Predators directly impact prey populations through lethal encounters, but understanding nonlethal, indirect effects is also critical because foraging animals often face trade‐offs between predator avoidance and energy intake. Quantifying these indirect effects can be difficult even when it is possible to monitor individuals that regularly interact. Our goal was to understand how movement and resource selection of a predator (wolves; Canis lupus) influence the movement behavior of a prey species (moose; Alces alces). We tested whether moose avoided areas with high predicted wolf resource use in two study areas with differing prey compositions, whether avoidance patterns varied seasonally, and whether daily activity budgets of moose and wolves aligned temporally. We deployed GPS collars on both species at two sites in northern Minnesota. We created seasonal resource selection functions (RSF) for wolves and modeled the relationship between moose first‐passage time (FPT), a method that discerns alterations in movement rates, and wolf RSF values. Larger FPT values suggest rest/foraging, whereas shorter FPT values indicate travel/fleeing. We found that the movements of moose and wolves peaked at similar times of day in both study areas. Moose FPTs were 45% lower in areas most selected for by wolves relative to those avoided. The relationship between wolf RSF and moose FPT was nonlinear and varied seasonally. Differences in FPT between low and high RSF values were greatest in winter (?82.1%) and spring (?57.6%) in northeastern Minnesota and similar for all seasons in the Voyageurs National Park ecosystem. In northeastern Minnesota, where moose comprise a larger percentage of wolf diet, the relationship between moose FPT and wolf RSF was more pronounced (ave. across seasons: ?60.1%) than the Voyageurs National Park ecosystem (?30.4%). These findings highlight the role wolves can play in determining moose behavior, whereby moose spend less time in areas with higher predicted likelihood of wolf resource selection.  相似文献

Diurnal fluctuations of heart rate (HR), body temperature (BT) and locomotor activity (LA) in the unanaesthetized and unrestrained house musk shrew (Suncus murinus) were studied using a telemetry system. Six adult male shrews (Jic:SUN) weighing 60-70 g were used in the present study. They were housed under conditions of 24 C and a 12/12-hr light-dark cycle. HR, BT and LA were recorded over 10 days, following the post-implantation period (10 days or more) of the telemetric transmitter. A clear nocturnal rhythm of LA was shown, while intermittent and short-term LA were shown during the light period. The mean HR was 323.5 +/- 8.8 bpm in the light period and 354.3 +/- 5.2 bpm in the dark period, and the fluctuation of HR showed a nocturnal pattern. A nocturnal pattern was also observed in BT fluctuation, and all animals lowered their body temperature from 35-37 C to approximately 30 C or below, mostly during the light period. The fall of body temperature progressed over 2-3 hr, and then rose to the baseline temperature rapidly within approximately 30 min. While the body temperature fell, HR markedly decreased to approximately 100 bpm. These results suggest that the shrew has unique physiological properties in maintaining metabolic balance which are anticipated to be caused by the dramatic alteration of the autonomic nervous function.  相似文献

We compared the efficiency of succinylcholine chloride, xylazine hydrochloride and carfentanil/xylazine mixtures in immobilizing 364 free-ranging moose (Alces alces) between 1987 and 1997 in Québec (Canada). With succinylcholine chloride (0.070, 0.062, 0.051 mg/kg of estimated body weight for calves, juveniles and adults), 63% of the 252 immobilization attempts led to complete immobilization and marking, whereas 7% of the darted animals died of respiratory paralysis during handling. The moose took an average of 13 min to lay down after darting (down time). Injection of xylazine (3.67-4.22 mg/kg) permitted sedation (the animal laid down but got up again when approached) or complete immobilization in 78% of the 40 darted adult moose, the mean down time being 8.7 min. No mortality was noted with this drug but 58% of the marked animals were only sedated. The use of RX821002A (0.058 mg/kg) as an antagonist, permitted a mean recovery time of 2.8 min after intravenous injection. With the carfentanil/xylazine mixtures (0.0071 and 0.181 mg/kg), 96% of the immobilization trials (n = 72) led to complete (88%) or partial (8%) immobilization, but 6% of the moose died several days after capture. The mean down time was 6.6 min, and injection of naltrexone (0.709 mg/kg) antagonized the effect of the immobilizing agent within 3.7 min. The respiratory rate was higher (P < 0.05) among moose immobilized with xylazine (35/min) than among those immobilized with carfentanil/xylazine mixtures (19/min) but this variation could be related to a longer pursuit time (z = 3.60; P < 0.01) and higher stress levels during handling. Rectal temperature also was higher with xylazine but the difference was small (39.7 vs. 39.3, P = 0.03) and did not differ significantly between the sexes (P > 0.05). Considering loss of materials and helicopter flight time due to non-successful marking trials, carfentanil/xylazine mixtures were the least expensive ($333 Cdn/animal).  相似文献

