The prey selection of larvae of three common littoral fish species (pike, Esox lucius; roach,Rutilus rutilus; and three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus) was studied experimentally in the laboratory by using natural zooplankton assemblages. Zooplankton prey was offered at four different concentrations to study the functional responses of the planktivores. The diets of pike and sticklebacks were formed mainly of copepod juveniles and adults, which dominated the prey communities, although sticklebacks ate also cladocerans. The diet of roach larvae consisted of rotifers, cladocerans and copepods, without prey selection, in equal proportions indicating a more omnivorous diet. All fish larvae were able to feed selectively although in sticklebacks prey selection was less pronounced. Pike and roach larvae preferred large prey to smaller prey types. Patterns of prey selection are discussed in the context of size-selection theory and apparent vs. true selection.  相似文献

Two readily distinguishable species of Chydorus sphaericus sens. lat. occur in Salmon Lake, Montana, differing from each other in size and shape of rostrum, headpore configuration, frequency of doubling of teeth on the postabdomen, pattern of reticulation of the shell, and morphology of the mature male, especially the postabdomen, postabdominal claws, copulatory hooks, and rostrum. In any such comparisons, individual specimens are not sufficient; populations are needed to sort out morphological characters associated with instar and sex and character's that change with increasing body size. Comparison of population structure and stage of reproduction can be accomplished by a size-frequency distribution and by specific morphological characters that enable the three male instars to be recognized individually. One species, thought at first to be Chydorus herrmanni, is very close to Chydorus sphaericus sens. str. from Denmark. The other taxon with a short, generally blunt labrum, is described as the new species Chydorus brevilabris. Because of morphological diversity among the entities currently listed as Chydorus sphaericus from around the World, it is certain that a complex of species is represented. To facilitate the eventual resolution of this problem, the population in Sjaelsø, Sjaelland, Denmark has arbitrarily been selected as the standard of comparison, and from this population a neotype and several allotypes have been designated. Cursory examination of various available populations suggests that C. sphaericus sens. str. and C. brevilabris represent a major dichotomy in the sphaericus complex, each branch consisting of an unknown number of closely-related species. Cautions are voiced against assuming that Chydorus sphaericus is a single cosmopolitan and ubiquitous species. This study has been aided by grant GB-29725 for the work in Denmark in 1971–72 and by my present grant DEB 76-20237, both from the National Science Foundation. I am indebted to D. F. Brakke for the samples from Salmon Lake and neighboring localities in Montana and information concerning these localities, and to Brenda J. Hann for dissections and drawings of trunk limbs and help in their interpretation. I am also indebted to Geoffrey Fryer, whose innocent inquiry precipitated this study.  相似文献

Chydorus biovatus differs from C. sphaericus sens. str. in that the ephippial female carries two resting eggs, for which the brood pouch is expanded dorsally. resulting in a sharp angle in lateral contour near the junction of the head and shell and in the postpore distance being much elongated. The mature male has the pre-anal angle of the postabdomen rounded and the rostrum broadly rounded, both features being much different than in C. sphaericus sens. str. In North America there is a progressive replacement of C. brevilabris-group species in the South to C. sphaericus-group species in the Far North. Production of two resting eggs by Chydorus piger is recorded.  相似文献

A quantitative study was made of the littoral microcrustaceans in a bog pond and an acid marsh located on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, from May, 1972 to May, 1973. A total of 17 species of Cladocera and 7 species of Copepoda were found in La Manche Marsh, while 21 species of Cladocera and 5 species of Copepoda were collected in Round Pond. The maximum standing stocks were similar in the two localities. The dominant forms in the summer and fall in La Manche Marsh were Cladocera: Acantholeberis curvirostris, Biapertura intermedia, Chydorus sphaericus, and Ilyocryptus spinifer. In the winter the copepod, Macrocyclops albidus, was dominant, while Cyclops varicans rubellus was the most abundant species in the spring. Round Pond also was dominated by Cladocera in the summer and fall; namely, Acroperus alonoides, Alona rustica, Alonella excisa, Chydorus sphaericus, and Sida crystallina. The copepods, Eucyclops agilis and Macrocyclops albidus, were dominant in the winter and early spring.  相似文献

