Summary The yield responses to nitrogen uptake are described for water-sown IR8 rice grown in the wet season in northern Australia. Various patterns of nitrogen uptake were achieved by different times and amounts of nitrogen application in the range 0 to 300 kg per ha. Grain yields increased with nitrogen uptake at flowering stage up to approximately 120 kg per ha but decreased when uptake exceeded this level. The grain yield increase was associated mainly with increased panicle production, while grain yield decrease was associated with a reduction in the weight of ripened grain per panicle. Nitrogen concentration in grain over all experiments increased linearly with nitrogen uptake at flowering, but grain yield was reduced when grain nitrogen exceeded approximately 1.5 per cent. High nitrogen uptake at flowering was presumed to lead to depletion of carbohydrate reserves during the critical grain-ripening phase.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of different herbicides for controlling weeds in wheat (variety Fakhr-i-Sarhad),at higher attitude, an experiment was conducted at Agriculture Research Station, Chitral during Rabi season 2003-04, using Randomized Complete Block Design, keeping four replications. The experiment, sown in November comprised of eight treatments, viz; seven herbicides and a weedy check. Each treatment consisted of 5 rows each 30 cm apart and 5 m long thus giving a total size of 5 m x 1.5 m. The herbicides used included; terbutryn + triasulfuron at 0.16 kg, 2,4-D at 0.7 kg, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl at 0.93 kg, clodinafop at 0.05 kg, bromoxynil + MCPA at 0.49 kg, carfentrazon-ethyl at 0.02 kg and isoproturon at 1.0 kg a.i ha(-1). The data were recorded on weed kill efficiency (%), fresh weed biomass (kg ha(-1)), plant height (cm), spike length (cm), number of tillers m(-2), number of grains spike(-1), thousand grains weight (g), biological yield (kg ha(-1)), grain yield (kg ha(-1)) and harvest index (%). The data recorded on weed kill efficiency, weed biomass (kg ha1), grains yield (kg ha(-1)) and harvest index (%) were significantly affected by the different herbicidal treatments. Statistically isoproturon treatment exhibited the best performance, with maximum weed kill efficiency (48.26%) and minimum fresh weed biomass (433.3 kg ha(-1)) as compared to weedy check (6 %) and (1102 kg ha(-1)), respectively. Similarly, the spike length (8.34 cm), number of tillers (427 m(-2)), number of grains spike(-1) (38.0), thousand grains weight (39.85 g), biological yield (8475 kg ha(-1)), grain yield (2530 kg ha(-1)) and harvest index (31.3%) were the highest in isoproturon treatments as compared to weedy check having (7.64 cm), (356 m(-2)), (34.1), (37.12 g), (6858 kg), (1913 kg ha(-1)) and (27%), respectively.  相似文献

To study the importance for final grain size in wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) of assimilate supply and the storage capacity of the grain, two field experiments were done. In 1976 nitrogen was applied in the range from none to 180 kg ha-1, part of the crop was thinned, and the top halves of some ears of the short variety Hobbit and of the tall variety Maris Huntsman were removed soon after anthesis. In 1977 ears of Maris Huntsman were halved 5 days after anthesis or at 30 days after anthesis when grain volume was maximum. Thinning the crop from 360 to 180 ear-bearing shoots m-2 30 days before anthesis increased the number of grains per ear, except in the absence of nitrogen fertiliser, but did not increase grain size, grain dry weight per ear or total dry weight per culm. Removing the upper half of ears of Hobbit 5 days after anthesis increased dry weight per grain, but when this treatment was applied to Maris Huntsman either 5 days after anthesis in 1976 and 1977, or when grain volume was maximal in 1977, the grains failed to increase in dry weight. Non-grain dry weight of both varieties was increased by halving the ear. In both varieties the maximum volume of grains in halved ears was larger than in intact ears. Grain dry weight increased relatively less than volume after halving the ear of Hobbit, and the decrease in volume up to maturity was greater in halved than intact ears of both varieties. The larger grain volume in halved ears of Maris Huntsman in 1977 was associated with more endosperm cells.  相似文献

