting sexual and asexual populations of Eupatorium (Asteraceae). The infection frequency was 37.5% in the sexual population and 87.8% in the asexual population. The lower infection frequency in the sexual population might be the result of higher genetic diversity of host plants. If geminiviruses have diverged to counter defence systems of genetically variable hosts, genetic diversity of viruses is expected to be higher in sexual host populations than in asexual host populations. To test this expectation, we used single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis to examine genetic diversity of the geminiviruses in a DNA region containing the open-reading frame (ORF) C4 gene, which is known to function as a host range determinant. As predicted, higher genetic diversity of viruses was observed in the sexual population: three SSCP types were found in the asexual population while six types were found in the sexual population. Sequencing of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products revealed further genetic diversity. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequences showed that the SSCP types belonged to four different clades. Several SSCP types from the same clade were found in the sexual population, whereas the asexual population included only one SSCP type from each clade. Amino acid replacements of ORF C4 are suggested to be accelerated in the sexual population. This evidence supports the hypothesis that sexual reproduction is advantageous as a defence against epidemic disease.  相似文献

Measurement of intrapopulation variation in secondary sexual traits is a priority in the testing of sexual selection models. However, it is important to take care in the choice of materials and delimitation of populations. The use of museum skins to study variation in male tail ornaments may substantially underrepresent the real degree of intrapopulation variation. Data from live animals in specific areas provide more realistic estimates, and should be used whenever possible. I use as an example field data on male ornament length and body size in Vidua macroura (Aves: Ploceidae), a promiscuous, parasitic African finch with elongated tail plumes. Individual males differ in the timing and rate of ornament growth, and females are therefore faced with a large degree of phenotypic variation in male ornament size, even though genetic variation may not be great. By correcting for seasonal variation in the ornament lengths of males caught at different times, I show that mid-season coefficients of variation in ornament length of breeding males in two populations are as high as 18% and 55%. By contrast, tarsus, wing and unornamented tail lengths of the same males vary from 2 to 4%.  相似文献

We studied the effects of removal of breeding nomadic avian predators (the kestrel, Falco tinnunculus and Tengmalm's owl, Aegolius funereus) on small mammals (voles of the genera Microtus and Clethrionomys and the common shrew, Sorex araneus) during 1989–1992 in western Finland to find out if these predators have a regulating or limiting impact on their prey populations. We removed potential breeding sites of raptors from five manipulation areas (c. 3 km2 each), whereas control areas had nest-boxes in addition to natural cavities and stick-nests. Densities of small mammals were monitored by snap-trapping in April, June, and August, and densities of mammalian predators (the least weasel, Mustela nivalis nivalis, the stoat, M. erminea and the red fox, Vulpes vulpes) by snow tracking in early spring and late autumn. The yearly mean number of raptor breeding territories was 0.2–1.0 in reduction areas and 3.0–8.2 in control areas. Breeding raptors alone did not regulate prey populations in the long term, but probably caused short-term changes in the population dynamics of both the main prey, the sibling vole (Microtus rossiaemeridionalis) and an alternative prey (the common shrew). The densities of an alternative prey, the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) decreased in raptor reduction areas, most likely due to increased least weasel predation pressure in the absence of breeding avian predators.  相似文献

Research over the past decade has established spatial resource subsidies as important determinants of food web dynamics. However, most empirical studies have considered the role of subsidies only in terms of magnitude, ignoring an important property of subsidies that may affect their impact in recipient food webs: the trophic structure of the subsidy relative to in situ resources. This may be especially important when subsidies are composed of organisms, as opposed to nutrient subsidies, because the trophic position of subsidy organisms may differ from in situ prey. I explored the relative magnitude and trophic structure of a cross-habitat prey subsidy, adult aquatic insects, in terrestrial habitats along three streams in the south–central United States. Overall, adult aquatic insects contributed more than one-third of potential insect prey abundance and biomass to the terrestrial habitat. This contribution peaked along a permanent spring stream, reaching as high as 94% of abundance and 86% of biomass in winter. Trophic structure of adult aquatic and terrestrial insects differed. Nearly all adult aquatic insects were non-consumers as adults, whereas all but one taxon of terrestrial insects were consumers. Such a difference created a strong relationship between the relative contribution of the prey subsidy and the trophic structure of the prey assemblage: as the proportion of adult aquatic insects increased, the proportion of consumers in the prey assemblage declined. Specific effects varied seasonally and with distance from the stream as the taxonomic composition of the subsidy changed, but general patterns were consistent. These findings show that adult aquatic insect subsidies to riparian food webs not only elevate prey availability, but also alter the trophic structure of the entire winged insect prey assemblage.  相似文献