Wolves (Canis lupus) are recolonizing Scandinavia and becoming a new limiting factor that should be taken into account in the management of moose (Alces alces). However, there is a lack of empirical estimates of moose survival after wolf recolonization. We investigated the effects of wolf abundance, moose litter size (single/twin calves), and climatic factors on annual and seasonal calf survival rates in a moose population in southeast Norway. We used data that were obtained over 7?years by radio-tracking and regular visual observations of 68 moose cows to determine the presence or absence of calves at heel. Annual and winter calf survival rates were 20–40 percentage points lower in the wolf territory compared with previous estimates of moose calf survival in similar areas that lacked wolves. Cause-specific studies of mortality would further enhance our ability to determine the relative role of various limiting factors. Our study suggests that moose managers should regulate quotas to buffer the lower survival rates after wolf recolonization.  相似文献

Methods for cryopreserving spermatozoa and optimizing sperm:egg dilution ratio in African catfish Clarias gariepinus were developed. Five percent to 25% DMSO and methanol were tested as cryoprotectants, by diluting semen in Ginzburg fish ringer and freezing in 1-milliliter cryovials in a programmable freezer. To avoid an excess of spermatozoa per egg, post-thaw semen was diluted 1:20, 1:200 or 1:2,000 before fertilization. Highest hatching rates were obtained by spermatozoa frozen in 10% methanol and post-thaw diluted to 1:200. Then, slow freezing rates (-2, -5 or -10 degrees C/min) to various endpoint temperatures (range -25 to -70 degrees C) before fast freezing in liquid nitrogen (LN2) were evaluated. Hatching rates equal to control (P > 0.05) were obtained by spermatozoa frozen at -5 degrees C/min to -45 to -50 degrees C and at -10 degrees C/min to -55 degrees C. In 3-step freezing programs, at -5 degrees C/min, the effect of holding spermatozoa for 0, 2 or 5 min at -30, -35 or -40 degrees C before fast freezing in LN2 was analyzed. Hatching rates equal to control (P > 0.05) were produced by spermatozoa frozen to, and held at, -35 degrees C for 5 min and at -40 degrees C for 2 or 5 min. Finally, frozen spermatozoa (10% methanol, -5 degrees C/min, 5-min hold at -40 degrees C, LN2, post-thaw diluted to 1:200) were tested in on-farm fertilization conditions. Again, no difference (P > 0.05) in hatching rate was observed between frozen and fresh spermatozoa. Cryopreservation offers utility as a routine method of sperm storage and management for catfish.  相似文献

This work studied the viabilities of five types of cells (two yeast cells, Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 1171 and Candida utilis; two bacterial strains, Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus plantarum; and one human leukemia K562 cell) as a function of cooling rate during freezing. The range of investigated cooling rates extended from 5 to 30,000 degrees C/min. Cell viability was classified into three ranges: (i) high viability for low cooling rates (5 to 180 degrees C/min), which allow cell water outflow to occur completely and do not allow any intracellular crystallization; (ii) low viability for rapid cooling rates (180 to 5,000 degrees C/min), which allow the heat flow to prevail over water outflow (in this case, cell water crystallization would occur as water was flowing out of the cell); (iii) high viability for very high cooling rates (>5,000 degrees C/min), which allow the heat flow to be very rapid and induce intracellular crystallization and/or vitrification before any water outflow from the cell. Finally, an assumption relating cell death to the cell water crystallization as water is flowing out of the cell is made. In addition, this general cell behavior is different for each type of cell and seems to be moderated by the cell size, the water permeability properties, and the presence of a cell wall.  相似文献