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL., ‘Chablis’) wasgrown under field conditions from sowing until harvest maturity, except for a 12-d period [70–82 days after sowing (DAS)coinciding with anthesis] during which replicated crop areaswere exposed to a range of temperatures within two pairs ofpolyethylene-covered temperature gradient tunnels. At 82 DAS,an increase in mean temperature from 16 to 25 °C duringthis treatment period had no effect on above-ground biomass, but increased ear dry weight from 223 to 327 g m-2and, at 83DAS, reduced root biomass from 141 to 63 g m-2. Mean temperatureover the treatment period had no effect on either above-groundbiomass or grain yield at maturity. However, the number of grainsper ear at maturity declined with increasing maximum temperaturerecorded over the mid-anthesis period (76–79 DAS) and, more significantly, with maximum temperature 1 d after 50% anthesis(78 DAS). Grain yield and harvest index also declined sharplywith maximum temperature at 78 DAS. Grain yield declined by350 g m-2at harvest maturity with a 10 °C increase in maximumtemperature at 78 DAS and was related to a 40% reduction inthe number of grains per ear. Grain yield was also negativelyrelated to thermal time accumulated above a base temperatureof 31 °C (over 8 d of the treatment from 5 d before to 2d after 50% anthesis). Thus, grain fertilization and grain setwas most sensitive to the maximum temperature at mid-anthesis.These results confirm that wheat yields would be reduced considerablyif, as modellers suggest, high temperature extremes become morefrequent as a result of increased variability in temperatureassociated with climate change.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Triticum aestivum, spring wheat, temperature, grain number, grain yield, root growth.  相似文献

Summary Nitrogen limitations to the yield of a field crop ofVicia faba have been examined. Application of nitrogen totalling 560 kg/ha increased dry matter yield at flowering by 674 kg/ha (32%) and grain yield at final harvest by 1.6 tonnes/ha (24%). Attempts to reduce nitrogen limitations by replacing the native rhizobia with strains ofRhizobium leguminosarum selected for high rates of nitrogen fixation were unsuccessful but the introduction of poor rhizobia reduced grain yield. The reasons for this and the implications of the results for crop improvement are discussed.  相似文献

Summary A 2-year field study was undertaken on a sandy loam in a tropical monsoon region to determine the growth and yield response of maize (Zea mays L.) to 10–11 day intermittent submergence at two growth stagesviz., 20 (stage 1) and 40 (stage 2) days after planting, in combination with two rates of rice straw mulch (0 and 6 t/ha) and three levels (0, 30 and 60 kg/ha) of soil-applied supplemental nitrogen. Intermittent submergence at both growth stages caused a severe oxygen stress in the root-zone. Compared with no-flooding, stage-1 flooding without additional N reduced the grain yield by 51 and 69%, stover yield by 16 and 45% and grain: stover ratio by 41 and 47% in the first and second year, respectively. Similar were the submergence effects on N, P, K and Zn concentrations in leaves, ears per plant and grain weight per ear. Relatively more adverse effects of stage-1 flooding in the second than the first year followed from the hotter soil and atmospheric environments in the former season. The stage-2 flooding produced practically no ill effects on growth and yield of the crop. Soil application of 60 kg N/ha after termination of stage-1 flooding recovered the grain yield by 77% in the first year and 65% in the second year. Additional nitrogen also benefited the growth and yield characters. The interactive effects of straw mulching with flooding were not distinct. Three field experiments studying the effect of chlormequat (CCC) on the grain yield of spring wheat and the quality of the grain for baking purposes were made. In the first, CCC applied as a spray during the stage of rapid internode elongation proved more successful than application as a mixture with superphosphate drilled with the seed at sowing. Both methods prevented lodging and the depression of yield which occurred in the control plots. In the other two experiments the sole method of CCC application was by spraying.
In all three experiments CCC-treated plots had more ears per unit area and grains per ear than control plots; the one exception being at the lowest plant density derived from a seeding rate of 24 kg/ha. CCC helped prevent weather damage to the grain and as a result baking performance of the flour from treated plots was superior to that from the untreated plots.  相似文献

Summary Inoculation of water fernAzolla pinnata R. Brown (Bangkok isolate) at the rate of 500kg fresh weight ha−1 in rice fields at weekly intervals after planting in addition to 30 kg N ha−1 as urea showed a decrease in its growth and N2-fixation with delay in application. Use of Azolla up to 3 weeks after planting (WAP) during wet and 4 WAP during dry season produced significantly more grain yield than 30 kg N ha−1, whereas its application upto one WAP produced more grain yield than 60 kg N ha−1. Grain yield with Azolla applied at the time of planting was similar to that of 60 kg N treatment during the wet season. Higher grain yields in zero and one WAP Azolla treatments resulted due to increase in both number of panicles m−2 and number of grains/panicle while the subsequent Azolla inoculations increased grain yield mainly by producing more number of grains/panicle. Dry matter and total N yields at maturity of rice crop were more with Azolla application upto 3 WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season while the reduction in sterility (%) was observed upto one WAP over 30 kg N ha−1 during both seasons. Number of tillers m−2 and dry matter production at maximum tillering and flowering were more than 30 kg N ha−1 with the use of Azolla upto one WAP. Increased grain N yield was observed with the use of Azolla upto 4 WAP during two seasons whereas straw N yield increased upto one WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season.  相似文献

