Summary Host size of Pteromalus puparum, a gregarious pupal parasitoid, shows a wide inter- and intraspecific variation. Experiments were made to study the regulation of the number and sex ratio of progeny per host by the parasitoid. The parasitoid could discriminate inter- and intraspecific size differences of the host and regulate the number of eggs according to the host size when a single female attacked the host. The sex ratio of progeny (proportion males) was about 0.1. The number of progeny laid by the female agreed with the energetically most efficient number og eggs in order to maximize total weight of progeny per host but not with the reproductively most efficient number of eggs to maximize the total fecundity of the progeny. The parasitoid laid smaller number of eggs in a half buried host, but the number was much larger than a half of those in a fully exposed host. When more than one female attacked a single host, the number and sex ratio of progeny per host increased with the number of females attacking the host, but the number of progeny per female decreased. The change of the sex ratio agreed with the prediction of the local mate competition model.  相似文献

Peristenus spretus Chen et van Achterberg (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid of the plant bug Apolygus lucorum (Hemiptera: Miridae), has been studied for use in augmentative biological control in China. Under laboratory conditions, we explored the development, survival, age-specific and potential lifetime fecundity, oviposition period and progeny sex ratio of P. spretus reared at six constant temperatures (15°C, 19°C, 23°C, 27°C, 31°C, 35°C) on the second instar nymphs of A. lucorum. At 15°C, male and female P. spretus took 48.7 ± 0.3 and 52.5 ± 0.3 days to complete their immature development, while developmental time was reduced by more than half at 23°C and 27°C. The parasitoid can only develop to the larval stage at 31°C and neither larva nor pupa survived at 35°C. The estimated lower developmental threshold of the immature stage was 7.3°C. When parasitoid adults were exposed at 15°C, females laid 90% of their eggs at first 19 days of oviposition and had an extended reproductive life. In contrast, females held at 27°C laid most of their eggs (90%) in their first of 10 days of oviposition and had shorter longevity. The highest potential lifetime fecundity of P. spretus was 671.2 ± 34.7 SE eggs produced over 23.4 ± 1.4 SE days at 23°C. At 15°C, 19°C and 23°C, sex ratios of reared parasitoids were male-biased, but at 27°C there was no male bias.  相似文献

A laboratory study of preimaginal development, adult longevity and fecundity ofEncarsia inaron (Walker) was conducted. Preimaginal developmental times varied with temperature, from 55–60 d at 15±1°C to 14–17 d at 30±1°C. No development took place at 10°C, which was approximately the developmental minimum estimated from regression analysis of developmental rates vs. temperature in the range 15–30°C. Development was slowed and survival was reduced at 32°C. Females lived an average of 18.6 days and laid a average of 159 eggs/female at 25°C. At 25°C, average preimaginal survival was 59.3%, and the sex ratio was 73.5% female. The net reproductive rate (R0) forE. inaron calculated from these studies was 69.3, while the intrinsic rate of natural increase was 0.1686 individuals per individual per day. Oviposition was concentrated slightly in third instar nymphs of the host.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the effect of selected temperatures on the development, mortality, sex ratio, and emergence rate of Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura reared from a factitious host, oak silkworm, Antheraea pernyi (Guérin-Méneville) eggs. The comparison tests were conducted to investigate the fecundity on Dendrolimus spectabilis (Butler) eggs of T. dendrolimi reared from natural and factitious hosts, and artificial hosts. Developmental periods from egg to adult of T. dendrolimi reared at 26, 28, 30, and 32°C were 10.9, 9.6, 9.0, 8.6 days, respectively. Emergence rates of T. dendrolimi decreased 78.0, 88.4, 60.7, and 50.1% as temperature increased. The progeny sex ratios (i.e., females per male) were 7.3, 8.4, 8.2 and 6.9 at the respective temperatures. When adult T. dendrolimi emerged from A. pernyi eggs were kept in dark conditions for storage at different temperatures for 34 days, their mortality increased as temperature increased: 0% at 0°C; 10% at 4°C; 40% at 6°C; 50% at 18°C and 100% at ≥26°C. The fecundity of T. dendrolimi reared from three different hosts was investigated on D. spectabilis eggs. During the first day, the adult T. dendrolimi reared on A. pernyi eggs laid most eggs (99.0±10.7), followed by those reared on artificial hosts (76.6±24.5) and D. spectabilis eggs (63.4±35.9). Over the entire lifespan, T. dendrolimi reared on D. spectabilis eggs produced the highest number of eggs (218.0±27.9), followed by A. pernyi eggs (104.0±44.7) and artificial host (98.2±37.1). These results suggest that the temperature and three hosts factors had an effect on rearing of the T. dendrolimi on the factitious host, A. pernyi eggs.  相似文献