Activity patterns in moose and roe deer in a north boreal forest   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The activity patterns of a coarse browser, the moose. Alces alces , and a selective browser, the roe deer, Capreolus capreolus . in a north boreal forest, central Sweden, were compared with respect to time allocated for foraging and processing (ruminating) in different seasons. Data were quantified by measuring 24 h activity patterns which included both the duration and frequency of active and inactive periods. Activity patterns were measured from 9 female moose and 9 roe deer that were radiomarked during April 1974–May 1978 (roe deer) and February 1982–December 1984 (moose). In total, data were available from 4345 h for roe deer and 14745 h for moose. Roe deer differed from moose in having active bouts more evenly distributed over the day. Generally, both species were most active during sunrise and sunset. Total daily active time varied with season, reaching the highest value in late May – early June among roe deer (56.7% of the day) and a month later among moose (51.9%). Both species were least active in February (30–40%). Average length of active bouts did not differ significantly between the species but changed with season (roe deer 48.6–99.2 min, moose 61.6–88.7 min). Average length of inactive bouts varied significantly with season, with moose having consistently longer bouts (89.3–156.3 min) than roe deer (55.8–107.0 min). The number of activity bouts per day were also higher among roe deer. During midsummer, they changed activity nearly twice as many times as moose (26 times d−1 vs 16 times d−1).  相似文献

This study examined the response in terms of heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), haematocrit (Htc), rectal temperature (RT), and some plasma variables in Icelandic horses of different sexes and ages performing the riding assessment in a breed evaluation field test (BEFT). The study was conducted in Iceland on 266 horses (180 mares and 86 stallions, divided into four age groups; 4, 5, 6 and ⩾7 years old). RT and RR were recorded and blood samples were taken before the warm-up and after the riding assessment. Horse HR, velocity and distance were recorded during the warm-up, the riding assessment and a 5-min recovery period. The distance covered in the BEFT was 2.9±0.4 km (range: 1.8 to 3.8 km, n=248), the duration was 9:37±1:22 min:s (range: 5:07 to 15:32 min:s, n=260) and the average speed was 17.8±1.4 km/h (range: 13.2 to 21.3 km/h, n=248). Average HR was 184±13 b.p.m. (range: 138 to 210 b.p.m., n=102) and peak HR 224±9 b.p.m. (range: 195 to 238 b.p.m., n=102), and 36% of the BEFT was performed at HR ⩾200 b.p.m. Post-exercise plasma lactate concentration (Lac) was 18.0±6.5 mmol/l (range: 2.1 to 34.4 mmol/l, n=266), and there was an increase in total plasma protein, plasma creatine kinase and aspartate amino transferase concentration, as well as RR, RT and Htc. Stallions covered a longer total distance (in the warm-up and BEFT) (P<0.05), at a faster speed during BEFT (P<0.001) than mares and had higher Htc and lower HR and post-exercise Lac values. There were few effects of age, but the 4- and 5-year-old horses had lower Htc than older horses and 4-year-old horses had higher post-exercise RR than older horses, although they were ridden for a shorter distance, shorter duration and at lower peak velocity (P<0.1). The results showed that the riding assessment in the BEFT is a high-intensity exercise. The results also showed that aerobic fitness was higher in stallions and that age had a limited effect on the physiological response. It is suggested that these results should be used as a guide for the development of training programmes and fitness tests in Icelandic horses that would improve both performance and welfare of the horse.  相似文献

