Cold-water coral (CWC) reefs constitute one of the most complex deep-sea habitats harboring a vast diversity of associated species. Like other tropical or temperate framework builders, these systems are facing an uncertain future due to several threats, such as global warming and ocean acidification. In the case of Mediterranean CWC communities, the effect may be exacerbated due to the greater capacity of these waters to absorb atmospheric CO2 compared to the global ocean. Calcification in these organisms is an energy-demanding process, and it is expected that energy requirements will be greater as seawater pH and the availability of carbonate ions decrease. Therefore, studies assessing the effect of a pH decrease in skeletal growth, and metabolic balance are critical to fully understand the potential responses of these organisms under a changing scenario. In this context, the present work aims to investigate the medium- to long-term effect of a low pH scenario on calcification and the biochemical composition of two CWCs from the Mediterranean, Dendrophyllia cornigera and Desmophyllum dianthus. After 314 d of exposure to acidified conditions, a significant decrease of 70 % was observed in Desmophyllum dianthus skeletal growth rate, while Dendrophyllia cornigera showed no differences between treatments. Instead, only subtle differences between treatments were observed in the organic matter amount, lipid content, skeletal microdensity, or porosity in both species, although due to the high variability of the results, these differences were not statistically significant. Our results also confirmed a heterogeneous effect of low pH on the skeletal growth rate of the organisms depending on their initial weight, suggesting that those specimens with high calcification rates may be the most susceptible to the negative effects of acidification.  相似文献

Synopsis Variation in the diurnal composition of a fish assemblage of a Bahamian coral reef was investigated by comparing visual counts of fishes taken along a 100 × 4 m wide fixed transect at four times: 0900, 1200, 1500 and 1800 hours during the summer of 1979. One sample per day was obtained at each time period over a span of 20 consecutive days. Forty-two species were recorded in these samples, with 25 occurring frequently enough to permit statistical analysis of diurnal variations in abundance. Of the 25 species compared, nearly one fourth (6 species) displayed significant variation in abundance patterns among the four time periods tested. It is suggested, because of the strong possibility of bias which might otherwise be introduced because of these variations, that repetitive quantitative visual censusing of coral reef fishes be undertaken at about the same time each day.  相似文献

Frequent occurrences of coral bleaching and the ensuing damage to coral reefs have generated interest in documenting stress responses that precede bleaching. The objective of this study was to assess and compare physiological changes in healthy, semi-bleached and totally bleached colonies of two coral species, Porites lutea and Acropora formosa, during a natural bleaching event in the Lakshadweep Archipelago in the Arabian Sea to determine the traits that will be useful in the diagnosis of coral health. In April 2002, three “health conditions” were observed as “appearing healthy,” “semi-bleached” and “bleached” specimens for two dominant and co-occurring coral species in these islands. Changes in the pigment composition, zooxanthellae density (ZD), mitotic index (MI) of zooxanthellae, RNA/DNA ratios and protein profile in the two coral species showing different levels of bleaching in the field were compared to address the hypothesis of no difference in health condition between species and bleaching status. The loss in chlorophyll (chl) a, chl c and ZD in the transitional stage of semi-bleaching in the branched coral A. formosa was 80, 75 and 80%, respectively. The losses were much less in the massive coral P. lutea, being 20, 50 and 25%, respectively. The decrease in zooxanthellar density and chl a was accompanied by an increased MI of zooxanthellae and RNA/DNA ratios in both the species. There was an increase in accumulation of lipofuscin granules in partially bleached P. lutea tissue, which is an indication of cellular senescence. Multivariate statistical analyses showed that colonies of P. lutea ranked in different health conditions differed significantly in chl a, chl c, ZD, RNA/DNA ratios, and protein concentrations, whereas in A. formosa chl a, chl c, chl a/c, phaeopigments and MI contributed to the variance between health conditions.  相似文献