Throughout the year, a radioreceptor assay was used to investigate the number of binding sites for several opioid ligands in C57BL/6J mouse brain homogenates. The mean number of sites observed for 3H-morphine and 3H-dihydromorphine was about one third less than the mean for 3H-D-ala2-met5-enkephalinamide, 3H-naloxone or 3H-naltrexone. Some seasonal variation was observed in all the opioids studied; the seasonal fluctuation observed in the apparent number of naloxone binding sites was the greatest. These seasonal alterations may play a role in the annual pattern of several physiological processes in which endorphin systems are directly or indirectly involved.  相似文献

We examined how large seasonal influxes of migratory prey influenced population dynamics of arctic foxes and how this varied with fluctuations in small mammal (lemming and vole) abundance—the main prey of arctic foxes throughout most of their range. Specifically, we compared how arctic fox abundance, breeding density and litter size varied inside and outside a large goose colony and in relation to annual variation in small mammal abundance. Information-theoretic model selection showed that (1) breeding density and fox abundance were 2–3 times higher inside the colony than they were outside the colony and (2) litter size, breeding density and annual variation in fox abundance in the colony tracked fluctuations in lemming abundance. The influence of lemming abundance on reproduction and abundance of arctic foxes outside the colony was inconclusive, largely because fox densities outside the colony were low, which made it difficult to detect such relationships. Lemming abundance was, thus, the main factor governing reproduction and abundance of arctic foxes in the colony, whereas seasonal influxes of geese and their eggs provided foxes with external subsidies that elevated breeding density and fox abundance above that which lemmings could support. This study highlights (1) the relative importance of migratory prey and other foods on the abundance and reproduction by local consumers and (2) how migratory animals function as vectors of nutrient transfer between distant ecosystems such as Arctic environments and wintering areas by geese thousands of kilometres to the south.  相似文献

Shell preference patterns of two common hermit crabs from hard bottom reef flats on the Caribbean coast of Panama are examined in relation to the predation pressures and physical stresses of their habitat. Clibanarius antillensis Stimpson lives in the high intertidal habitat and minimizes exposure to predators by seeking refuge during high tides. It prefers high-spired shells which maximize protection from thermal stress. Calcinus tibicen Herbst avoids tidal emersion and prefers low-spired shells which enhance resistance to the predators common on Caribbean reef flats.The results are compared with similar results from the tropical eastern Pacific Bay of Panama. Shell-crushing predation on Caribbean hermit crabs is suggested to differ quantitatively and qualitatively from predation on hermit crabs in the Bay of Panama. Predation on hermit crabs in the Bay of Panama is more intense and effects larger individuals than predation on Caribbean reef flat hermit crabs. In addition, shell-crushing predation on hermit crabs in the Bay of Panama is primarily from teleost fish predators (Diodon spp.), while predation on Caribbean hermit crabs is primarily by bottom-dwelling crustaceans.Differences in predation pressures and tidal regimes between the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Panama are reflected in the shell preferences and behavior of hermit crabs from the two areas.  相似文献

Fungi are among the most important aeroallergens. The aim of this study was to provide aeromycological baseline information about Zarqa area, Jordan, for the first time. During the entire survey and from 170 settle plate exposures, a total of 735 mould- and 274 yeast colony-forming units (CFU) were collected. mould colonies were assigned to 35 genera and 59 species. The highest abundance was attributed to Cladosporium with a percentage of 29.1% of the total colony count followed by Fusarium 20%, Alternaria 7.7%, Ulocladium 6.5% Penicillium 4.2% and then Aspergillus 3.6%. Cladosporium showed one peak in October while Aspergillus and Penicillium peaked in September. Fusarium peaked in May and August and Alternaria in March and July. However, Ulocladium showed almost the same abundance from March to June and then in September and December. A double peak in total colony count and fungal diversity was found, the first was in March and the second in November–December. Significant differences of total fungal colony counts favouring the 1500 hours collection time over that at 1000 hours were found between November and January while no such significant differences were obtained between February and April. Our results also indicated differences in species composition between the two periods in different months. Spores of the three abundant species, Cladosporium, Fusarium and Alternaria, might favour high release in the 1500 hours period during winter while having a similar incidence during the two periods in the spring months.  相似文献
