The relative importance of genetic, environmental, and maternal effects as determinants of geographical variation in vertebrate life-histories has not often been explored. We examined the role of genetic and maternal effects as determinants of population divergence in survival and three important larval life-history traits (growth rate, age, and size at metamorphosis) using reciprocal crosses between two latitudinally separated populations of the common frog ( Rana temporaria Linnaeus). Genetic effects were important in all three traits as indicated by the significant effect of male origin, but there was also evidence for nonadditive genetic contributions on metamorphic size and growth rate. Likewise, maternal effect contributions to population divergence were large, partially environment dependent, and apparently acting primarily through egg size in two of three traits. These results suggest that both genetic and maternal effects are important determinants of geographical variation in amphibian life-histories, and that much of the differentiation resulting from maternal effects is mediated through variation in egg size. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 76 , 61–70.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism is usually interpreted in terms of reproductive adaptations, but the degree of sex divergence also may be affected by sex-based niche partitioning. In gape-limited animals like snakes, the degree of sexual dimorphism in body size (SSD) or relative head size can determine the size spectrum of ingestible prey for each sex. Our studies of one mainland and four insular Western Australian populations of carpet pythons ( Morelia spilota ) reveal remarkable geographical variation in SSD, associated with differences in prey resources available to the snakes. In all five populations, females grew larger than males and had larger heads relative to body length. However, the populations differed in mean body sizes and relative head sizes, as well as in the degree of sexual dimorphism in these traits. Adult males and females also diverged strongly in dietary composition: males consumed small prey (lizards, mice and small birds), while females took larger mammals such as possums and wallabies. Geographic differences in the availability of large mammalian prey were linked to differences in mean adult body sizes of females (the larger sex) and thus contributed to sex-based resource partitioning. For example, in one population adult male snakes ate mice and adult females ate wallabies; in another, birds and lizards were important prey types for both sexes. Comparative analyses of the genetic differentiation in microsatellite markers ( F ST) and leaf morphology characters ( Q ST) of Amphicarpaea edgeworthii Benth. were conducted to gain insight into the roles of random processes and natural selection in the population divergence. Simple sequence repeat analyses on 498 individuals of 19 natural populations demonstrate that a significant genetic differentiation occurs among populations (mean F ST = 0.578), and A. edgeworthii is a highly self-fertilized species (mean selfing rate s  = 0.989). The distribution pattern of genetic diversity in this species shows that central populations possess high genetic diversity (e.g. population WL with H E = 0.673 and population JG with H E = 0.663), whereas peripheral ones have a low H E as in population JD (0.011). The morphological divergence of leaf shape was estimated by the elliptical Fourier analysis on the data from 11 natural and four common garden populations. Leaf morphology analyses indicate the morphological divergence does not show strong correlation with the genetic differentiation ( R  = 0.260, P  = 0.069). By comparing the 95% confidence interval of Q ST with that of F ST, Q ST values for five out of 12 quantitative traits are significantly higher than the average F ST value over eight microsatellite loci. Several morphotypes that so far have been attributed to the allegedly cosmopolitan ascidian Cystodytes dellechiajei occur in the Mediterranean Sea. Colour variation is the difference most frequently reported. In this study, we addressed the genetic structure of this ascidian in relation to geographical location and colour morph. Partial sequences of the gene cytochrome  c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) were obtained from seven populations of the western Mediterranean, encompassing eight colour varieties. All population genetic analyses (exact test, pairwise F ST, hierarchical analysis of molecular variance, multidimensional scaling, nested clade analysis) indicated clearly that differences between colour morphs are large enough to obscure any geographical differentiation when colours are combined within localities. When variance due to colour divergence was removed, however, a significant geographical variability between localities remained. The genetic divergence between the colour morphs analysed was significant in comparisons of the brown and purple forms with the others, but not among the green, blue, and white morphs. Phylogeographic analyses suggest that population fragmentation and range expansions have shaped the present-day distribution of the haplotypes. Patterns of intraspecific geographic variation in morphology and behaviour, when examined in a phylogenetic context, can provide insight into the microevolutionary processes driving population divergence and ultimately speciation. In the present study, we quantified behavioural and phenotypic variation among populations from genetically divergent regions in the Central American treefrog, Dendropsophus ebraccatus . Our fine-scale population comparisons demonstrated regional divergence in body size, colour pattern frequencies, and male advertisement call. None of the characters covaried with phylogenetic history or geographic proximity among sampled populations, indicating the importance of highly localized selection pressures and genetic drift in shaping