The effect of fertilizer on yield and yield related traits studied in two consecutive years at two different locations. Three different doses of fertilizer (NPK) applied at the rate of 9:23:0, 18:46:12 and 27:69:25 respectively on sixteen chickpea, genotypes (Desi and Kabuli advance lines and commercial varieties). Data recorded for days to 50% flowering, plant height, primary and secondary branches, pods per plant, 100-grain weight and grain yield (kg/ha). In Desi chickpea highest grain yield (kg/ha) in both years was produced by advance line D-12026 and in Kabuli advance line K-70005 at Faisalabad location. Grain yield kg/ha had significant positive correlation with all the considered parameters except days to 50% flowering and days to 50% maturity. The treatment comparison manifested that fertilizer doses 9:23:0 enhanced grain yield. The high dose of fertilizer is not recommendable. The grain yield of Desi and Kabuli chickpea at two locations Pulses Research Institute (PRI) Faisalabad and GBRSS (Gram Breeding Research Sub Station) Kallurkot had significant variation. The grain yield (kg ha−1) was significant high in research area of PRI, Faisalabad in both years. The NPK 9:23:0 found operative dose of fertilizer for chickpea.  相似文献

In experiments with spring and winter wheat at Rothamsted and Woburn during 4 years CCC increased yield at close spacing (4 in) (10 cm) more than at usual spacing (8 in) (20 cm), but there was no interaction between spacing and yield. Some experiments tested up to 2·4 cwt/acre (300 kg/ha) N to see whether yields continued to increase with more than usual amounts of N, when CCC prevented lodging. There was no evidence of this. When a short dry spell occurred at ear emergence, yield of spring wheat was increased by 6 cwt/acre (750 kg/ha) by CCC and 10 cwt (1250 kg) by irrigation. CCC probably improves yield in these conditions because the larger root system it causes enables more ear-bearing shoots to survive. CCC increases yield in two ways, either by increasing ears or grain per ear. In an unlodged crop CCC usually makes the grains smaller, but by preventing lodging it can also increase size. Usually CCC decreases the leaf area per shoot. The flag leaf may be smaller, unchanged or larger than those of untreated plants. There was no obvious connexion between flag-leaf area and grain yield; when CCC decreased flag-leaf area duration by 25 %, grain yield was unchanged. The results suggest that using CCC gives a more than even chance of a profitable yield increase.  相似文献

Grain and total dry weight of maize (Zea mays L.) at final harvest increased by about 50% and 30%, respectively, when the population was increased from 23000 to 48000 plants/ha, but did not increase further with population up to 74000/ha. Between 6 and 10 weeks after sowing, crop growth rate (C) increased by about 40% with increase in leaf-area index (L) from 2 to 5·5, despite a concomitant increase in moisture stress. Immediately after flowering, which occurred at 10–11 weeks, C increased up to the greatest L attained, 6·7, and would probably have reached a maximum, with L about 7, when nearly all the incident light would be intercepted by foliage. Later, the L at which C was maximal decreased, probably because the photosyhthetic efficiency of leaves decreased faster with time as L increased; 18 weeks after sowing, when L varied between 3 and 5·5, C was maximal when L was 5. The proportion of grain in the dry matter accumulated after flowering increased from 73% when population was 23000/ha to 82% when it was 60000–74000/ha. Stem weight increased until 3–4 weeks after flowering, then remained constant when population was 23000/ha, but decreased in denser populations. The fraction of the ear consisting of grain increased with population.  相似文献

The effect of eyespot throughout the season on wheat receiving different amounts of nitrogen was studied in pot experiments. Plants inoculated in December showed chlorosis of outer leaves in February. Among plants with high nitrogen, eyespot killed 11%, caused straggling of 31% and whiteheads in 14% of the surviving ear-bearing straws, reduced yield of straw by 8% and of grain by 16%. The loss in straw yield was due to reduction in plant number, that of grain was about half due to reduction in number of ears and half to production of lighter grains. Among plants with low nitrogen the disease killed 23% of the plants, caused straggling of 86% and whiteheads in 18% of the surviving ear-bearing straws, and reduced yield of straw by 23% and of grain by 44%. The loss in straw yield was due to death of plants, that of grain was about two-thirds due to the production of fewer ears and one-third to that of lighter grains. In the high-nitrogen series the number of shoots at the time of maximum tillering was reduced by 29%; in the low-nitrogen series the disease caused reduction in height, a very uneven crop, delay in ear and anther emergence, and an increase in tail corn from 4% in the controls to 30% in the inoculated plants.
All inoculated plants became infected, but those receiving high nitrogen had only 49% of the ear-bearing straws with severe lesions at harvest, while those receiving low nitrogen had 86%. The larger number of tillers produced when nitrogen was applied may have enabled the less severely diseased shoots to survive and bear ears while the most severely infected died.  相似文献

