A preliminary survey of compounds that induce haustoria in thehemiparasite Orthocarpus purpurascens suggests that cellulosefibre is one source of the active, water soluble factor(s).Haustoria are induced by extracts of soya bean seeds, flax seeds,plant roots, cotton string, cotton, paper towel, tissue paperand yeast extract. Sugars, hormones, nitrogenous compounds,microbial exudates, and citric and ascorbic acid do not inducehaustoria. Citric acid has a positive synergistic affect inthe presence of an inducing factor. Terramycin applied to seedlings 3 days of age had a detrimentaleffect on root development, while penicillin did not. Penicillinreduced the numbers of haustoria formed between 19 and 25 daysof age. The combined use of penicillin and inducing factorsmay provide an excellent experimental system for determiningthe temporal and developmental pattern of haustoria formation. haustoria, chemical induction and repression, Orthocarpus purpurascens, hemiparasite  相似文献

Three lines of evidence correlate the parasitic performane ofOrthocarpus purpuruscens Benth. with numbers of haustoria produced:(i) the pattern of variation in numbers of haustoria producedin agar culture with different chemical stimuli correspondsclosely to the variation pattern of parasite vigour producedby a range of host plants; (ii) the progeny of plants demonstratingvigorous growth with hosts produce significantly more haustoriathan progeny from parents exhibiting weak parasitic development;(iii) conversely, seedlings that produce high numbers of haustoriain agar culture grow significantly better when transplantedwith hosts than do seedlings with low numbers of haustoria.Haustoria-forming potential is heritable, but highly influencedby environmental factors. Potential number of haustoria is aproduct of the concentration and/or quality of haustoria inducingstimuli, and the parasite's individual ability to respond. A chromosome number ofn=12 is reported for the three monotypic genera of subtribe Castillejinae:Clevelandia beldingii, Gentrya racemosa, andOpicopephalus angustifolius. Chromosome numbers ofOrthocarpus correspond mostly with current infrageneric classification. SubgenusTriphysaria hasn=11.Orthocarpus sectionsCastillejoides andCordylanthoides, which are closely related toCastilleja (x=12) and the three monotypic genera above, haven=12 with aneuploid reductions ton=10 inO. linearilobus andn=11 inO. lacerus (a species also withn=12). Tetraploids are found in two species.O. brevistylus (n=24) andO. hispidus (n=12, 24). The polyploid.O. laciniatus (n=36, 48) of Peru is postulated to be of hybrid origin between a species ofCastilleja andOrthocarpus attenuatus. SubgenusOrthocarpus sectionOrthocarpus, which hasn=14 in all species except.O. bracteosus (n=15), stands apart both morphologically and in chromosome number from the remainder of the genus.  相似文献

The genus Cycniopsis is reexamined. Generic and specific delimitation is discussed with respect to morphological characters, including seed structures studied by scanning electron microscopy. A hierarchical key to Cycniopsis and related genera is presented.
Two species are recognised, C. humifusa and C. humilis comb. nov. Several names are reduced to synonymy, and three lectotypes and one neotype are selected. Both species are illustrated, and a distribution map is provided.  相似文献

Mazus japonicus is predominantly self-pollinated,M. miquelii mostly cross-pollinated, with a low degree of self-incompatibility. Correlated differences effect structure, development and seismonasty of the stigma, spatial relationships of stigma and anthers, and pollinator visits.M. japonicus produces numerous and light,M. miquelii fewer and heavier seeds. Growth experiments under different temperature regimes demonstrate thatM. japonicus dies after flowering and fruiting, and behaves as an annual, whileM. miquelii has additional asexual propagation and is clearly perennial.M. japonicus grows in somewhat drier and more disturbed habitats thanM. miquelii.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers for six Australian taxa ofEuphrasia have been determined. Improved staining techniques have shown that numbers for four of the taxa published previously by the first author were incorrect. Meiotic and mitotic counts for all major taxa withinChelone show a euploid series: 2n = 28, 56, 84. A base number ofx = 14 is suggested. The distribution of numbers supports some previous taxonomic decisions. It raises questions about others, particularly those involving theC. glabra-C. obliqua complex. InMazus pumilus, all the floral appendages are initiated in acropetal sequence in the second cell layer (except stamens) of the floral primordium by periclinal divisions. The actinomorphic calyx tube is formed due to zonal growth. The zygomorphy in corolla is evident from the inception of petal primordia which arise sequentially as independent units in order of one anterior, a pair of anterio-lateral followed by a pair of posterio-lateral. Later these primordia exhibit differential growth because of which zygomorphy becomes more pronounced. The upper corolla tube is formed by interprimordial growth and lower corolla tube by zonal growth. Stamens are initiated in the third layer of the floral apex. Unlike sepals and petals, in the development of stamens (4) underlying cells of corpus also contribute. Posterior stamen is absent. The stamens become epipetalous because of interprimordial and zonal growth in the common region below the bases of petals as well as stamens. The two carpel primordia arise as crescent shaped structures which become continuous due to interprimordial growth. The ovary is formed by a ring of zonal meristem. The style develops later between stigma and ovary because of intercalary growth. The residual apex grows vertically along with the ovary and forms the septum of the ovary. All the floral appendages exhibit similar pattern of histogenesis and early growth suggesting thereby the appendicular nature of these appendages.  相似文献