Large-scale coral bleaching was first observed in 1979 and has occurred throughout virtually all of the tropics since that time. Severe bleaching may result in the loss of live coral and in a decline of the integrity of the impacted coral reef ecosystem. Despite the extensive scientific research and increased public awareness of coral bleaching, uncertainties remain about the past and future of large-scale coral bleaching. In order to reduce these uncertainties and place large-scale coral bleaching in the longer-term climatological context, specific criteria and methods for using historical sea surface temperature (SST) data to examine coral bleaching-related thermal conditions are proposed by analyzing three, 132 year SST reconstructions: ERSST, HadISST1, and GISST2.3b. These methodologies are applied to case studies at Discovery Bay, Jamaica (77.27°W, 18.45°N), Sombrero Reef, Florida, USA (81.11°W, 24.63°N), Academy Bay, Galápagos, Ecuador (90.31°W, 0.74°S), Pearl and Hermes Reef, Northwest Hawaiian Islands, USA (175.83°W, 27.83°N), Midway Island, Northwest Hawaiian Islands, USA (177.37°W, 28.25°N), Davies Reef, Australia (147.68°E, 18.83°S), and North Male Atoll, Maldives (73.35°E, 4.70°N). The results of this study show that (1) The historical SST data provide a useful long-term record of thermal conditions in reef ecosystems, giving important insight into the thermal history of coral reefs and (2) While coral bleaching and anomalously warm SSTs have occurred over much of the world in recent decades, case studies in the Caribbean, Northwest Hawaiian Islands, and parts of other regions such as the Great Barrier Reef exhibited SST conditions and cumulative thermal stress prior to 1979 that were comparable to those conditions observed during the strong, frequent coral bleaching events since 1979. This climatological context and knowledge of past environmental conditions in reef ecosystems may foster a better understanding of how coral reefs will respond in future, ocean warming scenarios.  相似文献

In 1998, the Indian Ocean coral reefs suffered a severe and extensive mass bleaching event. The thermal tolerances of corals were exceeded and their photosynthetic symbionts (zooxanthellae) lost. Mortalities of up to 90% were recorded on the reefs of Seychelles, Maldives, Kenya and Tanzania. South African coral reefs were among the few that largely escaped the 1998 mass bleaching event, but may be threatened in the future if global warming increases. This study assessed the extent of coral bleaching and partial recovery at Sodwana Bay, South Africa during 2000 and 2001. Bleaching levels in this study varied over the course of a year, which suggested that seasonally varying parameters such as sea temperature were the most likely cause of bleaching. Bleaching levels were highest at the shallowest site. However, these bleaching levels were very low in comparison with those of reefs elsewhere in the Indian Ocean. The greater volume of water over the relatively deeper reefs of Sodwana Bay may have protected the reefs from severe bleaching. Field measurements on the three reefs indicated that, although the reefs at Sodwana Bay are still healthy, bleaching increased from <1% in 1998 to 5–10% in 2002. Bleaching occurred in 26 coral genera. The Alcyonacea were highly susceptible to bleaching, especially Sarcophyton sp. Among the hard corals, Montipora spp. were the species most susceptible to bleaching. The sensitivity of these genera to early and slight increases in temperature suggests that they can forewarn of a possible greater bleaching event. In contrast, the coral genera Turbinaria and Stylophora were most resistant to bleaching.  相似文献

Coral bleaching is an increasingly prominent threat to coral reef ecosystems, not only to corals, but also to the many organisms that rely on coral for food and shelter. Coral-feeding fishes are negatively affected by coral loss caused by extensive bleaching, but it is unknown how feeding behaviour of most corallivorous fishes changes in response to coral bleaching. In this study, coral bleaching was experimentally induced in situ to examine the feeding response of two obligate corallivorous fish, Labrichthys unilineatus (Labridae) and Chaetodon baronessa (Chaetodontidae). Feeding rates were monitored before, during, and immediately after experimental bleaching of prey corals. L. unilineatus significantly increased its feeding on impacted corals during bleaching, but showed a steady decline in feeding once corals were fully bleached. Feeding response of L. unilineatus appears to parallel the expected stress-induced mucous production by bleaching colonies. In contrast, C. baronessa preferentially fed from healthy colonies over bleached colonies, although bleached colonies were consumed for five days following manipulation. Feeding by corallivorous fishes can play an important role in determining coral condition and mortality of corals following stress induced bleaching.  相似文献