Grain yield and grain weight of wheat are often decreased by water-limitation in the north-eastern cropping belt of Australia. Based on knowledge that CIMMYT lines are well-adapted in this region, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population between two elite CIMMYT bread wheats (Seri M82 and Babax) was evaluated under water-limited environments. Fourteen productivity traits were evaluated in 192 progeny in up to eight trials. For three aggregations of the environments (all, high yield or low yield), multiple quantitative trait loci (QTL) were detected, each explaining <15% of variation. Co-location of multiple trait QTL was greatest on linkage groups 1B-a, 1D-b, 4A-a, 4D-a, 6A-a, 6B-a, 7A-a and an unassigned linkage group. Two putative QTL (LOD > 3) from Seri (6D-b and UA-d) increased grain yield and co-located with a suggestive (2 < LOD < 3) and a putative QTL for increased stem carbohydrate content (WSC), respectively; the latter QTL also co-located with a putative anthesis QTL for earlier flowering. Both QTL were detected only in high yield (>4t ha−1) environments. A third increased grain yield QTL (7A-a) from Babax co-located with QTL for increased grain number. Six putative QTL increased grain weight and co-located with QTL for harvest index, grains per spike and spike number. Three putative QTL for increased grains per spike co-located with strong QTL for earlier flowering, increased grain weight and fewer spikes. A group of progeny that exceeded the mean grain yield and grain weight of commercial checks had an increased frequency of QTL for high WSC, large grain size, increased harvest index and greater height, but fewer stems, when compared to low yielding (20% less), low grain weight progeny. These findings were consistent with agronomic analyses of the germplasm and demonstrate that there should be opportunities to independently manipulate grain number and grain size which is typically difficult due to strong negative correlations.  相似文献

Phosphorus unavailability and lack of organic matter in calcareous soils under semiarid climates are the major reasons for low crop productivity. A field experiment was conducted at The Agronomy Research Farm of The University of Agriculture Peshawar (semiarid climate), during summer 2015. The objective of the research was to investigate the effect of plant residues, organic and inorganic phosphorus management on improving yield and yield components of hybrid maize (CS-200) with (+) and without (?) phosphate solubilizing bacteria. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with split plot arrangement, using three replications. A combination of plant residues and phosphorus sources were used as mainplot factor, and phosphate solubilizing bacteria were used as a subplot factor. The results revealed that plant residues, phosphorus sources and phosphate solubilizing bacteria significantly affected all parameters under study except number of plants at harvest. Application of legume residues (Faba bean) increased ear length (22.9 cm), grains row?1 (46) and ear?1 (419), 1000 grains weight (365 g), grain yield (6175 kg ha?1) and shelling percentage (83) as compared to paper mulberry and garlic residues. Phosphorus application at the higher rate of 120 kg ha?1 from inorganic source (single super phosphate) was superior in terms of higher ear length (24.4 cm), number of grains row?1 (48) and ear?1 (455), 1000 grains weight (380 g), grain yield (6558 kg ha?1), harvest index (42.7%) and shelling percentage (83%) than the lower rate of phosphorus (60 kg P ha?1). Inoculation of maize seeds with beneficial microbes (phosphate solubilizing bacteria) significantly increased ear length (22.9 cm), number of grains row?1 (45) and ear?1 (413), 1000 grains weight (364 g), grain yield (6237 kg ha?1), harvest index (41.8%) and shelling percentage (82) than without seed inoculation. On the basis of our results from this study, we concluded that application of faba bean residues, 120 kg P ha?1 as single super phosphate along with seed inoculation with phosphate solubilizing bacteria could improve yield and yield components of hybrid maize under semiarid climates.  相似文献