Summary In southwestern Québec, non-harvested moose populations stabilize at a density of 0.40 animal·km-2. In an attempt to test population regulation by food resources, we investigated moose body condition near this equilibrium density (0.37) and at 2 lower densities (0.22 and 0.17). Annual population growth rates were evaluated at 4, 18, and 24% respectively. We predicted that moose in the high density area would exhibit growth retardation and poorer body condition, compared to moose in the lower density areas. Measurements of head length, cranial breadth, heart weight, and kidney weight were collected from 443 moose killed during the regular autumn harvesting seasons of 1981 and 1982. There was no indication that body condition was poorer at high moose density, and hence no evidence that foraging conditions were deteriorated. We concluded that food limitation was not sufficient to explain the differences in population growth rates. Predation by wolves and/or black bears is presented as an alternative and testable hypothesis.  相似文献

Trenching (Tr), root biomass regression (RR), and root excising (RE) methods were used to estimate the contribution of root (RR) and heterotrophic (HR) respiration to soil respiration (SR) in a cool-temperate deciduous forest in central Japan. The contribution ratios of RR to SR were 23 % (?16 to 46 %), 11 % (?19 to 61 %), and 115 % (20 to 393 %), as estimated by the Tr, RR, and RE methods, respectively. The contribution ratio showed clear seasonal variation with high values in summer for the Tr method, while they were undetectable for the RR and RE methods because of some methodological problems. These results suggest the Tr method is the best of the three methods used to estimate the contribution ratio of RR and HR to SR in the forest. Annual SR, RR, and HR rates, estimated by the Tr method, were 479, 369, 110 gC m?2 year?1, respectively. The seasonal variation of SR was mainly influenced by HR (77 %) throughout the year, while the influence of RR on SR was strongest in summer (46 %). This effect occurred because RR (Q 10 = 7.5) is more sensitive to temperature than HR (Q 10 = 3.2). Also, the contribution of fine RR to total RR was higher than that of coarse RR because of high respiratory activity (Q 10 and R 10) as well as the large biomass of fine roots. These results suggest that each component of SR responds differently to the same environmental factors and their relative influence on SR changes across the seasons.  相似文献

Previous studies on moose Alces alces have suggested that interactions with humans may trigger anti-predator behaviors and generate a demographical cost. Therefore, we hypothesized that disturbances from small and big game hunting may have negative effects on moose movements, diurnal activity, and activity range. Using location data from 64 moose equipped with GPS collars from three populations (Low Alpine, Inland, Coastal) with different temporal human presence and spatial accessibility, we evaluated the impact of hunting on moose activity rhythms. On average, female moose in the low human population density (Low Alpine) area (<0.5/km2) had significantly lower movement rates during moose hunting season, but variation in movement rates among individuals were higher compared with female moose in regions with denser human populations (6–24/km2). We found no evidence that reproductive status influenced female moose sensitivity to disturbance. As expected, females used smaller activity ranges and were less active nocturnally than males. The high within-group variation suggests that current hunting disturbance levels do not alter moose population behavior in general. Our data indicate that alterations in movement were related to rutting activity, not human disturbance induced by hunting. In line with behavioral theory, our study suggests that some individuals were more sensitive to hunting disturbance than the general population. Our work suggests that individual moose may perceive human predation risk to be similar to other predation risks.  相似文献

Twenty-one moose were captured on Isle Royale between 28 May and 2 June 1984 at licks on the western end of the island. The animals were darted, at ranges of 10 to 35 m, with 3-cc dart syringes containing 3 or 4 mg of carfentanil and 100 or 175 mg of xylazine. Three animals were drugged with carfentanil alone. Immobilization time ranged from 2.5 to 6 min. There was no excitement phase evident in 18 of the animals and they rarely moved more than 30 m after darting. Reversal was begun at 30 to 90 min after darting using naloxone and diprenorphine given intramuscularly (i.m.) and intravenously (i.v.). Recovery time varied from 10 min to 3 hr with the longer times occurring at the higher doses of immobilizing drugs. Two animals died within 30 hr, one as the result of aspiration of rumen contents and the other was unable to get on its feet and was euthanized. Analysis of blood samples from the 18 moose immobilized with the drug combination yielded hemoglobin values of 13.1 +/- 0.3 g/dl, hematocrit: 37.6 +/- 0.7%, red blood cells: 5.46 +/- 0.1 million/microliter, leucocytes: 6.1 +/- 0.4 thousand/microliter, and serum urea nitrogen: 29.3 +/- 1.6 mg/dl. Our experience indicated that quiet, undisturbed moose can be immobilized with 3 mg carfentanil and 100 mg or less of xylazine.  相似文献