The potential effects of food and shelter availability on the recruitment and early survivorship of coral reef fishes were studied on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The faunal assemblage studied included diurnally active fishes found in the “rubble/sand” habitat. The most abundant members were: beaugregory, Stegastes leucostictus (Muller & Troschel), goldspotted goby, Gnatholepis thompsoni Jordan, bridled goby, Coryphopterus glaucofraenum Gill, surgeonfishes, Acanthurus bahianus Castelnau and A. chirurgus (Bloch), and French grunt, Haemulon flavolineatum (Desmarest). Comparisons of recruitment to reefs constructed from substrata that varied in morphological characteristics showed that there were differences in the relative abundances of recruits attracted to and/or surviving on the different reef types. Juveniles of most species appeared to prefer the branching coral Porites porites (Pallas), which provided a large number of small crevices between the branches.Manipulations of the availability of shelter sites for fishes demonstrated that recruitment and/or early survivorship were strongly limited by the number of refuges. This result was found in six separate carried out during different years and in different seasons. Shelter site availability presumably limits fish populations through its effects on prédation rates.Experimental manipulations of food availability indicated that food does not directly influence settlement or early survivorship of coral reef fishes. However, it is probable that correlations between habitat characteristics and food availability have influenced the evolution of settling preferences.  相似文献

The Eocene fishes of Monte Bolca: the earliest coral reef fish assemblage   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The fish assemblage from the Eocene deposits of Monte Bolca, Northern Italy, are compared with those of Recent coral reefs. A family-level taxonomic definition of a Recent coral reef fish assemblage is formulated to permit direct comparisons. On this basis, the Monte Bolca fishes represent the earliest clearly defined coral reef fish assemblage. Quantitative analyses of the relative abundance of fish families revealed significant differences between the two assemblages. The Bolca assemblage has Mesozoic links (Pycnodontiformes) and non-perciform taxa are relatively abundant, particularly the Beryciformes (Holocentridae). However, Bolca represents the earliest record of a perciform-dominated benthic fish assemblage (68.4% of all non-clupeid taxa). Within the Perciformes, the abundance of the major reef fish lineages (higher squamipinnes and Labroidei) differs markedly between the two assemblages. The numerical dominance of labroid fishes on coral reefs appears to have been a relatively recent occurrence.  相似文献

Representing species in reserves from patterns of assemblage diversity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Aim A positive relationship between assemblage diversity (AD) – equivalent to the biotic version of the environment diversity, ED, method – and species diversity has been reported. This being true, reserve networks with many different assemblages would be expected to represent more species than reserve networks including fewer and less different assemblages. This idea was tested using European species atlas distributions of terrestrial vertebrates and plants. It is asked whether: (1) maximizing AD within one group would represent species diversity of this group better than expected by chance; and (2) maximizing AD within one group would represent species diversity of other groups better than expected by chance. Location Europe. Methods Three ordination techniques (non‐metric multidimensional scaling, detrended correspondence analysis and correspondence analysis) are used to summarize patterns of compositional turnover within assemblages. p‐Median location‐allocation models are then calculated from ordination space to measure the degree of expected species representation within the group being sampled as well as the expected representation within other groups. Results are compared with near‐optimal solutions obtained with complementarity‐based algorithms and to a null model obtained by simulating selection of areas at random. Matrix correlation analysis was also performed to investigate broad patterns of covariation in compositional turnover of assemblages of species belonging to different taxonomic groups and these values were compared with correlation in species richness scores between groups. Results The AD model did not always represent more species of the group being sampled than expected by chance (P < 0.05). Results were independent of the method and taxonomic group considered. Effectiveness of AD within one group to represent species of other groups varied, but in most cases it was worse than using complementarity‐based algorithms as a surrogate strategy. Even when correlations indicated high coincidence between assemblages, taxonomic‐based surrogates did not always recover more species than expected by chance (P < 0.05). Main conclusions Results are discussed in the light of two possible explanations: (1) the AD model is based on unrealistic assumptions, namely that species have equal probability of having the centre of their distributions anywhere in ordination space and that species display unimodal, symmetrical, bell‐shaped response curves to gradients; (2) particular implementation of methods may be inadequate to summarize useful complementarity among assemblages, especially for restricted‐range species. We conclude that both arguments are likely to play a role in explaining results, but that opportunities exist to improve performance of existing surrogate strategies.  相似文献