The Oriental fruit moth, Cydia molesta (Busck, 1916) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is a key pest of fruit and is widely distributed around the world. There are important connections between its behavior and biology and its management in agriculture, but few studies have investigated the associations between adult behaviors and oviposition. In this study, adult emergence, mating, and reproduction were investigated under laboratory and field conditions. The ratio of females to males at eclosion was approximately 1:1. When one virgin female had access to one virgin male, 66% and 34% of the couples copulated just once and twice, respectively; and the infertility rate of eggs (21.39 ± 1.25%) did not vary daily. Males, given access to one new female daily, could copulate multiple times, whereas females seldom mated more than once, indicating a male-biased operational sex ratio, but mating status of the male parent had no effect on progeny egg reproduction. Also, the number of eggs that hatched by all female partners of a male was inversely proportional to copulation duration for the female laying the eggs for total female reproductive success; and the number of eggs laid by all female partners of a male was proportional to their number of matings for total male reproductive success. However, the total number of eggs that hatched did not significantly differ for eggs laid by a female given new virgin males daily for mating (17.75 ± 4.28) versus eggs laid by virgin females (19.17 ± 7.51) presented daily with a male that re-mated daily with the series of females. Therefore, our results showed that females engaged in mate choice and males engaged in mate competition, affecting egg production, a factor that may be used to enhance mating disruption technology against Cydia molesta.  相似文献

Nymph and adult biology of Glyphepomis spinosa Campos & Grazia (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) was studied on rice plants under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The full life cycle of G. spinosa lasted 50.1?day. Nymph development ranged from 2.7?days for the first instar up to 11.9?days for the fifth instar. The egg stage showed the highest per capita rate of mortality (0.16). Nearly 13% of all eggs were laid on the same day. The sex ratio was 0.5. The average hatching rate was 58.0%. Pre-oviposition, oviposition, and post-oviposition periods took 12.9, 34.4, and 6.2?days, respectively.  相似文献

Predictive models of parasite life cycles increase our understanding of how parasite epidemiology is influenced by global changes and can be used to support decisions for more targeted worm control. Estimates of parasite population dynamics are needed to parameterize such models. The aim of this study was to quantify the main life history traits of Ostertagia ostertagi, economically the most important nematode of cattle in temperate regions. The main parameters determining parasite density during the parasitic phase of O. ostertagi are (i) the larval establishment rate, (ii) hypobiosis rate, (iii) adult mortality and (iv) female fecundity (number of eggs laid per day per female). A systematic review was performed covering studies from 1962 to 2007, in which helminth-naïve calves were artificially infected with O. ostertagi. The database was further extended with results of unpublished trials conducted at the Laboratory for Parasitology of Ghent University, Belgium. Overall inverse variance weighted estimates were computed for each of the traits through random effects models. An average establishment rate (±S.E.) of 0.269 ± 0.022 was calculated based on data of 27 studies (46 experiments). The establishment rate declined when infection dose increased and was lower in younger animals. An average proportion of larvae entering hypobiosis (±S.E.) of 0.041 (±0.009) was calculated based on 27 studies (54 experiments). The proportion of ingested larvae that went into hypobiosis was higher in animals that received concomitant infections with nematode species other than O. ostertagi (mixed infections). An average daily adult mortality (±S.E.) of 0.028 (±0.002) was computed based on data from 28 studies (70 experiments). Adult mortality was positively correlated with infection dose. A daily fecundity (±S.E.) of 284 (±45) eggs per female was found based on nine studies (10 experiments). The average female sex ratio of O. ostertagi based on individual animal data (n = 75) from six different studies was estimated to be 0.55. We believe that this systematic review is the first to summarise the available data on the main life history traits of the parasitic phase of O. ostertagi. In conclusion, this meta-analysis provides novel estimates for the parameterization of life cycle-based transmission models, explicitly reports measures of variance around these estimates, gives evidence for density dependence of larval establishment and adult mortality, shows that host age affects larval establishment and, to our knowledge, provides the first evidence for O. ostertagi of a female-biased sex ratio.  相似文献

The tobacco armyworm, Spodoptera litura Fab., a serious pest of many cultivated crops was evaluated as prey for the reduviid predator, Rhynocoris marginatus Fab. The development, sex ratio, fecundity, hatchability and adult longevity of R. marginatus were investigated in the laboratory. Moreover, a life table was constructed for this predator. Observations clearly indicated that total developmental period of this predator was 46.71±1.58 days. In sex ratio, no significant difference was observed between male and female predators. The pre-oviposition period lasted for 18.64±0.76 days and it was 6.31 times shorter than the oviposition period. Female predators lived longer (128.04±8.48 days) than males (82.84±11.09 days). The total number of eggs laid per female predator in its life span was 405.28±22.15 eggs and the incubation period lasted for 6.81±0.10 days. Life-table studies showed that the intrinsic rate of increase was 0.063 female/day. The population multiplied 292.28 times in the cohort generation time of 103.933 days.  相似文献