Occurrence of Cladocera (Crustacea) in subterranean waters in Yugoslavia   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0
Contrary to some localities in France and Spain, Cladocera occur in hypogean waters in Yugoslavia very sporadically. Beside the stygobitic species, Alona hercegovinae from caves and Alona smirnovi from interstitial waters, particularly some other Chydoridae seem to be suited for hypogean life. Chydorus sphaericus, reputed as one of the most euryoecious cladocerans, occurs also the deepest in interstitial waters as well as in caves. Other species, found in hypogean waters are Simocephalus vetulus, Ilyocryptus sordidus, Eurycercus lamellatus, Chydorus ovalis, Leydigia leydigi, Acroperus harpae and Biapertura affnis.  相似文献

We analysed the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton along a profile of 10 stations from the shore to the pelagic zone from April to September 1988, the period when the larvae and juveniles Rutilus rutilus, the most abundant species in the Lake, are in the littoral zone. The digestive tracts of the young roach were analysed. They fed essentially on rotifers and on cladocerans. For comparison, zooplankton was also analysed at one littoral area without fish fry. There was an increase of cladoceran density from the vegetated nearshore zone to the offshore zone. Considering the density of Bosmina longirostris, Daphnia longispina, Chydorus sphaericus and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, we observed a different distribution pattern in the course of the year. In the nearshore zone, the relative abundance of small species, Bosmina and Chydorus, was much higher than that of the larger Daphnia. From April to September, predation pressure mainly affected the smallest species: in contrast to the inshore station without fish fry, the density of Bosmina decreased in May in the littoral with fish. Chydorus was concentrated in the littoral between February and April, then grew into the pelagic zone, where predation pressure obviously was low during the warm season. The number of Daphnia, which was eaten by the fish fry at any time, remained low in the nearshore zone, which suggests that the presence of fish may cause Daphnia to avoid this zone. Ceriodaphnia which was not affected by this predation, was scarce in the nearshore zone during mid-summer. The low density of the cladocerans in the nearshore zone is likely associated with vertebrate predation by roach fry and juveniles, the result of such a process being either a depletion in density of the prey, or an avoidance behaviour.  相似文献

Although similar patterns of phenotypic diversification are often observed in phylogenetically independent lineages, differences in the magnitude and direction of phenotypic divergence have been also observed among independent lineages, even when exposed to the same ecological gradients. The stickleback family is a good model with which to explore the ecological and genetic basis of parallel and nonparallel patterns of phenotypic evolution, because there are a variety of populations and species that are locally adapted to divergent environments. Although the patterns of phenotypic divergence as well as the genetic and ecological mechanisms have been well characterized in threespine sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, we know little about the patterns of phenotypic diversification in other stickleback lineages. In eastern Hokkaido, Japan, there are three species of ninespine sticklebacks, Pungitius tymensis and the freshwater type and the brackish‐water type of the P. pungitiusP. sinensis species complex. They utilize divergent habitats along coast–stream gradients of rivers. Here, we investigated genetic, ecological and phenotypic divergence among three species of Japanese ninespine sticklebacks. Divergence in trophic morphology and salinity tolerance occurred in the direction predicted by the patterns observed in threespine sticklebacks. However, the patterns of divergence in armour plate were different from those previously found in threespine sticklebacks. Furthermore, the genetic basis of plate variation may differ from that in threespine sticklebacks. Because threespine sticklebacks are well‐established model for evolutionary research, the sympatric trio of ninespine sticklebacks will be an invaluable resource for ecological and genetic studies on both common and lineage‐specific patterns of phenotypic diversification.  相似文献

The results of a parasitological study of the two species of sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius and Gasterosteus aculeatus) inhabiting the Kola region are presented. The 42 and 14 species of parasite were found in the nine-spined and three-spined stickleback, respectively. The paucity of the parasite fauna in the three-spined stickleback is observed. Distribution of parasites in Kola waterbodies and ecological peculiarities in system "parasite-host" are presented.  相似文献