character divergence among isolated regions. Leaf variation was examined in two hybridizing Mexican red oaks, Quercus affinis and Q. laurina . Data of nine traits were obtained for ten randomly chosen leaves in each of 512 individuals from 16 populations sampled along a geographical gradient, including the distribution area of both species and a putative area of secondary contact and hybridization. A cluster analysis recognized two main groups of populations, which were congruent with the taxonomic assignment of the predominant morphological type within the populations and were thus labelled ' Q. affinis -like' and ' Q. laurina -like' population groups. A nested analysis of variance revealed that the largest proportion of the total variation was contained within populations, as among-tree variation (28–54%, depending on the trait), and as intra-individual variation (17–56%). However, differences between the two groups of populations (3–27%) and among populations within groups (5–21%) were also significant for the nine traits. A distinct pattern of change across populations was observed for each trait. Variation was particularly pronounced along the geographical gradient for petiole length and leaf-margin teeth number, possibly implying selection on these two traits. Genetic diversity of Iris aphylla was examined in seven Polish populations located at the northern limit of the geographical range of the species. Using RAPD analysis, 491 DNA fragments were amplified, all of which were polymorphic. The peripheral populations were characterized by a low number of unique bands (one to three per population) and moderate values of genetic diversity parameters (percent of polymorphic loci = 30.6%, Shannon's index = 0.149 and Nei's gene diversity = 0.097, on average), which can be explained as being due to the recent expansion of the European biota and the extremely low frequency or absence of seed set and of juveniles, as well as limited pollen and seed dispersal. There was also no significant correlation between ecological properties (population size; number of flowering ramets and fruits) and genetic diversity parameters. Despite this fact, more fixed loci were noted in the smallest populations than were in the largest ones. All populations were significantly differentiated and geographically structured. Analysis of molecular variance between regions showed a low and nonsignificant value, but relatively high molecular variation was partitioned among and within populations. Morphometric variation in the Robertsonian polymorphism zone of Barcelona of Mus musculus domesticus was studied by geometric morphometrics. This system is characterized by populations of reduced diploid number (2 n  = 27–39) surrounded by standard populations (2 n  = 40). We investigated the morphological variation in mice from this area, as well as the effect of geographical distance and karyotype on this variation. We also investigated the degree of co-variation between the two functional units of the mandible to explore the origin of this system (primary intergradation or secondary contact). The size and shape of the cranium, mandible and scapula were analysed for 226 specimens grouped by population, chromosome number and structural heterozygosity. Size was estimated as the centroid size, and shape was estimated after Procrustes superimposition. No significant differences in size between populations or chromosomal groups were detected. Diploid number, structural heterozygosity and local geographical isolation contributed to the differentiation in shape. Morphological differentiation between standard mice and Robertsonian specimens was observed, suggesting genetic isolation between these groups. Co-variation between the ascending ramus and alveolar region of the mandible was quantified by the trace correlation between landmark subsets of these modules. A total of nine enzymes coded by 14 loci were assayed for each of six populations (from the north-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean) of two sea bream subspecies ( Diplodus sargus sargus and Diplodus sargus cadenati ). Diagnostic alleles were observed for each subspecies, although there were several common alleles. Estimates of variance in allele frequencies among samples ( F ST) revealed significant differences ( P  < 0.05) among both subspecies. Genetic divergence was found between Atlantic and Mediterranean samples: values for genetic distances were higher than 0.163. Furthermore, D. sargus cadenati populations displayed a higher mean weight and length than D. sargus sargus populations and significant differences in growth were found among subspecies and populations. We investigated the evolution of a large facial bone, the opercle (OP), in lake populations of the threespine stickleback that were founded by anadromous ancestors, in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Recent studies characterized OP variation among marine and lake populations and mapped a quantitative trait locus with a large influence on OP shape. Using populations from diverse environments and independent evolutionary histories, we examined divergence of OP shape from that of the anadromous ancestor. We report preliminary evidence for divergence between benthic and generalist lake ecotypes, necessitating further investigation. Furthermore, rapid divergence of OP shape has occurred in a lake population that was founded by anadromous stickleback in the 1980s, which is consistent with divergence of other phenotypic traits and with OP diversification in other lake populations. By contrast, there has been limited evolution of OP shape in a second lake population that may have experienced a genetic bottleneck early in its history and lacks genetic variation for OP divergence. Nicotiana glauca , a hummingbird pollinated plant, exhibits geographical variation in several floral traits. We examined whether geographical differentiation occurred for different flower characters and if this differentiation