The reproductive tract of the parasitoidMicroctonus hyperodae was found to comprise 6.1±0.2 ovarioles containing a total of 40–60 oöcytes. After oviposition into its hostListronotus bonariensis, the parasitoid's egg volume increased by 205 times prior to hatching. At 19.1°C ovipositingM. hyperodae survived for a mean 21±4 days and laid a mean of 48±8 eggs.M. hyperodae collected from Colonia, Uruguay laid a mean of 62±15 eggs which was significantly more than the other ecotypes. Under caging conditions with an ample supply of hosts,M. hyperodae laid 51% of its eggs in the first 72 hours and on average 41% of the species' life-span occurred after the exhaustion of its egg supply. Minimum temperature forM. hyperodae oviposition was found to be c. 5°C; beyond this the rate of increase in egg-laying was approximately linear until 30°C whereafter the rate fell abruptly. There was effectively no egg-laying at 39°C. The parasitoid showed no preference for one host sex or the other either in the laboratory or under field conditions. Compared to otherMicroctonus spp.,M. hyperodae appeared to show low fecundity and high longevity. The adaptive implications of this are discussed.  相似文献

The life cycle of Tetranychus macfarlanei Baker and Pritchard was studied on two different medicinal plants, Clitoria ternatea L. and Justicia adhatoda L. Nees, in BOD at 32.5 °C and 75 % RH during April 2007 to May 2007. Observations towards duration of different stages like egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, adult, total life cycle, preoviposition, oviposition, postoviposition periods, longevity of female and male, and fecundity, sex ratio were recorded. Total developmental period of T. macfarlanei from egg to adult was 6.4 ± 0.37 (Mean ± SE) and 10.6 ± 0.56 days on C. ternatea and J. adhatoda, respectively. On C. ternatea, the fecundity in case of fertilized and unfertilized female were 91.6 ± 11.61 and 80 ± 21.64 eggs, respectively and longevity of fertilized and unfertilized female was 16.4 ± 1.44 and 8.6 ± 2.32 days, respectively. The corresponding figure on J. adhatoda for fecundity in case of fertilized and unfertilized female were 39 ± 2.85 and 19.8 ± 3.90 eggs, respectively and for longevity was 16 ± 0.37 and 11 ± 086 days, respectively. Among the two hosts, C. ternatea appears to be more preferred to J. adhatoda because life cycle was completed in shorter time and fecundity and female longevity were for longer duration.  相似文献

Summary Pteromalus puparum is a gregarious parasitoid of many butterfly pupae. Adult size, mortality, and sex ratio of P. puparum, as a parasitoid of Papilio xuthus, were unit weight of the host. Effects of female size on fecundity, wing load, and longevity were also examined. The highest total weight of progeny from the host was attained when the number of eggs per gram of the host was approximately 150. Positive correlations were observed between the size of the females and their fecundity and wing load. The maximum longevity of the female kept with honey but without hosts was attained when the initial number of parasitoids per g of the host was 150.Considering the total fecundity of all female progeny, the reproductively most efficient number of eggs to be deposited per g of the host was estimated to be approximately 300. However, as shortage of food for the adult females strongly affects their fecundity, the reproductively most efficient number of eggs to be deposited per g of the host was about 70 when the adult female progeny was not provided with food. The optimal number of eggs to be deposited when the emale oviposits in the host under field conditions is discussed.  相似文献

The life history of polysphinctine parasitoids is poorly understood. As a result, their effect on their host has not been evaluated. Here, we present the phenology of Zatypota percontatoria, an ectoparasitoid wasp of theridiid spiders, using rich field, semi‐field and laboratory investigations of selected life‐history parameters. The wasps overwintered as larva attached to the spider abdomen and the imagos of the first generation emerged at the beginning of May. The sex ratio (F/M) of overwintered wasp larvae was 1.4. The wasp spent an average of 6.4 days in the egg stage, 27.67 days in the larval stage and 9.6 days in the pupal stage. Adult longevity was on average 14.34 days. Oviposition occurred on average 8.44 days following maturity. The wasp laid on average 0.35 eggs/day. The total fecundity was on average 7.4 eggs per wasp and decreased with age (data from unmated females). The developmental rate increased with experimental temperature up to 28 °C. The lower developmental threshold for pupae was estimated at 6.6 °C. The sum of effective temperatures for pupae was estimated at 157.8 degree days. Using daily temperature records from the Czech Republic over the last 41 years, we estimated an average of 3.5 generations of Z. percontatoria per year. Mortality was 48% in semi‐field conditions and 23% in the laboratory. The incidence of mortality was highest during egg and larval stages caused by the detachment of eggs or larvae during spider molting, the mortality of the spider‐host and egg deposition on the spider prosoma.  相似文献