Toxicity of a soluble peptide from Microcystis sp. to zooplankton and fish   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
SUMMARY.
  • 1 A soluble cell fraction lethal to Daphnia magna was isolated by the disruption of net phytoplankton from eutrophic Aculeo Lake. The phytoplankton of this lake is dominated by Microcystis sp.
  • 2 The soluble fraction was also lethal to common native zooplankton, including the rotifers Keratella sp., Trichocerca similis, the copepod Boeckella sp., and the cladoceran Chydorus sphaericus. In addition, a partially purified soluble component of the lethal fraction caused the death of the fish Gambusia affinis.
  • 3 The specific toxicity of the soluble fraction from phytoptankton varied four- to six-fold seasonally with peaks during periods of warm temperature.
  • 4 Our results suggest that releases of a toxic peptide from Microcystis sp. may be the cause of massive fish kills at the study site, Aculeo Lake.

The response of three chydorid species to temperature, pH and food   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The responses of three chydorid species, Chydorus sphaericus(O.F. Müller), Alona affinis (Leydig) and Alonopsis elongata (Sars) to temperature, pH and food type were examined. Egg development time of all species decreased with increasing temperature, although the degree of change was different for each species. C. sphaericus had the fastest development time at all temperatures, and A. elongata the slowest. pH also affected the egg development time of each species differently. A. elongata failed to reproduce at low and medium pH, the egg development time of C. sphaericus was fastest at high pH while that of A. affinis was fastest at low pH. Food type was found to have significant effects on the population growth of individual species. C. sphaericus populations grew equally well in all three food types provided, and grew more than the other two species when fed on an algae culture, and filtered pond water. A. affinisand A. elongata populations grew best when fed on a detritus food source. The responses of each species to the different variables tested are discussed in relation to field observations of their distribution and abundance.  相似文献

1. We describe the interactions during mating in Chydorus sphaericus, a cyclical parthenogenetic anomopod. Mating behaviour is more complex than previously assumed, with evidence for a diffusible chemical to which males react at the onset of mating, for reproductive isolation, and for postcopulatory mate guarding. 2. During mating, the male and female form a ‘mating cross’ that may be maintained for several hours, while copulation itself typically lasts less than a minute. Furthermore, males invariably attach to the right valve of females. Copulation involves intromission of the postabdomen between the valves, so that the gonopores approach the left ovarium. 3. This behaviour is reflected in the morphology of both sexes: males have a specialised anterior valve margin, postabdomen, first limb and rostrum, under selective pressure for successful mate guarding and copulation, while gamogenetic females have asymmetric ovaries, and a species‐specific setulation of the valves. Males of the structurally related Chydorus ovalis react to the presence of C. sphaericus, but fail to dock to females, suggesting a lock‐antilock element in the reproductive isolation of both species. 4. The morphological and ethological adaptations in C. sphaericus suggest that there is a strong selective pressure on mating behaviour in this cyclical parthenogen and specifically towards the formation of the ‘mating cross’.  相似文献

Chydorus arcticus n.sp. (Cladocera: Chydoridae: Chydorinae) is described, figured, and differentiated from the closely relatedC. sphaericus (O.F. Müller, 1785). The known distribution of the species is given, and some aspects of speciation of arctic crustaceans are pointed out.  相似文献

We studied specific features of development of the gill system during ontogenesis of the zebrafish Danio rerio and ninespine stickleback Pungitius pungitius, which differ in the rates of gill system, development. Although the development of sticklebacks proceeds in nature at lower temperatures than for zebrafish, the rate of gill formation in the former is higher. These differences are related to the specific conditions in which these fish develop: embryonic and larval development of the stickleback proceeds in bodies of water with a lower oxygen content than for zebrafish, and this results in the adaptive alteration of the rate of gill system development. Differentiation of gills in the zebrafish is accompanied by a manifold increase in the oxygen consumption rate. At different developmental stages, the incremental rates of oxygen consumption and increase in the body mass of the zebrafish larvae and fry differed significantly.  相似文献