The number of grains in ears of six varieties of winter wheat growing in the field was decreased by removing the top half of the ear 6 days after anthesis (halving). In the semi-dwarf varieties Hustler, Sentry and Hobbit, and in the taller varieties Armada and Flanders, the mean dry weight per grain in the lower six spikelets of halved ears was about 23% greater than the dry weight of grains in the comparable part of intact ears. In Maris Huntsman the increase in grain size amounted to only 13%. Halving increased the number of grains in the semi-dwarf varieties but not in the others. Consequently, the increases caused by halving in the total weight of grain in the lower six spikelets ranged from 41% in Hustler and Hobbit to 7% in Maris Huntsman. Halving increased the amount of nitrogen in the grain of the lower half of the ear similarly in all varieties, and relatively more than it increased dry weight. So nitrogen per cent dry weight of grain was increased, especially in Armada, Flanders and Maris Huntsman which responded least in dry weight. The uptake of nitrogen into the stem plus ear after anthesis was unaffected by halving. Most of the nitrogen that normally moved to the upper grains accumulated in the lower grains of halved ears. More nitrogen moved into the grain of intact ears of tall than of semi-dwarf varieties after anthesis, because there was greater uptake of nitrogen into the shoot from the roots.  相似文献

Soil application of biogas residues (BGRs) is important for closing nutrient cycles. This study examined the efficiency and impact on yields and yield formation of solid-liquid separated residues from biodegradable municipal and industrial wastes (bio-waste) in comparison to complete BGRs, nitrification inhibitor, agricultural BGRs, mineral fertilizer and unfertilized plots as control. The experiment was set up as a randomized block design on silt loam Cambisol. Biogas residues from four biogas plants were evaluated. Plants per m², ears per plant, grains per ear and thousand grain weight (TGW) were measured at harvest. Fertilization with BGRs resulted in similar biomass yields compared with mineral fertilizer. Mineral fertilizer (71 dt/ha) and plots fertilized with liquid fraction (59–62 dt/ha) indicated a trend to higher yields than solid fraction or complete BGR due to its high ammonia content. Liquid fractions and fraction with nitrification inhibitor induced fewer plants per m² than corresponding solid and complete variants due to a potential phytotoxicity of high NH4-N concentration during germination. However, barley on plots fertilized with liquid fraction compensated the disadvantages at the beginning during the vegetation period and induced higher grain yields than solid fraction. This was attributable to a higher number of ears per plant and grains per ear. In conclusion, BGRs from biodegradable municipal and industrial wastes can be used for soil fertilization and replace considerable amounts of mineral fertilizer. Our study showed that direct application of the liquid fraction of BGR is the most suitable strategy to achieve highest grain yields. Nevertheless potential phytotoxicity of the high NH4-N concentration in the liquid fraction should be considered.  相似文献

Summary In a field experiment, more than 22% increase in the grain yield of corn was obtained by the application of 50 kg ZnSO4/ha. Grain yields were also increased by increasing the level of applied phosphorus. Positive relationship was obtained between Zn and P, the phosphorus treatment increased Zn uptake by grains and vice versa.  相似文献

Spring barley cv Ark Royal was grown in pots in the open, andsoil drenches containing 6-benzyl-aminopurine were repeatedlyapplied during the pre-heading phase starting either ‘early’when the main shoot apex had reached the glume primordium stage, during tillering, or ‘later’ at the anther primordiumstage, at the start of stem elongation Although grain yield was unaffected by the ‘late’cytokinin treatments, it was increased by up to 57 per centby the ‘early’ treatments. The increase was dueto greater grain yields of the smaller shoots of each plantthere was no effect on the yields of the two largest shootsor on the total number of fertile shoots The increased grain yield of these smaller shoots was attributableto increased weights of their individual kernels, especiallyin the basal and distal parts of the ears such that a greateruniformity of kernel size within the ear was achieved Thus the cytokinin treatment increased uniformity both betweenshoots and between spikelets within the ears Hordeum vulgare L, spring barley, cytokinin, 6-benzylaminopunne, shoot dominance, harvest index, grain yield  相似文献

Summary To determine effects of level and time of application of urea on grain yields, components of grain yield, and nitrogen use efficiency by irrigated direct seeded rice (Oryza sativa L. var. IR 298-12-1-1-1), three field experiments were conducted at the Gezira Agricultural Research Station during the period 1976–78. The treatments included the factorial combination of three levels of nitrogen as urea (0,75 and 150 kg N/ha) two or three splits, and three times of topdressing of urea (early season application, 10 days after rice emergence, DRE; maximum tillering stage, 40 DRE; and panicle initiation stage, 75 DRE).Without application of nitrogen, grain yields averaged 1.5 t/ha. The yields averaged for rate and time of split significantly increased with increase in nitrogen applied to 3.9 and 5.0 t/ha, but nitrogen use efficiency (kg rice/kg N) decreased from 31 to 23 with the application of 75 and 150 kg N/ha respectively. As compared to other treatments of time of urea application, topdressing of urea at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages significantly improved nitrogen use efficiency by promoting production of more panicles per unit land area, and increasing grain weight. Three splits were no better than the two splits given at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages.  相似文献