The outbreak of Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata (F.) was noticed on a medicinal plant, Withania somnifera Dunal during 2004-05. The population level of the pest was reached its peak in August. The parasitoid Pediobius foveolatus caused 51.94%±12.20% parasitism. The pest completed its life cycle in 20.15±1.50 days on W. somnifera. The longevity of the male and female adults of the pest was 22.07±3.71 and 31.07±4.38 days, respectively. The gravid females of H. vigintioctopunctata laid an average of 287.64±33.38 eggs during their oviposition period of 10.40±2.80 days.  相似文献

The cabbage stem flea beetle, Psylliodes chrysocephala (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a major pest of winter oilseed rape. Despite the importance of this pest, detailed information on reproduction to predict risk of crop damage is lacking. This study investigates the effect of temperature on parameters of reproduction, egg development and viability at five constant temperatures. Significant temperature effects were found on the pre‐oviposition period, total number of eggs laid, daily oviposition rate, female longevity, egg‐development rate and viability. The mean length of the pre‐oviposition period ranged from 93.1 days at 4°C to 14.6 days at 20°C. Analysis of total number of eggs laid and daily oviposition rate during female lifespan estimated the highest total number of eggs laid (696 eggs/female) at 16°C and the highest oviposition rate (6.8 eggs/female and day) at 20°C. The daily oviposition rate at 20°C was not significantly higher than 5.4 eggs/female and day at 16°C. Female longevity was significantly longer at 4°C, shorter at 20°C and not significantly different between 8, 12 and 16°C. Estimated 50% survival time of females was 239, 153, 195, 186 and 78 days at 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20°C, respectively. A linear model of egg development at 8–20°C estimated the lower developmental threshold to be 5.1°C and the thermal constant for development 184.9 degree‐days. The percentage of eggs hatching was significantly lower at 4°C than at all other temperatures tested. The estimated mean hatching percentages were 47.3%, 70.0%, 72.4%, 66.2% and 67.9% at 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20°C, respectively. These results can be used to predict the start and intensity of egg‐laying in the autumn and the appearance of larvae in the field from knowledge about time of field invasion and from monitoring the weather.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the rate of development ofAnastatus biproruli (Girault) was determined by rearing individuals on eggs ofBiprorulus bibax Breddin under a range of constant temperatures (17.5–40.0°C). Rate of development changed in a linear fashion from 17.5–35.0°C and the lower developmental threshold was estimated to be 12.8°C. An estimated 331.8 degree days were required for development. Survival of developing parasitoids was optimal (72–90%) between 25–35°C. Longevity of virgin adults ranged from 12–26 days at 22.5–35°C but was only 3.6 days at 37.5°C. Mated females produced a mean of 54.6 progeny during an average lifespan of 36.4 days at 30°C. Progeny were produced only during the first 21 days of adulthood but post-reproductive females still attacked and killed hosts. FemaleA. biproruli overwintered successfully, and were able to parasitise host eggs if direct sunlight was available.A. biproruli also overwintered as immature stages in host eggs. The biology ofA. biproruli is discussed with regard to its importance as a natural enemy ofB. bibax.

Life cycle and predation potential of a predatory black crickets, Methioche vittaticollis (Stal), were studied in the laboratory at the conditions of 27±1°C and 70±5% RH with a photoperiod of 14: 10 (L: D). Average life cycle was 90 days. The cylindrical eggs were laid singly within the leaf sheath and hatched in 17 days. Total nymphal period lasted 33 days. There were four nymphal stadia that lasted for 7.2, 7.7, 8.7, and 9.0 days, respectively. Adult male and female lived an average of 35 and 43 days, respectively. The female lay an average of 45 eggs during her life span. The number of striped stemborer (SSB) eggs consumed per day by 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar nymphs of M. vittaticollis was 1.7, 2.5, 13.3 and 184.3, respectively. Also, The number of SSB eggs consumed per day by male and female adults were 102.7 and 158.7, respectively. The fourth instar nymph consumed the most number of preys. The functional response curve of 4th instar nymph, male and female adults of M. vittaticollis to the densities of SSB eggs indicated Holling's TYPE II. The consumption of prey by the M. vittaticollis increased with the prey density but the consumption rate decreased. The attack rate of 4th instar of M. vittaticollis was the highest compared to the adults, and handling time was the shortest. Population densities of hoppers and lepidoptera in unsprayed field consisted of rice variety “PSBRc 20” were very low throughout the cropping period. This could be due to the high density of M. vittaticollis. M. vittaticollis was collected from the field and bunds, its population inside the field increased as crop matures. Bunds served as refuge for predators when the crop is maturity stage.  相似文献