A random sample of 17 threespine stickleback nests was analysed using DNA fingerprinting. DNA from the guardian male and a random subsample of 10 fry per nest was probed with pYNZ132, a human single–locus VNTR probe which detects a multilocus fingerprint pattern in sticklebacks. Band–sharing indices (BSIs, the proportion of bands shared by two individuals) between the guardian male and its fry were calculated. In 147 of a total of 170 pair–wise comparisons the BSIs varied between 0.40 and 0.77. The guardian male was thought to be the true father of all these fry (p < 0.10). For the remaining 23 fry the BSIs varied between 0.09 and 0.34, suggesting that these fry were fathered by a different male (P<0.06). Once the paternal bands in each legitimate fry were determined, the remaining (i.e. maternal) bands among these fry were compared. Based on the BSIs obtained, the minimum number of females that spawned per nest was determined, and the maternal DNA fingerprints of the legitimate fry were traced back. In one nest five eggs of the sample had been fertilized by a sneaker, in two nests the guardian male had stolen eggs from a rival male, and in another nest one of the eggs was fertilized by a sneaker and three were stolen eggs.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity may be favored in generalist populations if it increases niche width, even in temporally constant environments. Phenotypic plasticity can increase the frequency of extreme phenotypes in a population and thus allow it to make use of a wide resource spectrum. Here we test the prediction that generalist populations should be more plastic than specialists. In a common-garden experiment, we show that solitary, generalist populations of threespine sticklebacks inhabiting small coastal lakes of British Columbia have a higher degree of morphological plasticity than the more specialized sympatric limnetic and benthic species. The ancestral marine stickleback showed low levels of plasticity similar to those of sympatric sticklebacks, implying that the greater plasticity of the generalist population has evolved recently. Measurements of wild populations show that those with mean trait values intermediate between the benthic and limnetic values indeed have higher morphological variation. Our data indicate that plasticity can evolve rapidly after colonization of a new environment in response to changing niche use.  相似文献

Particle selection over a broad size range by crustacean zooplankton   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. Preferences for particles over a broad size range were assessed in four crustacean zooplankton species under field conditions. The particles employed were six spherical algae with diameters of 2, 6, 13, 19, 38 and 61 μm. 2. Diaphanosoma brachyurum and Daphnia cucullata preferred the two smallest particles, Chydorus sphaericus the three smallest and Eudiaptomus gracilis the 19 μm particle. 3. These size preferences agree well with earlier determinations based on seston particles in the same lake, indicating consistent size preferences by these species over a broad size range.  相似文献

Predation can promote divergence between prey populations and contribute to ecological speciation. In theory, predators can also constrain prey population divergence. In coastal British Columbia, Canada, Gasterosteus aculeatus (three‐spined stickleback) species pairs only occur in lakes with a single species of predatory fish: Oncorhynchus clarkii (the cutthroat trout). Similar lakes containing additional predatory fish species (Cottus asper, prickly sculpins; Oncorhynchus mykiss, rainbow trout) contain only single species of morphologically intermediate stickleback, suggesting that these predators prevent the coexistence of stickleback species pairs. We conducted a mesocosm experiment to investigate how prickly sculpins might constrain divergence, by quantifying their impact on survival and natural selection on antipredator (armour) traits in F2 stickleback from a cross between ecologically divergent populations. We tested three hypotheses: (1) sculpin predation on sticklebacks reduces survival in a way that could result in their exclusion from certain niches; (2) sculpins compete with stickleback; (3) sculpins respond to prey vulnerabilities in similar ways to cutthroat trout, tending to constrain rather than to enhance divergence. We found that sculpins significantly reduce stickleback survival, that their presence per se does not reduce growth in stickleback, and that predation did not result in selection on any of the armour traits measured, or on gill raker length, which is an important trophic trait. These results tend to refute hypotheses (2) and (3), while supporting hypothesis (1). © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 877–885.  相似文献