The pre-competency period of coral larvae influences dispersal, and this may be affected under projected climate change conditions. In this laboratory study, we examined the influence of sea water temperature on the duration of pre-competency of larvae of four broadcast spawning coral species. Fungia repanda, Acropora millepora, A. spathulata and Symphyllia recta larvae demonstrated large differences in cohort competency levels when cultured over a 4°C range during the first 4 days post fertilisation. Warmer temperatures reduced pre-competency periods by at least a day for all species, but there were also indications of an upper temperature threshold of less than 32°C for the development of F. repanda, A. millepora and S. recta. These data suggest a general flexibility in ontogenic response to ambient water temperatures. Sea surface temperatures (SST) that differ at spawning time by as little as 2°C, due to inter-annual or latitudinal variation, are likely to alter coral larval dispersal ranges. In some locations, notably the central Indo-Pacific, where major coral spawning activity can coincide with seasonal SST maxima, a future 2°C increase due to climate change may have serious negative effects on coral development and distribution.  相似文献

Abstract . This paper assesses variation in coral species diversity within the Indonesian archipelago, and the influence of regional species pools, geomorphology and anthropogenic pollution on coral species diversity and occurrence. We obtained transects from 33 sites on 14 reefs in three regions of Indonesia: Ambon (Moluccas), South Sulawesi and the Java Sea. We determined the within‐site species richness by using species‐sampling curves. Cluster analysis and multi‐dimensional scaling showed that land‐based pollution was the primary determinant of coral species diversity and species occurrence on reefs. Relatively unaffected reference sites in eastern Indonesia were approximately 20% more diverse than Java Sea reference sites. Rare species formed a higher proportion of the coral fauna on eastern Indonesian sites, and eastern Indonesian apparent endemic species contributed approximately 25% of the total species pool sampled. Between‐site variation in species occurrence was lower on Java Sea reefs than on eastern Indonesian reefs. A larger species pool in eastern Indonesia than in the Java Sea probably accounted for most of the difference in within‐site species diversity between eastern Indonesian and Java Sea reference sites. High fishing intensity in the Java Sea, including destructive fishing practices, may have also contributed to reduced within‐site species diversity on Java Sea reference reefs. Despite the fact that the Java Sea was exposed during Pleistocene lowstands, and was recolonized by marine organisms only within the last 10 000 years, coral species diversity and assemblage composition on the Java Sea reefs was largely similar to open ocean reefs in eastern Indonesia.  相似文献

