Limitations of Radiology in the Differentiation of Diverticulitis and Diverticulosis of the Colon

While barium enema is the most useful investigation in the primary diagnosis of diverticular disease of the colon, this paper presents further evidence that the terms “diverticulosis” and “diverticulitis” are unsatisfactory and shows that a radiological classification on the traditional criteria is not accurate in determining whether or not inflammation is associated with colonic diverticula.     

Diverticulitis with Sigmoidovesical Fistulae

In four cases of sigmoidovesical fistula secondary to sigmoid diverticulitis, the diagnosis was made by the findings of pneumaturia and fecaluria. The fistula was visualized in the bladder in two cases. A one-stage operative procedure was used for treating the condition. The patients recovered promptly with no morbidity.