1. Heart rates of beaver (Castor canadensis) under free-ranging captive conditions for active behaviors and resting in water (approximately 121 beats/min) were significantly (P less than 0.01) higher than for resting on land (100 beats/min). 2. Although no transient recovery tachycardia was evident in swimming heart rates following diving, average swimming heart rates were higher (127 beats/min) after diving than after other precursor behaviors (123 beats/min). 3. Beaver exhibited bradycardia when sleeping (75 beats/min), diving (61 beats/min), and when threatened on land (57 beats/min). 4. The respiratory sinus arrhythmia indicated a respiratory rate of 15 breaths/min. 5. Cold temperatures (approximately 0 degree C) elicited higher heart rates than did warmer temperatures (approximately 20 degrees C) in active, non-diving behaviors (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

The effect of reaction time (0–90 min), catalyst concentration (0.2–0.5% CH3ONa powder), and temperature (60–90 °C) of chemical interesterification (CIE) was studied to determine the optimal conditions for maximal change of solid fat content (SFC) in minimal time in a beef tallow (BT)/canola oil (CaO) blend (80:20, w/w, herein after referred to as BT/CaO blend 80:20). The optimal conditions were obtained as: CH3ONa 0.4%, 60 °C, 30 min. BT/CaO blends (60:40, 65:35, 70:30, 75:25, 80:20, and 85:15) were each interesterified on a laboratory scale under afore-determined optimal conditions, and the corresponding 12 samples, before and after CIE, were characterized in terms of the SFC profile and compatibility. SFC profiling showed an increase in SFC (<5%) between 5 and 21.1 °C and a slight drop (<3%) in SFC between 40 and 45 °C for the interesterified blends. Compatibility analysis showed the presence of monotectic systems in original blends, proven through isothermal solid diagrams and isosolid diagrams. The incompatibility among the fats and oils was eliminated after reaction and the solution behavior shifted to a continuous solid solution. The interesterified 85:15, 80:20/75:25, 70:30, 65:35, and 60:40 BT/CaO blends displayed characteristics suited to application, respectively, for bakery shortenings, frying fats, all-purpose bakery shortenings, and bakery and roll-in margarines. The model shortenings produced from interesterified blends had more stable crystal morphology, crystal sizes, and double-chain (2L) stacking β′ polymorphs than blended shortenings under temperature fluctuation storage. Sensory analysis also showed that the former had less graininess and better spreadability than the latter during storage.  相似文献