The ability of the gregarious larval endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata L. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to adjust progeny sex ratio and clutch size was investigated. The sex ratios (proportion of males) of field clusters were diverse, but many (70%) were female-biased. Nearly 10% yielded males only, suggesting a low percentage of unmated females in the field. In over half of the clusters containing females, the sex ratio was below 0.3. Superparasitism was common in the field, and females were believed to increase progeny sex ratio when attacking previously-parasitized hosts. However, in a single oviposition bout, sex allocation was not precisely controlled both in the field and laboratory. In the laboratory, the number of eggs laid in a day tended to decrease with increasing female age. For females which were offered two hosts per day and for those offered three hosts per day, this value became nearly the same several days after the start of oviposition. The total number of hosts which a female could parasitize during her lifetime was often less than 40. Some of the old females which attacked more than 40 hosts produced male-biased clutches; this was due to sperm depletion, because sperm remained viable throughout a female's lifetime. The amount of sperm used in a single oviposition bout seemed fixed and was not dependent on the number of eggs laid. Females with much oviposition experience did not produce new eggs to compensate for deposited eggs, and the efficiency of egg use (deposited eggs/total eggs) was more than 80%.  相似文献

Greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, is a serious pest of glasshouse crops. It shows resistance to different insecticides and growers are interested in finding other useful control methods. This research was carried out to study the predation potential and biology of Clitostethus arcuatus (Rossi) as one of the most important predators of this pest. Adult C. arcuatus were reared on tobacco leaves bearing colonies of greenhouse whitefly eggs under controlled conditions (25±2°C, 65±5% RH and 16 h L:8 h D). Results showed that the average developmental time of the egg, first through fourth instar larva and pupa were 2.82±0.12, 4.47±0.14, 4.54±0.1, 6.3±0.2, 7±0.22 and 3.8±0.13 days, respectively; and longevity of female and male were 66.4±2.6 and 54.9±2.5 days, respectively. The average feeding rates of female, male and larvae (first through fourth) were 61.4±0.7, 27.6±0.9 eggs/day and 12±1.03, 30.3±2.4, 41.3±2, 68.04±2 eggs/day, respectively. The larvae consumed an average of 992.2±36 eggs during the total larval developmental period with a daily mean of 45.8±0.5. A significant difference was shown between the feeding rate of fourth instar larval stages and between sexes. Females, males and one pair of C. arcuatus (♀,♂) consumed an average of 17.2±0.4, 10.6±0.8, 23.1±0.5 nymph/day; 28.5±0.9, 20.3±0.6, 47.2±0.6 pupa/day and 8±0.3, 6.5±0.54, 13.6±0.4 adult/day, respectively. The feeding rate was significantly different among whitefly life stages. Females laid an average of 3±0.23 eggs/day.  相似文献

Dibrachys boarmiae was recently found as a parasitoid of the pistachio twig borer moth, Kermania pistaciella, an important pistachio pest in Iran. Several biological and behavioural aspects of the wasp were studied under controlled conditions using three different lepidopterous host species, K. pistaciella, Sitotroga cerealella and Galleria mellonella. Development time from egg to adult decreases from 54 days at 15°C to 12.6 days at 32.5°C. The thermal constant was estimated 270°D, and the lower development threshold was at 9.9°C. Longevity of females that had the opportunity to oviposit and access to food (honey) was on average 23 days, and 134 offspring were produced during 13 days of oviposition. Ninety percent of ovipositions occur during the first 10 days of the parasitoid's life, although no pre-oviposition period was found. If females were deprived of food, longevity as well as fecundity, were drastically reduced to 8 days and only 79 offspring respectively. Females were able to mate immediately after emergence and the sex ratio of the progeny was strongly female biased on all examined hosts, especially on the largest host G. mellonella (0.08 male). When females were kept with a male throughout their life, the total number of progeny decreased to 92 wasps on average but the sex ratio was unaffected. The parasitoid significantly preferred to attack the pre-pupal stage, and this influenced the size of clutches allocated to different host stages. The parasitoid laid larger clutches on bigger hosts.  相似文献