could be explained, at least in part, by the existence or abundance of different hummingbird species in the respective pollinator assemblages. The comparison between five populations showed significant variation in six floral traits and two female fitness measures. The traits that better discriminated between populations were corolla length and corolla width. There were metric correlations between corolla length and style length in all populations studied and, in four of the five populations, both corolla length and width were also correlated. Among plants in each population, seed weight was correlated positively and significantly with style exertion, suggesting that fruit quality is dependent on the degree of cross pollination. Assemblages of hummingbirds differed between populations in species composition, visitation frequencies, and bill length. Linear regression involving bill length of the more frequent hummingbird pollinators and corolla length yielded positive and significant relationships. Sexual selection theory predicts that genital structures in isolated populations are likely to diverge, but male genitalia are often species-specific, which led to the idea that male genitalia are relatively invariable within species. Previous allometric studies collectively suggested that male genitalia are intraspecifically invariable in size compared with external body parts. We investigated whether male genitalia are invariable in shape in three populations of a grasshopper Schistocerca lineata Scudder, 1899, using two independent methods of geometric morphometric analyses. Specifically, we focused on the idea that male genitalia are complex structures consisting of many functionally different components, and studied how these individual parts diverge among three populations. Individual components of male genitalia show different population-level divergence, resulting in the mosaic pattern of genital divergence. Individual components diverge independently from each other. Body size is positively correlated with genitalia size, but is significantly correlated with the shape of only one of the three genital structures we measured. Thus, different components of male genitalia may be influenced by different evolutionary processes. It is generally accepted that genitalia are among the fastest evolving characters in insects and that selection on these structures may increase speciation rates in groups with polygamous mating systems. If selection is causing genitalic divergence between or among populations of a species, one prediction is that geographical structure of genitalic morphology would be in place before genetic structure of a rapidly evolving neutral marker. The current study tests this hypothesis in the geographically widespread scarab beetle Phyllophaga hirticula by evaluating whether standing variation in male and female genitalia is more or less geographically structured than a mitochondrial genetic marker. Geographical structure of mitochondrial (mt)DNA and male and female genitalic shape were analysed using analysis of variance, multivariate analysis of variance, Mantel tests, and tests of spatial autocorrelation. The results show that, although female genitalia are more geographically structured than mtDNA, male genitalia are not. All extant populations of Hebe speciosa (Plantaginaceae), a threatened endemic New Zealand shrub, were investigated using the amplified fragment length polymorphism technique (AFLP). Genetic diversity indices varied significantly among geographical regions and were positively correlated with population size. Among-population genetic differentiation was high (mean pairwise ΦST = 0.47), implying complex historical relationships between disjunct populations and negligible contemporary gene flow. Southern populations exhibited extremely low genetic diversity relative to those found in Northland, suggesting that these populations may be more recent in origin. Patterns of genetic relationship among some populations indicate pre-European Māori dispersal and cultivation. The three northernmost populations were found to contain the majority of the species' remaining genetic diversity and thus, should be a focus for future conservation management. The snails Theodoxus danubialis and Theodoxus prevostianus form a single clade native to freshwaters of south-eastern Europe whose inter- and intraspecific relationships remain unresolved. The present study utilized a phylogeographical approach to clarify the relationship of these species as well as to reconstruct the evolutionary and demographic history of populations in the western portion of their range. Phylogenetic, population genetic, and nested clade analyses reveal a clade that has distributed itself upriver from a lower Danube River source population and become genetically distinct primarily through range expansion and localized allopatric divergence. Notably, this geographical pattern is replicated phylogenetically in the form of two cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO I) lineages that are present simultaneously in individual snails. Haplotypes from polymorphic individuals form two distinct clades, both of which show phylogenetic and nucleotide substitution patterns consistent with a mitochondrial origin, and whose common ancestor must have occurred in a lower Danube source population. Separated allopatrically from their Danubian relatives, populations of T. danubialis in northern Italy have also undergone substantial range expansion, much more recently than Danube watershed lineages. Red deer Cervus elaphus of the endangered populations from Sardinia and Mesola Wood, northern Italy, were analysed for genetic variation at 531 bp of the mitochondrial control region and 12 polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci. A phylogenetic analysis was conducted including additional data from the literature to gain insight into the phylogeographical origin of the Sardinian subspecies C. e. corsicanus . Microsatellite variation was low in both populations but Sardinia showed comparatively high variability at the control region. Management recommendations are discussed. In particular, the Mesola red deer, the only remaining indigenous Italian population, ought to be managed to increase the effective population size and should be subdivided into two or more populations. As to the phylogeography of the Sardinian population, microsatellite data favoured mainland Italy as the place of origin in that Sardinia and Mesola showed the smallest distance values and were paired together in trees with high bootstrap support. However, the mitochondrial data only partially confirmed this conclusion but showed great similarity between Sardinian and Spanish red deer. Allozyme electrophoresis was used to examine population genetic structure at inter- and intraspecific levels for the New Zealand endemic corophiid amphipods, Paracorophium lucasi and P. excavatum. Individuals were collected from estuarine and freshwater habitats from North, South and Chatham Islands. Analyses of genetic structure among interspecific populations indicated clear allelic differentiation between the two Paracorophium species (Nei's genetic distance, D  = 1.62), as well as considerable intraspecific substructuring ( D  = 0.15–0.65). These levels of divergence are similar to interspecific levels for other amphipods and it is proposed that at least two groups from the P. lucasi complex and three from the P. excavatum complex correspond to sibling species. In most cases allopatry can account for the differentiation among the putative sibling species. For populations that share a common coastline we found low levels of differentiation and little or no correlation with geographical distance, suggesting that gene flow is adequate to maintain homogeneous population genetic structure. By contrast, populations on separate coastlines (i.e. isolated by land) showed moderate levels of geographical differentiation indicating restricted gene flow. The assessment of developmental stability in hybrids can provide valuable information in the study of species formation because it allows an evaluation of the degree of incompatibility of genetic systems that control developmental processes. The present study assessed the impact of two hybridization events, assumed to have occurred at different times, on developmental instability in the ground beetle Carabus solieri . Developmental instability was estimated in 678 individuals from 27 populations from the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) levels of four morphological traits: the tibia length of middle and hind legs, which are functional structures, and the length and the proximal width of the hind wings, which are vestigial and thus nonfunctional structures. Significant variations of FA levels between populations were shown only for the wing width. For this trait, FA levels in hybrids were higher than in their parental entities for both hybridization events, indicating a significant divergence of the gene systems controlling development between the parental entities in the two hybridization cases. As expected, wing traits exhibited FA levels at least three times higher than leg trait. The littorine genus Bembicium , restricted to Australia and Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands, provides special opportunities to examine the effects of contrasting modes of development on genetic divergence over large spatial and temporal scales. Two species, Bembicium auratum and Bembicium nanum , have planktotrophic larvae, and large, overlapping geographical distributions, whereas the three direct developers, Bembicium vittatum , Bembicium melanostoma , and Bembicium flavescens , are geographical replacements. Phylogenetic analysis of genetic distances at 28 allozyme loci supported the current taxonomic treatment of the genus and monophyly of the direct developers. Both individually and as a clade, the direct developers showed substantially greater divergence than the species with planktotrophic larvae. Controlling for geographical distance and for particular sections of coastline, genetic subdivision within the direct developers was shown to be much higher than in the planktotrophs. Low levels of subdivision in B. auratum and B. nanum over distances of 4000–6800 km indicate maintenance of substantial genetic connectivity, independent of habitat and biogeographical history. By contrast, the direct developers show clear genetic impacts of their geographical histories. Despite extreme genetic subdivision within species, the direct developers B. vittatum and B. melanostoma have geographically coherent and complementary distributions, associated with biogeographical provinces. We investigated allozyme variation in 34 populations of the perennial herb Silene nutans from Sweden and northern Finland, areas that were ice-covered during the last (Weichselian) glaciation. The present geographical structure of genetic variation in S. nutans in Sweden and northern Finland appears to have been mainly shaped by ancient historical processes. Patterns of variation in allele frequencies suggest two major postglacial immigration routes into Sweden, with populations entering the area from both the south and the east and forming a contact zone with admixed populations in central Sweden. While estimates of within-population genetic diversity and allelic richness are significantly correlated with present population size and geographical position (latitude), population size is not correlated with latitude. Low genetic diversity in the northern populations is more likely to have resulted from ancient stochastic events during the process of immigration than from recent population fragmentation. F IS values are high and increase with latitude. Evidence of recent bottlenecks was detected in several southern Swedish populations: these can be interpreted in terms of population fragmentation as a result of anthropogenic disturbance.