The recent development in Global Positioning System (GPS) techniques has started a new era in predation studies. Estimates of kill rates based on animal movements and GPS relocation clusters have proven to be valid in several obligatory carnivores. The main focus has been to obtain accurate mean predation estimates for the management of wildlife populations. We present a model to estimate individual kill rates of moose calves by adult female brown bears in Sweden, based on spatiotemporal clustering of 30,889 bear GPS relocations and 71 moose calves verified killed during 714 field investigations in 2004–2006. In this virtually single-predator single large prey system, the omnivorous brown bear is an efficient predator on moose calves up to 4 weeks of age. The top model set only included models with cluster radii of 30 m or 50 m, indicating very high kill-site fidelity. The best model included a cluster radius of 30 m and number of periods of bear activity at the kill site as a single covariate. The mean estimated individual kill rate of 7.6 ± 0.71 (n = 18, ± SE) moose calves per calving season is comparable to the estimate of 6.8 from a previous study of radio-tracked moose in our study area, though at a lower moose/bear ratio. The mean annual kill rates varied from 6.1 to 9.4 calves per bear. The estimated individual kill rates ranged from 2 to 15 calves per season, indicating a large individual variation in hunting skills and possibly effort. Predation and livestock depredation represent a core conflict between humans and carnivores in rural Scandinavia. Accurate predation estimates represent an important step in quantifying costs of carnivores and reducing human–carnivore conflicts. Our technique may be applied in the exploration of predation mechanisms and predator–prey interactions, and contribute to the old and global debate of problem individuals in livestock depredation. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The nitric oxide (NO) system is involved in the regulation of the cardiovascular system in controlling central and peripheral vascular tone and cardiac functions. It was the aim of this study to investigate in wild-type C57BL/6 and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) knock-out mice (eNOS-/-) the contribution of NO on the circadian rhythms in heart rate (HR), motility (motor activity [MA]), and body temperature (BT) under various environmental conditions. Experiments were performed in 12:12 h of a light:dark cycle (LD), under free-run in total darkness (DD), and after a phase delay shift of the LD cycle by -6 h (i.e., under simulation of a westward time zone transition). All parameters were monitored by radiotelemetry in freely moving mice. In LD, no significant differences in the rhythms of HR and MA were observed between the two strains of mice. BT, however, was significantly lower during the light phase in eNOS-/- mice, resulting in a significantly greater amplitude. The period of the free-running rhythm in DD was slightly shorter for all variables, though not significant. In general, rhythmicity was greater in eNOS-/- than in C57 mice both in LD and DD. After a delay shift of the LD cycle, HR and BT were resynchronized to the new LD schedule within 5-6 days, and resynchronization of MA occurred within 2-3 days. The results in telemetrically instrumented mice show that complete knock-out of the endothelial NO system—though expressed in the suprachiasmatic nuclei and in peripheral tissues—did not affect the circadian organization of heart rate and motility. The circadian regulation of the body temperature was slightly affected in eNOS-/- mice.  相似文献