Distribution maps and notes are given for the 41 species of Parahebe sensu lata. The genus occurs in New Zealand, south-east Australia and New Guinea, with greatest diversity in New Zealand, especially in the Spenser Mountains region of South Island. A group of species with ciliate floral discs is found in north-east South Island, and also in eastern Papua New Guinea. This outer Australasian arc distribution is attributed to the group having originated before the break-up of Gondwana. Within New Zealand the P. catarraclae complex shows disjunction along the Alpine Fault, a plate boundary of the transform type. The disjunction is attributed to massive lateral displacement on the Fault during Tertiary time pulling apart plant populations. Parahebe sect. Paniculatae is newly described. The following new combinations are made: Parahebe brevistylis, P. macrantha, P. macrantha var. brachyphylla, P. raoulii, P. r. subsp. maccaskillii, P. r. subsp. pentasepala, P. lavaudiana, P. hulkeana, P. nivea, P. arenaria, P. velutina, P. blakelyi, P. arcuata, P. derwentiana subsp. maideniana, P. d. subsp. homalodonta, P. d. subsp. anisodonta and P. d. subsp. subglauca.  相似文献

Floral evolution in the tribeVeroniceae was examined using phylogenetic analysis combining 24 adult morphology and chromosome number characters with 22 qualitative and quantitative floral development characters. Taxa sampled included nine species ofVeroniceae and as an outgroup one species each ofDigitaleae andVerbasceae. Veronica, Besseya, andSynthyris formed one clade, subtended byPseudolysimachion and then by theHebe group;Veronicastrum orWulfenia represent the basal-most branch of the tribe. The ancestral flowers of theVeroniceae may have been small with moderately short corolla tubes and lobes; long corolla tubes arose four times in the tribe and large corolla lobes twice.  相似文献

Abstract Melampyrum ciliare has tubular flowers predominantly visited by Bombus diversus. Floral structure (including the positions of anthers and stigma) and structure of the distal part of the corolla indicate cross-pollination by bumblebees. In M. ciliare, young flowers with white spots on the labium, which disappeared with flower aging, produced larger amounts of nectar than older ones without spots. Bumblebees visited flowers with white spots significantly more frequently than would be expected if they chose flowers randomly. These findings and the high seed production of open-pollinated flowers suggest effective pollination of M. ciliare by bumblebees.  相似文献

To search for new bioactive constituents from Pedicularis tricolor, a new xanthone named pedicutricone A (1)and a new iridoid named pedicutricoside A (2), along with fifteen known compounds, were isolated from the ethanol extracts of the whole plants of P. tricolor for the first time. A taxonomic revision ofCordylanthus subg.Hemistegia based on evidence from morphology, chromosome numbers, habitat, ecology, and geographic distribution is presented, recognizing four species and five subspecies. Three new combinations on the subspecific level are proposed. The first chromosome counts for subg.Hemistegia are reported with haploid numbers ofn = 14, 15, and 21. Each species is illustrated with line drawings showing habit and floral morphology; distribution maps indicate sites of known populations. The possible extinction ofC. mollis ssp.mollis andC. pamatus is discussed, and the urgent need for preservation of their saline and alkaline habitats is emphasized.  相似文献

All the floral primordia are homologous to leaves in their development inLindenbergia macrostachya. The sepals follow an anterior to posterior sequence of initiation. The petals and stamens are initiated almost simultaneously but sequentially in order of petals followed by stamens. There is no sign of development of fifth posterior stamen. p ]The calyx tube is formed by interprimordial growth followed by zonal growth. The combined interprimordial growth between the petal primordia and growth on the abaxial side of stamen primordia results in the formation of upper corolla tube whereas lower corolla tube is formed only by zonal growth. The zonal growth extends below the bases of stamen primordia also due to which they become epipetalous. The placentae arise from the carpellary margins, move inwards and get fused in the lower half and remain free in the upper part of the ovary. Thus the ovary appears biloeular with axile plaeentation in the lower haler and unilocular with parietal placentation in the upper half.  相似文献