Human activity is changing environmental conditions on a global scale. Among the ecosystems that are affected by human activities, coral reefs are among the most prominent. In Brazil, the coral reefs of the Corumbau Marine Extractive Reserve (CMER) and Abrolhos National Marine Park (ANMP) in Bahia state have some of the highest coral cover in the South Atlantic Ocean. Hard coral cover, algal cover, and foraminiferal population distribution patterns were used to assess the coral reef benthic environments, and define a background that can be used in worldwide comparisons in future studies. To compare these two monitoring approaches in different coral reef environments, relative frequency data for occurrence of hard coral and algal cover, using point-intercept transects as proposed by the Reef Check protocol, and foraminiferal samples were collected from Corumbau (nearshore) and Abrolhos (offshore) in April 2005. The foraminiferal assemblage was evaluated using the FORAM index (FI — Foraminifera in Reef Assessment and Monitoring), which provides a numeric diagnosis of suitability of benthic habitat to support calcifying organisms that host algal symbionts, originally developed for Caribbean reef areas. Coral cover in the surveyed areas, both in Corumbau and in Abrolhos, ranged from 13% to 37%, while high foraminiferal diversities (H') were found in all stations. Dominance of symbiont-bearing taxa of Amphistegina lessonii and Archaias angulatus only occurred at two shallow stations, Mato Verde and Siriba, both in Abrolhos, where FI > 4.00. Stations located in Corumbau and Abrolhos had FI values < 4.00. Q-mode cluster analysis showed that foraminifers have specific preferences for physical conditions, especially hydrodynamics and light availability, which influence the FI index. Although coral cover in these areas can be considered good by regional standards, foraminifer analysis showed that the benthic system was unfavorable for symbiont-bearing foraminiferal species at most stations. This discrepancy reveals that the FI must be used with caution in areas other than the northwestern Atlantic and Caribbean where it was developed, and that some coral species can thrive in muddier conditions than can most symbiont-bearing foraminifers.  相似文献

The spring and summer of 2010/11 saw an exceptionally strong La Niña push warm waters from Indonesia down the Western Australian coastline, resulting in a host of extraordinary biological oddities including significant bleaching of Western Australian corals. Here, we report a 79–92 % decline in coral cover for a location in the Ningaloo Marine Park where sustained high water temperatures over an 8-month period left just 1–6 % of corals alive. The severity of bleaching provided an opportunity to investigate the resilience of different taxonomic groups and colony size classes to an acute but protracted episode of thermal stress. While the sub-dominant community of massive growth forms fared reasonably well, the dominant Acropora and Montipora assemblages all died, with the exception of the <10 cm size class, which seemed immune to bleaching.  相似文献

We quantify the relative importance of multi‐scale drivers of reef fish assemblage structure on isolated coral reefs at the intersection of the Indian and Indo‐Pacific biogeographical provinces. Large (>30 cm), functionally‐important and commonly targeted species of fish, were surveyed on the outer reef crest/front at 38 coral reef sites spread across three oceanic coral reef systems (i.e. Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Rowley Shoals), in the tropical Indian Ocean (c. 1.126 x 106 km2). The effects of coral cover, exposure, fishing pressure, lagoon size and geographical context, on observed patterns of fish assemblage structure were modelled using Multivariate Regression Trees. Reef fish assemblages were clearly separated in space with geographical location explaining ~53 % of the observed variation. Lagoon size, within each isolated reef system was an equally effective proxy for explaining fish assemblage structure. Among local‐scale variables, ‘distance from port’, a proxy for the influence of fishing, explained 5.2% of total variation and separated the four most isolated reefs from Cocos (Keeling) Island, from reefs with closer boating access. Other factors were not significant. Major divisions in assemblage structure were driven by sister taxa that displayed little geographical overlap between reef systems and low abundances of several species on Christmas Island corresponding to small lagoon habitats. Exclusion of geographical context from the analysis resulted in local processes explaining 47.3% of the variation, highlighting the importance of controlling for spatial correlation to understand the drivers of fish assemblage structure. Our results suggest reef fish assemblage structure on remote coral reef systems in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean reflects a biogeographical legacy of isolation between Indian and Pacific fish faunas and geomorphological variation within the region, more than local fishing pressure or reef condition. Our findings re‐emphasise the importance that historical processes play in structuring contemporary biotic communities.  相似文献