We studied the characteristics of the rhythmicity of heart rate (HR), body temperature (BT), locomotor activity (LA) and autonomic nervous activity in bronchial-hypersensitive (BHS) and bronchial-hyposensitive (BHR) guinea pigs. For this purpose, HR, BT, LA, and electrocardiogram (ECG) were recorded from conscious and unrestrained guinea pigs using a telemetry system. Autonomic nervous activity was analyzed by power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Nocturnal patterns, in which the values in the dark phase (20:00-06:00) were higher than those in the light phase (06:00-20:00), were observed in HR, BT and LA in both strains of guinea pigs. The autonomic nervous activity in BHS guinea pigs showed a daily pattern, although BHR guinea pigs did not show such a rhythmicity. The high frequency (HF) power in BHS guinea pigs was higher than that in BHR guinea pigs throughout the day. Moreover, the low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio in BHS guinea pigs was lower than that in BHR guinea pigs throughout the day. These results suggest that parasympathetic nervous activity may be predominant in BHS guinea pigs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Given recent actions to increase sustained yield of moose (Alces alces) in Alaska, USA, we examined factors affecting yield and moose demographics and discussed related management. Prior studies concluded that yield and density of moose remain low in much of Interior Alaska and Yukon, Canada, despite high moose reproductive rates, because of predation from lightly harvested grizzly (Ursus arctos) and black bear (U. americanus) and wolf (Canis lupus) populations. Our study area, Game Management Unit (GMU) 20A, was also in Interior Alaska, but we describe elevated yield and density of moose. Prior to our study, a wolf control program (1976–1982) helped reverse a decline in the moose population. Subsequent to 1975, moose numbers continued a 28-year, 7-fold increase through the initial 8 years of our study (λB1 = 1.05 during 1996–2004, peak density = 1,299 moose/1,000 km2). During these initial 8 hunting seasons, reported harvest was composed primarily of males ( = 88%). Total harvest averaged 5% of the prehunt population and 57 moose/1,000 km2, the highest sustained harvest-density recorded in Interior Alaska for similar-sized areas. In contrast, sustained total harvests of <10 moose/1,000 km2 existed among low-density, predator-limited moose populations in Interior Alaska (≤417 moose/1,000 km2). During the final 3 years of our study (2004–2006), moose numbers declined (λB2 = 0.96) as intended using liberal harvests of female and male moose ( = 47%) that averaged 7% of the prehunt population and 97 moose/1,000 km2. We intentionally reduced high densities in the central half of GMU 20A (up to 1,741 moose/1,000 km2 in Nov) because moose were reproducing at the lowest rate measured among wild, noninsular North American populations. Calf survival was uniquely high in GMU 20A compared with 7 similar radiocollaring studies in Alaska and Yukon. Low predation was the proximate factor that allowed moose in GMU 20A to increase in density and sustain elevated yields. Bears killed only 9% of the modeled postcalving moose population annually in GMU 20A during 1996–2004, in contrast to 18–27% in 3 studies of low-density moose populations. Thus, outside GMU 20A, higher bear predation rates can create challenges for those desiring rapid increases in sustained yield of moose. Wolves killed 8–15% of the 4 postcalving moose populations annually (10% in GMU 20A), hunters killed 2–6%, and other factors killed 1–6%. Annually during the increase phase in GMU 20A, calf moose constituted 75% of the predator-killed moose and predators killed 4 times more moose than hunters killed. Wolf predation on calves remained largely additive at the high moose densities studied in GMU 20A. Sustainable harvest-densities of moose can be increased several-fold in most areas of Interior Alaska where moose density and moose: predator ratios are lower than in GMU 20A and nutritional status is higher. Steps include 1) reducing predation sufficient to allow the moose population to grow, and 2) initiating harvest of female moose to halt population growth and maximize harvest after density-dependent moose nutritional indices reach or approach the thresholds we previously published.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible differences in the postexercise cutaneous vasodilatory response between men and women. Fourteen subjects (7 men and 7 women) of similar age, body composition, and fitness status remained seated resting for 15 min or cycled for 15 min at 70% of peak oxygen consumption followed by 15 min of seated recovery. Subjects then donned a liquid-conditioned suit. Mean skin temperature was clamped at approximately 34 degrees C for 15 min. Mean skin temperature was then increased at a rate of 4.3 +/- 0.8 degrees C/h while local skin temperature was clamped at 34 degrees C. Skin blood flow was measured continuously at two forearm skin sites, one with (UT) and without (BT) (treated with bretylium tosylate) intact alpha-adrenergic vasoconstrictor activity. The exercise threshold for cutaneous vasodilation in women (37.51 +/- 0.08 degrees C and 37.58 +/- 0.04 degrees C for UT and BT, respectively) was greater than that measured in men (37.33 +/- 0.06 degrees C and 37.35 +/- 0.06 degrees C for UT and BT, respectively) (P < 0.05). Core temperatures were similar to baseline before the start of whole body warming for all conditions. Postexercise heart rate (HR) for the men (77 +/- 4 beats/min) and women (87 +/- 6 beats/min) were elevated above baseline (61 +/- 3 and 68 +/- 4 beats/min for men and women, respectively), whereas mean arterial pressure (MAP) for the men (84 +/- 3 mmHg) and women (79 +/- 3 mmHg) was reduced from baseline (93 +/- 3 and 93 +/- 4 mmHg for men and women, respectively) (P < 0.05). A greater increase in HR and a greater decrease in the MAP postexercise were noted in women (P < 0.05). No differences in core temperature, HR, and MAP were measured in the no-exercise trial. The postexercise threshold for cutaneous vasodilation measured at the UT and BT sites for men (37.15 +/- 0.03 degrees C and 37.16 +/- 0.04 degrees C, respectively) and women (37.36 +/- 0.05 degrees C and 37.42 +/- 0.03 degrees C, respectively) were elevated above no exercise (36.94 +/- 0.07 degrees C and 36.97 +/- 0.05 degrees C for men and 36.99 +/- 0.09 degrees C and 37.03 +/- 0.11 degrees C for women for the UT and BT sites, respectively) (P < 0.05). A difference in the magnitude of the thresholds was measured between women and men (P < 0.05). We conclude that women have a greater postexercise onset threshold for cutaneous vasodilation than do men and that the primary mechanism influencing the difference between men and women in postexercise skin blood flow is likely the result of an altered active vasodilatory response and not an increase in adrenergic vasoconstrictor tone.  相似文献