Temperate organisms are generally exposed to a more variable and cooler climate than tropical organisms, and are therefore expected to have broader thermal tolerance and a different thermal performance curve. This study investigated these hypotheses by comparing the thermal performance of two common tropical coral species found in the Great Barrier Reef with the two most common temperate coral species from the Mediterranean Sea. Photosynthesis rates, dark respiration rates, maximum PSII quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and electron transport rates (rETRm) were measured on coral fragments exposed to an acute temperature increase and decrease up to 5 °C above and below the average environmental seawater temperature. Dark respiration rates and Fv/Fm increased linearly with temperature, suggesting broad thermal tolerance. For photosynthesis and rETRm, the performance breadths were surprisingly similar between the tropical and temperate species. However, the thermal optimum for performance was generally below the local average temperature, and only coincided with the prevailing environmental temperature for one of the tropical species. The broad thermal tolerance for photosynthesis displayed in this study supports previous observations that corals can survive short periods of abnormally warm temperatures and suggests that corals adopt thermal generalist strategies to cope with temperature variation in the environment. Nevertheless, current mean temperatures are 10–30% above the thermal optimum for the species studied here, demonstrating that conditions are already pushing the boundaries of coral thermal tolerance.

The global degradation of coral reefs is having profound effects on the structure and species richness of associated reef fish assemblages. Historically, variation in the composition of fish communities has largely been attributed to factors affecting settlement of reef fish larvae. However, the mechanisms that determine how fish settlers respond to different stages of coral stress and the extent of coral loss on fish settlement are poorly understood. Here, we examined the effects of habitat degradation on fish settlement using a two-stage experimental approach. First, we employed laboratory choice experiments to test how settlers responded to early and terminal stages of coral degradation. We then quantified the settlement response of the whole reef fish assemblage in a field perturbation experiment. The laboratory choice experiments tested how juveniles from nine common Indo-Pacific fishes chose among live colonies, partially degraded colonies, and dead colonies with recent algal growth. Many species did not distinguish between live and partially degraded colonies, suggesting settlement patterns are resilient to the early stages of declining coral health. Several species preferred live or degraded corals, and none preferred to associate with dead, algal-covered colonies. In the field experiment, fish recruitment to coral colonies was monitored before and after the introduction of a coral predator (the crown-of-thorns starfish) and compared with undisturbed control colonies. Starfish reduced live coral cover by 95–100%, causing persistent negative effects on the recruitment of coral-associated fishes. Rapid reductions in new recruit abundance, greater numbers of unoccupied colonies and a shift in the recruit community structure from one dominated by coral-associated fishes before degradation to one predominantly composed of algal-associated fish species were observed. Our results suggest that while resistant to coral stress, coral death alters the process of replenishment of coral reef fish communities.  相似文献

A method of computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA) is used to determine the parameters of sperm motility in three fish species from the coral reefs of the Nha Trang Bay, South China Sea, Vietnam: Zebrasoma scopas (Acanthuridae), Abudefduf sexfasciatus, and Dascyllus trimaculatus (Pomacentridae). The representatives of the families are characterized by different reproductive tactics and possess pelagic and demersal eggs, respectively. The main morphological parameters of spermatozoa have been measured. The average curvilinear velocity of spermatozoa movement along the real trajectory (VCL) after 1 min of sperm activation ranges from 15.3 to 74.5 μm/s in Z. scopas, it is comparatively low (12.7–21.6 μm/s) in A. sexfasciatus, and high (58.4–92.2 μm/s) in D. trimaculatus. The duration of progressive movements in more than 50% of spermatozoa at 25°C is 3–20, 5–11, and 6–9 min after sperm activation, respectively. Following storage of the sperm of three species at 4.5°C for 7, 20, and 28 h, respectively, spermatozoa retain the ability of progressive movements. The results are discussed based on the available information on the activity of sperm in fish.  相似文献
